Fogra, the Research Institute for Media Technologies has tested the highest-performing swissQprint large format printer according to ISO Standard 20690. The results demonstrate Swiss UV inkjet system's outstanding energy efficiency. Fogra experts that act on behalf of Swiss manufacturer swissQprint have tested a Nyala series LED UV printer according to ISO 20690 2018. This new standard specifies methods for defining the energy consumption of digital printers and therefore provides a comparison of the operating costs and ecological footprints of such machines. After completing various evaluation tests at swissQprint, the Fogra experts gave an “excellent” rating regarding the energy efficiency of the Nyala large format printer. For example, the printer produces 65 square metres per kilowatt-hour in speed printing mode. This evidently has nothing to do with productivity as a Nyala can turn out a maximum of 206 square metres per hour. The standardised measurement includes 4 different printer statuses to model realistic system usage. To guarantee that results are consistent, the experts used 4 different printing modes numerous times with a standardised print file. ME Printer September 2018

The “outstanding energy efficiency” certificate for Nyala implicitly applies to all other swissQprint machines that use LED curing due to their similar construction and particularly since Nyala is the highestperforming model in the range.

Heidelberg Shows Off Digital Solutions and “Smart Print Shop” at Customer Events in Japan Over 450 visitors experienced how productivity can be significantly increased with digitized and automated processes at the open house at Heidelberg Japan in Tokyo at the end of July. Under the motto “Smart Print Shop” with “Push to Stop”, the guests from Japan and Asia saw how an integrated workflow incorporates all processes and optimizes the overall equipment efficiency (OEE). Push to Stop is setting new rules for the game: whereas in the past the operator had to manually initiate a large number of steps in the production process, now he only needs to intervene in the automated process chain as necessary. Thanks to intelligent networking and automation, the machines can organize and handle the production process on their own. This goes as far as autonomous printing and has the potential to double the OEE. Heidelberg has sold over 400 machines suitable for Push to Stop since it was introduced at drupa 2016.

ME Printer September 2018

Japanese and Asian print shops are already highly industrialized but want further productivity increases to remain competitive and be profitable. They saw the answer at the open house in the shape of a Speedmaster XL 106 eight-color machine with perfecting, which independently produced twelve magazine signatures with a run

6

length of 150 sheets within 30 minutes. This record was possible thanks to the high level of automation of the machine, standardized jobs, and the integration into the Prinect print shop workflow. The Speedmaster XL 106 was equipped with Prinect Press Center XL 2, Wallscreen XL, and Intellistart 2 as well as the Prinect Inpress Control 2 inline spectral measurement and control system. The innovative DryStar LED UV drying technology resulted in instantly dry sheets in the delivery, which were sent directly for further processing in the postpress machines also integrated into the workflow – the Stahlfolder KH 82 folding machine and Polar cutting systems. Saphira coordinated consumables from the Lifecycle Solutions division also optimized the overall process. The new Versafire EV and Versafire EP digital printing systems were presented at the open house and printed 28 different jobs on a wide range of substrates and with different applications. The Versafire EV is aimed at customers who want to realize creative applications and enhanced business models. The Versafire EP is designed for flexible production and maximum performance.

When asked about their impressions, the visitors expressed their positive thoughts: Heidelberg is the technology leader that is consistently driving the digital transformation and in this way setting standards in the print media industry. The company also proved this at IGAS, which took place in Tokyo around the same time, from 26 to 31 July 2018. The audience there was amazed by the Primefire 106 presentation using virtual reality (VR). As the first commercially available industrial inkjet digital printing system in 70 x 100 cm format, the Heidelberg Primefire 106 allows print shops to produce an increasing number of variants with declining run lengths in a profitable way, bring products to the market faster, and reduce logistics costs through printon-demand functions. Sample runs can also be produced quickly and easily for market research purposes or decision making. The “Primefire 106 Super Journey” VR shows were all booked out down to the last place and over 1,700 visitors experienced the machine and all its details up close and in 3D. Heidelberg Japan is a full subsidiary of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). It is headquartered in Tokyo and has branches in Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sendai. Over 200 employees look after more than 1,500 customers.

SAi Partners with Avery Dennison to Develop RIP Software SA International (SAi), the leading provider of software solutions for the sign-making, digital printing and CNC machining industries, has partnered with Avery Dennison to develop specialized software for the company’s TrafficJet Print System. The FlexiSIGN & PRINT Avery Dennison TrafficJet and FlexiPRINT Avery Dennison TrafficJet software will feature on the new system, which is designed to allow the production of certified output for the highlyregulated global traffic signage market. As well as incorporating the TrafficJet large format digital printer, the bundle includes the speciallydesigned versions of SAi’s software, which is optimized for traffic sign production. The Avery Dennison TrafficJet Print System’s CMSpot6 ink setup uses six dedicated spot colors that match the regulated traffic signage. Utilizing FlexiSIGN

& PRINT Avery Dennison TrafficJet edition, users can extend this color gamut to create custom blends from those spot colors, enabling the production of additional regulated colors, such as purple, orange, and gray, or produce process colors on reflective or commercial graphics. This offers the opportunity to efficiently produce a wider range of traffic signage that adheres to required specifications. Additionally, unique to this system, is an ink estimation tool which allows users to set ink limits indepen-

dently and provides accurate estimation of ink usage for each print job – thereby delivering greater control and further flexibility. TrafficJet Print System also incorporates a time-saving Spot Color Mapping tool which offers easier mapping between current or international sign databases by automatically mapping to the CMSpot6™ Ink Setup. This improves production workflow efficiencies by eliminating the time needed to reassign spot colors or use expensive third-party color mapping software.

Adobe Announces Open Platform for Experience Design With Adobe XD CC The open platform will be made publicly available later this year, but Adobe is already working with early developer partners to build plugins for XD, including Microsoft, Trello, UserTesting, Airtable, Dribbble, Silicon Publishing, Slope, inMotionNow, Astute Graphics, Anima and Google Cloud, along with its own Behance and Stock services.

In addition, Adobe XD now tightly integrates with designers’ existing workflows via other popular collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams (Adobe’s preferred collabora-

tion service), Slack and Jira Software Cloud, making it easy for designers to collaborate with stakeholders across their organizations. “We are committed to developing a rich ecosystem around Adobe XD to fit the modern designer’s needs,” said Scott Belsky, chief product officer and executive vice president, Creative Cloud at Adobe. “Delivering seamless, engaging user experiences is imperative for brands, companies and all digital products, and Adobe is focused on serving designers with powerful collaboration capabilities.”

Coming later this year, developers in Jira can easily access information on shared Adobe XD prototypes, and design specs, streamlining the handoff process between designers and developers. These solutions complement a series of integrations Adobe announced earlier this year, offering friction-free workflows with popular third-party tools and services such as Dropbox, Sketch, Zeplin, Avocode, ProtoPie and Sympli.

ME Printer September 2018

Adobe has announced that Adobe XD is opening its platform to enable users to customize their tools with an ecosystem of community and partner-built plugins. Leveraging Adobe XD APIs, developers can now build on top of Adobe XD, adding new features, automating workflows and connecting XD to the tools and services designers use every day.

To streamline and reduce friction in collaboration, Adobe announced add-ins for Microsoft Teams, Slack and Jira. Available now, Microsoft Teams and Slack now both offer richer previews of Creative Cloud assets and notifications when comments are made on Adobe XD prototypes.

Asia-Pacific region is expected to witness the highest growth and maintain its dominance in the forecasted period. “It is important for the players within the UAE to closely look at their markets and its potential and capitalise on the same by leveraging innovative cutting-edge technologies. This will further help their own industry and thereby significantly contribute towards the economy. ME Printer September 2018

The key objective of textile printing is to produce a fabric with an attractive design and defined pattern. 12

“We have seen a growth in demand from across various vertical industries and we foresee this growth due to the rapid expansion of retail malls and hospitality industries. Our trade show SGI Dubai witnesses new exhibitors each year and that is a key indicator for us,” stated Sharif Rahman, CEO, International Expo Consults. Currently, the Asia Pacific region has the largest market share for textile printing, followed by Europe and North America. Within Asia, China and India alone hold the largest market share for textile printing

With the fast-growing population not only in the Middle East but across the globe would further increase the demand and should plan ahead to capitalise on this opportunity. Progress in technology paired with increasing method of printing is driving the global textile printing market,” added Rahman. SGI Dubai 2019, is one such destination, a unique trade show that actually addresses the needs of the textile printing industry stakeholders and will bring the best players in the industry from across the globe. From among all the other forms of printing digital printing is expected to garner the highest growth in the coming years. On the bases of technology, the global market for textile printing can be split into direct printing, white/ colour discharge and resist printing.

Other forms of printing include block printing, roller printing, duplex printing, screen printing, stencil printing, transfer printing, blotch printing, jet spray printing and electrostatic printing. SGI 2018 was a huge success with close to 330 international and regional exhibitors showcasing the latest in UV printing, textile printing, retail, LED and various signage technologies. The highlight of the on-site demonstrations will be an automated workflow solution for the UJF-7151plus, developed jointly by Mimaki and German company Robominds GmbH. Using a robotic arm, the printer is loaded and unloaded automatically via an interface solution. This reduces machine make-ready times and will further increase efficiency levels of Mimaki’s systems.

ME Printer September 2018

“As a trendsetting and customeroriented company, Mimaki is pursuing an IoT strategy that creates a model for the future of integrated workflow solutions for the plastics industry, among others,” explains Uwe Niklas, General Manager Marketing &

20

Sales at Mimaki Deutschland GmbH. “By leveraging the long-standing and trusting partnerships with our customers and partners, we are showing innovative application opportunities that demonstrate the scope of our systems, in order to enable customers to cover a broad spectrum of applications with a single system."

MDL commands are used to control Mimaki printers via the customer’s production systems and peripherals. They take over control of the printer by launching production and adjusting position and height of the substrate table. In addition, they provide information about remaining ink levels and report print errors.

With its IoT strategy, Mimaki aims to help its customers connect their printing systems to achieve unmanned on-demand production and mass personalisation by integrating robots, conveyor belts, testing technologies, sensors and other peripherals with production lines.

Customers who use MDL commands are able to build a perfect system for their needs with Mimaki’s software development kit, which can be downloaded from the Mimaki Global website.

The first two solutions to emerge from this new development are MDL commands and the Mimaki Job Controller.

Mimaki Job Controller is a software solution that communicates with the printer in order to transmit accurate printing data and printing conditions. It can also start production automatically, creating a link along the production line between the printer and the robot in order to feed in print jobs via a conveyor belt and collect the finished printed output. “Digital Printing Connection enables production with fewer personnel. Our customers need to simplify and streamline their processes, since printers, which were typically deployed on a standalone basis, are now connected to their peripherals. This concept promotes on-demand production and mass personalisation,” concluded Niklas.

Cosmo Films Launches Heat Resistant Films Cosmo Films has introduced BOPP based heat resistant (HR) films. The films have been engineered to work as a printing layer replacing BOPET film in multi-layer laminates for various packaging applications in both food and non-food segments. The new heat-resistant films are clear, non-heat sealable and both sides treated films with excellent printability and go mostly for reverse printing. The thermally stable films have excellent slip properties and good machinability and therefore work well on high-speed FFS packaging machines. Available in 15, 18, 20 microns; the films are well suited for both adhesive as well as extrusion lamination and offer good lamination bond.

The company has also launched a barrier version of the film. The transparent BOPP based barrier HR film has excellent oxygen barrier properties and offers OTR of less than 100cc/m2/day. The film has good grease resistance that comes in handy for oily snack food packaging; which is a big application area of this film. Speaking on the development, Pankaj Poddar, the CEO of Cosmo Films, said, “Homogeneous structures are becoming increasingly preferable as recyclability of multilayer packaging becomes the need of the hour. Polypropylene structures or even Polypropylene plus Polyethylene structures are better placed from recyclability perspective because they belong to the same polymer

family. Cosmo Films with more than 100 years of collective OPP experience now stands in an advantageous position to develop specialised polypropylene films aimed at a sustainable future."

manroland Goss Web Systems Shows its New Mobile MainPad Maintenance Tablet At the expert panel on the subject of “Digitalisation: A lasting impulse for innovation or a threat to jobs?”, manroland Goss web systems presented its new mobile MainPad maintenance tablet. Together with the development partner XITASO, the Augsburg-based world market leader in web offset printing introduced its new product in the framework of a presentation followed by a panel discussion on 3rd September 2018. The importance of this subject was also underlined by the visit of the Bavarian minister for economic affairs, Franz

Josef Pschierer, and further guests of honour. With its Maintellisense automation strategy, manroland Goss web systems pursues the aim of providing intelligent machines in the near future. This aim requires a central hub for all the relevant information – with the mobile maintenance pad, MainPad, fulfilling exactly this function. How can the time between the occurrence of a malfunction and troubleshooting on complex systems be reduced? To this end, the MainPad offers numerous features – reading and acknowledging all alarm messages at the place

of the malfunction, direct access to all necessary documentations and drawings, direct and fast connection to the TeleSupportCenter (TSC) via “remote support calls” and direct video communication with the TSC as well as the fast transmission of documents between technicians on site and the TSC – everything directly on the machine, i.e. at the place of the malfunction.

ME Printer September 2018

The concrete customer benefit is easy to define: The MainPad ensures improved communication through the central provision of all the relevant information and functions (reducing effort and increasing ease of use) of maintenance which leads to a significant reduction of effort and increases ease of use. The MainPad constitutes another important step towards costs reductions and increasing availability. The new MainPad is part of the groundbreaking “Maintellisense” project. The name of this project is derived from the terms “maintenance”, “intelligence” and “sense” – which have to be intelligently combined in order provide intelligent machinery and “productive maintenance” in future.

3D Printers in The Wild, What Can Go Wrong? Written by Xavier Mertens, a senior handler for the SANS Internet Storm Center (ISC) and Freelance Cyber Security Consultant My colleague Richard wrote a quick diary recently about an interesting information that we received from one of our readers. It’s about a huge amount of OctoPrint interfaces that are publicly facing the Internet. Octoprint is a web interface for 3D printers that allows to control and monitor all features of the printer. They are thousands of Octoprint instances accessible without any authentication reported by Shodan. So, what can go wrong with this kind of interface? It’s just another unauthenticated access to an online device. Sure, but the printer owners could face very bad situations. The interface allows downloading the 3D objects loaded in the printer. Those objects are in G-code format. To make it simple, G-code is a language in which people tell computerized machine tools how to make something. G-code files are simple text files and are not encrypted.

ME Printer September 2018

We are facing here the first issue: G-code files can be downloaded and lead to potentially trade

22

secret data leak. Indeed, many companies R&D departments are using 3D printers to develop and test some pieces of their future product. Here is an example of G-code file rendered via an online tool. If the authentication is completely disabled, it is possible to upload G-code files and… print them! What if an anonymous person sends a malicious G-code file to the printer and instructs to print it while nobody is around? There were bad stories of low-cost 3D printers which simply burned. Worse, what if the attacker downloads a G-code file, alters it and re-uploads it? By changing the Gcode instructions, you will instruct the device to print the object but the altered one won’t have the same physical capabilities and could be a potential danger once used. Think about 3D-printer guns but also 3D-printed objects used in drones. Drone owners are big fans of self-printed hardware. Finally, OctoPrint offers a monitoring feature based on an

embedded webcam which can affect the remote user privacy. So, how do you protect your OctoPrint instance? The documentation says about access control: “When Access Control is enabled, anonymous users (not logged in) will only see the read-only parts of the UI which are the following” (followed by a long list of features). Most critical is accessing to the webcam and downloading G-code files. As suggests the documentation: “If you plan to have your OctoPrint instance accessible over the internet, always enable Access Control.”

Fast-Growing Inkjet Market to Pass $100 Billion in 2023 The global market for inkjet printing will grow at a rate of 9.4% year-on-year and will be worth $109 billion in 2023, according to The Future of Inkjet Printing to 2023 a brand new market report from Smithers Pira. This contrasts positively with the general outlook for the print industry where growth is occurring at a more moderate 0.8% annually. This brand new study provides expert qualitative analysis of the market drivers and technology developments that are underpinning this evolution, and quantifies them across all key metrics in an exclusive dataset. In 2018, the total value of inkjet printing in graphics and packaging applications will reach $69.6 billion, with a total print volume equivalent to 749 billion A4 prints. This volume will consume some 103,700 tonnes of ink, with the endusers spending $8.7 billion, while the market for new inkjet equipment will be $3.6 billion. Dr. Sean Smyth, print consultant at Smithers Pira author of the report, comments, “The economics and reliability of inkjet are consistently improving as a result of heavy investment in printing heads, machinery, inks and drying systems, associated software and – increasingly – substrates. There is strong growth across most of these disparate activities

because the non-impact process is very flexible and capable of printing at high-quality and speed, making it suitable to print many products, while the cost position is becoming more economic against most analogue printing alternatives.” “Inkjet is winning market share from analogue processes as well as opening up new applications, with new routes to market and workflows developing. In packaging, changing retail supply chains along with strong growth in e-commerce – now including mobile-enabled ‘m-commerce’ – are pushing further adoption of inkjet as brands and retailers look to communicate with end users in new ways. Equipment manufacturers and converters are exploring new functions enabled by versioning and personalisation on packs as packaging is used in new ways to engage with consumers,” Dr. Smyth added. With the potential of inkjet – principally in short run and variable data printing – increasingly appreciated it is changing printer business models, disrupting established supply chains, and adding new value-adding options. While advertising will continue to be the largest end-use application across 2018-2023, the most rapid growth will come from wider use of inkjet in:

Packaging Books Commercial printing. Beyond these core applications developers are exploring ways of leveraging the flexibility of inkjet to open new market applications, such as: 3D printing Automotive and transport printing Biomedical printing Ceramics printing Décor and laminate printing Direct-to-shape printing Glass printing Printed electronics Textile printing Many of these opportunities will require integrating the inkjet process with robotics aligning with the wider Industry 4.0 trend. The Airbus A320 family paint shop in Hamburg, for example, has employed direct inkjet printing to decorate aircraft, with a lower weight than traditional paint or stencils on the tail of a plane. ME Printer September 2018

This and other future growth opportunities are critically assessed within the Smithers Pira report. Specific analysis and data (by value and volume) is given across 11 end-use applications, over 30 regional and key national markets; five print equipment types for 2013-2023.

Decoration and Sustainability to Boost Outlook for Metal Packaging Five technology innovations and trends are creating new value in metal packaging, making it a more attractive option for consumers and manufacturers. According to The Future of Metal Packaging and Coatings to 2023, the global metal packaging and coatings market is valued at almost $105.5 billion in 2018. Total value is forecast to increase at 1.6% year-on-year to 2023, pushing overall value to $114.4 billion.

ME Printer September 2018

Much of this figure can be attributed to beverage cans that continue to dominate the market, holding a share of almost 45%.

24

Although global demand for beverage cans has been affected by falling sales of many forms of carbonated drinks, it has also benefited from the surging popularity of energy drinks and craft beer. Future growth in demand is likely to come from other sectors of the beverages industry, such as packaged water, wine and RTD (ready-to-drink) tea and coffee drinks. Asia will remain the bestperforming region within the global metal packaging market in the period leading up to 2023.

During this time, value sales are anticipated to increase by more than 18%, as the region overtakes North America to become the world’s largest. Smithers Pira research reveals five trends and technology developments that are influencing the metal packaging market landscape.

have been adopted for leading brands. Tactile effects are usually created using an overvarnish, which changes the appearance and feel of the can itself – for applications such as soft drinks vendors are often keen to add a ‘wet’ or ‘frosted’ look to their packaging.

Decorative Techniques – A World of Creativity

Another notable example has been the ‘Matte Impact’ effect developed by Ardagh Group – this creates a surface structure for the can which reflects light differently and therefore provides a matte appearance.

To gain a competitive advantage, many brand owners are now focusing more upon improved visuals for metal packaging products. Many have embraced digital printing, which offers numerous opportunities for developing bolder and more striking visuals, and eye-catching colours. Not only do metal cans offer a 360-degree canvas, but digital printing is ideally suited for many of the limited-edition products now being launched across the food and beverages industry, due to its effectiveness over shorter print runs. The metal packaging industry is also making greater use of tactile features that appeal to a range of senses. Techniques such as embossing and debossing have become more widespread, and

Aerosol Innovation

The aerosols market, which will increase across 2018-2023, continues to witness the emergence of product innovations aimed at improving convenience for the consumer and addressing environmental concerns. Examples have included: The replacement of hydrocarbons with compressed gases as the propellant Innovation in bi-compartmental aerosol technology, which incorporates a plastic inner bag to separate the product from the propellant.

During the next five years, penetration of dual-dispensing aerosol systems is expected to increase within applications such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and technical products, like glues.

Lightweighting

Lightweighting has been a leading trend within the metal packaging industry over the past decade, in sectors ranging from food and beverage cans to aerosols. This enables packaging manufacturers and brand owners to reduce their environmental footprint and therefore improve their sustainability credentials, while also reducing costs. By developing more lightweight containers, less material is used, while the energy used for distribution and logistics purposes is also cut. Reductions in weight have been achieved via measures such as switching from steel to lighterweight aluminium, a trend which is being led by leading metal packaging manufacturers, such as Crown and Ardagh. Another company that has helped to pioneer lighter-weight aerosol cans is Ball Corporation, via its ReAl range. First launched in 2014, ReAl cans feature 25% recycled material and weigh 11% less than standard products.

Metal packaging products enjoy a tremendously positive image as far as environmental sustainability and especially from a recycling

perspective, since metal is a permanent material that can be recycled many times without impinging on its performance. Aluminium beverage cans represent the world’s most recycled drinks container, and global recycling rates have now reached 75%. Over 3 million tonnes of aluminium and steel are now recycled in Europe every year, while the industry continues to work toward a recycling target of 80% of all rigid metal packaging by 2020.

Switch Away from BPA

Food cans are typically coated with an organic layer to protect the can’s integrity from the effects of the food and to ensure

that a chemical reaction does not take place between the two. The metal packaging industry is still under pressure to substitute away from bisphenol-A (BPA) over reported, yet unproven, threats the chemical poses. In several regions this has led to scrutiny from regulators, lobbying by health advocacy groups – and consumer pressure to develop alternatives. Initial efforts have focussed on deploying bisphenol-S (BPS), with brands using it now being able to use the phrase ‘free from BPA’ in marketing. The two chemicals are similar however and as it has become a viable alternative tests on BPS are also being commissioned. The industry is increasingly looking at acrylic or polyester materials for can linings as the long-term solution. ME Printer September 2018

Campbell Soup Company is one notable example here, phasing out BPA by July 2017. There is no single drop-in replacement however, for example Campbell has had to tailor its linings to minimise reactions with certain acidic foods in its range.

Sustainability the Greatest Risk and Opportunity for Tissue Manufacturers Smithers Pira explores the innovative areas of development that are pushing the tissue manufacturing market in new directions. According to a new strategic technical study from Smithers Pira - The Future of Tissue Manufacturing to 2023 - tissue manufacturing continues to receive interest in almost all geographic sectors. Many new producers are entering the emerging markets as they look to pounce on the less developed regions with high growth rates. As tissue operations continue to attract new investments from additional corporations, the resulting competition is creating a highly challenging business environment. Based upon its in-depth study, Smithers Pira identifies five trends that are influencing the way tissue manufacturers operate now and will do in the coming years.

Sustainability – Risk and Opportunity

ME Printer September 2018

Sustainability is becoming the greatest risk to and opportunity for tissue manufacturers. Consumers, brands and governments are increasingly aware of the threat posed by global warming resulting in an increased focus on

26

sustainability, especially in natural products. The opportunity is that tissue paper comes from a renewable and natural source. The risk is that consumers could come to see it as unsustainable due to poor fibre sourcing and lack of tissue product recycling. Significant inroads have been made to define sustainable and responsible fibre sources. Of the 35 companies audited by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2017, eight were tissue makers. The market demands improvement in the sustainability of tissue production, this is focussing on three key factors: Fibre sourcing Minimising water consumption Reducing energy use during production. Sustainability measures will grow in influence on producers as they continue to compete on product cost and performance.

Fibre Sourcing

Pulp fibre is the fundamental basis of all tissue products, and represents the most substantial part of tissue making sustainability as the fibre sourcing, and energy use in production can be very significant. Initiatives like that from the WWF, Rainforest Alliance certification and the Forest Stewardship Council are increasingly recognised. Concerns remain however, and use of recycled paper pulp – though widespread in industrial tissue products – is limited by consumer attitudes. In contrast two main forces seem are driving the search for alternative fibre sources, which will pose new technical challenges for tissue manufacturers. The first is sustainability and a replacement for recycled fibre. Non-wood fibres can assuage the concern of consuming finite forest resources, without recycling. The second issue is merely economic use of resources and potential replacement of softwood fibres in areas they are scarce.

Sustainable Non-Virgin Wood Tissue Fibres

Non-wood fibre tissues are now entering consumer markets, trading on their environmental credentials for marketing. For example, Miamibased the Good Health Company introduced its Gesundheit! facial tissue in November 2017. This product is 80% pure virgin bamboo pulp that is 100% sustainable and biodegradable. Four examples: Bamboo plantations to replace cutting trees Biorefinery fibre – that is produced as a by-product of non-fossil fuel or feedstock production from renewable and carbon-neutral sources.

Cultivated Fibre Crops – Kenaf, Hemp, Hesperaloe

Water Consumption

Tissue mills are more commonly located close to the customer. This

The US and Mexico in particular have several tissue mills located in desert areas with no surface water sources. This concern is forecast to grow and spread to other regions across 20182023 as sustainability continues to become a more focused concern of consumers and governments. Activities to improve water sustainability or reduce water footprint include: Increased water recycling and water circuit closure. Closed water circuits in papermaking can increase the concentration of recycled fines and chemical species in solution resulting in problems from deposits Better cleaning of wastewater to reduce contaminants being recycled. Wastewater treatment and discharge, including sludge-

waste disposal, represent significant challenges for tissue and towel makers.

Energy Savings

Energy efficiency is one of the top environmental priorities that can be realising in mills. It can simultaneously yield cost savings, and improved output. The latest generation of integrated tissue mills have an advantage in that they avoid the cost of pulp drying in their supply chain and are more likely to be built with integrated solar, hydro or other non-fossil fuel energy supplies. Through air dried (TAD) tissues poses a particular problem for industry. TAD requires up to 3 times the energy per tonne but, the energy costs of TAD processes must be weighed against the potential reduced carbon footprint of less fibre per consumer use. TAD results in about 30% reduction in fibre use for equivalent application and can result in more uses per tonne, depending on how it is presented to the consumer.

ME Printer September 2018

Agricultural waste fibre – such as Straw, Stover, or Bagasse

results in some tissue machines operating in water-scarce regions making water consumption a key concern.
