COMMERCIAL MARINE & WORKBOAT EXHIBITION & CONFERENCE • Mayflower Park, Southampton • 11-13 June 2019
Minister returns
GROUND BREAKING DEBUT Goodchild Marine Services Limited will hand over Leader, the UK’s first hybrid pilot boat to the Port of London Authority (PLA) at Seawork 2019. The ORC 136, a parallel hybrid pilot boat, is truly ground-breaking, combining both diesel and electric power and designed to be completely emission free when operating in electric mode, paving the way for dynamic improvements to the carbon footprint of cutters. Marine and Industrial Transmissions Limited (MIT) and its manufacturing and technology partners, Transfluid are partners in the project, providing the plug-in hybrid system, alongside E P Barrus, suppliers of the Yanmar engines. The order was placed as part of PLA’s commitment to promoting the adoption of new, green technology in the recently published Air Quality Strategy for the Tidal Thames, the first of its kind for any UK port. The strategy aims to reduce river-based air pollution, while also facilitating future growth of waterborne freight and passenger transport. Goodchild Marine’s flagship ORC range is
renowned for its unique beak bow hull design, making it lighter and more capable of higher speeds. Expected to reach up to 15 knots under hybrid power, Leader went into build at the family-run yard in June 2018 and is set to be used by the PLA for the transfer of pilots to and from vessels in Gravesend Reach. Alan Goodchild, Managing Director, said, “Our boats are always built with the future in mind, both in strength and with advancing technology, making them able to withstand the most challenging conditions. The unmatched allweather capability and the fuel efficiency is second to none due to the light hull shape, giving it minimal drag. PLA director of marine operations, Peter Steen, said, “We’ve now seen Leader in the water and ready for sea trials. She’s a very capable boat, set to make a radical difference to the environmental performance of our operations.” Leader can be seen on berth VB31 with Goodchild Marine Services Limited, now in its 41st year of business, on stand PB38.
Nusrat Ghani, UK Minister responsible for Maritime, Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Maritime Security, Skills and Apprenticeships and the Year of Engineering, is to return to Seawork on the opening day of the exhibition, Tuesday 11 June 2019. Ms Ghani will open Seawork and the Marine & Coastal Civil Engineering Expo with a key note speech to visitors and exhibitors, followed by a tour of both exhibitions which are now colocated in Southampton’s Mayflower Park. Actively involved in the Maritime 2050 strategy, with a particular focus on diversity in the marine industry, the minister announced new funding in March to encourage more young women to embark on a career at sea. Last year she opened the first meeting of the Clean Maritime Council, which will devise a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality on and around our waterways, ports and shipping lanes. The size and breadth of Seawork and the Marine & Coastal Civil Engineering Expo will enable Ms Ghani to reach out to a broad representation of the commercial marine sector and will also give exhibitors and visitors the opportunity to interact again with a member of the government.

Dedicated to solutions for marine, coastal and other challenging civil engineering projects
BOSKALIS BRING THE “ESCAPE” CRAZE TO EXPO Headline sponsor, Boskalis will be offering those attending the Marine and Coastal Civil Engineering Expo the chance to experience an “Escape” room with a difference. Fittingly, the leading global dredging and marine services contractor has set up the room in an old shipping container, with a marine and dredging theme. The container will come to M&CCE Expo direct from the Netherlands where it has proved a huge hit. For those not in the know Escape rooms are essentially giant brain teasers. The first real life escape room was opened in Japan in around 2007, although there had been web games featuring mystery rooms prior to that date.
Australian-based RE Soilstone Ltd will be at the 2019 Marine and Coastal Civil Engineering Expo. The company provides construction services, using a thoroughly tested and robust alternative building system to deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions. Soilstone specialises in engineered soil processing on site using existing in-situ material. The process is an innovation in earthworks; improving loose soil and rocks to engineered stone with reinforcement. Soilstone sustainably recycles demolition waste aggregate materials and uses processed recycled material for reinforcing and strengthening infrastructures such as gravity mass walls, foundation bases and water holding mass structures.
Participants face a variety of challenges and the need to work as a team often throws up some unusual results. Boskalis plan to create a leader
board throughout the event, offering exhibitors and visitors the chance to challenge themselves and others.
SOILSTONE™ AT M&CCE EXPO problems such as slope embankment and coastal erosion; prevention and repairing of earthquake damage to buildings; complex construction; flood mitigation and management, and prevention and repairing of flood damage to buildings. RE Soilstone also has its own Buttress Soilstone Walling System; an economical innovative bracing and support wall system, engineered as an innovative holding structure for mass soil stone as well as footing supports, retaining walls, and a bracing wall system
Edgar Arevalo Agda, Consulting Structural/Civil/Research engineer for RE Soilstone says the cost benefits and value-added savings are achieved through the use of recycled material as it is both cheaper to obtain and is environmentally sustainable. He states that reengineering and re-using in-situ materials reduces the dependence on importing materials, leading to a thoroughly tested and robust alternative building system that delivers innovative and cost effective solutions.
RECYCLED REINFORCEMENTS Using a stabilised mass fill of sand with stone properties Soilstone is able to immobilise loose sand, add recycled reinforcements to help strengthen the shear strength and bearing of the structure, then builds as a terrace embankment for sustainable development and a structure that is built to last. Working with local and State governments, companies and individuals, RE Soilstone provides alternative solutions to complex

M&CCE PROJECT SPOTLIGHT
RIVER MERSEY BANKS ON NAUE GEOSYNTHETICS NAUE’s Terrafix® B813 – a geosynthetic sand matting product – has been employed in the restoration of a stretch of eroded river bank along the northern side of the River Mersey near Warrington, Cheshire UK. The pathway, which had been severely affected by a bank slip following a rapid drop in water levels, affords views across the Mersey to the Woolston Eyes – an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. Part of a multi-million-pound River Mersey Flood Risk Management Scheme, restoration of the 370m section of river bank required construction of a 20m wide revetment, with a typical gradient of 1:3.5, followed by installation of a sheet piled wall along the top of the bank, to be finished with a timber coping and timber cladding on the dry face. The engineered design required the revetment
to be faced with rock reinforcement which would extend below water level to the river bed – providing physical support for the sheet piles and protecting the river bank from future scour. Due to the weak condition of the damaged river bank, the design first required placement of a geotextile layer to provide, stability, separation, filtration and protection. Terrafix® B813 sand matting sinks in water and contours to the substrate below; ideal for
underwater bed stabilisation applications. The three-dimensional structure and flexibility makes it resistant to damage from the impact of bucket loads of stone cover, without loss of filtration performance. The ballast layer also prevents against water movement forming folds in the geotextile. The non-woven geotextile retains weak soils, while allowing the passage of water, and the large effective pore space of the Terrafix® structure provides an excellent environment to establish the propagation of local flora and fauna. Access was very restricted and installation and subsequent placement of rock armour had to be carried out from the river via a floating pontoon using a long reach excavator fitted with a spreader bar; deploying the Terrafix® from the top of the river bank down into the River Mersey.
New Headwalls from Kaymac The existing flap valve and headwall at Tuddenham Outfall, Suffolk UK, had fallen into disrepair and a new headwall structure and HDPE flap valve were required to prevent the River Lark flooding through the Tuddenham Stream. The Works were carried out by Kaymac on behalf of the Principal Contractor JN Bentley for the Client, Environment Agency. Situated at the confluence of the Tuddenham Stream and the River Lark, lack of land access to this area meant transport plant and materials were transported to the site by a barge constructed from sectional steel pontoons; maintained during the works by a pair of 6m long spud legs. The project called for the installation of 38 PU18 steel piles which would form the new headwall structure. The piles were to be driven using a EMV220 piling vibrator mounted onto a Komatsu PC138US-10 excavator.
Prior to the construction of the new headwall, the old steel piles were removed from the existing headwall using the EMV, the redundant flap door was then removed and new piles installed. A temporary cofferdam, formed in front of the outfall, was then dewatered using hydraulic submersible pumps to allow a section of the existing 1600mm corrugated steel pipe carrying the stream (once a blanking plate had been fitted to the inlet end) to be cut out and removed. A steel back shutter was installed to stabilise the ground behind the outlet. The new steel headwall, with a spigot to fit the bore of the existing pipe, along with the flap valve frame was fully welded to the piles on both sides. Stone was then laid onto geotextile in front of the outlet, and a 200mm thick reinforced concrete slab constructed on top of the stone. Once piles had been flame cut down to the
required height, a steel capping beam was welded to the top. The ground behind the piles was then filled with materials won from reducing the bed level of the river down to the invert level of the stream. Once the door was fitted to the flap valve frame, divers cut the piles of the cofferdam to allow the river and stream levels to equalise. Finally, a 400mm diameter Key-Klamp handrailing system was fitted to the top of the capping beam. Top soil was then imported onto the top of the backfilled areas to promote the reinstatement of vegetation along the rear side of the completed structure. Wakisa Mphwanthe, Quantity Surveyor at principal contractor Mott JN Bentley, said, ‘The completed works look fantastic. we appreciate your level of workmanship in accommodating the various changes - from initial enquiry to project completion’.

As the 75th anniversary of D-Day approaches leading marine construction and renewables firm, Red7Marine, will be reflecting on their part in the successful recovery of several historic kite anchors which were designed for the Mulberry Harbours in the D-Day landings. The anchors were retrieved from the Isle of Wight foreshore in time for the commemorations of the historic events of 6 June 1944. The anchors were designed by civil engineer, Allan Beckett MBE, who also designed the ‘Whale’, a floating roadway which was integral to the successful installation of the Mulberry Harbours. The invention played a crucial part in supporting the D-Day landings as a floating road to unload cargo and troops. SALVAGE PROJECT Few of the anchors survived after the Normandy landings of June 1944, however Red7Marine was involved in the salvage project to recover the remaining anchors from the Isle of Wight. Working for the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Red7Marine successfully recovered the anchors from the Isle of Wight and safely transported them to the Mary Rose Trust for conservation to preserve these important items of maritime history. Nick Offord, Chief Executive at Red7Marine commented: “We were delighted to be involved in this prestigious project reflecting the maritime history of Britain. Allan Beckett’s invention is widely considered as one of the greatest engineering inventions of World War Two and it was amazing to play a part in the kite anchor’s history. Red7Marine’s experienced, diverse team has the ability to carry out over-water operations and it was a pleasure to be involved in retrieving these historic items.” Tim Beckett, Director, Beckett Rankine adds: “The Beckett Family is delighted with the salvage of these Kite anchors from the bed of the Solent. Until recently we have only been aware of a single surviving Kite anchor, which is in a private museum in Normandy.”
