The arrival of online retail and a greater fluency with technology among consumers means that brands are increasingly looking to adopt omni-channel market- ing approaches, integrating real-world and virtual media and data. This trend creates a useful link for sellers of traditional physical media into the online world, but poses new challenges, for example how to integrate QR codes into existing display graphics. Read on to find out how both these trends align with the continued penetration of inkjet printing into signage work, where it can handle the demands of variable data print and short runs.

Kodak Reports Q1 Net Earnings of $7 Million Print Systems Division (PSD), Kodak’s largest division, had Q1 revenues of $213 million, an 8 percent decline compared with Q1 2016 Eastman Kodak Company has reported its financial results for the first quarter 2017, delivering net earnings of $7 million and continued strong growth in its KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates, KODAK FLEXCEL NX Packaging and KODAK PROSPER Inkjet businesses. HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

ME Printer July 2017

GAAP net earnings of $7 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2017, an improvement of $22 million compared with the quarter ended March 31, 2016. Operational EBITDA for the quarter of $8 million compared with $19 million for the first quarter of 2016. Revenues for the quarter of $357 million compared with revenues of $377 million for the first quarter of 2016, down $20 million or 5 percent. On a constant currency basis revenues were down $14 million or 4 percent. The company ended the first quarter with a cash balance of $378 million, a decrease in cash of $56 million for the first quarter of 2017. This reflects the use of cash in working capital items such as seasonal inventory increases for revenues during the remainder of the year.

4

Key product lines achieved strong growth for the quarter: The company also announced that the annuities revenue for KODAK PROSPER Inkjet grew by 26 percent. Volume for KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates grew by 24 percent. Volume for KODAK FLEXCEL NX Plates grew by 22 percent. As previously announced the company made a strategic decision to retain the PROSPER business and has recast financial results to reclassify PROSPER into continuing operations of the company within the Enterprise Inkjet Systems Division. The company announced a revision to its reporting structure, moving the Micro 3D Printing business within the Micro 3D

Printing and Packaging Division (MPPD) into a new division named Advanced Materials and 3D Printing Technology (AM3D), which also includes the operations of the prior Intellectual Property Solutions Division, and creating the standalone Flexographic Packaging Division (FPD), formerly part of MPPD. The company adjusted 2017 guidance to reflect the retention of PROSPER as well as supplier price increases in aluminum impacting Kodak’s largest division. The company now expects revenues of $1.5 billion to $1.6 billion and Operational EBITDA of $105 million to $120 million. Net earnings for 2016 was $16 million. The adjusted 2017 guidance reflects a 40 to 60 percent improvement over 2016 comparable Operational EBITDA of $75 million. “I’m pleased with our continued profitability and by the strong performance of our growth engines — SONORA Plates, FLEXCEL NX Packaging and the PROSPER Inkjet business” said Jeff Clarke, Kodak Chief Executive Officer. “We expect continued strong execution in these growth businesses, which will continue to increase our quality of earnings.” Revenues in the first quarter of 2017 were $357 million, a 5 percent decline from the first quarter of 2016 or 4 percent on a constant currency basis. The decrease was primarily driven by pricing pressures in the pre-press plates business and the expected continued decline in legacy consumer inkjet printer cartridge sales. Partially offsetting these impacts was growth in PROSPER annuities, SONORA

Plates and FLEXCEL NX Plates. GAAP net earnings were $7 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2017, an improvement of $22 million compared with the first quarter 2016. The company delivered first quarter Operational EBITDA of $8 million, consistent with the company’s expectations but down $11 million compared with the first quarter of 2016, or $9 million on a constant currency basis. The company ended the quarter with a cash balance of $378 million, down $56 million from the December 31, 2016, balance of $434 million. “The increased use of cash in the first quarter compared with the prior year is consistent with our expectations” said David Bullwinkle, Kodak Chief Financial Officer. “Our higher use of cash in Q1 2017 primarily reflects an increased seasonal build of inventory, yearover-year reduction in Operational EBITDA and non-recurring items last year. In total for the remaining 9 months of 2017, we expect to generate cash.” Print Systems Division (PSD), Kodak’s largest division, had Q1 revenues of $213 million, an 8 percent decline compared with Q1 2016. Operational EBITDA for the quarter was $13 million, a 28 percent decline compared with the same period a year ago. The decline was due primarily to pricing pressures in digital plates. For the quarter, the KODAK SONORA Plates line delivered strong performance, with volume increasing by 24 percent compared with the same period a year ago. Total year-over-year plate volume

remained stable, due to SONORA Plates growth and the success of new products, including SONORA UV Process Free Plates. Enterprise Inkjet Systems Division (EISD), including the KODAK VERSAMARK and KODAK PROSPER businesses, had Q1 revenues of $37 million, compared with $34 million in the same period in 2016, an increase of 9 percent. Operational EBITDA was negative $1 million, an improvement of $4 million compared with Q1 of 2016. On a constant currency basis, operational EBITDA improved by $5 million. For the first quarter of 2017 the PROSPER business continued to deliver improved performance with year-over-year annuity growth of 26 percent. In April, Kodak also announced it will continue to invest in its next-generation ULTRASTREAM inkjet writing technology, and expects products built with ULTRASTREAM technology to go to market in 2019.

In April, Kodak commenced the $15 million expansion of its Weatherford, Oklahoma manufacturing facility to accommodate the production of KODAK FLEXCEL NX Plates. For the quarter, FLEXCEL NX revenues were $24 million, a 19 percent improvement over the prior-year period and FLEXCEL NX Plate volume continued to deliver strong growth in all regions, increasing by 22 percent year over year. Software and Solutions Division (SSD) delivered Q1 revenues of $21 million, down from $22 million in the same period last year. Operational EBITDA was $1 million, down $1 million compared with the prior-year period. Consumer and Film Division (CFD) revenues for Q1 were $49 million, down 14 percent from $57 million in Q1 of 2016. Operational EBITDA declined from $7 million in the same period last year to negative $3 million, primarily driven

by a $5 million revenue decline in consumer inkjet. Additionally, the prior year included $3 million related to the fulfillment of motion picture film commitments. The newly established Advanced Materials and 3D Printing Technology Division (AM3D) represents Kodak’s research lab and associated new business opportunities including touch sensor films with copper mesh technology and intellectual property licensing not directly related to other business divisions. AM3D had Operational EBITDA of negative $8 million, compared to negative $7 million for Q1 2016. The division continues to expand its efforts in developing new materials for 3D printing and light- blocking materials. In Micro 3D printing, the division continued to progress favorably with several customer technical evaluations of touch sensors for industrial designs. Eastman Business Park Division (EBP) had revenues of $4 million, flat with revenues for the first quarter 2016. Operational EBITDA was flat compared with the same period a year ago. During the quarter, the division signed lease agreements with the Park’s first photonics company tenant and an energy storage company.

ME Printer July 2017

The newly established Flexographic Packaging Division (FPD) includes KODAK FLEXCEL NX Systems and Plates as well as other packaging businesses, which include SR and letterpress plates, proofing products and services. FPD had

strong performance for the quarter, driven by consistent growth in KODAK FLEXCEL NX Plates. Revenues for Q1 were $33 million, an increase of $4 million or 14 percent over the same period a year ago. Operational EBITDA was $6 million, an increase of $2 million compared with the first quarter of 2016.

Women in Print Alliance Sparks a Conversation Industry-wide survey, networking breakfast and panel discussion at SGIA Expo expand opportunities for understanding and connections Opening a dialogue is the first step in fully understanding women’s roles in the printing industry, and it’s a step that the Women in Print Alliance is undertaking, according to Marci Kinter, Vice President, Government and Business Information, Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA). Kinter said, “The printing industry is leaving talent on the table. Roughly half the global workforce is female, but women make up just 26 percent of the industry. The industry is missing out on opportunities to tap into a more diverse bank of experience.” The Women in Print Alliance’s focus is on attracting, retaining and advancing women in the printing workforce. To get a snapshot of

experiences, expectations and priorities, SGIA has launched a survey of women in the printing industry. The Alliance will share the results with the public during its breakfast (October 11, 7:30–9:00 am) at the SGIA Expo. The breakfast will also feature keynote speaker Fawn Germer, author of “Work-Life Reset” which discusses how to reboot work-life balance and live a more meaningful, productive life without regrets. Germer is internationally known for her work on leadership and performance dynamics, and is an expert on change and viability, showing how to convert the stress of a changedriven world into an opportunity to innovate and transform.

Germer will also facilitate Big Picture magazine’s Women in Print Winners panel discussion (October 11, 2:30 pm), recognizing the trailblazing efforts of women in print. The 2017 honorees will discuss the role of women in today’s print industry as well as unique traits and experiences that make this group exemplary. “The Women in Print Alliance is all about starting a conversation that encourages more women to join the print industry. Our field is creative, dynamic and exciting, and there’s a need for skills in all areas, from graphic design to administration and sales. Printing is a great place to grow,” SGIA’s Maggie Stevens, Vice President of Marketing & Communications, added.

HexaSolutions Invests in eCon Synchro Knife Sheeter For providing such around-the-clock services, the company heavily relies on its equipment

ME Printer July 2017

HexaSolutions, a paper and board converter based in Château-Thierry, Champagne province, in the heart of France, refer to themselves as firefighters. Firefighters for their customers: offset printers. No matter if they urgently need a specific paper grammage or a certain sheet size or if they want to use their existing rolls but in a smaller width, HexaSolutions is dedicated to serving their customers, offering customized solutions in superior quality.

10

For providing such around-the-clock services, the company heavily relies on its equipment. Having started their business 5 years ago, HexaSolutions sees a permanent growth especially in their folio sheeting business. With the rising demand for high quality stacks, with grammages ranging from 100 g/ m2 in paper up to 400 g/m2 in board, their existing sheeting equipment no longer meets the high requirements in cut quality. By investing now, in a new eCon synchro knife folio sheeter from BW Paper-

systems’ brand MarquipWardUnited, HexaSolutions will be able to provide their customers with press ready stacks with superior cut and stack quality and the quick delivery they need. “The cut quality and the wide spectrum of production capacities of the eCon sheeter were really the key factors of this investment,” said Christophe Kopp, Managing Director of HexaSolutions. “As a converter, we should provide the best stack quality and the best delivery time for our customers based around Paris, so we were convinced to make the right choice with BW Papersystems equipment.” This new eCon folio sheeter has a 1650 mm working width, is equipped with 4 unwinds and features the industry leading MarquipWardUnited knife technology with a maximum knife load of 1000 g/m² for flexibly converting a wide range of products. This new sheeter ideally supports HexaSolutions' mission to be their customers' firefighters.

But HexaSolutions does not only want to improve its product quality with the addition of a new synchro knife sheeter from BW Papersystems, they also expect to double their production output from 5,000 tons to 10,000 tons per year. Their ambitious goal: HexaSolutions wants to become the Number 1 paper and board converter for Paris, the capital city of France, and its suburbs. “Our eCon sheeter will be the most modern sheeter installed in a paper converting plant in France, and so with this new investment our target is to establish ourselves as a premium folio sheet supplier,” concludes Kopp. HexaSolutions’ decision for an eCon sheeter from BW Papersystems and MarquipWardUnited continues its global success story. Nigerian Authorities Clamp Down on Fake Printing Supplies The raids were in collaboration with HP’s Anti Counterfeiting and Fraud (ACF) programme, which provided key intelligence and helped with identifying the seized items as counterfeit Nigerian Police and state security officers have moved to find and seize counterfeit printing supplies specifically targeted at HP Printers around the country. Authorities, who have found and confiscated about 167,000 fake items since the raids commenced in March 2017, said the raided operations were involved in manufacturing counterfeit print supplies for HP Printers, and providing components illegally bearing the original company’s trademark to other counterfeiting organisations. The raids were in collaboration with HP’s Anti Counterfeiting and Fraud (ACF) programme, which provided key intelligence and helped with identifying the seized items as counterfeit. Olatunji Itiola, country supplies business manager, Nigeria and Ghana,

HP, said that the illicit items seized by officials included ready for sale counterfeit printing cartridges as well as fake components such as security labels and packaging.

been seized by local authorities. HP says it has conducted over 4,500 audits and inspections (CPPAs and CDIs) of partners’ stocks or suspicious deliveries for customers.

According to Itiola, “HP is delighted that this illegal activity has been identified and the defrauding of thousands of innocent Nigerians has been prevented. We are grateful to the Nigerian authorities for their cooperation in this matter. We are proud of the continued success of the anticounterfeiting and fraud programme, and we would continue to work hard to protect customers from potentially dangerous fake printing products.”

Stakeholders in the industry say the seizure of illicit items is a step right direction as the country needs to rid of fraudulent activities. Speaking on quackery in Nigeria’s Information Technology (IT) industry, Vincent Asor, chairman, Council of Computer Professionals of Nigeria (CPN), told BusinessDay, “The IT industry is not properly regulated and this has created an avenue for quackery in the industry.”

Presstek Digital Offset Presses Are a Hit at Expografica 2017

ME Printer July 2017

Latin American channel partner wins new customers as opportunities abound for short- to medium-length print runs using Presstek’s DI Presses

20

Presstek LLC, the leading provider of eco-friendly printing solutions, today announces the success from the recent Expografica, which took place in Guadalajara, Mexico in May, 2017. Booth traffic was notably high as companies visited Presstek’s Latin American partner Enfoque Digital to see live demonstrations of the Presstek 34DI, a compact, efficient 4-color digital offset press. The Enfoque team attributes the surge of interest in Presstek DI waterless presses to the growing demand in the region for printing equipment that is more cost-effective than digital printers and that use less resources than conventional offset presses. In the Enfoque booth, CardSystems de México purchased the Presstek 34DI right off the show floor. CardSystems plans to use the

press for producing credit cards, business cards, postcards and more. CardSystems was immediately impressed with the Presstek 34DI’s outstanding print quality and waterless design, which dramatically reduces set-up time “It’s an excellent time to be in the Latin American market with Presstek’s digital offset presses,” comments Emilio Lazcano, General Manager Enfoque Digital. “Presstek equipment serves a niche market segment. It gives our customers more than what digital printers are capable of, while delivering the quality and output of a conventional offset press, but without the costs." At the show, Enfoque Digital set up a mock print shop in their stand featuring the Presstek 34DI and Momentum RIP. Thousands of sheets were printed daily as

attendees brought to the booth their files to see the printed live. For short- to medium-length print runs, the Presstek 34DI is proving to be an attractive solution for inplant facilities and printers in Latin America because of its low cost of ownership for 4-color printing. “By far, Expografica was one of the busiest shows I’ve seen in quite some time. Attendees were very impressed with the capabilities and high-quality results from the Presstek 34DI. I enjoyed learning about their pressroom operations and talking with them about how the Presstek DI technology fits right into their business model,” comments Jay Hughes, Sales Manager, Presstek LLC. “The future looks very bright for the Latin American market and for our partnership with Enfoque Digital.”

Successful Launch of the new Diana Easy Folder Gluer The Diana Easy is a new machine but with a heritage that stretches back almost 60 years through many proven Diana models capacity was greatly increased by Heidelberg following its acquisition of the site in 2003. Operating under the MK Masterwork banner since 2016 with 130 employees, the factory is currently undergoing further significant development by the Chinese partner to double production capacity to handle the demand for the new Diana Easy, for the existing Diana Smart and Diana X machines as well as new products planned for introduction over the coming months.

ME Printer July 2017

In May this year Heidelberg and MK Masterwork launched the new folder gluer model, the Diana Easy, simultaneously at China Print in Beijing and at a dedicated packaging event in Wiesloch, Germany. On June 1st, more than 40 customers were able to visit the MK Masterwork factory at an open house event held in Nové Mesto, Slovakia and see where and how the new machine is manufactured.

22

The Diana Easy is the latest model to be produced in the Nové Mesto factory which has a history of manufacturing modules as well as entire Diana folder gluers for the Postpress Packaging market segment going back more than 30 years. Located in Slovakia approximately 120 km east of Vienna, the site is in a very attractive region for machine manufacturers, where more and more companies are investing in new factories. The site is ideally located to supply

customers not only in central Europe but also throughout the world, thanks to Heidelberg’s extensive distribution network. The Nové Mesto site has been continuously developed throughout its history. Originally established by the packaging company Jagenberg, the plant’s

MK Masterwork will install a new portal milling machine at the site in the fall and a new ERP system went live at the beginning of the year, both part of an ongoing MK Masterwork program to shorten manufacturing times and increase production capacity. Designed by the MK Masterwork team in Neuss, Germany and built in Nové Mesto, the Diana Easy is a new machine but with a heritage that stretches back almost 60 years through many proven Diana models. The

Diana Easy features functions from the top-of-the-range Diana X as well as generous throughput up to 350 m/min. One of the key design criteria for the Diana Easy was to develop a truly modular machine that will allow customers to extend the capacity of the folder gluer as the needs of their business change. Adding features such as the ability to produce 4/6 corner boxes or an inline ejection functionality can be retrofitted to the machine at a later stage. The Diana Easy also comes at a very attractive price for packaging and commercial printers as well as postpress specialists looking to replace older less productive machines or develop new products or markets. It has only been two and a half years since Heidelberg and MK Masterwork signed a partnership

agreement to work together to develop and distribute postpress machines for packaging customers, and yet the results achieved have already been outstanding for both companies. Digital Print for Packaging Market to Grow to $23.2 Billion by 2022 Penetration for digital print technology is not uniform the labels sector is the early adopter and mature in some regions

ME Printer July 2017

Digital print for packaging is worth $13.2 billion in 2017, and will climb to $23.2 billion in 2022, according to the latest exclusive research from Smithers Pira. As such it represents a key growth area for the print industry, as well as opening new market opportunities for packaging converters and their brand customers. Smithers Pira’s new report – The Future of Digital Print for Packaging to 2022 – tracks how demand for inkjet and electrophotography print in packaging will evolve across 2017-2022. This will see an 11.2% annual increase in value across the forecast period and annual 15.4 growth in volume output (A4 sheets equivalent) – up from 163 billion A4 sheets (equivalent) in 2017 to 334 billion in 2022. This reflects the arrival of new higher throughput equipment. Penetration for digital print technology is not uniform the labels sector is the early adopter and mature in some regions. Consequently, future expansion will rest heavily on less-developed packaging formats principally.

24

Corrugated board Folding cartons Flexible plastics “Growth is forecast in different applications and regions at varying rates. In packaging, it will be rising sharply as more players get involved, make investments and see how these benefit their customers. There will be new campaigns, which will be copied. Converters will also provide new services in response to their customers, which will allow significant supply chain efficiencies – some of which are not clear in early 2017, but will open up over the next few years to better suit the final packaging consumers. The goal for all parties is to satisfy buyers,” said Dr Sean Smyth, the report’s author. In 2017, the mainstream corrugated sector has a real appetite for high-volume inkjet liner and post-print systems, to provide new functions and gain plant efficiencies. Implementation is being led by some of the largest

companies in the corrugated sector – as well as by more agile independents – leading to the arrival of new dedicated equipment that will enable volume production at a much more economical price. Digital printing will enable packaging supply chains to develop, providing advantages in cost, time and flexibility for buyers and final consumers. In 2017, the great majority of packaging and labels is produced by specialist converters, delivering to fillers and packers. These fill the packs and apply labels, adding any coding, and complete packs are then delivered into the retail distribution chain. Fundamentally, using digital printing in packaging enables brands and retailers to make decisions later that are closer to the end consumer. The result is making packaging and labels more relevant to the end consumer who ultimately determine the success or failure of brands and retailers.

Retail and Inkjet to Drive Innovation in $42 Billion Printed Signage Market

ME Printer July 2017

The total volume of media printed for indoor and outdoor signage applications will grow slightly more across the same period

26

Innovative technologies will become increasingly important as the world printed signage market evolves across the next five years, according to the latest exclusive research from Smithers Pira. Its new report – The Future of Printed Signage in an Electronic World to 2022 – analyses the key drivers shaping this segment. This shows that the global market for printed signage is worth $42.00 billion in 2017, and overall market value will increase only marginally, 0.1% CAGR for the five-year forecast period, to reach $42.13 billion in 2022 at constant prices. The total volume of media printed for indoor and outdoor signage applications will grow slightly more across the same period, to 11.17 billion metres square in 2022, up from 10.80 billion metres square in 2017: a 0.7% CAGR. Smithers Pira finds that: within the retail environment there are several trends that will directly impact the demand for printed signage in the future. Increased competition in supermarkets and other retail environments to drive sales around short-term promotions – such as Halloween and Valentine’s day – is creating a corresponding demand for signage and point-of-sale (PoS)

media to engage the consumer and generate seasonally inspired or impulse purchases. The arrival of online retail and a greater fluency with technology among consumers means that brands are increasingly looking to adopt omni-channel marketing approaches, integrating real-world and virtual media and data. This trend creates a useful link for sellers of traditional physical media into the online world, but poses new challenges, for example how to integrate QR codes into existing display graphics. Both these trends aligns with the continued penetration of inkjet printing into signage work, where it can handle the demands of variable data print and short runs at

quick turnaround. Inkjet remains the focus of the majority of future innovation for signage printing, further marginalising litho and screen presses into low-paying applications. Wide-format inkjet printers have now settled on a fairly standard format. Evolutionary improvements in sizes, speeds, capabilities, price points, and media handling can be expected for 2017–2022 – for example, the capacity to print side-by-side simultaneously on wider-format machines, rather than on base printers. The global signage market remains in a state of transition between traditional analogue 2017–2022 print processes and digital inkjet processes. The latter have seen around a decade of strong growth at the expense of the former, and are the focus of the majority of R&D budgets. It is not a foregone conclusion that digital will replace all analogue processes over time in all applications. This is because processes such as lithography and screen will continue to offer long-run economies of scale, and inkjet systems are only forecast to see incremental advances in this direction and the overall print process proposition for 2017-2022 is heavily dependent on the format of signage/ PoS media demanded.

What are some of the highlights of your

participation at FESPA? Tell us about Canon's UVgel waterless ink technology. What benefits does it bring to the table?

In the Middle East, Canon mission is to become a true value-added sales and service company as we continue to focus on our “closer to customers” business strategy and to work closely with our partners. This year, Canon showcased its market-leading range of print solutions inspiring graphics producers with an array of opportunities to boost their productivity, expand their applications portfolio and access profitable new revenue streams. Starting from an understanding of each PSP’s (Print Service Provider) individual business aspirations, Canon explored areas where they could consider new ways of working, showing them how fresh thinking around applications, supported by innovative technology and new approaches to add value to their customers. An important highlight at this year’s FESPA was the launch of the new 64-inch roll-to-roll Océ Colorado 1640 printer, built on Canon’s ground-breaking UVgel technology. Designed to eliminate the compromises inherent in prevailing roll-to-roll technologies, the Océ Colorado 1640 reinforces Canon’s long heritage of continuous innovation in digital wide-format printing. Canon’s UV gel is an exciting technology for the world. It provides an entirely new way for print businesses to produce cost-effective, high-quality printing with non-toxic, durable, and colour-fast results on virtually any flexible media. With UV gel, the ink instantly gels when it comes into contact with the media it is printed on. The result is a precise dot

placement, and area control for consistent high-quality images at high speed. Therefore, pictures can be printed repeatedly at maximum efficiency and quality. Additionally, the ink leaves almost no discernible physical profile thanks to ultra-thin ink dispersion. Compared to eco-solvent or latex printing this helps to save almost half of the ink of conventional printing technologies. FESPA 2017 also coincided with the tenth anniversary of the launch of the Océ Arizona series. Print service providers (PSPs) and corporate companies operating in vertical markets such as décor and packaging, found a broad spectrum of printed applications from the Océ Colorado 1640, Océ Arizona, Océ ColorWave and imagePROGRAF printers.

What sort of market is currently present for wide format printing in the MEA region?

What sort of response have your products garnered at FESPA?

During FESPA 2017, the Océ Colorado 1640 won a prestigious technology award from the European Digital Press association (EDP) in the ‘Roll-to-roll Printers up to 170cm’ category with the judging Technical Committee calling it a ‘game-changer’. While celebrating the 6000th Océ Arizona installa-

tion at Technipub in France, Canon Europe also achieved significant sales of the Océ Arizona series flatbed printers during FESPA, both from existing customers looking to scale up their production capabilities and from first-time investors in Canon flatbed solutions.

What sort of post-event activities will Canon engage in post FESPA?

The changes in the print industry mean that customers are now looking for relationships that are more than transactional. B2B success is not about printing more, it is about consultative partners that can offer creative solutions to business challenges. Our “closer to customers” strategy has been one of the pillars of our growth in this region as it has allowed us to better understand the sentiments of our customers, subsequently enabling us to better serve them. In a move to drive operational efficiencies in the workplace, we have also been strengthening our B2B offering with new ‘Market Propositions’ in which we are executing bespoke solutions for customers in key sectors. We have already launched this new proposition in the form of Canon for Business events in markets such as UAE, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, offering solutions and services to key verticals such as healthcare, government and education. We will continue this drive with more countries including Iran, Jordan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia in the 2H of 2017.

ME Printer July 2017

The region's printing sector will collectively expand at an annual rate of 8.7 per cent to over $40 billion in market value in 2022 from $26.8 billion in 2017 - new report published by Smithers Pira shows. Wide format inkjet is expected to be one of the key growth areas in the regional market. While ecommerce is growing, physical stores are looking at new ways to be innovative and interactive as they constantly need to update their environment to keep consumers’ attention and custom. This need to re-think the strategy of the traditional store experience

has opened up large opportunities for print within retail. High quality, high value printed interior decoration has become an easy way to refresh and create a new look and experience for a customer visiting a store. Similarly, more companies are using pop-up shops as a successful way to generate interest and eventually sales. These temporary shops are able to implement ontrend and exciting printed designs and interiors that aren’t always a possibility within retail stores. An important trend and vertical that is seeing a great update in the MEA region is the interior décor industry. From business and industrial environments to the new wave in home entertainment, the growth in markets that are now exploring decorative applications will see the industrial print sector reach more than $107 billion by 2020. Digital printing is meeting this demand for tailor-made services perfectly, with solutions that not only provide a platform for customisation, but at a relatively low cost and – crucially – with a fast turnaround.

EFI’s LED Inkjet Customers Benefit From Reduced Waste ME Printer speaks to Ken Hanulec, the Vice President of Marketing at EFI Inkjet, about sustainability in the printing industry

ME Printer July 2017

Many companies are pushing for sustainability in the printing industry. How do you as a company that provides printing products and solutions make sure you contribute to the cause?

30

Like many vendors in the signage and graphics space, we recognized our customers’ needs for an alternative to solvent systems, because of the levels of VOCs they can emit. The subsequent demand for UV systems as a replacement led us to becoming the world’s largest manufacturer of digital UV-curable inks. We took it a step further, as we saw opportunities to address other aspects of the sustainability issue, by developing the first productionspeed LED UV-curing inkjet systems. Our LED printers use much less heat than what is required for traditional UV curing or for drying latex prints. That translates into reduced use of energy resources and, as a result, lower electricity bills for our customers.

Economic concerns, technological threat and uncertain futures have contributed to a crisis of confidence in print. Do you agree to this statement? If yes, what more needs to be done?

There are markets for prints that are challenged and are not likely to return to what they once were, but there is tremendous opportunity when you really examine and redefine what is considered “print.” Many markets in signage and graphics printing have been resistant to commoditisation, and it is a sector that has grown from traditional outdoor billboard signage to fleet and vehicle wraps, building wraps, innovative, high-end POP displays on unique substrates, and more. As more people experience the positive impact those graphics have in a marketing sense, that sector of print will continue to grow and drive profitability for customers.

And then, beyond that, there is an industrial side of print where digital print at least will drive tremendous change, in markets like wood and flooring products, apparel and décor, ceramic tiles, brick, concrete and more. These are markets that were not defined as “print” a generation ago, but digital technologies are bringing these types of industrial applications more into the graphic arts space, which speaks volumes about the potential strong future for print manufacturing.

What sort of factors are shaping today’s print industry?

From a sustainability standpoint, there is not only a need to develop safer, greener technologies, but there also is a significant need to reduce waste. EFI’s LED inkjet customers benefit from reduced waste because LED lamps produce a more-consistent exposure over the life of the lamp. As a result, there are fewer wasted prints related to bulb degradation and trial-and-error lamp power adjustments. Beyond that, the trend toward “lean” and greater efficiency in operations points to the many production workflow advantages EFI has developed for our Fiery digital front end systems and our MIS/ERP and web-to-print workflow software. Using these systems to eliminate mistakes in the production process saves our customers money and improves their efficiency. For many, and perhaps most, of our workflow software customers, the higher levels of efficiency allow them to produce much more work without adding staff.

What are the challenges that block the pathway

towards sustainability in the printing industry?

I think the industry is on a positive path, and there has been substantial progress both in recycled media compatibility with digital printing systems and in recyclability of digitally printed materials. Recycling is certainly a consideration in R&D for our new technologies. For example, printed output from our new ultra-high-speed single-pass LED inkjet press for corrugated board printing, the EFI Nozomi C18000, is certified for recyclability.

New media options, digital technology implementations and green expectations can breed market uncertainty. In such a scenario, how can printers make sure their new investments can bring in maximum ROI?

Even the most environmentally sustainable systems cannot help printing companies if those systems cannot deliver a good ROI. While our LED printers have been important as a way for our customers to increase the sustainability of their print operations, we recognise it is not a one-size-fits-all approach. The

amount of printing capability has to be in line with the amount of business a customer has. That's why EFI has a range of LED production inkjet graphics printing technologies, from entry-level products like the new EFI Pro 16h hybrid roll/flatbed printer to higher-volume, highspeed models like the VUTEk LX3 Pro printer hybrid printer. That way customers can achieve the sustainability advantages LED offers with a level of device that delivers the best ROI.

How according to you can printers reshape their businesses by aligning commercial and environmental goals?

Many EFI customers look for new opportunities where they can develop markets for many of the premium-margin applications possible with LED inkjet printers. In some cases, this effort really matches what some printing companies and customers are also seeking in terms of greener processes. A customer in Dubai, for example, NDIGITEC, adopted VUTEk LED print technology knowing there is increased awareness and demand among Gulf Region businesses for sustainable technologies.

Large Format Printer Market Worth $8.42 Billion by 2022 Growing demand for advertising, dĂŠcor, and textile printing applications is expected to drive the market

ME Printer July 2017

According to a new market research report "Large Format Printer Market by Ink Type (Aqueous, Solvent, UVCurable, Latex, Dye Sublimation), Printing Technology (Inkjet, Laser), Print Width, Application and Geography - Global Trends & Forecast to 2022", the large format printer market is expected to be worth $8.42 Billion (in terms of value). This includes both hardware and after- sales services, and is expected to witness a shipment of 398.3 thousand units (in terms of volume) by 2022. This is at a CAGR of 3.0 percent and 4.4 percent, respectively, between 2016 and 2022. Growing demand for advertising, dĂŠcor, and textile printing applications is expected to drive the market. Signage is expected to lead the large format printer market in terms of volume. Signage refers to the use of signs and symbols to communicate messages in an attractive way to a specific group. It is one of the most widely used methods of marketing. Signage has many applications

32

such as in indoor signs, shop branding, indicators, large corporate emblems, promotional signage, and window displays. Signage acts as an influencer at the point of sale; as an attraction point in booth decoration among others. Although there has been a considerable penetration of digital signage, the overall large format printer market is still expected to show a steady growth in the retail graphics industry, particularly in the indoor PoS signage. A major factor is growth of organized retail in emerging economies such as India, which is leading to construction of large-scale retail outlets such as hypermarkets and supermarkets where PoS and PoP signs are used extensively. UV-cured ink consists of acrylic monomers with a photo initiator. As soon as the printing is done, the ink is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, which causes a chemical reaction, thus, making the ink solid. Unlike solvent and aqueous inks, the UV-cured ink does not evaporate. It

gets set and dries up quickly on the exposure of UV light and can be sent to the next step of the production process. This makes them durable and suitable for printing on a wide range of flexible materials along with direct to rigid substrates. Due to these advantages of UV-cured ink, the large format printers for UVcured ink have been adopted at the fastest rate by the end users. The market in APAC (Asia-Pacific), which includes emerging economies of India and China as well as developed countries such as Japan and South Korea, is expected to grow at the highest CAGR between 2016 and 2022 because of the rapid growth of retail graphics, signage and advertising in the region due to fast-growing economies in countries such as India. The key players in the market are HP Inc. (U.S.), Canon (Japan), Epson (Japan), Roland Dg Corp. (Japan), Xerox Corp. (U.S.), Mimaki (Japan), Ricohl (Japan), Konica Minolta. (Japan), and Agfa Gevaert (Belgium), EFI Inc. (U.S.), and Durst (Italy).

Resilience is one of the characteristics that has defined the UAE’s economic success since its founding in the early 1970s. Early on it embraced economic diversification as a surer path to building sustainable growth, in particular against the vagaries of oil dependence. It’s a formula that has worked well. The decline in the share of oil and gas in its GDP went from 41 percent in 2000 to 31 percent in 2015, and over the same period, there has been 400 percent increase in industrial infrastructure spending. For companies like Rashid Printing, this ethic of resilience is one reason the Emirates continues to be a rising star among emerging markets. Established in 1985, Rashid Printing has built a dynamic business that has thrived for three decades by adapting to new market conditions and creating a flexible service model that caters to its customer’s diverse needs. Zoeb Boxwala, the Director of Rashid Printers, commented, “We do all kinds of commercial work, including books, point of sale materials and we collaborate closely with the advertising industry to support a range of marketing campaigns. But, we are also very proud of the niche we have created for handling challenging projects for our clients. We like to say to our customers that whatever you can conceive, we can accomplish.” Over the past several years, one of the biggest challenges facing Rashid and its clients has been the growth in demand for short-run printing jobs. “We do a lot of printing for high-end customers, but over the years we’ve seen the runs getting shorter and shorter,” said Boxwala. “With our existing offset equipment, we recognized that the cost viability from a production point of view was
