By 2022 the $23.2 billion digital packaging sector will account for nearly 5.3% of packaging by value, the 334 billion A4 prints will be some 3.2% of the print area output while almost six million tons is also 3.2% of the total. So even after five years of very strong growth digital will still be a tiny minority – hardly the major disruption predicted by some. Read inside about how a significant base will set the stage for major changes in the future of packaging.

Multi-Color Corporation Acquires Constantia Labels Division return objective to exceed 20% compounded annual growth over the next five years. Cost synergies are anticipated to reach $15 million (or 2% of acquired revenues) by Fiscal Year March 2020 through a combination of procurement, SG&A, and manufacturing efficiencies. As an example, Multi-Color will utilize Constantia Labels' pressure sensitive substrate manufacturing capability in the US and Europe to drive future efficiencies. Both companies currently generate EBITDA margins of approximately 18%.

Multi-Color Corporation announces today that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the Labels Division of Constantia Flexibles ("Constantia Labels") from Constantia Flexibles GmbH ("Constantia Flexibles") for approximately $1.3 billion (€1.15 billion), payable in cash and stock. The combined annual revenues and EBITDA of the two businesses will be approximately $1.6 billion and $300 million, respectively.

ME Printer August 2017

The combination brings together Constantia Labels' high performing Food and Beverage business with Multi-Color's strong Wine and Spirit, and Home and Personal Care platforms, and emerging global position in Healthcare.

6

Additional growth opportunities for Multi-Color exist in Home and Personal Care by utilizing Constantia Labels' European operational footprint and assets. Growth opportunities for Constantia Labels exist in Food & Beverage and derive from Multi-Color's US operational footprint and assets. The stronger combined footprint in Asia will provide further revenue opportunities.

The strengthened global platform creates a much greater acquisition pipeline and higher potential synergies from future acquisitions, especially in Food and Beverage, the largest segment of the global labels market. "The acquisition of Constantia Labels marks a major milestone in the evolution of Multi-Color," said Nigel Vinecombe, Executive Chairman of Multi-Color. "We are bringing together complementary talents in markets and geographies, diversifying our business and creating a global leader with a transaction that is financially attractive, which will better help us serve our customers.” Management estimates the presynergy forward EBITDA multiple for acquiring Constantia Labels is approximately 10.25x. The forward EBITDA multiple including pro forma run-rate synergies is estimated to be 9.2x. Management expects the transaction to be meaningfully accretive to Core EPS in the Fiscal Year ending March 2019, the first full-year of combined results, and supports Multi-Color's total shareholder

As part of the transaction, Mike Henry, current EVP and Head of Constantia Labels, is expected to become CEO-elect of Multi-Color Corporation, and Constantia Flexibles will become a 16.6% shareholder in Multi-Color. Henry (51), brings 17 years of experience in the labels sector, having started his career at KPMG as a Chartered Accountant, spent 14 years in senior management roles for Spear Labels (based in Cincinnati), and has led Constantia Labels for the past three years. Current Multi-Color CEO, Vadis Rodato, is expected to retire in early 2018 after a transition period. Nigel Vinecombe will remain Executive Chairman. "I welcome Mike Henry to the executive team and representatives from Constantia Flexibles to the Board of Directors of Multi-Color," Vinecombe added. "I am delighted to take on this new opportunity and, together with an outstanding team of employees, build on the strengths of the combined businesses to drive forward Multi-Color to further success in the global labels industry.” The transaction purchase price is approximately $1.3 billion (€1.15 billion), and will be settled in cash and 3.4 million shares in MultiColor stock (representing 19.9% of current stock outstanding). Multi-Color's stock will be issued to Constantia Flexibles at a price of $75 per share. Two representatives of Constantia Flexibles will join Multi-Color's Board of Directors, and the shares issued as consideration will be subject to customary lock-up provisions.

CRON to Deliver Exceptional Image Quality with Low Cost Solutions at Labelexpo Europe CRON’s commitment to delivering exceptional quality prepress solutions and excellent value for money will be demonstrated during Labelexpo Europe, September 25-28, in Brussels, Belgium. The company will showcase the CRON HDI Flexo 600 and 1600 CTP models at the CRON stand (9B18). The HDI Flexo range — designed to provide outstanding flexibility — is available in three formats: 600 and

900mm for label applications; and 1600mm for general packaging work. All HDI Flexo models are compatible with thermal film, digital polyester-back flexo and letterpress plates. Additionally, the HDI 600 features a clamping system, which makes it possible to image on a diverse range of media, including thermal offset plates and dry offset metal-backed plates. The HDI Flexo models offer low-cost solutions for a wide range of applications without compromising on quality. Three model variants allow users to fine tune production to their print requirements: “S” variants have a maximum resolution of 5080 dpi, while “S+” and “H” variants have a maximum resolution of 9600 dpi. CRON’s digital plate imaging sets a new price-quality standard, bringing digital image control to flexo and letterpress plate imaging.

“Prepress solutions for the flexo and letterpress markets have traditionally been very expensive to run and maintain, let alone the initial outlay, meaning that most label and packaging converters have been forced to outsource their prepress production”, comments Derek Sizer, Regional Director, CRON Europe. “The CRON HDI Flexo are very competitively-priced machines in comparison, meaning packaging converters can bring plate production in-house. This reduces lead times and significantly increases their flexibility to take on a wide range of production jobs.” A prototype of the HDI Flexo CTP was exhibited at Labelexpo 2015, and the range was officially launched at drupa last year. After achieving notable success with its Flexo HDI range in China and Asian markets, CRON is now set to focus its efforts in EMEAR and the US.

Cicogres Sees Quantifiable Benefits From Xaar 1003 Upgrade At the heart of ceramic tile manufacturer Cicogres, is a philosophy of continuous innovation and improvement in order to provide the best product design and quality for its customers. Company owner, Israel Sanchez and his team at Cicogres have always believed that digital inkjet technology enables the company to produce differentiated products with a particular focus on product quality and attention to every detail.

ME Printer August 2017

Not long after the Xaar 1003 was launched, Cicogres, who had been using Xaar printheads for around 8 years, opted to upgrade its tile decoration machine in order to take advantage of improved print quality and uptime.

10

Technical Director, Ricardo Baldayo, who made the decision to upgrade, explains the main benefits they have seen, “When we upgraded we could very quickly see the improvements delivered by the Xaar 1003. You can really notice the improvements in print quality over the Xaar 1002.

There’s a huge difference between the two printheads.”

printheads in a print bar, and at different greyscale levels.

Since the move to Xaar 1003 printheads, Cicogres has also seen other advantages. “Line speed has increased because we only need to do routine maintenance when the line is stopped for other reasons,” comments Ricardo. “In terms of performance, we see that this printhead is faster than previous printheads. And because we don’t need to adjust the printheads or clean them, production uptime has increased as well as print quality.”

As with its predecessors, the Xaar 1003 family of printheads combines Xaar’s unique TF Technology with Xaar’s Hybrid Side Shooter architecture so that ink is recirculated directly past the back of the nozzle during drop ejection at the highest flow rates in the industry. This ensures that the printhead operates reliably even in the harshest industrial environments. Ink is in constant circulation, preventing sedimentation and subsequent blocking of the nozzles when jetting.

The benefits seen by Cicogres are the result of a number of innovations introduced with the Xaar 1003. These include XaarGuard which provides mechanical protection to the nozzle which dramatically reduces the frequency of maintenance to once per shift or less. Another improvement is the use of Tuned Actuator Manufacturing which ensures actuator performance in each printhead is optimized; this in turn achieves uniform print quality across all

The Xaar 1003C has been designed to enable tile manufacturers using either the Xaar 1001C or Xaar 1002C printheads to easily upgrade their systems due to it being fully backward compatible. Delivering both improved print quality and production uptime, the Xaar 1003C is the ideal choice for tile manufacturers seeking to deliver a greater level of manufacturing performance.

Flint Group Launches Nyloflex FTC Digital For Corrugated Postprint Following “The Easy Way”, Flint Group Flexographic Products expands its product range with a further inherent flat top dot flexo plate, which provides significant fluting reduction on various corrugated boards from fine to rough flute. Holding the finest highlights, the nyloflex FTC Digital Plate offers outstanding print quality - sharp and defined elements with precisely reproduced text and codes, inviting printers to push the boundaries of print resolution in corrugated postprint. Furthermore, the new flexo plate features excellent ink transfer, resulting in very smooth solids with even ink laydown, which allows for high and consistent print quality on a variety of substrates.

ME Printer August 2017

“With a continuing trend for lower quality liners due to cost reasons, however, uncompromised requirements for quality printing, printers, retailers and brand owners demand good quality in corrugated postprint, both for superior liners and more challenging materials,” says Dr. Eva Freudenthaler, Vice President Technology, Flint Group Flexographic Products. “With the development of nyloflex FTC Plate, we therefore had two focal points with regard to print quality - to reduce the fluting effect across many different liner qualities and to further enhance the quality of fine highlight screens in corrugated postprint - while at the same time keeping it simple for the pre-press

12

operation by providing a plate that can be processed like any normal digital printing plate.” nyloflex FTC Digital Plate provides the benefits of flat top dots in an easy and efficient way by processing it like any standard digital plate - no additional equipment, processing steps or consumables required. Hence, the complexity of plate making is clearly simplified, while reproducibility and consistency is increased. The plate material displays the wellknown durability, robustness, high ozone resistance and good storage capabilities that are standard for all nyloflex printing plates. On the press, the new inherent flat top dot flexo plate allows for great consistency due to less dot gain tolerances, higher wear resistance and print-run stability, also at increased press

speeds. The nyloflex FTC Digital Plate ensures a reduced bump-up and consistent dot gain over the entire print-run. In addition, the new flexo plate provides cost savings and increased productivity through quick press set-up, resulting in shortened start-up times and reduced waste. The new photopolymer flexo printing plate, nyloflex FTC Digital, will be available in several thicknesses, from 2.84 mm (.112”) up to 6.35 mm (.250”) as of July 2017. Interested customers can request free test kits and a specially launched promotion box with print samples in 4c and 2c, printed with nyloflex FTC Digital Plate and waterbased ink from Flint Group, PremoNova Base Board on different substrates, to illustrate the outstanding print quality via info. flexo@flintgrp.com or at : www.flintgrp.com

The Automation Arena will debut at this year’s exhibition as Labelexpo Europe returns to Brussels Expo 25 - 28 September. Industry 4.0 is the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. Demonstrating this shift towards combining industry with the Internet of Things, the Automation Arena is a practical live workshop featuring two automated press lines for digital and conventional label production. It will show visitors how information management can integrate workflow and automate production, working towards better performance, reliability and profitability for today’s printer.

ME Printer August 2017

Located in Hall 11, the Automation Arena is being held in collaboration with Cerm, Esko, Xeikon, MPS, Kocher + Beck, AVT, Rotocontrol, Matho and Wasberger. Three half-hour long realtime presentations will run daily at 11.00, 13.00 and 15.00 over the show’s first three days and once at 11.00 on the final day. These sessions will be filmed live and relayed via large screens to show visitors every single, detailed aspect of the job.

14

The print jobs run during the Automation Arena will be produced using digital and conventional printing technology. Job creation, artwork uploading and MIS order processing steps will take place in

Cerm’s system before the pre-flighting, quality checks, proofing and customer approval are progressed using Esko’s software platform and automation engine. This will be followed by Cerm scheduling, ink and substrate checking, tool ordering and the sending of JDF files, ready for printing. Both presses will utilize AT740 film from Avery Dennison, with inks supplied by Flint Group. The conventional print runs will be produced on an MPS EF 430, 8-color press - with no gear cylinder connection, intelligent pressure setting and zero waste roll change - which in turn will be fitted with a Kocher + Beck UR Precision 440 U non-stop splicer unwind and AVT’s Helios Product Line inspection. A Rotocontrol RSC 340 WFL slitter and turret rewinding unit will also feature with Wasberger’s fully automatic Core Cutter S and Matho’s EM180 Cuttopipe waste removal system. Job files, differing from the conventional print runs, will be sent to a Xeikon X-800 digital front end for batching, step and repeat and preparation of job identification, diecut, inspection and turret rewinder barcodes for printing on a Xeikon 3300

press with an inline laser die-cutting unit. When the Xeikon press starts its run, the audience will be able to see the different identification barcodes in operation, AVT defect detection, laser die-cutting set-up and rewinder automation. The final stages in the job automation process will return to the Cerm operator and the audience will be taken through steps including warehousing, job picking, shipping carrier allocation, customer notification and invoicing. Jade Grace, Labelexpo Europe’s project director commented: “This type of tradeshow feature has never been done anywhere before. The Automation Arena will clearly demonstrate to Labelexpo visitors that automation is not only the promise of tomorrow, but that it's available today. “To remain profitable, printers need to plan ahead by integrating their pre-press and production workflows with their management operations and connecting their entire supply chain. Printers automating their business will boost their competitiveness and become more agile with lower costs, increased productivity and better reliability, leading to higher profit margins. The Automation Arena will give attendees a good insight into the benefits of automation and a taste of how label and packaging production may evolve over the next five to ten years.”

With a full lifecycle approach, products are manufactured based on highest ethical standards for people, and materials that we use. Striving from design, to improve performance, reduce waste and move towards a more circular economy with service based models and take back programs.

24

From our operations perspective, HP has publicly committed to reduce our CO2 footprint, to move to renewable electricity and to achieve zero deforestation for our papers. These comprehensive goals and actions have gained the recognition as one of the most sustainable companies in the world.

Economic concerns, technological threat and uncertain futures have contributed to a crisis of confidence in print. Do you agree to this statement? If yes, what more needs to be done? I don’t agree that print is in crisis today. Printing as a technology has been challenged, not reporting much in the way of growth over the last five years or more. But HP is driving, a print renaissence, growing again from our leadership position. In our graphics printing solutions business, for instance, we’ve been untapping incremental opportunities and applications that have fueled a continued year on year growth, for quite a few years now. Decoration, textiles, labels, packaging, and 3D printing are areas for continued growth moving forward.

What sort of factors are shaping today’s print industry? With the emergence of new tech-

nology and the penetration onto new applications, digital printing and digitally printed applications are representing a bigger portion of the overall printing industry. As such, regulations are having and additional focus to upgrade and include digital printing into their scope. Hazardous inks, air quality, recyclability are key areas where less sustainable technologies will struggle to stay in compliance to new regulations. From the customers perspective, Innovative brands are leveraging the advantages of digital (more agility, shorter runs, and personalization) for their business success. Investing time from brands to explore new possibilities, and from Printing companies to support these explorations, is part of the driving force to digital printing adoption.

What are the challenges that block the pathway towards sustainability in the printing industry?

The inertia of print buyers requesting old known technologies to do their jobs, plus the lack of awareness of newer and more sustainable technologies, are the key challenges to adoption of more sustainable solutions. Awareness of how digital technologies are enabling printing on demand, reducing inventory waste due to overproduction and obsolescence. Or how water based solutions (such as HP Latex Technology) can provide healthier and more sustainable solutions for signage and decoration market versus older technologies like solvent or UV.

New media options, digital technology implementations and green expectations can breed market uncertainty. In such a scenario, how can printers make sure their new investments can bring in maximum RoI? Digital printing continues to be a great investment. The technology advancements and price/productivity improvements are enabling digital printing to penetrate into new applications. There are applications where digital media will penetrate

and displace print, but many others are appearing and compensate the decline. New investments need to anticipate these changes and choose leading technologies and suppliers, that allows the printing company serve these new applications. Versatility of the technologies chosen will also be very relevant, to be able to adapt quickly to new applications. And the last key factor for a printing company to succeed is focusing on market development. Untapping new applications require focus from the printing company to educate the industry and walk the customers to the new possibilities of digital print.

How according to you can printers reshape their businesses by aligning commercial and environmental goals?

Business practices to achieve commercial goals are not necessarily opposite to environmental goals. In fact, report shows that innovative companies can develop processes and solutions that are good for business and good for environment.

Independent organisations are promoting sustainability practices in printing and manufacturing operations through education and certification program. HP is platinum partner of Sustainable Green Partnership (SGP), that has this objective in the US. From HP’s side, the HP EcoSolutions Training program helps companies to gain new knowledge and to assist clients looking for wide format graphics solutions with a reduced environmental impact. It is a free, web based interactive training covering the fundamentals to better combine business and environment.

Do you believe use of renewable resources can pave way for sustainability? If yes, what initiatives has your company taken to make sure your products and solutions offer ecological benefits?

As we continue to reinvent a more sustainable business and society, both cost-effective and low carbon sources of energy are essential to the future. Technology and sustainability can combine to become a powerful force for innovation, helping reinvent how businesses, communities, and individuals can thrive.

In regards to HP brand paper and paper-based product packaging, HP has committed that all of them will be derived from certified and recycled sources by 2020.

ME Printer August 2017

HP has publicly committed to to move to renewable electricity to continue leading this transformation in the industry.

PDF 2.0: New Capabilities for Print Production Mark Lewiecki, the Senior Product Manager at Adobe, speaks about the opportunities PDF 2.0 brings along In the near future, the International Organization for standards will publish ISO 32000-2, the first major revision of the PDF specification since 2008, when Adobe officially released the open standard to the world. ISO Technical Committee 171 has been working on the upgrade for over 8 years, and have added several new capabilities that can enhance security, accessibility, 3D, multimedia, geospatial mapping and prepress workflows. Once the PDF 2.0 spec is published, the ISO Committee which maintains Graphic Arts standards (TC-130), will formulate a new version of PDF/X to specify exactly how the new features should be implemented for use in print production. PDF/X-6 will be ready sometime in the next 12-18 months. The workflow systems which process PDF, the RIPs which render it, and the applications which generate it, will all need to be upgraded for printers to realize the benefits.

ME Printer August 2017

Although the industry has some time to figure out how PDF 2.0 will play out, it is not too early begin considering its impact on prepress production. The main print-related adjustments to the PDF imaging model are:

26

Page-level Output Intent: Output profiles are essential to modern color management. The images and graphics in a PDF file may have different origins, encodings and gamuts. But, when rendered for print reproduction, they all need to be converted to the color space of a standardized printing condition (such as SWOP uncoated), or a device-specific color space. Today, PDF/X files include a single Output Intent profile, which is applied to every page in the job. However, the pages within a job may be printed quite differently. For example, a magazine: the cover is printed on coated stock (full color) on a gravure press, while the inside pag-

es, which may include both monochrome and process-color pages, are offset-printed on uncoated. So, a single Output Profile cannot always cover an entire multi-page file. With the ability in PDF 2.0 to attach multiple Output Profiles, and associate them with specific pages, prepress solutions/operators will have greater flexibility in managing, routing and automating multi-page jobs. (Note: this feature requires use of PDF/X-6.) Black Point Compensation: Adobe introduced the concept of BPC in Photoshop 5 (2006). It is mainly used to convert an image from a larger gamut (e.g. sRGB) to a smaller gamut (e.g. SWOP uncoated). Before BPC, out-of-gamut shadow tones were all converted to solid back. BPC preserves shadow detail by re-mapping the full grayscale range (the “L” in CieLab – for “luminosity”), albeit with some compression. Modern prepress workflow systems and RIPs enable BPC to be turned on for a job, which works for most situations. However, in some cases, BPC produces unsatisfactory results (e.g. when converting from a smaller to larger gamut). With PDF 2.0, it will be possible to specify BPC instructions (on/off/default), for an entire job, or individual elements within. Like most image conversions, BPC transformations are lossy. So converting at run-time vs. upstream is always preferred. Embedding a BPC switch for objects within a PDF 2.0 file will enable late-binding BPC conversion in the RIP, e.g. when the rendering is performed by the Adobe PDF Print Engine. Spectral Values for Device Colorants: When a colorant is printed on a substrate, it reflects/absorbs different amounts of light at different points on the visible spectrum (400-700 nm). Communicating a brand color

by name, or printed swatch, or CieLab value is the norm today, but can be problematical. Even worse is the common practice of communicating a color by “equivalent” RGB or CMYK values. Spectral values are absolute and definitive. Their meaning is not open to misinterpretation, nor dilution by tolerances (acceptable deviations). Neither are they dependent upon lighting conditions. The Color eXchange Format (CxF), an ISO standard, defines a color using a set of reflectance values for different points on the spectrum. One or more CxFs can be attached to the Output Intent dictionary within a PDF 2.0 file. This ability will enable greater accuracy in the reproduction of spot colors (critical to brand owners). Even more importantly, spectral colors will enable more accurate emulation of specialty colors on proofing devices, including when they are used in a process fashion (i.e. screened and overprinted). Future workflows in package printing (both flexo and inkjet), industrial printing and textile printing will benefit from superior Quality Control, made possible by PDF 2.0’s ability to convey spot colors with spectral data. (Note: this feature requires use of PDF/X-6.)

Machinery Makers Eye Sharjah Plastics Show The rapid expansion of the GCC’s downstream industry is a key factor that is generating global interest in a plastics exhibition and conference in Sharjah. Organized by Expo Centre Sharjah in association with All India Plastics Manufacturers Association (AIPMA), the 4th Plastivision Arabia 2017 has already seen some of the leading players from across the world confirming their presence. “Today, Plastivision Arabia is one of the biggest gatherings of industry executives and professionals in the Middle East region. The partnership with AIPMA has not only helped Expo Centre to establish the show in quick time but also develop and maintain great synergy with the Indian business community in the UAE and the region,” said H.E. Abdalla Sultan Mohamed Al Owais, Chairman, Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry & Expo Centre Sharjah. The previous edition of the show held in 2016 featured more than 250 leading manufacturers and dealers from across the world and attracted

6,619 trade visitors from 88 countries. The 4th Plastivision Arabia 2017 will be held at Expo Centre Sharjah from December 11 to 14. “What started as a plastics processing industry event is now one of the largest multi-industry trade show in Sharjah. Targeting the plastics, mold-making, printing and packaging sectors, the 4th Plastivision Arabia will be held along with 4th Arabia Mold & and 3rd Print Pack Arabia,” said H.E. Saif Mohammed Al Midfa, CEO, Expo Centre Sharjah. Increasing foreign participation is a key facet of Plastivision Arabia. “Apart from the largest number of Indian exhibitors, courtesy AIPMA, Plastivision Arabia can boast of strong participation from Taiwan and China. Since Taiwan plastic machinery enjoys a substantial market share in the Middle East, the show will have a large contingent of Taiwan exhibitors who are looking at expanding their presence in the region,” added H.E. Midfa.

With plastics machinery and raw materials forming a big chunk of bilateral trade between China and the UAE, the Chinese participation will also go up considerably for the upcoming edition. Since the Indian plastics machinery industry is a global player providing cutting edge products at a competitive price, the show becomes an important platform for Indian machinery makers to tap the GCC and Middle East market. Moreover, for the first time, Germany’s Arburg will be present at Plastivision Arabia as a Seminar Supporter where it will present a topic on ‘Applicationspecific machine technology for costeffective packaging moulding’.

Digital Print for Packaging:

The Pace is Steady and Picking Up In this article, Sean Smyth – Print Consultant with Smithers Pira examines the results of a new report that looks at the growth of Digital Print for Packaging to 2022. This report breaks down the projected growth by packaging application, and shows some surprising results. In 2016 Smithers Pira published the latest version of what has proved to be a well-received report: “The Future of Digital Print for Packaging to 2022”. It looks at the trends, drivers, applications and new technology that is shaping the future production landscape of packaging and labels, with forecasts of the market development over the next five years. These years will see major changes as digital production goes mainstream that will make many brands and retailers look at packaging in new ways, making converters do different things as new supply chains develop. In 2017 digitally printed labels and packaging add up to an overall $13.2 billion market globally. The label sector was the early adopter and is pretty mature in most regions. There is very strong growth in corrugated as very high performance single pass presses capable of tens of millions of square meters of output annually are snapped up by converters, cartons, flexible packaging and direct-to-shape, with developments in metal printing.

ME Printer August 2017

In 2022 the sector will grow to be worth $23.2 billion after five healthy

28

years of growth averaging 11.2% in value terms. Tonnage grows at an average CAGR of 28.1%, as cartons and the corrugated packaging comes on stream. So, no wonder you are reading the article – hopefully considering how your organization can take advantage of this growth. You are not alone. The $13.2 billion is big, but digital packaging is only 3.33% of printed packaging and perhaps a little over 2.0% of all packaging (as there is so much non-printed). In terms of printed area the equivalent of 163 billion A4 prints is just 1.72% of the total, while the 1.7 million tons of products represents just under 1.03% of all packaging. By 2022 the $23.2 billion digital packaging sector will account for nearly 5.3% of packaging by value, the 334 billion A4 prints will be some 3.2% of the print area output while almost six million tons is also 3.2% of the total. So even after five years of very strong growth digital will still be a tiny minority – hardly the major

disruption predicted by some. But it is a significant base that will set the stage for major changes in supply chains, and even the functions of packaging which are developing. Growth is forecast in different applications and different regions at varying rates as shown in the figure, led by the small flexible packaging, metal and rigid plastics while corrugated, cartons and labels are the drivers of real volume growth. As more converters get involved and make investments they will find out how the technologies can be used to benefit their customers. There will be new campaigns and these will be copied, and converters will provide new services and response to their customers which will allow significant supply chain efficiencies, some of which are not clear in early 2017, but will open up over the next years to better suit the final packaging consumers. Satisfying buyers is the goal for all parties. The digital packaging sector is maturing. Around 2010 the big question for brands and converters was: "What can the technology do?", and what should it do. After seven years of concentrated development the question has changed to: "Where is the application value?" as all parties across the supply chains realize that using digital printing can help make them money. This is the case for brands/retailers (and their agencies including design), as well as for packaging and label converters, some of whom are really prospering. It is also true for the equipment/consumable

suppliers as well, although not all have succeeded. Drupa 2016 saw a real step-change in the quality and performance of digital printing, from established suppliers and newcomers into the digital arena who are experienced in packaging. HP is the market leader with thousands of Indigo presses producing very high-quality labels, cartons and flexible packaging while its inkjet monster presses are making inroads into corrugated. But HP is by no means alone as others push their quality, productivity and improve their cost of production position. There are important breakthroughs in new substrates and surface treatments, in finishing where digital methods are also making progress, and most importantly in workflow improvements. It is in high volume corrugated where there is to be a real appetite for high volume liner and post-print, to offer new functions and gain plant efficiencies. It is interesting that this is being led by some of

the giants in the sector such as Georgia Pacific and DS Smith, as well as by more agile independents. Over time the boost in quality from the latest inkjet, much on standard substrates, will prove to be a tipping point for high volume, mainstream production of inkjet printed packaging. It is the arrival of new high speed single pass inkjet presses, liner and post-print, that can handle millions of square meters annually being adopted across the world. These will allow new business models, giving secondary shelf-ready packs and transit packaging buyers new opportunities. The tools now on the market are firmly aimed at offset and flexo alternatives, as these are taken up there will be significant change in the production equipment and methods driving new products and services to develop to make corrugated more relevant. Box makers are hoping that the commodity "Boring brown box", will be consigned to history, at least for some applications.

Digital printing will enable packaging supply chains to develop, providing advantages in cost, time and flexibility for buyers and final consumers. In 2017 the great majority of packaging and labels is produced by specialist converters, delivering to fillers and packers. These fill the packs and apply labels, adding any coding and complete packs are then delivered into the retail distribution chain. The packaging has to perform across the supply chain, protecting the contents from the producer, through the distribution chain to the consumer. Changing the location and timing of pack printing can deliver some of these benefits, at the pack/filling stage or in the retail distribution chains. This could be new players, or more likely an experienced converter my set up a through-the-wall facility closer to its customer in partnership. Fundamentally, using digital printing in packaging enables brands and retailers to make decisions later that are closer to the end consumer. The result is making packaging and labels more relevant to the end consumer who ultimately determine the success or failure of brands and retailers. This means new ways of delighting customers will be found, and many players will find how they can profit from this fast growing, fast changing marketplace. Come and join!

Opinion & insight

We Have Switched to Offering Eco-Friendly Printing Technologies: Jacky’s Ashish Panjabi, the COO of Jacky’s Group of Companies, speaks to ME Printer about sustainability in the printing industry Many companies are pushing for sustainability in the printing industry. How do you as a company that provides printing products and solutions make sure you contribute to the cause? Sustainability is a vital part of our business strategy when partnering with technology providers that align commercially and environmentally. The printing industry is constantly evolving and becoming more environmentfriendly, refining materials and processes to reduce waste and carbon footprints.

ME Printer August 2017

In contrast to traditional printing methods using solvent ink technologies, which are harmful to the environment, there has been a huge shift towards eco-friendly practices in all areas including the printing of signage, in line with the need for more buildings to be LEED certified. Jacky's discontinued the use of solvent ink technologies nearly six years

30

ago and we no longer stock any solvent and so-called eco-solvent based printers. We have switched to offering ecofriendly printing technologies, such as the Latex ink products from HP, UV ink products from HP and SCREEN. We are now seeing more of our clients embrace this as trends have shifted towards a greater demand for greener solutions.

Economic concerns, technological threats and uncertain futures have contributed to a crisis of confidence in print. Do you agree to this statement? If yes, what more needs to be done? I wouldn’t agree. If anything, we’ve seen print volumes on the rise. Time to market, distributed printing and localized marketing have meant that we have seen more printers print more campaigns for retailers, events or exhibitions.

Further, print has moved beyond just this into areas like interior design where curtains, wallpaper and other fixtures can be printed, thus giving customers better creativity and suppliers, lower inventory holding costs.

What sort of factors are shaping today’s print industry? Businesses need to recognise how to better make use of their assets and with time printing technol-

ogy the industry is constantly evolving. The key factors shaping the industry include consumer behaviour, development of new technologies and environmental concerns. Environmental concerns - as mentioned, with the increasing demand and need for ecofriendly printing technologies, it is true that the environment plays a key role in shaping the industry as more and more companies will need to adopt technologies and processes that meet consumer and industry requirements. Shift in consumer behaviour and spending - demand for printing is changing constantly since consumers now have several options, including the rapid increase in ecommerce compared with retail shopping, which has significantly changed the way consumers shop. Additionally, increasing levels of disposable income also impact both consumer spending patterns and investment opportunities for companies in printing technologies. New technology - the development of technology plays an important role in demand and supply. The evolution of various online platforms has generated a demand for digital printing in many areas as printers are now able to produce printed material faster, more efficiently and more cost-effective with better end results.

What are the challenges that block the pathway towards sustainability in the printing industry? Factors such as changing market expectations, the shift in the media landscape – including the rise of digital media, technological innovation, global economic conditions and environmental concerns pose challenges to the industry.

New media options, digital technology implementations and green expectations can breed market uncertainty. In such a scenario, how can printers make sure their new investments can bring in maximum RoI? The Middle East’s printing sector is expected to exceed $40 billion in 2022, up from $26.8 billion in 2017, growing at an annual rate of 8.7 percent, according to Smithers Pira report. We have seen an increased emphasis on more efficient use of budgets, resulting in older, solvent-based printers being taken offline and replaced by more efficient printers such as the HP Latex large format printers. The advent of digital printing has played a significant role in transforming the industry, largely because it is economically viable as it requires minimum or no setup fee. As a result, companies can print materials without incurring a large installation fee and as the print volume increases the more money you save, which ultimately helps the bottom line.

How can printers reshape their businesses by aligning commercial and environmental goals? Consumer preferences are constantly evolving with more users becoming more aware of the en-

vironmental impact of products, services and supply chains, so it is vitally important for businesses across industries, including printing, to listen to their consumers and users or risk missing out on an increasingly large target audience. Also, more efficient use of resources and energy that help to reduce operational costs makes sound business sense and should be embraced. The printing industry can be viewed as a pioneer in aligning commercial and environmental goals in the sense that businesses typically viewed as having a detrimental impact on the environment with the use of paper and ink are now working within a framework focused on sustainability, so other industries can and should follow suit. At Jacky’s Business Solutions we are proud that we can help our clients adopt a more sustainable approach thanks to constant innovation in our products. The HP Latex 750 displays unique waterbased HP Latex Technology and delivers a combination of true application versatility, high image quality and high productivity, making the process better for the operator and the environment. Increased print volumes allow our customers to reduce their initial investment. One of the best ways the printing industry reduces its environmental impact is through the use of recycled paper. Paper is one of the world’s most recycled materials – far more than plastics or glass – and is one of the few materials that is able to be 100 percent recycled.

ME Printer August 2017

To stay in the race and keep growing, it is vital for the printing community to come together and tackle these challenges by reinventing and refining systems and processes, while keeping

in mind consumer needs and trends. We have seen also increased demand for recyclable media and water-based inks such as Latex inks, which are easier to transport, dispose of and re-use.

Heidelberg Starts The New Financial Year With An Increase In Sales And Earnings Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has started the new 2017/18 financial year (April 1 to June 30, 2017) with an increase in sales and earnings. That means it is on course to achieve its annual targets. After initiating a raft of measures, Heidelberg has already sharpened its strategic focus in the first quarter on the key areas of technology leadership, digital transformation, and operational excellence. The company is underscoring its ambitions to consolidate a new corporate culture and return to growth with the motto “Heidelberg goes digital”. “We are making good progress in transforming Heidelberg into a digital company,” said Rainer Hundsdörfer, CEO of Heidelberg. “We have already had our initial successes in the first quarter, thanks to our new digital presses and two constructive acquisitions. We want to become even faster and more efficient in the future and are continuing to reconfigure company structures to that end.”

Positive results from the implementation already in the first quarter

During the first quarter of the current financial year, Heidelberg showcased itself as an industry pioneer for digitization at the key China Print trade fair. Customers showed a great deal of interest in this forward-looking topic, which translated into positive developments in incoming orders in this important market. Heidelberg has encountered strong customer demand for the “Primefire”, the first industrial digital packaging printing press, and order books are full for the next two years.

The digitization strategy at Heidelberg has also been rewarded on the capital markets. For example, at the end of the period under review, a convertible bond was converted to equity almost in its entirety, which will see interest costs drop by approximately €5 million a year.

Medium-term targets in focus

Given the strong demand for the digital product portfolio in packaging and label printing and the expansion and increased networking in a digital business model (Equipment, Consumables, Service), Heidelberg sees itself as being on course to achieve the company targets for 2022 that were announced in June (company sales ~€3 billion / EBITDA of €250 – 300 million / net result > €100 million). The additional revenues from new applications via digital platforms are being grown by the ongoing expansion of an eCommerce platform. Through the announced efficiency enhancements and improvements to the cost structure, operational excellence measures are set to drive up profitability by approximately €50 million.

Heidelberg starts the new financial year 2017/18 with an increase in sales and earnings As indicated, net sales and the net result in the first quarter of the year under review have improved over

the same quarter of the previous year. For example, sales rose compared to the previous year, reaching €495 million (same quarter of previous year: €486 million). This was attributable primarily to Western Europe and China. As anticipated, at €629 million, incoming orders were below those of the same quarter of the previous year (€804 million), which saw a particularly high level of incoming orders from the drupa trade show. The order backlog increased by over 20 percent from €497 million at the end of the financial year to €603 million as at June 30, 2017. Profitability, as expressed in EBITDA and EBIT, increased in the quarter under review compared to the previous year’s values. At €14 million, EBITDA was far better than in the same quarter of the previous year (€1 million), while EBIT amounted to €–3 million (previous year: €–16 million). Due to lower financing costs, the financial result improved to €–13 million (same quarter of previous year: €–16 million). Including income taxes, the net result after taxes of €–16 million was a significant improvement over the previous year’s figure (€–37 million). As a result of company and real estate acquisitions and payments for portfolio optimization, free cash flow in the first three months was negative, at €–13 million (previous year: €6 million). Compared to the financial year-end, shareholder’s equity increased to €382 million on the balance sheet date (previous year: €167 million).

ME Printer August 2017

By taking over software supplier DOCUFY, the company is reinforcing the new digital platforms business area and expanding its Industry 4.0 portfolio. In the growth segment of

consumables, business with coatings and pressroom chemicals has been further expanded in the EMEA region following the acquisition of this area from Fujifilm. Additional measures relating to operational excellence include efficiency improvements on all levels, such as higher efficiency in logistics achieved by the optimization of the tariff model in this sector and by acquiring the logistics center.

With over 20 years of experience designing and manufacturing thermal CTP devices in its own facilities, Kodak has continued to innovate in order to optimize performance while reducing environmental impact. Our latest models enable significant power savings—over both our previous CTP devices and the competition—without compromising on productivity or uptime. Available later this year, a new W-speed option will make the TRENDSETTER Platesetter the world’s fastest process-free CTP, with throughputs up to 68 plates per hour (eight-up) and 75 plates per hour (four-up) imaging KODAK SONORA Plates, and a new Multi Cassette Unit (MCU) option will enable greater automation using less space and up to 80% less power than comparable MCU’s available today.

How according to you can printers reshape their businesses by aligning commercial and environmental goals? Printers that align business and environmental goals are seeing long term benefits to the health of their business and the communities in which they operate. Offset printing, which has been the dominant printing technology for decades, is becoming more sustainable.

Printers are moving towards vegetable-based inks, alcohol-free solvents, and paper that is recycled or sustainably harvested. New press advances such as lowenergy UV technology, are helping printers reduce energy and waste during the printing process. Printing plates are made of aluminum and are fully recyclable, and more and more printers are switching to plates that don’t require any chemical processing, which not only reduces chemical usage, but saves water and energy as well. While these investments are certainly reducing the printer’s impact on the environment, they also increase the profitability and productivity of printers.

Do you believe use of renewable resources can pave way for sustainability? If yes, what initiatives has your company taken to make sure your products and solutions offer ecological benefits? Yes. From our process free plate technology to our CTP devices, our products are designed to help printers cut costs, eliminate waste, while improving the level of service they can offer. For example, the next generation of Kodak process free plate technology –SONORA UV – is designed to deliver all the environmental benefits while meeting the rigorous demands of UV print applications increasingly used by today’s packaging and commercial printers.

KBA Reports Growth in Packaging and Digital Printing Markets After a good start to the year in which Koenig & Bauer celebrates its 200th anniversary, the group is able to report favourable business performance in the second quarter of 2017. “The successful trade shows Print China in Beijing, interpack in Düsseldorf and METPACK in Essen contributed to a substantial yearon-year increase in order intake in packaging solutions for cardboard, metal decorating, marking and coding and glass and hollow container printing. Despite this growth and the expansion of service business, the order intake of €601.9m was slightly down on the previous year’s figure of €618.8m, which had been spurred by major security press orders,” explained CEO Claus Bolza-Schünemann. With group revenue dropping slightly to €538.9m compared with the previous year due to more deliveries in H2, the order backlog remained high at €620.5m.

Group earnings boosted by the substantial increase in Sheetfed profit

Order intake in the Sheetfed segment grew by 12.2% to €326.3m thanks to increased service business and more orders for mediumformat presses. The flatbed die-cutters for postprint processing of cardboard and corrugated also made a gratifying contribution to growth. Revenue rose by 5.5% from €291.7m in the previous year to €307.8m. The additional revenue with better margins and lower costs resulted in a substantial increase in segment profit to €12.1m (2016: €8.6m).

“In addition to the continued expansion of service business, profitable growth will be particularly driven by our existing and new solutions for printing, finishing and postpress processing of packaging as well as our industrial digital printing applications,” explained Dr Mathias Dähn. Claus Bolza-Schünemann mentioned the strong customer interest in the newly developed CS MetalCan solution for printing two-piece beverage cans. Sales launch is to

Despite the growth in orders for packaging printing solutions, new business in the Special segment dropped to €216.3m, down from €269.5m in the previous year, in which major security press contracts had been received. At €189.2m, segment revenue fell short of the previous year (€222.9m) due to more deliveries in H2. EBIT came to €14.6m, translating into a gratifying margin of 7.7%. The previous year’s figure of €22.1m had been influenced by a high

Increase in equity ratio to 32.6%

Despite the higher customer prepayments, cash flows from operating activities came to –€20m compared with the previous year’s figure of –€10.6m. In addition to higher inventories for the planned revenue growth in the second half of the year this was due to the increased receivables resulting from an accumulation of deliveries shortly before the end of the first half. Aside from higher capital spending, the free cash flow of –€65.5m was burdened by the first payment instalments of €32.4m for the external funding of a part of the pension provisions. With its funds of €127.5m, securities of €14.7m that can be liquidated at any time as well as the high cash and guarantee facilities, Koenig & Bauer has a stable funding base. The equity ratio rose relative to the slightly increased balance sheet total to 32.6% (end of 2016: 31.1%). The group workforce increased by 158 over the previous year to 5,359 employees as of 30 June. In addition to targeted recruiting in the service business and for new applications for the packaging and digital printing markets, 71 employees joined the group through the acquisition of KBA-Iberica Die Cutters for the growing die-cutter market.

EBIT came to €16.3m. “The previous year’s figure of €20.7m had been influenced by a strong catch-up effect in Q2 (€4.9m) from the execution of a large security press project and higher revenue,” said CFO Dr Mathias Dähn. The group net profit of €15.2m (2016: €17.2m) is equivalent to proportionate earnings per share of €0.93 (2016: €1.05).

Solid order intake of €85.7m was achieved in the Digital & Web segment. With revenue declining to €68.3m (2016: €75.5m), the order backlog rose from €92.3m to €93.6m. The EBIT of –€ 2.8m (2016: –€2.7m) came under pressure from KBA-Flexotecnica, which contributed a figure of –€3.1m.
