UNECA gets 2015 Sonora Plate Green Leaf Award

Pen Printing Press upgrades to Ricoh 7100X

The award recognizes printing companies committed to excellence in environmental practices

Giffin Graphics supplied the new machine to replace the Ricoh 751

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) is the winner of the 2015 Sonora Plate Green Leaf Award in the Middle East and Africa region. The award, presented by Kodak, recognizes organizations that are leaders in their commitment to integrating green practices into their operations to achieve reductions in their environmental impact. The UNECA, which was founded in 1958 as one of the UN's five regional commissions, has a mandate to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development. The organization publishes and prints numerous reports, studies, and papers in support of this mission while also providing printing services to other UN Agencies based in Ethiopia and the African Union Commission. The UNECA, which is ISO-14001: 2004 certified, is being recognized as a user of Kodak Sonora Process Free Plates and for its focus on minimizing and reducing con-

sumption of power, water, and other consumables. By transitioning its pre-press operations from chemistry-based to process free computer-to-plate technology, the UNECA has eliminated all the processing steps associated with traditional plate making, reducing water and energy consumption, while minimizing waste and chemical pollution. In addition to their use of Sonora Plates, the UNECA is using 100% recycled paper both for office use and conference documents and aims to incorporate ecologically sustainable building design across its operations. As part of its mission, the UNECA is a vocal advocate for sustainability. It publishes books that support environmental initiatives including, the Special report on the ICGLR Regional Initiative against the Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources (RINR) and other Certification Mechanisms in the Great Lakes Region, The Renewable Energy Sector in North Africa and Achieving Sustainable Development in Africa through Inclusive Green Growth. "As part of the UNECA's mandate to promote the economic and social development of Africa, the organization advocates for the proper management of Africa's natural resources that play a large part in the continent's economic growth," said Rich Rindo, Kodak General Manager, WW Offset Print and Vice President Print Systems Division. By integrating green printing practices, the UNECA is leading by example and demonstrating to the

communities it serves that sustainability is good for business and the future of the continent." Charles Ndungu, Chief, Printing and Publishing unit of United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) remarked on the UNECA's commitment to sustainable printing: "The UNECA is on a journey to become a more responsible printer. We started here in Africa by publishing conference documents on recycled paper. Today, the UNECA publishes all of its Publications on chlorine-free paper. By moving our pre-press operations to process free platemaking, we continue our commitment to print responsibly, while reaping the benefits of increased productivity and the conservation of critical energy and water resources." The Sonora Plate Green Leaf Award is named after Kodak Sonora Process Free Plates which are designed for commercial, packaging and publishing printers, offering a commercially sound and environmentally improved solution for printing a wide range of applications. Launched in 2014, the Sonora Plate Green Leaf Award recognizes excellence among Kodak customers that are leaders in environmental initiatives. Award entrants are judged on a range of criteria, including management practices to improve energy and water efficiency, participation in local community sustainability initiatives and the use of eco-conscious materials and supplies. All submissions are reviewed with scores determined by a panel of Kodak judges.

Pen Printing Press in Ajman has installed a Ricoh 7100X digital cut sheet printing machine for its high quality and speedy delivery. The new machine which replaces the Ricoh 751 at the press has been acquired from the same supplier Giffin Graphics. Sunny Thomas, general manager, Pen Printing Press, points out that digital technology is inevitable for speedy delivery of short run jobs. “In this market it is always highly advisable to prepare a dummy and get the approval from clients before the final print. Naturally this will lead to less rejection with regard to color matching. Digital is best option for proofing,” says Sunny. Pen Printing is seeking new business opportunities with the

Ricoh 7100X. Sunny indicates that although the present market conditions are highly unpredictable, he hopes to recover the investment within 24 months. “This investment will enable us to venture into new areas such as low quantity business folders, business cards, gift boxes, PVC stickers, PU form printing, and poster printing. An additional attraction is the flexibility of using paper from 80 to 350 gsm including special papers. We hope to attract many clients through quick delivery of business cards. Also we need to develop the market of small printed gift boxes with PU forms and Rexin,” says Sunny. Jaison P. their careers and contribute to the growth of strong local media enterprises. Through this initiative with its partners, WAN-IFRA raises awareness and provides practical advice to news media on the business case for diversity in leadership, and how to create an environment that supports the progression of women to management positions. WIN is a four-year, multi-million Euro program conducted by WANIFRA in partnership with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The program addresses the gender imbalance in media, while mobilizing the industry to collectively create an environment that supports conditions for women in media, and their organizations, to succeed. The Women in News Gender and Media Freedom Strategy combines WAN-IFRA’s global experience in running advocacy and development initiatives in support of media freedom and democracy with the first-hand knowledge of the impact gender-based programmes can have on media and society.

Women from media companies in Jordan and Lebanon are particularly encouraged to apply. Xerox to split into two public companies The separation will create a $11 billion Document Technology company and $7 billion Business Process Outsourcing company by the end of 2016 to lead in their respective rapidly evolving markets and capitalize on the opportunities that now exist to expand margins and increase market share.” “I am confident that the extensive structural review we conducted over the last few months has produced the right path forward for our company. We will now position the companies for success and execute our plan to separate them in the shortest possible timeframe while continuing to focus on achieving our 2016 goals,” added Burns.

Ursula Burns Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Xerox

The Board of Xerox has announced the company will be separated into two independent publicly traded companies – a Document Technology company and a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Company – by the end of 2016. The Document Technology company will focus on document management and document outsourcing with approximately $11 billion in 2015 revenue. The Business Process Outsourcing company will help clients improve the flow of work by leveraging its expertise in managing transactionintensive processes and applying innovations to automate and simplify business processes. With approximately $7 billion in 2015 revenue – more than 90% of which is annuity based – the company is focused on attractive growth markets including transportation, healthcare, commercial and government services. The leadership and names of the two companies will be determined as the separation process progresses. According to Xerox, the separation of the two businesses will enhance their competitive positions and create significant value creation opportunities, including: (1) Enhanced

strategic and operational focus: each company will leverage its areas of strength and differentiation to address distinct market trends and opportunities; (2) Simplification of organizational structure and resources: each company will be able to adapt faster to clients’ changing needs, address specific market dynamics, target innovation and investments in select growth areas and accelerate decision making processes; (3) Distinct and clear financial profiles: the separation will enable each company to leverage its distinct growth profile and cash flow characteristics to optimize its capital structure and capital allocation strategy; and (4) Compelling equity investment cases: as standalone companies, both companies will offer distinct and compelling investment propositions with differentiated financial profiles, growth drivers and business prospects. “Xerox is taking further affirmative steps to drive shareholder value by announcing it will separate into two strong, independent, publicly traded companies,” said Ursula Burns, chairman and chief executive officer of Xerox. “These two companies will be well positioned

Strategic Transformation Xerox also announced a three year strategic transformation program targeting a cumulative $2.4 billion savings across all segments. The program is inclusive of ongoing activities and $600 million of incremental transformation initiatives. The company expects $700 million in annualized savings in 2016. “A core tenet of the strategic transformation we are embarking on today is changing and improving the way we operationalize our businesses. We have identified a plan to deliver cumulative reductions of $2.4 billion over the next three years as part of this process. I have instructed our teams to begin work immediately to deliver the efficiencies needed to achieve our goal,” Burns added. Xerox will begin the process to separate into the two companies while it finalizes the transaction structure. Xerox’s objective is to complete the separation by year-end, subject to customary conditions, receipt of regulatory approvals, tax considerations, securing any necessary financing and final approval of the Xerox Board. The transaction is intended to be tax-free to Xerox shareholders for federal income tax purposes. Until the separation is complete, Xerox will continue to operate as a single company and it will continue to be business as usual for our customers and employees.

Epson to triple inkjet printhead production

ME‌Printer February 2016

A new factory will be set up in Japan to produce PrecisionCore printheads

10

Seiko Epson Corporation will invest approximately $168 million (20 billion yen) in a new factory at its Hirooka Office in Shiojiri, Japan. The new factory, which is part of the company's strategic plans for its printing solutions (inkjet printer) business, will produce state-of-theart PrecisionCore printheads, the core devices in Epson's inkjet printers. Equipped with a research and development function, the factory will have 49,000 square meters of floor space. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2016, and operations are expected to start in the first half of the 2018 fiscal year. Epson will conduct R&D and drive advances in production engineering and other areas at the facility, which, in the future, will roughly triple Epson's current printhead production capacity. As both an R&D center and production center for core devices used

in the printing solutions business, the Hirooka Office works closely with Epson's production sites worldwide. It shares the advanced production technology and expertise it gains through the development and production of core devices with Epson's overseas production sites to help maximize manufacturing capabilities across the Epson Group. The investment in the new factory is part of Epson's plans to further reinforce its R&D and production platform through the 2020 fiscal year. Epson's printing solutions business leverages original Micro Piezo inkjet technology to provide products and services to customers in the consumer, office, commercial, and industrial markets. The new factory will handle the front-end manufacturing process for PrecisionCore printheads, the core devices in Epson's business inkjet printers,

high-capacity ink tank printers, and commercial and industrial printers. Epson's high-speed business inkjet printers produce sharp text and images at a fraction of the cost per print and energy consumption of laser printers. These quality and cost advantages are behind the steady annual growth in demand from the office market. Highcapacity ink tank printers meet the needs of emerging markets for low-cost prints with genuine Epson print quality. Epson is now rolling high-capacity ink tank printers out to advanced economies, including Europe, Japan and the United States. DIC Group to build new blending facility for liquid inks in Indonesia The new facility is scheduled to begin operating in May 2016

Artist’s conception of the completed facility

Japanese chemical company DIC Corporation has announced that its Jakarta-based wholly owned subsidiary PT.DIC Graphics will build a new blending facility for liquid inks for food and beverage packaging in Surabaya, Indonesia, to which it will shift operations from its existing plant, located on the outskirts of Surabaya, which has become too small as a consequence of increases in production volume. The new facility, investment in which is estimated at around JPY

600 million, is scheduled to begin operating in May 2016, will approximately double the company’s production capacity. As a key production base for printing inks, PT. DIC Graphics has a main production facility in Jakarta, which manufactures inks from raw materials, and its blending facility in Surabaya, which transforms these inks into commercial products. Located in the southwestern end of Indonesia’s second-largest city, the new facility in Ngoro Industrial Park will have a floor space around three times that of the company’s existing Surabaya facility. In recent years, a rising standard of living and other factors have driven up demand for packaging materials in Indonesia. According to DIC estimates, demand for liquid inks for packaging, approximately 80,000

tons in 2015, is likely to surpass 120,000 tons in 2024. The new facility and its main facility will give PT. DIC Graphics a twopronged production configuration that will position it to respond to the growth in demand and also ensure high levels of safety and productivity. Under its current medium-term management plan, DIC105, the DIC Group is working to reinforce the earnings foundation of its printing inks by shifting its focus from inks for publishing to those for packaging applications and by reinforcing its production configuration in Asia. The Group will continue promoting efforts to strengthen its capabilities in the area of printing inks for packaging with the aim of increasing its global market share to 30%, from 25% at present, by 2020.

Heidelberg boosts automation levels in computer-to-plate

Mimaki to launch TS500P-3200 super-wide format inkjet printer

New auto pallet loader for the Suprasetter ensures non-stop operation in prepress

The 3.2m wide roll-to-roll sublimation printer is aimed at home furnishing textiles and indoor soft signage

Heidelberger is increasing automation in prepress and providing solutions to keep work moving in computer-to-plate by introducing two new optional auto pallet loader (APL) systems for the Suprasetter 106 and 145/162/190CtP platesetters, enabling uninterrupted loading of up to 1,200 printing plates in 106 format, or 600 in large format. That makes the systems a flexible and high-performance automation solution for computer-to-plate operations. The solution is particularly relevant for industrial-scale media service providers that are pursuing end-to-end automation in their printing process. “Our customers demand maximum quality in ever tighter timeframes and at good prices,” says Ferdinand Berger jun., senior manager at Druckerei Berger in Horn, Austria, neatly summing up a key customer requirement. “We can only achieve that by implementing large-scale automation in our value added chain. Perfect printing starts with a perfect prepress stage. By investing in an auto pallet loader for our Suprasetter 106, we have been able to make availability in prepress even better and ramp up the productivity of the process as a whole, while also reducing production costs,” continues Berger. To achieve flexibility in changing up to three plate formats, print shops can run the 106-format Suprasetter in combination with the Auto/Dual Cassette Loader (ACL/DCL). When

using the APL, personnel no longer have to insert the printing plates by hand. Instead, the plates stay on the Euro-pallet on which they are delivered. Using a hand pallet truck, personnel can quickly and easily move the plates up to the APL – from either side. The APL for the Suprasetter 106, A106, and 106 UV models can be loaded with up to 1,200 printing plates in this way. When using the APL for the Suprasetter 145, 162, and 190 formats, the total number of plates is up to 600, depending on their thickness. The APL also reduces errors and unnecessary interruptions, as manual loading often results in repeated unintended production stops due to scratched plates. The APLs are also integrated into the Remote Service portfolio that Heidelberg offers, which ensures rapid data analysis and error correction through Heidelberg Service. “The auto pallet loader represents another step in the automation of industrial print production. Our

customers can thus boost flexibility and production reliability in prepress,” says Harald Weimer, member of the Management Board and responsible for sales and head of Heidelberg Services at Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. “The production process in prepress runs on an almost non-stop basis, with no need for manual intervention. That is another milestone on the way to achieving a smart print production,” says Weimer. The auto pallet loader can be retrofitted to all the aforementioned Suprasetter models manufactured during or after 2013, supports the maximum working speed of the relevant Suprasetter, and runs on a non-stop basis once loaded. When running, the APL 106 removes the slip sheets from the plates without leaving any marks and separates the individual plates using a sucker and blast air. On the APL for large formats, the printing plates are transported to the platesetter via a transfer table. As the coated sides of the plates in the large format are face-up, the auto pallet loader for the large format is fully encapsulated to stop daylight affecting the plates. Depending on requirements, the 106-format Suprasetter can be extended on a modular basis with the Auto/Dual Cassette Loader or auto pallet loader with additional automation components. Another option is automatic plate edging with the plates then being sorted or stored in a magazine system until they are needed in the pressroom.

Mimaki is to launch the super-wide format TS500P-3200 inkjet printer come February 2016. This 3.2-m wide roll-to-roll sublimation inkjet printer is a dedicated transfer paper printer for the textile industry and is aimed at a broad range of applications including home furnishing textiles and indoor soft signage. The super-wide format TS500P-3200 inkjet printer features a new type of printhead to deliver high-speed printing at 180 m2/h. There are 12 printheads arrayed in three staggered lines that eject ink droplets at high speed to maintain the appropriate ink droplet angle and ensure accurate drop placement with a high head gap. This ensures high-quality printing results on low-cost thin transfer papers.

In addition, the environmentally friendly output does not emit volatile organic compounds after printing and helps reduce CO2 emissions during transportation because it is lightweight and foldable. “On-demand inkjet printing systems are increasingly being used for clothing production instead of conventional analogue systems because of their ability to quickly provide high-mix, low-volume printing,” says Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA at Mimaki Europe. “It started with the fashion industry putting the benefits of on demand digital printing to good use for tailored and variable print quantities. We see the trend expanding now to interior decoration and home styl-

ing. Moreover, the change is not limited to the production method, but also to production location. Production sites get shifted from low-cost remote locations to urban areas closer to consumers. We believe this trend will extend to the production of extra-wide textiles for home furnishings from curtains to upholstery and bed linens.”

A flat printer to decorate all surfaces up to 300mm The Practika Mig 64 has an inkjet system which has been designed for applying nanocolor inks The Practika Mig 64 from MuchColours is a flat printer for digital prints able to decorate all surfaces up to a maximum thickness of 300 mm. The bed dimension is 1600 x 3000 mm. The Practika Mig 64 is targeted at digital printing for glass, aluminium, stainless steel, thermoforming plastics, leather, wood, and MDF coated wood. The machine has an inkjet system which has been designed for applying nanocolor inks. The microscopic molecules of the nanocolor inks are able to penetrate more easily difficult materials as glass, ceramics, wood, leather or metal and therefore achieve an impressing adhesion and printing quality. The grip on most materials is assured by the fact that nanocomponents of the colour fluid can penetrate and crosslink all the materials because of the components’

very small sizes. Moreover it is also possible to use pigmented or sublimation inks. The flatbed unit can be optionally equipped with a roll printing system in order to enlarge the application possibilities. In addition to the CMYK standard inks there are special colours available. The Practika can be adapted to many individual printing and material requirements by installing different additional equipment and a special drying device, mounted directly on the print head. Practika is the only digital printer in the world able to reproduce Fluorescent Red and Yellow colours on any type of support. Global brands such as Adidas, Timberland, Fendi, and Dolce and Gabbana use the Practika Mig 64 to print on leather goods such as shoes, bags, and belts. The Practika Mig 64 can be used directly in any manufacturing facility for

glass, wood, leather, and other materials. It presents a new opportunity for sign makers involved in or seeking opportunities to provide services to such industries through value addition for home and office decoration,” says Dario Rampinelli, sales manager, MuchColours.

Trends Market Research

The future of digital print for packaging

The latest exclusive market research from Smithers Pira has identified a series of major changes set to transform the use of digital printing across the packaging and labelling industry.

20

Inkjet will become the dominant digital technology

Today the majority of the market is accounted for by electrophotography presses printing with

liquid or powder toner. Toner printing can be very high quality and is widely used in label production in cut-sheet, but principally narrow web formats. The alternative process is inkjet. It is non-contact, using liquid inks ejected from precision heads onto the substrate that then dries using one of several mechanisms. It also offers several advantages for print service providers and converters in the packaging, which will help it displace electrophotography equipment.

First non-impact inkjet processes are more suited to printing larger formats on a wide range of substrates making it more suited to packaging, and it can be integrated into existing conversion lines more easily than toner systems. In terms of volume of packaging substrates printed, electrophotography is still ahead today, but the rapid increase in inkjet means that by 2018 it will account for the majority of digital’s use in packaging.

Digital’s use with other packaging formats will erode the dominance of label presses

Smithers assesses the relative market growth across six packaging formats – labels, corrugated, folding cartons, flexibles, rigid plastic and metal. Labels was the first sector to use digital printing. This is because most self-adhesive labels are printed in narrow web on lightweight substrates well suited to the process. Equipment suppliers, notably HP Indigo and Xeikon, recognised the opportunity early, and introduced technology dedicated to label production. In 2015, labels account for 80.5% of total global market value and 93.5% of the printed volume. Across the study period labels are forecast to remain the majority of the sector, but all other segments are growing more rapidly – with corrugated, cartons, and flexibles becoming significant markets before 2020. Equipment suppliers are developing new presses as they strive to establish an early footprint in these less developed segments. Several high-profile examples are set for their first installations in 2016, and other systems will debut at drupa 2016. In the former category it was announced in December that DS Smith will take delivery of the first PageWide Web Press T1100S made by HP in spring 2016. Specifically designed for high-volume corrugated print, this 2.8m-wide inkjet press is built in cooperation with KBA. It will offer a top speed of 183m per minute, equivalent to 30,600m2per minute. In the folding carton segment, Landa is planning to have its first Nanography presses in operation in 2016. These will look to increase the run length across which a digital press can compete cost effectively with existing analogue units.

As part of its comprehensive approach to this key future market, Smithers surveyed delegates to its Digital Print for Packaging 2015 [http://www.printfutures. com/europe/] conference in Berlin on 8-9 December. In all 33% of respondents identified flexible packaging as the substrate for which there is the greatest opportunity for digital print. This was followed by corrugated and folding cartons on 27% each; only 13% of respondents voted for the current market leader – labels.

Shortening run lengths will aid the switch to digital

Digital print is typically more expensive than proven analogue platforms. This increased cost needs to be set against a benefit; like improved consumer engagement as witnessed in Coca Cola’s trail-blazing “Share a Coke” campaigns. Significantly the economics and productivity of digital technology is continuing to improve, making it increasingly pricecompetitive against analogue printing processes for more than just short runs. Eliminating plates, many prepress processes, and simplifying press make-ready times means digital methods are much lower cost to set up than analogue alternatives. While the unit cost of print is then higher, overall digital jobs are lower cost for short runs. While dedicated high-volume digital systems will increase the run lengths at which digital can match analogue, changes in demand from print buyers towards shorter runs will also benefit adoption of the new generation of inkjet and toner machines. In 2015, average run lengths are falling, as brands introduce more varieties and pack sizes to increase market appeal. This trend will continue through the fiveyear Smithers study period, and accelerate as variations in more languages, colours, flavours, fat/ sugar/salt/gluten/allergen-free varieties are commissioned by brands.

This will receive a further boost from new legal requirements for printed viable data trackand-trace marks on individual packs for high value goods, like pharmaceuticals. In future it will be possible to enhance these with varnishes laid down to give innovative tactile and haptic finishes.

Digital print’s supply chain will start to diverge from a traditional model

Adoption of digital print will also have a direct effect on the business market in which print service providers operate. In future greater flexibility and more simple supply chains will mean packaging can be printed on digital machines more quickly. This will be aided by the increasing availability of web-to-pack portals that will reduce the administration and prepress costs of producing press-ready artwork – shaving the cost of digital labels and packaging. By 2020, this type of online ordering may become the preferred method, even for medium length runs. Online ordering and the declining cost of digital presses means a threat will develop for print service providers. It will become increasingly possible to fit and remotely control printers at the manufacturer’s own facilities, regional distribution centres, or even retail outlets – providing a more responsive business model, producing bespoke packaging for promotional purposes on site.

In its latest market report – The Future of Digital Print for Packaging to 2020 – Smithers Pira confirms growth will continue in this segment for both toner and, especially, inkjet systems. Competitive digital equipment print will continue to expand across several lucrative pack format segments, offering many advantages to converters, packaging buyers, and retailers eager to satisfy consumer demand. Smithers Pira’s exclusive data shows a total world market valued at $10.5 billion (€9.3 billion) in 2015, with the equivalent of 107 billion A4 prints produced on digital presses. Over the next five years the volume of packaging printed on digital equipment will more than double, generating a market forecast to be worth $19.8 billion in 2020. This highlights the fact that digital print for packaging is one of the most rapidly growing arenas of print. As this expansion happens, a number of key trends will be realised creating a landscape in 2020 that is significantly different to that in 2015. The analysis in The Future of Digital Print for Packaging to 2020 identifies these as:

Supporting the increasingly mobile workforce with ‘anytime, anywhere’ solutions

Another key factor driving for-

ward the digitisation agenda is the continued rise in workplace mobility, which was identified as an important trend in the IDC research. By 2018, the analyst firm has predicted that 75% of the Western European workforce will be mobile and require access to accurate information in order to maintain and increase the productivity. This follows an earlier 2014 study released by Atomik Research on behalf of OKI Europe, which pointed to an increase in the use of smart devices and flexible working among European SMBs. Here, the research showed that, as reliance on digital technology grows, the demand for printed documents is evolving, with nearly half of the businesses surveyed (45%) highlighting that they have staff with a requirement to print from a mobile device. In direct response to market demand for digitisation, the rise in employee mobility and the desire for streamlined document workflows, smart MFPs are rising up the agenda and increasingly

being viewed as an important workplace technology. Acting as ‘on ramps and off ramps to the cloud’, IDC makes the case that they are much more powerful and capable than the printing devices of the past. This extends the role of the smart MFP from printing and copying (or ‘dumb device’) to a customisable digital transformation tool, paving the way for offices that are less cluttered with filing cabinets and making organisations much better equipped to move towards more productive workflows and increased document digitisation. “As a workplace technology, smart MFPs have come a long way in a very short space of time,” Terry Kawashima, managing director, OKI Europe Ltd. “This is in direct response to market demand for digitisation and streamlined document workflow set out in this latest IDC whitepaper, paving the way for a future of fewer filing cabinets and increased document digitisation.”

falling behind the competition and missing out on the potential to make important time and productivity savings as well as leaving them open to ever growing security concerns. In facilitating the transition away from paper-based processes, smart multifunction printers (MFPs) will have an important role in helping firms towards collaborative, digitised processes that are key to more efficient working practice. Here, one of the key benefits of business process automation is in providing the ability to archive documents in one place. By providing access to scanning

The worldwide production print market continues to show yearover-year growth in unit shipments, gaining 9.9% in the third quarter of 2015 (3Q15). According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Production Printer Tracker, unit shipments increased to approximately 10,500 units (printers and MFPs) and shipment value increased 5.9% to more than $1.2 billion in the same time period. All four of IDC's largest regional markets saw positive year-over-year unit growth in the production print space in 3Q15. Key contributors to the worldwide increase were Asia/ Pacific (excluding Japan) with 15.7% year-over-year growth, the U.S with 15.3%, Western Europe

with 12.1%, and Japan with 1.0%. All categories in the production print market recorded year-overyear gains. Label & packaging was up 15.0%, production grew 12.7%, and mid-production increased 9.1%. High-speed inkjet shipments grew 8.8% year over year. Canon, Ricoh and HP are the top 3 vendors in this space. Their combined market share accounts for more than half of the global high speed inkjet segment. "All production-class technologies saw annual gains in the third quarter, showing the health of the worldwide digital production industry. As expected, after slipping in the second quarter, high-speed inkjet experienced a tremendous rebound in the third quarter, with system shipments growing 110%

functionality, users can digitise information for searchable access and scan direct to a specific destination, eliminating the need for a paper trail. Key features that a smart MFP brings to firms that are actively looking to increase document digitisation include the ability to scan direct to email, to a specified folder that may be on a network or cloud-based for further utilisation or archival. This makes the devices well-suited to the 66% of European companies which identify the ability to have archived documents in a single location as a key benefit of automating business processes. Various document formats can also be scanned for output in PDF or PDF/A format. In this regard, smart MFPs also help meet longer-term, searchable digital archiving requirements.

Connectivity between latter day cloud-based technologies, digital out of home (DOOH) functional applications and traditional production segments will show wide-format technologies playing a cogent role in parallel as a complementary counterpart to alternative processes as well as playing its part in a stand-alone environment. The increase in demand for customisation and versioning, plus better quality, faster throughput, less down-time and easier accountability has now given a solid ground for wideformat digital print in many print environments, including those that are predominantly analogue. The future won’t see an end to traditional processes but it will herald greater diversification across areas where digital print can play a strong practical and economic role across the variable business models that apply to today’s industry players.

The wide-format appeal continues to grow Wide-format print will find its stronger markets that generate great profitability for its users is in applications away from the mainstream work

24

Challenges presented by opposing and parallel technologies won’t affect the wide-format segment for the foreseeable future. Indeed, increasingly it continues to grow in appeal as it crosses all budgets, speed necessities, the handling of different widths and the introduction of automation. Additional benefits, including greater environmental awareness and greener practices through lower energy consumption, also play a part in shaping the future

of ink-jet, as does the increase in workflow and complementary software integration for a true endto-end environment. Where wide-format print will find its stronger markets that generate great profitability for its users is in applications away from the main-stream work. Indoor and outdoor displays, banners, point-ofpurchase, retail advertising, vehicle graphics and scaffold wraps continue to bring revenues to the

Practical benefits from digital production

From a practical perspective, wide-format ink-jet production carries the advantage of faster turnaround times, better operating environments, easier logistics, and more efficient endto-end workflows. Additionally, economic and stock reduction considerations have been factored into this mix and these have helped to bring ink-jet processes to the fore. During the past two decades, therefore, there has been a significant change into the way that applications coming under the remit of large or wide-format are produced. This took digital print engines, typically ranging in size from 1.0m to 5m, from being speciality machines into the mainstream market. In that period of time, manufacturers have witnessed a metamorphosis in customer requirements, with today’s considerations in a print device becoming more diverse and eclectic in many environments.

Niche and speciality markets

While the growth in wide-format print continues, it is noticeable

Sophie Matthews-Paul A former photographer, Sophie Matthews-Paul started writing about the printing industry in the late 1970s, with emphasis on the screen process segment and, as computerised techniques began to manifest themselves, she became more involved with data handling and file creation across many pre-press areas. Today she works primarily as an international independent consultant, having been involved at the start of wide-format developments and by following through their evolution into the devices they are today. She specialises in the use of digital print in the graphics, display, sign-making, packaging and labelling sectors, and is now also concentrating on the industrial, functional and textile arenas worldwide.

supply chain that is established in this market segment but, often, at ever tighter margins. Growth areas, such as printed interior décor, are now generating a new interest in the capabilities of digital print with profitability often being driven by overall project management and creativity — areas where print becomes part of the modus operandi and not an isolated operation. Compared with events that cater only for specific areas of the print industry, drupa 2016 extends its reach into all segments so that all areas of the graphic arts and beyond are presented with a strong snap-shot of opportunities and the realisation of trends.

Not so many years ago the wideformat printing market was still in an experimental stage and couldn’t be considered a serious contender for production in commercial environments. Since those early days the advances in technology have been rapid, now reaching the point where digital has become the preferred format for many display applications. Reliability in machine build has accompanied the continuing evolution of print-heads and inks, resulting in platforms that produce consistent results that are fit-for-purpose; nowadays, it is rare to find a print business involved in large format jobs that doesn’t have an ink-jet capability as part of its plant list of equipment. Although there has been significant expansion of digital printing systems among display producers, screen-printing companies, sign-makers and, increasingly, the offset litho sector, this hasn’t

seen the total demise of analogue production methodologies. Where wide-format has scored, complemented by advances made in associative software and the materials available, is by bringing versatility and flexibility to all industry segments where the digital revolution has opened doors to low volumes, one-offs, versioning and variable data. To these criteria can be added environmental benefits through a process that uses no traditional chemistry, plus a reduction in waste and the advantages of justin-time and on-demand ordering by brands and end customers.

that users of machines are not only servicing the more conventional market requirements but are also moving to new niche and speciality areas where digital technology can realise jobs that, formerly, were not feasible. The ability to experiment with ink-jet and different materials is simplified because of fast-set-up and changeover, the ease of the prepress process and the viability of producing one-offs or very low volumes. Additionally, print service providers face challenges not only from competition generated by their counterparts trading in the same market sector but also by new investors in digital technology. Those recent entrants that have opted to take on a niche or specialist segment, rather than merely become a ‘me too’ operation, avoid the inevitable race to win orders in an arena where rivalry can too often be based on price. Nonetheless, the growth in demand for wide-format ink-jet production devices continues across the entire digital spectrum with reasons driven by the desire for higher quality, faster throughput and the need for reliability.

26

Speed versus versatility

Is speed of the essence throughout today’s wide-format printer users? The answer to this million dollar question differs depending on business model and type of demand. Versatility is still key to the throughput benefits of inkjet and diversification can often prove to be the key factor that drives better margins and greater profitability. Ergo, effective workflow is as important as the throughput rates of a particular print device, and investment must be quantified against expected daily volumes, diversity and variability of work. “We know many of our customers are using our printers to produce a wide variety of products on a range of substrates to meet the needs of their customers and to maximise ROI. So one printer can be used to produce everything from retail POS graphics, pop up banners and self-adhesive decals and labels to wall coverings, external displays and vehicle wraps,” Richard Barrow, Senior Product Manager, LFP signage, Epson Europe. Mike Horsten, General Manager

Marketing EMEA at Mimaki, concurs: “I believe that diversity in the offering is the key to success. For the most part, a single production type of print company no longer exists. Offering a diverse series of printing products is making the one-stop-shop a reality.” Flexibility is not only governed by the creativity of the display producer or the sign shop. It is encouraged by technologies that have been developed to minimise down-time during job changeover and the ability to produce applications that are right first time. Every minute wasted when a machine sits idle eats into a company’s overall profitability, and present day device improvements certainly acknowledge these principles when it comes to functionality and performance.

End-to-end workflow advantages

Advances don’t lie only in the print engine’s design and construction; of increasing importance is the benefit of an efficient end-to-end workflow plus integration with onward services that aid accountability, such as streamlined finishing in print-to-cut environments,

MIS/ERP and JDF compliance. EFI’s VP Inkjet Solutions at EFI, Ken Hanulec, confirms: “It is fairly obvious to calculate how a company can increase its throughput and its profits by printing more work on a wider, faster printer. But it is too easy for companies to overlook the ways they can also get better results with a better workflow. So it is definitely a way to gain a competitive edge that needs to be recognised.” “If you are a large print house with multiple printers the workflow is crucial to survival. Without a good MIS system or an automated workflow the amount of work would kill any company in the long run. On the other hand, the demands for perfect workflow are not so important if you are a small company and you know your entire customer base,” Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA, Mimaki. With wide-format print devices across all levels providing key output for an ever growing range of end applications, efficiency continues to increase in relevance. “Our support of workflow is the driving force behind efficiency of our printers,” insists Barrow. “We work closely with our software partners to ensure that the workflow to printer interface is very efficient.”

time and every time, job after job. Workflow automates input file and data processing, colour management, printer and finishing settings in order to avoid delays during the entire production process.” Today’s users of wide-format printers can come from any background, whether they happen to be designers, former specialists in typesetting or repro, sign-makers, screen-printers or the sign-making sectors of the industry. The common feature among all is that every order should meet the quality of output required, produced to an acceptable price, on time. But every print service provider should look at the bottom line and not just production costs. Horsten emphasises: “There are still companies that don’t calculate the entire workflow cost before adding margin. If they can look at the whole cost structure of their business they

would know the profitability for the work carried out.” Growth in the wide-format segment is down to many criteria, based on machine technologies and reliability, running costs, diversification in application type and balancing volume against the versatility of low numbers and one-offs. But device flexibility is proving to be a key factor in future investment where fewer print engines can generate the right volumes across a broad range of materials and applications types. “Diversity is one of the reasons customers like using our hybrid roll/flatbed printers. Many of our customers need to be able to print as many different types of jobs as possible, from corrugated displays printed to traditional banners to everything in-between,” Ken Hanulec, Vice President Inkjet Solutions, EFI. Since drupa 2012, ink-jet developments have continued apace, with the announcement of new inks and faster machines that include automation for material handling, streamline print-to-cut options and the advancement of LED curing. New chemistries include water-based UV-curable formulations, the challenge presented by latex chemistries and the ever present capabilities of aqueous-based, solvent-based and UV-curable options that continue to be used in everyday environments.

Amid market uncertainties, the 19th edition of Sign and Graphics Imaging Middle East Dubai reiterated why the expo maintains its position as the launching ground for new products for the signage and advertising industries in the Middle East and Africa. With over 400 exhibitors this year, and 43 new ones, the show attracted over 13000 trade visitors. Demonstrations of the ever increasing applications of wide format printing were among the biggest highlights of SGI 2016, which also presented the latest developments in digital signage, outdoor media, screen and digital printing industries. As traditional sign making technologies are declining, digital technologies are taking over and offer a multitude of applications that enable print shop owners to increase their business and engage in new applications. One of the wide format printing application highlights of SGI Dubai 2016 was creative car wraps, popular in the US and European markets, is fast catching up in the UAE and other GCC countries. Wrap advertising acts as a mobile billboard, making it easier to target a wider proximity of a brand’s target market. Brand owners are increasingly viewing this application as an impressive addition to their brands’ integrated marketing strategies. The digital signage component of SGI grows with every new edition. As the retail, hospitality, and healthcare industries in the Middle East region recognize the advantages of digital signage, exhibitors are promoting them as more strategically beneficial as compared to static signage because of the flexibility of updating content. In addition, digital signage can be integrated with image capture, touch screen, and motion detection devices. The application of digital signage for interactive advertising and the reducing costs of installation, maintenance, and purchase indicate the exponential growth potential of the digital signage market in this region. Another hot topic was digital textile printing that not only caters to soft signage but now also puts its mark on interior design - be it personalised and individualised solutions or short run. At SGI Dubai 2016 it was evident that print service providers care a lot about the environment. Latex, Solvent-UV, aqueous and UV-LED printers and recyclable, environmentally friendly consumables that were presented at the show received much attention due to their lower impact on the environment. “There has been a sense of revival in the region in a big way post Dubai’s Expo 2020 win. Due to several upcoming projects in UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia the demand within the industry has grown exponentially and that has also had a positive impact on the show. This edition’s growth is a good indicator that the industry is growing at a consistent pace,”

observes Sharif Rahman, CEO, International Expo Consults (IEC), organizers of SGI Dubai. ME Printer summarises the market sentiments echoed by prominent exhibitors at SGI 2016.

Ride on the growth wave leading up to Expo 2020

A positive indicator for the UAE market in the beginning of 2016 is that it is another step closer to 2020, which according to Mani Nabavi, business development manager at Nabavi Group, offers new business opportunities brought by the several projects underway or planned for the mega event. “We expect to see an increasing demand for signage driven by the marketing activities in the run up to Expo 2020 in Dubai. This will also create new printing and signage benchmarks, which in turn will drive demand across the Middle East as printers will aim to catch up to the higher printing and customer service standards,” says Mani. Nabavi Group, through its trading arm Al Shabak General Trading, showcased its expanded range of vinyls used for different applications in signage and graphics since it launched the Multi-fix range of products in 2015. Multi-fix is a subsidiary of Mactac, which is specialized in manufacturing self-adhesive products. “Multi-fix widens our market segment with an expanded product range and a larger customer base at different price points. Mactac and Multi-fix are positioned differently and targeted at the high-end and mid segments of the market, respectively. A large number of our customers have adopted both brands for different applications. We project huge demand for both the brands, as indicated by the buying behaviour of visitors at SGI 2016. The show received a larger number of visitors, particularly from Iran, which is expected to see an economic boom and present huge growth opportunities for the Middle East signage industry after the lifting of international sanctions,” says Mani.

Colour plays a fundamental role in visual communication

Pavan Gupta Director, Colorjet

Digital printing is a fast-growing market in the Middle East, and printers can focus on delivering high quality images consistently as a point of difference. Stefan Braun, area sales manager-EMEA, Barbieri points out that this is possible only with intelligent and accurate colour measuring technology that can help print professionals deliver the highest levels of image quality. Barbieri is a manufacturer and supplier of intelligent colour measurement systems for large format, flatbed, and industrial printing. In 2015, the company partnered with Giffin Graphics to enter the UAE, KSA, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman. Barbieri’s product highlight at SGI was the portable SpectroPad colour measuring and process control device. The wireless spectrophotometer measures a wide variety of different reflective media used in professional digital printing, including large and wide format. Measurements can be taken independently without the need of a computer and directly on the printer. Its integrated touch display enables interaction with the device and provides instant measurement results. “Barbieri is a global specialist in measuring colour, and we develop devices to help print professionals to deliver the highest level of image quality. Our core competence lies in our understanding of colour and its role in visual communication. Adopting a hybrid printing model is the smart way forward

Offset printing alone cannot sustain the industry’s long-term suvival. Therefore, the survival strategy for offset printers should be to adopt a hybrid model. Nayyar Ansari, business development manager, production printing, sales, and marketing division, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Middle East, indicates that as more consumers expect on-demand printing and faster turnaround with the highest quality and the best price, offset printers need to be equipped well to provide the best combination of speed, flexibility, and quality. At SGI, Konica Minolta, along with its UAE partner Juma Al Majid Group, presented the bizhub Press C1100 series production machine with on-demand printing capabilities targeted at printers that want to keep up with high volume of orders and demand for quality. “Currently, only a small fraction of conventional offset printers have invested in digital printing. Konica Minolta enjoys market leaderhip in entry-level solutions for offset printers, which makes it attractive for them to incorporate digital printing within their existing business. Our expertise in the entry-level segment gave us the confidence to move into the mid-to-high volume production market,” says Nayyar.

The market is ready to look beyond price alone

Buying cheap is not always cheap. The cost per square meter on low-end machines can be very expensive. The GCC market is now evolving from price alone to functionality and features, according to Mark Sherman, area director, Screen Europe. At SGI, Screen introduced the Screen Truepress Jet W3200 HS, a wide format UV inkjet printing system targeted at companies that are well established in UV printing, for indoor or outdoor applications. “Such printers are looking to take their businesses to the next level, and they are likely to trade in their existing machines for one that offers much more

features, better quality, higher speed, and special applications. We believe the GCC market is ready for this machine. Its high speed and quality will redefine instore promotions. The Screen Truepress Jet W3200 HS is different from all our other products in the market. It’s the ideal production tool for a wide range of applications. The machine prints full commercial quality fast and at a low cost, which allows a fast return on investment,” says Mark. The Screen Truepress Jet W3200UV HS delivers a speed of 150 square meters per hour at true commercial quality and184 square meters per hour at saleable quality. The standard model, the Screen Truepress Jet W3200, offers a top speed of 85 square meters per hour. If job volumes increase, this system can be upgraded on site to the Truepress Jet W3200 HS specifications; the upgrade allows growth into highspeed, high-volume production. Screen has partnered with Jacky’s Business Solutions to introduce the Screen Truepress Jet W3200 HS (High Speed) in the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, and Qatar. “Jacky’s are experts in these markets. That’s why we felt this product needed their expertise, and we’ve been hugely impressed with their professionalism. The addition of Screen in the Jacky’s portfolio helps them compete in the high-end segment of the market. It’s a win-win partnership for both the companies,” says Mark.

It’s easy for entrepreneurs to start a sublimation printing business

The industry is in the early stages of merging signage, fashion, and interior decoration. The future of wide format printing will be a combination of promotional and functional printing. Wide format printers who’ve previously focused only on signage applications are now looking at interior decoration seriously as a natural progression for business growth, according to Pavan Gupta, director, Colorjet. The Indian manufacturer of wide format digital printers is investing in technology that combines promotional and functional printing in a single machine. At SGI, ColorJet launched the Fabjet-Duo, which is equipped with a dual ink supply system that gives the freedom to choose between any two of three inks in one machine by just a flick of a switch. The Fabjet-Duo has been developed for a target audience in the soft signage segment, particularly for producers of soft signage like flags, banners, hoard-

ings, demo tents, vibrant backlits, etc. “Our new machines are targeted specifically at a niche industry of first time users, particularly entrepreneurs venturing into wide format printing for various applications. The target customer also includes traditional outdoor signage printers who are moving into textile printing. For example, a printer may want to print flags and banners for signage and bed sheets for home use. Such entrepreneurs may not have the volumes to justify investment in machines for each application. However, they could achieve the best of both worlds by starting with the versatile Fabjet-Duo printer and decide later to install dedicated printers for each application as they expand their businesses,” says Pavan.

HP PageWide XL Printers do the job of two printers in one single device, providing monochrome and color prints at breakthrough speeds up to 60 percent faster than the fastest monochrome light-emitting diode (LED) printer.

‘Print & Prepare’ to reduce downtime

Agfa Graphics showcased its Jeti Mira UV-inkjet wide-format printer for the Middle Eastern and African markets. The Jeti Mira is a six-color and white UV inkjet printer aimed at applications ranging from posters, signage, exhibit graphics and POP displays to niche applications such as DVDs, wood, art reproductions, and personalized objects. Its dockable rollto-roll option enables printing on a wide variety of flexible media. The Jeti Mira features ‘Print & Prepare’ technology that allows loading of new media while the printer is still working. The printer features six different vacuum zones - three zones along the width of the flatbed table, at the front and at the back - to ensure the media does not budge as the gantry whisks its way along the x- and y-axes. Agfa also demonstrated the Anapurna M3200i, a high-speed 3.2 meter-wide roll-to-roll UV-inkjet printer, which prints indoor and outdoor banners and billboards in a six, a four, or a four color plus white configuration. In addition, the company presented its eco-solvent inks for industrial and wide-format inkjet printing applications. Walter Nackaerts, managing director-direct export, Agfa Graphics says: “The Jeti Mira provides outstanding quality in six colours and its ‘Print & Prepare’ tech-

nology reduces downtime and increased productivity. We also demonstrated how the Asanti workflow for wide format printers is driving both the 3.2 meter-wide roll-to-roll Anapurna M3200i and the Jeti Mira. It underlines our focus on a matched component approach joining software, equipment and inks.”

Wide format printers can expand into short format digital presses

The biggest market for Xerox lies in the shift from offset to digital printing. Pankaj Kalra, marketing manager, Xerox Emirates, points out that signage and wide format printers, too, can take advantage of innovative offerings to expand into short format digital presses. “With the increasing demand for printing in the MENA region, Xerox is focused on providing value add services and solutions to its current and potential customers. We expect to achieve double digit growth in the MENA region in 2016. Printers that’ve embraced short runs and digital printing have exhibited growth despite recessionary trends in the market, and that’s a positive indicator for us,” says Pankaj. Xerox exhibited its large format and short format digital presses such as the Xerox Color 1000i Press with gold and silver inks printing capability, Xerox Wide Format IJP 2000, Xerox Versant 80 press; complemented by XMPIE solutions and business development services. The Xerox Versant 80 provides production press capabilities with offset-quality performance and automated features for optimizing image quality, color and registration. Printing at 80 pages-per-minute (ppm), the device delivers ultra HD, 10-bit image quality at 2400 x 2400 dpi and can handle a variety of media types with a compact Belt Fuser system and Xerox’s EA Low Melt Dry Ink. The Xerox Color 1000i Press includes an optional Specialty Dry Ink Station that enhances documents with metallic gold or silver dry inks or applies spot or flood creative effects with clear dry ink. Printers can migrate to lucrative foil stamping applications such as invitations, certificates and business cards, to short-run, high-value digital production. Multi-pass printing with clear ink adds an extra textural/dimensional feel and the “pop” of the silver and gold inks. “In order to meet market demands, evolving printing requirements, and competitiveness of the industry players, Xerox is highly committed to innovation and industry leadership. Quality printing equipment will only add value to the business and overall performance when supplemented by meaningful service support. We offer a complete 360 degree approach when it comes to hardware, as we believe workflow solutions, analyst services and customer support with business development services are equally important for our clients, so they can focus more on their core business,” says Pankaj.

Growing applicaton of dye sublimation printing for fashion and sports apparel

Yosuke Yagi Assistant Manager, sales development, Roland DG

Shihab Ahmed Zubair Business Development Manager, Professional Graphics, Epson

Yosuke Yagi, assistant manager, sales development, Roland DG, points out that the ever-growing popularity of sports and fashion apparel opens up new sublimation opportunities everyday, and everything from t-shirts and cycling jerseys to handbags and baseball caps is a possibility. Roland exhibited the 64-inch Texart XT-640, a high-volume dye-sublimation printer designed for the textile printing industry. Built specifically for dye-sublimation – a printing method that transfers graphics inversely printed on transfer paper with sublimation ink to polyester textiles or polymercoated rigid substrates using heat – the XT-640 is targeted at creating fashion and sports apparel. With its state-of-the-art print head technology, reinforced rail and frame structure, and precise ink drop placement, the XT-640 delivers vibrant, colorful sublimated prints at speeds of up to 1,098 square feet per hour (41m2/h). A new feed adjuster at the front of the printer enhances printing accuracy which ensures even tensioning and prevents skewing of the media. “The XT-640 is also equipped to take full advantage of Roland Texart inks, which are specially formulated to produce the bold, vivid colors and deep, rich blacks needed for sublimation applications. The addition of orange and violet inks increases the color gamut for exceptional reds and oranges, deep blues and rich purples, while light cyan and light magenta provide subtle gradations, beautiful skin tones and a remarkably fine level of detail, says Yosuke. The XT-640’s features that optimize production and convenience include the Roland Ink System, which uses one-liter ink pouches to facilitate uninterrupted long-run printing. In four-color mode, the system provides two liters per color. The proprietary Roland Ink Switching System automatically switches to the backup ink pouch when the primary pouch runs out. The XT-640 also comes with the Roland Printer Assist iPad app, which further enables unattended printing by allowing users to check printing status from anywhere in the building.

Print service providers now have a wide choice of presses available in the market to buy at various prices. However, they tend to focus only on the intial cost of the machine and overlook the runnning costs. That’s why its important to educate and encourage them to lower their overall cost of ownership by helping them reduce their consumption of

Digital cutting boosts productivity and lowers labour costs

Colour Byte, the regional distributor of Zund, showcased the G3 digital cutter with modular tool and material-handling systems for specific cutting needs. G3 cutters are available with a beam height of 30, 60 or 120 mm (approx. 1, 2 or 4 in). Depending on the configuration, up to 110 mm / 4.3 in thick

materials may be processed. The cutter has a feature called ‘tandem material loading’ or ‘pendulum’ production in which, loading/unloading occurs on one side, while cutting continues without interruption on the other. This setup increases workflow efficiency, keeps idle time to a minimum and maximizes throughput. With a tandem setup, the cutting surface is divided into two independently controllable vacuum areas, front and back. Each side is equipped with controls for turning the vacuum on/off and resuming production. Once material is placed in the working area, push the button to re-activate the vacuum and processing continues. The machines’ Board Handling System allows high-volume, non-stop production. “Zund G3 eliminates the bottlenecks in your finishing department by automating all cutting/trimming functions. Manual cutting, with all inherent costs, potential for mistakes, and lack of efficiency, is reduced to an absolute minimum. With optimized workflow, G3 further boosts productivity, says Ralph Busselot, managing director, Colour Byte.

The signage and graphic industry’s top innovations were unveiled yesterday at SGI Dubai 2016, which is spread across a larger floor space and is much bigger than its previous editions. The show continues to serve as a meeting point for print and production manufacturers, sign makers, media and marketing agencies, developers, architects, and brand and image consultants, among others. One of the wide format printing application highlights of SGI Dubai 2016 is its dedicated area for car wrapping. The trend of creative car wraps, popular in the US and European markets, is fast catching up in the UAE and other GCC countries. Wrap advertising acts as a mobile billboard, making it easier to target a wider proximity of a brand’s target market. Brand owners are increasingly viewing this application as an impressive addition to their brands’ integrated

Indian manufacturer of wide format digital printers ColorJet is demonstrating the Fabjet-Duo and the Polo Turbo. The Fabjet-Duo is equipped with a dual ink supply system which gives the freedom to choose between any two of the three inks–Reactive, Disperse and Pigment, and by the flick of a switch, the printer becomes a reactive or pigment or disperse ink printer. The Polo Turbo is a high-speed industrial grade solvent printer, built on a heavy duty structure. Its independent drive technology drives each nozzle independently to achieve high speed production speeds of up to 1,600 sqft per hour. The Fabjet-Duo offers print service providers the option to use just one machine for printing with two of the three inks rather than investing in two machines. The machine is targeted at producers of soft signage like flags, banners, hoardings, demo tents, and vibrant backlits. Additionally, the Fabjet-Duo offers access to printing cotton and polyester fabrics on the same machine and also makes for a solution for sampling as well as mass production along with printing of home textiles. Features include inflatable rods for uninterrupted media loading, variable drop technology for sharper images, and automatic wiping system for consistent head performance.

According to Mimaki, China, Taiwan, Russia, Korea, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa are experiencing a surge in wide format application jobs, and the need to produce short run jobs on a wide variety of media has created room in these markets for a wide format printer that could master miscellaneous jobs at a high pace at exceptional quality. Mimaki has therefore launched the LED-UV curing inkjet printer SIJ320UV, a 3.2m wide format printer developed specifically to support the needs of wide format print service providers in the abovementioned regions. This dedicated roll-to-roll printer has been devleped for various signage media, including PVC and other banner materials. Mimaki also introduces the versatile LUS-120 UV ink, offering printers the flexibility and durability required for signage jobs. The ink delivers durable printing results at all times, even on soft media such as (non-laminated) banner materials. Moreover, in order to make the printer’s job load even more practical, it allows for simultaneous printing on two rolls, up to a maximum mountable media width of 1,524mm for each roll. That way, printers can simultaneously handle two different jobs on one machine. The patented dithering Mimaki Fine Diffusion 1 technology (MFD1) processes image

marketing strategies. According to International Expo Consults (IEC), organizers of SGI Dubai, several small and large businesses will continue to turn to car wraps as one of the best, most cost-efficient forms of branding and advertising. Furthermore, the application of car wrapping has extended from advertising to making style statement by differentiating one vehicle from another. “Car enthusiasts are seeking to customize their personal vehicles with full vehicle wraps. Typically, people turn to car wraps to make their cars stand out from the crowd with unique colors and finishes, as car manufacturers today only offer a limited selection of colors. With more awareness about the versatility and convenience of car wraps, more consumers will undoubtedly turn to this method of personalizing one’s vehicle, observes Sharif Rahman, CEO, IEC.

SGI Dubai 2016 is showcasing some of the world’s best innovations in the digital signage industry. The global digital signage market is expected to touch US$20.03 billion by 2020; according to a report by Grand View Research Inc. The extensive utilisation of digital signage in the GCC region as an efficient platform for interactive advertising and the reducing costs of installation, maintenance, and purchase indicate the exponential growth potential of the digital signage market in this region.

“SGI Dubai infuses fresh ideas as it is an ideal platform which features some of the state-of-the-art innovative technologies in digital signage and the printing industry. These technologies are bound to make an impact on the visitors that have come to the show from across the world, says Abdul Rahman Falaknaz, Chairman of IEC. “Our exhibitors this year have vouched to be part of next year’s show which will be a much larger event than this year. This indicates that there is a huge demand within the Middle East and African markets as the exhibitors have immensely benefited from this year’s show. We are proud to say that we are the largest show in this category across the Middle East and Africa region. We value our exhibitors response to this year’s show and feedback from them have boosted our confidence to create another yet another successful show for them in 2017 at an even larger scale, adds Falaknaz.

ink as well as its price, according to Shihab Ahmed Zubair, business development manager, professional graphics, Epson. Epson launched a new series of printers – the SC-S series for signage and SC-F series for dye sublimation. The company also announced a two-year standard warranty for its S-series of printers and up to 25 percent discount on its ink prices. The SC-S series (SC S40610, SC S60610 and SC S80610), which features the latest generation Epson PrecisionCore TFP printhead, is targeted at signage, high-end displays and dĂŠcor. Applications include exhibition displays, posters and backlit panels, to POS materials, vehicle wraps and wallpaper. Working in tandem with a new formulation Epson UltraChrome GS3 or GS3 with Red inks, users can produce a wide colour gamut for highly accurate colour reproduction. The SC-S80610 benefits from the addition of both red and orange ink to expand the colour gamut. A ‘Precision Dot’ high-quality mode makes it easy to improve the overall print quality on a variety of media, which includes clear film, vinyl, canvas and photographic paper. The SC-F series (SC-F7200 and SCF6200) is aimed at the cost-effective production of superior-quality textiles and promotional goods. The SC-F6200 also offers the flexibility needed to sublimate onto a range of hard substrates. Targeted at companies producing promotional goods, the printer can be used to sublimate onto tailored goods, including mugs and phone and tablet covers. The SCF7200 has been exclusively created and developed for the roll-to-roll textile market. “The SC-F series enhance Epson’s dye-sublimation line-up by offering customers the chance to expand their production capabilities. All the new models include a number of ways to help customers keep their costs low. High-capacity ink systems mean a low printing cost per square metre, while the use of Epson’s genuine inks ensures less cleaning and fewer printhead replacements are needed to help reduce possible downtime. Disposing of waste ink is now easier and more cost-effective as both printers now include a two-litre bottle to collect wastage. The products are also available with Epson’s managed print service programme, which allows tighter budget control and helps reduce overstocking,â€? says Shihab.

Insight SGI 2016

SGI 2016 review and impressions

room, or at least at the demo room of the main distributor.

T-Shirt printers

Dr Nicholas Hellmuth, FLAAR Reports SGI there were 100% more entrylevel laminators than at many other expos. Other than the Kala brand (which hopefully is still made in Europe), probably 90% of the laminators come from China. In general, the presence of Chinese brands was notable, more than I remember in past years, and their booths were in an easily accessible location. Let’s now look at the signage printing and workflow product classes one by one.

36

One aspect I noticed at SGI 2016 was that many distributors of past years were replaced by new distributor brand names. In other words, there were plenty of new distributors there for their first time. So there was plenty for the attendee to see, experience, and learn about. Cutters come in every size and shape; more than a dozen were exhibited. This means that attendees had good options, from entry level into heavy-duty CNC routers. For digital flatbed cutters, Zünd and Kongsberg were present at the high end segment and an abundant diversity of CNC routers from China. A large number of CO2 laser engravers were present from China. I estimate there were almost as many cutters at SGI 2016 as there were printers. The sheer number of booths with media and signage substrates was a surprise: about 72. There are some expos elsewhere in the world which at most have five booths with laminators. Here at

Solvent printers

Solvent printers continue to be utilized in print shops and continue to be manufactured. Printers with full-solvent ink are rare, but mild-solvent are still common. There were several booths with solvent printers where people in nearby booths commented on the unexpectedly strong odor of the solvent inks wafting across the aisles. But none of the odors today comes anywhere near close to full-solvent of ten years ago. I miss seeing SUV, solvent UV,

company is putting enough effort behind it: HP. HP shows latex printers no matter what. I admire the dedication and stamina of HP teams to move ahead with their latex ink concept.

Latex printers

Textile printers

There were no original Mimaki latex printers and no new iteration of a Mimaki latex printer either. Nor was there any innovative ink printer anywhere else at the expo: everything was standard: solvent, UV-cured, or textile printers (all water-based). HP Latex printers were in the main HP booth plus several distributors. The reason why UV-cured ink has become an international success is that there are over 100 factories producing UV-cured printers. There are dozens of different ink companies producing several different varieties of UV-cured ink: mercury-arc cured and LED cured. One reason latex ink has not been as successful is because only one

The Granada dye sublimation textile printer in the Oce Heliozid booth

SGI 2016 had plenty of calendering machines; Giffin Graphics had two different models of Monti Antonio. What is notable is that when I did test prints on the dgen Teleios Grande, because the sublimation unit had so much work to do, they moved the direct-to-fabric print to one of the Monti Antonio printers and the results were bright and colorful (which is what d-gen is known for). I normally think of a calendering machine for transfer paper, so this was the first time I had seen one do an already printed fabric (I assume with disperse dye ink). Maria Renee Ayau, textile printer workflow review editor for FLAAR Reports, notes that for some polyblends, if they have 50% cotton and 50% polyester, a calendering machine can provide the additional heat that works best on the cotton aspect. Century Star had its own booth as well, though more and more they are adding their own standard printers above their sublimation units. There are many sizes, shapes, and price ranges of textile printers. Two of us from FLAAR Reports just attended the awesome textile expo in Milano a few months ago. But most of those printers

are for clothing and upholstery, scarves and other luxury good. For a signage expo it is more appropriate to have printers for flags, banners, and soft signage. In this respect, SGI had a good range of entry-level to mid-range signage textile printers, plus is also moving into textile printers for interior design (and printers for wall coverings). I would have enjoyed testing many of the other brands, but Andrea Negretti (Business Manager, d-gen) and Philippe G. Husni, General Manager, Heliozid Oce each know I like to do print samples of my photographs of flowers and animals of Guatemala. In other booths it takes too long to get access to the printer and some companies simply can’t accept files during a trade show. Philippe Husni points out: there is a worldwide trend towards soft signage as it is considered cleaner and more eco-friendly both from the aspect of media (recyclable polyester vs eco-unfriendly vinyl) and from the ink point of view (water based dye sublimation vs eco-unfriendly solvent). I have a lot more to learn about both printers (d-gen and two models named Granada in the booth of Heliozid Oce). But the print samples of each were professionally rendered. What counts significantly is the kind of cloth they print on: the better the fabric, the nicer the image. We look forward to evaluating other textile printers in the future, preferably at their factory demo

UV-cured printers

Key big-name international brands of UV-cured printers were present: efi Vutek, Swissqprint, Durst, Screen, Mimaki, Oce, Agfa, Jetrix, and popular brands from China, RTZ Flora, Handtop and

but since there was never an opportunity to do a full-scale FLAAR Report, we never had the chance to detail the frankly remarkable aspects of this. At 50% of expos there is no more SUV whatsoever. Let’s hope in the future that ink chemists will unveil additional iterations which catch my interest.

I found six inkjet T-shirt printers and several booths with OKI toner-based printers for T-shirts. Mutoh had their new ValueJet 405GT, evidently with pigment ink (instead of a sublimation ink or eco-solvent ink). The Durager600SD, a T-shirt printer from Durafos, in the Warshi Trading booth, used eco-solvent ink. In the future I would like to test the difference between using toner, pigmented ink, sublimation inks, and eco-solvent ink. Of course a lot depends on what colors and what graphic design is in your Tshirt design. Fluorescent inks also make an impact.

Opinion SGI 2016 more. Printers of most sizes and shapes were present: desktop UV (wide range from Mimaki, booth of Signtrade), mid-sized (again Mimaki), dedicated flatbed UV: Flora, Challenger and more; roll-to-roll: Flora and efi Vutek in grand-format; and other brands at entry-level sizes. You could find both LED-cured and mercury-arc cured; efi Vutek, Durst, Jetrix, Dilli, and RTZ Flora have flown me to their printer factories so know these brands and corporate backup the best. It was unfortunate that the Dilli distributor was missing, as I would have enjoyed seeing these well-engineered Korean printers at the advent of 2016.

There was no Xante and no Gongzheng and no RTI Vortex Memjet printers any more on exhibit in Dubai. But Xerox had their model, and Océ had their improved Oce ColorWave 910, which is available The Sam Ink section of the Wellcare booth

an ink that is good one year can change either gradually or suddenly to an inadequate ink if they decide to use cheaper chemical components.

Media and substrates

The Vutek HS100 Pro

and serviced via Heliozid Océ. The HP booth at Sign Istanbul did a “100 meter” printout for us as a test. It was such a fabulous test print that we featured them in our FLAAR Report on Sign Istanbul. We brought files to test print at SGI but evidently the HP printer here was a tad disjointed and the special size and shape of tool to fix the minor hiccup was not in the booth, so we were not able to do any tests. Instead the team at OCE did test prints of my high-resolution photographic images. Memjet vs HP PageWide compared with KIP is a good subject for future discussion. But it is crucial to be brought to the demo room, preferably at the factory, or else at least a major regional demo center.

15 years ago water-based printers filled the booths of Roland, Mutoh, Mimaki (and Encad). Then Epson decided it wanted the giclee, photo printer, and proofing market for itself, so Epson printheads for not available for water-based printers of other brands. Then HP did so well with their water-based printers that Encad had not much future, especially since we had both brands and FLAAR Reports clearly documented that HP Designjet printers were significantly better than any and every Encad. Now, not even in China do you see many copies of

After-market ink

Most ink was rebranded in the booths of the large distributors. But for us to evaluate ink, it is helpful to know which brand and thus which factory. Even more crucial is to visit the factory at least every two years, plus to understand which ink is made in this factory, and which ink is rebranded from another ink factory elsewhere. For example, there was an ink brand in the Netherlands which made their own ink for offset and flexo or screen printing, but at one point may have bought ink from another company to sell into the inkjet market. A company may make its own water-based and eco-solvent ink, but buy their UV ink from another factory. This is why the FLAAR Reports are preferred over press releases, because we actually visit ink factories in the USA (STS Inks), China (Hongsam), Taiwan (Jetbest), Korea (Inktec), and Singapore (Sam Ink). Plus, we visit with distributors who help us understand which inks are good, and which are disasters with clogging. The other crucial aspect to know about ink brands is that

Laminators

The show featured a large number of laminators, including four brands of flatbed applicators (flatbed laminators). Frankly SGI in Dubai had more booths with laminators than most big international signage expos in Europe and USA. It is important to have laminators at a printer and signage expo, because many people elsewhere say “our printer no longer needs any laminator.” But actually, laminators are just as important today as they were 5, 10, 15 years ago. So SGI did a good job providing attendees with lots of options for laminators.

Toner printers

Since many brands do not allow their sales reps to do print tests at a trade show, we were not

LED & LCD dynamic digital signage

LED and LCD dynamic digital signage are a challenge for expo organizers. If they are showing a movie of the Minions or Rio (macaws in Brazil) or any other cute animated film, it attracts lots of attention (away from exhibitors of printers). If the LCD billboard booth is showing 10 meter wide images of a Korean Girls band or female models, it distracts people for several aisles. Thus it was nice that the LED and LCD dynamic digital signage presence at SGI 2016 was not disturbing people in the aisles nor in nearby booths. This is definitely an aspect of SGI which can continue to grow. I would suggest for signage and printer expos, if they wish to have more LED and LCD dynamic digital signage, that they do this, literally, in a separate hall, as a co-located expo. That way everyone who enters this hall knows what to expect. For example, in many Chinese expos, most of the CNC routers and CO2 laser engravers are in separate halls, because the fumes from mechanical or chemical cutters are unbearable for everyone else.

Trends evident at SGI 2016

Since SGI in Dubai is the first pertinent trade show every year, literally the first international class printer expo in the world, it is helpful to see and understand what trends were noticeable. We can definitely report that the wide-format inkjet printer business is alive and well. There were scores of brands of every size and shape of signage and graphics printer here at SGI 2016. It was also nice to see two 3D printers and toner-based printers. Most “sign and printer expos” forget, or ignore, toner-based printers. Here, again, the advantage of visiting SGI is that they have tonerbased printers. It was very nice to see the well designed Konica Minolta booth with their impressive toner chemistry and printer engineering. Altogether, two of us from FLAAR Reports enjoyed being at SGI 2016. We definitely look forward to attending the 20th annual Sign & Graphic Imaging Middle East in January 2017, this time a few days later in the month (January 15-17, 2017). In the meantime, we hope to provide additional information on the workflow and applications of wide-format inkjet printing in the pages of future issues of ME Printer magazine. And, when it is possible to interact with tonerbased office and production printer companies, we would enjoy doing more evaluations of different models of Konica Minolta and other toner printers.

Other water based printers

Encad water-based printers. Canon actually often has the most water-based printers of any printer expo. HP had one single Zseries water-based printer. Epson had a few but Epson wants the solvent and textile market.

Whereas most ink was rebranded at SGI, most media was exhibited directly by the factory brands. However again, the same facts should be recognized. A company with a media factory in Europe may probably be importing other media from China and rebranding it. So again, we do our best to get to the factories, such as of Yeong Jeou to learn about PE (available through their brand Aria).

able to evaluate any of the Xerox printers whatsoever. But the team in the Konica Minolta booth were helpful and kindly “stopped their presses” in order to print samples on the spot: plus they bound the results.
