For traditional marketers and PSPs, conversations about signage start and end with prices and square meters of printed material. While they remain caught in a price war, a new breed of entrepreneurs is looking at signage differently; they have a broader definition of large format printing, and they see it as a new business opportunity in the creative industries. New investment into this business is coming from interior designers, architects, photographers, fit-out contractors, in-house department of companies, and freelancers.

DED survey shows improved business confidence in Dubai Expectations of higher volumes are strongest for the manufacturing sector and weakest for the trading sector Survey results from the latest quarterly Business Confidence Index (BCI) of the Department of Economic Development (DED) show a marked improvement in business confidence in Dubai in the fourth quarter of 2016 over the same period in 2015. Results indicate that the 2017 budget, Expo 2020 and Dubai Plan 2021 are fueling expectations as Business Confidence Index was at 120 points in Q4, 2016; compared to 116.1 in Q4, 2015. The DED conducts the quarterly surveys to gauge the perceptions and outlook of the business community in Dubai. Khalid Al Kassim, assistant directorgeneral for economic policies in DED, said, "Dubai’s AED 47.3 billion budget for 2017, among other things, aims to boost infrastructure spending and create more than 3,500 new jobs in line with the Dubai Plan 2021, together with growing public and private sector activity leading to the Expo Dubai 2020 have combined to boost business expectations regarding levels of employment and volumes of sales and profits." As the fourth quarter of 2016 ended, businesses remained confident about the first quarter of 2017 with a composite BCI score of 121.0 points––higher than the 116.1 points recorded during the 4th quarter of 2015. "The survey shows that the business outlook for Q1, 2017 is stronger than that for

Khalid Al Kassim

Q4, 2016 and Q1, 2016 in terms of revenues, volumes, profits as well as employment, as respondents anticipate new orders, or projects, and stronger demand for their products," Khalid said, adding that the forecast for selling prices in Q1, 2017 is comparable to the Q4, 2016 and Q1, 2016 projections. The net balance for expected sales revenues has increased from 36 per cent for Q1, 2016 and 37 per cent for Q4, 2016 to 46 per cent for Q1, 2017. The net balance for volumes has shown a similar improvement; from 35 per cent for Q1, 2016 and 36 per cent for Q4, 2016 to 45 per cent for Q1, 2017. For Q1, 2017, 53 per cent of the firms anticipate a rise in volumes backed by expectations of new projects/orders, higher demand and a seasonal uptick during the first quarter of the year. However, 8 per cent of the respondents forecast a decline in volumes due to weaker demand following from regional conflicts and economic slowdown. Expectations of higher volumes are strongest for the manufacturing sector and weakest for the trading sector. The survey also shows that the manufacturing sector is most confident about revenues, volumes, profits, employment and

new orders. The services sector is most optimistic about its selling prices, while the trading segment exhibited the weakest sentiments with respect to all the parameters. Within the services sector, the construction segment is most hopeful of higher volumes during Q1, 2017 with a net balance of 75 per cent based on expectations of new projects/orders. Within the trading sector, the construction and computer sub-segments are most optimistic about volumes during Q1, 2017. The overall business community in Dubai exhibited higher confidence relative to exporters with composite BCI scores of 121.0 and 112.4 points, respectively. Domestic-market oriented firms have a stronger forecast than exporters for all the parameters in the survey. Expectations regarding the business situation show that the proportion of firms anticipating an improvement in their business conditions has declined marginally from 50 per cent for Q4, 2016 to 47 per cent for Q1, 2017. The proportion of firms anticipating deterioration has also shown a modest decline from 9 per cent to 7 per cent quarter-to-quarter while the number of businesses expecting stability has increased from 41 per cent to 46 per cent. According to the survey, 71 per cent of the respondents do not expect any negative factors to hinder their business operations. Competition remains the main challenge for Dubai’s firms, as cited by 8 per cent of them. Plans to upgrade technology and expand capacity have moderated both on a quarterly and annual basis. 61 per cent of the respondents hope to invest in upgrading technology in Q4, 2016 versus 66 per cent in Q3, 2016 and 63 per cent in Q4, 2015. 57 per cent of the firms intend to invest in capacity expansion in Q4, 2016 compared to 66 per cent in Q3, 2016 and 67 per cent in Q4, 2015.

Kabeer Jalaluddin

Delta Group has inaugurated its new multi-service facility in Dubai’s National Industries Park (NIP) which will host several of its subsidiaries. The 23,000sqm facility will offer a comprehensive range of end-toend solutions under one roof. This includes the Group’s flagship Delta Printing Press, Brandscape Advertising, Magic Screen, Pulp, Delta Labels and Delta Interiors. Equipped with the latest technology, the fully integrated facility is the first of its kind to be set up in NIP. Housing several of the Group’s subsidiaries under one roof will offer unparalleled convenience to clients and enable cost optimization. This will especially benefit projects and campaigns which span different media. From advertising and marketing, to printing, labelling and interiors, Delta Group’s new facility expects to redefine industry standards for integrated workflows. To further augment its service capabilities, Delta Group has also announced it will shortly launch a

new subsidiary for manufacturing of corrugated cartons. Delta Packaging Industries will also be based in the National Industries Park (NIP) where it will occupy a 20,000 sqm site. Kabeer Jalaluddin, chairman and managing director of Delta Group, said: “As a home-grown business, we are very proud to be based in the UAE. The country serves as a regional print hub, not just attracting business from within the region, but also from Europe. Not only are we very pleased to offer our clients

this new facility, but it also allows us to significantly expand our production capacity and operational capabilities into newer segments and markets.” “Innovation and quality are the key principals by which we operate and 2017 will be an important year for us. We plan to continue scaling our operations with further expansion and also venture into new verticals. This will allow us to offer more allied services across the MENA and European markets," Kabeer added.

With the new facility, NDigitec will offer fabrication solutions by using wood, MDF, steel, acrylic, aluminum, and LEDs for applications ranging from digital signage, fit-out, turnkey, event podium, display and exhibition stands. Its new services include

electroluminescent panel (EL Panel) signage, LED signage, fit-out and turnkey project services, event fabrication, podium and display stands, POS retail stands, ready-made and custom-made exhibition stands. Mohammed Shawer, general manager, NDigitec DigiPrint & Fabrication, said: “The new production facility is a major step forward for NDigitec and will strengthen the company’s position as the market leader for creative production services. The company has an in-house team of over 20 years of proven competence in fabrication

The concept of selling readymade exhibition stands on our web-to-print platform, Dubaiprint. com will be implemented in 2017 and we believe this will be game changer in the industry.”

Beijing JHF Technology Company charts global expansion The first step in this direction will be the setup of a demonstration facility for international customers in Thailand and a larger manufacturing facility in China Beijing JHF Technology Company, the Chinese manufacturer of industrial digital inkjet machines for the signage and textile industries, has announced an aggressive global expansion plan for 2017. The impetus came from the company’s growth in 2016, when its annual revenue touched $65million, an increase of 70% over 2015. Beijing JHF ended 2016 with 10 channel partners in Asia and installation of over 30 its JHF range of industrial printers outside China. The company projects its annual revenue to exceed $200 million by 2018. Beijing JHF Technology Company, established in 1997, offers three product lines – the Leopard, Vista and JHF. The JHF series is an industrial product line manufactured by using components procured from Germany, Netherlands, and Japan. The company has a 56,000 sqm manufacturing facility in Beijing devoted exclusively to the UV product line and a facility at Shanghai for producing the solvent product line. It has a distribution network across Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and South America, and an installed base of more than 15,000 machines worldwide. To facilitate its expansion, the company has restructured its sales team for international markets outside China. Currently, it has a growing team based in Hong Kong,

Singapore, and India handling the Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa regions. In 2017, it plans to consolidate its position in these regions while penetrating new markets and pushing for bigger market share in the US, Europe, and Latin America. The first step in this direction will be a demonstration facility for international customers to be operational in Bangkok, Thailand, in Q2 2017. The demo centre will house the latest JHF printers with trained staff to handle international prospects. Furthermore, a new manufacturing facility, four times the size of the current facility, is being setup to become operational in Q4 2017, in Shandong, near Beijing, to boost production of JHF printers. Morgan Shi, president, Beijing JHF Technology Company, reminisced about the early days of building the company and the challenges he faced in establishing the brand in the Chinese market. “As a pioneer in digital inkjet printing in China with a strong focus on R&D and product innovation, our mission has always been to become a world-class leading company. We identified our core competency while attempting to develop various printer components, faced with the choice between offering cheap, low-quality products and world-class products at high prices. We decided to go ahead with the latter option, to develop high-end UV printers and

showcase China’s potential to the world. It didn’t seem a smart idea initially because it was difficult to sell a Chinese printer at or above the prices of leading global brands, especially in the domestic market. We were able to overcome those challenges through patience and persistence. When we didn’t sell any printer, we used the time to rectify mistakes and perfect our technology and products. At the time, we interacted with the printing industry and communicated to business owners that in order to survive, they had to become the ‘number one’ or the ‘only one’. It struck a chord with them and thus we began our journey toward excellence with their belief and support,” he explained. Morgan pointed out that as the company expands globally, it faces a lot of similar challenges. “The JHF brand is relatively less known in international markets, and again, we have to work on changing the established perception of Chinese brands as cheap and low quality in international markets. I’d say we have the world’s best products in terms of precision, speed, quality, and stability. We invest over 10% of our revenue into R&D, and we have only one goal, which is to be the world number one in industrial printing solutions,” said Morgan.

Xerox inks first global Brenva HD deal in Egypt Copy Express, the Cario-based customer, is targeting a monthly print volume of up to 3 million pages using the production inkjet press Xerox announced at Drupa 2016 that it was disrupting inkjet by opening up new possibilities for inkjet entry into the transactional, light direct mail and book markets. The Brenva HD production inkjet press was touted as the solution to meet the industry’s demand for a

machine that can offer the versatility of a cut-sheet platform and meet the economics of an inkjet press. Copy Express in Cairo, Egypt, became the first print service provider in the world to invest in the Brenva HD, having signed the deal during Drupa and installing it in late 2016.

Ashraf Youssef, director of the graphic communication operation, Xerox Egypt, and Hisham Ibrahim, managing director of Copy Express, talk to ME Printer about the new growth opportunities for both companies made possible by the intersection of inkjet and cut-sheet.

“A cut-sheet inkjet color revolution is imminent in the production digital printing market”

Ashraf Youssef

ME‌Printer February 2017

Is Copy Express a new or repeat Xerox customer? What were the factors that led to this deal?` Copy express is not only a repeat Xerox customer but one of Xerox Egypt’s partners. Its partnership with Xerox has spanned for over 30 years, resulting in a long-standing relationship and comprehensive understanding of the Egyptian print and copying market. Both companies share the same values when it comes to professionalism, results, high quality deliverables and innovation. Copy Express utilizes a number of Xerox products. The Brenva Deal comes as a natural result of the trust and long history between both companies.

10

Could the Xerox iGen have been an alternative option for Copy Express’s requirements? The Brenva is built on the iGen frame and incorporates the same paper path and feeding system as the iGen but the differences between both are extensive. Brenva

utilized a lot of the key features of iGen and incorporates it into the inkjet technology that Xerox acquired from its purchase of Impika in 2013. It includes the innovative cut-sheet technology and captures pages that iGen can’t reach. So, Brenva is technically an upgrade to the iGen. Moreover, Copy express already owns an iGen, thus the Brenva comes to complement the technologies owned by Copy Express leading to a comprehensive printing platform. It will also support and provide Copy Express with new opportunities and solutions to drive the production of more high-value applications such as direct mail, transactional, books and catalogs and thus supporting them in developing and expanding their offerings. What does this deal indicate about the growth potential in Egypt for Xerox? What are your growth projections for 2017?

This deal is a testament to the growth potential in Egypt for Xerox and showcases the importance of Egypt’s market to Xerox Corporation. Through this deal, the Egyptian printing industry pioneers in utilizing the first ever Xerox cut-sheet inkjet technology, Brenva HD, through Copy Express. This is the first Brenva HD deal across Xerox branches around the world. It comes as part of Xerox commitment to provide the latest technologies to the Egyptian market in conjunction to its launch globally. We are targeting a 10% growth in 2017. Do you now have the lead you wish in Egypt’s cut sheet inkjet market? How big and competitive do you expect this market to become this year? We believe that with having such innovative cut-sheet inkjet we will be able to meet the increasing need for providing high quality printing while cutting major costs and therefore will help us increase our share in this market. A cut-sheet inkjet color revolution is imminent in the production digital printing market. The production market worldwide is growing by 5%, and within that, inkjet is growing by 10%. That’s why Xerox developed a complete range of inkjet devices. While the numbers may not be the same in the Egyptian Market, yet we can see the same trend and believe it’s only a matter of time till the cut-sheet inkjet technology takes over a good share of the market production and demand.

“We are increasing our printing capacity to expand our client base in the educational, industrial and commercial sectors” For what specific markets and applications - transactional documents, direct mail, books, other - did you invest in the Xerox Brenva HD? Is production printing your main business? Copy Express has been operating in the market for over 30 years, offering a multitude of printing services spanning; digital printing, offset printing, scanning, copying and finishing, with an annual printing volume that exceeds 30 million. Copy Express was established in 1986 by Nasser Othman, with 6 branches across Greater Cairo and operates as one of Xerox Egypt’s key premier partners. Copy Express invested in Xerox’s Brenva HD to expand its client base and to increase our printing capacity, reaching a number of sectors that include the educational, industrial and commercial sectors, since the Brenva HD focuses more on the production of more high-value applications such as direct mail, transactional, books and catalogs. What were the specific features of the machine that was required in your company? Why was Xerox chosen over its competitors? This partnership is not new to us. Copy Express has been Xerox’s partner for around 30 years and we have utilized numerous printers from Xerox, and we were always keen to invest in Xerox’s new technological solutions some of these include: iGen 150, Nuvera 144, DocuColor 135, Color 1000, iGen 3 digital press and Nuvera 288 printers. We have been studying the inkjet cut-sheet technology for over 2 years, and believe that it will provide a number of opportunities to the printing sector in Egypt. Taking our strategy and outlook into consideration, we could not find a better partner than Xerox to utilize our plan and reach our objectives. The Brenva HD features include maximizing press productivity including the spectrophotometer

Hisham Ibrahim

feature to assist in color calibration, the object-oriented color management feature to help distinguish text from graphics and enhance the quality of the images. As well as the K-Only feature that allows the press to select and print specific-colored jobs that immensely decreases printing costs while preserving their quality. Brenva HD can also take on printing massive documents that can reach up to 364x520mm in size, giving copy express a competitive edge in the Egyptian market, which will all help in offering better quality of printing services to our clients and therefore increasing our client base. What’s your current or expected monthly print volume which requires investment in the Xerox Brenda HD? We were able to increase our productivity volume by 1.5 million in only one month after installing the

revolutionary Brenva HD. We are targeting to reach up to 3 million pages per month using the Brenva HD, averaging out to 197 pages per minute. We are also expecting to grow our productivity volume by 18 million papers per year, using Xerox’s Brenva HD, in addition to the company’s current printing volume, which exceeds 30 million. How does this printer enhance your business? What are your ROI projections? We believe that the demand for the inkjet market will increase, and that is why we have invested in Xerox’s Brenva HD, which will maximize our production capacity, while cutting significant printing costs and offer printing services of the highest quality. We are very happy to have the Egyptian market take precedence across the world in launching this revolutionary technology through Copy Express. Brenva HD

Kodak announces winners of Sonora Plate Green Leaf Awards 2016

ME‌Printer February 2017

Eight printers from across the world have demonstrated outstanding efforts to reduce their environmental impact

14

Eight printers from across the world have been selected by Kodak as the 2016 winners of the company’s Sonora Plate Green Leaf Awards. The program, which first launched in 2014, recognizes customers who have demonstrated outstanding efforts to reduce their environmental impact through a variety of initiatives and best practices. Award entrants are judged on a range of criteria, including management practices to improve energy and water efficiency, participation in local community sustainability efforts and the use of eco-conscious materials and supplies. All submissions are reviewed with scores determined by a panel of Kodak judges. The 2016 Sonara Plate Green Leaf Award Winners are: Reynolds and Reynolds (US), Informco (Canada), Groupe Estimprim (France), Royalpack (Poland), UVO communication (S.Africa), Ohshaika Printing (Japan), Kava Printing (China), NPE Print Communications (Singapore). All the printers are users of Kodak Sonora process free plates and are also leaders in their respective markets in integrating sound environmental practices into their operations. These methods include monitoring of energy and water usage, participation in local community sustainability programs and the use of eco-conscious materials and supplies. “It’s an honor to select eight of our customers to receive this prestigious award. Printers around the world continue to see the real benefits that sustainable printing practices deliver to their bottom lines,” said Richard Rindo, Kodak general manager, WW offset print, and vice president, print systems division. “From the adoption of SonoraPlates, to streamlining workflows and integrating more environmentally friendly materials, printers are demonstrating that sustainability is good for business and the future of the industry.”

The award is named for Kodak Sonora process free plates, known for yielding dramatic environmental and economic benefits for customers without sacrificing quality and output. Sonora plates remove the need for the plate processor, which requires chemicals, water, and energy while generating waste. Sonora plate volumes continued to grow in 2016 in tandem with the industry's demand for more sustainable printing solutions to address new applications and opportunities, all while increasing profitability. With both economic and environmental sustainability at the forefront of more and more printers' strategic investments, Kodak predicts this trend to continue and anticipates that 30% of the company’s plate volume will be process free by 2019. Sonora Plate Green Leaf Award Winners •• Reynolds and Reynolds (US): As part of its comprehensive environmental strategy, Reynolds places a strong emphasis on recycling. The program, which recycles paper, cardboard, plastic, metal, glass, wood pallets, electronic components, chemicals, foil, ink and toner cartridges, results in savings of estimated 5,700 cubic yards of landfill space in an average year. •• Informco (Canada): ISOcertified since 1999, the company has made significant reductions in energy usage, water consumption, and VOC emissions through rigorous monitoring programs. Informco was the first printer in Canada to win the CCME (Canadian Council of the Ministers of the Environment) Pollution Prevention Award in 2002. •• Groupe Estimprim (France): A member of the France network of the Global Compact, Groupe Estimprim monitors energy usage and uses energy-saving features on their equipment, and uses

eco-friendly materials such as vegetable inks, alcohol-free solvents, recycled paper and paper from sustainably managed forests. •• Royalpack (Poland): The company has implemented a range of initiatives to reduce its environmental footprint, including solar energy to heat water, and the company invests in modern machinery to lessen the amount of waste generated during the manufacturing process. •• Ohshaika Printing (Japan): Ohshaika’s environmental strategy focuses on reducing energy, water, and chemical waste with clearly set measurement goals. As part of the company’s overall plan to reduce energy use, Ohshaika uses renewable energy sources, is ISO14000 certified and with SONORA Plates the company has reduced ink consumption and has zero chemical waste across its operations. •• Kava Printing (China): With a significant focus on developing original printing and packaging products for high-end cosmetic brands and instruction manuals for major industrial enterprises, Kava’s introduction of process free plate technology is part its plan to strengthen its sustainability profile. •• NPE Print Communications (Singapore): On an ongoing basis, the company has invested in upgrading older machines to more energy-efficient equipment and rigorously monitors energy and consumable use that are tied to annual reduction targets. •• UVO Communications (South Africa): A dedicated environmental officer at UVO is responsible for coordinating and measuring the company’s energy and water saving programs and enterprise-wide recycling activities.

Komori and Screen GP partner to develop integrated workflow

ME‌Printer February 2017

The solution combines Komori’s KP-Connect Pro printing task control software, and Equios 5.0, the latest version of Screen GP’s universal workflow platform

16

Komori Corporation and Screen Graphic and Precision Solutions Co. have completed development of a new integrated workflow solution, which according to the companies, enhances automation in all processes from prepress to printing and through to postpress. The solution combines Komori’s KP-Connect Pro (formerly K-Station 4) printing task control software, and Equios 5.0, the latest version of Screen GP’s universal workflow platform. Komori and Screen GP have already installed the workflow at printing company Mizukami Insatsu Co., and are currently performing verification tests. The workflow is being used at the Mizukami Insatsu site to improve automation along a hybrid printing process that includes a PlateRite plate recorder, Lithrone G sheet-fed offset press and Impremia IS29 29 inch sheet-fed UV inkjet digital printing system. These systems will also be linked to postpress devices via JDF, creating a workflow that supports comprehensive inte-

grated control from prepress right through to postpress. Komori’s KP-Connect Pro is positioned between the MIS and production site, where it brings transparency to complex process information and allows all operators to share the latest production details. With its direct link to Komori’s production equipment, the software is able to automatically set work instructions and collect precise information on operating results. While it can be run from iPads or other tablet devices, its schedule creation/transmission and result collection functions enable sophisticated real-time control of all production devices. Screen GP drew on its technical knowledge of prepress and printing processes and combined this with its expertise in cutting-edge inkjet technologies to create a technology that offers high-speed processing using the latest RIP core, color management linked to paper information and imposition functions that integrate Screen’s full prepress

knowhow, allowing it to function as a control center for a wide range of print devices. Katsuya Kawai, president of Mizukami Insatsu Co., said, “One of the prime goals we are promoting is the creation of a design for a smart factory by 2025. All devices, peripherals and processes will be connected using IoT concepts, enabling dramatically improved transparency of real-time operations. A single operator will control multiple systems, part-time employees, AI and robotics. Our vision is to create a smart factory that uses next-generation printing logistics to achieve a truly new dimension of productivity. The verification project currently being performed with Komori and Screen GP is basically the first step toward realizing this vision. I am looking forward to even greater cooperation between printing companies and equipment manufacturers as we move forward. This will enable us to develop the optimal type of facilities we require for the future.” EijiKajita, director and operating officer and general manager, corporate planning office, Komori Corporation, said,“I firmly believe the next-generation integrated workflow solution formed by Equios and KP-Connect Pro will help to significantly improve the optimization and performance of prepress and press operations, and in fact the entire printing process. We are currently performing verification tests of this workflow at Mizukami Insatsu, a highly progressive company that operates print lines including combined offset and digital systems.” Tsuneo Baba, president of Screen Graphic and Precision Solutions Co., added,“The integrated workflow has created a comprehensive solution platform that will help to address a wide range of printing needs. With its installation at Mizukami Insatsu, the workflow is expected to make a major contribution to automation along the entire printing process.”

TRENDSETTER AND SONORA: CTP AND PROCESS FREE PLATE COMBO DELIVERS MAXIMUM PRODUCTIVITY AND SUSTAINABILITY.

KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates completely eliminate the processing step, without requiring Printers to make sacrifices on productivity or print quality. They are imaged on a platesetter and mounted on press just like any other plate, and work with manual or auto load systems. During the normal pre-dampening process, the fountain solution swells the coating. The pre-damp is kept to a minimum to prevent removal of the coating. Then, when the inking rollers are engaged, the un-imaged coating is “stripped” from the plate by the tack and shear of the ink—a purely physical interaction, rather than a chemical process. The plate coating is carried away on the substrate with the ink, typically within the first few sheets. THE PLATESETTER

The compact TRENDSETTER Q400/Q800 Platesetter with the Single Cassette Unit (SCU), can automate

plate loading and unloading for up to 120 plates with uninterrupted operation. Its small footprint reduces shipping waste and costs, as well as space requirements. And, the new cooling system yields up to 30% power savings from its initial design —using only 770 watts while imaging. NEW IN 2017

Kodak announced several advancements in its platesetter and process free plate technologies. Kodak’s plate scientists are pushing process free capabilities even further with the introduction of the KODAK SONORA UV Process Free Plate. The new plate design allows Printers using UV—including the newer low-energy UV presses—to achieve higher run lengths than with any other process free plate available today. Productivity is amplified with the addition of the Multi-Cassette Unit (MCU) to the TRENDSETTER’S list

of capabilities. The MCU option features online access to four cassettes of 120 plates each, for a total of 480 plates—available without any manual intervention. Automated platemaking with the TRENDSETTER Q400/ Q800 can be accomplished with less than half the space requirements, and up to 80% less power usage than comparable MCU’s on the market today. KODAK CREATES THE WORLD’S FASTEST PROCESS FREE CTP

The new ultra-fast W speed option significantly increases TRENDSETTER throughput to 68 plates per hour on an 8-up plate and 75 plates per hour on a 4-up plate when imaging KODAK SONORA XP Plates— creating the world’s fastest process-free CTP. This configuration delivers more efficient, compact and faster plate making—all without chemistry or processor use.

Insight Large Format Printing

Customer education starts with ‘why’ and ‘what’s next’

ME‌Printer February 2017

Canon Middle East organised a roundtable to explore how large format printing business transformation can occur through more awareness about new applications, emerging markets, and best industry practices

20

The large format printing industry in the Middle East is largely driven by the printed signage market for marketing and corporate communications in the form of billboards, vehicle and building wraps, shop signs, and interior branding. Advances in large format printing technology and new applications such as interior decoration, clothing, fashion, and personalisation have opened up new revenue streams for print service providers (PSPs) and opportunities for their business transformation. However, insufficient education, fixed mind-sets, and resistance to change are among the biggest barriers to adoption and investment on wide format printers for new applications. Traditional marketers and PSPs continue to view signage as printed or fabricated materials with graphics attached to a surface for the purpose of communication. The conversations start and end with prices and square meters of printed material. While they remain caught in a price war, an ew breed of entrepreneurs is looking

at signage differently; they have a broader definition of large format printing, and they see it as a new business opportunity in the creative industries. New investment into this business is coming from interior designers, architects, photographers, fit-out contractors, in-house department of companies, and freelancers. This changing trend in entrepreneurship is instigating transformation in traditional PSP businesses, forcing them to evolve into business solutions providers. But how far have they reached and where do they need to start? Furthermore, in what direction is the industry heading? Canon Middle East explored these questions recently by organising a roundtable featuring different stakeholders in the large format printing business – the manufacturer, distributor, and customer – to gain new perspectives on how they can unlock the potential of wide format printing and transform their respective businesses. The participants shared the following opinions and insights.

“A qualified partner entrusted with new technology is the catalyst that can drive change” One of the biggest threats facing the large format printing industry is the price war. Another challenge is that enquiries often come from the purchasing departments, which are not entirely aware of the risks of ordering products that don’t achieve the goals of their marketing departments. In order to overcome these challenges, we go back to the question of why print buyers should come to us when everybody has the same machine and material. The answer is that we share the responsibility for the brand’s image and success and make it our top priority. We prefer talking with brand owners or custodians who have an uncompromising approach to quality and execution of their communication strategy instead of a short cut solution to printing signage at the lowest prices. Anybody can invest in a large format printing business and the time is always right. The first question entrepreneurs should ask themselves is why they want to enter this business. Providing end-to-end solutions is about connecting the various business activities of the customer, discussing all the pros and cons of an activity, and reaching a consensus. They should also know what they are printing and why they accept a printing job, along witha thorough understanding of

design principles and the ability to visualize the final output. We encourage our customers not to limit themselves to a certain way of marketing because they have the opportunity to utilise every space in which customers interact with their brands in order to maximize the return on investment. This could be achieved by choosing a different medium or modifying and adapting the content for various media. When we understand the marketing objectives of our customers by putting ourselves in their shoes, we are able to suggest improvements or changes. That’s when customers realise that they also need something more, and that we can do much more that they thought we could do. This exercise involving customers provides the opportunity to upsell and cross-sell other products, as well as establish a longterm relationship with them as their trusted partners and advisors. Value-added services are not restricted to marketing alone. They can extend to logistics, IT, or and any other business function. We offer logistics services to customers, particularly retailers, who print and fabricate marketing collateral for seasonal promotions. We coordinate with all parties involved to deliver, install, col-

Yasmeen Bhat, managing director, Yas Media

lect, and store the collateral until they are required again. Technologyand product innovation alone cannot solve the problems of price war or bad decisions. Change comes with education, and a qualified partner entrusted with new technology and resources can become the catalyst that can drive change.

“Our biggest challenge and responsibility are ensuring that our customers make the right choices”

Yasser Al Farra, managing director, Tenaui Middle East

Wide format printing services provide entry into several industries today, and this business is attracting new kinds of investors. The new type of service provider need not have a printing background. Such investors are not interested in a big infrastructure and they intend to market and sell their products and services online before any other channel. A large number of them are creative individuals who like to exhibit and sell their work, and who see a business opportunity to generate income from their creative passion. The affordability of new machines has made it easier for artists, photographers, and designers to buy their first large format printer and offer new services. Educating such new customers is not only about communicating the features of products, but also how to increase their customer base. It is in our interest to see that their businesses expand. When interested

buyers approach us to invest in machines, they have specific applications or services in their minds. Our role is to prompt them to ask the question “what else can we do with this machine or service?” So we initiate discussions about how to increase profit margins, enter new markets and acquire new customers by using the same machine. As a result, they begin considering their business expansion. However, start-up companies with limited capital cannot afford to make a wrong choice. They need to have foresight while investing in a machine, taking into account their future customer base and to what extent can that grow before an upgrade or another machine is required. Our biggest challenge and responsibility are ensuring that they make the right choices, particularly during the first and critical stage of their businesses.

“An educated customer becomes empowered to take the lead and offer better solutions”

Sami Khoury, operations manager, Image Systems

Creative professionals always demand new tools to realise their vision. New large format printing applications attract their attention when they see the possibilities of new markets for their work. The current large format printers have applications not only for signage production. They are widely being adopted in industries such as architecture, interior design, healthcare, retail, and education. As applications grow and printing machines become more versatile, demand will also increase from well-informed customers. Customer education is a must to create awareness about new applications and unlock the true potential of large format printing. An educated customer becomes empowered to take the lead and offer better solutions. We start this process by understanding our customers and their businesses and providing superior service without losing focus on the commercial viability of our products for their business. That is possible when the customer is guided in the right direction to make the right investment decisions. When customers make the right commercial decisions, it becomes a win-win proposition for all parties involved, from the manufacturer to end-user.

“Our conversation with customers start with their businesses and not Canon’s technology”

22

As an end-to-end solutions provider, Canon is at the forefront of studying consumer trends and developing products to respond tochangingmarket conditions and user expectations. Today we are as excited about digital signage and augment reality as we are about wide format printing because they complement each other well when employed for an integrated marketing campaign. As a result of the media convergence, everything from brochures and billboards to augmented reality is a market for Canon and its customers. Product development at Canon is not about creating the biggest or fastest machines, but in line with the ground reality. A product is useless if it doesn’t have the right people to utilize it well and drive new business. Also, it should take into account the growth potential and limitations of a market. With regard to signage, we develop printers envisioning how they can become a part or solve a problem in communication. Outdoor or indoor advertising doesn’t work in isolation anymore. A printed billboard is connected to an integrated marketing campaign which includes public relations, digital and social media, and their returns are quantified. A machine can be a relatively low investment for a large format printing business. The profits come from value-added services. A photographer could increase his or her profits and gain new customers by investing in a large format machine with finishing options to provide photo books, which is a highly profitable product. Our aim is to put

Ayman Aly, professional products marketing manager, Canon Middle East

the right tools in the right hands. Customer education is the tool that enables business growth. We maintain regular communication among customers, distributors, and other partners to share best industry practices and gain feedback for improvement. The conversation always starts with the customers’ businesses and not Canon’s technology, because it’s the outcome that matters.

SGI Dubai 2017 Products & Applications

Signage has evolved to help companies achieve customer engagement and communication goals

Shadi Bakhour Canon demonstrated its range of capabilities in large format printing for indoor and outdoor signage applications with products such as the Arizona 1280GT flatbed printer for flexible and rigid media; Océ ColorWave, designed for applications in graphic arts, architecture, engineering and construction; imagePrograf iPF8400SE, a 44-inch printer designed for poster creation; and imagePrograf Pro-6000S, designed for production signage and commercial photography. The topic of interest was the highly anticipated UVgel printing technology, which Canon claims will transform large format roll-toroll printing. According to Canon’s initial announcement, the technology includes a new UV curable ink from Canon that instantly gels on contact with the media, resulting in precise dot placement and area control for consistent high-quality images at high speed. Canon has announced that the UVgel technol-

ogy will be at the core of a family of new roll-to-roll printing products, the first of which will be a high productivity 64-inch roll-to-roll printer to be released in the spring of 2017. Ayman Aly, professional products marketing manager, Canon Middle East, provided an update on the UVgel technology. “The sign and graphic imaging industry is rapidly expanding, and volumes printed on roll-to-roll printers are growing year on year. In addition to this, over 40% of orders usually need to be turned in 24 hours, demonstrating the pace and the expectations that are now commonplace in this industry. Canon’s UVgel technology addresses these limitations; it enables to jet the ink faster onto the media which increases the productivity and speed, while using less ink and still delivering an improved colour gamut. With these innovations, Canon continues to enable its customers and partners meet the demands of the 21st century print landscape,” said Ayman. Canon also showcased its XEED range of projectors, targeting verticals of retail and hospitality. Venkatasubramanian Hariharan, B2C business unit director, Canon Middle East, said: “Digital coupons, interactive mediums such as digital mannequins and AR/VR are changing how the world looks and interacts with signage, opening an exciting gamut of possibilities. Canon is exploring the space of digital signage by offering customized solutions with its 4K XEED projector range that are ideal for a wide range of markets and applications including simulation, museums, art galleries, planetariums, higher education, medical education and training.” Shadi Bakhour, B2B business unit director, Canon Middle East, elaborated on the company’s product development strategyin line with changing business models. “Canon is perceived as a company that offers end-to-end solutions both in the B2B and 2BC markets. In the B2B market, we take into account crucial factors such as productivity and profitability while designing products for enterprises. In the B2C

Ayman Aly market, we prioritize the emotions of the consumer. As the only company that caters to all these market segments, we are finding new ways to integrate all our strengths to offer the best value to our customers. With regard to signage, we are offeringa full range of products including large format printers, projectors, cameras and other imaging equipment, workflows, software and mobile applications to plan and execute print, digital and interactive signage effectively,” explained Shadi. The potential for signage growth is huge in the Middle East region, especially in countries like the UAE which is highly committed to transform its cities into smart cities, which fosters a demand for more exchange of information. Shadi pointed out that signage in various forms will play an integral role in every communication strategy in the future. “New applications of large format printing and the integration of print, digital, and interactive signage have opened new markets in the retail, interior decoration, hospitality, leisure and entertainment industries, driven by an increasing need to communicate with customers, promote brands, and create new ways to engage with customers. So, when we develop better printers and other products, we also look at how they can be integrated with our customers’ business processes to benefit both the businesses as well as the end users,” said Shadi.

Interior decoration is a large format printing market waiting to be tapped HP demonstrated how its Latex technology and new range of large format printers enable interior designers and decorators to transform residential, commercial, and consumer spaces with creative and personalized printed materials. The HP stand featured a custom-built lounge area with HP Latex printed materials used to decorate the floor, wallpaper, window blinds, sofa covers, and cushions. Michael Smetana, head of marketing, Graphics Solutions, HP Europe, Middle East & Africa indicated that the interior and design industries are growing at considerable rates, with companies in the UAE spending up to AED300 million, taking the top spot in the GCC on interior

design expenditure. “A lot of customers are still unaware about the full potential of large format printing technologies and how their applications extend beyond signage to interior decoration and personalization of items. Affordability and ease of use have made large format printers viable for entrepreneurs, particularly designers and architects, to invest in them for low-volume production. Designers are beginning to order large format printers for in-house printing because they wish to modify their designs and have greater control over the creative process,” said Michael. HP also showcased a broad portfolio of its latest large-format products and solutions. New

SGI Dubai 2017 Products & Applications add value to promotional products, including textiles. “We’ve seen a growing number of our UV-curable printing systems being installed in fabrication laboratories, shopping malls and hardware/DIY stores to enable the creation of customised items. These new printers will ensure the ultimate customer experience in these locations by delivering requested products faster. We also expect to see eager reception for these new printers in sign and display companies, who are always seeking more productive and profitable ways to conduct business,” said Mike.

Mimaki is making its popular Kebab option available for the UJF-3042 MkII and UJF-6042 MkII printers. Using rotary rollers, the Kebab option allows printing directly on a wide range of cylindrical objects. The UJF-3042MkII is compatible with the Kebab MkII model, while the MkII L model is needed for the UJF-6042MkII. It enables printing with high quality on cylindrical products with diameters from 10 mm to 110 mm, including wine and water bottles, seals, candles, cosmetics bottles and more, making it possible and affordable to produce on-demand original products in

runs as small as one. “Our customers have been very creative in their use of the Kebab option. And for many, it has opened up new businesses and new revenue streams. Cosmetics bottles are a good example. With the many different regulatory requirements from country to country, short runs of cosmetics bottles are becoming more common. In addition, the Kebab option makes it very affordable to produce one-off direct-print labelling. This could be a personalised bottle or a bottle memorialising a special event to be used as a gift item,” said Mike.

market conditions, we believe the key factor is affordability. Today’s market requires a solution that offers a stepping stone into the world of rigid media printing. Furthermore, a rigid media printer is not complete without a cutting machine to cut different types of material such as acrylic, aluminium, foam board, corrugated paper, cardboard etc. The Colorjet and Jwei brands are compatible with each other and our partnership allows us to explore ways to optimize the rigid media printing and finishing processes,” said Pawan.

Cheaper, quality alternatives keep original ink prices in check

Sam Leong Singapore-based Sam Ink, a manufacturer of ISO-9001 ISO-14001 wide-format large-format branded water-based, latex, eco-solvent, and dye-sublimation inkjet inks, presented its range of inks which are cheaper alternatives to original inks from the likes of HP, Epson, Canon, Roland, Mimaki, Mutoh, Konica-Minolta, and Seiko. Sam Leong, managing director, Sam Ink, described original ink prices as unrealistic in light of the current economic challenges faced

PSPs. Accordingto him, the best way to tackle high prices is to offer alternatives at significantly lower prices without compromising on quality and R&D investment. “We specialize in the development and advancement of inks for wide format printers, and invest a lot of money into research and developmentin fields such as nanotechnology to improve the quality of our inks, procure the best raw materials and offer the best prices. The prices of inks from Sam Ink, which

could be as low as 10% of that of original inks, make the difference for companies working hard to stay in business. We are taking this lead and setting a trend to reduce ink costs for print houses. We expect this trend and customer feedback will force manufacturers to further reduce the costs of original inks. Our approach to R&D and pricing is determined by what businesses are willing to pay for inks by taking a realistic view of their economic situations, said Sam.

Quick observations By Dr. Nicholas Hellmuth, FLAAR Reports

3D and multi-dimensional signage Many clients are asking print shops for 3D signage. Or if they are not yet asking, your sign shop can win new clients if you can offer 3D signage. To create 3D signage you do not need a 3D printer (not yet, since 90% of the 3D printer brands can only produce tiny 3D structures). If you want to impress your clients you can generate a 3D image much quicker by printing on a honeycomb sandwich board, use a Zund, Aristo, or Esko Kongsberg cutter, and build an entire life-sized

tree, or an entire vehicle, or an elephant or sculpture. At SGI, a totally unexpected multi-dimensional sign was that of the designers of Xanita company in the booth of Blue Rhine. At the back of their booth, the sign changed from reading Xanita to reading Blue Rhine depending on where you stood. This was achieved by cutting the back side of the Xanita board so it could be folded into ‘triangles’. So it was like a sort of two-lens lenticular (but better, because it is a new concept that not many people yet use). We would also enjoy drawing attention to the 3D moiré effect which you can achieve if you select one of the nice Swissqprint UV flatbed printers. With special software to prepare your image you can achieve a superior result: better than old-fashioned lenticular. At FLAAR Reports, we have about 15 universitytrained graphic designers. Several of them are industrial designers. We would like to have the software available so we can use our high-resolution photographs of scarlet macaws, jaguars, bees, and awesome spiders of Guatemala as examples to showcase the 3D moiré effect if you have a Swissqprint with the special software for the graphic designer.I find the Swissqprint’s visually multi-dimensional capability definitely worth having the FLAAR Reports do a study project, since among our 700,000 readers around the world we enjoy assisting them to see opportunities which provide clients with new options. As more and more signage moves to digital LED and LCD, it helps if wide-format inkjet printers can find

a new manner of creating 3D signage from flatbed UV-curing printers.

Plenty of solvent printers There were 35 UV-curing printers on exhibit at SGI 2017. We found 7 textile printers and 6 T-shirt printers (plus lots of OKI toner printers for T-shirt heat-press). I found 36 solvent printers. Keep in mind that of the 35 UV, five of these are tiny desktop units, so there are only 30 wide-format UV-curing printers. In other words, there are more solvent printers than any other kind of printer at this expo. I can understand when people say ‘solvent is dead’. In the USA and Germany you are not going to find more solvent printers than UV. But at SGI 2017, there were plenty of solvent printers: mostly eco-solvent, but also mild or lite-solvent. Only one or two were likely to be full solvent (but two used VUTEk printers were probably full solvent). We of FLAAR Reports like to do sample prints on printers of every size, shape, and ink. The booth which assisted this year was HeliozidOce, using their GRANADA eco-solvent printer to produce the nice bright shiny colors you see here (diverse maize cobs from Mayan people of Guatemala).

“We are hoping to attract over 12,000 visitors to Gulf Print & Pack 2017” Q&A with Lisa Milburn, managing director of Gulf Print & Pack ket value is forecast to reach $24bn this year and in an industry that is so fast moving, attending Gulf Print & Pack will help printers stay ahead of the market.

Lisa Milburn

Why is GPP 2017 a must-attend show? What's new for visitors this year? Gulf Print & Pack is the biggest, dedicated event for the Middle East and covers every aspect of the printing spectrum. The show has been running in Dubai since 1997 and I think it is fair to say that it is widely acknowledged as also being the best place to see what is new in terms of the latest machinery and applications. 2016 was a huge year for innovation with many new technologies

flooding the market. Gulf Print & Pack 2017 will give printers who didn’t make it to other shows like Drupa last year, the first proper chance to find out how they can enhance their business and add to their service offering. As with previous editions, the show floor will be busy with live demonstrations and new launches, so now is the optimum time for printers to see what is happening in their industry and find out how they can maximize new opportunities for growth. The Middle East print mar-

How has GPP grown since its previous edition, in terms of exhibition space, total number of exhibitors, and number of new exhibitors? The show has grown year-on-year since first being held and 2017’s edition will be around 10 percent larger than 2015’s event. Buyers coming to the show will be able to network with 200 of the print industry’s leading suppliers. The usual industry leaders will be there in force including AFRA, Ali Alhashemi Trading Co, Bobst, Canon, Giffin Graphics, Heliozid, Kodak and Prestige Graphics. We also have a line-up of brand new faces with first time exhibitors such as Barberan, Holoprint Security Solutions, Imaging Care, Konica Minolta, PACFORT Packaging and Sun Papers & Labels. What is the expected footfall? 2015’s show received a footfall of 11,918, so we are hoping to attract in excess of 12,000 visitors this time around. How is GPP positioned to grow in the coming years? The Middle East’s print market is very dynamic and investment worthy, and the show is very much geared around the industry’s specific needs. We look at the key trends in the local and global market and try to reflect them in the show floor and exhibitor mix. While commercial printing is still in good health, the biggest growth area we are seeing world-wide is the label and package printing sector. For instance, right now the market is shifting. There is an increasing move more towards digitization and short run print jobs and I think show visitors will see this mirrored in the solutions being exhibited and by the exhibiting companies they will meet.
