Building a vibrant community for publishing, printing, and packaging Dubai Production City, formerly IMPZ, is offering a world-class infrastructure combined with retail and residential lifestyle offerings to support the growth of media production

ME‌Printer July 2016

Saeed Al Falasi Executive director

Dubai Production City (DPC), formerly International Media Production Zone, is a leading business hub enabling the global and local publishing, printing and packaging industries to excel. Home to over more than 269 leading printing and packaging companies, DPC is a holistic community offering business, retail and residential lifestyle. Saeed Al Falasi, executive director, Dubai Production City, is responsible for managing its operations and leading innovative initiatives that strive to promote the business park as an emerging, customer-centric brand. Saeed also spearheads programmes that seek to establish DPC as a community for the graphics arts and 3P industries – printing, publishing and packaging – by fostering the growth of media production from across the global industry value chain. Saeed points out that DPC benefits from free zone privileges and regulations that facilitate the ease of business and operations, a unique and vibrant community supporting and fostering the growth of media production. This is in addition to the availability of highly skilled workforce and world class infrastructure. All these various attractions enable companies to run a successful busi-

ness and have access to efficiently operate in the MENA region. “DPC is undoubtedly the most attractive place for printing and publishing companies in the UAE to set up their businesses because we offer the best infrastructure to support mass production printing. For global printing and communications industries, DPC is the ideal gateway to expand their operations to the Middle East region. As a free zone dedicated to printing, publishing, and packaging, our priority is to make it easy not only for business setup and licensing, but also to help them tackle the challenges of logistics, warehousing, and accessibility,

and also provide other world-class facilities that business owners and employees would expect,” says Saeed. DPC, which is part of the Tecom Group’s 11 business communities, is the latest to include Dubai in its brand name. All the brands and communities under Tecom Group symbolise a sharper focus on promoting innovation as the driving force behind the growth of the media industry. “Rebranding DPC helped us achieve consistency with Tecom Group’s other brands – media communities such as Dubai Media City (DMC), Dubai Studio City (DSC), Dubai Internet City (DIC), and Dubai Outsource City (DOC). Dubai is a globally recognized brand name, and maintains its position as an international hub of opportunities in the Middle East and Africa. This rebranding symbolizes a sharper focus on promoting innovation as the driving force behind the growth of the media industry. Our reputation as a community supporting the creation and delivery of high quality content for all parts of the media industry has gathered strength and we are now ready to build on this platform through the next phase of our development. As has been said by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al

Publishing Pavilion

Maktoum, UAE vice president, prime minister and ruler of Dubai, the UAE has the capacity to become one of the most innovative countries in the world, and Dubai’s media industry will play a fundamental part in the delivery of that vision,” says Saeed. Majed Al Suwaidi, managing director of Dubai Media City, Dubai Studio City, and Dubai Production City, indicates that entrepreneurs and local talent are the future of the media industry and that Dubai’s media industry will play a fundamental role

in making the UAE among the most innovative countries in the world. “We will always welcome international businesses and fully recognise the contribution they make to the building of vibrant communities. However, our focus will be on nurturing local talent and entrepreneurs, who are the future of the media industry. Our new platform for media start-ups and entrepreneurs, in5 Media, is an integral part of our incubation platform which aims at enabling the broader

entrepreneurial ecosystem in Dubai and the region as a whole. As a platform, in5 plays a fundamental role in achieving our community’s innovative potential by allowing a fluid interaction between startups and entrepreneurs working across different sectors. The in5 model reflects the ever-increasing interconnectedness of sectors and strives to encourage founders and entrepreneurs to innovate at the boundaries and intersections of various industries,” says Majed.

Xerox Success Story

Al Mawakeb Schools’ in-house Document Center powered with the latest Xerox® Production Technology

ME‌Printer July 2016

AMSI document Center, Al Mawakeb School

Technology is transforming the way we live and the education sector is not far behind to adopt the latest technologies. Today, digital on – demand printing has become a vital part of the Education sector where institutions are investing in the latest technology to quickly & easily produce education materials & varied content while maintaining the highest quality & controls. Academia Management Solutions International (AMSI) is a Dubai based, private education solutions & consultancy provider with over 35 years of experience across all aspects of school project development & management. Academia Management Solutions International (AMSI) is a collaboration of academicians & educators who bring together a wealth of experience & international expertise with a passion for the education industry & what they do. Today, AMSI manages a number of schools regionally including the successful models of Al Mawakeb Schools & the International School of Arts & Sciences (ISAS) in UAE. Al Mawakeb School – Al Garhoud, Dubai was established in 1979 delivering a tri-lingual teaching program & internationally recognized for its

advanced e-learning curriculum. In 1997, Al Mawakeb School inaugurated it’s second school with the state–of–the art facilities in Al Barsha, Dubai & has developed a leading reputation for its University placement programs. AMSI is dedicated to raising the standard of education in its community & provide high quality education to over 200,000 students regionally. AMSI recognized early the importance of innovation and technological advancements for effective education delivery. AMSI has always strategically partnered with organizations who share their passion & leadership & with this in mind, the management invested in Xerox Technology for a cost effective in-house digital print environment. Its schools’ printing requirements included complex applications such as course packs, textbooks, examination papers, training manuals, newsletters, reports, circulars, parent information booklets, brochures etc. AMSI & Xerox Emirates worked closely together to upgrade the entire production printing setup to develop a full-fledged in–house production class document center for the schools run & managed by them.

“AMSI & Xerox Emirates share a long standing business relationship of over 15 years. Having worked closely with the school’s management & the operations team, we understand their objectives of imparting a high quality education to their students & also recognized their need for an efficient & effective printing environment to achieve their bigger goals. The Xerox team assessed the critical requirements of the school & put together a solution that will take care of their current & future needs. The bottom line was to deliver the right fit solution that would eliminate all their printing concerns and allow AMSI & the school to focus on their core tasks”, says Andrew Horne, General Manager of Xerox Emirates. “When we decided to upgrade the school’s printing center infrastructure we had no doubts about Xerox’s capability to present the best in class solution that would meet our requirements. In addition to providing the digital printing presses & the associated software solution, Xerox Emirates also provided a 360 degree printing consultancy followed by an extensive operator & user training that enabled us to eliminate wastage, save costs, reduce downtime and increase our overall productivity”, says Mr. George Akhras, CIO, AMSI. As per Mr. Akhras, “The entire print room has been upgraded with the latest digital production presses from Xerox. The school has invested in the Xerox flagship iGen® 150 press,Xerox® Color Press 1000i with the 5th Colour Option for the Production Colour printing requirements, the Xerox® Nuvera®144 and the D110 production mono devices for the B&W

printing requirements.” It is not just about digital presses. He further added, “The Xerox Emirates Production specialists also helped evaluate, recommend & supply the right post-press finishing solutions required for the AMSI Document Center. The digital production printing engines are complemented with an array of finishing devices for stapling, punching, laminating, spiral binding and booklet making as well as PUR binding equipment. The complete end to end solution from pre-press to digital printing to finishing has resulted in the enhancement of the overall functionalities & colour management capabilities of the center which has resulted in a significant increase in the productivity and overall quality of the printed materials.” The new solution has enabled AMSI to use the document center for a variety of new applications as well. It now caters for the printing & publishing of the schools’ entire customized education content, personalized and customized examination paper sets for complete confidentiality & security, schools’ guides & new student packs, student yearbooks, and other school printing collaterals such as writing pads, conference brochures etc. The ability to print in-house has also resulted in a large percentage of content being now developed & created in house. Due to the detailed assessment & understanding of the needs of the schools by the Xerox Emirates team, the new setup now has redundancy built-in to take care of peak production times; it also has eliminated manual and repetitive steps in the prepress process resulting in reduced errors & reduction in the turnaround times resulting in reduced costs and increased efficiency. The Xerox® iGen® 150 press with the automated Color Maintenance Tool and the Inline Spectrophotometer takes the manual intervention out of the calibration process and delivers outstanding color the first time.

This automated process eliminates unnecessary maintenance procedures resulting in increased uptime. By investing in the Xerox® Color Press 1000i, AMSI Document Center is now able to achieve high quality finishing with automated stapling, folding and creasing features that are very cost – effective, save on manual labor significantly and is used print on demand. Xerox® Color Press 1000 printing at 100 pages per minute for up to 350 gsm media, includes many exciting innovations such as belt fusing and a seamless transfer belt to provide advanced image quality, expanded gamut and productivity, as well as stability and reliability, which are key to short run on demand printing as well as added value applications such as personalized variable data printing. Xerox® Nuvera®144 is powered by the Xerox® Integrated PLUS Finishing Solution for Booklets and is enabled with the Xerox® exclusive, C.P. Bourg Dual-Mode Sheet Feeder that allows selected finishing devices to be set up automatically, through JDF instructions, whether or not they are attached to a specific printer. Productivity is essential to achieving a great return on equipment investments and this machine meets all the right requirements and guarantees substantial ROI. While workflow automation and finishing are taken care of, AMSI Document Center is also substan-

tially benefiting from the Xerox® D110 Printer which is especially adept in transactional workflows. It allows them to print books, booklets, manuals, presentations, brochures and other high-value applications with color covers, tabs and more. Its choice of high speeds and expansive media capacity ensure that it can handle the large volumes required for applications such as books. AMSI also has a strong sustainable approach to their operations and kept this point in consideration during the upgrade process. Going Green is one of the key values in AMSI’s DNA and their sustainability practices include usage of certified paper, printing only on demand which eliminates wastage, run multiple activities that help raise sustainability awareness with staff, students and the community. Overall, for AMSI and its Schools, this technology upgrade with Industry Best Post Sales Service Support in the UAE by Xerox Emirates has ensured a significant increase in productivity, quality, redundancy resulting in better cost economics and operational efficiencies. This has given them the ability to offer a better quality education in the UAE & the region. Durst Case Study

Digital and Durst make the doors open for The Label Makers

8

The Label Makers became one of the first companies in the UK to see the benefits of UV inkjet technology when it invested in the UK’s first Durst Tau 330 in 2013. Doors have been opening ever since, and the company has been so successful in developing new business with the technology that it also become the first company in Europe to invest in a second such machine late in 2015. Based in the West Yorkshire city of Bradford in the UK, The Label Makers has been designing and manufacturing premium self-adhesive labels since 1963. The £7 million turnover, 66-employee firm supplies some of the UK’s leading brands, covering market sectors such as food, beverages, personal care, petro chemical and decorative coatings. Technologically, it has a reputation as a pioneer, adding digital printing to its existing UV flexo, UV litho and UV silk screen capabilities, and being prepared to invest in inkjet when few others in its market were. It always wants to keep ahead of the curve with its production capability. Digital print now represents 30% of its business (the company also runs a Xeikon toner-based press) and is growing quickly, taking work off of the flexo presses that can be more economically printed on the Durst Tau 330s.

Managing director David Webster explained why The Label Makers invested in a second Durst. “We have found the technology to be fantastic in the lift and vibrancy that the inks have given to our customers' labels, especially in the health and beauty markets where customers require the silk screen look. The lightfast ink capabilities are also very attractive to the industrial and horticultural market sector.” So successful has the first Durst Tau 330 been that the company’s customers are even demanding that jobs are printed on it. In going back to the market for a second machine, it was not a definite choice to go with Durst again, and The Label Makers carried out rigorous tests printing the same label using three different digital technologies. “It was quite considerably better on the Durst,” said Mr Webster. “The touch and feel was something else, something almost unique.” The new Durst Tau 330 features improved web tension control and a chill drum for printing flexible film and difficult heat-sensitive materials. Like the first Tau 330, it also has a strong white ink for printing onto clear materials. Its seven colours are able to hit 94% of all Pantone colours, while the inks produce good lightfastness for outdoor use. Variable data capability has also been added. The Label Makers shook hands with Durst on the new press purchase at Labelexpo 2015, where it invested some £2 million altogether in digital printing and finishing equipment. Installation of the second Durst Tau 330 was completed in December 2015 and within three days of being unloaded at the Bradford site, the press was in full operation. Although David Webster admits that The Label Makers has been through a “massive learning curve” with the Durst technology, the running has been good, as has been the support from Durst UK, which took on responsibility for the labels and specialty packaging segments early in 2016. “I’ve been extremely impressed by the Durst technology and by the support I get. That’s why I’ve now got two of the Tau 330 presses,” said Mr Webster.

World’s best newspaper printers 2016–18 64 publishing and printing companies in 26 countries have secured two-year membership into WAN-IFRA's INCQC club

WAN-IFRA cuboid

The new members of WAN-IFRA's International Newspaper Color Quality Club 2016–2018 (INCQC) have been announced by WANIFRA: 85 newspaper titles produced by 64 publishing and printing companies in 26 countries have achieved membership for two years. Once every two years since 1994 the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, WAN-IFRA, has offered newspapers worldwide an opportunity to demonstrate their colour printing excellence by organising a print-quality competition. Newspapers that succeed in qualifying for inclusion in the list of the world’s best printers can draw on this distinction to optimise their work processes, motivate their personnel, improve their standing among their readers, and impress demanding advertising customers. Participating in this year’s competition were 128 companies from all

over the world. Club membership is offered to all companies that show they can produce high-quality newspapers consistently over an extended time period. Evaluation of newspapers is divided into two parts – an evaluation based on objective measurements made on a test element (WAN-IFRA Cuboid) that newspapers have to print every day of one week per month for a period of three months; and a visual inspection by a jury of international newspaper experts. Participating newspapers must prove that they can consistently print in accordance with proven international quality standards and also ensure that the newspaper copy is clean and free of quality defects. With their successful participation in the competition, the companies have demonstrated that they can supply newspaper printing of outstanding quality and offer read-

ers and advertisers high-quality products. The Color Quality Club is more than a technical printing competition, since it offers participating companies the additional possibility to benchmark their printing quality against recognised international standards and improve it. “INCQC 2016-18 was tougher than the previous editions of the competition. We asked newspapers to print the WAN-IFRA Cuboid test element every day of one week per month for three consecutive months, and we picked the date for evaluating the copies,” said Manfred Werfel, deputy CEO of WAN-IFRA. “Still, 64 companies have secured membership into this prestigious club. It is proof that quality continues to be a passionate area for printers and they are committed to produce highquality products for their readers and advertisers,” he added.

RKN Global cancels plan to build security printing plant in Slovakia Political opposition in Slovakia and uncertainty after Brexit cited as reasons UAE-based RKN Global has declined a 18-million-euro investment subsidy offered by the Republic of Slovakia for the construction and development of a security printing plant in Banska Bystrica. Prior to this announcement, RKN Global had taken steps to obtain 71 million euros in private funding in order to build a security printing plant in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia that would employ 1200 people. Slovakia’s planned contribution of 10 million euros in grants and 8 million euros in tax relief was viewed by RKN Global as an acceptable contribution from the government in exchange for RKN Global’s making a huge investment of 71 million euros. However, the positive reaction that RKN Global had expected from Slovakians for its planned investment in Banska Bystrica was mitigated by unforeseen opposition unrelated to RKN Global.

Political opposition members and the media attacked Prime Minister Fico and his ruling party calling the investment proposition from RKN Global ‘suspicious’. RKN Global believes the hostility was due to the timing of the 20 February 2016 public announcement which preceded national elections and was therefore viewed suspiciously.

According to RKN Global, this political opposition appears also to have manifested itself in attacks on their industrial partners from the Ukraine who are experts at producing secure documents such as passports, biometric ID and bank payment cards. In addition, Slovakia is about to lead the EU during a period of great uncertainty in light of the United Kingdom’s decision to exit from the EU. This uncertainty would make RKN Global’s investment riskier than it was back in March of this year. “The current turbulent political atmosphere in Slovakia and in the European Union has made it imprudent for RKN Global to continue its project to build a security printing plant in Banska Bystrica and it has led RKN Global to decline the subsidies—both in grants and in tax relief—offered by the Slovak government,” said RKN Global’s founder, Ronald Noble.

“Drupa

is not so much a trade show as it is a

roadmap”

The expo continues to demonstrate a direction for printing technology and the industry itself, as it has done so for the previous 11 editions I’ve attended

ME‌Printer July 2016

By Frank Romano, Professor Emeritus, RIT School of Media Sciences

22

Frank Romano has spent over 50 years in the printing and publishing industries. He is the author of over 52 books, including the 10,000-term Encyclopedia of Graphic Communications. He has consulted for major corporations, publishers, government, and other users of digital printing and publishing technology.

What were the important themes of drupa 2016? 1. B2 (4-up) and B1 (8-up) digital-based sheetfed presses. Quality is no longer an issue in digital versus offset as digital presses approach offset press speeds. 2. New inks that do not require coated or treated paper, or pre-coating. The ink revolution has begun. 3. 5- to 7-color digital presses that claim to print 95 percent of the Pantone colors. 4. Digital package printing with folding carton and corrugated digital presses galore. Digital printing of flexible film was demonstrated as were over 20 models of digital label presses. 5. Roll-fed digital presses from narrow to very wide were churning out “longer short runs” of color printing. 6. Systems for embellishing paper and other materials with laser diecutting, metallic printing, embossing, and coating. 7. Process automation with cloud-based workflows and systems for machine monitoring and service. 8. Printed electronics plus 3-D printing in many shapes and sizes.

ME‌Printer July 2016

B2+ digital – Many commercial printers need the B2+-format press platform that has served them well for offset printing. The reason is simple: every customer job has a different paper stock and sheetfed presses are better at this than roll-fed

presses. The new generation of B2+-format digital printing devices fit easily into existing production lines with minimal disruption. The smaller cutsheet digital devices are reaching the saturation point in jobs that can be effectively moved from the larger sheetfed offset presses. drupa 2016 saw the arrival of larger format digital cut-sheet color printing systems as well as off-line systems for special effects such as spot gloss, dimensional effects, and metallic foils. The progress in B2+ sheet-fed design is facilitated by wider inkjet arrays based on advances in inkjet head technology. The challenge for these larger format digital printing devices is to produce the quality, consistency, substrate support, and color registration while operating at high speed. Also important is integration of finishing technologies that leverage the benefits of digital print. The Landa S10 Nanographic Press runs at 13,000 B1 sheets per hour. Landa reported $450 Million in sales from the show. The Konica AccurioJet KM-1 switched from water-based ink to UV ink, which allows printing on any substrate. The ink is unique in that it is a matte version that eliminates the gloss of traditional UV inks. Komori was a partner and also sells a version of the press. Heidelberg Primefire 106, co-developed with Fujifilm for personalized packaging and other commercial and industrial applications (29.53" x 41.73") can print up to 2,500 sheets per hour in seven colors. Fujifilm announced that over 80 of its B2 version are in use worldwide. The prototype Canon Voy-

One of the industry's foremost keynote speakers and thought leaders, Frank has been quoted in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Times of London, USA Today, Business Week, Forbes, and many other newspapers and publications, as well as on TV and radio. ager is a B1 press that inkjets water-based ink to a blanket and then onto the substrate. RMGT (Ryobi Mitsubishi Graphic Technology) demonstrated a digital sheetfed press. The 4-color B2 press is based on a Ryobi 750 offset press structure uses Miyakoshi’s high viscosity liquid toner technology InfoTrends calls what is happening Inkjet 3.0. After many advances in production inkjet printing at drupa 2008 and 2012, this drupa had many new and improved print heads, higher print quality levels, wide printhead arrays, improved performance on a range of substrates, and expansion across a range of document, packaging, and decorative applications. Especially important were new ink formulations that can print on many substrates without special coatings, treatment, or pre-coating. These developments have brought digital printing into the forefront of the industry. The offset press vendors had little that was new and are now committed to a digital print strategy. Many of the digital press suppliers reported that their 5- to 7-color presses can achieve 95 percent of the Pantone colors. HP Indigo has long had the advantage of handling brand color but now Xerox, Kodak NexPress, Canon, Ricoh, Konica, and others have similar capabilities. Digital printing of packaging, digital embellishment, and digital die-cutting were integrated across many production lines for labels, folding cartons, corrugated packaging, flexible packaging, and direct-to-shape applications. drupa now has a significant package printing component.

Meeting the needs of different segments of the packaging market is a challenge that requires effective software, workflow, and finishing if the advantages of digital print for the entire supply chain are to be gained. Digital printing system vendors must understand the magnitude of this. Landa, Kodak, Xerox and others showed printing on flexible films. The Gallus Labelfire 340, an 8-color UV inkjet label press was available with inline diecutting and other finishing options. The EFI Nozomi is a sheetfed, LED-curing inkjet press built to print corrugated boards in a single pass at speeds up to 75 linear meters (246 linear feet) per minute. HP announced something similar with no specs and possible delivery in 2018. HP Indigo is doing extremely well with its fleet of B2 liquid toner printer/presses for many applications. Laser cutting and creasing, particularly for folding carton applications, is also advancing, and for some of these devices the focus is on a B1 sheet size. For the off-line digital devices used for special effects, the B1 sheet size opens up opportunities because these systems are capable of supporting conventional presses as well as digital printers. Digital paper cutting and creasing are the functions performed by equipment from Highcon, which made its drupa debut in 2012. The product line now consists of three machines—Beam, Euclid III, and Pulse—that create special effects for labels, packages, commercial and display products, greeting cards, clothing, corrugated cartons, and point-of-sale applica-

tions. A system in prototype, the Highcon Shape, cuts paperboard into molds for spectacular 3D objects. Highcon systems crease and cut without conventional die tooling. Sheets can be laser-cut with intricate patterns for on-demand, smallrun production of boxes and other items. This makes it possible to create high-value versioned and personalized packages that would be costprohibitive to produce using analog finishing methods. Roll-fed dominates the digital printing arena. Canon/Océ, HP, Kodak, Ricoh, Screen, Xeikon, Xerox, and others, including suppliers, who have mounted inkjet heads from HP and Kodak on roll-fed mechanisms, all had new and improved systems. These devices are finding wide application and dominate where “longer short runs” are required. The high-speed Xeikon Trillium uses liquid toner for packaging applications. Embellishment and special effects – Offset print processes have typically printed special effects beyond process color such as spot gloss, flood coats, foils, and corporate color matching. This kind of embellishment is now accelerating for digital print. Electrophotographic devices are using effects like printed metallic, dimensional, clear gloss, spot colors, fluorescent, security and other embellishments to differentiate the printed products and provide added value. Inkjet, particularly with ultraviolet (UV) curing inks, is extending this with some eye-popping results that leverage dimensional clear and metallic foil. The use of hybrid configurations, including those that leverage electrophotography and inkjet together, will have compelling applications in commercial and packaging markets. Many off-line special effect solutions are now able to support larger format conventional sheet sizes. The Scodix E106 enhancement press for the commercial printing and folding carton market is a digital press delivering enhancement solutions. Offered in a B1 (1060x760mm) format at up to 4,000 sph, it can provide effects for embossing, glittering, foiling, coating, and more in a single pass. MGI also has a line of enhancement devices. Lana showed a metallizing system that has zero waste. Industry 4.0 and the industrialization of print – System suppliers have talked about how production data can be used to drive operational efficiency and predict service calls. Cloudenabled production data tracking is now making data-driven production a reality. Most systems

are based on a single vendor platform with performance benchmarking across peers with similar equipment. Automated workflows make it easy for production management to assess and react based on real-time data. Semi-autonomous print production and robotic automation will establish a foundation for a new industrial revolution that is based upon automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. This will lower labor involvement and bring work back that has been lost to other parts of the world. Printed electronics and 3D printing will likely have a sizeable impact moving forward. drupa had two halls devoted to new technology. Their Cube presentations and touchpoints helped to educate attendees about these new technologies. They have great potential but we need to figure how to make money with them. There were lesser, but important, themes. Integrated finishing, improved color management, more automated workflows, and new no-process plates stood out. Even though slightly smaller than previous years, the show was overwhelming. HP had their own building, and Heidelberg shared theirs with thirdparty partners. The announcement that the next drupa would take place in 2020 instead of 2019 was a relief. Few vendors were looking forward to making the marketing investments required for drupa on a 3-year cycle. Final attendance reached 260,000, down from 318,000 at drupa 2012, much of that drop attributed to the shortening of the show from 14 to 11 days. Sales reports from exhibitors have been very positive.

A roadmap for the future of the printing industry

26

The re-positioning of drupa and its focus on future themes such as functional printing packaging printing, and 3D printing, as well as its shortened duration of 11 days has led to a resurgent interest in the opportunities for the printing industry to reinvent itself. The takeaway was that be it publication, commercial, packaging or industrial printing, printing technology offers matching solutions for all of these applications while opening up new lines of business and business models at the same time.

Claus Bolza-Schünemann, chairman of the drupa Committee and chairman of the board at Koenig & Bauer, points out that the print industry is constantly re-inventing itself and offers a wealth of high-potential facets. “This is precisely what drupa 2016 has very impressively proven. We were able to experience a highly innovative industry here in the 19 exhibition halls, one that has succeeded in moving out of the “valley of tears” and grasping the future by the neck,” he says.

Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, president & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf observes: “Customers – with very few exceptions – no longer come with large delegations or as part of a company outing to drupa. It is rather the top managers that travel to Düsseldorf today – and from 188 countries to this drupa.

Amid the flurry of big announcements, product launches, technology, application, and prototype showcases, the biggest newsmakers at drupa 2016 were the people, products, and conversations around inkjet, B1 format, digitization, packaging, automation, collaboration, and 3D printing.

Print in all its diversity has made a strong comeback Two announcements made a few days before the start of the trade fair underscore KBA’s goals to systematically expand its position in the packaging market: KBA plans to takeover Spanish diecutter manufacturer Iberica AG S.A. from the Cerutti Group in Italy, and KBA-Sheetfed has joined forces with Xerox Corporation in America to develop a digital B1 sheetfed press, the KBA VariJET 106 Powered by Xerox, for folding carton printing. Alongside the partnership of KBA-Digital & Web in Würzburg with global print enterprise R.R. Donnelley for its own RotaJET series and with HP for the HP T1100S PageWide Web Press for the corrugated market, this is KBA’s third partnership with a large American company in the digital print market. Claus Bolza-Schünemann announced a decidedly positive closing verdict on this year’s trade show. “Print in all its diversity has made a strong comeback following structural shifts over the past eight years. You could feel it in the halls that most companies had done their homework and adapted to new market realities. We were very positively surprised by the quantity, quality and internationality of the visitors. Many came really well prepared and with clear requirements which made consulting easier. I agree with the statements of some industry colleagues who say this was ‘the best drupa since 2000.”

Partnership with Xerox to target folding carton market

Claus Bolza-Schünemann

Together with SAP, KBA Digital & Web has developed the application software ‘Predictive Maintenance & Service’ for its print customers. SAP delivers the software, and KBA delivers the data and its industry know-how. Predictive Maintenance (PM) is an advancement of traditional maintenance approaches and a key component of an Industry 4.0 or KBA 4.0 environment. Sensors which have been embedded in a raft of presses for over many years provide status data on a variety of press components. The goal is to recognise errors promptly based on indicative patterns to be able to initiate preventive measures before the error leads to press downtime. Press downtimes and costs for the user can be considerably reduced through Predictive Maintenance compared to periodical maintenance work.

Entry in postpress and expansion in packaging markets

KBA sees growth prospects in all packaging segments. The company aims to significantly expand its market share especially in flexible packaging printing, a field it entered only two and a half years ago. KBA sees opportunities with glass decoration and coding technology mainly in China and the Far East, the main growth market for all types of packaging.

Ralf Sammeck, CEO of KBA-Sheetfed Solutions, expects synergy effects in the folding carton market from the entry into postpress given the largely identical customer base. The press manufacturer also does not rule out the return to the large sheetfed flexo market for corrugated printing in which KBA was active over 10 years ago with the Corrugraph previously built at its U.S. plant. KBA has the know-how and users of the first Corrugraph series are extremely satisfied with their presses. Ralf Sammeck announced the comprehensive management of the global sales network for all Group units, targeted expansion in Asia, Latin America and Africa, increased use of the service potential of the installed machine base and the expansion of the service spectrum as part of KBA 4.0.

Realignment and growth in digital printing

Christoph Müller, CEO of KBA-Digital & Web, reported on the successful alliance with HP in the digital corrugated printing market segment. The American technology group has ordered five HP T1100S with a gigantic web width of 2.8m for high-volume inkjet printing from KBADigital & Web. KBA-Digital & Web continues to build web offset presses for commercial and newspaper printing. However, growth prospects can be seen predominantly in digital printing, in industrial markets new to KBA, such as decor printing, and in expanding services for own and third-party web presses. The latter are handled successfully by subsidiary PrintHouseService.

Xerox announced that it would make production inkjet presses more accessible and affordable for print services providers. The company demonstrated new ink and packaging capabilities including: Xerox High Fusion Ink – a new ink that enables inkjet printing on traditional offset coated

stocks eliminating the need for pre or post paper treatment; a clear toner for the fifth station of the Xerox iGen 5 Press; and Xerox Direct to Object Inkjet Printer – inkjet printing on 3D objects as small as bottle caps and as large as football helmets and shoes, eliminating the need for labels in many retail and manufacturing applications. “Despite the promise of inkjet technology, many print providers struggle with embracing it because of cost and other challenges. Xerox is disrupting inkjet. We have two new platforms and a wide range of products designed to make inkjet more accessible and affordable for print providers,” says Robert Stabler, senior vice president and general manager, Global Graphic Communications Business Group, Xerox.

Cut-sheet Xerox Brenva and continuous feed Xerox Trivor 2400 inkjet presses

The two presses are the first in a new series of

inkjet offerings to come from Xerox – the Brenva HD to the cut-sheet inkjet market and Trivor 2400 with the Xerox IJ Print Server powered by Fiery to the continuous feed inkjet market. Each will enable print providers to drive the production of high-value applications such as direct mail, transactional, books and catalogs. Incorporating many of the paper-path components of the Xerox iGen, the Brenva HD offers an inline spectrophotometer to assist with calibration and profiling; object-oriented color management to distinguish text, graphics and images and optimizes the image quality of each accordingly; and K-only mode so it will run as a monochrome press. Xerox, XMPie, A Xerox Company, Solimar and Mueller Martini demonstrated a new end-to-end workflow solution for personalized catalog production on the Trivor 2400. The Xerox Personalized Catalog solution uses Xerox FreeFlow Core to automate the entire workflow process, XMPie PersonalEffect to create customized content to meet tailored requests from customers, and Mueller Martini’s Presto II Digital Saddle Stitcher to bind and finish the product.

Marketing automation workflow

XMPie demonstrated a broad range of applications – from packaging through direct mail, promotional, and informational – all powered by

XMPie software technology. All demonstrated applications showcased the power of individually relevant and creatively compelling multichannel customer communications that are integrated with a marketing automation workflow from planning to deployment. From an industry perspective, the key applications demonstrated with XMPie solutions were labels and packaging, and the more traditional print applications of direct mail, catalogues information and promotion. “Brand executives, marketing professionals, and service providers, all know that print-media, when used as the sole communication channel (e.g., in classical direct mail), is losing its appeal. Interestingly, at the same time, the marketing community is recognizing that digital communications are far less effective than originally expected,” says Jacob Aizikowitz, president, XMPie. “Not surprisingly, multichannel communications, where print and digital media are cleverly combined into individually relevant communications streams, deliver explosive marketing results. Creating such powerful multichannel communications stream is all about the ability to create individually relevant touch-points that are interconnected through a marketing automation workflow in a coherent and synergistic fashion. This is the magic that will help marketing to successfully engage prospects, retain customers, and, overall, deliver the desired business results.”

drupa Post Show Report Digitization and collaboration create growth opportunities

Dr. Gerold Linzbach and Shigetaka Komori

New offerings from Heidelberg are aimed primarily at the growing market for packaging and high-quality commercial printing. The company launched its ‘Fire’ product line comprising its entire digital printing portfolio. The Heidelberg Primefire 106 digital printing system developed in collaboration with Fujifilm is designed to open up new market segments by making industrial digital printing more flexible. The medium-term goal is for digital business to account for over 10 percent of total sales at Heidelberg. The CEO's of Fujifilm and Heidelberg, Shigetaka Komori and Dr. Gerold Linzbach, respectively, announced that the two organizations will continue to seek further collaboration to target growth potentials in the printing industry. Both companies

have complementary expertise with Fujifilm’s strengths in material science, core inkjet capability, and system development, and Heidelberg’s capabilities in system design, manufacturing and end-to-end workflow. “The reorientation of Heidelberg is showing positive results. An industrial digital inkjet printing solution enables both operational excellence and new business models for an expanding set of new applications. This collaboration and the launch of Primefire underscore the traction we are getting with our new digital strategy. We’re looking to achieve further growth in the future with our investments in the digital and services business. The high level of customer interest at drupa confirms we’ve adopted the right strategy,” says Gerold. “We are now seeing the outcome of our strong partnership resulting in this completely new system design in less than 24 months through our codevelopment with Heidelberg. This collaboration is a key element of our strategic direction, as it enables us to drive innovation in industrial digital printing with our inkjet technology,” adds Shigetaka.

Primefire 106 B1 industrial digital printer

The new sheet-fed production system is based on inkjet technology from Fujifilm and the Heidelberg Peak Performance platform from its offset technology, establishing a new category for industrial printing applications in the B1 (707x1000mm) format. The Primefire 106 enables packaging printers in the production of variable or personalized packaging. The digital printing system offers 1,200 x 1,200 dpi at a printing speed of up to 2,500 sheets per hour, achieving production volumes of up to 1.5 million sheets per month in future productivity modes. The 7-color inkjet system with Heidelberg Multicolor technology also covers up to 95 per cent of the Pantone color space.

From ‘Push to Start’ to ‘Push to Stop’

Heidelberg believes a novel approach is required for press operation, to free operators from the burden of routine tasks and to support them with intelligent systems so that they can transform the technical potential of their machines into actual productivity. The company calls its new operating philosophy ‘Push to Stop’. Whereas

until now processes were actively started by the operator, in future the press will do this itself. The operator only interrupts the autonomously running process chain if necessary. This raises the effectiveness of print production to previously unattainable levels, enables better planning of processes, and continuous process monitoring lowers the error rate. The Push to Stop operating concept is achieved on Speedmaster presses by means of the new Prinect Press Center XL 2 machine control station with smart Intellistart 2 user software and its assistance systems such as ‘Intelliguide’. The operator can clearly see and follow all steps displayed on the large Wallscreen XL. With this new human-machine interface, the operator can navigate processes and retains an overview, even when there are numerous job changes. This can then be expanded all the way to autonomous printing. This way an intelligent solution is established, in which the press automatically works through the queued jobs. The operator only interrupts the process if necessary. The Push to Stop concept is available for the new generation Speedmaster, covering the series XL 75, CX/SX 102, XL 106 and XL 145/162, which are equipped with the Prinect Press Center XL 2, the Wallscreen XL, and AutoPlate Pro or AutoPlate XL 2 and Inpress Control 2 auto¬mation components.

Speedmaster XL 106 sheetfed offset press

The new Speedmaster XL 106 can be ordered as a straight or a perfecting press. It produces

up to 18,000 sheets an hour, and can be flexibly configured to suit individual customer requirements. Heidelberg exhibited two Speedmaster XL 106 presses at drupa – the Speedmaster XL 106 six-color press with double coating is aimed at packaging and label printers to achieve fast production and setup of jobs with high-quality finishing, and the Speedmaster XL 106 eightcolor perfecting press is aimed at commercial and web-to-print printers, who face the challenge of frequent job changes. To achieve automation, the Speedmaster XL 106 has a new feature called the ‘Hycolor Multidrive’, which can operate the inking and dampening units independently from the main drive. For example, the inking units are washed while the main drive is responsible for changing the coat-

ing plates, or washing the rubber blankets and impression cylinders. Individual inking units can be shut down if they are not needed.

Prinect Press Center XL 2 control station

The heart of the new-generation Speedmaster XL 106 is the Prinect Press Center XL 2 machine control station. It assumes the role of the digital interface in the workflow as well as the intelligent human/machine interface which helps the operator to fully exploit the performance of the machine. The Prinect Press Center XL 2 includes the patented Intellistart 2 software which automatically organizes the optimum job change, independently initiates automated makeready processes, and gives the operator clear instructions when manual intervention is required. To ensure the operator has a complete overview, Intellistart 2 has been integrated into the new Wallscreen XL and is divided into four areas. Jobs released for a machine are listed in a ‘Job Queue’, and can be moved using drag and drop. Intellistart 2 automatically works through these jobs in the defined order.

On this platform, customers can order consumables — and, in the future, selected service parts. Payments can be made on receipt of an invoice or by credit card. In the future, the shipping status will be trackable in real time.

Gallus Labelfire 340 industrial digital converting press

Gallus DCS 340, the modular, digital converting system developed by Heidelberg/Gallus and Fujifilm has a new name, Gallus Labelfire 340. An inkjet printing module integrated into a Gallus machine platform combines the latest digital printing technology with the benefits of conventional printing and further processing technology. By combining the strengths of digital printing with an inline finishing process that has been specially optimized for digital printing, the Gallus Labelfire enables users to varnish, embellish and further process labels inline – from the roll to the finished die-cut label in a single production operation. The Gallus Labelfire 340 also has conventional converting modules taken from the Gallus ECS 340. The entire system is integrated into Heidelberg’s print media workflow Prinect.

Resource saving and digital printing can shape a new future Fujifilm is focusing its efforts on two areas to achieve value from innovation in the print industry. The first is the company's world leading inkjet technologies, brought together at drupa 2016 under a new brand name ‘Fujifilm Inkjet Technology’, to deliver quality, productivity and performance. The second is a focus on its conventional technologies, products and services to optimise traditional print processes, provide resource savings and improve profitability, and in the process help printers minimise their environmental impact.

Superia ZD processless plate

The new Superia ZD plate has developed for resource savings in material, labor, energy, environment and water, making it suitable for the latest UV press technologies including LED-UV and H-UV printing. The Superia ZD processless plate incorporates three new technologies — MGZ, HDN and s-HDS. MGZ is a new graining structure, which has been added to Fujifilm's MGV technology used in the Superia PRO-T3 plate, to ensure the optimum ink/ water balance on press. This new plate structure enhances the adhesion between the substrate and the exposed image, further improving the robustness of the plate during printing. In order to ensure compatibility with UV inks, a new accelerator has been introduced. As a result, optical energy is used to cross-link the binders to produce a high density network (HDN). This HDN technology ensures the exposed image has a higher resistance against UV inks and related press chemicals. Fujifilm's newly developed s-HDS technology optimises the water holding properties of the surface of the non-image area. This enhances the resistance to toning and improves ink/water balance while retaining the fast on-press development characteristics of Superia PRO-T3.

in the packaging sector, and traditional analogue printing, the mainstream in the flexible package field, faces difficulties regarding turnaround, cost and environmental performance. This has led Fujifilm to further develop the technology used in the Jet Press 720S to create an ink technology for water-based inkjet capable of inkjet printing on flexible packaging film. The bleeding of inkjet ink is an issue in the nonabsorbent film substrates used in the flexible packaging, but the application of ‘Rapic technology’ created during the development of the Jet Press 720S enables an ink droplet to retain its stability where it has landed, and clear image reproduction is made possible by combining with proprietary undercoating technology. The company claims that the combination of these technologies with Fujifilm's high-definition Samba printheads has achieved productivity of more than 30 metres per minute while printing at 1200dpi high-definition, in full color, enabling compatibility for digitalisation for the reverse printing of flexible packaging.

Acuity 3200R LED UV inkjet printer Water-based ink development for flexible The Acuity LED 3200R roll printer builds on the packaging flexibility of the Acuity LED 1600 II UV inkjet printer, launched in 2015 and the original Acuity LED 1600, introduced in 2012, extending the print width up to 3.2m and achieving a top speed of 110sqm per hour. The printer features eight ink channels as standard (cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light cyan, light magenta, white and clear) and utilises Fujifilm’s Uvijet ink range.

ME‌Printer July 2016

Fujifilm is commercialising various inkjet related products under the Fujifilm Inkjet Technology brand and has introduced the B2 size digital press, the Jet Press 720S, originally made for commercial printing in the graphic arts industry. According to Fujifilm, the trend for short-runs, high-mix and quick turnarounds is ever-increasing

drupa Post Show Report For the first time, there’s a strong market pull for digital printing

ME‌Printer July 2016

Benny Landa

34

Since Nanography technology was unveiled as a proof-of-concept at drupa 2012, Landa Group has been developing a line of Nanographic printing presses for commercial packaging and publishing markets by employing Nanotechnology, the manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and supra-molecular scale. Landa sheetfed and web Nanographic printing presses offer the versatility of digital printing combined with the qualities and speed of offset. The Landa Nanographic printing process differs from other printing processes in that the ink does not wet the paper as in inkjet printing. Landa Nanographic printing technology converts the ink image into a super-thin polymeric film which is then laminated onto the paper surface, avoiding typical inkjet issues of paper saturation and enabling the creation of high quality images at high speed – on any kind of paper. The Landa Nano-Metallography process introduces the science of nanotechnology to the ancient art of graphics metallization. Nano-Metallography is designed to replace costly, inefficient

processes used today, including foil stamping and metallized substrates. According to the company, the zero waste process applies a luxurious metallic effect at less than 50% of the current cost. Benny Landa, chairman, Landa Group, comments: “Drupa 2016 will be remembered as the inflection point in the industry’s transition from mechanical printing to digital. In the past, digital printing vendors had to try to convince the market that digital is the way to go. For more than 20 years, digital printing has excelled as a solution for niche markets. Previously it was a ‘push’ selling motion. Now, for the first time, the situation has reversed. There is a very strong ‘pull’ from the market, driven by both customers and brand-owners, who are now demanding digital printing. It seems that the market leaders – in packaging, commercial printing and in publishing – have come to the realization that they simply must go digital.” The company has entered into strategic partnerships with Quad/Graphics, the largest publication printer in the US, and with Cimpress, the global leader in mass customization and web-toprint. In addition, Landa announced that it will deploy its presses at beta sites in Europe and the USA during 2017.

Landa S10 digital printer for packaging

Engineered for the packaging and converting industries, the single-sided B1 (41 in. / 1,050 mm) format Landa S10 Nanographic printing press enables just-in-time mainstream efficiency for the production of folding carton, POP/POS and corrugated boxes. The Landa S10 press prints 13,000 sheets per hour on off-the-shelf substrates in thickness from 2.4-32 pt. (60-800μm). With a crossover point of around 30,000 boxes and higher when ganging jobs or adding variable barcodes, the Landa S10 is offered as a digital solution for more than 50% of all packaging jobs.

Landa W10P digital printer for publishing

The Landa W10P Nanographic printing press is a new meter-wide (41 in.) perfecting press with two printing engines. Designed for the publishing, catalog and direct mail segments, it prints at 200 meters per minute (656 ft./min) on a variety of coated and uncoated papers, light boards and metallic substrates. According to the company, Nanography will enable customers to move their mainstream journal and magazine publishing, catalogs and direct mail pages from offset to digital, for a reduced total cost of ownership (TCO) and improved mar-

gins. The Landa W10P press will start shipping to customers in late 2017. “Fourteen years of nanotechnology research has enabled us to make tremendous breakthroughs in the quality, speed and cost of digital printing. With the size and caliber of these customers who will be deploying our Nanographic printing presses, and the volumes of digital print that they will produce across the globe, we can truly say that digital printing is becoming mainstream. The Landa W10P Nanographic printing press is up to 24 times faster than any other commercial quality digital press and can print more than two million magazine pages in a single 8-hour shift,” says Benny.

Both models can handle coated, uncoated and textured stocks up to 350 gsm. Both Plockmatic booklet makers will be commercially available to Canon customers from September 2016 and will initially be compatible with the Canon imagePRESS C800, C700, C10000VP and C8000VP presses. Canon Europe has also partnered with German media handling specialists BDT Print Media to develop an integrated solution for users of the imagePRESS C10000VP and C8000VP production colour presses to produce banner format applications at high volumes. Integrating BDT’s VX-Series feeder with the imagePRESS production engines extends the range of applications that can be produced on the press, such as dust jackets for books, 6-page A4 folders, A4R landscape brochures, calendars, posters and so on. The BDT VX-Series banner feeder can handle stacks up to 500mm and works with media from 60 to 350gsm, and paper lengths up to 762mm. The feeder incorporates BDT’s patented Tornado ‘whirlwind’ technology for media separation, lift and transport, ensuring sensitive and reliable handling of a full range of media, including coated and uncoated paper and board, textured substrates and synthetics. Media feed param-

eters for repeat jobs can be stored in the device’s memory, enabling automatic setup to reduce job changeover times for optimum productivity.

Voyager – new prototype inkjet photo press

Based on newly developed Canon inkjet technology, the seven-colour prototype B2+ duplex press is aimed at print service providers producing high added-value applications, such as catalogues, brochures, marketing materials and customer publications for luxury brands, real estate, food and travel where the quality of image reproduction is paramount. It could also be used for the production of classic photographic applications such as premium quality photo books, single photos and commemorative prints.

View & Cut – new prototype workflow automation for wide format finishing

The view & cut technology is the result of a col-

laborative project between Canon and Zünd Skandinavien to further automate the finishing of printed output from Canon wide format printers on the Océ ProCut G3 and S3 flatbed devices. The solution incorporates Canon’s EOS imaging technology in a ceiling-mounted system, which recognises proprietary registration marks on the printed media to automatically identify jobs on the flatbed surface. The view & cut technology converts this data to an instruction to the Océ ProCut Vision software, which then processes each job on the ProCut surface based on its individual finishing specifications, including cutting, creasing and kiss cutting. The co-development of the view & cut technology sets out to dramatically reduce manual operator intervention at the finishing stage, and to semi-automate finishing of both sheet and roll output from one or more Canon wide format print engines. It offers the ability for PSPs to nest multiple jobs on sheets or rolls and to automate the finishing of these jobs.
