First Turkish Packaging Printer Signs Heidelberg Subscription Contract Turkish packaging producer Sentez, which is based in Istanbul and has a workforce of around 550, has elected to use the subscription model of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) as part of its growth and digitization strategy. That makes the Sentez Group the first Turkish company opting to conclude this type of contract with Heidelberg and use a very large format press. The pay-per-use agreement with Sentez includes not just one but two subscription contracts – one each for the 70 x 100 centimetre (27.56 x 39.37 inch) and 120 x 160 centimetre (47.24 x 62.99 inch) sheet formats. For both formats, Heidelberg is providing an all-in package that covers press, consumables, service, workflow, and performance consulting. This is replacing four competitors’ systems that Sentez has been using to date. In terms of value, it is one of the most comprehensive subscription contracts yet that Heidelberg has concluded with a single customer. Sentez is one of Turkey’s largest packaging printers and has a production area of some 55,000 square meters (just under 600,000 square feet). The company mainly produces folding cartons for the food and pharmaceutical industries, with around 20 percent of its products going to neighbouring countries.

“We weren’t actually planning any major investments in 2018, but the pay-per-use model being offered by Heidelberg will enable us to grow faster and significantly boost our productivity in a fiercely competitive market,” says the Sentez Group’s CEO M. Süleyman Öncel, explaining the reasons behind his investment decision. “The digitized solution from Heidelberg and the comprehensive consumables package providing peace of mind are also further increasing our level of automation.”

HYBRID Software Celebrates 2500th Sale of PACKZ HYBRID Software has announced the sale of its 2,500th license of PACKZ, its native PDF editor for labels and packaging, following a major partnership deal with the AUTAJON Group, which has its global headquarters in Montélimar, France. The new order will result in AUTAJON implementing almost one hundred PACKZ licenses across its production sites worldwide.

“It’s becoming increasingly clear that our use-based subscription model in conjunction with the Smart Print Shop is exactly what the sector has been waiting for. More and more customers in all market segments are keen to enjoy the benefits of higher productivity, increased flexibility, and a lower capital commitment. And only Heidelberg offers this combination!” stresses Stephan Plenz, member of the Heidelberg Management Board responsible for Digital Technology.

AUTAJON is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of folding cartons, set-up boxes, labels and point-ofsale products.

The Heidelberg subscription model is following the growing pay-per-use trend in mechanical engineering and aims to move away from growth based solely on selling and installing printing capacity. Under this Heidelberg model, customers only pay for the number of sheets actually printed. Under the conventional business model, they buy the presses and pay separately for consumables or services.

The PACKZ solution was chosen by AUTAJON for its ease of use, performance, openness and adaptability to the 4.0 environment. In addition, the ability to easily integrate PACKZ with existing prepress solutions and operate efficiently within any PDF scenario was particularly appealing. The new partnership will focus on common application-specific developments, which will be implemented in future product releases and updates from HYBRID Software. “We are very proud that this order from AUTAJON has enabled us to achieve such an important milestone in HYBRID Software’s history, the sale of the 2,500th license of PACKZ,” says Guido Van der Schueren, Chairman of the Board of HYBRID Software.

ME Printer July 2018

With the new digital business model, all the equipment, all consumables required – such as printing plates, inks, coatings, washup solutions, and blankets – a comprehensive range of services geared to availability, and consulting services intended to boost performance are included in the price per sheet to be charged.

The group supplies markets ranging from perfumes, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals to wines, spirits, confectionery and food specialities, while its customers include small, local businesses and prestigious international brands. The group consists of 36 companies operating from eight countries split across Europe, America and China.

EyeC Integrates Distance Measurement Into Print Inspection With EyeC inspection systems, print shops and their customers can now measure their print products. In just one inspection cycle, EyeC solutions for PDF proofing and sample testing can automatically check any relevant distances across all items. With this, companies can guarantee correct positioning of all print elements and adequate distances for clean die cutting. Even products with special shapes, such as labels for technical devices, can be measured automatically. The “Distance Measurement” option is available for EyeC Proofiler Graphic systems (pre-press inspection) and EyeC Proofiler DT Enhanced systems (print sample testing). The software checks all user-defined distances within the specific item, as well as the distances between the items. The

operator can set up any number of distances to be measured. The automatic edge detection makes the setup easy and reliable. During the inspection, the system compares all items against the defined target values. The system automatically notifies the operator as soon as any of the measurements are outside tolerance limits. The specification of additional warning ranges allows for timely corrective action before printing errors occur. At the end of the process, the system delivers a comprehensive report that keeps track of inspection results. To save even more time, print shops and their customers can perform distance measurements in combination with their PDF or print sample inspection. In just one inspection cycle, the system measures their print prod-

ucts and performs quality checks such as the verification of text and graphics. Technical drawing style measurement display provides intuitive set-up and operation. Mask saving function allows retrieval of measurement settings for repeat jobs. “The time savings of automatic distance measurement versus manual measurement are enormous,” explains Oliver Peitzner, Product Manager for EyeC Proofiler systems. “This allowed one of our customers for whom we developed the option to pare measurement time on a major order from about 17 working hours to less than six. For later orders, inspection of the same measured sections may even take only five minutes, because they are already stored and don’t have to be recreated.”

Koenig & Bauer On-Site Vocational School Celebrates 150 Years Some 200 guests, staff and pupils celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Koenig & Bauer on-site vocational school in Würzburg on 6 July 2018. Initially founded to train Franconian winegrowers to work in the factory, today the school is the company’s modern “talent factory”. The close link between theory and practice was a successful model that made history: in 1868 Koenig

& Bauer set up the world’s first inhouse vocational school to establish dual apprenticeships long before state vocational schools took off. “As a new-generation teaching facility, today the vocational training school prepares tomorrow’s skilled workers for the challenges of a digitalised world,” says Claus Bolza-Schünemann, president and CEO of Koenig & Bauer at the ceremony in Würzburg.

When Friedrich Koenig and Andreas Bauer, the two company founders, set up a printing press factory in Oberzell Monastery at the beginning of the 19th century, the region around Würzburg was mainly characterised by winegrowing. There was a distinct lack of suitable factory workers to put a modern division of labour into practice in the industrial sense. The logical consequence for Friedrich Koenig, son of the founder’s father, was to establish a factory training school, the first of its kind in the world.

ME Printer July 2018

Apart from a few interruptions during the two world wars, Koenig & Bauer has since trained future young skilled workers in a wide variety of crafts and technical professions. Since its foundation on July 2, 1868, well over 7,000 people have taken the first steps in their professional careers at the vocational school. In its anniversary year, it is responsible for the qualification of 120 apprentices.

Packaging Day Held at Heidelberg Print Media Center in Shanghai, China On May 23rd and 24th, more than 250 visitors from Greater China as well as from Asia Pacific regions joined the Packaging Day at Heidelberg Print Media Center in Shanghai, China. Under the theme “Think out of the Box”, they were able to see for themselves the latest Packaging Solutions from Heidelberg, which is aimed to help them stand out from the market competition, and continuously grow a profitable business and sustainable development in the digital era. Heidelberg offers solutions for consistent Packaging Workflow with complete end-to-end box production. All presentations and demos showed the visitors the complete process chain until the finished box. Also, seamless integration of die cutting, inspection and folding carton glueing are all essential for an effective packaging production.

ME Printer July 2018

There is huge potential for the Packaging printing market. In the next five years, Asia Pacific region will come out at the top of the list in terms of market size and market growth rate of packaging printing. In China, the overall market development potential remains promising in the coming years. Thanks to the process

10

of urbanization and the expansion of the middle class in China, continuous demands for packaging printing products will be driven forward.

Highlights of the Packaging Day

“In fact, the packaging printing market in China is facing some challenges similar to those encountered in developed countries, e.g. increasing demands for spot color and special effects, higher demands for standardized production, diversified job orders with increasingly shorter run length and faster delivery time, higher requirements on flexibility and OEE (overall equipment effectiveness). It is time ‘to think out of the box’”, explained Benny Huang, CEO of Heidelberg Greater China, in his opening speech.

The foundation for “Smart Print Shop” concept is the Prinect workflow, which was presented at the event in the first place. Thanks to Prinect, the live demonstration machines and processes have become so intelligent that the upstream process all the way to the press has been fully networked and automated, which quite impressed the guests.

Heidelberg provides suitable solutions to address the above issues. With the “Smart Print Shop” concept, print shops are able to use smart, intelligently networked production environments to achieve an outstanding performance. Thus the way is paved for navigated and autonomous printing, with efficient production and completing ever shorter job runs profitably, as well as much less manual interventions, lower error rate and lower waste.

The Prinect Packaging Designer software was introduced to the guests in particular. Packaging print shops can benefit from its extensive library with more than 1,800 scalable designs and components, which enable them to draft folding cartons and create the corresponding layouts in a very simple way. The Speedmaster CD 1027+L and Speedmaster CX 75-4 played a key role during the live demonstrations, which attracted many visitors’ attention. The “Thank you box” was the central theme and its production was shown from the intro presentation until the finished box as a customer gift.

This box printed on CD 102-7+L showcased the Heidelberg Multicolor solution, which is the colour substitution to Pantone as well as enlargement of colour space. Using Multicolor solution print shops could benefit from the reduction of washing and make-ready times and enormous potential for material savings. The box was finished with Masterwork Postpress Solutions, die cutting with Easymatrix 106 CS, inspection with Diana Eye and folding carton glueing with Diana Easy. Another demo job of CD 102-7+L was a cosmetics box. The most challenging applications on this job were the opaque white on the silver board, and the Prinect Image Control 3 was the perfect solution here. With the Image Control 3 quality and colour measuring system, print shops are able to measure and control opaque white using a completely standard quality control strip for the first time. Press operators can now save and access the target colour values more easily and Prinect Image Control 3 ensures reliable control of day-to-day print production. In the meantime, DripOff varnishing application was processed in one pass. In a further step additional embossing was done by a die cutter. Speedmaster CX 75, the multi-talent, entry-packaging-machine, also produced two jobs showing the customer benefit in packaging printing: quick and easy job change as well as user-friendliness. Lifecycle Solutions with the components Saphira consumables and services are an essential part of Heidelberg’s solution offering to customers for achieving top quality, productivity, and production reliability.

Thomas Frank, Head of Heidelberg Asia Pacific summarized: “Packaging Printing in Asia is changing dramatically. The challenges for the printers are manifold. But there are solutions such as our Prinect workflow. With Prinect Multicolor workflow, Saphira consumables and a highperformance 7-color Speedmaster print shops can boost their productivity and cut the costs significantly. This is what we can demonstrate in our demo centre in Shanghai. The showroom is tailor-made for the needs of Asian printers. Apart from our workflow software, digital and offset presses we now also have the full range of Postpress equipment on display, for both Packaging and Commercial Printers.” On May 23rd, visitors attended a delivery ceremony in Qingpu factory in Shanghai, where a Speedmaster CD 102-7+L with its press number 888 was delivered to the end-user Dongguan New Island Printing Co. Ltd. New Island Printing Co. Ltd., started as a family-sized print shop in Hong Kong, has become one of the leading and reputable printing and packaging companies in Hong Kong and mainland China. Today they mainly produce highquality packaging and paper products with the capability to cater to various industries worldwide. The Dongguan site is the largest manufacturing plant of New Island Printing Group. A start-to-finish service is provided to serve mainland China as well as foreign markets, with their prepress facilities, seven and eight

colour Heidelberg sheetfed presses, converting lines as well as automated and manual-assembly lines. Guests also visited the workshop of Heidelberg Qingpu factory and had a closer look at Heidelberg´s equipment on the assembly line and the final testing area. They were impressed by the high level of automation in Qingpu factory. Qingpu is the production site of Heidelberg Group in Asia. There is the assembly of small-, medium- and large-format presses mainly for the Chinese and also the other Asian markets. The assembly commenced in 2006. Qinqpu plant is part of the Heidelberg production network. It has 450 staff for production and 150 for sales and service in the Shanghai area. In connection with the visit of Qingpu over 70 customers from Indonesia, India, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines also took the chance to visit the factory of MK Masterwork in Tianjin, some two hours’ drive southeast of Beijing. They were impressed by the factory tour, the presentations of the Easymatrix 106 FC and Powermatrix 106 CSB and the company own graphic museum. Since four years Heidelberg established a cooperative agreement with MK Masterwork. The two manufacturing giants have been working hard to build a cohesive sales and support programme for their combined range of printing and converting technology. The current product portfolio includes die cutters, foil stamping machines, sheet inspection technology, and folder gluers. Over 700 people are working in a 150,000 sq/m facility – it represents the equivalent of 18 soccer pitches.

ME Printer July 2018

The up-to-date Lifecycle Solutions were integrated into presentations of CD 102 Job 1 – CX 75 – CD 102 Job 2. After printing demo, the Multicolor Job was directly referenced to Lifecycle with Multicolor Kit from Saphira. At the same time, Heidelberg also celebrated the tenth anniversary of the “Saphira” brand. With Saphira, Heidelberg offers an extensive portfolio of high-quality consumables, both for everyday print jobs and special applications, as well as all production requirements for prepress, press and postpress.

On May 24-25th, the “Think out of the Box” – Heidelberg Packaging Day also received guests from print shops in other countries in Asia Pacific region. Stephan Plenz, member of the Heidelberg Management Board responsible for Digital Technology welcomed all the guests and strengthened customers’ confidence in Heidelberg Packaging Solutions. “With our comprehensive packaging printing solutions that combines efficiency and cost-effectiveness with consistent quality, we help customers make more business and profit. The show today will provide you with new ideas and inspiration to boost up your business,” explained Stephan Plenz in his welcome speech.

Canon Goes Full Steam with Regional Expansion by Opening Canon Saudi Arabia ME Printer speaks to Shadi Bakhour, the B2B Business Unit Director at Canon Middle East, about the company’s regional expansion into Saudi Arabia and the technology and market trends currently prevalent in the region. How was 2017 for the company? What opportunities and challenges did it present?

The year 2017 has been a transformational one for Canon as we have moved beyond the traditional elements of imaging and focused our efforts towards innovation, agility and solution-driven approaches that benefit our customers and have a positive impact. We are shifting from merely delivering and driving products to the business sector, to ensuing customer-centricity via offering a hub of solutions that are tailored to suit their operational models and maximize their returns on investment. As a part of our strategy of working closely with customers, Canon unveiled its very first Innovation Center in the Middle East region in Dubai, this year. It provides businesses and other entities with a live demonstration of all of Canon’s latest hardware and software technologies. Canon’s full range of business solutions are on display and can be tested as they would in any office or warehouse environment. It also assists in offering a manageable system while assuring cost saving, added security, and opening new communications scenarios for end-consumers.

ME Printer July 2018

What sort of technology and market trends did you experience on the market?

12

Changing customer preferences, increased mobility, and technological change is reshaping the print industry. For more than a century, the world of commercial print was all about offset. While offset presses still account for a significant portion of the print volume, it can’t be denied that the tide of the market is beginning to drift in the direction of digital printing. Vast improvements in the quality and speed of

digital systems have opened the door for print service providers to pass along significant advantages to their customers like variable data printing for one-to-one marketing and augmented reality for interactive experiences. Talking about a market like Saudi Arabia in specific, Canon will be further expanding its offerings across the Saudi market where we see a growing need for digital and other technology-based imaging services. As the government, and other large entities, seek to implement the latest digital business solutions to become more agile, competitive, efficient, reduce operational costs and to adapt to today’s changing business environment, Canon’s suite of products and services address challenges and allow for streamlining of processes to achieve growth through organisation-wide digital transformation.

What sort of opportunities do digital printing solutions offer when compared with traditional offset systems?

Digital printing offers impressive quality and consistency over other options. In addition to being costeffective, it is also the ideal method of producing short to medium print runs. It facilitates quick turnaround of small-lot jobs while also providing the added value advantages of variable printing. Variable data printing enables users to change the content of individual printed sheets, and direct mail and in-house production of POP materials and posters, is revolutionizing the printing business, supporting a richer and more convenient lifestyle for those in the printing industry and beyond. Digital print enables PSPs to be more efficient and flexible, ensuring they can meet print buyers’ demands

and take on more complex jobs. This includes finishing and the inclusion of variable data for end-to-end production of personalized applications. As a result, PSPs need to be sure that their work environments are adaptable and fast enough to take advantage of an ever-changing market that predominately wants print-on-demand.

Is the market moving towards digital print solutions?

In the recent years, digital printing has shown a robust growth, as the demand for long runs is shrinking and short runs and variable printing are becoming increasingly popular. A report from Smithers Pira shows that the region’s printing sector will collectively expand at an annual rate of

8.7 per cent to over $40 billion in market value in 2022 from $26.8 billion in 2017 of which digital, inkjet and toner, the output is set to rise at the fastest rate. Globally, digital printing accounts for 16.2% of the global print market value and 2.9% of the volume. Organizations are increasingly adopting digital printing technologies in response to the requirement to reduce and eliminate unnecessary costs, increase process efficiencies and produce high volumes of printed customer correspondence.

How does Canon work with its partners and customers to bring forth the opportunities of digital print solutions?

By working in partnership with our partners, the Canon Partner Channel brings together the skills and innovation to develop the power of Canon’s brand, products, solutions and services to deliver mutual success. The company appreciates that partners need a clear path to profit that is competitive with other products and services, product innovation that is competitive in the market, reliable delivery and support for Canon products and a partner with market credibility.

Recognizing the steps to success, Canon strives to make it easier for our partners to do business with them and is committed to supporting partners at each and every stage of the journey from planning to after-sales support. New opportunities for PSPs start with thinking creatively about the equipment, techniques and substrates they already use and then finding ways in which those can meet different needs and for some that may mean adopting an application that they already produce to suit a different market.

What does 2018 have in store for the regional print industry?

The Middle East market has strong potential and we have put together all the right strategies to grow our business in the market and to our vision, which includes enriching lives and businesses through imaging experience. Today marketers are looking at how the customers receive and respond to communications from businesses, and how to use data in such a way that enables each interaction with the customer to be relevant, informative and as part of an on-going conversation.

This is applicable to the entire marketing mix, including print. Variable data printing (VDP) is nothing new, however, the way it can be used with regards to the end-user experience is creating new possibilities. Using clever journey mapping, forward-thinking print service providers (PSPs) are working with customers to create sophisticated documents that ‘do more’ by achieving multiple objectives. Another prominent trend is augmented reality which helps bring printed images to life through embedded videos, sound and even GPS location data. The popularity of smartphones equipped with GPS and geomagnetic sensors provides the opportunity for delivering highly contextualized and relevant information to customers, improving engagement and interactivity. We are seeing AR solutions used for catalogues, magazines and signs to make print part of an extraordinary interactive experience.

ME Printer July 2018

This year, print service providers will need to reinvent themselves. They must come up with new ideas to keep operations, products, and services fresh and consistent with changing customer communications demands. Print will continue to play a strong role in the communications mix in 2018, where the digital print will assume higher levels of importance as per the customer’s versatile requirements. Wide format printing is a profitable and complementary product offering for print service providers seeking new opportunities and higher margins as signage will continue to play a major role in effectively promoting products and services. Workflow automation is no longer an option but a necessity with the transition from long-run static offset print runs to short-run personalized digital printing is accelerating.

Interviews

With the Acquisition of Quadtech, BALDWIN Plans to Create a Global Platform ME Printer spoke to the President of BALDWIN Vision Systems, Karl Fritchen, about the acquisition, the positive impact this agreement will have on the industry and the company’s existing customers, and his vision for BALDWIN Vision Systems moving forward. Firstly, there have been rumours in the market that QuadTech is being dissolved or reduced now that it has been acquired by BALDWIN Technology Company. Is there any truth in that?

Definitely not. In fact, QuadTech’s press controls business is actually expanding, under a different corporate parent and name. BALDWIN Technology Company is uniting QuadTech’s press controls business with two of its existing entities—Web Printing Controls and PC Industries—creating a global platform that will operate as the new “BALDWIN Vision Systems” business segment. BALDWIN Technology Company, and parent company BW Forsyth Partners, recognized the potential of adding QuadTech to its portfolio of print technology solutions, combining talents and capabilities with PC Industries and WPC. BALDWIN’s aggressive overall strategy required a component with colour management, register control, and inspection solutions—making these acquisitions a perfect fit for the business.

ME Printer July 2018

For QuadTech, being part of a larger organization means more diverse technical capabilities under one company umbrella. We can now offer higher volume and a wider variety of options that fit our customers’ processes and budget. Our product offerings are now stronger and more complete, and we have already won new business with our new combined offering.

14

However, for us, this is just the beginning. Moving forward, we are focused on aligning and expanding our technologies into the strongest offering in the global market.

So, BALDWIN Technology Company doesn’t have plans to divide and sell QuadTech’s assets?

QuadTech is the 4th acquisition for BALDWIN in 2017 and the 100th acquisition for the Barry-Wehmiller Group. In its history, Barry-Wehmiller has NEVER closed or sold one of its acquisitions so we’re confident that these companies are invested in our future and continued success. In addition, the synergies between QuadTech’s product portfolio and expertise and BALDWIN Technology Company as a leading global manufacturer and supplier of processautomation equipment and related consumables for the printing, packaging and other industrial segments make the two companies an ideal match.

How will your customers, or the industry as a whole, benefit from this new company structure?

Many of our competitors have individual products. However, with this new powerhouse of technologies, we’re now able to put more pieces together to offer complete software and hardware solutions for colour management, register control, and inspection. We’re able to connect data throughout the overall process and workflow, with automated tools for pre-press, at press, and postpress. And that capability is going to expand! This will provide customers and prospects with a more streamlined, coherent solution from one leading supplier, better equipping the industry to meet the demand for accurate and increased quality control within the shortest possible timeframe. In addition, prior to the acquisition, PCI and WPC were well known in the USA but did not have a global sales and service footprint. Now

their product lines are available and fully supported worldwide, along with QuadTech’s. By combining with BALDWIN’s existing global footprint, our customers can now benefit from a much stronger product portfolio that’s available to more markets, through more offices, agents, and service operations.

Can you explain this expanded global reach in more detail? Where exactly will you be located?

As part of BALDWIN, we are expanding from 5 to 21 locations worldwide. The new headquarters for BALDWIN Vision Systems is under construction (completion estimated as the end of May, 2018) so we will be located in our present headquarters in Sussex, WI, USA until this facility is ready for us to move into. However, our U.S. manufacturing operation is moving to BALDWIN’s facility in Fairfield, IL, USA and that move is already well underway. We are continuing our presence in the regions we were in previously but combining with BALDWIN will give us all a much stronger presence in all of those markets, such as the Americas, Europe, India, Japan, and southeast Asia—and even expand our presence in other markets. We now have opportunities to leverage economies from volume across a broader range of products and locations for an improved system and service offerings.

What do you see as BALDWIN Vision Systems’ key market advantage?

In addition to the financial backing and global platform of a large and growing organization, we bring several advantages that competitors can’t match. As I’ve mentioned, this new combination of market-leading companies creates a much stronger product portfolio and a more

solid global footprint for commercial, newspaper, and packaging markets. For all printers, we also act as valuable process consultants, rather than just being equipment suppliers. For example, on the packaging side, we are also in regular conversations with brand owners, which gives us a unique insight into their pain points and expectations. This enables us to collaborate with printers and brand owners alike on solutions that meet brands’ exacting requirements. We also have strong relationships with ink manufacturers to ensure that we can offer our customers support with an expanded range of production issues.

What will happen to current QuadTech, PCI, and WPC product lines? Will products be continued/discontinued?

There is minimal overlap between the current product lines. This provides a great opportunity for printers, as our products complement each other far more than they compete. This will give printers the ability to choose between multiple options in a product class and select the option that best fits their specific need and budget. For instance, in the newspaper and commercial printing applications, BALDWIN Visions Systems not only offers standalone colour-to-colour registration and colour control systems, but also combined functionality from the same camera, if needed. Additionally, customers can choose between RGB-based or spectral-based colour control, depending upon process and customer requirements. In packaging applications, our combined product portfolio includes options for offset, flexo, gravure, and the unique requirements of digital print.

What about new product development? Is that going to continue?

Absolutely. We now have more available resources for new product development and a renewed focus on making existing technology available to a wider market—whether that means new systems or upgrading and optimizing existing presses to help printers compete. In fact, this quarter we will have our first new product launch as BALDWIN Vision Systems, so look for more information on that coming soon. Our focus remains the same: innovating and delivering world-class colour measurement and management, registration and vision system technologies. By combining engineering talent and expertise, and with the infusion of more financial resources, we plan to expand automation capabilities to include and connect other workflows within print operations. The combined Engineering teams of WPC, PCI and QuadTech have been integrated into two market-focused teams. The Commercial & Newspaper team is led by Herman Gneuchtel and the Packaging team is led by Kelly Hanaway. Both groups are excited about the talent they now share and the additional resources that are available to provide our customers with new solutions.

What will be the first event/ tradeshow that BALDWIN Vision Systems attends under the new brand? And what can visitors to that event look forward to seeing from you?

Our first event as a new entity was to sponsor the Fogra Colour Management Symposium in Munich, Germany. Upcoming events include Converters Expo in the USA, Label Summit Latin America 2018 in Mexico, and INFO*FLEX/FTA Forum in the

USA. Plans are also underway for multiple speaking events and exhibits in India, Italy, Japan, and Thailand. At all these events, our combined teams will be on-hand to provide customers and prospects with expert technical and market consultancy plus the latest information about our products. We realize that for a time, people will be looking for QuadTech, PCI, and WPC, so visitors to the above events will see a “co-branded” presence with those names under the BALDWIN umbrella at any event we attend this year.

And finally, Karl, what are your objectives for the future of BALDWIN Vision Systems? How does this align with the wider company’s vision?

To summarize, BALDWIN Technology Company purchased QuadTech to offer a complete product portfolio to the market that will enable them to aggressively pursue a larger share of the global print technology market. These goals align with my own objectives for BALDWIN Vision Systems and the part we will play in realizing this wider strategy as one new print technology powerhouse. The important components that QuadTech brings to BALDWIN are expertise in colour management and register control, a robust set of solutions, and a well-established global platform. In addition, BALDWIN has a strong desire to be a force in the packaging and converting markets, where QuadTech has already been developing important technological innovations. We are therefore poised to make a significant impact on printers’ bottom lines, and their ability to connect data and workflows to automate their processes. It’s an exciting time for us, our customers and the wider industry.

ME Printer July 2018

We offer pre-press proofing solutions, as well as on-press and post-press solutions across narrow-, mid-, and wide-web applications—as well as sheet-fed applications. Furthermore, we offer connected tools across pre-press, production and post-press workflows that help our customers monitor and manage much more than just the print process—but also their inks, job data, production quality and reports.

Customers who bought any of our products recently can rest assured that parts or suitable alternatives for any products will be made available for at least 7-10 years after the announcement of any product discontinuation. In addition, all our solutions will keep their current product names and will, therefore, be easily identifiable moving forward.

We are seeing that the demand is increasing. We are already on the market and we continuously work with our partners to get more traction in the market. We have a number of partners who are actively leading with ink and Epson has been at the forefront of this technology. We have many customers who have switched from laser to inkjet printers. We have been running lots of campaigns and we will be doing some roadshows to educate the customers about the benefits of making the switch. The lower cost of printing, the increased productivity, and the sustainability aspects of inks, will be the

key focus for us. We want to tell our customers that ink is really a viable alternative to laser.

What markets does Epson currently focus on?

You would expect organizations that are environmentally conscious to be interested in our new products. We have already put a fleet of inkjet printers into a hotel, for example. We are talking to a number government agencies to overhaul their printing needs. Enviroserve is another company that is moving into a new facility and they have chosen to go with Epson products and solutions. Anyone who understands the benefits of ink solutions and has CSR initiatives with sustainability at the forefront of the program will always opt for an inkjetbased solution. The cost of ownership is also significantly less and these products offer better ROI.

Women in Print

A True Leader Has the Confidence to Stand Alone ME Printer speaks to Pauline Brooks, the Marketing Development Manager Marketing Division UAE, at Konica Minolta about what inspired her to choose the printing industry as her career choice Tell us about your leadership style and philosophy.

I believe in leading by example, I have been fortunate to attend some excellent management and leadership training courses over the years which has helped me to influence the behaviors, attitudes and thoughts of others. Hopefully I see people’s potential and encourage them as well as inspire. Philosophy: “A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. She does not set out to be a leader but becomes one by the equality of her actions and the integrity of her intent.”

What made you choose Printing and Graphics Industry as a career opportunity?

I don’t think I chose the printing industry, I think it chose me. I was working as an administrator for an offset litho manufacturer in the UK, an opportunity came up for a showroom demonstrator to learn about the machines and look after the showroom for the sales team.

How has your unique background prepared you for success in the industry?

Starting as a young woman in a male dominated industry taught

What was your most interesting job? It had to be the customer training role as I learnt so much about the industry and worked with some amazing people. I also visited some really interesting places to train people, one I remember very well was a prison for young offenders, they set up print room inside the prison to train offenders a skill before they left prison, it was very rewarding and a unique experience.

What advice would you give to women looking to break into the field of print and related industry?

Look at it as a career and not just a job, there are so many different avenues to explore some of which you are not aware exists until you actually start working in the industry.

What is the greatest transformation in the printing that you’ve witnessed in your career?

Due to being in the industry for such a long time, I have seen so many amazing changes, but I think the one that has made such a massive difference to myself and the industry was the transition from litho to digital.

What are your thoughts on the next transformation in the print and graphics industry?

The next biggest transformation is already happening with Ink Jet growing rapidly, all the key manu-

facturers are investing in the new presses to entice the consumer and the market. Inkjet is becoming increasingly important in industrial decoration and textile printing; these developments are contributing to inkjet improvements. According to Smithers Pira, inkjet will overtake electrophotography after 2019, and by 2024 inkjet will account for 56% of the market share and 53% of the digital print volume.

Are you involved in any sort of volunteer work?

Yes, looking after my husband. But on a serious note, no, not at the moment.

What’s next for you in terms of your career in the printing industry?

I would like to maybe start my own consultancy business back in the UK.

ME Printer July 2018

I applied for the job, not knowing anything about printing and the rest is history. Having gone from being a showroom demonstrator, to customer trainer, to sales person, to product manager and now the role I am currently in which is marketing development. I have worked for some of the top industry market leaders during my career, my love for the industry has always been the same.

me first of all to have a sense of humor and don’t take yourself too seriously, stand up for yourself and don’t be frightened to ask questions. In my view experience is priceless.

ME Printer July 2018

Why did the company choose to go with an HP PageWide Printer?

18

The new family of HP Large Format PageWide printers deliver highquality prints at a faster speed and lower costs on a wide range of media. The running cost is very economical and less maintenance is required.

The machine is also easy to handle. The PageWide is capable of delivering pages at twice the speed and half the cost per page of lasers.

What problems was the company facing before you decided to invest in a new HP machine?

We have a very good relationship with other machine suppliers for long years. On basis of that, we purchased our new heavy duty plotter from them. However, the machine always had maintenance issues and the suppliers were not able to fix the problems on time. In parallel, we were thinking of buying an HP PageWide for almost a year, and we thought now was the time to finally make the investment in the new machine.

How was HP’s machine chosen? Did you trial-run any other machinery from other suppliers?

We went to see the performance of HP PageWide at a couple of different digital printing centres. We were satisfied with its performance and output quality. We also did not hear any complaint about the machine from the users. The pricing of the machine was within our budget and that made us sign up for it.

Post-installation, what sort of efficiency has the new HP PageWide Printer brought onboard?

Every day, we print a minimum of 500 meters. HP PageWide is a printing machine that offers better print speeds than anything we have seen on the market. This allows us to achieve our target within a small amount of time. The main highlight of the machine is that there are no technical errors in between the print jobs.

How is HP PageWide Printer helping you run your business in a much better way?

We can print a minimum of 5000 units of A0 drawings within a day with the HP PageWide. This helps us to meet the urgent print jobs from our regular clients. The machine also gives us the confidence to commit to bulk order printing.

Post-installation, was any training given to your employees on how to run and use the HP PageWide Printer?

HP’s technical experts trained our staff upon installation of the machine. The training now allows our staff to change the toners, load papers, perform troubleshooting jobs and so on. We have already given a good feedback about the HP PageWide printer to companies that ask us about this machine.

Eidco Labels Installs Fastest Narrow Web Press in Lebanon In the 10 years since its foundation, family-owned and managed Eidco Labels has grown to become one of Lebanon’s leading label suppliers. Housed in a purpose-built facility in Zouk Mikael, on the outskirts of capital city Beirut, the company employs 25 staff and is self-sufficient from pre-press to despatch. Managing Director, Eid Zgheib, explained the background of his company and its Middle East location. “I’d had 12 years’ experience in pre-press with an international group before starting the business in 2009, so was familiar with the demands of high-quality print. We are in fact the only label supplier in Lebanon to have its own in-house pre-press department, and believe it is fundamental to our success.” A close working relationship with the Beirut office of Middle East-based Dynagraph Group led Eidco Labels to start off by installing a Mark Andy 2200 press. It proved to be a sharp move, with the company moving into profit after only two months. “The 2200 is a highly productive workhorse. Ours is a six-colour 10” press with UV and hot air capability, corona and web cleaning, delam/ relam, two die stations, a laminator and a sheeter – all of which gives us the capability of producing the wide variety of jobs that were essential to keeping a positive cash flow in the early days,” he added, saying that the company typically handles 1100 jobs/year.

The current unrest in the region is posing problems with traditional supply routes, with many land borders with neighbouring Syria, Iraq, and Jordan closed for freight, so the company has refocused its product portfolio and markets, and invested in new technology to diversify the business. The latest addition to the plant is one of Mark Andy’s P7 Performance Series all-servo presses. One of the first and the only uprated P7 models installed in the Middle East, it is the only 17” (430mm) narrow web press in Lebanon, and by some measure the fastest, being rated at 300m/min. “Despite the ongoing conflict in the region, Lebanese products, especially cosmetics, detergents and food are well known for their quality and in high demand, and it was to tap into the printed packaging for these markets with shrink sleeves and in-mould labels that we chose the Mark Andy P7,” he explained. The new press has eight UV-flexo print stations and IR drying capability. Fitted with a rail system that supports a screen print head and cold foil capability, the P7 has a corona treated web cleaner, chambered doctor blades and a single die station. The new press has more than doubled capacity at Eidco Labels, which now has three flexo lines, and is currently responsible for around 90% of local cosmetic labels, 65% of local detergent product labels, and a growing 30% of local food labels. “We first saw the P7 at Labelexpo in Chicago and within two months we

had ordered it, and six months later it was installed. It is the best narrow web press on the market for shrink sleeves and in-mould work because it runs at high speed without loss of quality – nothing else competes!” he explained. Speaking for Mark Andy, European ASM Timo Donati, who is responsible for Lebanon, stated, “The working relationship between Dynagraph and Eidco Labels has been beneficial to both parties. Like all good partnerships, it’s based on trust and mutual support. Mark Andy is delighted to have such a professional company as its distributor in the region and I congratulate Eidco Labels on its continued success with our technology.” Both the 2200 and the P7 have been responsible for raising the quality standard of Lebanese labels, according to Eid Zgheib, who do not see any likelihood of investing in digital print technology in the near future. “I can foresee another two years of conflict in Syria, and even longer before normality returns to trade in the region, so it’s important that we consolidate our existing capability as well as search for new opportunities. The new P7 is more productive on a wider range of substrates than we could have predicted, so offers us plenty of scope for expansion,” said Eid Zgheib. Chosen for its ability with unsupported film, the new press ‘can do anything’, Zgheib added. Run lengths at the plant vary from 1000 to 50,000m, and the press typically runs in-mould jobs at 225m/min. ME Printer July 2018

One thing is for sure, Eidco Labels is well equipped to cope with today’s difficult trading conditions in the region, but also well prepared for a future that hopefully brings peace and restores business links.

Binder + Wöhrle Modernises its Production With CIJ Printers From Leibinger

Binder + Wöhrle is convinced that inevitably, the time comes for even the most tried and tested technology to retire.

ME Printer July 2018

The manufacturer of plastic pipes, profiles, and Bowden cables, which are used in cars from VW among others, has said goodbye to its old hot stamping machines for product marking. CIJ printers from Paul Leibinger GmbH & Co. KG is now being used instead. They are more flexible, faster and do not directly touch the products.

20

Are you familiar with Bowden cables? Maybe not by name. But if you ride a bicycle, then you are making use of the cables that Englishman Ernest Monnigton (1859-1904) invented. They transmit tensile and compressive forces and are also used in

motorcycle and car gas and clutch cables – in the seat adjustment and hood opening mechanisms. What very few people know is that one of the leading manufacturers of plastic pipes, profiles and Bowden cables is located in the Black Forest, in Hausach near Offenburg, Germany. The tranquil town with only 6,000 inhabitants is home to Binder + Wöhrle, easily recognizable from a distance with its white-red headquarters and more than 8,000 square meter production plant in striking contrast to the green forests of the surrounding area. Over three shifts, 60 employees process more than 800 tons of wire per year. The company achieves a yearly turnover of over eight million euros and counts well-known companies such as VW among its customers.

The challenge: Hot stamping machines are reaching their limits

As one of the technology leaders in plastic pipes, profiles and Bowden cables, Binder + Wöhrle strives to be at the cutting edge of technology. And this is why old technologies regularly give way to state-ofthe-art solutions: an example being the hot-stamping machines which were used for product marking. They did a dependable job for years, printing pre-heated embossed marks on plastic sheets that peeled off and stuck to the product as a typeface. The hot stamping machines could be operated economically but only at a time when little data had to appear on products. Today things are very different, explains Klemens Isele, Managing Director of Binder + Wöhrle. We are required by law

to provide a variety of product data including product number, material identification and production date. The hot stamping machines, which made changing typefaces quite time-consuming, have reached the limits of their flexibility. And this is why Isele went in search of a cost-effective and flexible labelling system.

The solution: Non-contact marking with CIJ printers

In order to find the right labelling system, Isele did not even have to leave Baden-Württemberg. In fact, he found the perfect solution not far from home. In neighbouring Tuttlingen, there is another world leader, not in Bowden cables, but in industrial marking systems: the Paul Leibinger company, founded in 1948. It produces the JET3up, a printer that meets Binder + Wöhrle's requirements to a T. Since information is not fixed as in the case of a hot stamping machine, but rather it can be changed within seconds – five-line small fonts, graphics, barcodes and all common data matrix codes with a print height of up to 16 millimeters included. “With these printers, we are now able to label our products faster than ever and can implement product changes even more quickly,” says Isele. Information can be adjusted using a 10.4-inch touchscreen that is as easy to use as a smartphone. It’s the what-you-see-is-what-youget (WYSIWYG) principle at work. The set information appears oneto-one on the product, all without nerve-wracking test runs.

Flying ink drops at work

The secret of this non-contact marking is a technology called Continuous Inkjet (CIJ). It works within the cylindrical printhead, which looks directly at the product from

When printing, two deflection electrodes come into play. They change the trajectory of individual drops so that they land as a pixel on the product surface and dry within one second. This is how, as if by magic, black and white markings appear on the products, and the remaining drops fly straight into the catcher tube and circulate in the system. “You have to see this printer technology with your own eyes to believe it,” raved Isele. “Seemingly out of nowhere the information appears on the Bowden cable. Quickly and without ever touching the product.” The printers even have power reserves. They can keep up with speeds of up to 600 meters per minute equivalent to 36 km/h. And it is always possible to increase line speeds without the marking systems causing a bottleneck. Thirteen printers are now being used at Binder + Wöhrle's production facilities. Not only in the Bowden cable production, but also in the production of pipes and hoses another one of the company's business areas.

catcher tube remain open on many CIJ printheads, which results in the ink drying and the nozzle becoming clogged, which makes a lot of cleaning work necessary to ensure that the restart does not lead to a diffuse spit of ink and an indistinct typeface,” explains Christina Leibinger, Managing Proprietor of Paul Leibinger GmbH and Co. KG. This isn’t the case with Sealtronic. “During production stops, the catcher tube moves to the nozzle and closes the system airtight. When restarting, the typeface is immediately clear and stable – without cleaning and rinsing cycles, production can begin again immediately.” The outstanding reliability of the made-in-Germany printers was also an argument for opting for Leibinger when modernizing the company’s marking systems. “Printer reliability plays a key role for us,” says Isele. “If the labelling system fails for only a few minutes, several meters of valuable pipes and profiles become scrap.” And if a system does threaten to break down, technicians from Leibinger are just around the corner. “We are very satisfied with the technical service. If problems arise, we know that we won’t have to wait too long for help, and we can count on production being able to resume as fast as possible.” Isele is impressed: “Our slogan – “Precision and safety” – is reflected in the Leibinger printers.”

A patented sealing system reduces cleaning requirements

Isele is also impressed with the printers’ low operating costs. With a power consumption of about 30 watts, the devices use less power than a light bulb. The consumption of ink is equally low. With a litre of ink, the devices print 160 million characters – almost enough for the whole year. Moreover, maintenance and cleaning costs are low. Thanks to the automatic Sealtronic sealing system, which Leibinger developed itself, no elaborate cleaning is required before production start. “When the printer is out of service or in standby mode, the nozzle and

ME Printer July 2018

Another advantage of the JET3up is that, unlike with the hot stamping machine, the printer does not actually touch the product. This allows quick marking, which is gentle on the product and reduces the risk of breakage.

above, and runs out of the extruder at a speed of around 200 meters per minute. In the printhead, which is connected to the hydraulics in the printer housing via an umbilical, 96,000 charged drops of ink per second shoot through a tiny nozzle in the direction of a collection pipe.

Koenig & Bauer Develops New Cutter For Gravure Presses

24

Koenig & Bauer has developed a new cutter for gravure presses. As a result, print shops with gravure presses can now significantly expand their order portfolio. BurdaDruck (Hubert Burda Media), one of Europe’s most high-performance gravure printing companies, is investing in this new development. Heiko Engelhardt, managing director at BurdaDruck: “The concept of expanding the cutter convinced us right from the

start. As Koenig & Bauer also offers many other services for gravure presses and has extensive knowhow in this field, we are convinced that we have the right partner at our side. The new cutter is to be installed this year as part of a retrofit to the existing press fleet at the Burda printing site in Vieux-Thann, France. “This investment enables us to offer our

customers an even larger product portfolio in the future. We can also produce small volumes from eight pages, glued with a two-page jump. The format variability of gravure printing enables considerable savings in paper consumption through optimum formats, which is a major requirement of our customers as paper prices are increasing,” says Ingo Raab, sales manager at BurdaDruck.

Gallus Intros the new Smartfire at Gallus Innovation Days 2018 Gallus, a member of the Heidelberg Group, has launched a new water-based entry-level inkjet press on the first day of the “Gallus Innovation Days,” held in Switzerland. Already on the first day of the “Gallus Innovation Days”, almost 300 visitors came to the headquarters of Gallus to St. Gallen to see the innovations of the Swiss manufacturer of label printing machines. This year, Gallus, a member of the Heidelberg Group, continues this success story for the third time in an even larger exhibition area. During the “Gallus Innovation Days 2018”, which take place from 26 – 28 June 2018, Gallus print experts present how digitization will change the label industry and how Gallus is going to support their customers to manage this drastic industrial paradigm shift.

Gallus Smartfire

What would the Gallus Innovation Days be without a machine premiere? With the Gallus Smartfire, Gallus is presenting a starter model for digital narrow web label printing. This means, the Swiss full-range supplier is expanding its product portfolio with another digital printing press, which is deliberately positioned as an entry-level model. “With the Gallus Smartfire, we are also focussing on new target groups who are looking for a smart entry into digital label printing,” explains Michael Ring, Head of Digital Solutions at Gallus. “The Memjet technology allows us to offer an inkjet printing press that produces labels with a quality of 1600×1600 dpi while still keeping the investment costs at a low level.”

With this digital press, only a few prepress skills are required to create professional CMYK 4-color inkjet labels. Just as easy are the replacements of the ink-containers and the exchange of the print head. Furthermore, this machine also delivers finished die cut labels, all produced in one pass and ready for shipping on the reel, just like Gallus customers know it from the other presses. For this purpose, a finishing unit is attached, on which the labels are laminated and cut. This can be either done individually by the integrated cutting plotter or by fast and cost-effective punching with the semi-rotary die cutter at the end of the inline finishing unit. So, one thing is for sure: Proven Memjet print quality matched with profound Gallus label know-how makes the Smartfire the ideal entry-level machine to get started in digital label printing.

Gallus Labelmaster Advanced

Hot on the heels of the successful debut of the Gallus Labelmaster

Advanced during Labelexpo 2017 in Brussels, this machine will now be presented to the public in St.Gallen with automatic transverse and longitudinal register control, which further emphasises the ease of use of this press. The process change from flexographic printing unit to screen printing unit is easy to handle, too. With just a few simple steps, the two printing units can be exchanged using a sliding carriage and then be reconnected to the machine base. Equipped with one screen printing unit and eight flexographic printing units, the Labelmaster Advanced presented in the Print Media Center at Gallus impresses with its high final speed and its absolute register accuracy, without any manual readjustment after each job change.

Gallus Labelfire 340

Additional inline finishing functions for the industrial digital label production on the Gallus Labelfire are some of the main topics in the Print Media Center at Gallus Innovation Days. Upstream, this hybrid printing machine is equipped with a fully integrated screen printing unit, which enables a professional opaque white on transparent substrates that can be digitally printed over.

ME Printer July 2018

The Gallus Smartfire prints with the well-proven Memjet print heads with water-based inks, which means that these labels are eco-friendly and leave a minimal ecological footprint. The Smartfire uses an ordinary power outlet, needs no exhaust equipment, is extremely compact, and emits no

VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), thus making it the perfect press for any work environment. “The name says it all, the Smartfire is absolutely easy to operate via a self-explanatory touch panel,” says Michael Ring.

Factors Advancing the Slow Growing Banknotes Market Smithers Pira has analysed four industry trends that are combating declining growth rates for the global banknotes market. According to “The Future of Banknotes to 2023” – a new market report from Smithers Pira – the global market size for banknotes is forecast to increase from $9.7 billion in 2018 to $11.1 billion in 2023; an annual growth rate of 2.7%. Africa is forecast to grow by 4.5%, but all other regions will drop below 3%, most noticeably North America with a negative growth rate at -0.9%.

ME Printer July 2018

The slow growth forecasts are symptomatic of disruption in the industry, and have led to dramatic restructuring along the three major drivers: Meeting demand Providing security Achieving new efficiencies

26

Much of the declining growth can be attributed to the range of new payment technologies on offer. Credit and debit card spending is on the rise, and in particular the arrival and acceptance of contactless payment is eroding the use of cash for smaller value transactions. This is being joined by new electronic platforms, such as: Mobile wallets - Apple Pay, Samsung Pay Mobile direct billing - M-Pesa, Airtel

Mobile payment - WeChat, Alipay, WhatsApp, Google Tez, Venmo, Square The attitudes to payment of the millennial cohort – those born between 1980 and 2000 – is having a profound impact on the banknote printing industry. Millennials often described as ‘digital and mobile natives,’ and are much more ready to use online shopping, or electronic payment in retail stores. The overall value of e-commerce transactions worldwide continues with a double-digit growth yearon-year. Despite these challenges, Smithers Pira pinpoints four areas of development that are fighting the perception that the use, and profitability of printing cash is in terminal decline.

Security by Design

In recent years, banknote suppliers have responded to market factors and central bank objectives by aligning design, security and supply chain considerations, leading to a concept called ‘security by design’. This covers all stakeholders from initial design to substrate and feature selection, through manufacturing processes to authentication and banknote processing. Recent banknote designs increasingly explore the concept of

creating similar effects with different technologies applicable to different stages of the production value chain. Designs are simple, interesting and exciting, while containing novel optical and covert features. New effects catch the eye more instantaneously than old features. For the public to remember and authenticate banknotes effectively with minimal effort, the features on the note must interact with the user and within the features themselves. Moving forward, banknote designs will be characterised by: More and brighter colours More abstract images More vertical orientation A more diverse selection of portrait subjects – in particular more female characters from history The key takeaway is there will be an increased emphasis on innovative design as a confidencebuilding tool, aiming to engage the public in note authentication.

Durability in Note Construction

Fitness criteria help to determine whether a banknote is suitable for recirculation or should be replaced by a new one, as well

as to improve efficiencies in the processing speed and sorting accuracy of ATMs and note sorting systems. In addition, security features can be better authenticated on fit and clean banknotes. Stricter fitness criteria can act to reduce the lifecycle of banknotes, forcing issuing authorities to produce higher volumes to meet demand. In response, demand has increased for durable substrates in the form of polymer, composites and paper treated with varnishes and coatings that increase the lifecycle of a banknote. The net effect of longer-life banknotes and shrinking demand is a decline in the number of printed banknotes annually, at net lower costs. Sharply improved technical capabilities of ATMs, note sorting systems and their embedded sensors have created the opportunity to collect vast amounts of data on a wide variety of topics pertaining to banknotes, including velocity, frequency, fitness patterns, geographic movement and so on. Networked machines are able to analyse in real time what the status of currency efficiency and security is, allowing central banks to make better-informed decisions regarding inventory, ordering frequency, effectiveness of security features and more.

Data Analytics to Forecast Demand

On a similar theme, advances in data analytics machine learning and artificial intelligence have

led to an emerging use of data analytics to forecast demand, optimise the cash cycle and measure anti-counterfeiting effectiveness. This is seeing established companies in the banknote printing sector diversifying their business offerings focusing further down the use chain; as well as creating a niche for new specialist entrants. Illustrative examples include: Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) Currency Technology division. This offers big data analytics solutions that allow many processes in the cash cycle to be optimised, via the application of predictive analytics. De La Rue’s – DLR Analytics business unit is also applying advanced statistical analysis tools to help central banks make better informed decisions and improve the cash cycle. It allows benchmarking in a global or regional context across a network of over 65 central banks. UK-based 7 Layer Solutions is a developer specialising in software application development

projects for the cash logistics sector. Its NoteChain platform is a note quality, fitness monitoring and benchmarking system for Intelligent Currency Solutions (ICS), designed to enable a central bank to assess the quality of notes in circulation.

Private Sector Priorities

Volume decline, new counterfeiting threats, improved sensor capabilities and adoption of data analytics are leading to industry restructuring, including acquisitions, divestitures and closures, strategic collaboration among all stakeholders, rise of consulting services and intensified competition. Some countries are taking control of domestic banknote printing and production. This can pose a challenge for established banknote printing companies that have often taken on this work, especially for state in transition economies. For example, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) opened its first banknote printing plant in 2017, aspiring to become the premium choice of central banks in the Middle East for banknote production.

ME Printer July 2018

Africa still presents a commercial proposition for the future. De La Rue is investing $14 million in the expansion of its banknote and security printing facility in Kenya, with the intent of becoming a regional hub for East Africa and the continent. And Crane Currency’s new $100 million facility has been located on Malta, both because of substantial government subsidies and proximities to Africa, and the Middle East.

Exploiting the Flexible Packaging Shift Written by Erik Andriessen, Marketing Manager at Contiweb Whilst digital media alternatives have negatively influenced many print sectors, for packaging it’s a positive – if disruptive – factor.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone with an interest in print that packaging is experiencing a golden age. Rising at a steady 2.9% yearon-year, Smithers Pira forecasts the global market will be worth $980 billion by 2022. If you drill down further, the growth of the flexible packaging sector is even more pronounced; with a predicted annual growth rate of 4.3%, by 2022 it should claim a healthy $283 billion share of the near trillion-dollar market.

There is no digital alternative to packaging. But as online media encourages purchase decision to be increasingly image-led, and online sales continue to grow with no signs of abating, packaging becomes more and more crucial. Providing an essential billboard for brands – who face fierce competition whether their storefront is bricks-and-mortar or online – packaging must equally be practical and economical for transportation. Whilst the status-quo is disrupted, there’s an opportunity for those who want to grasp it. Food packaging represents the majority of flexible packaging applications. Barrier properties can be tailored to keep food safe and appetizing. Being lightweight and using less material, its more economical

to produce and transport. Busy, hectic lifestyles have many of us reaching for pre-portioned, prepeeled, pre-sliced or pre-cooked foods; anything to make the job of putting a meal on the table a little quicker and easier. For those who don’t even make it to the table, there’s a vast range of portable alternatives. As obesity figures rise, portion control help comes in the form of different sized packaging. All this need for convenience is a significant factor in growing flexible packaging sales. As marketers look for new ways to grab attention and consumers demand more choice, there’s a growing SKU count and huge variety in the shape, size and design of products. This doesn’t just apply to food packaging, but other significant sectors in flexible packaging including beverages, cosmetics and toiletries, pharmaceuticals and medical, pet food, tobacco and other non-food products see the same trend.

North America’s sales volume accounted for the highest market share (26.52%) in 2016, followed by Europe. At present, the manufactures of Mobile Photo Printer are concentrated in Japan, North America, and Asia Other. Japan is the largest production area

in the world, which occupied about 50.77% in 2016. The following areas are North America. The global leading players in this market are Canon, Fujifilm, Polaroid, and HP. Despite the presence of competition problems, due to the increasing

demand for leading-edge, effective products, investors are still optimistic about this area; the future will still have more new investment enter the field. In the next five years, the consumption volume will keep increasing, as well as the consumption value.

WhatsApp Business: Talk to Customers in the Same Way as Friends Written by Job-Wizards.com WhatsApp Business reaches people where they constantly are anyway: on their smartphone. WhatsApp Business could even replace email at some point. After all, 1.3 billion people worldwide already use WhatsApp. It is currently only available for Android, but a version for iOS is in development: WhatsApp Business is a free app that has been developed exclusively for SME owners. The app simplifies customer communication, because it features tools that make it easier to automate, sort and quickly answer messages.

Real-Time Marketing Just Got Easier

Many of the tools now offered by WhatsApp Business have long since been used in email marketing. That is why the app is especially suitable for smaller companies, because just one account and one telephone number are supported. It is free to download and use the app. This makes WhatsApp Business an additional, easy-to-use channel in communication between companies and their customers and a promising new option alongside the telephone, email and Facebook channels. WhatsApp Web will be of interest to anyone who doesn’t like writing on their smartphone, because it allows users to type messages in the normal way using the computer keyboard.

The Quickest Type of Company Presentation

The simple WhatsApp Business functions make it possible to inspire customers and business partners with a wide range of interesting content. Four companies are showing how it is done and showcasing innovative ideas that could certainly be used by SMEs as a creative help for getting started. The Dutch airline KLM sends all relevant data to its passengers via WhatsApp Business. Particularly important here is the fact that the booking confirmation, check-in notification, boarding pass and flight status can be found in one single thread and are thus always to hand. BookMyShow is an Indian company that sells cinema tickets online. Customers are sent a QR code via WhatsApp Business, which is then presented when they arrive at the cinema. This has led to the development of a new communication channel: customers get in touch with the company via WhatsApp – and the company moves part of its customer service operation to this channel. OYO is a platform on which more than 8,000 hotels can be booked. Customers who have made their booking here are given the option to conduct all communication via

WhatsApp to make it as simple and convenient as possible. The mayonnaise manufacturer Hellmann’s has significantly increased its customer base using WhatsApp Business. Prospective customers were able to post their phone number and a photo of the contents of their refrigerator via WhatsApp. A chef then immediately got in touch with the users and both of them – connected via WhatsApp – prepared a meal together.

The Useful Features of WhatsApp Business

Answers to frequently asked questions are stored as a template and can be quickly accessed at all times. Greetings and out-of-office messages – like those familiar from email marketing – are now also possible for mobile devices. Customers have the peace of mind that they are in contact with a real company, because the WhatsApp profile is identified as a verified business account. This allows users to see at first glance that they are not communicating with a fake account. WhatsApp Business can be used with a landline number. The app shows how many messages have been sent and read, making it easy to compile statistics within the app.

ME Printer July 2018

In contrast to what is possible in the private WhatsApp profiles, a business can create a more comprehensive presentation in the Business account. The company profile features address, website, email address and a brief company description. Measures are being prepared to verify companies that use WhatsApp Business. WhatsApp users will then always be able to tell – probably by means of a small green symbol that appears next to the company name – that they are communicating with an official business account.
