Dubai unveils 3D printing strategy

4

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister and ruler of dubai, has launched the ‘Dubai 3D Printing Strategy’, a global initiative that aims to exploit technology for the service of humanity and promote the status of the UAE and Dubai as a leading hub of 3D printing technology by the year 2030. Sheikh Mohammed announced: "The UAE is presenting to the world the first integrated and comprehensive strategy to exploit 3D technology to serve humanity. We have also framed practical plans and precise goals to turn the strategy into reality, which will contribute to the progress and prosperity of the world and help preserve our human heritage." The key goal of the strategy is to ensure that 25% of buildings in Dubai are based on 3D printing technology by 2030. "The future will depend on 3D printing technologies in all aspects of our life, starting from houses we live in, the streets we use, the cars we drive, the clothes we wear and the food we eat. This technology will restructure economies and labour markets as the use of unskilled

labour will come down compared to the current situation, especially in the construction sector. It will redefine productivity because the time needed for 3D printing of buildings and products will be 10% of the time taken in traditional techniques. It will also help reduce manpower requirements as well as waste generated from construction which can be harmful to the environment.," he added. His Highness called on all government agencies, private sector companies, universities and research centres to work as a team to establish a universal model in the UAE that will serve as a platform for innovators in this futuristic technology from all over the world. There are three key sectors and five pillars of the strategy. The three major sectors are Construction, Medical Products, and Consumer Products. The construction and building sector will focus on lighting products, bases and foundations, construction joints, facilities and parks, buildings for humanitarian causes and mobile homes, in addition to galleries, stores and residential villas. The value of the 3D printing

technology based construction sector in Dubai is expected to be about AED3 billion by 2025. The use of 3D printing in Dubai’s construction sector will increase by 2% starting 2019 and more in the coming years, depending on the development of the technology and its future reliability. In the medical products sector, the focus will be on developing 3D printed teeth, bones, artificial organs and medical and surgical devices and hearing aids. The value of 3D printed medical products in Dubai is expected to be reach AED1.7 billion by 2025. The consumer products sector will focus on household items, optics, fashion jewellery, children's games and fast food. The volume of consumer products printed by 3D technology in Dubai is expected to be about AED2.8 billion by 2025. The strategy has five main pillars: Infrastructure, Legislative Structure, Funding, Talent and Market Demand. The Legislative Structure pillar will focus on the development of regulatory frameworks for the use of 3D printing technology within various sectors and the specifications of materials that will be allowed to be used in the printing process. The Infrastructure pillar will aim to provide the right infrastructure and the support of research and development to attract the world's largest companies in this field. Emphasis will be placed through the Talent pillar to build the local talent capabilities of researchers, designers and innovators, and bring the best minds from around the world in the 3D printing field. The Funding pillar will provide financing alternatives as well as investment support to develop the technology and expand its scope of application. The Market Demand pillar will promote the application of this technology within various sectors, to bring prices of products to competitive levels while maintaining quality.

The Dubai 3D Printing Strategy will be implemented by many partners, including Dubai Municipality, Dubai Health Authority and Dubai Holding. The strategy is aimed at integrating the efforts of government institutions and the private sector to enhance Dubai’s development by employing innovative local and global expertise in 3D technology. The Dubai Future Foundation will play a major role in organising these efforts and putting them within set frameworks to achieve the strategy. Dubai Municipality will be one of the important government agencies involved in the implementation of the strategy through the use of existing technologies locally and attracting the leading global companies in the industry. It will also analyse the optimal mechanisms to successfully transform traditional construction methods to construction using 3D printing technology. Dubai Municipality will achieve the strategic targets by launching and organising a number of projects and initiatives across four main stages. The Establishment Phase includes preparation of a comprehensive study for the 3D printing sector, especially in the field of building construction. It will contribute to the organisation of the registration process and qualification and licensing, implementation and follow-up monitoring and modification and legislation, as well as coordination with the customers, government, developers, manufacturers, and information

technology companies. The Qualification Phase aims to organise projects to develop codes for 3D printing materials, systems and specifications, hardware and technical standards of sustainability and project maintenance. In addition, this phase will adopt the registration and classification process and initiate measures to educate engineers and local and international companies. The phase will also see the preparation of laboratories for testing and measuring the materials. It also includes local and international accreditation and processing and preparation of cadres and electronic systems for operations and inspection. The third stage is the Implementation Phase, which will begin with the launch of the first pilot project with Dubai Holding. During this phase, developers will be inspired to work on other prototype projects while the private sector and consultants will be encouraged to adopt the processes of transformation towards printing buildings through a combination of direct impact incentives. The Development Phase includes assessment through several measures and performance indicators covering all the previous stages, and further developing them, drafting work agreements with key developers to facilitate the 3D printing technology sector. The Dubai Health Authority will help in achieving the goals of the strategy within the medical products sector by creating an

appropriate environment and setting the standards to apply to this technology in the medical sector, as well as to promote Dubai’s position as a global centre for 3D printed medical products, building international partnerships with key players around the world. Dubai Holding will also play a key role in implementing Dubai's strategic 3D printing through the launch of an innovative laboratory to embrace innovation, innovators and designers. It will establish a special centre for 3D printing and organise workshops and training courses. This is in addition to the establishment of a special fund to support pilot projects in a wide range of sectors, including 3D printing. The global market for 3D printing is expected to reach US$120 billion by 2020 and about US$300 billion by 2025. Reports indicate that 3D printing technology will cut construction costs by between 50% and 70%, and cut labour costs by 50% to 80%. In addition, the technology will help reduce waste produced in construction operations by up to 60%, which will reflect positively on the economic returns of the sector and contribute to sustainable development. North America, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and other developed countries have allocated huge budgets in the development of 3D printing techniques in various fields such as medicine, industry, automotive and aviation.

The key goal of the strategy is to ensure that 25% of buildings in Dubai are based on 3D printing technology by 2030

Coca-Cola reveals new "onebrand" packaging

Komori Europe will become the sole distributor of Screen GP’s Truepress Jet520HD

Mexico is first market to adopt graphics; additional markets to roll out throughout 2016 and 2017

Komori International Europe and Screen GP Europe have entered into a strategic business agreement to establish a collaborative structure between Komori Corporation and Screen GP, Screen Holding’s business operating company responsible for graphic arts business. Komori and Screen anticipate the agreement will provide a solid base for continuing development of the European printing industry,

in a similar way to the cooperative relationship introduced by the companies for the North American market in September 2015. The regional subsidiaries of both companies recently concluded a distribution agreement for the Belgian, French, German, Italian, Dutch and British markets. Komori Europe will become the sole distributor of Screen GP’s Truepress Jet520HD high-speed, roll type inkjet press in each of these areas. Concurrently, Screen GP Europe will use its extensive expertise in digital printing to provide comprehensive support for Komori Europe. By combining the expertise of Komori Europe and Screen GP Europe, both companies expect to grow their market share through increased digital and offset press sales. Further development of this arrangement is expected to contribute to continuing growth of the regional printing industry and enable the creation of a win-win relationship with customers. Kazunori Saitoh, director and manag-

ing operating officer, group general manager, Global Sales & Service Group of Komori Corporation, said: Following the collaboration agreement in North America in September 2015, this is a great opportunity for both Komori and Screen GP. But more importantly, we know our European customers will benefit from the combined expertise of our two companies.” Tsuneo Baba, president of Screen Graphic and Precision Solutions, said: “We have long believed that combining the technical and marketing capabilities of our two companies would provide an ideal approach to expanding our respective product shares within the printing industry. As a first step, in 2015, we created a formal collaborative relationship with Komori Corporation in the North American market and we now expand this established relationship to Europe. We are confident commercial printers will see the true value of a combined organization that is focused on their success.”

Fuji Xerox launches cross-media content creation service in Japan The service links paper catalogs to videos and websites using multifunction printers

Fuji Xerox has started providing a cross-media content creation service, the SkyDesk Media Switch Link Set Up Service for Multifunction Printer,

in Japan. Using the SkyDesk Media Switch Link Set Up Service for Multifunction Printer users can combine handy paper-based materials with contentrich, data-intensive digital media, such as videos and websites, to create interactive sales promotion tools with strong customer appeal. First, users scan hardcopy catalogs and leaflets with a multifunction printer, and then link those documents with videos describing the products on the catalogs or a web page to order the products by specifying the contents information on the control panel. Once this is done,

by capturing the scanned image on the catalogs and leaflets with a smartphone camera, users can bring up additional online information about the product and show it to customers during a presentation. Fuji Xerox has been providing a series of the SkyDesk services since 2011, to support small- and medium-sized enterprises in increasing the efficiency of their office communications and collaborations. The Company has announced it will continue to leverage its media-related technologies to provide customers with added value in the Document Services and Communications field.

In a move that will extend the Company’s “One Brand” global marketing strategy to packaging, Coca-Cola has announced the launch of new graphics that use one visual identity system featuring Coca-Cola Red as a unifying color across the trademark. The Red Disc, the signature element of the new “Taste the Feeling” global creative campaign launched in January, will now appear prominently on packaging. Further underscoring the Company’s commitment to provide choice, the new packaging is designed to enable consumers to choose the Coca-Cola that best suits their taste, lifestyle and diet. To clearly identify each product, the signature color is featured throughout the packs – black for Zero, silver for Light/Diet and green for Life. The new graphics will also include the unique product name and benefits on front of pack to help consumers make an informed choice: • Coca-Cola Original Taste (or Classic in select markets) • Coca-Cola Light/Diet: Crisp Taste, No Calories • Coca-Cola Zero: Zero Sugar • Coca-Cola Life: Less Sugar, With Stevia Leaf Extract “Packaging is our most visible and valuable asset,” said Marcos de

Quinto, Chief Marketing Officer, The Coca-Cola Company. “The Coca-Cola Red Disc has become a signature element of the brand, synonymous with great taste, uplift and refreshment. By applying it to our packaging in such a bold way, we are taking the next step towards full adoption of the “One Brand” strategy, uniting the Coca-Cola family under one visual identity and making it even easier for consumers to choose their Coca-Cola with or without calories, with or without caffeine.” New packaging will be available in stores in Mexico the first week of May. Similar versions of the Red Disc graphics will roll out into additional markets around the world throughout 2016 and into 2017. “The unification of the brands through design, marks the first time in our 130-year history that the iconic Coca-Cola visual identity has been shared across products in such a prominent way,” said James Sommerville, Vice President Global Design, The Coca-Cola Company. “When applied across packaging, retail, equipment and experiential, this new approach becomes a global design language that utilizes a historical brand icon to present the range of Coca-Cola products available today in a contemporary and simple way.”

Kodak’s Prosper business sale updates Q&A with Philip Cullimore, President of Kodak’s Enterprise Inkjet Systems Division and the Micro 3D Printing & Packaging Division What’re the updates on the Prosper sale process? We have talked to some potential buyers. These are confidential talks so I cannot discuss any particular company’s interest in buying Prosper. Why sell a business that’s growing and has significant market potential, according to Kodak? The Prosper business has significant potential for accelerated growth and the market opportunity will expand even further with the introduction of Ultrastream, a nextgeneration inkjet writing system. To achieve its full economic potential, Prosper will need to be leveraged by a company with a larger sales and distribution footprint in digital printing markets. The decision around Prosper is based on our scale in the inkjet

the technology in the hands of a company with a larger presence in digital print markets. What kind of buyers is Kodak approaching? Is there a specific timeline? We’re seeing interest from a number of suppliers in the industry, but a sale of this sort usually takes several months. We do not have a specific timeline. Who are the prospective buyers? We have received strategic interest in the Prosper business from companies and their financial representatives. These talks are confidential. market – with the investment in the core Prosper technology complete, and new and significantly larger markets opening up to us thanks to the Ultrastream breakthrough, it is time to place

HP commits to 100 percent renewable electricity

10

HP has pledged to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity usage in global operations. As part of this goal, HP is joining RE100, a global initiative of top businesses committed to 100 percent renewable electricity. Led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, RE100 works with companies like HP to help businesses transition to renewable energy sources and accelerate the transformation of the global energy market to a low carbon economy. As an important step to achieving this ambitious goal, HP plans to reach the 40 percent renewable electricity mark by 2020 in its global operations. This new goal reinforces HP's dedication to integrating sustainability into its core business strategy.

"Joining RE100 represents a significant milestone for our company as we continue to move toward a business that is powered entirely by renewable electricity," said Nate Hurst, HP's chief sustainability & social impact officer. "As we continue to reinvent a more sustainable business and society, both costeffective and low carbon sources of energy are essential to the future and the growth of HP's business. This commitment is guided by our belief in a world where technology and sustainability can combine to become a powerful force for innovation, helping reinvent how businesses, communities, and individuals can thrive." "We've worked closely with HP and the company's dedication to building sustainability into the business

is clear," said Amy Davidsen, executive director, North America at The Climate Group. "We welcome HP's leadership following the Conference of Parties on the UN Climate Change negotiations and its dedication toward driving forward the clean revolution." HP is applying a three-phase strategy to reach this goal: 1. Aggressively reduce energy consumption by optimizing operations/building efficiency and implementing new efficiency projects. 2. Increase the use of on-site renewable power. 3. Acquire or generate off-site renewable power to offset brown power emissions, including the use of renewable energy credits (RECs) and power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Egyptian Printing Day at drupa 2016

IPEX positioned as ‘Print in Action’ showcase

Nine sponsors of the event will organize special guided tours for Egyptian PSPs

The move back to the NEC is expected to attract a larger number of international visitors and exhibitors

Drupa 2016 will host the traditional Egyptian Printing Day on 2 June 2016 in Hall 7.1 on the first floor, with the attendance of representatives from the Egyptian printing, designing, prepress, advertising, packaging, and publishing industries.

Claus Bolza-Schünemann, chairman of the drupa advisory board and president of Koenig & Bauer Group, is scheduled to deliver the opening speech, after the welcome note by the Egyptian Printing Industries Chamber’s President Khaled Abdo. The Egyptian Printing Day is organized by the German Arab Chamber of Commerce in Egypt, the Drupa Administration, the Egyptian Printing Industries Chamber and Arab Print Media. Nine Egyptian companies are sponsoring this year’s Egyptian Day, including Integrated Office Systems, Xerox Egypt, Digi Pro, Kheiashy House, Texti, Youssef Allam, Sidhom, Al Hussein, and Delta. After the main event, a serious of special guided tours for Egyptian printers will be organized to the nine sponsors’ booths during the following three days.

Recently, two special pre-drupa events were organized in Egypt, in Cairo on the 9th of February, and in Alexandria on the 9th of March. Hundreds of printers attended both the events, where all the major manufacturers presented their latest products and technologies to be showcased at drupa. Dr. George Nubar, the acting dean of the Faculty of Applied Arts at Helwan University, and Walid Quorish, deputy manager of PETRA, the printing and advertising ETP of Egypt, commented that the Egyptian Day at drupa has always been a very important event for the Egyptian printing packaging and publishing industries since 2008, not only as a gathering place for all Egyptian printers at drupa but also a showcase of the strength of the Egyptian printing industry to the world.

IPEX 2017, which will take place at the NEC, Birmingham, from 31st October – 3rd November 2017, is being positioned by its organizers Informa Exhibitions as a premier ‘print in action’ showcase for the latest in professional production technology and applications. The move back to the NEC sees IPEX return to its roots at a central, easy-to-reach venue, which is expected to be popular with European and international visitors and exhibitors. Informa has switched the frequency of IPEX from four years to three to match drupa (2016) and IGAS (2018), fitting it between the two. The organizers have developed a new clear ‘all-inclusive’ package for exhibitors: the maximum stand size is limited to 500 sqm, and the price of exhibiting includes equipment lifting (on and

off), machinery mains connection and power consumption. "Our aim is to deliver an event for exhibitors and visitors alike that showcases the best in print which means that we want the full spectrum of print equipment in action on the show floor," says Rob Fisher, IPEX event director. "To facilitate this, we’ll support exhibitors by picking up some of the extra - and sometimes hidden - costs of exhibiting. To our

drupa cube to feature 60 keynotes, panel discussions and presentations

Boasting some 60 keynote speeches, panel discussions and presentations drupa cube, the event and congress destination at drupa 2016 (Hall 6, Stand D03) is abuzz with knowhow, inspiration and innovation. According to the organizers, the big difference between drupa cube and other industry congresses around the globe is its focus on visitor target groups from the print industry as

well as from the creative sector and from brand manufacturing and print buying. “If you want to master the current changes in the print industry, consistent change management is indispensable. This in turn only works out when you pursue a multi-disciplinary approach and look beyond your own backyard,” says Sabine Geldermann, Director of drupa, underlining the pioneering nature of drupa cube. “With The Medici Group, which is synonymous with “out-of-the-box” thinking, we have exactly the right partner by our side. We are delighted to announce that Frans Johannsson, founder and CEO of The Medici Group, will be delivering two keynote speeches – the opening keynote on the first trade fair day, 31 May, and a second keynote on 2 June (both between 11.00 am and 11.45 am).” British brand agency FreemanXP, headquartered in London, was commissioned with the strategic and creative design of the programme and the on-site

implementation. The English cube programme for the eleven trade show days is broken down into the following five areas: Keynotes, Business Evolution, Technology, Innovation@the Intersection and C-Level. The six sessions under the heading “Innovation@ the Intersection” take a very special approach. In these sessions, covering sector-specific subjects such as “The Role of Large Format”, “The Role of Packaging in the Customer Journey” or “3D Print: Hope or Hype?”, experts from The Medici Group venture a broader view and show how easily innovative approaches from other industries can be transferred to the print industry. The C-Level sessions address a clearly defined circle of participants from executive management level both on the exhibitors’ and visitors’ part. These C-Level sessions immediately follow the four keynotes and are designed as interactive workshops where strategic insider knowledge is shared.

There’s no longer a segregation of printing applications among print service providers worldwide. Commercial printing, quick printing, package printing, and signage are more intertwined than ever because of the advancements in digital printing. A great leveler, digital printing continues to open new markets and expand existing ones. Shortrun and variable data printing continue to evolve and change print communication, particularly in the publishing and marketing industries. But what is a short run and to what extent is short run printing

feasible? A short run is as small as 1 copy. When we analyze the short-run printing market, we observe the potential of variable data printing for personalization, print runs of up to 500 for on-demand books and self-publishing, and expansion of print runs of 500–2000 with roll-fed inkjet presses. At a print run of 2000, based on our analysis of machines, consumables, and paper at Rochester Institute of Technology, we’ve observed a crossover point where the effectiveness of digital printing declines and that of long-run, offset printing increases. This is a fact we must

accept, and this trend will not change until manufacturers reduce the costs of digital printers and consumables. The cost per unit in digital printing is based on the speed of the machine and the cost of consumables. At present, digital presses are getting faster and relatively inexpensive, and the consumables make money for the manufacturers. As the costs of presses and consumables go down, we will see digital printing go mainstream in the 2000– 10,000 print run market, probably with machines printing in the B2 size. For longer print runs, we still

Print is not dead! Its applications are only growing

In the old days, there was no other way to communicate without print. However, today, in a very competitive market, printing will play a role only if is relevant to this generation. To understand where printing is headed, we must find the right answer to the basic question of what is printing. I say printing is not a single concept, application, or industry, but it is a variety of things associated with different scenarios. Its applications can be grouped into 13 categories

– advertising and promotions, packaging, direct mail, technical documents, directories, catalogs, books, newspapers, periodicals, forms, stationery, financial reports, and others such as greeting cards. The biggest category, advertising and promotions, includes brochures, flyers, booklets, pamphlets, and other materials that are distributed to people. The reason the printing industry exists is so that someone can sell something to somebody else, and print service providers help produce the materials that describe products and services. From the very introduction of variable data printing technology, most people couldn’t understand why each printed paper or item needed to be different. Marketers are starting to realize that personalization is the key to engaging with consumers. Direct mail from retail stores in the US is a great example of how variable data printing is used to target specific customer groups according to their preferences. Sales go up when a message is personalized for every customer and conveys something that relates individually to them. Data analytics and data cleansing are crucial in the effectiveness of variable data printing. Packaging is the category attracting everybody’s attention and investment. Considering the increasing number of brands worldwide and demand for packaging customization for demographic segmentation, the market presents huge opportunities. The question for PSPs is what technology will they use for package printing and which specific part of the industry will they cater to – labels, folding carton, or flexible packaging. In the US, we call packaging the last 12 inches of a product’s marketing program, because after spending a fortune on advertising on TV, radio, newspapers and other channels, the marketing effort and budgets make sense only if the customer reaches out and selects the product in a store after noticing the packaging. How does printing technology contribute to this huge market?

Go to a supermarket and find packaging with the picture of a person on it. We can’t print halftones properly with flexography. However, digital is slowly overcoming such limitations. Imagine the burst of color and imagery possible with new developments in package printing. At drupa, expect to see technology that can print full color on plastics used in flexible packaging. At least 40 digital label printers will be showcased at the show. We hear the media reporting that print is dead. This misconception is due to the narrow view of printing in our society. The majority of people believe that printing is only related to books, magazines, and newspapers, and when they see how these media are going digital with e-books and websites, they start believing that printing has no future because demand for printed books is falling. Books form only 6–7% of all printing jobs worldwide, and a decline in book sales will not affect the printing industry significantly. The good news is that on-demand book printing has changed the landscape of the book publishing industry. The biggest growth in this on-demand printing market will come from photo books. Nowadays, people take thousands of photographs and store them on hard drives with terabytes of storage, but the photos are likely to get erased in the future. There is no guarantee that digital photos will be preserved. The only way people can keep their memories alive through

need offset printers, and because of its advantages, offset printing technology and processes will be used forever. So, we live in a world where digital competes with analog printing technology, but each of them has its own strengths and applications. Digital printing will have the upper hand as more PSPs realize how they can save money and get more features for their investment. Furthermore, the costs of maintaining offset presses have gone up significantly. The cruise ship I travelled in to Dubai and many others have replaced their offset printers with digital printers. What happens when a printer breaks down in the middle of an ocean? Such an environment demands reliability and durability above everything. Simultaneously, the market for offset plates is booming because they are being used for short-run printing, although they are not designed for it. Another great advantage of digital printing is that we can integrate folding, collating, saddle stitching, tape binding, and perfect binding inline. For offset printing, we need to move large sheets of paper from the printing to the cutting, folding, and binding stages, which still make it a manual process. As long as we have to move the paper from one place to another, the process is inefficient. The next generation of robotic systems needs to address the issue of handling large sheets.

photos is by printing them. Categories such as periodicals, newspapers, stationery, forms, greeting cards, and financial reports have suffered from falling revenues because they are being replaced by their electronic versions. As you analyze every category, you discover the stories and reasons behind the decline or growth in each printing market segment. There’ll always be a decline in certain segments, but the most interesting stories are those of growth, innovation, and new opportunities.

Technology is moving fast for us to keep up

Digital printing quality is no longer an issue. In many cases, most people cannot tell the difference between digital and offset printing quality. Technology has solved a lot of problems faced by printers, improving everything from resolution, speed, and sheet size, and sometimes the high resolutions we have today are not necessary. Toner based machines are now perfect for short runs, variable data printing, direct mail, and on-demand books. Powder dominates toner technology across the world. However, at drupa 2016, at least six major companies will in-

troduce liquid toner technology. While toner technology is growing gradually, inkjet technology is growing exponentially. Drupa 2008 was the ‘inkjet’ drupa. The 2012 edition started what I called ‘inkjet drupa on steroids’. drupa 2016 will take it to the next level with bigger, faster, and more capable machines. Inkjet technology has been around since the 1950s, and no company played a bigger role in its initial development than AB Dick Company, the American copier manufacturer and office supply company. The grandson of Albert Blake Dick, the founder of AB Dick Company, was making a fortune in the 1940s. He approached Stanford University with a proposition that he would fund any project that could invent the technology that would put him out of business. The university developed a technology that spat ink out of a nozzle onto paper with poor printing quality. The machine was called the Videojet. It took them a while to find a market for the machine. The first market they discovered was the beer industry for coding their labels. The second market was more interesting; Reader’s Digest became the first company in the world to use variable data printing to send mailers to their read-

ers. Since then, inkjet printing has been adopted by manufacturers and suppliers. It reached its peak in the 1990s when wide format inkjet was introduced along with color printing for inkjet. It was wide format inkjet technology that saved the printing industry in the US when they faced decline in printing volumes. It opened new markets for commercial printers not only for signage printing but also printing on oddly shaped and thick materials. A lot of companies that focused on toner based technology are shifting their attention to inkjet technology. Now we have different ‘flavors’ of inkjet – thermal, piezoelectric, and continuous, using aqueous, UV, and solvent inks. However, the problem with any ink is that it doesn’t print on all kinds of paper. I expect manufacturers at drupa 2016 to present solutions to the problems with ink and substrate compatibility. There are more printing technologies and processes today than in any other time in the history of the world. It’s difficult to deal with these fast advancements, and its gets harder to make decisions based on technology alone. As the quality and speed of inkjet technology improves, it penetrates new market segments.

What’s next?

The big question is where are the new markets? We understand graphic communications well and are beginning to understand package printing. Decorative printing and functional printing are new market segments that are evolving and we have much to learn. The future is digital with a mix of some offset, flexo, and gravure. Toner dominates in sheet-fed printers. Inkjet and liquid toner dominate roll-fed printers. Inkjet dominates flatbed printing too and is opening up a lot of new markets. 3D printing is gaining huge traction all over the world and there’s no about its big role in our future. One thing’s for certain about the future our industry: relentless change will continue.

Trends drupa Flashback in 1949 and Leipzig behind DDR-borders, it is necessary to restructure the country’s exhibition landscape as well. In May 1950, they officially announce Duesseldorf as the city to host the first ‘Internationale Messe Druck und Papier’ – a title that in practice is soon shortened to ‘Druck und Papier’, and then to ‘DRUPA’. That name is officially adopted in 1950 – in spite of the fact that only few at the table actually like the abbreviation very much, alternatives like ‘INDRUPA’ are discarded. A design contest brings the show its iconic logo, representing a printing tampon. It will be in use for the next 50 years, only to be replaced in the year 2000 by the ‘pixel’-logo.

Self-tying shoelaces and a self-drying jacket? Flying cars and hoverboards? Many of the unlikely predictions for the year 2015, made in the 1989 blockbuster movie Back to the Future II, proved incorrect. But it got at least one thing right: people are, indeed, still reading printed newspapers as we are about to celebrate 65 years of drupa (and totalling 225 Messe-days!). Gearing up towards this 16th edition, we invite you to get in that imaginary modified DeLorean, get it up to 88 miles per hour on

the Autobahn heading for Duesseldorf - and go way back to the future of print. “Drupa has been tried and tested – and has never failed to impress”, stated Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO of Messe Duesseldorf, two years ago. Putting the new slogan ‘Touch the Future’ to practice, he added: “And drupa 2016 will be no different.” Based on the events’ rich history, his forecast is very likely to come true. But back in 1949, it takes the founding fathers of drupa a lot of courage

to come up with this completely new concept: an international trade show for capital goods for the printing and paper industry, to be held in 1951. Only after signing up 527 exhibitors from 10 countries and welcoming over 300,000 visitors, they know they are on to something big.

The organizers aim to build upon the traditional BUGRA exhibition (short for ‘Buchgewerbe und Graphik’), held in Leipzig since 1914. With Germany partitioned

Change is in the air. Offset, already on the rise in the USA as run lengths get bigger and demand for colour is growing, is on display at various booths in 1951. Faber & Schleicher, for instance, demonstrates its latest

Speed up prepress

Only three years later, 1954, drupa stages its second edition for another 16 days at nearly double the size: 35,000 sqm. The introduction of the Hell Klischograph 151 is a success, as it enables printers to replace the time-consuming chemical-etching process and thus speed up prepress production. The same goes for the Linotype Quickset System, the first punched-tape controlled typesetter of its kind boasting a casting output of some 18,000 characters per hour. As a way of showing off the industries capabilities, the visiting Federal President Theodor Huess can see his photograph already in printed

form only some 30 minutes after it was taken.

Imaging instead of casting

As our DeLorean-time machine arrives in 1958, we see offset is clearly gaining more and more traction. The growing success of its Roland presses even convinces Offenbach-based factory Franken & Schleicher to change its name to ‘Roland Offsetmachinenfabrik Franken & Schleicher’. Meanwhile, at Heidelberg the offset technology is still being discussed ‘with a scepticism bordering on dismissal’. Photocomposition is well on its way to replace hot metal. Monotype has its Monophoto - a converted mechanical hot-metal machine that is now imaging instead of casting characters. Berthold shows a prototype of its Diatype in 1958. It is a desktop system for fast typesetting of headlines, using characters on a glass master disc. Hell launches its Colorgraph, a flatbed system able to scan, convert and correct original photos into color separations. Linotype further speeds things up. It has been working on its Linofilm phototypesetting machine, fitted with an electronic flash tube, since last drupa. After field tests at the Daily News in New York in 1956, the machine (‘consisting of a keyboard, automatic photocomposition unit and correction and assembly devises’) is presented in Düsseldorf,

In 1951, letterpress rules the industry. For the last century, both typesetting and printing have been industrialized rapidly, and drupa shows the way forward. Visitors can see five different Linotype models and also five Monotype-machines feeding lines of type to the multitude of presses that are on display from the factories like Koenig & Bauer, M.A.N., Frankenthal Albers & Cie and Heidelberg. The latter has no less than 19 presses running live at the show, including both its Automatic Platen letterpress and Cylinder press. Speed and automation are definitely the buzzwords in Duesseldorf – as they will continue to be for the next 65 years. German newspaper Die Zeit reviews the debut of the event as “an excellent achievement” – despite the “at first sight somewhat confusing combination of Print and Paper under one roof”.

offset presses at Hall 11: the single colour Roland Parva and the two colour Roland Ultra. (At home in Augsburg, M.A.N. is starting up construction of its first sheetfed offset press ‘Ultra M.A.N.’) Other inventions, that are bound to change the industry at some point in time, are also taking shape – almost simultaneously. For example in the USA, Xerox installs its first plane paper copier ‘914’. Siemens patents the first continuous-stream inkjet printer. And in the labs of Rudolf Hell (inventor of the Hellschreiber, a 1925-version of the fax machine), tests are running on the Klischograph; an electronically controlled engraver that scans a film to a print-ready stereotype (or ‘cliché’) in one go.

capable of outputting 43,000 characters on film per hour.

Letterpress converts to offset

Heidelberg makes up its mind: at the fourth edition of drupa, in 1962, it enters the offset market by presenting the KOR - a letterpress converted to offset. The Messe-halls, now covering 48,000 sqm, are filled with new offset presses from various manufacturers, including Wifag. Also, from Japan, Sakurai joins the trade show for the first time showing its flatbed letterpress, while Screen starts marketing its first electronic colour scanner. For the first lustrum edition of drupa, in 1967, two temporary halls are added to the fair, some five kilometres north from the actual exhibition centre. But even at 60,000 sqm, the show is sold out. Koenig & Bauer celebrates its 150 years anniversary and presents the new ‘Rapida’ series of sheetfed offset presses. And Hell’s Kombi-Chromagraph CT288 is able to combine several scans to put images and texts together on film.

even further. So, in 1972, drupa has some 100,000 sqm available – and sells out again. A major shift in the industry is taking place. The production of Linotype hot-metal machines in the USA has been discontinued in 1970. At the same time, Heidelberg introduces its GTO (‘Grosser Tiegel Offset’) press, while the Roland 800 is the first offset-press to have an integrated ink control system. For the first time in its history, drupa has more than 1,000 exhibitors in 1977. Prepress has gone electronic all the way – with Crosfield adding its minicomputer-controlled Magnascanner. Heidelberg launches its first Speedmasterpresses. UV-inks are introduced, and the first waterless printing offset-plates are on show. Also, the Compugraphic EditWriter 7500 is introduced: ‘a phototypesetter combining a keyboard and photo unit in one piece of equipment, enabling one job to be typeset while the operator simultaneously keyboards another.’ Meanwhile, in Israel, a man called Benny Landa founds a company by the name of ‘Indigo’ to work on perfecting liquid toner-technology. The 1982-edition of drupa – with half of exhibitors coming from outside Germany - sees further phototypesetting developments as, for example, Scangraphic launches its Scantext1000 system.

Digital show

“Drupa, drupa, international print-

ing and paper fair, we welcome you to Düsseldorf, Germany, to see what’s new in the graphics industry”. This first drupa-song marks the 1986 edition of the show, although it was already used in 1980 for the first time to promote the 1982-fair during the Print’80 show in Chicago. What’s really new is that further change is on its way: Apple has launched its first desktop computer (in 1984), and Adobe has started to develop PostScript. Linotype celebrates its 100th anniversary. At its 10th edition and 40th birthday, drupa 1990 is proclaimed the ‘digital show’. With some 25 running web offset presses in the drupa halls. Now covering a total of over 126,000 sqm, there is also room for, for example, AM’s liquid toner-based ElectroPress. As the fair takes place shortly after the Iron Curtain has come down in 1989, it also allows for talks between KBA and Planeta, and between M.A.N. and Vomag. Offset continues to raise the stakes, with Komori introducing the world’s first automatic plate change system, “perceived as a redundant luxury solution at that time”. Boosting our ‘Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor’-powered DeLorean five years on, it is all about improved productivity at the drupa 1995. Computer-to-plate (CtP), DI-presses and digital colour printing are all over the

place. While Indigo shows off its E-Print 1000 digital offset colour press, Xeikon demonstrates its DCP-1 dry-toner press. Apple is there to demonstrate prepress solution on its Power Mac-platform. Heidelberg has its Quickmaster-DI in place. MAN Roland protoypes the DICO-press. And press-manufacturer KBA is shows inkjet on a ‘hybrid’ offset web press, adding the capability to print a variety of cartoons on the front page of each and every newspaper.

From Gutenberg to Internet

The 600th birthday of Gutenberg marks the 2000-edition, celebrating 50 years of drupa. Full colour digital printing is now seriously taking on offset, with Xerox exhibiting at an entire hall its DocuColor system (and previewing its ‘FutureColor’ system), Heidelberg and Kodak jointly introducing NexPress, and Karat launching its Karat74 DI press. But not only printing is set to go digital – the entire production workflow becomes connected from prepress to afterpress through the industry standard CIP3, as shown in practise in Hall 6 by the PrintCity-consortium. Even Apple is taking part, as it decides to skip CeBIT and attend drupa

Touching the future

In 2012, Benny Landa takes inkjet to the next level by promising nanographic-printing for drupa 2016. Conventional press manufacturers like KBA and Heidelberg work on their own inkjet-devices, just like almost every digital press manufacturer does. As we accelerate towards an Industrie 4.0 era, speed and automation are once again the buzzwords in Duesseldorf during drupa 2016, together with efficiency, effectiveness, interactivity and multi-channel. And as we hum the new drupa song, rumour has it that a Back to the Future-sequel will be performed later this year as a musical at a London West End theatre.

New halls

One year after the fifth drupa, Duesseldorf decides to build a completely new exhibition centre – exactly on the spot where the temporary 1967-halls were – to allow its major trade fairs to grow

instead to lure back professional users. It previews OS-X. And there is this thing called ‘Internet’, that everybody is talking about. At drupa 2004, the Job Definition Format (JDF) becomes the symbol of the interconnected digital workflow in graphic production. While celebrating the 150th birthday of Ottmar Mergenthaler, inventor of the Linotype, the industry continues towards further digitization. In 2008, ever more digital printing is added to the list of exhibitors: Océ, Canon, Agfa, Ricoh and Konica Minolta have toner-technology in place, while Kodak, Screen and HP also start showing inkjet as the next big thing. As the show draws to end, news from San Francisco reaches Duesseldorf: Apple launches its iPhone 3G.

Insights APPPEXPO 2016

Which trade show really has the most brands and products? The many reasons APPPEXPO is worth a trip to Shanghai Dr Nicholas Hellmuth, FLAAR Reports I love to read the delirious PR releases of trade shows, saying they are biggest, best, etc. The most bizarre claim was that “90% of the booths at our show are nowhere else.” The trade show that used this as a PR release is one of the top three printer and signage expos in the world; so that PR release was unnecessary (because people should attend this expo no matter what: we go every year to publicize their nice exhibits). But the PR release was counter-productive because an expo, which is inherently good, should use its good name rather than having fluffy PR releases sully the brand.

36

We start the discussion with UVcured printers because, along with industrial printers (glass and ceramics) and along with textile printers, I must admit that UV-cured printers are my favorite. The best glass and ceramic printers do not use UV-cured ink; the professional glass and ceramic printers are in-line style and use special inks: one kind for glass and a slightly different range of formulas for ceramics. There were indeed actually glass and ceramic printers at APPPEXPO, but 99% of the brands, models,

and inks for wide-format sizes were for signage. Plus there were desktop and mid-sized UV-cured and some eco-solvent flatbeds for cell phone covers and other small plastic objects to be massproduced with decoration. Durst, SwissQprint, efi VUTEk, efi Matan, Dilli, Jetrix, Agfa were all present at APPPEXPO 2016 in Shanghai in early March. Their presence documents the international aspect of this trade show. In addition, the big Chinese brands were present: the brands that are known and respected

worldwide: RTZ Flora, Handtop, JHF (and JHF VISTA and JHF Leopard), Anhui LIYU, and many more. All together I counted over 80 UV-cured brands the first two days. Frankly, I am still counting to get the total (based on notes and snapshots). We publish Trends level FLAAR Reports, which list all brands and all models of UVcured, textile, and solvent printers at APPPEXPO. All together I found about 254 individual UV-cured printers (of the 80+ brands). This sets a world record for a single expo.

Solvent is not dead by any means, at least not at APPPEXPO, nor at SGI in Dubai. There were dozens, scores, of brands of solvent printers at the Shanghai expo (and more models than any printer expo in USA or Europe put together). Inks for these printers ran the entire range from ecosolvent through lite-solvent to full solvent.

Latex printers

Mimaki has dropped out of this market after two tries (two different ink sets). I would hope they

Water-based printers

ME‌Printer May 2016

ME‌Printer May 2016

Solvent-based printers

intend to try a third ink set, but no Mimaki latex was visible at Graphics of the Americas 2016 in Miami. I admire Ricoh for trying to sell their version of the same printer, but to sell one or two or three in USA is not competition for umpteen-thousand sold by HP (worldwide over 30,000). There has not been any more Chinese attempt to make a latex printer. The owner of a company which attempted to manufacture a latex printer said that there simply was not enough market opportunity in China. This may explain why the HP booth in Hall 3.1 had many water-based printers (a low-end version of the venerable HP Designjet 5000

and 5500, but for the low-price Chinese market) and only a few latex printers. Sepiax was nowhere to be seen or heard (as is typical). And no other ink company has dared to try to launch any innovative new ink (other than via PR release, such as several years ago; but none of these “incredible new inks” function adequately outside the R&D lab or outside the factory demo room). So HP does deserve compliments for being consistent in promoting and improving their latex ink concept. Next step will be a latex ink flatbed, though unless it uses a conveyor transport belt, pinchrollers over grit-rollers have failed to be acceptable in the world of UV-cured printers. Neolt effectively lost their entire UV printer division because they kept pretending that pinch-rollers over grit-rollers was a flatbed. We call these faux flatbeds (or fake flatbeds, or pretend flatbeds). To handle thick and flat material in a professional manner you need a dedicated flatbed printer (like Oce, RTZ Flora, etc) or a combo transport belt (like Durst, efi VUTEk, etc).

37

Insights APPPEXPO 2016 Eight years ago you could find a dozen brands of water-based Chinese printers. Half of them were knock-offs of an Encad. Indeed in these early years you could find entire booths filled 80% with water-based printer models. Nowadays it is rare to find more than five brands and at most they would have one, two, or three aging water-based printers. So HP is clever to stay in the water-based market with their HP Designjet printers specifically for the Chinese market. These were on exhibit in the HP booth at APPPEXPO; these models are almost never exhibited in the USA or Western Europe.

Textile printers

Hall Nh at APPPEXPO is beginning to become a textile focused hall. It had the booth of a successful textile magazine Fashion Print of Ms Shiny Gu and exhibits of textile applications. And of course, dye sublimation textile printers – both for home furnishings and for signage. In Halls 3.1 and 5.1 were scores of additional brands and models of textile printers. Most of the textile printers exhibited at APPPEXPO are existing solvent or traditional water-based printers adapted to be used with

in Europe and North America put together. In other words, if you missed APPPEXPO 2016, be sure to attend in March 2017. Since the overall expo was so large, we had no realistic manner of listing every category of traditional signage. But on the day before the expo opened, the FLAAR team of five walked through every hall, so we did get a chance to at least have an overview.

Improvements at the trade show in 2016 over 2015 dye sublimation ink and print onto transfer paper. But there are also many Chinese brands that manufacture their own printers specifically for direct-to-fabric printing such as SAER, Mingyang, and Century Star; all of these specific three companies are also major heating unit manufacturers. You can find many professional printers for the textile industry, and a handful of industrial type of textile printers.

T-shirt printers

A reasonable number of T-shirt printers could be found at APPPEXPO, of various sizes: single-

shirt, double-shirt, and multiple shirt sizes. But there were not many silk screen printers: mostly inkjet and toner for T-shirt. Although not many t-shirts printers exhibit at APPPEXPO, a lot of local heating unit manufacturers are present, such as LOPO, Everbright, and Microtec.

Calenders and heating units

Some of the major international calender brands exhibit at APPPEXPO, and the ones that don’t exhibit here are still present in the booths of textile printers. Many Chinese-made calenders and heating unit brands can be found at the show: EastSign, Pengda, Century Star, SAER, Mingyang, Fulei, etc.

Laminators and flatbed applicators

About 90% of the laminators sold in the USA, Europe, and Middle East are made in China. Kala is hopefully made in France. You can find perhaps a dozen brands of laminators at APPPEXPO. They vary from low-end to cheap. It is a challenge to find one that could compete with those made ten years ago in the USA, but at their low price, people take the risk. Most are wide-format size rather than being grand-format size. At grand-format size (3.2m and above) the risk of defects,

shoddy workmanship, and weak components rises to the point it is better to think of only the really good brands. Flatbed applicators are made in Scandinavia, and elsewhere in Europe. One brand is made in South Africa. Flatbed applicators have not yet been copied very much in China. Yes, one or two brands, but at trade shows in Europe or USA you only see the non-Chinese brands of flatbed applicators. Coaters are different from laminators. Coating provides an aesthetic appearance which you select. A coating does not automatically provide scratch protection and especially no anti-sun protection. After Drytec dropped out of this market, there are not many coaters at expos anywhere. At the most there are one or two coaters, and they are hard to find. There is no one brand in Asia that stands out.

Cutters and trimmers

Anything and everything for finishing workflow (trimming and cutting) can be found at APPPEXPO. In addition, the top European brands are present: from A to Z (Aristo to Zünd). We found CNC Routers; C02 laser cutters; plasma cutters (rarely seen at signage expos in the USA or Western Europe); upright cutters (the USA brands are usually of triangular shape, 2m high);

Chinese copies of the nice Italian FOTOBA cutter (roll-fed) trimmers: knife slicers to put on top of a table top; and cheap entry-level vinyl cutters.

Traditional signage

APPPEXPO probably had 100% more traditional signage products than all printer-signage expos in Europe put together! I would not be surprised if APPPEXPO had 100% more traditional signage products than all wide-format inkjet signage expos

The heating system in the halls was a dramatic improvement. At the corners of the hall where doorways opened to the outside, it was rather cool. But smart booth managers brought floorlevel fan-heaters. The Sam Ink booth was at a door-open corner but with three fan-heaters it was so nice that I used the table for my office several days. For the 2017 edition, there will be more restaurants open inside the trade show complex; people had trouble finding restaurants to eat lunch. Our FLAAR team simply brings Granola bars, cookies,

Insights APPPEXPO 2016

and comparable snacks, so we can eat while we are walking the aisles taking notes on printer and signage products. We found a hotel within 10 minutes drive of the new expo center. Hopefully there will be new hotels built nearby for 2017.

ME‌Printer May 2016

Shanghai as a destination is worth the entire trip

40

China in general and Shanghai in particular is one of my favorite places to visit (although I admit it is more practical for shopping in the Dubai malls in the UAE). But nonetheless, you can still go shopping in Shanghai. But the river cruise (in the evening, to see the illuminated buildings) is the most remarkable river cruise I have taken anywhere else in the world. Another benefit of coming to APPPEXPO is that if you are clever, you can also visit the factories where the products you need are actually manufactured. I have been attending APPPEXPO for many years. I have also attended Ceramics China but this year Tecnargilla in Italy is the best ceramic printer show in the world. I have also attended Chinese glass shows. Sadly the one in Beijing was poorly organized and a waste of time. In distinction,

Glasstec, well organized by Messe Düsseldorf GmbH, is by far the absolute best place in the world to learn about inks and printers for glass. For printable inkjet media and substrates, and especially for UV-cured, solvent printers, CNC routers, and CO2 laser engravers, it is essential to attend APPPEXPO 2017 in Shanghai. We also found plenty of brands of textile printers at APPPEXPO.

A final reason to consider attending APPPEXPO: tons of options for media

Probably over 60% of the printable media and substrates sold in Europe and North America and the Middle East are made in China. Some nice printable materials are also made in Korea. APPPEXPO probably has exhibits of 95% of the major media and substrate factories and major local distributors of China. If you are clever, before or after APPPEXPO you can also visit the actual media factory. We of FLAAR have been to the factory of ARIA (Yeong Jeou) and another company’s factory a block away, of Guangdong GLM Digital technology Co, Ltd. (Globally Loved Media). These two brands have the experience, knowledge,

and factory equipment capability to produce good media. More importantly, these two separate companies are examples of companies in China realizing that trying to produce low-bid products is self-defeating. Just look at the UV-cured and solvent printer brands which rose high and then lost most of their distributors around the world since their printer products were not good enough to hold up to actual use out in the real world. Once your company loses its distributors, then distributors (and print shop owners) jump to better brands. So ARIA and GLM are examples of brands that do not want to fall into the “low-bid junk” kind of manufacturing. They prefer to make good media and earn the respect of the distributors and end-users around the world. We at FLAAR look forward to visiting other factories and finding other brands, of inks, of media, printers, laminators, and flatbed cutters, who wish to build a corporate reputation for reasonable quality at a reasonable price (but still a lower price than products produced in other countries). I will not attend Drupa 2016 because I have already attended Drupa 2000 (incredible), Drupa 2004 (amazing), Drupa 2008 (useful) and Drupa 2012 (not what it used to be). I prefer the compactness of FESPA (this means that everything is where you expect it). Trade shows which splitter splatter wideformat printers, inks, and media into too many unrelated halls simply waste your time. At APPPEXPO 90% of the cutters are in one hall; 80% of the media and substrates are in Halls 4.1 and 3.1; 95% of the UV-cured printers are in Halls Nh, 3.1, and 5.1. In other words, not only is APPPEXPO umpteen times larger than any and every other expo (especially for UV-cured printers, solvent printers, media and substrates, CNC routers), but APPPEXPO has products organized in a manner which is easier for the attendee.
