It seems that the industry has become so focused on data-driven marketing, multichannel integration, and print-to-mobile technologies that we have forgetten the obvious. Sure, those things are important. But data, multichannel, and [channel]-to-mobile can be done in digital marketing, too. For 2018, why not focus on what print can do that digital marketing can’t? If your clients did that, what kind of results might they see? Read all about it, inside.

Koenig & Bauer Offers Inventory Management Through Smartphone App

ME‌Printer February 2018

The Rapida LiveApp with its info panel and maintenance manager functionalities has been on the market for around a year. Moving ahead, it is now to be expanded with the so-called ProductionApp as an indispensable assistant in the production environment.

6

practical users are already full of praise for the ProductionApp.

The following situation arises at some point in every print company: A necessary consumable such as an anti-foaming agent or washing solvent has run out. The stores are empty because a helper on a previous shift took the last bottle or container but neglected to mention this to anyone.

The basis for the app is the NFC function which is integrated into many smartphones. Use of this technology renders data acquisition in the production hall both simple and reliable. The ProductionApp workflow begins in the stores. The storage locations for the various consumables such as inks, coatings, blankets or powder are provided with an NFC tag. Within the app, subsequently, storage location tags can be assigned to any chosen article. The app then saves these assignments.

Koenig & Bauer has taken up the challenge of avoiding such annoying circumstances and has developed the ProductionApp as a powerful inventory management and batch tracking tool for use on mobile Android devices. The first

During an inventory check or after receiving a new consignment, the relevant article data are displayed for an individual storage location. The storeman can then compare the displayed quantities which those actually present. In case of

any differences, the numbers can be corrected very simply. The quantities of new incoming supplies are recorded. For any given article, therefore, current stock levels are reconciled and updated automatically (inventory management). This process is realised with the aid of the NFC function. As soon as the smartphone detects a store tag, the display and input forms are opened automatically. The app does not have to be started beforehand. At the press, assignments relate to the point of consumption, e.g. a particular printing unit, and are again controlled by way of NFC tags. The individual locations are assigned via the NFC setup. All relevant information about an article (colour, remaining quantity, etc.) is displayed on the smartphone directly at the place of consumption. The operator selects the quantity

which has been topped up or refilled, and scans the batch code of the consumable concerned.

aid of the app, capacities are freed up for meaningful and creative tasks.

The camera is activated automatically to scan the code, and the code itself is then displayed as soon as it is successfully detected. The operator can also view further useful information, e.g. when the article concerned must be refilled again or how much ink is required for the current job.

Benefits of the ProductionApp:

The troublesome monitoring of shop floor stocks and downtimes due to missing consumables become a thing of the past. With the

of

consumables

Inventory management for consumables Support for the tasks of the printers and helpers (indication of where something is to be done) Availability of a list of all consumables which were used in conjunction with a given job Besides batch tracking for inks, coatings and the like, it is also possible to monitor consumables such as blankets or blades. The app provides exact information on the number of impressions reached by the currently mounted blankets, for example. Target-actual service life comparisons are another possibility. If the blankets have exceeded the planned service life, this can be reported and visualised. In this way, tasks such as blanket changing or the refilling of powder

The app permits the definition of any number of storage locations, and the stocks at different or distributed storage locations can be summarised. A company thus maintains an exact overview of all stock levels at all times. In addition to the consumables for sheetfed offset presses, further products can also be integrated, e.g. the adhesive for a folder-gluer. Inventory management is greatly simplified with the ProductionApp, because it remembers the order of the shelf areas for each defined storage location. Only three prerequisites must be met in order to use the ProductionApp: One or more Android smartphones with the Rapida ProductionApp, LogoTronic Professional as the production management system, and a wireless network in the print company. Specialised advisers from Koenig & Bauer are on hand to assist process-specific set-up and commissioning.

ME‌Printer February 2018

The quantity refilled and the scanned batch number are saved in a database on a job-by-job basis, and the remaining stock levels are reduced accordingly. If the quantity in stock falls below a defined threshold, a corresponding e-mail is automatically sent to the responsible stores supervisor or to the purchasing department. The e-mail recipient can be set individually for each article. In this way, the necessary reordering process can be automated. An interface to a webshop is possible and also planned for the future.

Tracking batches

and washing solvents can be indicated and planned in advance. If consumption changes significantly, furthermore, the precise causes can be investigated.

Chinese computer consumable firm, Anycolor Computer Consumables Co Ltd, plans to establish a Kenyan manufacturing plant and an East African Marketing Center in 2018, an official has said. Anycolor is a hightech firm which engages in research,

Arecolor Kenya General Manager Xu Huanwen told Xinhua in Nairobi that they are seeking to establish a $10 million factory to produce printing consumables such as toner, ink, copy cartridges and power banks. "We are currently looking for an ideal site in the special economic zones that has the entire necessary infrastructure," Xu said. Arecolor currently has two factories in China and so the Kenyan facility will be the first overseas plant. The plant is expected to provide employment to over 300 locals and pro-

duce initially over 3.6 million toners cartridges, 6 million ink cartridges and 2 million powerbanks annually. The East African nation is a suitable location because it has lower production costs as compared to China as well as a large pool of skilled manpower. Xu said the rising costs of production in China has made the firm to seek to establish facilities outside of the Asian nation. He said that Africa is the future of the global manufacturing industry due to the continent's rapid economic growth. Arecolor also wants to help Kenya achieve its goal of expanding its manufacturing base that currently contributes approximately 10 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Apart from the exhibition, SGI Dubai played host to various events during its three day course. ‘Wall of Fame’ – a creative artwork competition saw participation from many of its recurring exhibitors. Blue Rhine took the winner’s trophy for Wall of Fame 2018 with its innovative glass based artwork. The runner up artwork belonged to Alpha Art, a Dubai based advertising and personalised gift and promotional material provider, while the 2nd

runner up was a creative piece of printing done by Wellcare Infotech. T-Shirt Printers at SGI 2018 By Dr. Nicholas Hellmuth of FLAAR Reports There were more T-shirt printers here at SGI 2018 than at three expos that I attended around the world during autumn and winter 2017. There were almost more booths with T-shirt printers (plus sublimation systems for coffee mugs) than there were booths with wide-format inkjet textile printers: but T-shirt printers were in abundance. Since I am interested in learning about inkjet and toner textile printers so I can provide information for print shops around the world, I was very happy to see about five booths with T-shirt printers at SGI 2018.

ME‌Printer February 2018

It is helpful to write about all brands, but the T-shirt operator in one brand’s booth said his printer could not print that afternoon. But booth personnel in four other T-shirt areas kindly

18

agreed to do test prints, so I report on the four that wanted to have test prints accomplished on their printers: Brother GTZ at the Signtrade booth OKI Toner Printer at the OKI booth Polyprint TexJet Shortee T-shirt Printer at the Copatra Graphics booth RICOH Ri 100 Printer at the MAGICTOUCH booth

You can print direct to the garment with pigmented ink or disperse dye. You can print on transfer paper with a toner printer or dye sublimation inks and heat press the image onto the T-shirt. In theory You can print onto transfer paper with dye sublimation ink (and put your T-shirt or bag or other item of cloth into a heat press)

There are many ways to print onto a T-shirt

Or print onto a polyester shirt with disperse dye ink and then sublimate that with heat.

First, is your T-shirt made of pure cotton, or pure polyester, or a mixture of the two fibers? Disperse dye sublimation inks need polyester; pigmented ink works fine on pure cotton.

But nowadays most desktop T-shirt printers use OKI toner printer (onto transfer paper) or pigment ink (direct to the fabric). Let’s now look at what is available here at SGI 2018.

Signtrade booth: Brother GTZ There are brother T-shirt printers at almost every sign expo around the world. There were two of the models of brother T-shirt printers in the booth of Signtrade. Here an oven-like system was used rather than a heat press. I was told that the oven is more effective for mass production, since a heat press can do only one-at-a-time. The oven had several drawers, so you can heat set several T-shirts at a time. I also assume you can open any drawer at any time even if another T-shirt is above or below? But this will need to be double-checked to be sure that the cold air which would enter if you open one drawer might not interfere with the heat treatment of the T-shirt above or below. Signtrade has, every year, the largest single booth space of any distributor. This is because they are distributor for Mimaki, swissqprint, and many dozen other product classes. Aiman Omar, Areas Sales Manager & Services

Technician of brother (in their German office) did the printing here at the expo in Dubai. Copatra Graphics: Polyprint TexJet Shortee In the booth of Copatra Graphics the hospitable managers kindly arranged the T-shirt printer staff to print an image with the polyprint TexJet shortee printer. The printer operator kindly make the image nice and large. Normally at a trade show the printer operators do not have time to size the image and so the image often turns out too small. In three years of doing test prints at an expo, this result from the printer operator in the Copatra Graphics booth was the best size produced so far. The normal workflow is to Pre-treat the shirt; Then print the shirt; Then heat set the shirt. You can use a heat press or a “T-shirt oven-like heater.” Every booth may use slightly different techniques and equipment. Occasionally no pre-treatment is used but 90% of the booth personnel do take the time to pre-treat the shirt material. In the Copatra booth they sprayed a chemical on the cloth and then used a roller to move it into the weave. They then printed the shirt, twice. I noticed this in most booths: they ran the shirt through twice in order to get enough color density. The MAGIC TOUCH, RICOH Ri 100 This was a brand new model. It had evidently been launched the week before at the Ricoh booth at CES. I attended CES but there was no inkjet area; no printer area. And if I remember correctly, Rioch was in a hotel; not in the main Las Vegas Convention Center. So I did not see the Ricoh Ri 100 printer at CES.

FOREVER section of OKI booth: OKI (Toner Printer) The FOREVER booth was several aisles away from the OKI booth; the team in the FOREVER booth also assisted. This connection: an experienced printer system: OKI and an equally capable sublimation, heat treating, pre-print and all the workflow steps of the FOREVER team was a great combination. Merely having a “T-shirt printer” is not enough if you are wanting to start from the beginning. Having all the knowledge from all aspects of decorating cloth is essential. Yasin Topcu is one of the FOREVER team. Nicolas Becherel knows T-shirt decoration inside out, plus is a patient and helpful person to teach you how to do T-shirt printing. So once again: merely having a booth with an isolated T-shirt printer on display is not a total solution. It helps significantly to have an inspired T-shirt printer operator who is patient in addition to knowing all aspects of toners, inks, sublimation, etc.

A T-shirt is a good example of visual communication: A T-shirt can be a sign (your corporate logo), or a personal expression of your style. For example, a T-shirt with a popular skull design is often a T-shirt for motorcycle riders. At FLAAR we use images of bird and animals from the rain forests of Guatemala. More than 15 graphic designers work for FLAAR and so there are plenty of T-shirt designs generated. We mention the visual communication aspect because there is a lot more at a “sign expo” than just signage. So T-shirt printers, 3D printers and many other products at SGI 2018 were visual communication, or (for 3D print samples of historical buildings from Mimaki) are great for museum exhibits.

T-shirt Printer booths usually have products for Coffee Mugs also FOREVER and several other booths had all the specially shaped heat presses for coffee mugs and comparable cylindrical objects. And experienced booth brands such as FOREVER, MAGICTOUCH, and comparable also tend to show woven bags as well as T-shirts and coffee mugs. So the same OKI printer, the same brother, Ricoh and polyprint printers can also do shopping bags, logo bags, and other items of cloth (as long as they are the size of a T-shirt and made of the right material to accept heat-pressed toner material). At SGI 2019 I look forward to doing test “prints” on coffee mugs and logo bags as well as bring better FLAAR designs for test printing on all available brands of T-shirt printers.

Anne Veldman, RICOH Europe, helped me learn about their new Ri 100 model the first day of SGI 2018 Dubai. Roel van der Ree did the printing for the video the final day of the expo. We appreciate their knowledge and hospitality.

This new model has lots of potential for families who want to get into hobby T-shirt printing and start-ups that want to learn from experience (but not with a super expensive system at the beginning). Another reason the RICOH Ri 100 is good for start-ups is its small footprint: it fits anywhere.

MENA Textile Printing Industry to Grow Bigger in 2018

ME‌Printer February 2018

International Expo Consults (IEC) part of Falak Holding, earmarked textile printing, digital signage, LED - the sectors to watch out for in 2018. The digital textile printing market is expected to grow at an impressive CAGR of more than 18% globally till 2021. SGI Dubai show caters to the needs of exhibitors and visitors in the LED and textile printing industries apart from signage, outdoor media, screen and digital printing industries. The show was held till January 16th at Halls 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 within the Dubai World Trade Centre.

20

“Some of the highlighted areas at the show to be considered were heat transfer technology, décor printing, digital textile printing, fabric printing and wall graphic among others,” said Sharif Rahman, CEO, International Expo Consults, organiser of SGI Dubai 2018.cEMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) commands a dominating position worldwide in the case of textile and clothing market and thereby occupies the largest share in the global digital textile printing market. UAE ‘s textile market is the second larg-

est trading market, next to oil; and is expected to further grow from 2017 - 2021 due to the lower cost of raw materials. This acceleration in the textile market is expected to grow the digital textile printing market in the 5-year period. “Advantages of LED lights over incandescent and fluorescent lamps are the foremost factor driving the LED lighting market growth. Additionally, the energy efficiency factor, increased brightness, and a larger lifespan are some of the major reason LED lighting enjoys tremendous market opportunities in the years to come. The never-ending cycle of new product launches utilising the most innovative technology by the manufacturers keeps the global population interested in the technology,” stated Rahman. According to a report, the global LED lighting market was valued at US$ 26.09 billion in 2016. The figure is expected to increase to US$ 54.28 Billion in another 6 years, accelerating at a CAGR of approximately 13% from 2017 to 2022. The Middle East and Africa region will also display significant growth in the near future.

Especially the U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia are expected to display conspicuous market share going forward. Another report highlighted that the GCC LED lighting market will witness a CAGR of 16.8% in the 2015 – 2020time period. Sales at the end of term would amount to US$1.9 billion. “2017 saw an increased consumption of video content, a factor that makes ignoring digital signage very risky. With advertisers creating engaging content which captures the imagination of the consumers, digital signage will play a huge role in promoting brands all over the world. The construction boom in the run upto Expo 2020 will also create demand in many commercial installations,” added Sharif.

The SGI Dubai 2018 show hosted several events during the three days including ‘Knowledge Series’ – a panel discussion involving some of the biggest names in the regional market; ‘Wall of Fame’ - competition for the most creative artwork of 2017 and ‘Masters of Wrap’ – a car wrapping competition in collaboration with Avery Dennison and Strings International. The event welcomed over 300 global exhibitors from across 35 countries around the world.

During the recent years, growth in the advertising space has given great business to the digital signage industry. Over the world, the growth of digital signage market is driven by the increasing demand

in the retail sector. Globally the segment is growing at a rate of 8.21% in the next 5 years. The spurt is primarily due to significant technological advancements complemented by dwindling manufacturing costs. An industry expert commented that country has witnessed roughly 25% growth in the previous year but is expected to grow rapidly to nearly 50% in the next three years, building up to the Expo 2020 event.

Training is led by industry-leading instructors through practical hands-on experience. Certification is good for 2 years.

In order to refresh and expand operators’ finishing knowledge and maximize their productivity, PMC ATL also now offers training on postpress equipment. Moebius explains that Heidelberg’s Postpress Application Specialist, Eberhard Weinzierl, offers three different courses: Power Basic Folding, Power Performance Signature Folding, and Power Commercial Folding. Each month, Weinzierl will teach one course for three days and cover both manual and automated folders. From February 20th to the 22nd, PMC ATL will be holding the next Power Performance Signature Folding class. This course allows participants to experience the impact of paper weight, grade and format on each of our three folders, from industrial to commercial, with specific emphasis on 16-page signatures. The class is focused on maximum take-home value for the operator – for example, fold preparation with scoring and perforating wheels and other high performance blades is discussed. Participants are encouraged to bring samples from their shops— this allows operators who run older or non-Stahlfolder equipment to gain a general knowledge that can be used every day.

AL GHURAIR PRINTING & PUBLISHING ACCELERATES DIGITAL PROFITS WITH THE XEROX® COLOR 1000i PRESS Technology has evolved rapidly over the past decade & the print industry has been quick to adapt to these trends. The power of digital printing offers a wealth of new opportunities for print service providers and is transforming the customer experience. It is now possible to print nearly anything from anywhere as digital printing is one of the most effective platforms that allows flexibility, enhances creativity and opens up new areas for revenue generation.

ME‌Printer February 2018

Founded in 1978, Al Ghurair Printing & Publishing LLC (AGPP) is the printing & publishing arm of the UAE’s leading business conglomerate ‘Al Ghurair Group’. With a key strength in book production which later diversified into magazines, newspapers, security printing & digital printing & packaging, AGPP has the largest printing and automated binding capacity in UAE. Using multi-colour sheet fed offset presses, web offset presses, highly automated binding lines, PVC card printing, braille embossing, security documents printing, hologram printing and all types of print finishing options under one-roof, AGPP produces high – volumes & supplies over 1000 tons of printed materials every month.

26

AGPP has been a valued customer of Xerox Emirates since the last 10 years & recently invested in the Xerox® Color 1000i Press and Xerox® Versant® 180 Digital Press. Both the two new presses have now enhanced their digital print capacity & gives them the ability to compete for lower volumes, short run digital jobs at competitive pricing. When asked about their reason for investment, Ganapathy

Lakshmanan, General Manager, AGPP explained, “Making proofs on actual paper and producing short runs with the same day turnaround was always a challenge 10 years ago and digital printing became the solution for this. The demand for short run digital printing has been growing at a rapid rate and we saw an opportunity to further enhance our offerings while radically improving both efficiency and profit margins. This led us to our first investment in the digital printing space with the purchase of the Xerox® 252 in 2008 followed by Xerox® iGen 4 Digital Production Press in 2012 which enabled us to do more at faster turnarounds & with a smaller footprint . A number of black and white digital printers were also added to our digital portfolio for print-

ing variable data/ barcodes/ QR codes in various kinds of forms/ ID cards/Coupons/Question Papers etc.” “Over the years, digital printing quality has reached quite close to offset printing and the costs have come down which has pushed the quantity threshold upwards for digital printing. At AGPP we offer a one stop print solution to all our customers whether their requirement is 1 print or millions of prints. Having a fleet of digital printing machines which can produce quality matching to offset has helped us to migrate most of the short-run and quick turnaround jobs to digital printing. Secondly digital machines have helped a lot in producing several copies of final product samples using actual materials to get approvals from customers before starting mass production. Thirdly for most of our security printing projects a

large number of forms/ packing labels are digitally produced with variable data including barcodes/ QR codes.”

Chris Govier, General Manager, Xerox Emirates said, “The digital print market is growing rapidly and digital printing plays a big role in the success of a commercial printer.

Quality production in a shorter time with a color print speed of up to 100 pages per minute on all paper stocks from a lightweight 55gsm to a hefty 350gsm, the Color 1000i Press makes producing quality prints a breeze.

Thirdly with a Full Service Maintenance Agreement (FSMA) in place, getting consumable supplies are hassle-free. We were impressed with the quality of digital printing and the additional 5th color such as clear varnish or gold/silver capability of the Xerox® Color 1000i Press.”

When AGPP decided to expand their offerings, Xerox Emirates worked closely with the team to understand their exact requirements and leveraged our experience, our suite of digital production presses & customized solutions to meet their needs. The Xerox® Color 1000i Press & Xerox® Versant 180 press was a natural fit, given the need for shorter runs & quicker turnarounds that would complement their current printing portfolio. We are delighted that AGPP continues to trust Xerox Emirates as a partner of choice to build their productivity powerhouse.”

“Though there are enough statistics to prove that there is a decline in demand for traditional print products, we have only grown continuously as we have been constantly expanding our market reach and product portfolio. We also see opportunities for further growth in the foreseeable future as the demand for secure documents, digital printing and packaging is only growing and we are continuously transforming our company aligning with the change in demand”, he concluded.

Chris also added, “Metallic inks on a digital press are still relatively new to the market and Xerox is the only vendor offering gold and silver metallic as well as clear dry ink in the same press. This suite of specialty dry inks offers plenty of runway for innovation by print providers, creatives, marketers and brand managers alike. Utilizing Xerox® low melt, Emulsion Aggregation (EA) Dry Ink and new fusing technology, Xerox® Color 1000i Press offers an even wider color gamut that can produce vibrant images with

He continued, “Unlike offset printing machines, digital printing machines require regular service support from the vendor and we are impressed with the unmatched service levels from Xerox support. Secondly Xerox machines are robust, reliable and can handle very high volumes of non-stop digital printing.

BOOST PRODUCTIVITY AND DRIVE MORE JOBS WITH THE XEROX® COLOR 1000i PRESS

PPS. Imaging Makes Renewed Investment in Xeikon 8500 German digital printer PPS. Imaging GmbH has invested in a Xeikon Wall Decoration Suite, including a Xeikon 8500 digital printing system with an X-800 front end and two CMS/ WMF wall-deco finishing units. The company took the decision towards the end of 2017 in order to service the growing creative market for personalised wallpaper for hotels, cafés, offices, trade shows, events and homes. Installation is due to be completed by the end of March 2018. “We believe that there is further growth opportunity in the interior design market,” says Axel Mausolf, Managing Director at PPS. Imaging GmbH. “Our recent takeover of klebefieber. de, an online shop for customised wall decoration and home design ideas, has provided us with a strong additional sales channel for products we can produce with the Xeikon Wall Decoration Suite. We create products using the wide variety of materials the machine can work with, offering an endless range of design possibilities that have a ‘wow’ factor, such as

turning a conference room into a wine cellar, antiquity-themed wall designs for museums, or a lounge that appears to be in the middle of a forest.”

wall covering solutions grew, the existing equipment was no longer able to cope with production capacity, and a second system was needed.

For PPS. Imaging, this is the second Xeikon 8500 one-pass-duplex solution in a four-colour configuration for single-sided or perfecting printing in a single pass. The company invested in its first Xeikon 8500 Wall Decoration Suite three years ago at Heimtextil, due to the higher productivity and increased volume it enables for this growth market. As demand for these

“We achieved very good results with the first press,” Mausolf says. “Its sophisticated technology and its reliability drove the decision to purchase the new finishing unit as an add-on for the existing press as well. We were aiming to increase service and parts inventory efficiency, as well as run both Xeikon digital printing systems to the same technical standards.”

Proof of Concept is Very Important Says Canon in this region is quite big and it is growing at a fast pace. We are also showcasing our new five-colour pigment machine which is the X series from ImagePROGRAF. This is again a new concept, because we are introducing CAD and graphics machine in one single product. And finally, we are also showing our new 64-inch indoor graphics machine - the PRO 6000. In a conversation with ME Printer, Ayman Ali, the Senior Marketing Manager for B2B at Canon Middle East says technology is not the most important thing. The way technology is used to deliver solutions is key.

What is Canon showcasing at SGI 2018?

At SGI 2018, we are continuing our approach of the new value proposition we have launched recently through our ONE Partner Program a few weeks ago. We want to focus on the customer journey. This is the trend we are seeing in the market and we as Canon want to move with it.

ME‌Printer February 2018

At SGI we are showing three new products for the first time in the Middle East region. These include new technologies and applications. We have the Canon OcĂŠ Colorado 1640, which is an outdoor roll-to-roll machine., This is our hero model, because we have seen that the outdoor signage market

32

Tell us about your concept of customer journey.

Our customer journey starts at the ideation stage and moves along the design, procurement and finally the production stage. At this stand at SGI 2018, Canon has all the technologies that can help us, for example, to print everything in this SGI stand using just Canon tech. Everything you see here at our SGI stands been produced using Canon technology. We have done this because we want to give credibility to everything we do, including our products and solutions. We are doing a lot more through our innovation center, such as printing, designing, and coming up with the final product. So from now on, all our events and participation at exhibitions will be done using our own solutions. We will not be using any sort of non-Canon solution or product to produce something we need for our events.

Ayman Ali

Is this because the market trend has changed in the region?

Well to some extent. The challenge is that most people are technology oriented. Even at this show for instance, you will see that most exhibitors are printing samples to show the quality and speed of their products. However, no one is focusing on how these technologies can be used to provide a solution - like a proof of concept. At our Canon stand we are doing that because our stand itself is a proof of what can be achieved by using our solutions and products. Around our stand we have four of our customers present such has Al Reyami, one customer from Jordan and another from Lebanon. These customers are using our technologies and they have innovative ideas that we want to share to the market through this event.

Take Print Where Digital Can't Go By Heidi TolliverWalker There has been a ton written on creative uses of direct mail. I write more on this topic than any other, it seems. What’s left? What is genuinely new and interesting that can be written to kick off the New Year? I’d like to offer a suggestion. It seems that we’ve become so focused on data-driven marketing, multichannel integration, and printto-mobile technologies that we can forget the obvious. Sure, those things are important. But data, multichannel, and [channel]-to-mobile can be done in digital marketing, too. For 2018, why not focus on what print can do that digital marketing can’t? If your clients did that, what kind of results might they see? Here are five of my favorites:

Dimension. Pretty much anything dimensional that lands in the mailbox is going to get opened. Find case studies using dimensional mail and get those metrics in front of your clients. Show how, for the right products and target audiences, a dimensional campaign could crush their typical campaign results. Create hypotheticals based on response rates, conversion rates, and dollars per sale. Interactive components. It used to be that printed

materials such as creative folds, pullouts, and pop-up elements were cost-prohibitive for small and mid-sized runs. However, the industry has been working steadily on creating template-based options that bring down the cost. Whether in-house or outsourced, consider offering truly interactive elements as part of your mix. Pull together results from case studies and create hypotheticals to show your clients what can be accomplished. Creative envelopes. Direct mail is more than the message inside the envelope. It starts with the envelope itself. It’s why AAA plasters its marketing message all over the front and back of its envelopes — benefits, calls to action, bulleted lists of free items — so that the recipient is exposed to the message whether they open the envelope or not. But other techniques—colored envelopes, teasers, dimension, faux elements (such as making envelopes look like FedEx, official government documents, or Air Mail)—can have a powerful impact, too. These tech-

niques have been used for decades by high-volume mailers, so why not bring them into the mix for your clients? Big mailers continue to use them because they work. Those results aren’t exclusive to them. Aroma. Aroma marketing is a rapidly growing field, and an increasing amount of research is being done on how aroma affects intent to purchase. Walk into many upscale clothing retailers and see what I mean. (Do you really think there is THAT much leather in that clothing store?) Scent marketing can be used in print, too. Touch the paper to release the scent, and aroma becomes part of the story. Aroma can comfort. It can excite and intrigue. It can spread “happy.” Even negative scents can have a powerful impact on intent to buy. Sight and sound. Think of print as an envelope that can carry more than documents. It can contain physical elements that create sound, light, and even video (embedded video screens). This is clearly not for every project, but for the right opportunities, experiment! Physical components cannot be used in digital marketing, and when they are used creatively, they can be highly effective and are unique to print. ME‌Printer February 2018

Print is more than a flat envelope. Sure, we need the right list, great targeting, and superior production quality. But print offers a multi-faceted experience. Why not make 2018 the year you encourage clients to take print where digital cannot go?

Global Packaging Services Market to Reach $50 Billion in 2022 ing to increased sales. It also helps building a converter’s own brand as a service provider and gives an advantage against competition. Moreover it can become a revenue stream of its own. Evolution of this type is being driven by a series of braoder technical and markey developments examined in the Smithers study. Smithers Pira latest market report “The Future of Business Models in Packaging to 2022” estimates the value for packaging services in 2017 is worth $33.7 billion, and by 2022 will be worth $50 billion, increasing at a compound annual growth rate of 9.5%. The packaging industry may be traditional and still circle around the same materials – glass, paper and fibreboard, plastics, wood, and metal – but at the same time innovative business models are increasingly providing the catalyst to explore new materials, markets, and highvalue market applications.

ME‌Printer February 2018

The packaging services analysed and quantified in The Future of Business Models in Packaging to 2022 are packaging design, materials testing, contract packing, predictive maintenance, and consumer research. Contract packing is by far the largest segment, with 70% of the value. The priorities for packaging services vary along the value chain, and the positions are not fixed. Vertical development of the business model is normal where services that traditionally belong in another step are integrated in the offering. A typical example of a vertical business model is the packaging converter that also offers design services.

34

Packaging converters often have the skills and equipment in house, or hire the skills needed for setting up a design studio when offering design services. It is a straightforward way to add value to customers – and can be a win-win if the result is an upgraded design lead-

These include: E-commerce, which is growing very fast and changes the way consumers shop. It adds convenience, an unlimited product range to choose from and a transparency that people appreciate. It also changes how brand owners interact with consumers. Digital printing as a maturing technology is changing how firms can communicate with consumers, and is a means to personalise products. Smart and intelligent packaging opens a wide range of new possibilities for the packaging industry and for brand owners. Contract packing is not a new concept, but it fits well with deeper collaboration across the value chain, and can deliver major coast savings. Industry 4.0 will also change the packaging business and it will be necessary for organisations to get on board utilising the benefits from automation, data exchange, IoT, and communicating robots on

the factory floor and in distribution chains. Analysing Big Data – such as sensor data for temperature, vibration, rotation speed – means packaging companies will be able to improve and rationalise; implementing predictive, rather than reactive, maintenance and service. Simultaneously twinning this with smart consumer-facing pack formats will give brands new leverage to engage with customers via personalised promotions. The market position for many of these emergent technologies is still fluid, creating a premium for new business models that can marry innovation and entrepreneurship. The market for materials testing will be shaped by new materials, biomaterials, and new technology. New materials for new ideas requires new thinking. Material testing is an important step when selecting new materials for packaging. With the test results customers can compare materials and select the most suitable application. Smithers Pira’s latest market study ‘The Future of Business Models in Packaging to 2022’ provides an overview of packaging business models, with a look at the value chain. The study also offers the key players as well as in-depth analysis on the key drivers, trends, consumer demands and opportunities for new service offerings.

Fulfilling the Demand for Value for Money Products ME Printer speaks to Mathias Militzer, Vice President - META Region, OKI Europe about the company’s participation at SGI Dubai 2018 Can you tell us what you plan to achieve through your participation at SGI Dubai 2018?

This year, OKI is using a different approach than last year. Last year we have shown our new products to the market. This year we have focused on how our products can be used to provide solutions to our customers. Out whole focus at the event is on how OKI can help the regional print and graphic arts industry by offering specified and customised solutions that can provide unique and tailor made solutions to our customers.

Which industry verticals are you focusing on?

We have introduced models that show all the possibilities on what can be achieved by using OKI machines - for example, in the retail sector. These include banners, stickers, panels, papers,

wrapping, and so on. This is our approach. We provide printing solutions for all industry verticals be it retail, banking, and so on.

is very different from that of the healthcare industry. That is why we need to have an answer to these kinds of customer needs.

Have you introduced any new products through the show?

The print and graphic arts industry is growing at a fast pace in the region. I can see that the demand for LED printers is growing due to the fact these printers are much more stable and robust. These machines are also very sustainable.

We are this year showcaing a mix of new products and existing products. When it comes to new products, we are showcasing the new label printer from OKI., which is very flexible and unique. We are also focusing on how we can help our partners help their customers to make their lives easier.

What kinds of market trends have you seen in the region?

More of our customers are going for dedicated and customised solutions. They want to have their special demands fulfilled. This is because, a print job in a bank

Also the entry sector in the office market is shrinking. It is becoming very challenging for companies to justify that a printer costs for instance $100, while a set of new toners cost $150.

Mathias Militzer

Customers are demanding more value for money products. They seek better products that offer high quality at competitive prices. And that is the market OKI wants to focus upon.

Middle East Children’s Toy Sector is on an Upward Track The Middle East toys and games market, valued at US$3.5 billion in 2017, will be on an upward track in 2018, with the UAE at the forefront of consumer spending on items such as action figures, arts and crafts, plush toys, puzzles, sport equipment, and pre-school products.

ME‌Printer February 2018

According to analysts Euromonitor International (EMI), a growing population coupled with a strong performing tourism sector will put the retail value of toys and games in the Middle East at US$4 billion this year, with the UAE accounting for a quarter of the market (US$1 billion).

36

into surrounding regional countries. Melissa & Doug (M&D) is one of more than 300 exhibitors from 42 countries at the upcoming Paperworld Middle East 2018 exhibition, which takes place from 27 February – 1 March at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The US manufacturer is among the top 15 global toy companies, and is returning for the second year running at the dedicated Playworld Village, lining up alongside dozens of other international toy-specific exhibitors.

The Gulf country is also among the world’s biggest spenders per capita; EMI estimates the 2017 UAE per household spend on toys and games was US$590, with this growing to US$625 in 2018, placing it well ahead of more developed countries such as Japan (US$344 expected per household spend in 2018), USA (US$441), Germany (US$174) Italy (US$138) Spain (US$188), and the UK (US$399).

With a vast children’s product range found throughout the world, M&D launches on average more than 100 products every year, all of which will be on show at the Playworld Village in 2018. David Postlethwaite, Vice President at M&D in the Middle East & Asia, said there’re opportunities everywhere for his business in the Middle East, with not a lot of variation between kids’ preferences.

With a retail value of US$983 million in 2017, the UAE children’s toy sector is ripe for the picking, and international manufacturers are eagerly expanding their presence in the country and further afield

“Wherever I’ve been in the world with the M&D brand, kids are kids,” said Postlethwaite, adding the company is still looking to expand its customer base in the Middle East. “They simply want to

have fun with a toy. As parents, the decisions we make in the buying process is guided by many factors; advertisement, price, size, age, gender, and skill. The significance parents place on each of these factors changes from market to market. Thankfully, M&D ticks many boxes and we’ve had incredible success across the Middle East because of this.” Postlethwaite said customers can find the M&D brand throughout the region in traditional toy retailers, department stores, gift shops, clothing stores, and card shops. He added: “We believe wholeheartedly in the child being at the centre of the toy, and we’re always looking to promote creativity by having play at the heart of everything we do. From role play and pretend play to arts and crafts and puzzles, we’re always looking to feed imaginations with the toys we create.”

Other headline names at the Playworld Village include Ty, the world’s largest plush manufacturer; and German companies Karaloon, a market leader for high quality latex balloons, and Spiegelburg, a Children’s Book Publisher. Party Camel from the UAE, which specialises in all things party related, and Sarmadee from Palestine, which designs and manufactures educational toys, will also be part of the dedicated section.

The retail value for children’s toys and games in the Middle East includes traditional toys and games (plush toys, dolls, action figures and related accessories, remote control toys, puzzles, games, and children’s party items), and video game hardware and software. According to EMI, traditional toys and games comprised 60 percent of the Middle East market in 2017 (US$2.1 billion), with video game hardware and software accounting for US$1.4 billon. Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East, the organiser of Paperworld Middle East, said: “The tendency of UAE and Middle East consumers to spend freely on acquiring toys and games is what is driving international interest in the region, and that’s also clearly re-

flected in Paperworld Middle East’s dedicated Playworld Village this year. “While the market continues to be driven by leading international brands, there’s a growing niche for local and regional players with specialised products catering to regional preferences.” New features at Paperworld Middle East 2018 include The Green Room, a dedicated section for environmentally friendly products with ‘eco-credentials; and Corporate Gifts, for promotional items. A series of one-day seminars highlighting the latest industry trends and developments will also be staged for the first time. Returning features include Wrap Star, the region's only gift wrapping competition. Paperworld Middle East is colocated with Leatherworld Middle East, the region’s premier showcase of leather goods, accessories and supplies.

ME‌Printer February 2018

Katrin Gille, Managing Partner for Karaloon, said the company is now just entering the regional market: “Karaloon has had some requests for our products from Middle East countries and so we’ve since started the GCC certification of our balloons,” she said. “At Paperworld Middle East, we’ll introduce the high quality and safe brand for balloons for the Gulf countries, and we’ll show some new 2018 animal designs such as the Flamingo,

Lama, Owl and Sloth, which have become very popular in recent months.”

Here Are the Major Tech Advancements in UV Curing You Should Know About According to The Future of Radiation Curing Print Markets to 2022, print produced using radiation curing (UV and electron beam) inks and varnishes in 2017 totalled roughly 1.38 trillion A4 prints, a value of $63.4 billion. The market is growing at around 2-3% annually in tonnage terms. With ink revenues growing faster than the overall graphics and packaging market, users are taking advantage of instant drying to improve their production efficiencies and exploit both decorative and functional properties of the inks and coatings.

ME‌Printer February 2018

Radiation curing not only saves time by instant drying but it also enables various efficiencies across a wider production process. While print

38

volumes in graphics generally is falling by 3.0% per year between 2012 and 2022, the radiation curing print segments of this, and the still booming packaging market, are poised to expand market share. Radiation curing volume will grow by 25.0% by volume and 33.6% in value terms across this period. Smithers Pira identifies the key developments in ink and varnish formulation and curing technologies that are underpinning this expansion. Low-energy UV Curing UV curing methods are changing. The majority of ultraviolet drying in 2017 is still carried out using mercury vapour quartz lamps, but these take time to warm up and there are potential health and environmental

hazards at end-of-life. These limitations are amplifying the benefits of low-energy curing. This curing system is designed to dry the print using much less energy than the traditional mercury vapour lamps, with a single mercury doped lamp. The system uses special inks that command a premium over the traditional UV curing inks and varnishes. These lamps do not emit the shorter UV wavelengths that generate ozone, removing the need for ozone extraction. They produce less waste heat, so require less cooling, which further reduces the power consumption. The technology is now being taken up in North America and Europe.

Low-energy curing can be used on perfecting presses with two lamps to dry each side, and Komori has commercial web presses using H-UV technology instead of a hot air oven, thus reducing the press footprint – which is important in its home market of Japan, where the very high cost real estate make space saving potentially a significant cost advantage. UV LED Curing UV LED curing uses light-emitting diodes that emit a narrow band of UV, delivering a peak of UV energy, which provide a broad distribution of output across the spectrum, including visible and infrared. LED curing offers even less energy than the low-energy mercury bulb UV systems, and there is an instant on-off, which can reduce further the downtime required in waiting for the lamps to come to full power, as well as providing significant energy savings through synchronisation of cure with ink laydown. The drawback is limited availability of suitable inks, and the high cost premium currently associated with them. The range of UV LEDs commercially available is growing, shadowing LEDs wider use in general lighting installations. Printers that are already using UV LED are reporting energy consumption as much as 70% lower than conventional UV systems. Another attraction of UV LED systems is their colour brilliance, stemming from higher pigment content. UV LED is moving beyond niche applications into higher-volume segments in some European countries, such as sheetfed printing, where the technology has the advantage of being able to provide high colour strength. Electron beam curing Electron beam curing uses a high-powered electron beam to initiate the free radical polymerisation reaction.

There are developments to broaden its use through lower-cost and smaller EB curing units, including for the first sheetfed processes, and ink technology to broaden the use on flexo and gravure presses. The proportion of electron beam in radiation curing remains low, at just 4–5% in 2017, with most in North America and lower elsewhere. Low migration inks and coating As radiation curing is widely used in food, pharmaceutical and tobacco packaging, it is important that no components can migrate from the print into the product and cause any organoleptic effects. This is particularly important in tobacco packaging, where the criteria for odour-free and migration-proof packaging are driven by the fact that tobacco is hygroscopic. Odour and taint are potential issues for all converters. Ink manufacturers are formulating low-migration inks using selected components, which should ensure that migration from the resultant printing ink film will be within accepted migration limits. Ink formulators may choose components from the known range of approved ingredients, or choose the new classes of materials becoming available that offer inherently lower potential contamination. This issue

is now being approached via new legislation announced in 2017 in the EU, and other markets like Japan. Hybrid inks Several ink manufacturers are exploring new methods of formulating inks to broaden the range of applications for UV and electron beam inks and to improve their performance on press. In flexible packaging on common impression flexo presses there is limited space for interdeck drying, and ink manufacturers are developing UV and EB curing inks with water or solvents. These act as diluents, and there is a degree of evaporation at the print stage that enables improved wet-on-wet trapping. There are developments in water-based electron beam gravure printing, for example IdeOn at Amgraph Packaging in Connecticut uses water as a diluent for electron beam-curable gravure inks. A significant advantage of these hybrid inks is that they are not classified as hazardous materials, which traditional 100% solid UV inks and coatings are. This means manufacturers do not have to apply a hazardous chemical label onto the pack, and they can be transported in bulk – whereas a UV ink categorised as hazardous cannot be transported in a container larger than 25 litres. The Future of Radiation Curing Print Markets to 2022 provides quantitative market sizes for the major technologies in radiation curing globally, forecasting the markets to 2022 by curing, method print process, and end use application.

ME‌Printer February 2018

A curtain of accelerated electrons is emitted towards the printed surface, in an evacuated chamber. The energetic electrons pass through a titanium window foil towards the wet ink, the energy is absorbed by the ink layer and the curing process takes place. The benefit of the

technology is the penetration of electrons into the body of the inkfilm, rather than just at the surface, ensuring good through-curing. It is widely used in the Americas on wide web presses, but less so in Europe.
