Grafotisak Uses Push to Stop Concept From Heidelberg for Book Production Burda, Egmont, Disney, Harper Collins, and Gyldendal. The other ten percent of production is split between security printing of duty stamps for alcohol or cigarettes, folding cartons and lever arch file production. “Quality through time – we’ve achieved rapid growth in the print shop with this motto,” explains Marko Vranješ, son of the owner and Technical Director. “We replace our machines every five years so that we’re always up to date and can deliver the best to our discerning customers.” The group’s growth last year was 12 percent, and the goal for 2018 is up to seven percent. According to Wikipedia, the town of Grude in Bosnia and Herzegovina is home to four large companies: an ice cream factory, one of the biggest toilet paper factories in Europe, a brewery, and a printing company. In fact, it may come as a surprise that Grafotisak incorporates a state-of-the-art print shop and warehouses for merchandise on a total area of over 26,000 m2.

ME‌Printer March 2018

Owner and Managing Director Stipan Vranješ is from Grude, and established the company in 1983. Grafotisak has gradually developed into a Group with 600 employees and a total of ten sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia. Half of its sales comes from school, office and graphics supplies, while the other half comes from print production of books and the corresponding logistics distribution.

6

Books account for 90 percent of the printing company’s production, and are delivered to fifteen European countries. The export share is 80 percent. Grafotisak delivered 25 million books in 2017, and expects a ten percent increase this year. To cope with this, last year the company invested in a Speedmaster XL 106 from the latest drupa generation and a Suprasetter 106 CtP platesetter, as well as in Prinect modules for the integration of postpress. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) supplied everything from a single source, including intensive advice in advance. Grafotisak’s customers are well-known publishers like Taschen,

To be able to handle all this, Grafotisak needs reliable and innovative partners. “We’ve trusted in Heidelberg from the beginning, and know that they will listen to us and supply us,” confirms Marko Vranješ. And so it is once again with the new Speedmaster XL 106 eight-color press with perfecting and a speed of 18,000 sheets per hour. This press is fully equipped with AutoPlate XL, Wallscreen, and Prinect Inpress Control 2, and works according to the Push to Stop concept in which the operator only intervenes to change plates or stop the press. “We can now have up to 30 jobs processed automatically, and in some cases are twice as fast as on the other presses,” explains Marko Vranješ. Over 27 million sheets have already been printed since production started in July 2017.

The pressroom now houses a total of 48 printing units from Heidelberg, including one Speedmaster XL 162 press, five Speedmaster XL 106 presses, one Speedmaster XL 75 press, and two Speedmaster SM 52 presses. The last big investment was in 2015, with a package consisting of the Speedmaster XL 162-8-P and a Suprasetter 162. This enables a book with 32 or 64 pages to be produced on one sheet. The current investment package also includes the first Suprasetter 106 worldwide, which images 55 plates per hour (pph). Up to now, the limit was 40 pph. It is a complete Suprasetter line with Auto Pallet Loader 106 K, Dual Cassette Loader with turn table, Glunz & Jensen Interplater 85 HDX, and a NELA bending line with two stacking stations and plate sorting. The Suprasetter thus fits seamlessly into the Push to Stop concept, in which the imaged plates are brought directly to the machines and each job is assigned appropriately.

Xerox Named as one of World’s Most Ethical Companies for 12th Consecutive Year Xerox has been recognized by the Ethisphere Institute, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices, as one of the 2018 World’s Most Ethical Companies. Xerox has been recognized every year since 2006 and is one of only two honorees in the Information Technology Services industry, underscoring their commitment to leading with integrity and prioritizing ethical business practices.

transparency, diversity and inclusion were all priorities for honorees. “Every decision we make and every action we take should demonstrate our unwavering commitment to ethical business conduct,” said Xerox CEO Jeff Jacobson. “Our continued recognition by Ethisphere is a reflection of that promise.” “Global corporations operating with a common rule of law are now society’s strongest voice to improve the human condition. This year we saw companies increasingly finding their voice. The World’s Most Ethical Companies in particular continued to show exemplary leadership,” explained Ethisphere CEO Timothy Erblich.

In 2018, 135 honorees were recognized, spanning 23 countries and 57 industries. The twelfth class of honorees had record levels of involvement with their stakeholders and their communities around the world. Measuring and improving culture, leading authentically and committing to

The World's Most Ethical Companies assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics Quotient framework, which offers a quantitative way to assess a company’s performance in aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics. Scores are generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (corporate citizenship and responsibility), culture of ethics, governance and leadership, innovation and reputation.

Lab in Jordan Prints Limbs for Kids and Those Wounded in War Iraqi soldier Abdullah lost his left hand fighting Daesh (ISIS) but now he has a prosthetic one – thanks to a 3-D printing lab in Jordan. Abdullah was wounded in a mine blast as Iraqi forces battled to oust the extremists from Iraq’s second city Mosul last year. His right hand was also seriously wounded. The 22-year-old is one of a group of Iraqi, Syrian and Yemeni amputees to benefit from a 3-D printing prosthetics clinic at a hospital run by the medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF). “It’s not easy to replace a hand, but at least the new device gives me some autonomy and means I don’t rely too much on my brother to eat,” said Abdullah, who asked not to use his real name. Wearing jeans and a dark green shirt, he said he had been transferred from Mosul to a hospital in the Iraqi Kurdish regional capital Irbil before heading to Jordan. “Now I feel better,” he said, managing a small smile. “I hope I can heal my right hand too.” The 3-D printing technique allows the team to create simple upper limbs without moving parts, slashing the costs of manufacturing advanced, custom-made prosthetic limbs, according to MSF. The MSF Foundation, a wing of the charity dedicated to research and development, set up a prosthetics production center in Jordan’s Irbid last June.

A team of medics and technicians use the technique to help people born with genetic deformations as well as war wounded from across the region.

Asil Abu Ayada, who is from the Gaza camp northwest of Amman. She lives with five brothers and her parents in a mud house, and was born without a right hand.

Doctors start by taking photos and measurements and sending them to the laboratory in Irbid, 100 kilometers north of Amman. The data is entered into a system that designers use to create a virtual model of the limb, which is then printed and sent to MSF’s Al-Mowasah hospital in Amman for fitting.

With her new prosthetic hand, she can now go to a normal school and even sketch drawings.

Several organizations have developed 3-D printing for amputees in recent years, but MSF says its project is a first in the Middle East. The clinic aims to give orthopedic care to as many people as possible affected by the region’s conflicts.

ME‌Printer March 2018

Project coordinator Pierre Moreau said it had treated 15 Syrians, Iraqis, Yemenis, Palestinians and Jordanians since its launch.

8

“We chose Jordan because we have one of the biggest hospitals and most advanced, and it is a stable place in the middle of a war region so we have access to patients from Syria, Iraq and Yemen,” he said in English. It has also benefitted people born with deformities, such as 7-year-old Palestinian refugee

Too shy to speak to reporters, she sat manicuring her artificial fingers with the help of her sister Ines. The 3-D devices range in cost from $20 and $50 – a fraction of the cost of conventional prosthetic devices, which can cost thousands of dollars. “You can design something that can suit this patient and is very specific to the activi ty of the patient,” Moreau said. The new technique was developed by MSF in collaboration with “Fab Lab,” a digital manufacturing laboratory in Jordan. Another beneficiary was Ibrahim alMahamid, from Deraa in southern Syria, who suffered injuries to his left hand in a bombing raid in 2013. A 33-year-old taxi driver, Mahamid had the hand amputated at a field hospital in Syria before moving to Jordan. “The new prosthesis has given me hope to be able to go back to work and take care of family expenses,” he said.

EFI Lays Out a Plan for Capturing the Growth of Print By Rosemarie Monaco At EFI Connect 2018 (Las Vegas, 23-26 Jan) EFI CEO Guy Gecht presented his analysis of the evolution of print and then laid out the path that leads to growth. “Print is growing,” he stressed, “despite rumors to the contrary.” To prove the point, Gecht offered statistics revealing the continued growth of traditional print. Annual direct-mail spending grew from $41 billion in 2012 to $76 billion in 2017. He then pointed to the $1 billion+ spend on the 2016 U.S. election campaigns. He also presented surveys that showed the changing preferences for reading printed books, a significant change from the past trend toward e-books.

Enabling Platforms The platforms that will allow us to reap the benefits of the fourth industrial revolution are inkjet and smart automation. Why inkjet? “Because you don’t need to touch it,” said Gecht. In addition to the new levels of automation and speed achievable with inkjet technology, inkjet heads can be mounted and to fit any surface or structure, making inkjet far more versatile. The newest technology, such as EFI’s LED systems can print on any surface from sliver-thin film to thick glass. And EFI’s Reggiani and VUTEk FabriVU textile printers print on a wide range of fabrics as well as on fabric transfer paper.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution “We are in the fourth industrial revolution—where print will get even stronger,” said Gecht. If we look back at the first three, we can see that every one of them was driven by technology— technology that shortened distances, reduced labor, improved economies and forever changed the way we communicate. We went from trains and planes to telegraphs and telephones to computers and mobile devices.

Why smart automation? Because printers that don’t need hands-on supervision to print at high quality save money and time, boosting profits. Automation software allows us to integrate a variety of printing technologies into a single workflow. The automation is smart when it knows how to setup a job, impose, communicate with inline finishing, eliminate waste, consume less energy and ink, and provide data for sharper estimating and better customer care.

“This revolution,” Gecht explained, “is fully fueled by three phenomena—artificial intelligence, virtual reality and personalization.” Artificial intelligence (AI) is a no-brainer, he suggested. The enablers of AI are inextricably established—we have big data from which to draw, ubiquitous (cloud-based) computing power and powerfully fast processing speeds at the device.

New printers for graphic display printers fall into this category. The EFI VUTEk HS F4 printers are high-speed hybrid roll/flatbed 3.2-meter wide printers for outdoor and distant-view applications outputting boards at speeds up to 225 boards per hour. The new VUTEk FabriVU 340i adds inline fixation to

Products supporting growth markets Those familiar with EFI’s portfolio know that it is rich with technology that addresses many of these markets. But the company offered additional evidence that it will continue to follow growth markets. Fiery DFE’s are a prime example of processing technology specifically designed to tackle textile printers as well as packaging and industrial presses. EFI offered another glance into a new digital sector—industrial building materials. The company is leveraging its Cretaprint (ceramic tile printers) innovation to develop new end-to-end systems for printing on wood, concrete and other surfaces. Leveraging traditional growth EFI offered statistics regarding the growth of direct mail. Along with this encouraging news, the company announced MarketDirect. It is a “customer engagement platform” which gives users the ability to develop, distribute and track customer communications for loyalty programs, offers, newsletters, surveys and communications. Rosemarie Monaco is a consultant and writer specializing in the printing industry. Her articles have been published around the world.

ME‌Printer March 2018

Virtual reality makes absolute sense. Consider repurposing your game goggles to view a hands-on demo of a room-sized printing press. Plus, virtual reality aids in manufacturing processes and enables real-time, remote equipment maintenance. “Personalization,” said Gecht “is a major driver of print. The trend toward personalization extends beyond paper to include apparel, corrugated boxes and building materials.” These categories are important. They provide doorways to new markets.

Speed for fast turnaround The need for fast turnaround was a clear message at Connect—from EFI marketing experts as well as customers. Keep in mind that at this event, EFI customers come from around the world to see what’s new, and to exchange war stories and secrets of success. The EFI Fiery FASTRIP accelerates productivity by processing nine times faster than other production rips. Unquestionably, EFI is pumping up throughput with faster speeds at the engine and higher processing power at the front end.

EFI’s popular soft signage printer. The 3.4-meter wide machine offers production speeds of 250 square meters per hour, fully sublimated inline at engine speed.

Double A Shows the Way for Sustainable Paper Production A Thai company is taking a lead role in eco-friendly paper manufacturing, producing 600,000 tons of pulp and one million tons of paper annually that not only protects natural resources, but provides additional income for more than one million Thai farmers in the process.

ME‌Printer March 2018

Thailand’s Double A believes that sustainability and paper go hand in hand, and has based its business model on producing a special strain of paper tree on the thousands of otherwise unused hectares of ‘KHAN-NA’ lands that border the South East Asian country’s numerous rice paddies.

12

Since its inception in 1991, Double A knew that to be successful, it must co-exist with the environment, but according to Senior Executive Vice President Thirawit Leetavorn, the key was sourcing the right raw material, while also preserving Thailand’s rich natural biodiversity and supporting surrounding local communities.

“For more than 25 years, we tested some 2,500 trees to find the right tree most suited to Thailand’s climate and that also produces the highest quality wood pulp,” said Leetavorn. “The result is our propriety Double A Paper-Tree which yields a large quantity of trees every 3-5 years and requires little maintenance. Each sheet of Double A paper is made from this tree which is cultivated on vacant KHAN-NA strips of land along farmers’ rice paddies. Leetavorn added: “We’ve maintained its premium quality paper products and recently extended our product range wider with Office supplies and Stationery products under the reliable Double A brand, keeping the utmost quality commitment to serve our customers.” Double A showcased its green credentials and entire range of sustainable paper and stationery products at the Paperworld

Middle East exhibition, which took place from 27 February – 1 March at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The company is one of dozens of global paper manufacturers at the region’s largest trade fair for paper, office supplies, and stationery products, which will feature more than 300 exhibitors from 42 countries when it opens for business in its 8th edition next week. Leetavorn said with each ream of Double A paper produced, re-cultivation of raw material is done to ensure the availability of sustainable fibre in the future. “Our concept of producing paper from KHAN-NA farmed trees originated from innovation of sustainable sourcing, co-existing with rice paddies in the Thai context. We soon realised that 43 per cent, or 22 million hectares, of Thailand is agricultural land, but not everything is utilised, such as the KHAN-NA space between the rice paddies,” he added.

“Double A Paper from the KHANNA model provides us with a sustainable source of raw materials, while protecting natural forests and providing substantial additional income for more than one million Thai farming families. This model ensures we’re not taking land away from food production, and enables us to use natural resources sustainably.” Double A Paper from the KHANNA model is recognised by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), while Mr. Leetavorn said the manufacturer also converts all its waste from the pulping process, oversized wood chips and tree barks into biomass fuel. This ensures a self-sufficient manufacturing process which produces electricity for the local power plant, and in turn fuels the mill and supplies energy to support 400,000 people in communities around the mill. The company has stringent water consumption practices as well, “Our 35 million cubic meter reservoir, Emerald Lake, collects rainfall and conserves water during rainy seasons,” added Leetavorn.

“This water is used for our mills and trees as well as local communities and factories. Additionally, we squeeze excess water out of the paper pulp during the manufacturing process to be recycled. We also use a special dry process for making wood chip and we leverage technology to minimise water consumption.” Other leading specialised paper manufacturers at Paperworld Middle East 2018 include The Navigator Company from Portugal, NGR from the UAE, Modern Union Paper Products from Bahrain, and French-based Beaumont Group. The three-day event is organised by Messe Frankfurt Middle East, and arrives in 2018 with new features such as the Green Room, a dedicated section for environmentally friendly products with ‘eco-credentials; Playworld Village, spanning the entire gamut of children’s toys and games; and Corporate Gifts for promotional items. A two-day seminar programme will also highlight the latest trends and developments in the

regional office, paper, and stationery industries. Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East, said: “As Paperworld Middle East continues to evolve as the premier trade event for paper and office products, it continues to reflect the latest innovations and trends that prevail in the industry and provides regional buyers with a preview of how the industry will look like in the future. “Sustainable and ecologically friendly means of paper production as well as the other innovative products on view at the Green Room, demonstrate the new and greener course being plotted by the industry.”

La Rochette Dakar Has Trusted BOBST for More Than 35 Years A transformational leader in industrial packaging in Senegal, La Rochette Dakar, covers 80% of its country’s demand for corrugated cardboard boxes. In April 2017, the company installed a DISCOVERY FFG 8.20 gluer in its Dakar plant (see sidebar below). Developed by Bobst Lyon, this machine allows four-color flexographic printing and in-line folding-gluing. This equipment is especially suited to the company’s needs, because of its ease of use and very high performance (its production can reach 18,000 boxes per hour). It assembles American boxes in one pass, using corrugated cardboard sheets.

Increased quality and production capacity

Buying the DISCOVERY FFG 8.20 marks a new era in La Rochette Dakar’s industrial strategy (see the interview with its director, below) and completes its fleet of machines, which already includes a BOBST FFG 924 NT gluer purchased in July 2016. Since this highly automated equipment was put into service last spring, the package quality and production have increased considerably: 1. The production rate has increased 50% and reduced delays between the corrugation shops and the box plant. 2. The forming quality (printing, trimming and gluing) has improved significantly. 3. Four-color printing has offered the company a chance to develop new types of packaging.

Modernization and development

14

At its production site in Dakar, spanning more than 50,000 m², the 245-employee Senegalese company focuses on industrial packaging and printing. Its activities include producing American corrugated cardboard boxes, converting flexible boxes, paper bags for Kraft and self-adhesive labels, along with printing of publish-

ing products (brochures, planners, posters, leaflets, flyers, calendars, and so on). La Rochette Dakar actively pursues a strategy of modernizing its production equipment. Since 2016, it has been growing and making large investments in its plant. It has bought an in-line corrugator and two BOBST gluers, and sent an order to the Swiss company for a new Autoplatine VISIONCUT 106 LER die-cutter in July 2017. Like other countries in Africa, Senegal hopes to export more products, especially to Europe. Packaging plays a strategic role in access to these new markets: Packaging for food products and commodities must meet very strict international sanitary, phytosanitary and traceability standards. Thanks to BOBST technology, La Rochette Dakar has acquired high-end equipment to speed its growth and play a key role in Africa’s packaging industry. Now La Rochette Dakar is the packaging industry leader in Senegal and the entire West African region. Its exports are growing full tilt, especially to Mali, Guinea, Gabon, and recently to Gambia and Mauritania. Number one in packaging in Senegal, La Rochette Dakar opened its plant in 1946. Originally called the “Colonial Packaging Company”, the company

took its current name in 1960. A Senegalese family group bought the company in 1983. For more than 35 years, it has collaborated with BOBST to modernize its production site in Dakar, equipping a quality control laboratory and acquiring high-tech machines for transforming cardboard and paper. La Rochette Dakar has more than 1,000 customers, including several large international brands, and works in industries as varied as tobacco, agrifood, pharmaceuticals and telecommunications. This technological development has allowed them to include companies as demanding as Philip Morris International and Nestlé among its production customers. In 10 years, the company has evolved from a local to an international supplier. Modernizing its production site has allowed La Rochette Dakar to produce packaging and printing with strong added value. These high-quality, sophisticated products require printing with special varnishes, embossing and special trimming. Complex assembly processes are now possible thanks to the latest-generation machines’ repeatability and register control functions. Today, La Rochette Dakar has become a factory of reference, where its customers experiment with new products before launching them on the market.

United States Air Force Selects Xerox’s Managed Print Services In an effort to gain transparency, security and cost efficiency in its document management, the United States Air Force has turned to Xerox to optimize all aspects of its document environment – including print, scan and fax – as well as provide a help desk and management of servers to deliver a comprehensive document infrastructure. Over the next year, Xerox will replace all Air Force devices with Xerox multifunction devices and take over management of the fleet. Over the course of the following

four years, Xerox will decrease the number of government-owned devices by up to 2,000 units, effectively saving the government more than 20 percent in costs. Historically, each Air Force squadron was responsible for making its own print decisions which did not allow for the efficiencies of centralized management. Xerox will provide a staff of on-site Xerox personnel to be located between the Pentagon, Joint Base Andrews and Joint Base Anacostia-Boiling. Support staff will manage the

The company has now introduced bar codes to optimize its production. The special feature of this bar code is, however, that it not only contains an encrypted ID, but also the individual format of each book.

The company recently equipped its two existing POLAR 78 XT highspeed cutters with bar code readers to optimize cutting of the individual

books. Raphael Kacimi, Head of Production at BuBu, explains the starting point for this project: “As we offer a very wide range of formats, we wanted to have an individual cutting program for each product. As we already have two POLAR high-speed cutters in operation, we discussed our requirements with POLAR. It

quickly became apparent that we would be able to upgrade our existing equipment. The additional bar code DI-function completely fulfilled our expectations. Today I can say that we have enhanced the process reliability considerably, the error quota is zero. We have also become more flexible.”

ME‌Printer March 2018

When it was founded in 2004, bookfactory.ch was a pioneer in the photo book production market. Its credo at the time - that still applies today - is efficient production of individual books. Although customers of bookfactory.ch also acquire a standard book, the company’s actual competence is customized production of high-quality books. These are hallmarked by special covers, finishes and unusual formats. This not only requires comprehensive know-how, but also great skill and craftsmanship.

ME‌Printer March 2018

In 2018, SinoCorrugated South will continue a long and successful tradition, which firstly began with the show’s inaugural edition in 2001, of offering corrugated manufacturers and suppliers some of their most productive innovations and new business development opportunities, strongly backed by the world’s most influential industry associations, including Federation of Corrugated Box

16

Manufacturers of India (FCBM), the Asian Corrugated Case Association (ACCA), Perhimpunan Industry Corrugated Cardboard Indonesia (PICCI), the Malaysian Corrugated Carton Manufacturers Association (MACCMA), the Corrugated Box Manufacturers Association (CBMA, Singapore), the Hong Kong Corrugated Paper Manufacturers' Association (HKCPMA), the Korean Corrugated Packaging Case Industry Association (KCCA), La Cámara Argentina de Fabricantes

de Cartón Corrugado (CAFCCO), the All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP) and many more. Reed Exhibitions has extended its promotional reach by cultivating close relations with multiple industry and trade associations since early editions of its platform. Today, the SinoCorrugated series, which comprises two shows –in even years in Dongguan and in odd years in Shanghai – has grown into a highlight of the industry’s calendar both at home and abroad. The sustained year-on-year growth of both events results largely from a consistent and strong support of these influential industry bodies. Along with them, Reed Exhibitions has devoted itself for ages in making great contributions to the development of the global corrugated industry. Several associations have pledged to organize delegations to visit SinoCorrugated South next year. Many have also cited how, as longstanding participants in SinoCorrugated events, they always appreciate the wide range of products on display and the way the show generates strong results that enhance members’ understanding of new industry trends, while they evaluate emerging innovations and solutions.

Dating back to its last edition, more than 30 international associations sent over 2,000 delegates to visit SinoCorrugated 2017 in Shanghai. Expected onsite at the 2018 edition will be industry delegations from bodies like FCBM, ACCA, PICCI, MACCMA, CBMA, HKCPMA, KCCA and AIFMP. The endorsement and active support of these top executives will bring once again considerable purchasing power to SinoCorrugated South 2018. Additionally, the 33,000 local and international visitors expected at the show will include government figures and industry professionals from the private sector. The alongside-held seminars and workshops will feature key industry thought leaders, speakers and visionaries, all at one platform. Everyone at the show will have an access to evaluating the latest innovations, ideas and solutions from across the converting world. “Reed remains deeply committed to driving development in China’s corrugated industry, which is why we are preparing SinoCorrugated South 2018 to specifically address challenges found in carton manufacturing and processing. While pursuing our goal of shining a spotlight on the advanced and sustainable corrugated processing solutions of the future, we rely on the strong spirit of cooperation and friendship that thrives between us and our strong backup within the industry. Through a combination of resources, Reed Exhibitions and its industry trade channels across Asia provide enriching opportunities and robust platforms to manufacturers in the paper, printing and converting in-

dustry,” said Thomas Huang, Senior Vice President of Reed Exhibitions Greater China. In parallel, Reed is also running Roadshows within Asia-Pacific regions, which entails a series of meetings with representatives from key associations within the converting industry. The campaign, which is focused on promoting SinoCorrugated South 2018 to regional corrugating markets and connecting local manufacturers with emerging industry areas, has reached a wide audience over the past. In addition to that, Reed was proud to host the 1st Asian Corrugated

Industry Summit concurrently with the 21st ACCA Management Committee (Sep. 25-27). Moreover, the company will send representatives to the 46th FCBM Conference in India (Nov. 17-19), the MACCMA Annual Meeting (Nov. 16-18) and HKCPMA’s Annual Meeting (Nov. 23-25). Later on this year, Reed will host the Indonesia Corrugated Summit as well as the Myanmar Corrugated Industry Summit (Dec. 3-7) through a collaboration with PICCI and the local association respectively. Alongside the summit, local manufacturers will be taken on guided tours to visit corrugating factories in Jakarta, Surabaya and Yangon.

ME‌Printer March 2018

Next year, SinoCorrugated South will be held from 10 to 12 April at the GD Modern International Exhibition Center in Guangdong, the heart of the Pearl-River Delta and driving force of China’s packaging industry. Participants in this event are assured of joining a dynamic global platform which will feature new products, advanced technologies and innovative service solutions – all of which are integral to get along with the rapidly changing demand in today’s corrugated packaging industry.

ME‌Printer March 2018

Environmentally friendly stationery and office supplies made their Middle East debut at a Dubai exhibition, from recycled ‘plant-able’ pencils, to ‘vegan’ artist brushes used to renovate Italy’s Sistine Chapel. The Green Room at Paperworld Middle East 2018 threw the spotlight on environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable stationery and paper-based products, where all items point to a bright eco-oriented society.

18

The dedicated show feature reflected a clear shift in regional consumer patterns where there’s greater emphasis and demand for environmentally and socially responsible paper, stationery, toys, and office products. And trade buyers from across the region eager to source sustainable products were not disappointed when they visit the Green Room at Paperworld Middle East, which took place from 27 February – 1 March 2018 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. A marquee attraction at the bustling three-day event, the Green

Ghulam Hussein, Founder of Al Hasananat Trading, the regional distributor for Treewise, said its pencil is world’s first newspaper pencil that comes with a of no breakage guarantee while writing or sharpening: “There’s absolutely no plastic or wood used in our pencils and hence they’re produced without any carbon foot print,” said Hussein. Hussein said Treewise was also showcasing its ‘Recycled Plantable Pencils’, which can be planted after use, growing into different plants such as tomato, chilly and coriander. “We aim to convert nearly 500,000 newspapers into a direct tangible sustainable product, and we’ve heavily invested in technology to cater to demands from worldwide markets,” added Hussein. “The UAE leadership and across the Middle East is encouraging the use of sustainable products and our belief is that sustainability can start with a pencil. Our aim is to save our trees one pencil at a time.”

Borciani e Bonazzi from Italy is a specialist manufacture of fine art brushes, and another Paperworld Middle East exhibitor, who showcased its ecologically oriented Italia 1951 brushes at the Green Room. Maurizio Arletti, Borciani e Bonazzi’s Export Manager, said this brush, and its patented Unico brushes are widely used by artists and painters and preferred

for a wide variety of restoration projects. These include many of the most important monuments and works of art in Italy, such as restoration work carried out both at Rome and Florence for the Jubilee, along with the massive restoration of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. “The Italia 1951 brushes are made with green vegan synthetic fibre which are resistant over time, comprising recyclable aluminium anodised ferrules, and with a non-toxic water-based colour finish,” said Arletti. “The packaging is made of recycled solvent-free materials and is 100 percent manufactured with renewable energy. This collection not only involves an eco-friendly commitment, but is also created to celebrate a country, its history and the birth of Borciani e Bonazzi.” Added Arletti: “We want to show our products in a different market and acquire Middle East distributors. Thanks to our new designs and innovative techniques, we’ve products which can satisfy the most demanding consumers. All Middle East countries are full of history and art, so we think it won't be hard to enter in this strategic market.” Other eco-conscious products on show at the Green Room included recycled hardcover notebooks and colouring pencils made from certified wood

from Portuguese manufacturer Olmar. Olmar’s CEO João Oliveira said: “We’re working to provide a range of product options that are affordable, high-quality and that build trust with our customers. That’s why we put our efforts to combine sustainability with products that protect and respect the environment. We produce products for kids that are the future of the world and recycling is the correct behaviour to achieve that. We truly believe that going green with our business is the way we should take.”

Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East, the organiser of Paperworld Middle East,

“The Green Room allows retailers, department stores, schools, and stationery dealers from across the Middle East a first-hand look at a range of environmentally appropriate stationery and paperbased products, the likes of which are new to the region, but which shows the direction to where the market is headed,” he added. New features at Paperworld Middle East 2018 include Playworld Village, spanning the entire gamut of children’s toys and games; and Corporate Gifts for promotional items. A two-day seminar programme will also highlight the latest trends and developments in the regional office, paper, and stationery industries. Returning features include Wrap Star, the region’s only gift wrapping competition. Paperworld Middle East is co-located with Leatherworld Middle East, the region’s premier showcase of leather goods, accessories and supplies.

ME‌Printer March 2018

Paperworld Middle East is the region’s dedicated trade fair for paper, office supplies, stationery, corporate gifts, and children’s toys and games, and will feature more than 300 exhibitors from 42 countries in its 8th edition in 2018. Other exhibitors featured in the Green Room include UAE companies Alpha Art Gifts and Jasani; Global Notes from Germany; Polish manufacturer WZ Eurocopert; The Navigator Company from Portugal; and Thailand’s Double A.

Foldfactory Launches Exciting New Line of Pre-Cut Paper Craft Products

Foldfactory has announced the launch of a new business segment, Foldfactory CRAFT. The consumerfocused business is designed to address the needs of paper crafters and busy moms through creative precut paper card forms and shapes in an array of bright colors. “I never dreamed I’d be using my folding knowledge in the crafting industry,” says Trish Witkowski, President of Foldfactory, “but we recognized the opportunity, studied the market with in-person focus groups, one-on-ones with moms, Girl Scout leaders and card crafters -- and realized there are problems we could solve for crafters - and with my knowledge of the print industry, we knew exactly who to call.” First, a strategic partnership was developed with Highcon Systems. The idea was to laser cut the shapes and card forms to ensure the ultimate in flexibility for the product line, in terms of design, responsiveness and the ability to produce limited-edition themes whenever we needed them.

ME‌Printer March 2018

The Highcon team was enthusiastic about the venture and keen to see how their digital cutting and creasing

22

technology could answer the Foldfactory CRAFT requirements. The first tests were carried out on the Highcon Euclid III at the Komori Graphic Technology Center in Chicago and then produced by Boutwell Owens & Co. Inc., Highcon customer in Fitchburg MA, users of both the Euclid and the new Highcon Beam machines. Trish also reached out to Neenah Paper to play a critical role in the Foldfactory CRAFT product line. “I wanted to bring fresh and exciting colors to the paper crafting industry. I looked at everything, but I kept coming back to the Neenah Astrobrights line. The bold, saturated colors tested really well in focus groups, and the quality and texture was perfect for paper craft. I chose 10 of the 25 available colors to start, but there’s so much room to grow, which is exciting.” Witkowski adds that the color, quality and texture of the paper were not the only deciding factors—responsible US manufacturing and recycled content was also important to her. “I think consumers appreciate responsible manufacturing and environmental awareness, and the Astrobrights line simply had it all.”

The launch line features 8 card forms paired with a signature confettispeckled envelope and 8 different punch-out shape themes in an array of 10 bright colors. All products are laser-cut, or cut and creased, however Witkowski believes that in time they’ll also venture into print. “We see lots of opportunity for adding print to the line extension, but not through a web-to-print portal like the B2B side of our business. Crafters cut and layer printed sheets of decorative paper in their projects and in time we expect to develop our own innovative spin on printed layering products, too. The new Foldfactory CRAFT will also require an aggressive content and social media schedule. “As you can imagine, you can’t just start posting DIY paper crafts to Foldfactory’s B2B audience of designers, printers and production pros,” adds Witkowski. “The audiences are very different, so we’ll be launching separate YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest channels as well. For those who are wondering about Fold of the Week, she adds “I’ll definitely still be shooting Fold of the Week. It’s not going anywhere.”

Manroland Web Systems Presents the New Press for Flexible Packaging Printing VARIOMAN is the name given to the newly conceived packaging printing press from manroland web systems. VARIOMAN means that manroland web systems has created a technology platform which combines the benefits of varied technologies and processes while specifically avoiding the weak points inherent in other technologies and simultaneously providing top customer benefits.

and total solutions provider for the print industry has created a technology, which specifically avoids the weak points inherent in other processes: the mixture of offset and gravure here, provides particularly short make ready and changeover times with reduced start-up waste rates, achieved through high levels of automation and format flexibility.

The pilot press is an offset gravure hybrid press, which prints foils and provides the proven core competences of the Augsburg printing system like mature design, system integration and service and maintenance packages. This new packaging printing press, the VARIOMAN f:line, will be presented before numerous customers and interested parties from around the globe from 27th of February until 1st of March in Augsburg.

manroland web systems’ VARIOMAN f:line is ideal for printing flexible foils for Shrink-Sleeve applications as well as for a further array of substrates, like foils, paper and aluminium foils. The VARIOMAN hereby fits perfectly in the production gap of medium sized print runs with excellent offset printing technology and the cost benefits inherent in this technology. The special offset printing units have been developed with the cooperation partner Goebel GmbH.

What customer benefits does the new technology bring? manroland web systems has based the VARIOMAN f:line on its decades of experience in offset printing and has connected this with the most modern automation. The strongly performing business partner

This translates to the highest levels of flexibility for the customer; very important in modern packaging printing, which must meet the present day demands of numerous job changeovers, short runs with many sub-jobs and a plethora of “on demand” print runs. Time

is saved and costs are minimised thanks to the highest degree of modern automation in printing, direct from the house of manroland web systems. At the same time, the combination of technologies like the degree of variability and particularly the quality of the printed product from the offset side, with the benefits provided by gravure printing e.g. in the areas of varnishing, adhesives and opaque white, are important factors for the packaging printing of today and the differentiation that a modern printing house requires from its offerings. A comprehensive, all-round, worry-free service package is a further assurance of the presses availability throughout its entire service lifetime. From 27th of February until 1st of March, customers from all over the world can convince themselves of the performance and benefits of the VARIOMAN, live. Within the framework of the three day event, the system, its’ technical equipment and technological superiority will not merely be discussed but demonstrated as well, in a live printing demo.

MCT Offers New VersaTech2 Flatbed Laser Only Solution into their own, and early adopters, mainly from the Screen Print market, who had been successfully using I-cut encouraged their new found grand format printer manufacturers to integrate with digital finishing to allow them to become even more productive.

MCT’s Co-founder and Chairman, Steen Mikkelsen, has said that the marketplace today feels much like it did when he first introduced i-cut to the early grand format UV printing market in the early 2000s. At that time, such printers were finally beginning to come

Steen says that, “2018 has this same feeling. As I travel the country, I am seeing the same kind of acceptance for digitally printed fabrics as we saw in 2001 for vinyl and rigid materials, and everybody indicating they need a laser cutter to successfully achieve a profitable fabric operation.” While MCT’s VersaTech2 Laser has been quite successful in the upper tier of this marketplace, it did

not offer an entry level solution for that market. Therefore, MCT has decided to streamline its solution, without giving up any of the performance of its new “horizontal” Laser and provide a laser only system at an attractive price starting at $169,000 with a 100-watt water-cooled Americanmade laser. These systems will also be capable of being upgraded to full VersaTech2 solutions at a later date, allowing buyers to take advantage of what they need today, but still expand their options later on systems that last well over 10 years in the field. MCT will begin selling these solutions immediately with deliveries in 8-12 weeks after receipt of order.

Middle East Printing Market to Witness Robust Growth in 2018 how to serve the growing market demand for personalized, seasonal and customized products.

The total value for printing in the Middle East will be worth more than $20 billion for the first time in 2018 as the market continues to grow and transform. The latest data was drawn from exclusive research conducted for the Smithers Pira report entitled “The Future of Global Printing to 2022.” This is testament to the fact that the Middle East is still a relatively immature market for the consumption of printed media.

ME‌Printer March 2018

Although many Middle Eastern consumers will follow the general global trend of adopting electronic alternative to traditional print media – like newspapers and magazines – there is still scope for in other segments, like printed packaging. With a positive business landscape on the horizon, commercial print and package printing stakeholders from around the region gathered to discuss latest industry trends and how to sustain future growth at the first Gulf Print and Pack Summit at Dubai’s Roda Al Bustan Hotel on 4-5 March 2018.

30

The conference agenda for the summit was packed with day one presentations focusing on market trends and new technologies. The keynote presentation was delivered by Chris Lynch of platinum sponsor Xerox Middle East and Africa alongside Atlas Printing Press’ Amit Radia. Highlighting how digital print technology can transform the business of printing, they examined investing and installing digital equipment, how to reduce production costs whilst improving print quality and

The opening day also featured a high-level CEO printer panel discussion with participants including Vinesh Bhimani of Kimoha Entrepreneurs, Leo Pack’s Chandrasain Negandhi and Sebastian Lonth from Reprotronics. Other presentations include Stewart Johnston from the Smithers Group who explored marco-economic trends facing the wider printing industry and discussing projected growth forecasts for the region’s market. FINAT’s president and managing director of OPM Group, Chris Ellison, shared his expertise in using MIS and workflow automation. The second day focused on the key challenges facing the industry and also considered the future of print. Sessions focused on the latest developments in logistics labeling and tracking technologies, wide format printing and diversifying from commercial printing into the high growth segment of flexible packaging. LEONHARD KURZ’s Ayhan Usulu also spoke about innovating for the future through anti-counterfeiting solutions, while Enayet Kabir from Landmark gave his insight into the strategic sourcing and procurement of offset and digital printing. The conference closed with a retailer and brand panel discussion where contributors including Sukhdev

Singh Saini of General Mills and Unilever’s Perwaze Qaiser, shared their experiences and best practice tips touching upon a range of subjects such as private label versus premium brands and how to maximize brand enhancement by creating a premium look for products. Supporting the conference program, the summit also hosted some of the print industry’s leading manufacturers as part of its table-top exhibition. Appearing alongside headline sponsor Xerox, fellow exhibitors included AFRA International, Anoop Plastic Products, Bobst, Durst, Heidelberg, Heliozid, Konica Minolta, Nilpeter and Vinsak. Lisa Milburn, managing director, Gulf Print & Pack said: “We have a very strong line-up of technical sessions, candid panel discussions and best practice business case studies in store for delegates. As the first dedicated summit we have organized in the region, the event will offer invaluable sourcing and networking opportunities with face-to-face interaction guaranteed between visitors, exhibitors and speakers. As well as being of significant educational value, the conference program delivers a comprehensive round-up of the latest technologies being released into the market and mix of timely topics designed to cover and give practical advice on how to deal with the real issues, threats and opportunities facing businesses.”

Key Packaging Considerations for eCommerce The ecommerce supply chain is usually more demanding than the traditional retail supply chain; Smithers Pira expert James White provides a brief overview of what decision makers should be considering when making their packaging decisions. Designing packaging for ecommerce can be a challenge; the supply chain can be unknown with unpredictable environmental conditions. However, there are several areas for packaging designers to consider which will help mitigate the risk of product damage.

Nature of the ecommerce supply chain There is no ‘set’ ecommerce distribution route; products bought online may face numerous paths to reach their consumer. Perhaps the simplest is where the product is shipped directly from the retailer to the consumer, although the package can still face environmental unknowns.

Alternatively, the retailer may outsource fulfilment to a third party (such as Amazon). This can bring additional packaging challenges as the product has to be shipped in bulk to a warehouse facility, before distribution to the consumer in individual units. Depending on the customer’s order, there may also be additional items from other retailers which form the total package and could have a negative impact on their product. Ecommerce platforms open up an international marketplace,

although this also brings more complex distribution channels.

Type of Product

Your product type will have a huge impact on the level of packaging protection required; is it fragile, flexible, high-value, or contains liquids or perishables? Any of these factors will impact how the packaging is designed to protect the product and ensure it reaches the customer in an undamaged condition.

Customer Expectations

In the age of social media transparency, this is an area growing in importance. It goes without saying that a customer will expect their product to arrive intact, but many also expect the packaging

to be undamaged too. We recently undertook a study where 39% of online shoppers said that damaged packaging would put them off placing another order with the brand. The unboxing experience is also an important consideration; for a good experience, your packaging doesn’t just need to be protective it also needs to be aesthetically pleasing and easy to deconstruct.

Sustainability

An increase in consumer awareness has caused a shift towards the use of recycled materials in packaging, and the usage of recycled (and recyclable) packaging can be a critical benefit against a competitor’s item. The packaging itself could also be redesigned to use fewer materials, with smart design reducing the amount of unnecessary void-filling materials while still providing suitable product protection.

Legal Obligations

ME‌Printer March 2018

There are various legal requirements for the distribution of certain products, such as those containing lithium-ion batteries or if they include hazardous chemicals or pharmaceuticals. These are usually specified as part of regulations and require simulated testing to demonstrate regulatory compliance.

Cerutti Announces Success in Turkey unwinders and rewinder and will allow the production of a very wide range of products such as wax / hot-melt (full or partial, inregister) coating, hot-melt (partial or full) lamination, etc. at very high speed, using a multi-trolley coating unit of the latest model EC 94X HM.

Another step of the long business relationship between Cerutti and Cevikbas Ambalaj has been achieved through a converting line for Ispak. In October 2017, Mehmet Cevikbas signed a deal with Dr. Giancarlo Cerutti for a new 10-color Cerutti press, to be installed this summer at Cevikbas Ambalaj plant (Konya, Turkey). The press includes all the state of the art progresses of Cerutti technology and will be dedicated to flexible packaging, targeting very high production speed. At the same time, Cevikbas also decided to subscribe to the Cerutti 24/7 service covering all the four presses running at Cevikbas plant in Konya. The agreement, signed with Dr. Luigi Cerutti, regards the brandnew Cerutti 24/7 service: the innovative modality to supply the remote assistance through an endto-end digital application, that has been recently launched and soon presented to the Turkish market where this contract has been the very first one.

Mehmet Cevikbas also added, “This press represents another step of our growth as a Company, and underline the confidence in Cerutti as our technology partner. I strongly believe this new machine will reach great productivity performances, giving us the chance to achieve new targets in developing our strategy of increasing of quality and production volumes.” Moreover, a new wax / hot-melt coating and laminating line has been delivered by the end of November to the new production plant of Ispak Esnek Ambalaj Sanayi A.Ş, in Izmit (Turkey). The new converting line will be equipped with full-automatic

The laminating group is adjustable both in height and web wrapping, thus optimizing the lamination process for a very wide range of materials and coating weights. A new coating head allows less hot-melt in circulation, a more accurate temperature control (that means cost savings in term of reduction of hot-melt coating thickness!), higher working speed, lower hot-melt fume emission. These are all innovation that today only our equipment is able to guarantee.”
