Addivant Earns Extended Food Contact Approval From China’s NHFPC Addivant, the world’s leading supplier of liquid phosphite antioxidants for plastics, announced today that China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) has expanded the usage limit for its nonylphenol-free stabilizer, WESTON 705, in polyethylene from 1500ppm to 2000ppm. “This increase confirms the safety profile of WESTON 705 and comes at an opportune time,” said John Steitz, Addivant’s CEO. “China has just started to enforce its new food-contact law, GB9685-2016, which puts a 10ppb migration limit on nonylphenol in foodcontact materials. With this extension, resin manufacturers can further increase the use of WESTON 705, allowing them to stabilize polyethylene for the most demanding process conditions while avoiding gel formation and additive blooming in flexible film.” Already approved for use in more than 180 countries for food-contact packaging, WESTON 705 is the only nonylphenol-free liquid phosphite antioxidant alternative with foodcontact approvals in the U.S., Canada,

Europe, and China. This enables resin producers and packaging manufacturers to employ a single, global solution for Consumer Packaged Goods for customers looking to stay ahead of the regulatory curve. The result of more than seven years of research and investment, WESTON 705 is the most thoroughly tested new plastic antioxidant on the market today. Addivant says that it is dedicated to Responsible Care, the chemical industry’s initiative to protect the environment; while ensuring the safety and security of the operations; and

safeguarding the health and safety of its employees and neighbouring communities. “The goal is to make continuous progress toward the vision of no accidents, injuries or harm to the environment. As active and responsible members of the communities, Addivant is committed to open communication with our employees and neighbors. The company monitors the safe production, transportation, and use of its products. Employees are comprehensively trained to do their jobs safely. We care about the future — for all of us,” said the company in a statement.

Flint Group Opens New Facility in Turkey

ME Printer December 2017

Flint Group continues its leadership position in the Packaging Inks segment with the opening of its new facility in the cosmopolitan district of Beylikduzu, in Istanbul, Turkey. This new 3800 square meter manufacturing and distribution facility is conveniently located only 13 kilometers from the main container terminal on the European side of Turkey and is well positioned for exports to surrounding markets in the Middle East.

4

Kim Melander, VP Sales EMEA and Global Strategy Paper & Board, says this, “Flint Group’s Paper & Board business has been a local supplier in Turkey and the neighbouring regions since 2008 and our team has been satisfying customers’ requirements

with state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities and expert local service for nearly 10 years. This additional investment not only solidifies Flint Group’s dedication to the Turkish market, but also confirms our promise to grow together with its customers in this key emerging market.” Krzysztof Struszczak, Operations Director Packaging Inks Eastern Europe adds, “The acquisition of this new facility was initially, and strategically, planned for Flint Group’s water-based Paper & Board business segment. However, it soon became clear that we should combine with other key segments supplying all needs of the Packaging market from this one location. Today, Flint

Group’s Narrow Web, Sheetfed, and Digital Solutions (Xeikon) businesses have joined Paper & Board in this single facility.” Melander continues, “Flint Group’s aim is, of course, to provide the best and most streamlined service and support to all customers. Many of our key customers purchase products from more than one of our segments. With this expansion in Istanbul, we now have the ability to satisfy the requirements of multiple aspects of our customers’ businesses under one roof, providing a unique ability to focus on key markets, but also share our knowledge across the full range of the package printing business.”

ALPS Seminar Held About How and When to Go Digital Association of Label Printers & Suppliers organized a seminar on “Going Digital - When & How” on 24th November at India Habitat Centre, Delhi. The main theme of the seminar was to have an open discussion on digital printing & finishing technology, discuss issues of moving towards digital printing and share latest invention, ideas & views of Industry Experts. The event was co-sponsored by HP, VINSAK and the FIG group and witnessed a record turnout of printers, converters and media dignitaries from Delhi/NCR. The seminar was commenced by opening speech of Guru Raj Ballarwad, President - ALPS who gave a warm welcome to all the visitors and have shared his views on how ALPS will be going to support the entire printing industry by starting magazines, organizing seminars and exhibitions, conferences, and so on. The Event was moderated by Ashish Gupta, MD of Rational Business Corporation, New Delhi. Gaurav Roy - FIG Group ha d given a presentation on how printers can enter Digital printing business, tackle the entry barriers and discussed various benefits of digital and inkjet printing. He shared a very interesting journey of an Indian Convertor from the late 1990’s to today and also talked about the role Mark Andy is play-

ing in offering affordable digital and hybrid solutions to the India market. Shamim Alam - Hewlett Packard (HP) gave a presentation on how printers can generate unique labels in Digital printing at optimized costing. He ha s also shared how big brands such as Coca-Cola or Oreo biscuits are using digital printing technology to create unique labels. Ranesh Bajaj - VINSAK India Pvt. Ltd had given a presentation on short-run inline converting & embellishments. He had shared his opinions on how to optimize digital finishing costs and save on turnaround time on short to medium run jobs. He gave emphasis on variable data personalization on wads, lottery tickets, scratch cards, etc. saying going digital

could mean by starting as small as adding a variable data printing head to the existing presses, finishing lines, and so on. The presentations were followed by an open and animated panel discussion where leading convertors like Sanjiv Sondi of Zircon, Harish Gupta of Sai Com Codes, S Prabhakar of Ikon Labels, Girender Kumar of Shree Ram Vertitech, all brought out their points of view in terms of the entry level barriers of the high cost of Industrial Digital equipment, high cost of running of digital vs conventional as well as the reluctance of the brands to pay the premium for Digital etc. The vendors tried to offer solutions and advise on these but a key thread to come out of the discussion was that unless both the convertors as well as the equipment suppliers join forces and work towards educating the brand owners and the packaging development teams of corporates, digital was going to be a hard sell.

ME Printer December 2017

A generous vote of thanks was proposed and delivered by Ajay Aggarwal of Syndicate Labels who is also, VP - ALPS. He lauded the efforts of the entire ALPS team including Arunesh Bansal, the Secretary of ALPS and the Executive Team in organising this interactive and informative evening. He also confirmed that subsequent events in the West and South of India are planned in the very near future.

Paperchase Error Sees Firm Print Diaries for Year 2108 Instead of 2018 £12 (AED 60) for the diaries, they will be sold at £9 (AED 45). And a holographic snakeskin with a light-up 2018, aimed at teenagers, was supposed to be sold at £16 (AED 80) but will instead be offered for £12 (AED 60). Paperchase has not revealed how many of the faulty diaries it has in stock but a conservative estimate of 10 of each design for its 130 UK stores would mean it has 6,500 to sell - although the true figure could be much higher. Estimates suggest the firm could lose around £20,800 (AED 102455) by selling the diaries at a discounted price. But it could save Paperchase a huge £85,000 (AED 418690) than if it were to destroy the diaries. Paperchase has admitted to being 'a little red faced' after the stationery firm printed the wrong year in its 2018 diaries. Several of the popular items show the year 2108 - 90 years in the future - from the middle of March onwards. Yet rather than repulping thousands of the misprinted diaries, the store has decided to slash 25 per cent off the price and sell them to customers.

ME Printer December 2017

In a message to customers, the stationery company said, “We don't want our customers to be disappointed in any way, but we also didn't think it was right to throw away lots of diaries that are otherwise still lovely and still useful. So we've made the decision to keep it on sale at a reduced price because otherwise it would be such a waste.”

World Record of Rotary Die-Cutting at 17,000 Sheets Per Hour

Between 29th November and 1st December, KBA-Sheetfed invited international print and finishing specialists to a series of Print & Postpress Innovation Days at the company’s facility in Radebeul near Dresden. Over 250 participants from 30 countries took the opportunity to gather information on the latest automation solutions for commercial, label and packaging printing, as well as innovative postpress solutions. Ralf Sammeck, CEO of KBA-Sheetfed and member of the executive board of Koenig & Bauer AG, welcomed the guests with a highly informative opening address, during which he spotlighted both the group’s new brand image and the future visions of Koenig & Bauer. Sascha Fischer, head of product management, then spoke in more detail about the further development of innovative solutions for an increasingly automated printing process.

ME Printer December 2017

That already begins with a new gen-

8

eration of plate changers with significantly reduced change times in half, medium and large formats, alongside the ability to load plates without prior bending of the rear edges. New measuring system options such as Print Check and PDF Check make use of a single, common camera system and guarantee absolute inspection and control precision. LED-UV dryers for Rapida sheetfed offset presses are now manufactured by KBA-Sheetfed itself, are even more finely adapted to the Rapida press series and thus offer even greater drying performance across all format classes, including also large formats. Autonomous printing with ErgoTronic AutoRun is about to be raised to a new level. “The future belongs to AutoPrint,” said Sascha Fischer – not least because the system will soon be able to program a complete job changeover itself, without any need for operator input. And the Rapida LiveApp, finally, is already in practical use in the field, with a further expanded scope

of features: The info panel with press status display and print job information, the maintenance manager and the consumables tracking module have been complemented with stock management controls and PressCall Mobile, a communication tool with chat functions for service and operator support purposes. During the subsequent practical session, Dirk Winkler, head of print technology, demonstrated the printing of labels and folding cartons on a six-colour Rapida 106 coater press with reel sheeter and a Vinfoil Micro cold foil module. The focus of his presentations was placed on the benefits of low-migration LED-UV production, the simple flexibility to incorporate cold foil application, and high-speed production at 20,000 sheets per hour both on reel-fed IML film and on cardboard and selfadhesive label substrates from a pile. On two eight-colour perfector presses for 4-over-4 production with subsequent coating, Winkler and Fischer provided impressive proof of the performance capabilities of the Rapida technology in commercial printing with conventional and LEDUV inks. The conventional press ran six sections of the latest customer magazine Koenig & Bauer Report, with fully automatic management of the entire job sequence by ErgoTronic AutoRun. As soon as the defined run length was reached – in this case 500 sheets – the next makeready process began automatically. PrintCheck and PDFCheck provided for continuous quality monitoring.

The LED-UV press produced six sections of the new Koenig & Bauer image brochure and, to conclude, a pencil box on folding carton board. Here, too, job changes were initiated automatically once the run length was reached, and the press subsequently returned to production without manual intervention. It was only the necessary substrate change for the last job which required manual intervention on the part of the operator. Under the claim “Ready for the next step”, Mario Gerber, senior sales manager for postpress solutions, introduced the rotary die-cutter Rapida RDC 106 as a “game-changer for the die-cutting process”. He explained the design features which are shared with a Rapida printing press and the various process steps which can be implemented in the individual towers. These range from die-cutting and hole punching for in-mould and other label applications, via emboss-

ing, creasing, cutting and stripping for the processing of packaging products, through to tailored variants for commercial users. The machines offer cutting outputs of up to 15,000 sheets per hour, depending on the substrate and the required contours, and can thus match the speed of a modern sheetfed-offset press. Productivity is increased by up to 300 per cent for label applications, and folding carton producers can also look forward to a 65 per cent increase in efficiency. The visitors were able to witness this superlative die-cutting performance for themselves during practical demonstrations on two Rapida RDC 106 rotary die-cutters. The four-unit machine began with a job requiring the creasing, cutting and stripping of a folding carton for pharmaceuticals. At the end of production, the machine was converted within just a few minutes for a completely different job, namely the pencil box printed during the morning session. Subsequent blanking was done offline on

a Master Blanker from Laserck with a throughput of up to 20,000 sheets per hour. The single-unit Rapida RDC 106 rounded off the day by processing the in mould and self-adhesive labels which had been printed on the sixcolour Rapida 106 with coater and cold foil module. Despite the tricky job change from classic die-cutting to kiss-cutting, the machine was back in production in next to no time. As the final highlight of the show, the Rapida RDC 106 then ran the self-adhesive label production at the world record speed of 17,000 sheets per hour. Partner companies Wink and Esko accompanied the event with specialist information on cutting plates and process-integrated workflows for packaging production. There were similarly plenty of opportunities to talk shop and discuss experiences with fellow users from other countries and even continents.

X-Rite eXact Family Supports New ISO Standard for Spot Color Tone Value X-Rite Incorporated, a global leader in color science and technology, and its subsidiary Pantone LLC, today announced that its awardwinning eXact family of handheld spectrophotometers now includes a Spot Color Tone Value (SCTV) feature that supports the latest ISO 20654 standard. The eXact SCTV configuration allows commercial and package printers to verify tone value for spot colors that correlate well with visual appearance. With this latest firmware update to the eXact family, printers will be able to more easily verify both spot and process colors that brands specify using the new standard. “X-Rite now provides SCTV support across our eXact family, IntelliTrax2 and ColorCert Suite 3.0 process control software, providing customers with the color management and workflow tools required to meet evolving industry standards, better formulate inks and take into account the effect of substrates on color,” said Ray Cheydleur, Printing and Imaging Product Portfolio Manager, X-Rite. “With X-Rite solutions, customers can feel confident they have the most accurate and consistent color measurement instruments on the market.”

What’s New in the eXact Family Today’s software update to eXact enables users to separately configure the tone value formula for spot colors as well as CMYK. Configurations are available for Tone Value, Tone Value Increase (TVI) or dot gain, TVI Table and Print Characteristics. This makes it easier for printers when measuring both spot colors and the process colors

used in extended color gamut printing. A new search function in eXact provides faster and easier access to color standards such as Pantone and apply them to a job. “X-Rite has added functionality for SCTV (Spot Colour Tone Value/ISO 20654) that can create equidistant visual appearance of tints aligned with PDF and Adobe and other creation software,” said Steve Smiley, Principle, SmileyColor and Associates LLC. “This allows for common appearance curve for spot color printing and alignment across digital print, proofing, flexo, offset and gravure. The X-Rite solution can be setup to always use traditional Murray-Davies for CMYK and SCTV for spot delivery as shown to the user in a single screen. As our industry is printing more spot and extended gamut work, the addition of SCTV will save time, waste and improve communications from design through print!”

What sort of technology and market trends have you seen in 2017? Digital printing is blurring the lines between the conventional printing segments. Take the case of offset and screen printing. In October of this year, GOA was excited when their registration data revealed a significant increase in registration over the previous year’s show. That 30% growth was great, but

would it hold steady all the way till the show in February. GOA could only hope. As expected, the number did not hold in December. What wasn’t expected was that it increased. As of December 8, 2017, GOA’s domestic attendance numbers have increased 46% over last year. Well Fort Lauderdale, it looks like Santa will not be the only one coming to town. So, what led to this holiday gift? What good deeds did GOA perform to warrant inclusion on the “NICE” list? Did they help an ol’ lady across the street? Did they return their shopping cart to the designated area? Did they recycle? Maybe? But their greatest deeds were when they decked their

expo hall with more than just boughs of holly. GOA concentrated on producing ways to increase the revenue of businesses and professionals in the graphics communications industry. They focused on upgraded seminars and a Hybrid Exhibit Floor to satisfy buyer attendee’s demands. groups that can be moved everywhere in-between the flexo stations according to the job to be printed. Rotogravure is the ideal cost-effective solution especially for solid printing, metallic inks and special varnish applications. Several successful installations all around the world prove the reliability and the high performance of OMET technology. Alfonso Melesi, OMET technical manager explains, "We designed also a few machines entirely prepared for solvent-base printing, other machines with one solvent-base flexo or rotogravure unit in-line for special color application, or exclusive projects featuring standard UV configuration with the addition of 2 rotogravure units, one in front and one at the end of the line. In this case, rotogravure technology is used to make compliant food packaging through solvent lamination, which doesn’t allow for ink migration.” The OMET Varyflex V2 is available with web width 430 mm (16”7/8), 530 mm (20”7/8), 670 mm (26”3/8), 850 mm (33”4/8) and confers the possibility to print with solvent-base flexo or rotogravure technology in the full compliance with international standards and Atex regulations in terms of explosion-proof equipment, which guarantees a safe working environment.

Workflow Solutions

for Packaging Print Koenig & Bauer and Esko, both global leaders in the field of packaging printing, recently agreed to further strengthen their partnership. To this end, colour management and workflow solutions from Esko were installed at the Koenig & Bauer demo centre in Radebeul and are available with immediate effect for live presentations to interested customers. As a solution provider to the packaging industry, Koenig & Bauer sees Esko as a strong partner when it comes to processintegrated workflow solutions. Accordingly, it is pleased to be able to show users the Equinox colour management technology, which enables printing with an extended colour gamut, with the necessary RIP architecture

being provided by Esko’s Imaging Engine. One of the benefits of an extended colour gamut is that printers are spared the constant wash-ups which accompany the use of spot colours. Job changeover processes are accelerated and extra production time is gained. This is an especially interesting option for packaging printers. A growing number of brand owners are today accepting the use of an extended colour gamut as an alternative to company- or product-specific spot colours. It is thus all the more important for both companies to present practically integrated pre-press and print solutions which meet the highest quality standards. After all, a wider gamut alone

is not sufficient; for the overall process, the absolute stability of all relevant parameters in print is also imperative. With its advanced measuring and control systems, Koenig & Bauer here offers ideal prerequisites for a stable process even over long runs and for repeat jobs. Packaging printers who come to the Koenig & Bauer customer centre can in future not only become acquainted with the latest print and finishing technologies, but also obtain a more comprehensive overview of the integrated process and the range of workflow solutions for packaging production. Esko will likewise be using the new presentation opportunities in Radebeul to inform its own customer base.

Guangzhou Hongda Tackles Heat Transfer Opportunity with Two Xeikon 3500 Digital Presses Xeikon announces that Chinese company Guangzhou Hongda, a leading provider of heat transfer labels in the Chinese market, is adding a second Xeikon 3500 digital press to accommodate growth in the digital portion of its business. The company has more than 20 years of experience in gravure printed transfer labels primarily serving the large toys market in China.

ME Printer December 2017

It was seeking a solution that would enable cost-effective production of shorter runs as well as provide an opportunity to expand into heat transfer segment through a newly created web-portal / network of printing partners. “We did stringent testing of various digital printing solutions available in the market and determined

28

that the Xeikon 3500 was the best choice for our business. Following our successful experience with the first press installed earlier this year, we are now in the process of adding a second Xeikon 3500, with plans to expand even more during 2018. We work closely with Xeikon’s team in China and their commitment, service and support played an important role in the successful implementation of our digital production capabilities,” explained Jiongda Chen, CEO of Guangzhou Hongda. Chen points out that key considerations in this decision included the high quality heat transfer labels the Xeikon 3500 press delivers and the FDA compliant dry toner, highly important for the toys market.

“We also appreciated the 50cm print width that allows for multiple up production, supported with Xeikon’s VariLane which makes it possible to create digital imposition templates for heat transfer labels with different SKUs and different sizes within the same print job. Xeikon’s high quality white ink is also important as this is critical for high quality heat transfer applications,” said Chen. Xeikon VariLane is an imposition software plug-in to the Xeikon X-800 digital front-end, specifically designed to allow label printers greater flexibility in the production of labels and increased profit opportunities. “Guangzhou Hongda has leveraged Xeikon’s print-on-demand capability for heat transfer labels by building a network of heat transfer converters who can order digitally printed heat transfer labels via a web portal,” commented Bent Serritslev, Managing Director Asia Pacific at Xeikon. “This has been successful in growing volume, as evidenced by the company’s acquisition of a second press. It is a pleasure to work with a company that is innovative and growing, and we look forward to our continuing relationship in 2018 and beyond.”

Hybrid Software Schedules Orders at Belgium Label Printer When the printing capacity at Accent Etiketten outstripped the ability of the company’s production scheduling software, the Belgium label printer called on the services of HYBRID Software. The solution came in the form of a customised production scheduling tool within the industry-leading workflow software CLOUDFLOW.

The family run business specialises in supplying self-adhesive labels to customers throughout Belgium, France and Holland. It employs more than 60 people and operates HP Indigo 6600 and 8800 digital presses as well as eight and ten-colour flexo presses. These are in use around the clock five days a week

and in addition to scheduling their workloads Accent Etiketten wanted to include its cutting and packaging facilities.Bert Van der Perre is Sales Manager Benelux at HYBRID Software and has been heavily involved in the project. “In the new environment, job information is sent from Accent Etiketten’s MIS system directly into CLOUDFLOW using XML files,” he says. “We set up a device manager within CLOUDFLOW to define the relevant details of each machine, providing parameters that include minimum run time, setup time, production speed, number of print stations, time to change rolls and cleanup time. The solution incorporates an ‘availability calendar’ that takes into account factors such as staff holidays, maintenance, potential for extra shifts etc.

“We operate HP Indigo digital presses and flexo presses,” explained Christophe Beke, quality assurance and project manager. “We had originally written our own software for scheduling jobs, which operated within the ERP environment and had performed quite adequately. However, recent investment in our press department meant that the workload demands had overtaken what our package could handle and we estimated that to rewrite it would

have taken us more than a year.” According to the company, instead, they started examining what was available on the market and when they looked at the products from HYBRID Software they were immediately interested in the company’s potential to meet their needs. "We liaised closely with its specialist team of developers in order to tailor its existing production scheduling tool to our particular requirements and this cooperation enabled us to reach our current position,” said Beke.

The Global 3D Printing Software and Services Market to Register a CAGR of 25.2% Between 2017 and 2021 3D printing companies have responded with a range of online 3D printing services that offer technologies catering to a wide range of uses. Their ultimate goal is to help the clients utilize the technology without investing substantial time and money into researching 3D design principals and 3D printing technologies for a particular business.

ME Printer December 2017

With the emergence of several new software in the category of design/ modeling, data preparation, simulation and machine control (which includes slicing software), there is a wide range of opportunities arriving in the 3D printing industry to design and implement various 3D printed objects. The global 3D printing software and services market is estimated to register a CAGR of 25.2% between 2017 and 2021.

30

This growth in the market is attributed to the increasing demand from various end use application verticals such as healthcare industry, consumer industry, automotive industry, fashion and aesthetics industry, aerospace & defense industry, education industry and architecture industry, among others. Manufacturers, designers, artisans and individuals are harnessing the cutting-edge technology of 3D printing and mass production to create objects for numerous applications.

While most of the consumer 3D printers can be purchased for $1000 or less, the cost of commercial 3D printers that offer the precision and build quality that many businesses need, can be as high as thousands of dollars. Hence, the current trend that is trailing in the 3D printing industry is that many of the small businesses are opting for 3D printing services, wherein they upload the design they need, and get the 3D printed products constructed by a 3D printing service provider (that already has a 3D printer) at a substantially low cost. In other words, service bureaus that 3D print objects on demand provide a way for smaller companies to rapidly prototype without having to invest large sums up front. Currently, most of the companies are providing print on demand services for various applications like rapid prototyping, concept modeling, and the creation of custom parts. The consumer base in this category includes hobbyists, academic institutions, research institutions, and so on.

3D printing has long been considered a tool to quickly design and make one-off prototypes of objects. However, as the technology is becoming more accessible, more affordable and more capable, it is beginning to redefine the way the manufacturing industry is framed. The 3D printing technology has brought a revolutionary change in the manufacturing industry. The growing market and the decrease in the price of the printers are some of the factors that are anticipated to give birth to some new competitors in the market. In addition, the innovative products that will be used as prototypes are expected to significantly reduce the price of 3D printing. Hence, it can be evidently deduced that 3D printing is going to significantly impact the upcoming future especially in regards to the way makers and manufacturers conduct their business. The establishment of 3DP within the manufacturing industry has resulted in high revenues for the service providers, as their primary business consists of delivering ready-to-use prototypes and products as well as 3DP engineering and consulting services. The principal advantage of using external service providers is that it allows clients to use different manufacturing technologies, as well as to save on capital expenditure for machines and materials.

Most of the consumer 3D printers can be purchased for $1000 or less; the cost of commercial 3D printers that offer the precision and build quality that many businesses need, can be as high as thousands of dollars. of Bazoom Studio, France was the winner of the 2017 FESPA World Wrap Masters Design Competition. The winning design was applied, by the world’s best vinyl installers in the Wrap Master Finals in Hamburg, to a speedboat used by the Haugaard Racing Team in the 2017 World Formula 4 UIM Powerboat Championship. Jonas Sjöström from Sweden held off competition from wrapping experts around the world to clinch this year’s FESPA World Wrap Masters Series, in what the organisation described as one of the tightest-run editions in the history of the competition. FESPA offers wrap specialists from around the world to showcase their talents in the annual World Wrap Masters, a series of regional competitions that culminate with a final event at the main FESPA global print expo, which is taking place from 15-18 May 2018 in Berlin, Germany.

Industrial Packaging Industry to Grow by 3.2% to 2022: Smithers Pira Exclusive data from the latest Smithers Pira market report ‘The Future of Industrial Packaging to 2022’ projects worldwide industrial packaging sales will be worth $52.72 billion in 2017. This value is forecast to grow across the next five years at an annual rate of 3.2% to reach $61.84 billion in 2022. The materials used to produce industrial packaging formats – sacks, IBCs, drums, crates/totes – are 14.56 million tonnes in 2017, this is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 2.7% across the same period to reach 16.62 million tonnes. Consumption increases will continue to be driven primarily by the faster-growing transition economies of Asia, Central & Eastern Europe and Africa, rather than the more mature advanced economies of Western Europe, North America and Japan. Despite this impression of stability, complex dynamics are acting to restructure the industrial packaging sector. The report author, David Platt, explains: “Gradual changes along the supply chain that have been

brought about by market and technology developments will have implications for the future of industrial packaging formats and markets. These include packaging, the Internet of Things (IoT) and the switch to dimensional weight pricing in the consumer parcel shipping business.” Flexible IBCs will register steady growth due to the advantages they offer in terms of efficiency, loading and unloading products. Overall, however, rigid industrial packaging containers are forecast to grow at a faster rate than flexible formats. Plastic drums will post aboveaverage gains based on cost and performance advantages over fibre and steel drums. In the industrial packaging sector, a key concern is the overall protection provided by the packaging, particularly when dealing with the transport of hazardous materials. Thus degree of substitution from steel to plastic drums for transportation of industrial products is limited because of safety regulations that apply to various hazardous products. In instances

where this switching is plausible, the relative cost of steel versus plastic remains the principal driver. Sustainability is gaining traction in the industrial packaging market, with mounting public pressure on governments, brand owners and retailers to reduce the environmental impact of packaging. The industry is continuing to focus on reuse and reconditioning of industrial packaging, rather than downgauging to cut its carbon footprint.
