Risk of Print Supply Fakes Hit Unprecedented Levels in 2018
Businesses are at more risk of being sold counterfeit print supplies than ever before, according to a recent study by Harris Interactive. Already costing the global economy $3 billion per year, according to the Imaging Supplies Coalition, the growing risk of fakes is driven by an increasingly broad supplier ecosystem, lack of certainty by buyers that their purchases are genuine, and a lack of awareness of the risks of purchasing counterfeit goods. According to Harris Interactive surveys, the past four years have shown a 30% plus drop in compa-
nies working with a trusted, primary supplier, and a 27% increase in companies buying purely on availability. With a broader, less trusted supplier network, SMEs are losing the ability to discern the authenticity of their cartridges with absolute confidence. All regions heavily affected by counterfeiting, in particular the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa, with almost three quarters of businesses surveyed feeling confident their purchases were genuine. While the market trends are concerning, Print OEMs are continuing their significant efforts to battle this issue by actively engaging with local authorities. Across EMEA over the last five years, approximately 12 million counterfeits and components have been seized by local authorities. Many companies have also conducted inspections of reseller stock and suspicious deliveries for customers. In addition, vendors have actively educated customers and partners to be vigilant against fake printing supplies. Recent successes across the EMEA region underscore the impact of these efforts:
• Authorities in the UAE disrupted the criminal operations of an internationally active syndicate that had assembled counterfeits of cartridges of well known brands, resulting in the seizure of around 46,000 illicit items. • In a major series of raids, Russian authorities dismantled a criminal syndicate that had been wholesaling counterfeit cartridges. Officials seized over 215,000 illicit items while raiding residential and warehouse sites in the Volga region and the Moscow area. • Officials in the Riyadh, Saudi Arabia recently disrupted a criminal ring that had manufactured fake cartridges for printers and sold the fakes in bulk, seizing 44,000 illicit items such as fake toner cartridges and components for assembling fakes. • Authorities in Kenya and Uganda have dismantled numerous wholesalers and resellers of counterfeit cartridges for printers, raiding warehouses, outlet stores, and seized fakes from a shipping container in the areas of Kampala, Mombasa, and Nairobi and confiscating 16,000 illicit items.

OCTAL Recognised by Global Certification Scheme
6
In recognition of the world-class quality of OCTAL’s operations at their PET Sheet Plants in Oman, the clear rigid packaging material suppliers have been awarded the highest achievable certification for production excellence. The company was given a coveted internationally-recognized AA rating following a recent rigorous audit of their Salalah facilities against the requirements of British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials Issue 5. OCTAL CEO Nicholas Barakat expressed his delight at the award, which provides extra protection for end users and confirms the company is continuing to achieve exceptional standards at our
manufacturing facilities. He said: “This level of certification rewards OCTAL’s level of commitment to excellence and recognizes the quality, safety and compliance of our products and plant procedures. By awarding OCTAL the highest rating achievable to the packaging industry, the British Retail Consortium has recognized we put customers first and operate to the highest standards. The achievement is a credit to the hard work and dedication of our team.” Sought around the world by major packaging businesses, the BRC Standard is a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) recognized standard and is a symbol of best practice that demonstrates that OCTAL is highly proficient in upholding
product safety and reliability. The award of the BRC Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials means the company can now include the organization’s prestigious logo on their packaging. OCTAL was granted the premier certification rating for the sector following a stringent two-day audit process for each plant, during which independent inspectors scrutinized six criteria. During their visit, auditors examined OCTAL’s senior management strategies, hazard and risk systems, product quality and safety, site standards, product and process controls, and staff. OCTAL’s Quality Systems Engineer Walaa Sidahmed Rahma described the audit program as the toughest in the industry.
Wagamama Goes Green with Paper Straws Bin Mirza International’s popular pan-Asian restaurant chain wagamama has announced it will no longer be providing plastic straws in its Oman restaurant, but will be offering biogradeable paper alternatives. The decision follows a total ban on plastic straws in wagamama’s UK restaurants as part of the restaurant’s exciting journey towards becoming a more sustainable business. Due to their lightweight nature, plastic straws have been found to be extremely harmful to the environment and to marine life in particular. They do not biodegrade but instead slowly break into smaller pieces known as microplastics, which are then mistaken for food by marine creatures. More than one million seabirds alone die every year worldwide from eating plastic straws and choking on them. Wagamama is a member of the
UK-based Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) established in 2010, which helps food-service businesses implement sustain-
able practices. The not-for-profit organisation has a wide range of members from Michelin-starred restaurants to workplace canteens.

First 3D Printed House to be Ready in Sharjah This Year
Sharjah's first 3D printed house could be ready by the third quarter of this year at the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTI Park). The entire house will be printed with state-of-the-art technology and the design will stay true to its UAE-roots. The move aims to establish Sharjah as the preferred destination for future architecture as the construction sector is gradually changing globally. SRTI Park has announced that it has attracted the attention of several international companies that specialise
in the construction of buildings with 3D Printing techniques. The project is as a result of triple helix collaboration of government, private, and academia, where CyBe Construction, a Dutch organisation, has been selected as the technology provider to build the 3D house in SRTI Park. The American University of Sharjah (AUS) will support in research and talent. The university is working on the development of this technology and training students through conducting applied scientific research by students, faculty members and a number of researchers from specialised companies, including Meet, which focuses on the constructions of 3D Printed structures. A group of students from the Faculty of Engineering at AUS will get hands-on training on this technique. By introducing 3D Printing, SRTI Park is creating a proactive and supportive environment for experiments and research in the field of future building technologies and fourth generation technologies. The tech-
nology is considered to be one of the most innovative and reliable ways to build an integrated residential unit through the use of digital machineries. In addition, the technology is expected to reduce the costs of collection, transport and construction. Hussain Al Mahmoudi, CEO of SRTI Park, said, "We are delighted to launch this ambitious project, which translates the vision of the park and its ambitious strategy to introduce all kinds of reliable future technologies to serve and facilitate people. In order to become a regional development center for 3D printing construction, we aim to create a suitable research and development environment for the private, academic and public sector to benefit." He added that this project comes at a time when the cost of traditional construction is increasing. This type of construction has many advantages such as easy access to complex designs and simple modification with access to parts of different sizes, which results in shorter duration of implementation and cost.

Two Patients in Dubai Get 3D Printed Knee Replacements
8
In a surgery conducted at the Burjeel Hosptial for Advanced Surgery, two patients suffering from osteoarthritis were fitted with individualised 3D printed knees that were adapted exactly to their individual needs. The patients — Dr. Al Noor Muntasir Al Hassan, 48, an Afghan expatriate, and Salman Ahmad Quraishi, 66, a Pakistani expatriate, both had destroyed their knees in separate incidents. Al Hassan, a doctor with the World Health Organisation suffered from osteoarthritis while Qureshi had malalignment of the knee caps leading to severe arthritis. Knee replacements surgery is on the rise and is likely to increase to more than a million surgeries per year by 2030 and three million by 2060 worldwide. Technological advancements in 3D printing, increasing trends in customised 3D printing and
increasing public-private funding for 3D printing activities are the substantial driving factors of the market across the globe. Reports suggest that global 3D printing in the health care market was valued
approximately at $16.82 billion (AED 61.7 billion) in 2017, which is anticipated to grow with a healthy growth rate of more than 11.51 per cent over the forecast period 2018-2025.
XtreeE and Concreative to Set Up 3D Solutions Unit in UAE
ME Printer July 2012
XtreeE, a Paris-based technology company focusing on large-scale 3D-printing solutions for the architecture, engineering and construction industry, said it is collaborating with Concreative, the first large-scale concrete 3D printing company in the UAE, to open a new production unit in the emirates. The new unit, which will be operated by Concreative, aims to use the technology in 25 per cent of new construction in the next six years, incorporating XtreeE technology. This launch is in line with XtreeE’s strategy of structuring a network of more than 50 globally connected 3D printing units by 2025. XtreeE is also teaming with Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) architects on a new cultural project in North America to be unveiled later this year. The 3D printing market is projected to reach $40 billion by 2027 from just $70 million in 2017, according to
a report from SmarTech. Founded in 2015, XtreeE is a pioneer in large-scale additive manufacturing, primarily in concrete. The company assists clients with collaborative design and largescale prototype manufacturing as well as offers access to large-scale 3D printing systems. The French company has recently won major investment from TTWiiN Investment Partners, the innovation investment arm of US-based Thornton Tomasetti, an engineering consulting firm and a global leader in the design and optimisation of structures and systems. XtreeE’s latest round of funding includes investments from Shibumi International, a fully-owned subsidiary of Gulermak Heavy Industries, as well as an additional commitment from existing investor Vinci Construction. “There is a huge misconception within the AEC industry that 3D printing is a technology only of the
future,” remarked Ray Daddazio, the president of Thornton Tomasetti. “We see it as a technology of today. We are pleased to help XtreeE pioneer new applications that will enable project teams to push the frontiers of design through digital fabrication. XtreeE is not only on the leading edge of this technology, but has the capability to deliver optimized structures.” Thornton Tomasetti has been an early adopter of the technology. In 2015, the firm was part of the team that developed the Office of the Future, a 2,000-sq-ft building in Dubai that was designed by Gensler and created using a 20-ft tall 3D printer. "3D printing has moved rapidly from R&D labs to the field, and we currently collaborating on multiple projects in the Middle East, Africa and North America with an emphasis on sustainability, practicality and affordability," remarked Daddazio.

Caparol Paints Rebrands With 'Green' Product Packaging
Caparol Paints is rebranding its product packaging with new green buckets. With a ‘Go Green’ motto, the new look-and-feel of Caparol products is a significant improvement over the old packaging, said a company statement. This initiative falls in line with the UAE Vision 2021 National Agenda, which aims at sustainable infrastructure development in the country, it said.
This rebranding marks Caparol’s commitment to join hands for protecting the environmental interests of residents, businesses and organisations. Caparol said it takes the responsibility to find a balance through economy, environmental compatibility and quality of life. This includes protection of the environment, efficient use of resources
and creation of a comfortable living environment for the people. Mowaffaq Balish, commercial director ME at Caparol Paints, said, “We are proud to announce the rebranding of our product packaging with a ‘go green’ motto. With this, we aim at playing a key role in initiatives, which define and accelerate the growth of sustainable development. We care for the environment and believe in ecological advanced development while preserving the environment.” Balish added that sustainability is his company’s responsibility and it is the prime reason for them to rebrand all their packaging into ‘green’. “This also outlines a framework for building a responsibility and conscious infrastructure that applies a living system view to the business and inspires all our stakeholders and customers to follow a path of sustainable development,” he added.

Sharjah Publishing City Offers Ingram's Lightning Source Print-On-Demand Service
10
Signalling a landmark achievement for the UAE publishing sector, the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) and Ingram’s Lightning Source have signed an agreement to bring the world’s best print-on-demand (POD) service to Sharjah Publishing City Free Zone (SPCFZ). The agreement was signed by HE Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Chairman of SBA, and Shawn Morin, President and CEO of Ingram Content Group,
in the presence of John Ingram, Chairman of Ingram Industries, at the Book Expo America 2019. HE Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Chairman of SBA, pointed out that the key objective of this agreement and partnership is for Sharjah to provide inclusive publishing services to the market in the UAE and region, in addition to providing tools and solutions that would enable publishers to start their businesses in Sharjah and expand internationally. “Attracting this leading company from the USA to establish its business in Sharjah is the first step towards many agreements that will help in building a professional system of services in the publishing industry. This system will play a pivotal role in elevating the publishing industry which is witnessing a rapid development in Sharjah and the UAE. It will stimulate finding solutions to reduce the cost of storing, distribution, marketing and other challenges that face publishers,” he added.
Shawn Morin, President & CEO of Ingram Content Group, said, “We are pleased to have reached a terms agreement with the Sharjah Book Authority to open a print on demand facility in Sharjah. The addition of a Lighting Source location in Sharjah expands our global network of print on demand plants and will help publishers from all over the world reach their readers more quickly and efficiently in this important, and growing, market.” Print-on-demand services have been a game changer for the publishing business, worldwide. Traditional printing methods had publishers print large quantities of titles pre-empting sales demand, which often incurred huge shipping and storage costs. The printon-demand service eliminates these costs by offering publishers published materials in as less as 24 hours, which offers them the advantage of deciding print runs according to sales demand.

Sports Illustrated Sold to Authentic Brands
MEPrinter June 2019
Media company Meredith Corp has said that it has agreed to sell Sports Illustrated to U.S-based entertainment company Authentic Brands Group LLC for $110 million, as it looks to scale its digital media business. The companies also formed a strategic partnership to build a global media platform and develop broad-based licensing programs under the Sports Illustrated brand that will include product, original content and live events. The purchase includes New Yorkheadquartered Authentic Brands getting the intellectual property of the iconic magazine that will com-

prise of Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated Kids, Sportsperson of the Year, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, SI and SI TV, the companies said in a statement. Authentic Brands would take on the marketing, business development and licensing functions for the Sports Illustrated intellectual property and brand, which has over 120 million consumers, while the print magazine and SI.com would continue to function independently under Meredith and Editor-in-Chief Chris Stone and Publisher Danny Lee, the companies said. Meredith National Media Group
President Jon Werther said the company wants to fully integrate Sports Illustrated’s print and digital products into Meredith’s operations. Meredith in turn will pay ABG a licensing fee to operate them for a minimum of two years. Meredith, which acquired Sports Illustrated magazine as part of its $1.84 billion acquisition of Time Inc, had hired advisers to explore its sale along with considering options for Time, Fortune and Money magazines, as the company sees these titles as not playing to its core strength in women’s magazines.

Japanese Activist Shareholder Murakami Fails in Bid for Printing Firm Kosaido
Veteran activist shareholder Yoshiaki Murakami has failed to acquire a majority stake in printing firm Kosaido Co, his funds said, blaming the setback on the entrenched practices of corporate Japan. The failure of the country’s most prominent activist shareholder to buy control of the little-known company is likely to be seen as a victory for the old guard of Japan Inc, even as a new corporate code under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
has called on firms to boost returns and improve governance. Kosaido said shareholders had tendered 427,000 shares in the buy-out offer that expired a day earlier, or less than 5 percent of the minimum Murakami had sought. He was seeking to boost his stake to at least half and had offered 750 yen a share. His bid was less successful than the failed management buyout attempt in April backed by Bain
Capital, where shareholders tendered more than 5 million shares at the lower price of 700 yen, a difference his funds ascribed to the cozy relationships of corporate Japan. “More shareholders tendered their shares to the management buyout even though that offer price was lower than ours,” the two Murakami-backed funds, Minami Aoyama Fudosan and Reno, said in a statement. Together his funds own around 13.5 percent of Kosaido.

Prateek Metal Industries Invests in a Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 190
New Delhi-based printer Prateek Metal Industries has installed a Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 190, becoming the first to take receipt of the digital printer configured with a Brotech winder. The digital press was installed in April. Prateek Metal Industries will use its AccurioLabel 190 to cater to the growing demand

well as being the first of its kind to feature a Brotech winder, Prateek’s AccurioLabel 190 comes equipped with an AccurioPro Print Manager and is designed for minimal paper wastage, excellent media handling and convenient job management. Such features will help Prateek Metal Industries improve its profitability and business output, according to Manoj Arora, owner of Prateek Metal Industries. “The Konica Minolta brand has been driving a major transformation in the digital printing space through its range of innovative print and printing solutions,” he said. “This is why, when we were looking for a label and package printing solution, the AccurioLabel 190 was our top consideration. Print Shop Generates Additional $1 Million with 3D Printing
14
Print shop Media Resources, credits large format 3D printing for their annual revenue increase of $1 million. The veteran PSP has leveraged the technology in order to evolve their offering to suit the changing market. This Canadian company had been seeking out new avenues of profit, pushed by co-owner, Steve Gallow, and given the ever-present challenges of product commoditization. They found what they were looking for, seeing an amazing return on their investment in a Massivit 3D printer. Gallow has many insights about the market, especially what it was like being an early adopter of large format
3D printing. Steve Gallow often describes his experience of being an early adopter of digital printing as stumbling upon a lottery ticket. While he reaped the reward for a while, eventually the market would catch up and offer intense competition. That slowed his revenue, turning it into a “scratch off” lotto ticket. Eventually it trickled down to just trying to make a little money on razor-thin margins. “Due to commoditization, services like digital vinyl printing that used to be charged at $12 per square foot are marketed today at just $0.65 per square foot!” bemoans Gallow. Bringing in a large format
3D printer has helped Media Resources evolve their business and control their profitability to a much higher degree. Being one of the first owners of a Massivit 3D printer in Canada, they can set their own prices while offering services that simply don’t exist elsewhere. It’s a huge move that is already paying off. As one of the first owners of a digital printing press, Gallow understands how the excitement of a new technology can grow into an outstanding business opportunity. He had experienced how digital printing had been received and instantly understood what he had on his hands.
Australia Prints 46 Million Banknotes with Typo Australia has printed 46 million of its new $50 notes with a typo, the country’s Reserve Bank has said. The “new and improved” 50 Australian dollars banknote was rolled out in October 2018, with a host of new technologies designed to improve accessibility and prevent counterfeiting. But the yellow note also contains a typo that misspells the word “responsibility”. The RBA said the error would be fixed in future print runs. But for now, around 46 million of the new notes are in use across the country, news.com.au reported. These note features the Indigenous writer and inventor David Unaipon on one side, and Edith Cowan — Australia’s first female member of Parliament — on the other, as it has since 1995. The RBA printed “micro-text” on the note with excerpts of Unaipon’s book — “Legendary Tales of the Australian Aborigines” — and Cowan’s first speech to Parliament. The small error occurred on Cowan’s side in the text of her speech. “It is a great responsibilty [sic] to be the only woman here and I want to emphasise the neces-
sity which exists for other women being here,” it says. An RBA spokeswoman said the bank was “aware of it and the spelling will be corrected at the next print run”. An RBA release in October described Australia’s $50

They receive an order even from one box in three days as their shortest delivery time. Currently the maximum size they can print on their digital press is B2 as maximum, but in order to further expand their web-to-pack business, they were looking for B1 digital press that could meet their demanding customer needs. The first time they saw Heidelberg’s Primefire 106 was at drupa 2016 and they were impressed enough to ask Heidelberg to do print test with their challenging images. According to Kazuhiro Kajikawa, executive managing director of Ha-
coplay division, “The result of the print test was excellent. The print quality such as green and orange were outstanding and we felt that the quality of print by Primefire 106 was the most beautiful we have ever seen. The consistency of quality between first and 500th sheets was also amazingly stable that surprised even our offset press operator who was with me for the test. Other interesting feature of Primefire 106 for us is to be able to cover 95 % of Pantone color because we as packaging printer have to use a lot of special colors for package printing. By enlarging the size from A3 to B2, we were able to expand our business and we are expecting more by going for B1 size with Primefire 106.”

Kyoshin Paper and Package decided to choose Heidelberg Primefire 106 as their next digital press to expand their web-to-pack business on top of the traditional packaging business by signing a contract of the first Primefire 106 in Japan in April 2019. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will install the digital printing system in Kyoshin Paper and Package´s brand-new Kanto plant in summer this year. Kyoshin Paper and Package was founded in Kobe, Japan in summer of 1948. Since then, their “challenging spirit” is their beating heat of the company as a successful packaging service provider and currently 290 employees are working with the company. In 2013 the company expanded their packaging business

Heidelberg is creating a cloud based ecosystem for print, linking its online portal for ordering consumables, its reporting technology and its subscription services, now expanded to include Prinect and MIS. This will be developed into the HeiOS as a fully configured system for print by the opening of Drupa in a year’s time. A foundation stone comes through
of Keyline, says distributor Wayne Beckett. As part of Heidelberg that question is answered. The same argument could entice other software developers either to sell out to Heidelberg or else to make their applications through what Heidelberg hopes will be print’s app store. This comes under the umbrella of HeiOS. The deal will accelerate Crispy Mountain’s development path, enabling it to tap into Heidelberg's software expertise and to recruit further programmers of its own. They will be directed to creating versions for niche verticals. A books version will be followed by packaging and labels, tying in with Heidelberg’s strategic directions. Keyline already has extensive connectivity to third-party applications through its API. The approach will be expanded to plug in any number of independent thirdparty applications “to give print shops easier access to comprehensive services at the lowest possible administrative burden,” according to Heidelberg.

Global Print Expo 2019 Delivers Value-Added Return on Experience
18
FESPA Global Print Expo’s status as the leading international exhibition for speciality print and signage remains unchallenged, as the May 2019 event welcomed 20,780 individual visitors from 137 countries over the course of four days (Messe München, 14 – 17 May 2019). Consistent with previous events, the host country delivered the largest national delegation of visitors at 25% of the total number, with attendees travelling from across Germany, followed by Italy (7%) and Austria (5%). Overall, the exhibition attracted a diverse international audience from far beyond Europe, including visitors from as far afield as Israel, Turkey, China, Japan, the USA and Australia. Total attendance including repeat visits reached 34,104, with almost two thirds of all visitors committing two or more days to the show. 1 in 3 visitors were final decision-makers, cementing FESPA Global Print Expo’s status as a key buying event in the print industry calendar. FESPA Exhibitions Director, Roz Guarnori says: “The overall attendance figures indicate that there is a sustained interest in an exhibition like FESPA Global Print Expo. However, what has been most rewarding is the feedback on how the show has delivered in terms of ‘return on experience’, which suggests visitors and exhibitors are focusing more on the valuable insight and knowledge gathered from the
show and its features, rather than thinking exclusively in terms of cost per lead or ROI. The response is encouraging, especially for an event that has always aimed to inspire and highlight the possibilities that speciality print has to offer.” Digital print machinery was singled out as the key area of interest for 41% of visitors, followed by digital print consumables (31%). This is matched by the proportion of visitors interested in textile and fabric, demonstrating FESPA’s growing importance as an international meeting place for the textile printing and garment manufacturing communities. This is reflected in the launch of the new Sportswear Pro event, to be co-located with FESPA Global Print Expo in Madrid, Spain, March 2020. Consistent with FESPA’s mission to support print businesses with education and best practice guidance, the FESPA 2019 event programme included a range of immersive features such as Printeriors (printed interior décor), Print Make Wear (garment printing and production) and Colour L*A*B* (colour management), as well as the popular Trend Theatre, FESPA Awards and the World Wrap Masters vehicle wrapping championship. Collectively, the features attracted thousands of visitors through a combination of creative displays, engaging speakers, guided tours and practical demonstrations.
FESPA Global Print Expo 2019’s strapline, ‘An Explosion of Possibilities’, spoke to the array of opportunities for business development in speciality print. This was evident from the extensive line-up of product launches and enhancements introduced at the show. A total of 700 exhibitors filled six of Messe München’s halls, displaying a host of new equipment and colourful applications. EFI and Mimaki chose FESPA 2019 as the platform to debut their new flatbed printers, the Pro 30f and the JFX200-2513 EX respectively. Roll-to-roll printing was another key area of innovation, with Canon unveiling its latest system, the Océ Colorado 1650, while swissQprint launched Karibu, its first roll-to-roll printer. Durst instead introduced its own modular software solutions – Durst Workflow, Durst Analytics and Durst Smart Shop – to provide customers with an automated production unit ‘from pixel to output’. Kornit Digital displayed for the first time the Kornit Atlas, a heavy duty system created for super-industrial garment decoration businesses, and the Kornit Avalanche Poly Pro, featuring the company’s NeoPoly Technology, the industry’s first digital, industrial process for high-quality printing on polyester. Exhibitors such as Canon Europe and Dataline were satisfied with the strong volume of leads generated at the show.
FESPA Builds on Textile Heritage with New Sportswear Pro Event
designers, such as sustainability and automation. Michael Ryan, Event Manager for Sportswear Pro at FESPA, explains the rationale for this addition to the global FESPA event portfolio: “Our core FESPA community is heavily engaged in the production of sports apparel, with 80% of textile printers active in this dynamic segment, according to our 2018 FESPA Print Census. But what is clear is that, despite 7% growth in 2018, sportswear producers are not currently served by an event focused on how to optimise their processes and meet the global trends of customisation and speed to market.” “We believe that FESPA, having established a commanding position as a leading European exhibition for textile and garment printing including direct-to-garment, can deliver an event that informs, educate and inspires sportswear designers and manufacturers with the opportunities being enabled by technology and materials innovation,” Ryan added. With Southern Europe and North Africa being key regions for the design and production of fashion and textile goods, Feria de Madrid provides an ideal location for the first edition of Sportswear Pro, enabling
easy access for decision-makers from Spain, Portugal, France and countries such as Tunisia and Morocco. The Spanish capital is also readily accessible for visitors from other major garment manufacturing centres. The co-location of Sportswear Pro with FESPA Global Print Expo 2020 allows visitors to move seamlessly between the two events, taking advantage of the array of screen and digital printing exhibits within the FESPA textile halls, and also providing access to the Print Make Wear educational feature. This takes the form of a fast fashion factory, demonstrating a range of garment manufacturing technologies through guided tours, expert chats and catwalk displays. FESPA CEO Neil Felton concludes: “FESPA’s long heritage in screen and digital printing gives us deep roots in the garment production sector, while recent insights show clearly that sports and active wear is one of the most dynamic segments of this industry. We’re confident that the introduction of Sportswear Pro will add value to our established community, while supporting a wider audience to evolve their manufacturing businesses for a fast-changing market.”

FESPA is proud to announce the expansion of its textile portfolio with the launch of Sportswear Pro, a new exhibition dedicated exclusively to sportswear manufacturing. The first event will run alongside the flagship FESPA Global Print Expo 2020, from 24 to 27 March at Feria de Madrid, Spain. With a focus on the latest technologies in on-demand and customised sportswear production, Sportswear Pro will bring together suppliers of solutions for three key areas of sportswear manufacture: design (CAD/CAM and 3D body scanning); production (CMT [‘cut, make and trim’], bonding and knitting) and decoration (printing, engraving, embroidery and laser appliqué systems), as well as developers of accessories, smart textiles and printed electronics. Visitors to Sportswear Pro will be business decision-makers seeking the latest technological innovations as a means to streamline production processes, reduce inventory and waste, and enable on-demand and just-in-time production in response to shortening fashion cycles. In addition to the exhibition, the new event will feature a dedicated conference programme reflecting the business priorities of sportswear manufacturers and

Mimaki Tiger-1800B MkII Scoops Two EDP Awards at FESPA 2019
Mimaki celebrated winning two awards at the European Digital Press Association (EDP) Annual Awards ceremony, held at FESPA
2019. Mimaki’s Tiger-1800B MkII was the champion of the day, earning its first award in the category of ‘textile printer roll-to-roll more than 100 sqm/h’, and the second for its Rimslow TR Series complete solution, in the category of ‘preand postpress-treatment solutions’. As part of the Tiger Pro Series, the Tiger-1800B MkII is a high-volume textile printer for direct printing or paper transfer with a print speed of up to 385m2/h. This versatility and speed paired with the printer’s ability to print at up to 1200 x 1200 dpi, enables users to produce extremely high-quality products without the need to compromise on production and throughput. Capable of handling all kinds of fabrics and papers, the printer can be used for a wide range of applications including tapestries, interior decoration and fashion & apparel. Other important features of the Mimaki Tiger-1800B MkII include MAPS (Mimaki Advanced Pass System) and NRS (Nozzle Recovery System). MAPS prevents banding and colour-shifting during the printing process by spreading the edge of each pass to create a gradient. This feature alongside NRS, which enables the printer to replace damaged nozzles with operating nozzles without stopping production, enhances the printer’s performance and boosts produc-
tivity and quality for the user. “We’re delighted that our Tiger1800B MkII came first in two categories during such a prestigious awards ceremony,” says Bert Benckhuysen, Product Manager for Mimaki Europe. “To be recognised for the fact that we listen closely to the needs of the market and constantly work to improve our products for customers, affirms our position as a strong force within digital textile printing.” Allowing textile printers to take full control of their workflow, the Tiger 1800B MkII and the TR Series is a complete solution for coating, printing, steaming and washing machines. Rather than purchasing technology from different manufacturers to handle the four production processes, Mimaki ensures complete technology compatibility, for improved efficiencies and quality. “The Mimaki TR Series is all about increasing productivity and cutting costs throughout the whole digital textile printing process. Providing an entire workflow solution instead of a stand-alone product, enables us to offer a much more stable and reliable production line. This enables increased uptime and allows our customers to focus on designing products that make them stand out in the crowd,” Benckhuysen concluded.

Boosting Additive Know-How for Drupa 2020 From 16 to 26 June 2020, Düsseldorf will once again be the epicentre of the global printing, media and packaging industry. More than 250,000 visitors, 1,800 exhibitors and just as many journalists from over 180 countries will flock to drupa, the world's leading trade fair for the printing, media and packaging industry, to learn about the latest trends and technologies in the world of printing and packaging. Since drupa 2016, 3D printing has been one of the six highlights in the trade show program. In addition to its own exhibition area, drupa 2020 will once again dedicate a touchpoint 3D fab+print to this future technology. For the first time, the VDMA Additive Manufacturing Association will be responsible for the content design and implementation of the ten-day lecture programme. A total of 80 specialist lectures are planned, which will be spread over two two-hour blocks every day. With a view to the trade fair’s target group, the focus will be on applications in printing and paper machine construction as well as applications for media and packaging. The spectrum will range from additive-manufactured machine components to prototyping or on-demand spare parts supply for printing presses to the use of additive processes to manufacture individual advertising products and unusual packaging solutions. "Since our trade fair appearance at drupa 2016 met with a very positive response, it made sense to expand
our commitment at drupa 2020 and contribute our know-how," explains Dr. Markus Heering, Managing Director of the VDMA Additive Manufacturing Association and also the VDMA Printing and Paper Technology Association. n the five years of its existence, the working group has grown to around 150 members. These include leading suppliers of AM production technology for processing metals and plastics, suppliers of components, software, automation technology and materials as well as industrial users from various industries and leading research institutes. "Many of our members have been pioneers in industrial 3D printing for many years. They bring with them concentrated practical and theoretical knowhow that we want to show visitors at touchpoint 3D fab+print," says Heering.
MEPrinter June 2019
Rainer Gebhardt is the project leader of the working group and will be responsible for the content planning of the conference. "It is important for us to pick up the drupa visitors where they are in additive manufacturing," he says. For this reason, both introductory lectures on technical processes within additive process chains and insights into current and future applications in the printing, packaging and media industries are planned. "Additive design and manufacturing create scope for creativity in many industries. From this point of view, the technology also fits in perfectly with the drupa," stresses Gebhardt. Thanks to its broad membership spectrum, which includes traditional drupa exhibitors, users from many other industries and leading international researchers, the working group is able to offer the highest thematic diversity under its own steam. Gebhardt is also inviting drupa exhibitors to address the working group with their own lecture topics. "We are open to suggestions and will find opportunities in the ten-day program to provide a forum for AM applications from the traditional print and packaging industry," he emphasizes. A broad mix of topics is important to him so that the journey to Düsseldorf is worthwhile both for experts and for all those who are just beginning to get an idea of the potential of 3D printing in the printing and media industry.

Summa to Show Advanced Laser Cutter at ITMA 2019
MEPrinter June 2019
Summa nv, a leading supplier of high-end cutting, finishing and laser cutting solutions, is getting ready to showcase the high productivity the L1810 laser cutter can provide for a wide range of applications during ITMA 2019, at booth D154 in hall 3. The show takes place from the 20th until the 26th of June in Barcelona, Spain. The world of textiles is growing at full speed and is ready to embrace innovative solutions for efficient processing to meet today’s challenges within these industries. ITMA is positioned as one of the trendsetting textile and garment technology platform where the industry converges to explore effective solutions and collaborative partnerships for business growth. With Summa’s 1.8 m wide laser cutter, customers will be able to stay ahead of the game due to exceptional high productivity, while experiencing the benefits of camera recognition with auto correct, contactless cutting, perfectly sealed edges and protective mea-

sures for environment and safety. Summa is ready to showcase the many advantages laser cutting can provide with a focus on the sportswear market. Summa’s advanced camera recognition technology, called Vision, will ensure a considerable increase in the level of productivity and support high production runs. Therefore, the L1810 Vision is perfectly suitable to be used in high-production environments where fast processing of printed textiles is essential. The Vision system works by instantly scanning the material without operator intervention, and automatically creates a cut vector without the need for cut files. Then, the L1810 will proceed with its unique on-the-fly-cutting method. This means the laser will continue to cut, even when the conveyor is moving and feeding the material. Idle periods will thus be reduced to a minimum. Summa’s laser systems flawlessly meet the requirements of processing highly sensitive and easily
distorted textiles, which is specific to sportswear, with optimum accuracy. Delivering a precise cut for athletic, technical or fashion textiles in a high production environment is made possible by, among other things, the non-contact method and the motorized de-reeler. The motorized de-reeler makes sure there is no fabric distortion while cutting by creating a loop in the material. This relaxes the material, reduces distortion and secures an accurate cut. These features are brought to the L1810, thanks to the development by Summa’s laser division CadCam Technology, where years of experience and proven technology meet innovation. All of these advantages contribute to the high-quality standards which make the L1810 a best-of-breed laser cutting solution. Besides processing of textiles, the L1810 laser system is also perfectly suited to process all sorts of raw materials, used in the composite industry, such as carbon fibres, composites, thermoset and thermoplastics.

Heidelberg Focuses on Implementing its Digital Transformation
Following the successful end to financial year 2018/2019, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) aims to vigorously pursue its digital transformation. The company is to become less susceptible to economic fluctuations in the future, primarily due to the expansion of innovative digital business models and the higher proportion of recurring contract sales these will bring. Approximately 30 contracts were concluded in financial year 2018/2019 and customer demand is rising, which is why Heidelberg is continuing to expand its subscription offerings.
At present, customers are offered a fully inclusive package that combines equipment, services, software and consumables in one usage-based contract that runs over several years. In the future, customers will also be able to combine and utilize individual components from this offering over a defined period of time and in line with set standards. This will enable them to switch to usage-based service models in a phased process. In the medium term, approximately a third of overall sales and around two thirds of lifecycle sales at Heidelberg are to be generated on a
sustainable basis through contract business. Furthermore, Heidelberg is working on an industry platform that will offer print shops an automated, usage-based means of meeting their needs for software applications and consumables. Due to the ramp-up of the Heidelberg digital portfolio, primarily in the growing packaging segment, the number of installed systems will increase, thus generating considerable growth in stable, recurring sales of consumables, which will outstrip machine-only business. In China, for example, Heidelberg has, for the first time, joined with a leading packaging manufacturer to invest in a new online business model for designing, ordering, and printing custom folding cartons under the name ‘boxuni.’ “We are vigorously pursuing the Group’s reorganization. Thanks to the expansion of digital business models and the considerably higher share of recurring contract sales associated with these, we are going to get back onto a growth trajectory in the medium term and reduce our exposure to economic fluctuations,” explains Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer.

The Landa S10 is built to be a full production machine, 24/7. The colors are brilliant and vibrant - so intense and lively. I haven’t seen any other technology that comes close.” Specializing in packaging solutions for health care, beauty care and consumer brands, the Edelmann Group has operations in nine countries, spanning Europe, Asia, North and South America. Employing more than 3,000 people and with sales of over 300 million euros, Edelmann produces over 5.6 billion packages and leaflets per year. In meeting the environmental demands of some of the world’s most exacting blue-chip brands, sustainability initiatives are also a top priority for the company.
Speaking at the open house, Bruns also confirmed that partnering with Landa was the best decision for their business. “This is not just a supplier-customer relationship, it’s far more. I love the color from our S10, but crucially, the Landa technology allows us to get a good ROI and that’s just as essential. High speed and great efficiency enable us to earn money with the press,” said Bruns. Yishai Amir, CEO, Landa Digital Printing, commented, “We are obviously thrilled with the success of the Landa S10 at Edelmann, and we are looking forward to moving them out of beta within weeks. This success echoes our own business progress, on all fronts. With a continued ramp-up of production and go-to-market operations, we will have presses installed and printing across three continents by the end of 2019.”

S-RACE Tacky 100 is the very first microporous tacky paper and the fastest drying in the market. For the ‘live’ demonstration, Felix Schoeller will be supported by Monti Antonio with their single flat bed press Model 108. In addition to S-RACE Tacky 100, visitors can experience the complete portfolio of S-RACE papers for all kind of textile applications.
The product portfolio not only impresses with its advantages. At ITMA, S-RACE appears in a completely transformed brand look. “The focus of the new brand promise and design is our groundbreaking technology, which makes S-RACE the futureproof solution for printers and dealers”, as Martin Wöstemeyer, Senior Marketing Manager of the Felix Schoeller Group, explains. “By using our papers, printers will impress their clients with amazing results whilst enabling stable production and continuous quality. We can confidently promise: Made to impress.” Martin Wöstemeyer adds. In addition, a new naming structure was developed in line with the new brand appearance. All product names now reflect the key sublimation applications, allowing for easier orientation and differentiation within the S-RACE portfolio. For example, the product best suited for use in fashion and home decor printing, now goes by the name S-RACE Look 55.

World Anti-Counterfeiting Packaging Market to Top $4.0 Billion in 2024
The global market for brand protection, anti-counterfeiting and security packaging components is forecast to grow during the period 2019–24 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.4% to $4.0 billion. This reflects a situation where anti-counterfeiting remains an industry priority, but the focus of this battle is shifting away from the use of physical security features and anti- theft technologies – causing a challenge for the whole industry. • E-commerce outpacing overall retail sales growth - Glo-
balisation and e-commerce continue to grow at an astounding rate. By 2022 it is expected that close to 20% of retail trade will be conducted online or via mobile. • Counterfeiting moves from offline to online - As e-commerce continues to gain ground, counterfeiters are changing their hunting grounds as with a recent shift from selling counterfeits via marketplace sites, such as eBay or Taobao, to selling via social media sites such as Facebook. • Increased stakeholder collaboration - Brand owners do not wish to carry the burden of brand protection/IP infringement all by themselves. Consumer education shared resources and shared action with government authorities are increasing and will become even more effective in the coming years. • From optical to digital - The brand protection industry is moving away from optical security features that are identical for each item to digital features that allow consumers and authorities to inspect the authentic integrity of each item throughout its production and distribution life, and that allow brand owners to interact
with consumers (and vice versa). • Brand protection to IP protection - The landscape is shifting from brand protection conducted through product focused anti-counterfeiting features and security packaging, to intellectual property (IP) protection embodied in tracking, analysing and enforcing cases of online infringement. • Track and Trace - Track and trace technologies that enable a product’s status to be captured through the supply chain, and to retrospectively identify and verify its path; are the fastest growing area of this market. • Platforms technologies - In response to the broader definition of threats facing brand owners, suppliers are developing integrated platforms that allow brands to comprehensively address physical retail, supply-chain and online threats. • Holograms machine authentication - As the brand protection industry is moving from optical to digital authentication methods, and track-and-trace systems emphasise coded systems to create integrity in the supply chain, there is a market opportunity for holographic marks that can be authenticated automatically or via a smart device. • Alternatives to RFID and barcodes - Printed electronics systems use conductive, semi conductive, and/or dielectric ink to create a printed circuit board. There are a host of new applications enabled by printed electronics that were not previously viable using conventional electronics. • Consumer interaction - Brand owners regard smartphones as an essential medium to interact with their customers and is an increasingly important element both for law enforcement but especially for brands in the campaign against fake goods. There are significant differences exist depending on region, age group, education and income.
Barcode Label Market to Witness Robust Expansion From 2019 to 2029 Barcode labels are used for quick data storing and retrieving. Barcode labels include a representation of the company and product-related information in line and number format. They consist of small black parallel lines of varying widths and gaps which allow companies to obtain real-time data. Some barcode labels are comprised of numbers and pictures which increases their efficiency. Information regarding manufactures name, type of product, product number and price are included in barcode labels. Barcode labels prove useful when there is a need to increase performance, efficiency, and profitability across the supply chain. Barcode labels are used in different sectors like FMCG, healthcare, transportation, and banking. Barcode labels are also used in places like post offices, passport offices, airports, car and bicycle rental service providers, and colleges. Barcode labels help to extract accurate data of the product or services within microseconds; hence the driving force for using barcode labels is to reduce human error. The second major factor for using this technology is data security. Every organization want to encrypt their data with high level security which will not be easily traceable by the outsiders. It is very challenging to manage inventory location, and it's pricing at
mass level by the employee which might involve training. Companies can reduce training time and cost by using this system. Barcoding saves company time in terms of data re-entry. This also helps to trace outgoing shipments and equipment, and helps in optimizing the supply chain. Despite the positive outlook, few technologies might hamper the growth of barcode label market. dio Frequency Identifier (RFID) has an IC chip that stores and retrieves data. These IC chips have more capacity to store data compared to barcode labels. However, barcodes are more economical as compared to RFID technology. RFID consists of big programs which increase data recovering process time which is very less in barcode labels. Barcode labels work effectively on metals and water and the advance barcode technology also work in dust regions. On the reverse side, RFID does not function in such conditions. The collision of data happens when RFID is used for multiple code scanning at the same moment which is not possible in the case of barcode labels. The barcode labels market is continuously influenced by advancements in high-end technologies. Nowadays, user-friendly barcode label scanners are available in smartphones which increases convenience. The latest barcode in the form of Quick Response codes stores 100 times more information in smaller space and arranging data in 2 directional way. This consist of minimum error margin.

The medical packaging market is also witnessing a trend of trial packaging wherein the consumers are provided with a smaller dose to check if the medicine still suits them or not. The need for an efficient form of medical packaging also arises from various regulatory points laid by the FDA to be followed for manufacturing the packaging types. The global medical packaging market is expected to witness substantial growth over the forecast period which is attributed to rising healthcare expenditure by the regional governments all over the globe. Technological advancements, and excellent medical and healthcare
facilities are prompting the growth of the global medical packaging market. Use of packaging material that reduces the carbon footprint and are rendered as safe for the environment are gaining traction in the global medical packaging market. Environmental issues and the fluctuations in the prices of the resin add to the costing pressure among the manufacturers as they are not able to maintain constant profitability margins. These factors are expected to hamper the
growth of the global medical packaging market. The global medical packaging industry is also witnessing a trend of the on the go products to benefit the end users with the ease of packaging. Also, to provide the nurses and doctors with the ease of identifying the surgical kits, the manufactures have also introduced colour coded inner and outer labels which is expected to create significant opportunities for growth of the global medical packaging market. On the basis of geography, the global medical packaging market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa. North America is currently leading the global medical packaging market attributed to the well-established healthcare sector in the region. APAC region is expected to gain substantial share in the market revenue over the forecast period due to rising middle class population demanding for highly sterile forms of packaging. Europe is expected to witness moderate growth in the medical packaging market. Latin America and MEA region are expected to witness growth due to increasing pressure from the regulatory forces to improve the quality and functionality of the medical packaging.
Global Printed Signage Market to Return to Growth by 2024
and brand owners compete for this boom in sales. • Signage in retail environments: Changes in the structure and strategies of the retail industry will have a direct effect on market demand for printed signage. Increasing competition for brick-andmortar stores from online retailers has resulted in the traditional retail model changing to compete in the new shopping landscape. • Globalisation of brand identities: The ease of access to the internet in most parts of the world and the growth of social identities media mean that it is much simpler today to promote a brand globally. A prominent brand identity can open up new markets and be used to promote new product variants that are tailored to local preferences. Signage is an effective method of promoting brands throughout global markets. Striking signage placed in strategic locations will draw attention to the brand within a local setting, whether its objective is to maintain awareness of an established brand or introduce a new brand. • Technology advances: All
aspects of printing technologies continue to evolve and improve: printing processes. The key factors driving developments in all of these print processes are centred around reducing production costs through faster press set-up, and increased use of computer-controlled automation at all stages of the process, from taking the initial order to despatch to the customer when completed. With inkjet taking the largest share of printed area within the signage industry, this process is the focus of the majority of development activity, particularly for wide-format presses. • Web-to-print platforms for inkjet: Web-to-print platforms are changing the way that printers take and process orders, for inkjet enabling customers to place orders via the Internet that will flow directly to production and on to the despatch department on completion. The process is ideally aligned with digital print processes that print from a computer-generated image, saving time and costs for both the customer and the printer over the traditional process of initial briefings, artwork modification and final approval.

As it contains few organic compounds which have been considered harmful by researchers. Moreover, increasing use of roll-ons instead of deodorant sprays is also resulting in a decrease in demand for aerosol packaging.

With the wide range of applications, aerosol technology is gaining traction. Increasing demand for innovative products including hair spray and sun care products, the demand for aerosol cans is also rising. Being a hygienic, sustainable and efficient means of dispensing, the aerosol packaging is widely used across the brands. Moreover, they are also being made using recyclable aluminum or steel. Make your Direct Mail Campaigns Stand out from the Crowd! OKI Europe’s Shun Mochizuki, Senior Marketing Manager, Specialty Printers, explores why, when it comes to direct marketing, it’s not just what’s inside the envelope that counts! Despite speculation, print is either dead or dying. However, if you want your brand to stand out from the crowd, print is still the way to achieve this. Digital marketing trends have not eliminated print as some would have you believe. They have in fact instead nestled nicely alongside print marketing methods, spawning a highly effective approach to marketing that makes the best of both print and digital. With recent data protection regulations and the overload of email communications, direct mail is expected to make a comeback. This is great news for marketers as a study by TrueImpact reveals that 75% of people can recall a brand following a direct mail promotion compared to 44% following an online promotion. What’s more, Enthusem reports that 51% of prospective customers prefer a company to use a combination of mail and email.
It’s the envelope that counts!
The power of colour Colour has a powerful influence on the mind. Different colours convey different emotions. Red can provoke passion. Orange can convey energy. Yellow can elicit happiness. Blue can relate to trust. Marketers and designers have long understood the power of colour as one of their greatest tools. Single colour envelopes aren’t exactly anything new. To really stand out, businesses need to think about creating more unique designs that use more than one colour. Thoughts may then come down to costs and timelines. Adding colour and intricate designs means larger print volumes, higher costs and longer turnaround times. However, that is no longer the case. By investing in an envelope printer that can print colour-oncolour, print shops, small print houses and even print rooms within businesses, can run costeffective direct mail campaigns, with a real competitive advantage. Even more of an asset is a printer that can provide five colour printing on demand – a break from the norm of typical envelope printers.
Pushing the boundaries of creativity OKI’s Pro9000 Series Envelope Print System provides the unique benefit of adding white toner to traditional four colour printing, using OKI’s innovative digital
LED printing technology. The five colour (CMYK+W) device will push the limits of creativity to make your direct mail stand out with stunning white on colour as well as colour-on-colour output, producing brilliant, eye-catching full-colour images. This is especially impactful on dark-coloured envelope media. Traditionally printing on colour With Direct Mail – or in white involves lengthy and it’s the Envelope that counts! costly print processes often making it prohibitive for print shops and small print houses to offer this service to customers. Now with a minimum volume of just For more information visit www.envelope-printer.me a single personalised envelope, printing highly targeted direct mail pieces on demand is a viable option, enabling print houses to extend the range of services they can offer customers. Supporting standard and custom envelope sizes and different media types, the Pro9000 Series Envelope Print System opens up a diverse range of different formats and finishes. It’s not all about the envelopes. The extended capabilities of the Pro9000 Series Envelope Print System supports various substrates from plain paper to synthetic media, magnetic media, polyester, transparent film, heavier card stock (up to 360 gsm) and beyond. Short run card production, for greeting cards for example, has never traditionally been costeffective in businesses or print shops but the Pro9000 Series Envelope Printers finally makes this feasible, enabling affordable, on-demand short run printing that easily supports personalisation. Compact, affordable and easy to manage the Pro9000 Series Envelope Printers provides businesses and print shops with diverse and vibrant possibilities to create direct mail campaigns with impact. When it comes to direct mail, marketers, often focus on what’s inside the envelope. But how do you ensure your direct mailer gets opened? OKI’s Pro9000 Series Envelope Printer prints exceptional, eye-catching results using brilliant white and striking colour on colour, for direct mail with impact. With a minimum print volume of just one envelope, the only limit is your imagination.
MEPrinter June 2019
It’s usually considered that it’s what’s inside the envelope that matters, but in reality, this is the reason why important communications, sales and marketing collateral and other valuable content can be overlooked – the envelope that houses it simply doesn’t stand out and capture enough attention for the recipient to open it and it often ends up un-opened in the recycling bin. With an average of four direct mail items delivered through each household letterbox daily, standing out matters. If you want to ensure what’s inside the envelope truly makes an impact, you need to consider what kind of impression the envelope itself will have on the recipient. There’s little excitement to be
found in a pile of mail delivered in white and manila envelopes, but insert a vibrant colour or intricate design into the mix and suddenly you’ve got a piece of mail that stands out and entices the recipient to open it before the others.

Global Market for Label Printing will Reach $49.90 Billion in 2024
40
The global market for label printing has been growing steadily from 2014 to 2019, at rates of 4.8% in value and of 5.2% in volume (A4 prints). Smithers Pira’s latest market report ‘The Future of Label Printing to 2024‘ values the market to be worth $41.02 billion on volumes of 1.21 trillion A4 prints or equivalent in 2019. This is a 4% increase on the 2018 value of $39.46 billion, and up 5.5% on 2018 volumes of 1.15 trillion A4 prints or equivalent. The market will continue to increase up to 2024, at an annual average rate of 4.0% in value to $49.90 billion, and by 5.5% in volume to 1.59 trillion A4 prints or equivalent. The key trends for different labels are: • Pressure-sensitive labels will further increase their market
share as government regulations on tracking and barcoding requirements for medical and pharmaceutical products are implemented. • Wet-glue labels despite losing market share will see highgrowth in certain product niches in segments, such as the beer industry in Asia. • Multi-part tracking labels market position is being eroded by newer electronic tracking solutions increasingly favoured by the logistics industry, such as RFID technology. • In-mould labels have a small share of the label printing market, but demand is holding steady owing to a growing perception of their eco-friendliness. • Sleeve labels make up the largest share of the global sleeve
market at 90% of global volume and are expanding into new areas, including the labelling of beverage cans. This market report also takes a comprehensive look at print process trends in label printing. The most commonly used print process for labels in 2019 is flexography, used to print 403 billion A4 prints or equivalent with a value of $13.3 billion. However, with annual growth of 3.1% in value and 4.4% in volume over 2014–19, flexo is not keeping pace with overall market growth, primarily as a result of the rise of digital printing processes. Inkjet has been growing at a much faster rate since 2014, and will continue high growth overtaking electrophotography in volume before 2024.
Rigid Plastic Packaging Market to See Steady Growth
large extent affected by the trend towards convenience products. However, effects have to be considered in a differentiated way and are quite complex, said the report, titled ‘Rigid Plastic Packaging Market Report – World’. For example, microwavable packaging is mainly made of polypropylene. In the sector of ready-to-eat products (RTE), besides rigid containers made of polypropylene, packaging made of PET also profits significantly. The triumph of delivery services, however, causes the market for EPS meal trays to grow considerably. Squeeze bottles compete with more traditional packaging. Besides overall state regulations and economic development, the market for plastic containers is subject to a range of further influences. The beverage and food market in
particular, including the packaging structure, income development, and social trends, must be taken into account. Urbanisation and demographic change are accompanied with changing consumption patterns. In some segments, plastics are replacing traditional materials. At the same time, rigid plastic containers also face an increasing competition by bags and other flexible plastic packaging solutions. Further trends such as an increasing quota of women in the working environment, sustainability, bioplastics, lightweighting, and thin wall containers also have an impact on the individual application areas and product types and necessitate an intensive examination of the market mechanisms, added the study.
MEPrinter June 2019
Convenience products and delivery services are driving up the market for plastic packaging and the global demand for rigid plastic containers is expected to reach an annual volume of 62.6 million tonnes until 2025, according to a study by Ceresana, a leading market research company. Oliver Kutsch, chief executive officer, Ceresana, said, “Sales of highly processed foods, ready meals, and ready-to-eat meals are growing considerablyManufacturers are dealing with a complex market that is influenced by many different factors: new consumption patterns, product innovations, government regulations, but also, for example, substitution effects between individual plastics or packaging types.” The demand for rigid plastic containers for foodstuffs is to a
