E-COMMERCE PACKAGING GROWING BECAUSE OF ONLINE SHOPPING SALES

Although almost all online businesses have some elements in common – strong automation, effective quality management, impeccable customer care – online printing is not an exact science, nor does it provide for a common or standard organisational model that can be adopted and copied indefinitely. The internet is instead a powerful interactive channel and as such it must be understood, exploited and supported. Check out inside, what the real prospects for growth and development are in this area, and which investments have to be made.

OKI Europe Offers Free Media and Artwork to Support Businesses with Social Distancing Measures

4

OKI Europe is providing free media and artwork to help support businesses both during the COVID-19 pandemic and through the transition back to a new normality. Recognising that it can be challenging for businesses to create and implement vital social distancing signage quickly, OKI Europe has partnered with Floralabels to offer organisations free media and artwork to create self-adhesive floor stickers that can be printed quickly and easily from an A3 colour printer. This will enable businesses operating now and those re-opening after enforced closures to become

operational as quickly as possible while protecting the wellbeing of staff, customers and visitors. The complimentary media pack includes circular floor stickers measuring 285 x 285mm and rectangular banners measuring 215 x 900mm and 297 x 1,320mm. The free supporting artwork available includes eye-catching designs and messaging that reminds people to keep two metres apart and indicates where customers should stand to maintain a safe distance when queueing. “High impact visual communications are critical for encouraging social

distancing. Even as the strict controls start to be lifted, social distancing is likely to remain a requirement for some weeks, potentially months to come, so organisations need measures in place to encourage and remind staff and visitors to adhere to the rules,” says Ali Al-Salhi, Manager, Retail and Hospitality (Middle East). “By providing free media and supporting artwork to businesses now and throughout the transition back to a new form of ‘business-as-usual’, we can help minimise the time it takes to print and implement essential social distancing signage and support businesses to be operational while complying with the government regulations required to tackle the spread of Covid-19.” All supporting artwork has been tested using OKI’s award-winning C800 Series retail ready printers and the same highly durable self-adhesive Floralabels media included in the offer. To print the floor stickers, businesses will require access to a printer that has the capabilities to handle the media, formats and sizing of each sticker. Organisations that wish to take advantage of the offer should visit www.oki.com/me

Waterless Offset Printing at Gulf News Helps Conserve Water

located in the desert, water is a scarce resource, and implementing waterless offset printing in our new facility was an important decision, for us and for the planet.” Renyold, who has been with the company for 15 years and recently took over responsibility for managing the Cortina press, adds that other decision criteria were the reduced waste, lower emissions and overall lower environmental footprint achieved with Cortina waterless offset printing using Toray IMPRIMA plates. Quality was another important factor. “This configuration gives us a very high level of quality,” Renyold notes. “With the Toray IMPRIMA plates, we are able to produce a very fine dot, and dot gain is very low. We also use a 150-line screen. Together, that delivers exceptional quality.” Renyold points out that this elevated quality level has enabled the company to produce gain in revenue thanks to the ability to produce very high-quality commercial work, which he says they were not able to do before. “We also value our relationship with Toray,” Renyold states. “We had the task of converting from conventional offset to waterless offset, while at the same time adding commercial applications. So, a fair amount of

change was required. Toray worked very closely with us during the implementation process from the inception, helping us produce the best possible quality plates on our Kodak Generation plate setter and marks-3Zet waterless plate processor. It was an extremely smooth implementation with their help, and the fact that our climate requires us to have a completely climate-controlled facility also made implementation much easier, with very consistent humidity levels in our paper stock. To achieve the high quality, we aimed at with our new waterless offset platform, we needed the consumables – including plates, inks and paper – to be very stable and work well together. Toray worked with us to ensure we achieved that. They also visit us regularly to oversee our operation, and when we need help or support, they are right there to help us. Toray is truly a valued partner for Gulf News. As a side note, we share our enthusiasm for supporting the tennis sport. We continue as the Official Newspaper supporting both the WTA Tour and the ATP 500 World Tour, while Toray has been a supporter of the International Tennis Foundation (ITF) World Cup Junior Tennis Finals for boys and girls under 14.”

Gulf News, one of the leading English-language newspapers in the United Arab Emirates, has been using now for a couple of years the Koenig & Bauer Cortina waterless offset press with 12 towers, of which four are heatset, and is using the Toray IMPRIMA WA waterless offset plates. The company, with their facility in Dubai, has increased press utilization by adding commercial work serving the retail and magazine markets, including its own flagship weekly magazine, Friday. It also converted from broadsheet to Berliner format in conjunction with the installation of the new press, a format that is increasingly popular in the international newspaper industry. The company’s state-of-the-art printing plant, located about 40 km from the city center, was opened in 2012 and employs about 100 production staff. Overall corporate employment, including editorial staff, is at 800. “We are very proud of our highly automated, state-of-the-art plant here in Dubai,” said Robert Renyold, Production Manager. “Not only is the facility completely climate controlled, but automation is everywhere, from our print room to paper storage and reel handling, mostly done with robots. decision has been declared after the two-thirds majority of the votes was surpassed within a week of voting, opening on 24 April. With the current COVID-19 situation, a BIE General Assembly was impossible to stage, therefore officials had to vote remotely. A two-thirds majority of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) Member States voted, within a week, in favor of postponing the next World Expo by one year, “as proposed by the UAE Government

at the beginning of April and recommended by the BIE Executive Committee on April 21”. In its official statement, Expo 2020 Dubai declared that “We welcome this final decision, which allows participating countries around the globe to safely navigate the impact of COVID-19. This additional time also allows us to prepare to welcome a more united and resilient world in 2021, where we will collectively celebrate culture, creativity, and innovation”.

Cardbox Packaging Values Heidelberg as Partner in Packaging Printing

8

Cardbox Packaging is an international manufacturer of high-quality and technically sophisticated folding cartons with an annual turnover of around 45 million euros. The company operates production sites in Austria (Wolfsberg and Pinkafeld), the Czech Republic (Zádveřice), and most recently in the United States (Pittston, PA). Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) supported the setup in Pittston with extensive consulting services and an overall solution package comprising machines, service, and consumables. Cardbox Packaging is supported and advised by the Global and International Account Group at Heidelberg. The goal of Cardbox Packaging is to expand the business through the addition of new sites and to give each location a sustainable orientation. From the beginning, the company has counted on strategic partners for this purpose. “One of the main reasons for the success of our expansion strategy is that we brought the right partners on board, Greiner Packaging, and Heidelberg. Both are innovative and customer-oriented – and that’s how we see ourselves too,” says Roland Schöberl, CEO Cardbox Packaging Holding.

The joint venture with Greiner Packaging, one of the world’s leading providers of plastic packagings with sites around the globe, paved the way into the North American market. When another major customer, a brand owner based in Europe, indicated its intention to have its folding cartons produced at Cardbox Packaging in the future, the move across the Atlantic was a foregone conclusion. However, the market in the US works differently to Europe in all regards, whether consumers, clients, or suppliers. Cardbox Packaging therefore intensified its collaboration with Heidelberg as a global partner. At the same time as it was moving into the new building, Heidelberg supplied the equipment and established a lean production system with short supply chains and an efficient material flow. All processes were thoroughly analyzed and geared to economic efficiency. A Suprasetter CtP system is used for imaging in prepress, while a Speedmaster XL 106 six-color press runs with double coating and full logistics in the pressroom. The sheets are finished with the Promatrix CSB die cutter and the Diana Easy folder gluer in postpress. The Prinect Production

Manager workflow provides for integrating these processes. The CtP system was delivered with a plate supply contract, Saphira Pressroom Consumables are used and Cardbox Packaging also relies on the service of Heidelberg. “With the 36 Plus service agreement, we’re buying ourselves production reliability. We know from experience that it’s definitely worth it, because it helps us to avoid unscheduled downtimes,” says Roland Schöberl. The service package also includes production analyses of where and how further saving potentials can be realized. Cardbox Packaging also benefits from a streamlined supply chain and much lower complexity. “Instead of negotiating with several suppliers, we get everything from one source, from Heidelberg. This makes a lot of things easier. We save process costs, and the reduction of the workload in day-to-day business frees us up to focus on key topics such as new offerings for our customers,” says Roland Schöberl. Cardbox Packaging also built on the positive experience with Heidelberg equipment at its Austrian sites, with a Speedmaster XL 1066+L with full logistics in operation in Wolfsberg, and a Diana Pro as well as a Promatrix CSB in Pinkafeld. Around 20 employees work at the Pittston site, producing packaging primarily for brand manufacturers in the confectionery, food and cosmetics industries. “We respond flexibly to our customers’ wishes and offer customized, tailored solutions. However, the price is the ultimate deciding factor,” says Klaus Hockl, CEO Cardbox Packaging Holding. Due to the intensive competitive pressure, costings are done very precisely and the effort involved in the job change is very accurately analyzed. Particularly with short runs, every second counts. All print jobs – even non-food jobs – are therefore produced using food-safe, low-migration consumables. This shortens the changeover times and reduces the amount of makeready required. At the same time, Cardbox Packaging can reliably meet the high requirements of its food customers.

Commercial Printing Company Invests in Automation with the Speedmaster XL 75 Quality, service, speed – these are the pillars of printing company Offset Friedrich in Ubstadt-Weiher on which the family business has built its success and continues to grow, despite strong competition. “We strive to work profitably and need a high level of automation, which is something the Speedmaster XL 75 can deliver on a permanent basis,” confirms Managing Director Marcus Friedrich. He has been producing on a Speedmaster XL 75 five-color press with the new Prinect Press Center and the Heidelberg Operating System in a field test since mid-2019. The Push to Stop concept and the Prinect Production Manager provide optimal support for the printer. “What impressed us most about the Speedmaster XL 75, in addition to the new control system, is the increased printing speed of 16,500 sheets per hour, which we consistently and stably use for most substrates. We were also able to reduce waste paper by about two thirds,” summarizes Marcus Friedrich his positive experience. “We’ve always invested in innovations and stateof-the-art machines,” explains Marcus Friedrich. “So we jumped at the chance to be involved in field testing the new operating system.” The company has up to fifteen employees and also provides apprenticeships. End customers are offered virtually the entire spectrum of classic offset printing, supplemented by toner-based digital printing. Other printing companies are also known to avail of Friedrich’s high quality. Gram-

mages range from 80 g/m2 to 135 g/m2 and up to 250 g/m2 picture paper, which delivers a high level of flexibility. Offset printing is used for 80 percent of production, with digital printing used for shorter runs and personalized orders. The Speedmaster XL 75 replaced two printing presses from another manufacturer. Marcus Friedrich has been a loyal customer of Heidelberg ever since and greatly values the partnership-based relationship. In prepress, imaging is handled by a Suprasetter while another Heidelberg machine produces the printing plates. In postpress, a Stahlfolder machine and a Polar cutting unit are used. When it comes to consumables, Friedrich uses Saphira Eco inks. “Never change a running system – we do everything

ME‌Printer May-June 2020

at top speed, and the inks optimally coordinated to the machine are completely compatible with this,” confirms Marcus Friedrich. Together with the reduction in paper waste and the environmentally compatible inks, Friedrich’s production is highly sustainable. With the Speedmaster XL 75 five-color press and the new Speedmaster Operating System, Friedrich now offers its operators a modern, attractive workstation. Intellistart 3, the digital makeready assistant on the Prinect Press Center machine control station, enables a high level of productivity. The 24inch multi-touchscreen shows the operator the extended job queue, which displays all job data from the digital Prinect print shop workflow in a clear format. The job queue makes it possible to prepare for job changes using the automatically generated process view while production is still underway. During the job change, Intelliguide simulates the time-optimized sequence live and, if necessary, also includes the steps to be executed manually. For example, Intellirun shows the mask for preparing the next job in good time before the current run is completed. The operator can see at a glance whether anything is missing and can intervene if necessary in a good time. A lot of time losses can be eliminated or at least minimized through timely preparation.

New Recycling Recommendations Help Climate Efforts

10

In the UK new recommendations allow paperboard packaging to contain up to 15 per cent plastic and still be considered recyclable. One item of such packaging can have 80 per cent less climate impact compared with the corresponding all-plastic packaging. Paperboard packaging with a thin plastic barrier is an ideal compromise which combines paperboard’s stiffness for the construction with plastic’s impermeability for such purposes as a longer food lifespan. This type of packaging reduces the use of plastic and has far less climate impact than the equivalent packaging made only of plastic. However, opinion has been divided over whether and how this type of packaging can be recycled. The answer depends mainly on which technology is available in each local market. This has been the case

in the UK, which has lacked clear advice on how packaging made of such combination materials should be recycled. At the beginning of 2020, the UK labelling organisation OPRL (On-Pack Recycling Label) issued guidelines for how to recycle packaging made of paper and board with a plastic coating. The guidelines were developed in cooperation with the relevant industry organisations and specify which recycling label should be put on the packaging to advise consumers. The new recommendations state that packaging can contain up to 15 per cent plastic and still be classified as recyclable and be sorted in the waste stream for paper materials. As of January 2023 the permitted plastic content will be reduced to 10 per cent of the packaging’s weight. “This is a good decision which es-

tablishes clear rules for a number of years ahead,” comments Ginny Samuel, Business Development Manager at Iggesund Paperboard. “Those of us who work with paper- and paperboard-based packaging have been challenged to develop solutions using less material but we’ve also been given time to do this.” OPRL originally wanted to allow far less than 15 per cent plastic content in fibre-based packaging. But increasing awareness of packaging’s climate impact has already persuaded numerous major brand owners to start replacing their all-plastic solutions. This is particularly the case with food packaging, where plastic is often necessary as a barrier against moisture, grease or aroma. Setting the limit for plastic content too low would have risked slowing down this development.

Esko and AVT Integrate Their Businesses to Extend Packaging Value Chain Connectivity

measurement and communication between parties across the global packaging value chain. By removing the organizational barriers between AVT and Esko, we are expediting this vision.” The aim of the new organization is for customers to communicate and measure print quality and color, from end to end on a global basis, delivering easier, faster, and more accurate right first time production to boost operational performance and ultimately customer satisfaction. Roy Porat, President of AVT, added: “Above all, this integration will absolutely deliver simplicity. It will be easier for printers to measure print quality and color, easier for operators to hit quality

and color targets, easier for teams to track and share quality and color data, and easier for business leaders to buy and implement these solutions. Bringing our combined strengths together to deliver a complete solution is an exciting opportunity for our customers and our business.” Esko and AVT have already released AutoSet, a digital link between Automation Engine, the Esko packaging prepress workflow server, and the AVT 100% print inspection solutions. Enabling Automation Engine to setup AVT inspection systems on conventional and digital presses, as well as on rewinders in an automated way, the development forged the path for the two businesses to work more closely together. AVT was acquired by Danaher, the Esko parent company, in 2017 to support its vision of digitizing the packaging value chain. Mattias Byström expanded his leadership role from Esko President to include oversight of AVT in August 2019. This latest strategic move is the formalization of the strategy to create a combined position to better serve brands and their print and packaging supply chain partners with comprehensive hardware and software solutions.

Esko, a global developer of integrated hardware and software solutions for the print, packaging and label industries, and AVT Inspection Systems Inc. (‘AVT’), global provider of print inspection, process control and quality assurance solutions, are pleased to announce the integration of their businesses. Effective immediately, the integration is designed to deliver simplicity and extended connectivity for both Esko and AVT customers by incorporating automated quality inspection into the connected packaging and labeling value chains. Mattias Byström, Esko + AVTSharing many of the same customers around the world, the combined business will see expansion of its sales and technical service teams with enhanced local representation, ensuring customers and OEM partners receive the same level of customer service and technical excellence they have come to expect from both companies. Mattias Byström, President, Packaging & Color Businesses at Danaher (Pantone, Esko & X-Rite), commented, “We are on a mission to build trust in packaging for the long term. DTM Print Launches the LX600e Colour Label Printer

14

DTM Print, international OEM and solution provider for specialty printing systems, today announced the EMEA sales start of the LX600e Color Label Printer, the newest product of US manufacturer Primera Technology, Inc. LX600e is a compact and lightweight desktop colour label printer with a maximum print width of 127 mm and a print speed of up to 114 mm per second, which is the best-in-class throughput. Compared to other similarly priced colour label printers, LX600e has many advantages: ■ Print Quality: horizontal banding is a common problem with many lower-cost desktop colour label printers. Not so on LX600e. Banding is virtually eliminated even on the fastest print speeds. ■ Interchangeable Dye or Pigment Inks: with a simple swapout of ink cartridges, LX600e can print with dye-based ink for a brilliant, eye-popping colour. Or, choose pigment ink for maximum durability against

water and UV light. Both types of ink work interchangeably on the same printer. Primera’s pigment ink has one of the broadest colour gamuts available on any desktop colour label printer with excellent lightfastness. ■ Single Ink SKU: LX600e utilises an ultra-high capacity single CMY ink tank. Users will only need to replace and keep onhand one ink tank instead of two or four. The inventory of ink is simplified and ink swaps are fast and easy. Process black is dark and crisp. Best of all, process black uses no more ink than a separate black ink tank

would for printing the same amount of text or graphics. ■ Low Maintenance: gone are the days of clogged nozzles, and unwieldy and expensive print head replacements. Users get a brand new print head each time they change the cartridge, simplifying maintenance and dramatically lowering on-going operating costs. ■ Small Footprint: with its dimensions of 345 mm x 242 mm x 432 mm (WxHxD) the LX600e is one of the most compact printers, making it a good fit for applications where space is tight. ■ Ultra-Low Weight: with its just 5 kg including ink cartridge the LX600e is the lightest compact colour label printer in the market. ■ Ultra-Low Energy Consumption: with an active 30 Watts and 3 Watts standby it uses significantly less energy than its competitors. Typical applications include product labels for coffee, wine, water, bakery, confectionery, meat, cheese, and hundreds of other specialty and gourmet foods. The printer is also ideal for manufacturing, laboratory, security, government, retail, convention and meeting badges, and a wide variety of different markets. “DTM Print provides its customers a wide selection DTM certified Genuine Label Stock for inkjet printers: starting with matte and glossy papers extending to transparent, matte and glossy polyester films as well as specialities like metallic gold and silver or pre-coloured substrates. We are delighted to introduce the LX600e to the EMEA market,” said Andreas Hoffmann, Managing Director of DTM Print. “It offers many useful features, including a wider print width, higher print quality and easier to manage consumables than other similarlypriced colour label printers. We believe that it will appeal to a wide range of companies and organisations that require the best-looking labels that they can produce on a desktop colour label printer.”

Caldera Launches New Prepress Automation Solution

16

French RIP software specialist Caldera has announced the launch of a new product for June 2020. Caldera PrimeCenter is a prepress automation solution designed to help wide format digital printers to save time as they prepare jobs for printing. We are enabling the move from a “ready to print” to a “ready to produce” mind-set. Developed in cooperation with Zünd, this Caldera-owned and branded product will be available for delivery from mid-June. This new software solution sits upstream from the RIP, and has been created to fit easily into a Print&Cut workflow, enabling production to be scaled. PrimeCenter not only consolidates preflight, bleeding and nesting into one tool, it also

reduces the level of manual errors, while saving time on file preparation. Different input image files coming in from clients – pdf, tif, jpeg, png – can be automatically prepared and optimized. These files are preflighted, marked and nested together, into “ready for production” layouts that save valuable prepress and production time. PrimeCenter doesn’t replace the RIP as it does not directly drive any printer or cutter, but acts as a firewall, preventing earlier issues at the production stage. The Caldera PrimeCenter bestows multiple benefits for users. There are valuable time savings to be made during the preparation of jobs for Print&Cut production, resulting in increased automation

and operator productivity. The optimized nesting feature will also generate media savings, as well as saving time spent on nesting and layouts. Manual nesting and cut marks are avoided. Production is streamlined thanks to the PrimeCenter’s ability to inject job meta data, and this contributes to complete workflow tracking using XML to connect to MIS and ERP solutions. The target audience for the new product includes all sizes of print shop and the core users will be the prepress operators who prepare files for production. The PrimeCenter’s remit includes unique actions designed to automate roll-up, POS, stickers, backlit, banners production and more.

Sustainability Innovations Drive Growth for Functional and Barrier Coatings

22

Shareholder and consumer demands for more sustainable packaging have businesses responding by increasing measures to provide environmentally friendly alternatives, according to The Future of Functional & Barrier Coatings for Paper & Board to 2024, a new report from Smithers. The market for functional and barrier coatings used in paper and board packaging applications topped 3 million tonnes in 2018; the total market will increase by an additional 1.5 million tonnes to 2024, adding roughly $3.2 billion to the total value at constant 2018 prices, an average CAGR of 7.7%. Brand owners and retailers who are looking to improve their environmentally friendly credentials are driving the use of recycled and recyclable materials in packaging, which is creating pull-through demand in paper and board manufacturing. Recycled fibers accounted for 73% of the total volume of containerboard production in 2011, growing to about 77% in 2018 and expected to make up just under 80% of the total volume in 2023.

Trends in food packaging Food and beverage packaging

accounts for some 80% of demand for coating on paper and board packaging and thus it is useful to understand the anticipated growth in demand for the various types of packaging used in food applications. Flexible plastic packaging materials are expected to show the highest value growth over the period from 2019 to 2024, while metal and other materials such as wood are expected to show below-average growth. Total packaging demand by value is likely to grow by nearly 3% annually across the five-year period. Paper board and flexible paper demand will grow by 3% to 3.5%.

Water vs solvent There is a growing trend to change from solvent-based coatings to water-based, which will reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions and provide safer working environments for workers. Much developmental work is underway to progress commercially viable water-based functional and barrier coatings for paper and board packaging applications in an effort to find alternatives to extruded plastics, especially polyethylene and PET,

paraffin-based wax, silicones and fluorochemicals.

Technology and application trends The industry is taking numerous innovative actions to develop new technologies and efficiencies in the coatings market. Circular polymers, launched by SABIC in January 2019, represent a disruptive innovation in plastics recycling. Plastics are expected to become more acceptable to retailers, brand owners, and consumers. Alternatives to wax-based coatings continue to be the focus of much developmental effort, with products such as hydrogenated tallow diglyceride commercially available and starting to penetrate this market. Antimicrobial coatings that offer enhanced barrier properties are under development. Biomaterials have long been the focus of significant research and will ultimately result in the erosion of the petroleum-based polymer coatings market. Improved coating application technologies, such as curtain and slide coating processes, are creating the opportunity for greater efficiencies and costeffectiveness in coating processes.

Global Functional Additive Sales for Plastic Packaging to Increase to $2.3 Billion Global functional additive sales for plastic packaging are forecast to grow during 2020–25 at an annual average rate of 5.3% to approximately $2.3 billion from $1.7 billion in 2019. Whilst global barrier coating sales for plastic packaging are forecast to grow during 2020–25 at an annual average rate of 4.9% to $2.4 billion to $1.8 billion. With rapidly increasing demand for packaging materials that give even greater protection to their contents, a variety of barrier technologies have been commercialised that preserve, protect and optimise product shelf life, reduce the need for preservatives, provide transparency and gloss, and serve as a printing substrate. Without barrier packaging, perishable goods such as food, beverages and pharmaceuticals would be susceptible to a wide range of deterioration processes. Smithers’ analysis for ‘The Future of Functional Additives & Barrier

Coatings for Plastics Packaging to 2025’ identifies the following key trends and drivers for the industry over the next five years: ■ Economic influences - the outlook for functional additives and barrier coatings demand for plastic packaging will be influenced by global economic growth trends over the forecast period. ■ Demographic & lifestyle influences – recent changes across consumer lifestyles are influencing consumer decisions, from growing urbanisation, growing middle class, greater increase in health and wellness, ‘on-the-go’ consumption and more ■ Convenience - time-pressured consumers want convenience products and packaging such as microwavable ready meals and pre-cut vegetables. ■ Sustainable Packaging - brand owners are responding to consumers’ environmental concerns

in several ways; these include package lightweighting by reducing material usage without impairing pack performance, using recycled plastic and adopting bioplastic packaging. ■ Modern retailing - a shift towards a more centralised structure of grocery retailing has inevitably led to higher levels of packaging, particularly for fresh foods, chilled foods and baked products. ■ Consumer concern on food waste and food safety - there is growing use of active packaging technologies such as ethylene and oxygen scavenging, antimicrobial, antioxidant and antifungal additives. ■ Regulatory developments - the European Union has introduced regulations in relation to food contact, recycling of packaging waste and greater use of recycled plastics in product packaging.

E-commerce Packaging Growing in Tandem with Booming Online Shopping Sales

24

According to The Impact of E-Commerce on Packaging: Longterm Forecasts to 2029, a market report from Smithers, doubledigit growth in e-commerce is creating explosive e-commerce packaging market growth. Now worth $35 billion, e-commerce has averaged just over 20% growth over the last few years driven by market leaders such as Amazon, JD.com and Alibaba. This boom is elevating the role of e-commercespecific packaging. The e-commerce packaging market, which includes corrugated, flexible, and protective and transit packaging, is largely driven by convenience, transparency and price. It’s crucial that packaging is created with e-commerce in mind from the beginning, according to the new Smithers report, since technical, legislative and business environment changes are happening at the same time. In the home, packaging design now plays a more significant role

since unboxing the product is part of the experience. It sets the tone for how the consumer feels about the product and its maker. E-commerce takes packaging to new levels with a fast-developing digital infrastructure and falling prices for the enabling technology. Current imperatives for e-commerce packaging are lightweight designs that save energy, protect the contents, save space and are easily recycled.

The new e-commerce supply chain The future value chain will become more complex, supported by larger volumes and technology, and influenced by the need for more suitable and sustainable packaging. Packaging must survive the e-commerce supply chain with many more points of handling. In particular, the last mile is a packaging solution testing experience that is driving new technology and creative solutions.

Data and product traceability Technology brings new opportunities for communicating with and tracing products. Tracing technology improves the shopping experience for the customer and provides security during shipment. More access to information makes customers more loyal, creating trust within the supply chain. Businesses using these technologies will be better informed and have a competitive advantage.

Sustainability Reusable packaging is a growing part of the sustainable packaging strategy. Today, plastics, particularly single-use, are facing heavy criticism, with other materials likely to be questioned and replaced in the future. Amazon is transitioning to using more flexible plastic. New materials are developed to replace less sustainable options, and we will likely see more use of bioplastics and EPS alternatives in the future.

The Global Wetlaid Non-Wovens Market to Grow at a Slowing Rate Across the Next Five Years Smithers’ latest study ‘The Future of Wetlaid Nonwovens to 2025’ forecasts the global consumption of nonwovens will grow at a rate of 6.0% (tonnes), 6.5% (m2), and 6.4% ($) from 2020-2025. The slightly slower growth rates reflect maturing markets for many wetlaid end uses, including both new and traditional applications. Additionally, the report considers global political and economic issues, including slowing growth in China and parts of Europe, the ongoing ‘trade war’ between the US and China, and sanctions against Russia, Syria, Iran, North Korea. The report reviews the wetlaid nonwovens markets and processes, with the new inclusion of the important hydroentangled process variant. Other variants included are DRC (double recrepe) wetlaid, glass fibre-based wetlaid, all-synthetic fibre wetlaid and standard synthetic/pulp wetlaid. Wetlaid nonwovens continue to suffer through some market

issues, primarily substitution by spunlaid and other nonwovens, in some of the older, established markets but are participating in some of the newest nonwoven applications. Smithers’ analysis for ‘The Future of Wetlaid Nonwovens to 2025’ identifies the following major key drivers for the future growth of the global wetlaid nonwovens industry over the next five years: ■ User requirements play a key part in growth of the industry, with demand for some products that have specific performance requirements being driven by consumers or users. These include: Single-serve tea/ coffee filters, Battery separators, Bio-material filtration. ■ The sustainability movement is global and growing. The one constant is a growing desire among global consumers, companies and governments for more sustainable products. Thinking of wetlaid nonwovens

as an efficient converter of lowcost sustainable, and eventually non-plastic, fibre into highperformance products offers a future need for this process. ■ One of the retail trends in the marketplace in 2020 is the replacement of lower performance and lower cost products with higher performance and lower cost, sustainable products. The cost and sustainability of wetlaid will continue to make it a growing choice in select segments of the rapidly growing wipes market through to 2025. Smithers’ latest report, ‘The Future of Wetlaid Nonwovens to 2025’ covers the global wetlaid nonwovens market, providing a qualitative analysis of the industry and of segments within the market, by process technology, by material type, by end-use application and by geography, and forecasts the growth of the industry over the five years from 2020 to 2025.

Preceded by a preview presentation webinar on May 18, the Print4All Conference 2020 will be held in live streaming starting at 11:00 a.m. on June 24, kicking off an opportunity of discussion on innovation, Industry 4.0 and sustainability. The conference will be an added value for all professionals involved in printing and wanting to explore its potential today more than ever. The headline – “Future Factory – Printing the future, now” – summarises the objective of the appointment, which is also one of the main challenges for the entire sector expressing the need to re-

flect on the new scenarios opened by the fourth industrial revolution, focusing on the opportunities and the risks for the printing world. The profound changes taking place require knowledge of new technologies, but also a greater awareness of skills, innovative approaches and new, highly disruptive business process logics imposed by market evolutions. In this situation, simply being reactive is not enough. Being proactive is an essential prerequisite for companies and entrepreneurs who want to lead the change by developing strategies and practical responses. Exploring the many iterations of Smart Factory, Digital Factory, Think Factory, Open Factory and Green Factory, the Print4All Conference 2020 will tackle two core themes that are fundamental drivers of the prevailing change, namely sustainability and Industry 4.0.

There will be round tables focusing on the experiences of the various players of the supply chain, moderated by the Italian journalist Matteo Bordone. The Print4All Conference is organised by ACIMGA (the Italian Manufacturers Association of Machinery for the Graphic, Converting and Paper Industry), in collaboration with ARGI (Graphic Industry Suppliers Association) and with the support of ITA (Italian Trade Agency) and Fiera Milano. Sino Shows Are Going Online

Reed Exhibitions announced that given the current pandemic situation worldwide, all of its Sino portfolio shows are going to be rescheduled to July 22-24, 2020. In addition, the organizer will launch a wide range of interactive online activities such as Live Matchmaking, Country Events, VR Open House as well as Guided Tours from the fair ground in order to involve all the visitors who are unable to attend the show in person.

Online Matchmaking Given the current situation, all Sino shows have turned its star program TAP online, where visitors who are unable to attend the show can also meet-face-to-face virtually with exhibitors and find potential suppliers. The Targeted Attendee Program (TAP), initiated in 2015, is Reed’s business matchmaking service tailor-made for international visitors to find right partners and solutions based

on their preference and needs. As an indispensable part of the show, the TAP Program has made a great contribution in promoting crossborder partnership and creating high transaction amounts. Reed will arrange online matchmaking meetings for overseas visitors who have clear intentions of procurement but cannot attend the exhibition in person. Through convenient software solutions such as Microsoft Teams, ZOOM, WeChat and WhatsApp, visitors can communicate with on-site exhibitors to achieve their overall purchasing target. The Online TAP Program will be carried out in three forms, i.e., one-on-one meetings, one-tomany meetings and group-togroup meetings. ■ One-on-One Meetings For overseas buyers with clear procurement needs, a live stream studio will be set up for them where one buyer can

directly communicate with one supplier privately. ■ One-to-Many Meetings For overseas buyers who expect to purchase different equipment and consumables, a live stream studio will be set up where one buyer can interact with several exhibitors and take turns to communicate with each of them. ■ Group-to-Group Meetings Live studios for group purchasing of specific products will also be set up where buyer groups can meet with exhibitors groups. If buyers have any purchasing needs during the meeting, Reed will arrange one-on-one communication as further step. Reed’s TAP team consists of 10 TAP executives and 20 Call Center professionals. All of them will strongly contribute to the Online Matchmaking. So far, more than 300 overseas visitors have registered to participate in this year’s Online TAP Program.
