Digital is growing because it can offer advantages that analogue print cannot provide. Digital print can incorporate variability that makes it more effective than the static alternative. Users of digital print are innovating with applications and exploring new ways to offer novel functions and features to print buyers. Innovative users will find more applications and niches to exploit the advantages of digital – some at the expense of offset printing, but also by opening totally new opportunities.

Mohammed bin Rashid library to house over 4.5 million books The AED1 billion project is aimed at transforming the UAE into a global cultural and learning centre includes eight specialised libraries: for Children, Youth, Family, Business, Arabic, International, Popular and Multimedia. The second pillar is promoting reading; the library will pursue the Arab reading challenge project, launched earlier by Sheikh Mohammed, following the initiative of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, announcing 2016 as the year of reading. The challenge includes 2.6 million students from 20,000 schools within the Arab world. It will also host over 100 annual cultural events. The third pillar will focus on spreading content via an e-library with over 2 million titles, and 1 million audio books. The library will also print and distribute 10 million books in the next few years, which will be distributed to people in need. The fourth pillar will focus on supporting authoring and translation, through its initiative, which aims to translate 15,000 titles into Arabic every year. The fifth pillar focuses on protecting the Arabic language. This will be done by hosting the main headquarters of The International Council for the Arabic Language and publishing the Mohammad Bin Rashid Contemporary Arabic Language Dictionary. The sixth pillar will include preserving cultural heritage by displaying rare publications, including a special section for the collection of Al Maktoum and an exhibition for Arab arts.
Best in Class The new KBA Rapida 105 PRO Even better kit and more automation defines the Rapida 105 PRO. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister and ruler of Dubai has launched an AED1 billion project to build the largest library in the region. The seven-storey, one million square feet Mohammed bin Rashid Library will be built in Al Jaddaf area in Dubai. It is scheduled to open in 2017 and will house more than 4.5 million books and include several areas for interaction, events, activities, educational and cultural festivals. The library will also host several cultural and cognitive initiatives, such as the Dh2.4 million 'Arabic Language Award', launched recently to help people embrace their Arab identity. There will also be a museum of the Arab heritage and the history of human civilisation as well as venues for arts and literary exhibitions, heritage preservation initiatives and a 500-seat theatre for lectures, seminars and launching of intellec-
tual and cultural initiatives regionally and globally. "We are the leaders of civilisation, duty and culture, and so we need to revive the spirit of learning and curiosity within our culture through innovative initiatives that push our boundaries," said Sheikh Mohammed at the grand launching event. "This is why we decided to start the Year of Reading by launching this state-of-the-art library and to let everyone know that we will transform the UAE into an Arab and global cultural and learning centre while strongly establishing reading as a societal norm. "We want a dynamic library which will reach you before you reach it, visit you before you visit it, and which encourages you to start reading from childhood, while supporting you as a scientist, researcher or specialist, when older. The library will be a compound for books, a community for readers and writers, and an association for content, culture and thought owners," Sheikh Mohammed added. The library will also serve as a platform for hosting and launching the most significant intellectual and cultural initiatives regionally and globally. "The human mind is the centre of development and the book is the tool used to renew the mind. A nation can never grow without a renewed mind and a lively, knowledgeable spirit," Sheikh Mohammed noted. The library is based on six pillars: the first is the main library, which

Jordan Computer Forms Company, one of the largest business forms printing company in Jordan catering to banks, airline companies, health sector and governmental institutions, has opted for the Synchroline 330, a flexo machine from Italian company Lombardi Converting Machinery, which specializes in high-precision flexographic narrow-web presses. The flexo printing machine is characterized by a smart setting and maintenance and control of the printing register, that adjust in real time any micrometrical deviations, allowing for print on a variety of materials such as BOPP, PVC, PE, PET, paper, adhesive or thermal paper, cardboard, and laminates. Jordan Computer Forms Co (JCF), founded by Radwan Mohaisen in 1987, specialises in forms printing. The company started with a small single colour offset press. Within a
few years, JCF became a specialist in Jordan for printing bank checks, flight tickets and boarding pass, banks ATM secret number envelops and security printing on thermal paper, cash register rolls. The production grounds increased from 3000sqm to 6500 square meters. Today, the company has six offset machines and employs 70 staff.
Engineer Khalil Muhaisen, director, Computer Forms Co., comments: “We looked at buying our first flexographic press to complement our existing six web offset presses. We discovered Lombardi on the Internet while doing a research of potential brands for our investment. We decided to implement a new advanced and updated flexo machine as an answer to increased demand for printing on many different substrates, including paper and synthetic flexible films among others.” “The dynamic market changes and changes in technology, that have occurred especially in the paper converting industry, have been so rapid that it is hard to predict what the coming years will bring about. The main mission of JCF is to provide protection and financial security for the highest quality product at a competitive price,” adds Khalil.

Going paperless does not save trees The time has come for serious reconsideration of the erroneous 'save papersave trees' movement, according to a new study Two Sides North America, a nonprofit organization promoting the sustainability of the graphics communications industry, has released a new study outlining key facts on why paperless initiatives do not save trees. The findings point to mounting evidence that loss of markets for paper and other wood products, a large portion of which are produced from wood harvested on privately-owned land, increases the risk of forest loss. The study was conducted by Dovetail Partners, an environmental think-tank specializing in forestry research and analysis. "This study is another example of why slogans such as 'go paperless -- save trees' or 'go green -- go paperless' are not only misleading, but false. Over the past 60 years, the number of trees on managed U.S. forest lands has been increasing considerably due to responsible forestry practices. Wood is a valuable renewable resource that
we are taking care of," explains Phil Riebel, President of Two Sides North America. Key facts from the study show that, even in a declining market for printing and writing paper: • Using less paper does not mean that wood harvesting will be reduced. • Similar or rising volumes of wood are being harvested in key forest regions of North America for other uses including lumber, fuel pellets, and pulp for use in production of packaging, tissues, and textiles. • The market focus is likely to shift to other opportunities besides paper given the broad utility of wood, global needs for raw materials, and incentives of many forest owners to derive income from their lands. Private forest ownership and stable paper markets create a synergy that has long yielded tens of thousands of jobs, rural income, and strong incentives for continued investment in forests for the near
and long term. However, if efforts to reduce wood markets succeed over an extended period, the result would likely be loss of forest lands rather than the reverse. Summarizing the research results, Dr. Jim Bowyer, lead author of the Dovetail study, states, "A common and simplistic, yet erroneous view, is that using less paper will lead to more trees across the landscape. Just as eating fewer apples will result in fewer rather than more apple trees, decreased consumption of wood products will not yield more trees and forests. Similarly, claims that using 'tree-free' paper made from other fibers (ex: recycled fiber, wheat, sugarcane) will 'save trees' are equally misleading. The development of markets for wood is essential to maintain forest lands as forest for the long term. Meanwhile, the time has come for serious reconsideration of the erroneous 'save paper-save trees' movement."

Fashion meets digital printing in New York
Print4All to debut in Milan in June 2018
The annual Epson Digital Couture event during New York Fashion Week showcased designer collections created using the Epson SureColor F-series of printers
The show combines Converflex, Grafitalia and Inprinting
Epson hosted its second annual Epson Digital Couture event in February in advance of Fashion Week in New York City. Showcasing 11 designers’ collections from North and Latin America created using Epson’s textile printing solutions, the runway experience was built around the theme “Harmony and Peace through Fashion.” The Epson Digital Couture event showcased the design freedom, efficiencies and capabilities of Epson’s digital printing technologies for the fashion and textile industry. “Since Epson is not a textile brand, we started having runway shows at our printing trade shows. Nobody expected that, and we started to create some noise,” recalled Catalina Frank, product manager for professional imaging at Epson, including the SureColor dye-sublimation product line. “The next step was being part of Fashion Week Brazil, in São Paulo, where we were able to work with the well-known Brazilian designer Lino Villaventura.” Soon Epson was featuring their own runways at textile trade shows, a first for the company, in countries like Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. Following its 2015 acquisition of For. Tex, a leader in the sales and marketing of textile inks, and leveraging its ongoing partnership with Robustelli, a company specializing in the development, manufacturing and sales of digital textile printers, Epson
also showcased an assortment of high-quality textile samples during the event. These relationships uniquely position Epson to further accelerate the growth of the global textile printing business. “Digital technology has changed every industry it’s touched, and now it’s revolutionizing the fashion industry,” said Keith Kratzberg, executive vice president, Epson America. “The Epson Digital Couture event showcases the amazing creative potential and stunning color reproduction that designers are able to achieve using Epson’s textile printing technology. Today this is a $7.5 billion market projected to grow more than 34 percent worldwide (InfoTrends 2014-2019 Digital Textile Forecast), and a tremendous opportunity for Epson and its partners.”
According to Epson, dye-sublimation and direct-to-garment technologies enable limitless design possibilities across the textile and fashion industry allowing entrepreneurs and established fashion brands to print on a variety of fabrics in real-time, including cotton and synthetic fibers, for a new level of creative freedom. The end result is original prints of the highest quality unique to each designer on fabrics that can define and convey their signature style. “For the second year in a row, the Epson Digital Couture event showcased how today’s fashion designers are leveraging innovative printing technologies to bring their creative visions to life,” said Agustin Chacon, Epson America’s vice president of international marketing. “Epson’s digital textile printing technologies provide fashion designers with the flexibility to produce ultra-creative designs.” “It was great to see that so many people were truly interested in the designers’ work, asking about what inspired them and how they liked working with the Epson printer for the project,” Catalina explained. “And to hear the designers talk about how they saw their vision come to life because they used the technology and being able to differentiate themselves from the competition because they can create their own fabrics—that told me we were successful.”
Scheduled two years from now at Fiera Milano, Print4All will debut on May 29–June 1 2018, together with Ipack Ima, Plast, Meat Tech and Intralogistica Italia. of the highest performance digital printing offerings in our industry,” said Jason Oliver, head of the digital division at Heidelberg. The Heidelberg digital printing offering will therefore have the following structure: Heidelberg Primefire 106: The new digital inkjet printing system for the industrial production of digital and innovative printing applications in the B1 format. Heidelberg Versafire CP/CV is the new name for the existing Linoprint CP/CV digital printing systems. The Heidelberg Versafire is an all-round system for the economic production of short and personalized runs in combination with a large choice of substrates. Heidelberg launched the system in cooperation with its partner Ricoh in 2011. Gallus Labelfire 340 is the new product name for the former Gallus DCS 340 for the growth market of digital label printing. The machine
is distributed by Gallus, the Swiss subsidiary of Heidelberg. Heidelberg Omnifire 250/1000 is the new name for Heidelberg’s 4D printing systems, replacing the former name Heidelberg Jetmaster Dimension 250/1000. Heidelberg uses the term 4D printing to describe the personalized and flexible printing on various threedimensional objects such as balls, drinking bottles, and other massproduced items, especially from the consumer goods industry. In addition, Heidelberg is working on the development of systems also suitable for industrial applications, for example in the automotive industry. The launch of the Heidelberg Omnifire 1000 is planned for the end of 2016. The entire digital printing portfolio can be integrated into the overall workflow of a print shop together with the Heidelberg offset systems via the new Prinect Digital Front

According to Heidelberg, the Smart Print Shop is now a reality, with a solution where users can largely automate their offset and digital printing processes as well as manage them in a uniform and transparent way.
World premiere of the Heidelberg Primefire 106 at drupa A strategic partnership formed between Fujifilm and Heidelberg in late 2013 for the development of a new industrial digital inkjetprinting machine has resulted in the B1 format Heidelberg Primefire 106. “In record time, Fujifilm and Heidelberg have jointly developed the world’s first B1 truly industrial inkjet digital printing press,” said Gerold Linzbach, CEO of Heidelberg. “Our original partnership was based on a joint evaluation of Fujifilm’s core inkjet technology, and after two years of co-development, we remain convinced Fujifilm is the best partner. Thanks to our close cooperation, we can now present the new digital printing system on our drupa booth, fully integrated into our ‘Smart Print Shop’ demonstrations.” “Thanks to our strategic partnership with Heidelberg, the major provider and partner for the global printing industry, we are now
confident that we can meet the expanding needs of the industrial packaging market,” said Shigetaka Komori, chairman and chief executive officer of Fujifilm Corporation. “The new B1 machine enhances the range and application of Fujifilm inkjet technology from our proven Jet Press 720 series in the B2 space. Fujifilm will continue to innovate and deliver value to the growing digital printing industry by expanding our core inkjet technologies which is the cornerstone of this new B1 machine.” The new print engine design will incorporate Samba state-of-theart MEMS printhead technology from Fujifilm Dimatix Inc. Fujifilm’s water-based pigment ink with Rapic technology for high-definition imaging will meet food packaging safety regulations. Fujifilm’s inkjet technology will work together with Heidelberg’s world-class developments in press manufacturing and system integration capabilities to achieve quality output comparable to offset with superior consistency and reliability. The new machine will be driven by the Heidelberg Prinect Digital Front End (DFE) to optimize workflow and quality. The system design will enable printers to develop new applications from a fully digital-based system for customization, variable data printing, and targeted marketing applications. Fujifilm’s newly developed 7-color inks (CMYK, orange, green, and violet) and Heidelberg’s varnish will improve the range of
digital applications through a wide color space and accessibility to various commercial substrates. “With the world premiere of the Heidelberg Primefire 106 we have reached another milestone in our digital strategy: achieving success in working with partners to bring systems to the market within the shortest time. This will help our customers to address the increased market challenges in a digitized world in the future also. Now we are the first provider to enable the industrial and integrated production of digital printed products in the Smart Print Shop. At the same time, in doing so we are also opening up opportunities for the future growth of Heidelberg”, said Stephan Plenz, member of the management board and responsible for Heidelberg Equipment, during an advance presentation of the new system. Heidelberg will showcase the machine and the end-to-end benefits of the new configuration during the upcoming drupa exhibition. As a strategic partner, Fujifilm will exhibit their wide range of OEM capabilities with various inkjet products, including the Samba printhead with unique and highly sophisticated ink recirculation design, driving differentiation of the world-class innovative printing device. Commercialization for the new platform is planned in the latter part of 2017. The first machine installation for field-testing is planned after the drupa exhibition.

As of drupa 2016, Heidelberg will be repeating its approach with the Speedmaster series by presenting its entire digital printing offering under a standardized family name, the “Fire” product line. While the Speedmaster range predominantly stands for maintaining the competitiveness of a print shop’s core business (operational excellence), the digital printing portfolio is aimed at particularly innovative business models and pioneering printing applications (business innovation). With this rename, Heidelberg intends to increase both the clarity of the entire offering and the recognition value of the brand for customers. “The name “Fire” for our digital printing portfolio stands for performance, dynamism and growth – and also for digitally “transmitting” data and ink onto different surfaces. there is a steady increase in the volume and value of digital print, with the exception of packaging where only 13% reported that it represents more than 25% of turnover, compared to 35% for commercial, 24% for publishing and 59% for functional. The ability of digital to print variable content is important, with 59% of functional printers and 35% of commercial printers reporting that more than 25% of their digital turnover was variable. Web to print seems to have stalled, with only a percentage point of growth from 2014 (25% of printers had it) to 2015 (26%). Only North America as a region and functional print as a sector saw significant increases in volumes going through web to print.

The results of the 3rd drupa Global Trends report have been published. The report finds that although recovery from the financial crisis in 2008 is incomplete and uneven, printers everywhere are increasingly optimistic about their prospects throughout 2016, despite tightening margins and falling prices. This is influencing their plans for investment in production equipment. The three reports have drawn on a global panel of about 750 printers to survey the state of the printing industry and expectations about its future over the three years leading up to drupa 2016. Sabine Geldermann, director drupa, Messe Düsseldorf, says: “This year’s drupa is a showcase for the latest developments in the global
printing industry. By commissioning the series of drupa Global Trends reports, we are able to put these new developments into the context of the state of the industry as a whole. Anyone visiting drupa this year will find the reports make an invaluable backgrounder.” The research and writing of the reports were handled by Richard Gray and Neil Falconer of the specialist consultancy and market research company Print Future. “The previous report in 2015 was upbeat in general, globally,” says Richard Gray. “In 2016 the picture is patchier, with some regions thriving, such as North America, others are struggling, including some of the developing regions.
Similarly whilst packaging and functional markets are in general doing well, those in the commercial market are more challenged and those in the publishing market particularly so." In each report the responses of printers have been gathered and averaged to produce a barometer of economic confidence. Some 37% of the global panel of printers described their current condition in 2015 as good, although a significant 12% said their condition was poor, giving a positive net balance of 25%. Looking ahead, printers were in general more positive with 50% expecting their economic condition to improve in 2016 compared with just 6%
Limits to growth expecting it to deteriorate – a positive balance of 44%. Taken by region, everywhere is more optimistic for 2016 than 2015, but the biggest increases in positive feelings are in Africa, Australia/Oceania, Middle East and Asia. Taken by sector, all the 2016 forecasts are more optimistic on balance, with commercial and functional (sometimes called industrial) printing showing the greatest increase compared to 2015.
also doing very well in packaging (+18%), and gravure is also seeing a modest but definite growth (+3%) in this sector. Functional printing is a growth area for screen printing (+11%), though digital is very important here too. While the bulk of turnover still comes from conventional print,
Both printers and suppliers cited strong competition as the biggest constraint to growth, with lack of sales being almost as large a factor. When asked the reason, the largest factor (58%) was finding new customers, with finding good sales staff second at 35%. About 32% blamed lack of demand for conventional print, but only 10% said the same for digital.
Digital prospects
Looking at some 14 common print processes, the report found that, as might be expected, digital technologies are growing fastest (on average by 28% per annum), but that sheet fed offset lithography is also seeing significant growth, particularly in publishing (net positive growth of 7%) and packaging (+12%). Three quarters of the Western European workforce will be mobile by 2018 and require the ability to access and process information quickly and securely in order to maintain and increase productivity, according to a new whitepaper from the analysts IDC and commissioned by OKI Europe.
In addressing this changing environment, the IDC whitepaper titled ‘Are your business processes stifling your market opportunity? Cost-efficient print and document management through smart MFPs’ states that smart multifunction printers (smart MFPs) need to provide the option to digitise documents while
safeguarding sensitive company data against any threats or viruses by providing secure printing from mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. One of the biggest evolutions in modern business is the rapid change to how and where people work, with bring-your-owndevice (BYOD) and cloud technol-
to use their own personal smartphones, laptops and tablets. When IDC asked SMBs about their opinions on business process efficiency, a high number agreed that they needed to improve their processes, with employee mobility being a strong driver in support of digitised processes. A 2014 study released by Atomik Research on behalf of OKI Europe has also pointed to a significant increase in the use of smart devices and flexible working among European SMBs. This research found that nearly half of the businesses surveyed (45%) had staff with a requirement to print from a mobile device.
Moving towards anywhere, anytime flexibility
Smart MFPs – the key to safeguarding business data
In order to manage the continued increase in mobility, the whitepaper confirms that organisations need to have control over how people work from their own personal BYOD and business mobiles. They must protect a company’s intellectual property while still allowing employees ‘anytime and anywhere’ access to maintain efficient working practices through the use of mobile print applications and configured data access. Devices such as smartphones and tablets are an increasingly popular way for employees to access business information, with IDC research showing that overall shipments for tablets reached an all-time high of 76.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2014. As well as offering secure printing, smart MFPs therefore need to offer the functionality to enable small business users to print seamlessly from all types of modern devices. In 2013, an IDC European usage study on print services market trends found that a third of companies allowed their employees
While today, most businesses continue to use a combination of paper-based and digital documents in their day-to-day operations, research by IDC shows a third of European companies are now planning for a digital world. As this shift continues, smart multifunction printers (MFPs) can play an important role in helping firms move away from paperbased processes towards more collaborative, digitised processes. As demand for productivity tools that meet the needs of the modern worker continues to rise, smart MFPs look set to move centre stage as a workplace technology. Acting as ‘on ramps and off ramps to the cloud’, IDC makes the case that they are no longer simply a printing and copying facility (or ‘dumb device’), but have now transcended to become a customisable digital transformation tool. With access to scanning functionality, SMB users can digitise information for searchable access and scan direct to a specific destination, eliminating the need for a
paper trail. The ability to scan direct to email, or a specified network or cloudbased folder for further use or archiving purposes also makes the devices well-suited to the 66% of European companies which say the ability to have archived documents in a single location is a key benefit of automating business processes. Meanwhile, functions such as secure ID cards and secure PIN controls take away the security concerns raised by ‘anywhere and anytime’ access to information, giving peace of mind to SMB businesses that sensitive company and customer data is protected and handled in accordance with best-practice industry regulations. The fact that smart MFPs respond to SMBs’ need for secure solutions and are equipped to meet productivity challenges makes them an intelligent choice for European SMBs navigating the changing demands of the modern workplace. Confirming the role of smart MFPs in the modern business workplace, the whitepaper points out smart MFPs extend the utilisation of the device to a customisable digital transformation tool. They can act as a platform for growth by providing cost and time-efficient workflow solutions aligned with and in support of companies’ business objectives, such as improving compliance and security while supporting mobility and costcutting initiatives.” Terry Kawashima, managing director, OKI Europe, says: “BYOD has changed from being a business trend to business reality. The fact that smart MFPs can be configured to streamline workflow and simplify document distribution and management makes them an important asset in the management of BYOD and workforce mobility.”

ogy paving the way for remote and flexible working structures. Increasingly, many small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are also benefiting from affordable access to sophisticated technology. However, in bringing about changing behaviour and workplace, the new digital era for business presents a number of pressure points for the modern SMB. In particular, a mobile workforce needs anytime, anywhere access to information to maintain and increase productivity. At the same time, SMBs are under pressure to do more with the same or fewer resources.

Transition from offset to digital printing set to accelerate In 2020, digital will be 17.4% of value and 3.4% of all print and printed packaging volume
20
In 2015 digital print accounted for 13.9% of all print and printed packaging in value terms, but just 2.5% of the volume. This has grown from 9.4% of the value and 1.9% of the volume in 2010. According to a new report from Smithers Pira, the offset to digital transition is accelerating: in 2020 digital will be 17.4% of value and 3.4% of all print and printed packaging volume. According to report ‘The Future of Digital vs Offset Printing to 2020’, digital is growing because it can offer advantages that analogue
print cannot provide. As colour digital presses came to market the initial drivers were for low cost, short runs and quick turnaround. As more companies used the technology, new applications and business models developed for print-on-demand and shortrun books. There is increasing demand for photobooks and photo products, where digital print linked to online ordering has enabled a multi-billion dollar market to flourish. The penetration of digital varies across particular market sectors.
to develop for analogue processes, but the major developments are taking place in digital printing – and particularly inkjet, which is enjoying major investments in R&D on heads, inks, and printing systems. There are also significant developments in enabling workflow technology – for all processes – and in substrates, with much emphasis on paper to improve the quality of water-based inkjet printing. The developments are changing the relative cost positions of digital and analogue printing. Generally the economic crossover point is getting higher and this will fuel further adoption of digital technology, at the expense of the established litho, flexo and gravure alternatives. Smithers Pira has developed a costing model that compares digital and offset printing. This builds up the real production costs including capital cost, depreciation period, maintenance, shift pattern, labour rates, energy, make-ready time, plate costs, setup and running waste, print speed and press utilisation, and paper and ink or click cost at variable coverages. The final product can be varied and the model calculates the comparative cost as run lengths change, to show the economic crossover where one process becomes cheaper than another. As technology and prices change, this model is a useful tool for companies to select the most appropriate technology for their particular markets. It is also useful for equipment suppliers to
determine how their technology fits in to the supply market. Digital print can mimic the output of analogue, generally at lower run lengths; but the economic crossover continues to rise, and should get a hike upward at drupa 2016. Using digital just to mimic offset or flexo print is not the best use of the technology, though. There are companies producing very high-quality, innovative products with variable content that buyers value. Having both digital and analogue solutions means a company can offer the most appropriate solution to the customer. One successful medium-size print company explained that its litho capacity produced a lot of the volume for a particular customer in a very competitive, cost-conscious market. It was the innovative digital solutions they provided that differentiated the company to become a valued supplier, rather than one competing on price. The digital work at high margins meant that overall the account was very profitable. Digital printing will continue to grow in most print sectors across the world. Mono webfed electrophotography is being superseded by full-colour inkjet; but despite this drop, the volume and value of electrophotography will continue to rise as colour applications grow. Innovative users will find more applications and niches to exploit the advantages of digital – some at the expense of offset printing, but also by opening totally new opportunities.

Digital print penetration into the global print market by application 2010–20 ($, constant values and volume in A4 prints)
Advertising print and graphics have a higher proportion of digital print in the overall mix than for packaging and publishing where books are taking off and there is some newspaper inkjet printing. The varying take up is summarised in Figure 1 below. ¬ The adoption of digital is not just cost-based. While sheetfed litho shows stable pricing, there are significant drops for litho web, gravure and inkjet printing. Flexo pricing will rise as packaging products account for a larger share of the market and shorter runs are pushing the average upward. Sheetfed litho has real productivity gains from new equipment, but the long life and active secondhand market for presses means there are many very old machines on the market. The changing product mix, with a greater proportion of more expensive packaging, evens the overall price development. Web offset litho pricing is falling, partly due to improvements from modern presses and use of lean manufacturing,
but more through the impacts of competition to chase the remaining market as volumes fall. The overall impact is a slight increase in the average price of all print between 2010 and 2020, through the adoption of more valuable digital printing and a change in the work mix to more highly priced products. The unit cost of packaging is much higher than for newspapers, where many publishers supply the paper which does not contribute to the print value figures. Digital print can incorporate variability that makes it more effective than the static alternative. Users of digital print are innovating with applications and exploring new ways to offer novel functions and features to print buyers that are valued and sell at a premium. Smithers Pira ran a market research programme in June-July 2015 to determine the status and to identify the key drivers and barriers to the adoption of digital printing. The continuing increase in shorter run lengths was identified as the most important issue; with the improvements in technology ranked second, equal with the low setup costs; while environmental benefits scored lowest. In terms of barriers to the adoption of digital printing, the cost of individual jobs scored most highly, followed by general issues of print quality and the cost of machinery. The respondents are still seeing potential problems on certain stocks and jobs that are hampering adoption in some quarters. Printing technology is continuing

Digital printing applications more accessible than ever An increasing number of organisations in the Middle East are opting for in-house printing rather than outsourcing it to third parties
22
The printing industry in the Middle East is moving away from traditional offset style of printing and embracing the new digital style more aggressively. Furthermore, the UAE is on par or ahead of Europe with regard to large format printing applications. These trends and views were shared by industry experts at a media roundtable hosted recently by Canon Middle East focusing on the ‘Rising Trends of Large Format Printing (LFP) in the Middle East’ and aimed to reveal the way forward for the industry in 2016. Shadi Bakhour, general manager

A huge demand we see from our customers is to have shorter print runs, as it is cost-effective and fast (500-1000 copies in a couple of minutes) which has been made possible by digital,” says Ayman. Yasser El Farra, managing director of Tenaui Middle East Trading, which has been a distributor of Canon Middle East technology and services for two years now, feels there is more growth here in the UAE as compared to Europe. “There are many solutions you can explore with LFP. Many of our customers restrict themselves to only printing and selling, but
you can do so much more. For instance, the arts market which is increasingly growing regionally and globally. Artistic paintings and photographs are everywhere around us, in our houses, offices, and outdoors. Customers can use LFP technologies to take advantage of this trend. Also, other industries such as events and advertising can use LFP to revolutionise their markets and achieve higher profitability,” says Yasser. “The UAE is on par or ahead of Europe with regard to LFP applications. In Europe, some countries have reached a saturation point because of which business growth is declining, whereas in the UAE, there are new areas to explore which is helping us grow. Leaving aside the ‘Big 5’ countries of Europe, we are doing very well as compared to other parts, especially against the Eastern countries,” says Ayman.
Bringing digital printing in-house Canon highlights the rising trend of in-house printing and considers this to be the way forward for the industry. The advantages of having an in-house LFP solution include quick turnaround time to finish projects, lower costs and workload. However, a decision to print in-house depends on sev-

printing photos myself and need not liaise and co-ordinate with a supplier. Sometimes, suppliers do not understand your vision, and that where an in-house printing solution becomes of great help,” says Wouter. Yasser points out the only barrier to further adoption of LFP applications in the region is the lack of awareness on the part of the consumer. “One of the biggest issues that need to be addressed is the lack of understanding of printing media by end-users. The first question end-users ask is how much the printing media will cost when ideally they should be asking about the features of the print media they are buying and how they align with their business objectives. This approach needs to be changed and it can be done only through education,” says Yasser. Shadi indicates that educating customers and end-users is the new focus of Canon moving forward. “More than simply selling technology and products, we believe that we need to sell the business value such technologies bring to a company. This is a huge shift for Canon as a business strategy as we are approaching customers not only with the proposition of having the best products, but also how those products can help them reduce costs, improve quality, and create lean business processes,” says Shadi.

of Canon Emirates, observes that factors such as faster turn-around times, qualitative print runs and more effective control and security of the printing architecture are enabling businesses to move to digital. According to him, this is not a new direction, but is more of a natural evolution. “The requirements and needs of those businesses which heavily rely on printing are evolving. There is higher demand for variable data printing, customization and personalization; businesses are experimenting with a variety of printing media following customer demands which is therefore causing them to consider digital printing for the various advantages it offers,” says Shadi. Ayman Ali, marketing manager, Canon Middle East, concurs that the availability of different types of technologies such as tonerbased and ink-based printers has helped shaped this trend. “The cost for digital printing has dropped dramatically. Five years ago, the quality difference was huge between offset and digital, but now this gap has reduced greatly. In terms of print quality, colour management and customisation, digital provides you with HD-type of clean photo prints; so digital is dominating in that way.

eral factors, according to Shadi. “There is increasing awareness among customers, but there is still a lot of education that needs to be provided. Usually we notice that customers understand product features, but they don’t know enough about solutions. Printing solutions could be offered in-house or outsourced, but that decision depends on the requirements of the client and on factors such as turnaround time, sensitivity of the application, and security of the place. As a solutions provider, Canon helps its customers consider all these variables and help them decide whether to go in-house or get their printing outsourced," explains Shadi. Wouter Kingma, an independent photographer and Canon customer, has been using LFP machines creatively in-house to produce photographs, cards, and coffee table books. “Photography is core to my business. I do coffee table books; manage an online webstore as well as a blog. The obvious thing for me to do with my large format printer would be to print photos and that’s what we offer on the webstore. However, there’s so much more we can do with LFP. For instance, we use LFP to print simple thank you cards for our clients after the completion of our projects. Another example is coffee table books, which we usually give for offset printing; but using LFP, we can print them in-house and give it away to potential clients. LFP solutions can therefore be used to produce a lot of such marketing collateral and it is highly cost-effective for our company,” says Wouter. According to Wouter, having an LFP solution in-house assures that he gets prints turned around quickly, and saves him money on outsourcing printing to a third party supplier and hiring more people to do the tasks. “Being an artist myself, I know how my print should look in a frame. Having a LFP printer in-house means I can manage

Investment initiative and education will drive the digital adoption Masar Printing and Publishing is influencing customers to relook at the applications of digital printing

Digital printing is not a matter of choice anymore for print service providers, and investment in digital printing need not necessarily happen only when a traditional printing business runs out of options to grow. Considering that digital printing has overcome its previous limitations in productivity, quality, and attractive pricing, it should be a priority on every traditional printer’s agenda, and the focus should shift toward educating the customer about its benefits and applications, according to Samer Sabri Abdel Qader, COO, Masar Printing and Publishing. “As there’s no doubt about the vast possibilities of digital printing and the opportunities for new revenue streams, it’s up to the print service provider to educate clients about how they can take advantage of these opportunities by integrating them into their marketing plans. How can your customers know all of this if you’ve not either communicated it to them or demonstrated it to
“For publishers, digital printing can offer the same quality of offset printing at comparable prices. Consider how the newspaper printing is set to accept this trend. Local publishers are looking at personalized, short run digital printing based on individual markets. “Content drives everything in the publishing industry, and personalized content is the future of this highly competitive industry. Readers will value the opportunity to select their topics of interest and a personalized newspaper with those topics delivered to their door every day,” says Samer. According to Samer, one of the biggest opportunities yet relatively untapped is variable data printing. Marketers in the Middle East region are yet to be fully educated about how variable data printing can boost the response rates and ROI of their campaigns though personalized messages targeted at different customer segments. “Globally, offset printer manufacturers are aligning their business models to integrate digital printing. To encourage this trend, printer manufacturers could offer printers and inks at lower costs. I believe such a step from manufacturers would revolutionize the industry and accelerate the adoption of digital printing. Masar will continue to invest in digital printing, aimed at market leadership and an initiative to push boundaries and inspire our customers to do the same,” says Samer.
“It is important to offer new, creative solutions for marketers to reach their consumers” Gift giving is an old tradition, and along with evolution of consumer preferences, gifting has matured into a thriving business. However, as times change, gifts need to match the expectations of consumers, and accordingly, suppliers have to keep themselves updated about consumer preferences and introduce new products and services constantly. Growth in the business of promotional printed products depends entirely on keeping your finger on the pulse of consumer trends, according to Sina Haghi, general manager of UAE-based Magic Trading Company (MTC), which has been in the promotional gifts printing and supply business for over 25 years. “Traditionally, the gifting business used to be seasonal and we depended heavily on festivals for orders, but today promotional gifts and giveaways are part of any gathering or event, irrespective of whether it’s a product launch, trade show, or celebration, because of their brand recall value. Companies have realized the impact of promotional gifts on branding. In several cases, this form of advertising can be more effective than outdoor advertising. Consumers who see the name and contact details of a brand on an item they like to use or carry with them every day are more likely to have higher brand loyalty,” says Sina. With regard to the promotional merchandise, Sina believes it is important to offer new, creative solutions for marketers to reach their consumers, rather than repeat the same campaign and merchandise offered by several
other competitors in a market. “It’s encouraging for us that the number of events of every kind is increasing the UAE. On the flip side, promotional merchandise bears the brunt of marketing budget cuts when there’s a downturn in the market. However, marketers and advertisers want what consumers want. Consider the impact of technology: as technology is increasingly becoming an integral part of our lives, people prefer tech gifts such as USB flash drives, power banks, speakers, and other IT devices and mobile accessories. We recommend gift items that are useful to consumers as well as serve as a powerful marketing platform,” explains Sina. Sina points out that any printer today can enter the promotional merchandise business, because the cost of entry is low and the returns are high. According to him, it is easy to include promotional printing to a commercial printer’s portfolio, because it complements all the other printed marketing collateral. “I’ve observed that promotional item printing is attractive to new entrepreneurs, who are not necessarily traditional printers, but looking to start small and grow steadily. Advertising agencies may choose to print their merchandise in-house, but they’d rather focus on their specialty and let us take care of the sourcing and printing of the items,” says Sina. Magic Trading Company supplies machines and material for promotional merchandise printing as well as offers the printing service itself, establishing itself as
a one-stop-shop for everything in promotional gifts and branding. The supply of promotional items makes up the largest share of MTC’s business; the company imports items, stocks them, and supplies them either as printed or non-printed merchandise. “We may create competition for ourselves in the market, but if we don’t offer everything from machines to merchandise, somebody else will. I believe there’s enough work in the market for everybody to thrive. Promotional merchandise supply remains our biggest business, and it drives repeat business. We have a large catalogue of promotional merchandise of all kinds sourced from all over the world. Because we stock items in the UAE, customers who wish to buy small and large quantities prefer to buy from us to save time and money instead of importing directly,” says Sina. The promotional gift business can expand with the variety to items offered and the creativity in communicating a message using them to consumers, according to Sina. MTC is working on offering innovative packaging to add value to its range of merchandise. “Often, the value of gift packaging often surpasses that of the gift itself. Packaging options, too, comes at different prices for various budgets. As long as we have unique, useful, and interesting products to impress consumers, we believe our business can keep growing. We enjoy tackling a different challenge every day when customers walk in with a request to print on a new item we haven’t done before,” says Sina.

them?” opines Samer. Masar Printing and Publishing took the initiative to lead the digital printing market by becoming the first in the EMEA region to install the Kodak Prosper 6000C press, among several other digital presses, aimed at offering readercustomized newspapers and advanced printing services. “We have always been upbeat about the potential of digital printing, and approached the market with confidence, not because we had enough digital printing orders initially, but our understanding of consumer behaviour and how digital printing was positioned to satisfy certain unique demands. Because we marketed the benefits and ROI of digital printing, we have been able to acquire customers by offering the added value proposition of new applications, personalization, and variable data printing, explains Samer. As a business expansion and diversification strategy, digital printing offers a strong growth path for Masar’s future, points out Samer. He concurs that as demand for conventional printing and print runs reduce in the price sensitive Middle East market, digital printing stands to benefit the most by offering a flexible and profitable alternative. Publishers are becoming environmentally conscious and they are printing just the quantities they need on demand at competitive prices as opposed to the earlier trend of printing large runs and maintaining unnecessary inventory.

Considering people are key to your operation, it is prudent to recognise they also need to be developed and assisted to understand the change, especially considering they make up a large percentage of your costs. Your ability to work with your team is paramount is the survival of your business. • We have always done it this way – old habits die hard; your challenge is to develop those who want change. • People resist losing control – many can work between being in control and following the pack; review your team. • What’s in it for me? WIITFM – understand the process of change relative to the people involved and take time to educate the benefits and features for them. • Exhaustion – businesses that continually change without balance often leave the team behind or just wear them out. • Insecurity – stress often results from the unknown – keep your team informed appropriately. • Reduction in power or loss or prestige – many fear change will reduce their skills, leave them feeling silly or inadequate or lower their self-esteem.

Over the last three decades, we have seen a rate of change that I would like to propose is at least a 3000 percent increase from the starting point in signage, including wide format, while in small format print, it’s many times more! Let’s look at the game changers over the last few decades:
3. Market areas – which sector can deliver profit and growth to your business?
I suggest it’s safe to say many existing business models are under threat – that is an accepted fact. Your accrued business knowledge has witnessed many changes, increased business collapses, people struggling with what they once produce and assess-

2. Equipment – output increases that will take your breath away
• Sign writing to vinyl lettering - Sign manufacturing for decades was performed using traditional techniques. From the early 80’s, we observed traditional hand sign-making skills that would normally take 1 1/2 hours for say 1m2 of normal lettering reduce to around 10 minutes. That is a change – an increase in output of 900%. • Vinyl letters to digital print – In the late 90s, we witnessed the development of wide format digital printing equipment, initially with an output of approximately 1m2 per hour and rapidly increase to around 80 m² per hour for what are now termed commercial low volume printers, just like most small sign shops. Double that for mid-range to highvolume printers – let’s just say it’s a 200% increase. • Offset print to small format print – Even a casual observer has to conclude this area has been in parallel to the revolution that has taken place in sign and wide format. The operators have been immersed in introducing totally new technologies. It’s fair to say most of those who have embraced change are the market leaders. While those who haven’t are languishing, merging, gone out of business or still have a niche market for them to survive. Yes, it’s obvious the technologies have merged the print industry and the sign industry. • What next – hang on to your hat: I put to you it is not just about vinyl letters or wide format digitally printed signs at a per m2 rate as if you peek wider afield – with emerging printer head technologies like waterfall or other patented technologies its highly likely to break through the 500m2 -to 1000+ m2 rate over the next few years. You can rest assured the many heavyweight international and local equipment suppliers will continue to dazzle us with further leaps forward in speed and quality – but what about other applications? Trust me, they are already on the drawing board or in prototype. Ok, now we have a new ever merging industry dubbed “the Print, Sign and Graphic industry” I suggest it is not the end point but the acknowledgement of the start of a new beginning. – Are you ready? You can console and justify yourself with this comment – Well, you made it so far, so forearmed is the very start of enjoying the road ahead.

1. Is your business ready to find new markets and develop customers in this brave new world? 2. If your business model is a proven and tested ask yourself: “will my methods work for 2020 – that's only five years away? “ Refer below to a recent USA survey by SGIAA. There is much you can take home from these figures – however for me the standout is the continuance of a 10% swing to entirely digital – therefore what is the next phase of digital? That is The Big Question! Therefore your challenge is to understand the growing markets and capitalize on them. The full evolution of disruptive technology is increasing it
hold more rapidly. Therefore your challenge is – which of the rapidity evolving markets in digital technology are for you and your clients? • 3D or additive printing – imagine a wide format 3D printer printing out an illuminated sign cabinet, showcase or sign. I was at a customer premise last week and they needed a bracket to wall hang a sign – Yes, they 3D printed it! • Soft signage – This has been evolving and the future is unlimited. • Digital advertising – Sure, it’s been around for a while, however, largely at the top end of town. • Emerging digital printer trends – The ‘sign and graphics markets’ are a fraction of areas like the décor market place or packaging. My glimpse into the future – the market needs agile, innovative and market focused entrepreneurs who will immerse themselves in the client’s problem and become their ultimate graphic solutions provider.
Yes, I will show a bias in this simple statement –“If you are not using computer software to develop your quotes, manage your job sheets, balance your production, integrate your marketing, produce your accounts and virtually every area of your work flow – why not? Simply put, if you can find a job for a banner in seconds, with the artwork linked and customer, well, you are burning money. Likewise, compliance in all western countries is the new conundrum people in the sign and print business have pretended to ignore. Let me offer you a reality check – in light of recent Work, Health, and Safety (WHS) prosecutions in Melbourne and other high profile sign business being fined a large sum of money, its time to understand this high profile case will impact on you directly. The simple reality is this case, with fines around $250,000, will more than likely lead to criminal charges and potentially prison time. Ignorance is not an excuse. WHS has been around for decades, and you need to act comprehensively – right now. There are simple, effective methods to deliver compliance across the broader areas of your business. You need to become a part of the solution and see this very clearly. WHS systems are not a burden they are the law; therefore, isn’t it the most intelligent option is to integrate WHS just like your business management software into a daily routine and see it as a productivity tool. If you think that you can continue to avoid compliance, and you can offer a million reasons why, then more than likely you are acknowledging you are breaking the law.
5. Where in your future plans are pathways that develop the real benefits for you, your business and your clients
Perhaps the key to the entire article, and if I may be so bold, is your future business? Once again, I challenge you to consider this simple statement – “the business which has the best relationship with the customer will triumph.” This area is all about you understanding and listening to your customer’s needs. Well, you say that's nothing new, and yes I agree. However, in the coming years, we will see massive changes in technologies, speed of production, and increase in range of opportunities. Are these for you, or will you let them slide by? I offer just a few glimpses into the range of choices you need to make. These are just a few: • Have a clear vision for the business output you will
make, as without this you won’t know what kind of services and products to identify and develop for your customers. • Decide what you want out of your business, define your products and requirements. Then, develop your customer base around that vision. • What role does your business play in adding value to your customers business? • Is your business just a supplier or should your forge a logistics partnership – your products, services and quality actually become part of your customer’s vital lifeline? • Perhaps your future lies in ecommerce – you offer personalised e-ordering whereby the ordering portal you have developed once again is a part of your customer’s vital lifeline? • Define the potential to increase the economic value of the business, and decide whether you need to pull or push, by way of a simple explanation: a customer wants to buy a product (pull), and your business (push) will satisfy the customer’s needs. Is this a sustainable model for the future for you? Or should your pull? • Define any potential barriers which could arise to hinder a successful outcome – make a list • Do you have any fears and/or doubts? Make a list • Is there a transition phase, to change your marketing direction? Put plans in place for managing the marketing and sales process; create policies that build trust, respect and connection to the right people within your customers business. The smart and easy path is to bring in an expert! Why? One of the most emotionally charged business environments you will ever find yourself in is being unstoppable and committed to reinvent a process you are comfortable with.

Expert talk Digital Printing
Digital press profits vs traditional offset Are you still wondering whether digital printing is right for you, and what the ROI truly is? Or, at what run length should you put a job on an offset press vs. a digital press? By: Jim Aust, print industry consultant and business analyst
a common “unit.” We consider a page as one 8.5”x11”, one side. The printer will almost always print the other side, but that counts as another page. Consider the average sell rate for traditional offset in the commercial print industry to be 6 to 10 cents per page, with a modest profit of 2% to 4%. Short runs should sell for more than 10 cents per page, and long runs can sell for less than 6 cents per page. The digital side of the business has a different set of numbers. The average total cost per page is somewhere around 20 to 22 cents as an average for small to mid-size digital operations, but high volume printers might get it down to 10 to 14 cents a page. Run lengths don’t have as much of an impact on cost on a digital press as on a traditional offset press. If you are an offset printer and confronted with those numbers, you might be tempted to stay away from digital. However, the general economics and profit levels for digital print are very healthy. Digital really does pay for itself with a relatively small amount of printing, at least when compared to offset. Further, digital profits can often contribute more to the economic health of the company than offset does.
30
In analyzing a printer’s costs in a mixed work center environment (offset, digital, mailing/fulfillment), it’s generally necessary to go right down to the income statement level. I have learned that the vast majority of digital press users are extremely successful economically, even though it’s not always apparent to them because of the way their financial
reporting is organized. We work with executive management to split their business into multiple P&Ls (one for each major work center) and generate a one-time snapshot of offset, digital, mailing, etc. That exercise takes several hours, but when we are done we find that the digital press, on average, is generating 20-25% net profit, while offset
is at 1-3%. I find this time and time again. The typical reaction is dismay. But they ultimately agree that the analysis is correct, in large part because their executive team and I did the analysis together. Printers typically don’t think in terms of page counts, but I do because I work between the offset and digital worlds, and I need
Certainly, run lengths matter. The average run length for a sheetfed run in a commercial printer is between 5000 and 10,000 impressions. Runs can be as short as 500 impressions, or over 50,000 impressions. As mentioned earlier, the sell rate of the average job might be in the 6 to 10 cent per page range, but the long- to shortrun sell range would be 4 to 40 cents per page range. While the run length for offset will certainly affect the sell rate per
Why is digital printing growing in a down economy? With the drop off in offset printing in a down economy, digital printing has been growing. As marketing looks to increase their return on investment and spend less money, they look to personalized marketing, and thus, digital printing. This may accelerate the change to digital print as marketing sees the higher return on investment that personalization provides because more marketing companies are adopting personalization as they are forced to do with shrinking budgets. Certainly one of the reasons for the growth in digital printing is the profit of digital (20-40%) vs offset (1-4%). But other reasons for the growth in digital are more basic and linked to the changes within the print industry in general. Run lengths for offset are getting shorter. Ten years ago, the
average sheetfed run length in a commercial print operation was over 10,000 impressions. Today, the average run is under 10,000 impressions, and approx 30% less than 5 years ago, if not shorter. As a result, a larger percentage of print runs are less than 1500 impressions. A 1000 impression run might take only 10-15 minutes on press to run, and the make-ready can take over 30 minutes. This leads to an expensive run and cost per page. What happens when you do a 1000 impression offset run? You can’t sell that for 9 cents a page and make a profit. As you get in the 500 to 1000 impression range on a typical offset press, the true cost of those jobs runs between 35-45 cents a page. At that point, digital becomes very attractive. You can take a short run that is costing you 40 cents a page and move it to digital, which cuts the cost in half. These economics are driving more work to digital, especially since new digital presses are generating offset-class quality. Further, industry leaders have long recognized that having a digital press (especially with web portals, mailing, and fulfillment) gives them the flexibility of producing the job on whatever press makes sense and at peak efficiency, and this configuration makes them more attractive to their customer base. They are viewed as a full service provider. The true industry leaders are leveraging their production assets into positioning themselves as a marketing services provider to their customers rather than a print services provider. Another reason digital print is growing is variable data printing. Not only are offset print runs getting shorter, but marketing managers are looking for ways to maximize the impact of their message. Targeted and personalized messaging is growing.

The impact of run length
page, the profit margin is small for most printers. With a digital press, the run length will not have as much of an impact on job pricing. Even a short-run digital job will carry the same administrative costs as a long-run job, but press costs are more consistent, since make-ready time and materials are insignificant. Plus, any digital jobs that are submitted through a web portal or storefront, significantly reduce the front office and prepress costs. The result is more consistent per-page pricing that does not move as much as offset jobs will due to run length. Further, with offset run lengths continuing to shrink, more jobs will migrate to digital. The demand for digital will continue to go up (and overall economics continue to improve) due to this shift, as well as the growing demand for variable data and personalized jobs.

“Digital technology
gives printers additional
superpowers”

Fespa Digital 2016 marks the 10 year anniversary of the Fespa Digital branded show, focused on digital technology and applications, in contrast to the larger and more comprehensive Global Expo. The inaugural Fespa Digital was in 2006 at the RAI, Amster-
dam, and since then the event has developed and grown over six further editions in Geneva (2008), Amsterdam (2009), Hamburg (2011), Barcelona (2012) and Munich (2014). Fespa divisional director, Roz McGuinness, comments: “We’re
thrilled to be returning to Amsterdam for this year’s show, 10 years since we launched the spinoff Digital event. Back in 2006, Fespa championed digital printing and identified it as a growing area which would benefit from its own event, and it’s fantastic to see how
three superheroes, embodying the key technologies at the show; Digiman (digital printing), Textilewoman (textile printing) and ESEman (signage). According to Roz, the ‘superhero’ story emphasises the fact that digital, along with textile and signage have become the real opportunities for wide format printers over the past 10 years. The traits we associate with superheroes can be applied to our digital print community. Digital technology gives printers additional superpowers and the potential to develop their businesses and just like our superheroes, they are stronger when combined. “Being adaptable to changes in technology and customer demand is a strength of our community, and at Fespa Digital 2016, visitors will be able to discover the tools and knowledge that will equip them for a powerful digital future,” says Roz. The 2016 edition, from 8 to 11 March, will cover the largest floor space of any event in the Digital show’s history, with 450 exhibitors occupying 42,000 sqm over seven halls at the RAI Exhibition
Centre, representing growth of 159% from the very first edition in 2006. Ricoh is one of these new additions to the exhibitor portfolio for 2016. Other first-time exhibitors at the show include AT Graphix, ATS Colore Digital, CWT Tools, Ex-cel Plastics, FH-Union UK, Impronta Gadget, Luscher Tschudi, Provis and Pals Print. For visitors, particularly specialty printers, here’s a preview of new products that will be on display at Fespa Digital 2016.

Acuity LED 1600 II, an improved wide-format LED UV inkjet printer from Fujifilm
Fujifilm will demonstrate the new Acuity LED 1600 II roll printer unveiled in the Autumn of 2015. The new Acuity builds on the best features of the popular Acuity LED 1600 with improved productivity and enhanced image output. The Acuity LED 1600 II features a new fast printing mode of 33sqm/ hr, which is more than 50% faster than the previous model. Fujifilm says this addresses customer demands for quicker job turnarounds and lower output cost. The machine, which has a maximum print width of 1,610mm, and a 1,200dpi maximum resolution, also offers simultaneous twolayer printing (white plus clear) and three-layer printing (colour plus white and clear) when combined with Caldera or ColorGate RIP software. Other new features include an
automated jetting adjustment based on the gap between the printhead and media as well as two new vacuum modes to enable the printer to handle a wider variety of substrates, such as thin or low-strength media. The Acuity LED 1600 features Fujifilm's Intelligent Curing Control which adjusts light from the LED lamp unit to manage the curing speed of the ink. The inks themselves are able to cover a wide colour gamut, assisted by the VersaDrop greyscale technology incorporated into the printheads. White and clear ink heads can also be disabled when not in use to reduce maintenance costs. Fujifilm says that, because the droplets merge at the nozzle rather than on the substrate, image quality is superior. The inks employed are Uvijet LL LED UV-curable products made by Fujifilm Sericol, tailored specifically for this platform. Tudor Morgan, sign & display segment manager at Fujifilm Europe comments: "visitors to the Fujifilm stand will have a great opportunity to see the very best in modern wide-format print technology which combines superb quality, versatility and productivity, and we are expecting to make a number of other new product announcements before the show opens to strengthen our portfolio."

The LED UV inkjet flatbed printer, which is an addition to Roland's existing LEF-12 and LEF-20 models, was developed in response to customer demand within the personalization and custom printing markets for an LEF printer with significantly increased production capabilities. To accommodate greater quanti-
cases and accessories. Kiosks offering on-site printing of photos taken by customers onto blank goods are also popping up at shopping malls around the world. These are all ideal markets for the LEF-300. Furthermore, the LEF300 incorporates an input/output system that supports external devices like warning lights and custom production automation systems, making it perfect for high-volume environments."
Rhotex 500, a 5m dye sublimation printing system from Durst
Durst will debut the Rhotex 500 – the first 5-metre dye sublimation printing system on the market for seamless and extra-wide soft signage and fabric applications. Soft Signage is already a preferred advertising medium, because it easy to fold, transport, install, wash and even recycle. The printing is done with water-based dispersion inks on uncoated and coated polyester fabrics. Durst will highlight its ‘Durst Water Technology’ and its expanded
UV portfolio of water-based, pollutant- and odour-free solutions to tap the LFP market with new and lucrative applications. In addition to the Rhotex 500, Durst will showcase the Rho 250 HS WT, which the company says is particularly suitable for sustainable POS and indoor advertising by offering offset printing quality on a variety of coated and uncoated paper surfaces. The company will also showcase the Alpha 190, a new printing system from its traditional textile printing segment. Durst offers one-step pigment inks and automatic material pretreatment to create technological convergence designed to give even LFP specialists an easy route towards the production of home textiles, clothing and upholstery coverings. Automation is also the crucial factor in the Durst UV portfolio for further increasing overall system efficiency. The Rho 1312 AF, which Durst says is the most versatile and fastest UV flatbed printer, sets new standards in this context with its feed, alignment

LEF-300, a UVLED flatbed printer for giftware and promotional items from Roland DG
ties and larger-sized items, the LEF-300's printing area has been expanded to 30" (wide) by 13" (long) – 50 percent more than the LEF-20. With four print heads and two UV-LED lamps, the LEF-300 enables bidirectional printing. The number of White and Clear (gloss) ink nozzles have been doubled for faster printing, increased density and opacity, and faster build-up of multiple layers for three-dimensional textures. According to the company, users can print on a vast array of substrates like PET, ABS and polycarbonate, soft materials such as TPU and leather, and a host of three-dimensional items ranging from smart phone cases and laptop covers to signs, giftware and promotional items. The LEF-300's built-in vacuum table helps hold thin and soft materials in place, allowing for easier job setup and eliminating time-consuming errors. Daniel Valade, Roland DGA's product manager for the VersaUV LEF Series points out how the growth of digital technology has facilitated the printing of photographs, illustrations and logos onto items that people wear or carry. He sees potential in the application of the LEF-300 for use in mass production. “Digital technology advancements have made it easy for individuals to use these kind of items to express themselves, and to simply stay close to the things they value. The market for on-demand printing onto various articles is high, and we expect to see this growth continue in the years to come. More and more businesses are providing custom printing services for smartphone

Jetrix LX5, the first LED UV printer from InkTec
InkTec will debut the Jetrix LX5, which is equipped with 6-picolitre Konica Minolta printheads and is available with a four (CMYK), six (CMYK+2 white) or seven channel (as six channel but with +1 varnish/primer) colour
configuration. Using InkTec’s specially formulated UV inks, the Jetrix LX5 has a printing speed of 39sqm/hr (production mode). It runs at 11sqm/ hr for fine art printing. Ben Woodruff, head of national sales, says: “The Jetrix LX5’s ability to direct energy more efficiently and therefore reduce the overall power consumption means that the total cost of ownership over its lifetime makes it a realistic and affordable option.” InkTec has developed a new version of the Jetrix General User Interface (GUI) to meet customers’ increased expectations. This innovative software is designed to achieve a higher quality print with faster speeds than the previous version. From now on, all of Jetrix machines print at least 10% faster than previous models and incorporates some newly designed functions such as drag and print.
