WARM WELCOME TO UK’S NEW SHIPPING MINISTER Seawork and M&CCE Expo are delighted to welcome Kelly Tolhurst as the new UK Maritime Minister. Ms Tolhurst was appointed a Member of Parliament (MP) for Rochester and Strood in the May 2015 general election. Her new maritime role is understood to encompass both shipping and ports, including overseeing the project to create up to 10 new ‘Freeports’ for which a 10-week government consultation period has just been launched. Kelly is no stranger to the marine industry having, in her words, “grown up around my dad’s boatbuilding business” and gone on to be a marine surveyor and director of a UK marine and industrial coatings company. Maritime organisations have widely welcomed the appointment, including the British Ports Association chief executive Richard Ballantyne who said “Now is a pivotal time to take on the brief of maritime minister, with the current consultation on Freeports. Post-Brexit tradefacilitation is also high on the agenda, as well as sustainability and port connectivity.” Andrew Webster, CEO of Mercator Media, comments “We enjoyed an excellent relationship with the previous Maritime Minister who attended the exhibition twice to meet with key leaders in the commercial marine industry and to offer important insights into the Government’s

8 WorkFloat on the move
Toby Budd, founder and Managing Director of UK company, WorkFloat was delighted to win the overall ‘Spirit of Innovation’ Award at the 2019 European Commercial Marine Awards (ECMAs), sponsored by A-Plan Marine Insurance. WorkFloat 'folds' so it can be towed behind a 4x4 on the road or slide into a standard shipping container. Once afloat the 8m x 5m 'mini multicat' can lift, pull and carry an impressive deadweight and has a wide range of commercial applications. Seawork news team caught up with Toby Budd after all the excitement of winning the Award...

My investors Jack Gifford, the Naval Architect and Danny, the fabricator 8 How has the industry received WorkFloat? It could not have been better, we are involved in a UK demo tour to show people WorkFloat in action 8 What’s next for your company? The big UK demo tour, and then shortly after sales and we move into production on both models. 8 Will you be entering the 2020 European Commercial Marine Awards? Yes, we have a new modular pontoon system we have just filed a patent on. It has structure built into it and a tough wooden deck. As well as being modular and extremely versatile it is also very competitively priced. We will be bringing both products to Seawork and have booked a large on-water berth. We are looking forward to officially launching the new pontoon system at the exhibition.
Life after winning the Young Person’s Development award Eighteen-year old Lauren Hounsome won the Young Person’s Development award. She is now a BP engineering cadet, studying at South Shields Marine School. Lauren is well into her foundation degree but found time to give us an update on her progress… “I am in phase one of my degree and am just about to go off to sea at the end of January. My first ship is a crude oil tanker. It’s currently in America but I have been asked to get an Australian visa. I will be at sea for four months.”
‘‘
We were impressed with Lauren’s dedication and commitment to developing both her career and education within the maritime industry Lauren’s role on board will be as engineer cadet and she “will help out with the “nitty gritty” jobs – cleaning, servicing, working with the second engineer.” Her training at college is giving her the basic knowledge required to be able to go to sea with much of her time spent
being taught the engineering background so that she can then apply it when at sea. Lauren’s second sea phase will be for nine months, all part of her three-year course. Lauren tells us that her course is rated as one of the “most difficult foundation degrees in the UK” and she ruefully admits that “it’s definitely lived up to it”. But Lauren also says she is loving it and would recommend it to anyone. Happily, Lauren is back in time for Seawork and will be joining us for this year’s Award ceremony.
LAURA’S PRIZE OF £850 BOUGHT… A new “Mac” laptop to help with her many assignments and paying for her accommodation bond at college. Laura says “it definitely helped towards my future career. It relieved the stress a little; it’s a very stressful time moving away from family to go and study.”
ENTERING THE AWARD 8 Any young person, aged 16 – 25, currently studying for, or beginning, a career in the Maritime Industry can enter. Entry is by short informal video, between 1 minute and 3 minutes long accompanied by a written paragraph on how the bursary will be spent and how it would help to further the Young Person’s career. Applications can be completed online at www.seawork.com/ypda.

previous year. 600 were for civil engineering degree-level programmes. ‘Earn while you learn’ apprenticeship models offered across the UK essentially all involve 80% workplace and 20% off-the-job training, the latter usually provided by a college or a university. This mix provides the apprentice with opportunities to apply learning, work on live projects and to share problems and experiences with peers and more experienced colleagues The arrangement suits the employer too,

CILT(UK) in new partnership with M&CCE Expo The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT(UK)) is to partner with M&CCE Expo (Marine & Coastal Civil Engineering Expo) which will be held 9-11 June 2020 in Southampton UK. CILT(UK) is the membership organisation for professionals leading supply chain operations for the movement of goods and people. First established in 1919, CILT in the UK is a registered charity and part of the CILT international family with over 33,000 members in countries across the world. Members of the Institute are involved in the management and design of infrastructure, systems, processes and information flows, and in the creation, management and continuous improvement of effective organisations. CILT’s Ports, Maritime and Waterways Forum (PMW Forum) aims to cover the
interests of all those involved in waterborne transport both domestically and internationally. Whilst being three very different areas within logistics, Ports, Maritime and Waterways are all vital elements of the supply chain; often overlooked in general logistics, without them most supply chains would not function. The PMW Forum looks at the holistic overview of how these sectors operate and interact with each other; including freight, trade, port, operations, passenger, cruise terminals and safety matters. M&CCE Expo is an opportunity for a company to reach a highly targeted audience of Marine and Coastal Civil Engineering buyers and influencers with direct access to the marine and coastal civil engineering market, its innovations and people. As a mark of support for the new partnership, M&CCE Expo is offering a preferential rate to CILT(UK) Corporate Members interested in exhibiting alongside the Institute. Bringing real-time 3D Data above the waterline
Focussing on critical above-water, short range construction market applications where imaging and placing objects can be as critical as underwater, Coda Octopus has announced the initial release of its new Echoscope® AIR camera. The Echoscope® AIR above the waterline capabilities add to placement accuracy and efficiency for operators and project construction teams; giving users an extra level of scene awareness to ensure inspection and monitoring tasks are completed safely and efficiently. The Echoscope® AIR real-time 3D imaging applications above the waterline complement the use of Echoscope® real-time 3D imaging sonars underwater. Providing the
same real-time volumetric 3D data as the Echoscope allows seamless use of Coda Octopus’ powerful real-time and post-processing software applications (Underwater Survey Explorer and CMS) which have been in use in the construction industry for well over a decade. The initial focus for Echoscope® AIR is to provide new benefits for a number of key marine construction applications including: 5 Breakwater Construction: The Echoscope® AIR can visualize the movement and track blocks above waterline for the first time. The Echoscope® AIR fully integrated within the CodaOctopus® Construction Monitoring Software (CMS) and is directly interchangeable for the Echoscope. The transition for placement of blocks from below the waterline to above the waterline is seamless and intuitive for even the most inexperienced crane operator. 5 Port, Harbour, and Bridge Inspection: The Echoscope® AIR is also supported in the Underwater Survey Explorer (USE) software allowing short range above water inspection tasks to be executed with the same ease as currently performed with Echoscope underwater. Deliverables from the Echoscope and the AIR can be combined in top end software Underwater Survey Explorer (“commonly referred to as “USE”) for consolidated data output to clients.

EXPOBRIEFS Smoothing the exhibition pathway
SEEKING ATTENTION – BREAKING NEWS Seawork is the place to break news in the commercial marine industry – new plant, equipment or services, demonstrations and press announcements. The event attracts an audience of over 7,700 influential commercial marine professionals so exhibitors are urged not to miss out on the opportunity to maximise their presence at Seawork. The easy to access, online Exhibitor manual makes it simple for attending companies and
organisations to upload details of their profile-raising events at Seawork. This enables the press office team to compile a comprehensive media diary which will be promoted across all of the Seawork media channels. For further information on exhibiting and the online manual call +44 1329 825 335 or email info@seawork.com For press office enquiries +44 1329 825 335 or e-mail press@seawork.com
New caterers build up exhibitors The new catering company for Seawork and M&CCE Expo, Plyvine certainly knows how to reach an exhibitor’s heart. On Monday 8 June, the busiest build-up day for the exhibition, it’s offering heavily discounted food and hot drinks for exhibitors and contractors in the Golden Arrow Marine restaurant on the waterfront. The official caterers for 2020 will be running the Golden Arrow Marine Restaurant, offering sandwiches and light snacks in the Pacific Restaurant and opening the Guinness Bar for business in the Atlantic Hall. Plyvine was started in 1980 and has many years of experience in the event catering industry. It’s proud of its trained, uniformed staff, attention to
detail and use of finest, fresh ingredients. Other popular, independent hot food and vegan caterers will be available in the food court.
Organisers strive to make Seawork and M&CCE Expo two of the easiest exhibitions to attend with an easy to access online Exhibitor manual. Following feedback some useful amendments have been made to this year’s manual, making it easier to access information, navigate, complete and upload essential information. Exhibitors will find a wealth of information online including clear descriptions of their stand and services, Health and Safety forms and guidance on completion, a helpful timeline for completion and submission of required forms and an overview of all exhibition services. A new development for 2020 is the ability for exhibitors to choose and book preferred time slots for build-up and break down, and to print passes. A new software system, Voyage Control, has made this possible, another step in easing potentially stressful times for exhibitors.
Be part of the story Seawork and M&CCE Expo attracts world-wide attention across all media platforms. News and updates are broadcast via the websites, social media channels and eNews, now reaching the inboxes of up to 38,000 of commercial marine professionals. Over 31,300 printed copies of this Seawork and M&CCE Expo news will be distributed, with the Summer Show News hitting desks just before Seawork itself. This free service is available to all exhibitors. Send copy and images to press@seawork.com

SPEEDBRIEFS
RAMCO SHOWCASE EX-MOD RHIBS
Expert joins panel Focussing on design, power plant, people and equipment, the Speed@Seawork lunchtime session will feature a panel of experts from the Fast Ops field. Military Systems Integrator Will Smith who runs Ambex Limited is the first of the experts to be announced.
Will began his career working in the military maritime domain in 1993 as a systems’ engineer, principally involved in the installation and support of navigation, communications and surveillance equipment aboard a fleet of law enforcement vessels, as well as for the Royal Navy. Latterly, his skills and experience have expanded sufficiently to allow him to provide expert consultancy on a variety of military systems and also expert witness testimony in maritime law enforcement cases. Ambex is a key provider of integrated Nav Comms and Surveillance systems including in-service support to the UK MoD via BAE Systems and Atlas Elektronik UK Limited. Ambex also owns and operates a pair of 16 metre tests and trials vessels including a 50 knot very slender vessel (VSV).
Ramco, one of the UK’s largest outlets for quality, used equipment, will be showcasing a selection of Pacific 22 rigid hulled inflatable boats (RHIB’s) at Seawork.
The vessels, manufactured in the UK by Halmatic and designed to withstand the toughest of sea conditions, were deployed by the MoD for a diverse range of operations all around the world including
logistics, counter piracy/narcotics, defence and rescue missions. The Pacific 22 RHIB’s became surplus to requirement when the MoD replaced them with newer models as part of a recent equipment update initiative; implemented to ensure that equipment meets the expanding demands of the MoD’s military operations. Ramco’s solution provides the MoD with a compliant and cost-effective service that extends the product lifecycle of equipment, reduces waste and promotes the reuse of surplus assets in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. It also allows buyers within the commercial marine and workboat markets to purchase competitively priced, quality vessels from a credible, military provenance. Ramco undertakes a thorough refurbishment of each vessel although the surplus vessels have been well maintained during their deployment and are already in great condition.
A FUTURE IN FOILS A highly innovative company based in Lorient (France) is looking for European industrial partners to make an ambitious project a reality. SEAir recently signed a contract with DGA and AID (French Innovation Defence Agency) to finalise a new Flying boat prototype, especially designed for the French Special Forces. With four European nations asking for more details, this project could become the flying boat for the European Special Forces. With a strong Design and R&D office, SEAir states it can make any boat ‘fly’. The company is able to adapt any hull to accommodate a foiling system (foils, activors, sensors…), and designs foils (carbon composite, steel, aluminium…) to create new prototypes. The SEAir team designs new proven hydro foiling systems in-house and the company’s expert technicians fit the foils at the workshops. Foiling systems are able to improve operational capacity; SEAir’s foiling system enables increased average speeds in rough seas, better seakeeping and reduces fuel consumption thereby increasing operating range. Enhanced stability reduces the
incidence of injuries and fatigue. Compared with a standard RIB, reduced noise, reduced turbulence, reduced slamming and spray all contribute to significant improvements in crew safety and welfare. SEAir has already received numerous awards, including three world firsts and has 15 patented systems, including the first foiling RIB. Recent deliveries include the new Beneteau (10m – 5t) with four foils and the Sillinger 7.65 m boat, which has integrated intuitive control systems and are able to beach, to dock, due to retractable/folding and servocontrolled foils. 8 SEAir will show the Sillinger 7.65m boat at this year’s edition of Speed@Seawork 8 June 2020
