WATERSPORTS PARTICIPATION RISES IN THE UK

LOGISTICS ARE BEING WORKED OUT

This month I had the pleasure of attending the inland waterways event, Crick Boat Show.

It’s always a pleasure attending the show and seeing the latest developments in this sector and this year didn’t disappoint.

One particularly interesting development was the steady increase in electric and hybrid powered craft that are now being bought and used together with the introduction of hydrogen powered propulsion.

As with the coastal side of our industry, there is still a long way to go, but progress is being made and like their coastal counterparts, inland marinas are working on the logistics of providing alternative power charging.

A green campaign is one of those currently being run by the Inland Waterways Association. The association is calling for 300 charging points to be installed as an essential step towards electric propulsion and as a way of reducing emissions from stoves and engines being run to charge batteries.

Around 13.2 million UK adults tried a boating activity in 2022, up 3% from 12.8 million in 2021.

The figures are from the Watersports Participation Survey 2022 which shows that more than 10 million people took part in one or more boating activities once or twice in 2022, whilst the number of people taking part more frequently in on water activities remained similar to the previous year (3.2 million).

“It is encouraging to see that watersports participation has continued to prove popular with the UK population post the pandemic boom,” said Lesley Robinson, CEO, British Marine.

“Paddle sport activities, particularly stand up paddleboarding, which are easily accessible both on the coast and inland waterways, have remained extremely popular with participation figures

continuing to rise, however it does appear that the trend is still for more infrequent, experiential participation rather than regular participation.”

With the popularity of paddleboarding continuing to increase, British Canoeing has been formally recognised as a National Governing Body for the sport by Sport England and has appointed a new stand up paddleboarding lead for the organisation.

“The ongoing growth of stand up paddleboarding has been unprecedented,” said Ashley Metcalfe, CEO British Canoeing, who also warned that more safety measures should be put in place.

“Our new status as a recognised body presents us with a great opportunity to develop the discipline further and ensure safety guidance is enhanced for new and experienced paddlers,” he said.

The Watersports Participation Survey covers participation from October 2021 to September 2022.

The survey is conducted annually by a consortium of marine bodies including British Marine, Royal Yachting Association, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, British Canoeing, Canal and River Trust and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science.

The core boating activities include small sailboat racing, other small sailboat activities, yacht racing, yacht cruising, power boating, general motor boating/ cruising, canal boating, canoeing, rowing/sculling, windsurfing, water skiing and wakeboarding and using personal watercraft.

The IWA is also calling for further use of biofuels – a campaign that it first launched in 2021.

It’s clear that progress is being made on both of these issues and there is an uptake in demand.

In the long term, hydrogen-powered fuel cells are predicted to become a standard specification for new boats but in the short term the use of biofuels may be the best hope for greener boating.

It’s clear that we need organisations such as the IWA to campaign on various waterways issues and to continue highlighting and bringing issues to our attention.

The latest campaign by the IWA is its Protect Our Waterways that was launched in March that aims to raise awareness of the threat to Britain’s canals and rivers. Various studies have shown how important our inland waterways are to both the economy and also to people’s mental health and wellbeing.

The IWA points out that we need boats to continue to use the waterways otherwise they will become silted up and become rubbish tips.

It’s also calling for community collaboration and events to be organised to highlight the benefits of the waterways. As an industry, we need to do all we can to support these campaigns and continue to work to safeguard the country’s assets, helping to raise awareness of the threat the waterways are under.

And if any of us can give further practical support, our industry as a whole will benefit.

Acquisition

Ship repair and maintenance group

Amarix, the owner of Macor and ETI Services companies, has acquired a 100% stake in French electrical and electromechanical services company Yachtelec. The acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, is part of a wider strategy to increase the group’s market presence and to expand the company’s Macor brand in the international super- and mega-yacht sectors.

Partnership

Greenline Yachts, hybrid yachts manufacturer, has partnered with luxury yacht dealer Argo Yachting. Under the partnership, Argo Yachting will act as the official representative of Greenline Yachts in Spain, offering sales and after-sales support for the entire range of Greenline Yachts models. Greenline introduced its first hybrid boat in 2008 and now has eight boats in its range from 11.99m to 20.8m in overall length. The boats are manufactured in Slovenia.

The annual economic impact of recreational boating in the States has increased 36% over the last five years, from $170B in 2018 to $230B in 2023.

The figures are from data collated by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) which found the industry’s contributions to the US workforce also grew, with an 18% increase in jobs supported, from 691,000 in 2018 to more than 812,000 in 2023.

The study, conducted by John Dunham & Associates, measured the US recreational boating industry’s total economic activity as well number of jobs and businesses supported.

“Recreational boating and fishing are a major economic engine in the US and the latest economic analysis underscores the extraordinary growth and demand our industry has experienced coming out of the pandemic,” said

Frank Hugelmeyer, NMMA president. “The profound impact the past few years have had on our industry cannot be denied as we’ve seen Americans seek out boating and fishing in record numbers, driving significant economic output and

supporting tens of thousands of small businesses and nearly a million jobs.”

In addition to examining the overall US impact, the analysis broke down data to US state level. Florida and California retained their first and

second spots respectively, with Texas third, followed by Michigan and New York. Georgia and Minnesota each saw upwards of a 120% increase in both economic output and job growth.

PATENTS GRANTED IN 85 COUNTRIES

Dredging company, Haven Dredging, has been granted patent protection in more than 85 counties for its new technology, Tiamat, with further patent applications pending.

Tiamat, an agitation dredging solution, is said to offer lower maintenance dredging costs and be a cleaner process compared to traditional methods.

The patents relate to dredging services across both coastal and harbourside dredging, as well as river dredging.

Tiamat can be towed by a relatively small work vessel and consists of a frame carrying two pumps.

One pump is used to inject water into the sediment overlying the bed of the harbour, while the second pump extracts the diluted silt and pumps it up a flume, from where it is released into the water column.

“We are incredibly proud of Tiamat and are encouraged by the positive feedback we are receiving

around the globe,” said Jake Storey,

“Tiamat aims to provide businesses with the opportunity to choose a responsible, sustainable and economical method of agitation dredging – and this level of protection

makes for an attractive proposition for potential licensees and commercial opportunities with ports and authorities around the world.”

POPULARITY OF WATER SPORTS LEADS TO RISE IN MARINE INCIDENTS

5 Inadequate trip planning

Vision for wind technology promotion

The Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) has made a raft of safety recommendations following its analysis of an incident involving six kayakers on Mulroy Bay, Co. Donegal.

On 19 March 2022, five inexperienced participants set out on a commercial trip with guide. The group got into difficulty when the wind speed increased and the sea state deteriorated, resulting in the capsize of three kayaks.

One participant and the trip organiser were in the water for an hour, and both required hospital treatment after their eventual rescue by the Coast Guard.

The MCIB’s investigation found a number of factors contributed to the incident which they deem to have ‘posed a threat of death or serious injury’. These were:

5 Unsuitable weather conditions

5 Inadequate training and qualifications

5 Inadequate protective clothing

5 Inadequate safety environment

Safety recommendations have been made to the trip organiser, Canoeing Ireland and Sport Ireland, Water Safety Ireland, the Minister for Transport, and all providers of paddle sports activities.

These recommendations are against a backdrop of a pattern the MCIB says it has observed of repeated incidents.

How I got into this industry...

After 13 years in motorsport, I was introduced to the marine industry in 2008 through a personal connection.

Best advice I’ve ever received... Never give up.

One thing the industry needs less of is...

Can I reverse that? The industry needs continued investment in the future generation. It’s important that we continue to make the industry more accessible, creating a skilled workforce through ongoing university qualifications & apprenticeships, building a career pathway for those coming into the industry and that businesses support these developments.

Most hated buzzword or workplace expression...

I’m going to offer a positive one instead! Replace Key Performance Indicator with these KPIs: Keep People Informed, Keep People Involved, Keep People Interested, Keep People Inspired.

Best place I’ve been… Too many…. I’ve been lucky to have travelled a lot through North & Central America, Asia and most of Europe. However, with my own family, the best place is always home.

Don't worry about...

What you cannot change, focus on what you can and take action.

Favourite meal... Probably seafood

One thing I couldn’t live without...

I really enjoy running and I would miss this if I ever had to stop.

How I cope with stress... In work, you need a framework to make decisions, a strong team, and your personal purpose needs to align to the business ambition. Stress for me is when any of these elements is missing or strained, and generally my personal solution is to go for an early morning run as the cause and solution normally become clear.

Something about you that people might be surprised by...

Ask me when you see me, I’m quite a private person but always happy to talk about what I like outside of work.

It’s been a long drawn out spring, but summer must be around the corner as I have already heard the two phases (while working on a boat in a marina) that bring my blood to the boil quicker than a Turkish steam room.

I can honestly say those words in any context fill me with dread, but whenever it relates to work on a boat it really leaves me steaming and full of horror.

Why is it so difficult to find the people to really care, that will say no, this has to be done right - and that’s just the owners…

How can we help to change the attitude?

Just get them to think about the consequences when ‘it will do’ no longer does, when good enough comes back to haunt you when you’re out on the water.

What can be changed to ensure that someone will make certain that the job has been completed correctly and safely?

Well let’s be honest, until we get a grip of compulsory training, combined with the sticky subject of compulsory boat registration (most likely driven through insurance requirements) the industry is fighting an apathetic customer who wants a job done quickly and cheaply. \Yes I generalise but we have all been around long enough to see it in action.

The industry needs to do more to pick up the batten and shout about quality, it is a boat in the big blue, not a car after all.

SANLORENZO PROFITS UP THANKS TO GOOD STRATEGY

Spanish yachtbuilder Sanlorenzo achieved increased profits in the first quarter of 2023 thanks to some new lines, strategic acquisitions and a commitment to sustainability.

Net revenue in the first quarter of 2023 amounted to €183.7 million, up by 11.8% compared to €164.4 million in the same period of 2022. Pre-tax profit amounted to €24.0 million, up by 22.0% compared to €19.6 million.

”We are confident that the future of the sector will depend on innovation, especially in the field of sustainability. Therefore, by providing concrete answers and with a longterm vision to lead towards a zero-emission yachting transition, we continue to invest in research and development, confident of the path we have taken,” said Massimo

Perotti, chairman and chief executive, Sanlorenzo.

Financial gains

The yacht division generated net revenues equal to €117.4 million, while the superyacht division acheived net revenues equal to €46.4 million, up by 41.4% compared to the first quarter of 2022.

Breakdown by geographical area confirmed the continuous expansion of the European market, up by 50.3% compared to the first quarter of 2022. The MEA area, up by 96.4%, largely compensated the slowdown in the Americas and APAC.

Organic net investments made in the first quarter of 2023 amounted to €6 million, including 40% for product development and sustainability projects related to technologies

based on fuel cells powered by green methanol.

Investment was also made in further acquisitions. In March 2023, Sanlorenzo acquired a 49.0% stake in one of its key suppliers, Sea Energy, a marine electronics company, for €2.7 million.

In May 2023, Sanlorenzo closed the purchase of a further 33% stake in Duerre, a company which specialises in high-end furniture for superyachts, for €2 million. Sanlorenzo now has a 66% majority stake in the company.

Alongside the continuous expansion of its existing ranges, Sanlorenzo now has two new lines - X-Space for the Superyacht Division and Bluegame Multi-Hull (BGM). This is in addition to its SP line introduced in the second half of 2022.

Sustainability is at the heart of the company’s

new product development strategy, which envisages an ambitious programme that sees the application of technologies focused on the marine use of methanol fuel cells.

Thanks to its exclusive agreement signed in 2021 with Siemens Energy, the segment of yachts above 40 metres in length will initially see the integration of fuel cells powered by hydrogen obtained from methanol. The first vessel will be a 50Steel superyacht scheduled for delivery in 2024.

In 2026, Sanlorenzo is planning to develop its first superyacht between 50 and 60 metres to be powered by fuel cells combined with propulsion using bi-fuel main engines which can also be powered by methanol.

ELECTRIC DRIVE READY FOR SEA TRIALS

On-water testing of a ground-breaking highperformance electric drive is set to take place imminently.

The eD-QDrive from eD-TEC is a new plug-andplay electric sterndrive system and accompanying technology stack. Unveiled during Cannes Yachting Festival in 2022 its first commercial installation on board a powercat called the Silent-Speed 28 is expected this year.

Initial tests on board a purpose-built test monohull have proved positive with the drive and technology working well at 800rpm in the test pool. But development has not been plain sailing all the way.

“We meant to start onwater testing in October 2022 so we are six months behind

schedule,” said Michael Jost, founder of eD-TEC.

“But we have found problems and we have learnt a lot – that’s the way it is with prototypes and with new technologies.”

These problems include the discovery of an electromagnetic noise from the motors which has been causing interference in other systems and circuits.

Other issues have centred around water and oil leaks on the test rig which have little to do with the drive itself and problems with a

new gearbox which have now been fixed.

The eD-QDrive is a pair of transom-mounted sterndrive units with surface-piercing propeller linked to a high-power electric motor, fed by a battery bank with a high C-rate. Full sea trials of the system running at 4,000rpm on board both the test monohull and a catamaran are now scheduled.

“The boat is ready, the drives are ready and we are finally ready for the sea,” said Michael.

Mental Health Awareness

Week is took place from 15 to 21 May. The aim of the week is to provide an opportunity to focus on achieving good mental health.

Each year has a theme. Last year it was loneliness, this year it’s anxiety.

The Mental Health Foundation, which hosts Mental Health Awareness Week, picked loneliness as the theme for 2022 because “loneliness is affecting more and more of us in the UK and has had a huge impact on our physical and mental health during the pandemic” and “reducing loneliness is a major step towards a mentally healthy society”.

Some studies, including material from the mental health charity, Mind, have found that loneliness increases the risk of certain mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. While some may choose to be alone and live happily without much contact with other people, others may find this a lonely experience. Mind says that feeling lonely isn’t in itself a mental health problem, but the two are strongly linked. Having a mental health problem can increase someone’s chances of feeling lonely.

Mind also states that research has suggested that loneliness is associated with an increased risk of certain mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, sleep problems and increased stress.

A large part of many employment lawyer’s practices involves advising clients who are experiencing mental ill health and the corresponding impact that has on their working life. Therefore, it’s important to recognise that loneliness

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS AND LONELINESS

from home; circulating a chart throughout the week alongside a colour coded diary system so that all can easily see who will be in the office on which days; setting up a group WhatsApp what where staff discuss non-work-related matters; and having birthday cards and gifts sent to employees homes on their birthday day off

is not just something that is experienced by people in their homelife, many people often feel lonely at work. This is not confined to people who are alone (for example working from home). It also includes those experiencing workplace issues. For example, anyone struggling with their workload or relationships with colleagues can feel incredibly lonely and unsupported.

In advance of Mental Health Awareness Week last year, Mind published the key findings of a survey it conducted into how the pandemic has affected people at work. 42,000 staff from 114 organisations across the UK were surveyed as part of the Workplace Wellbeing Index 2020/21, including people who had been furloughed, worked from home, or continued to work on site.

Two of these findings are particularly important when considering loneliness in the workplace:

5 41% of people reported that their mental health got worse during the pandemic, but those who worked on site and felt supported by their employer were least likely to report a worsening in their mental health; and

5 Similarly, 41% of people found it difficult to remain motivated at work during the pandemic, with remote workers finding it more difficult than those who continued to work onsite.

By the very nature of their work, office workers were the biggest group of people who worked from home during the pandemic. They were also the last group of people to be permitted to return to the workplace.

It might be assumed that workplace loneliness will evaporate now that many of us have returned to the office for at least some of the working week. However, that is not necessarily the case, particularly in workforces where some

people work in the office and some work from home.

Employers are under a specific duty to make reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities, but loneliness can affect all of us. Employers need to take care to ensure that loneliness amongst the workforce is not created, or exacerbated, while they adjust to the post-pandemic way of working.

Employers effectively need to adjust workplaces for employees and the new way of working and there are a number of initiatives that can be put in place to help reduce any loneliness experienced in a workplace.

These include having a flexible approach to working in the office, which allows staff to choose the days on which they come in and which means that there is a regular rotation of who is in the office and who works

But there’s more –employers could run weekly team meetings where every member of the firm updates the group on how busy they are, what they are working on and can raise any issues with their workload; holding monthly supervision meetings with a managers to discuss the current workload; setting up an open door/phoneline policy where team members can speak to each other in person or on a video call/ phone call at any time during the working day; holding weekly communal lunches in the kitchen area for those working in the office, giving the team a chance to socialise during the day; running regular hybrid “know how” meetings and training sessions where people are able to contribute remotely and in person; and quarterly whole team social events.

Of course, these are just some of the things that employers can do as part of an initiative to promote good mental health. But no matter the approach, it’s important to remember that while Mental Health Awareness Week runs just once a year, the subject is something that should be borne in mind all the year around. Employers should find that a little time spent reducing loneliness within their workforce will pay dividends for all.

New IPS system for professional vessels

Volvo Penta is to introduce a new Inboard Performance System (IPS) platform – the next evolution in its integrated helm-topropeller experience.

Due to go into production in 2025, the system will build upon the existing Volvo Penta IPS, and will be suitable for professional vessels and superyachts from 25 to 55+ meters with a top speed from 12-40 knots.

In-house development is currently underway with further field tests planned.

“Our passion, experience and history of proven results with Volvo Penta IPS are an integral part of our ongoing technology development – with the aim to reach new heights with this new professional platform,” said Johan Inden, president of Volvo Penta’s marine business.

The system will feature a new, larger marine drive, the Volvo Penta IPS 40.

The drive is designed with a dual power input concept, which will act as an enabler to use different combinations of energy sources, from combustion engines running on renewable fuels to fully electric or hybrid solutions.

The IPS 40 drive will be powered by two Volvo Penta D13 engines, paired with an after-treatment system to comply with the latest IMO Tier III standards.

Through-hull suspension design and integrated exhaust system have been designed for low noise and vibration levels.

A new efficiency-driven feature allows the system to automatically start and stop individual engines based on power needed for each given situation, optimising fuel consumption and engine running hours.

NEW DECKING PREVENTS SERIOUS INJURY

SHOCK WBV will show its new OMEGA Shock Mitigating Decking at Seawork 2023.

The new decking uses the company’s Seawork Innovation Award winning patented Omega profiles to produce the decking which progressively reduces the shock acceleration caused by wave impacts.

Features of the decking include a progressive collapse ability that works when being stood on by a range of occupant weights but also when being knelt on.

“The kneeling aspect is a major and significant benefit as many fast small boats require a single knee down on the deck,” explained Dan Henderson, sales and marketing director for SHOCK WBV.

“When a foam is used

for this, an impact would simply crush the foam and amplify shock rather than reduce it meaning the full impact is transmitted through the knee,

potentially causing serious injury.”

The decking has fully open impact geometry meaning that it will still work when the deck is

New liferafts for up to 16 people

Ocean Safety will launch its new 14 and 16 person ISO 9650 Type 1 compliant commercial liferafts at Seawork 2023.

The new liferafts follow recent changes to the ISO 9650 regulations which allow for a maximum capacity of up to 16 people.

“We’re delighted to be presenting these new additions to our ISO compliant commercial liferaft range which are ideal for UK registered small commercial craft,” says Alistair Hackett, Ocean Safety MD.

“The regulation changes mean that a vessel approved to carry 12 passengers and two crew can now carry a single 14-person liferaft with SOLAS B pack, where previously it would have had to carry two liferafts, therefore reducing stowage space required, decreasing capital outlay and ongoing servicing costs.”

Other products on show by Ocean Safety will include Ocean Signal’s RescueME PLB3, and Spinlock’s DURO SOLAS+ 275N Lifejacket and its recently released Ocean SOLAS Throw-Over Ellipse Liferaft.

Designed and manufactured to meet the needs of vessels complying with the SOLAS/MED requirements, the liferaft is also now available as a MER (Red Ensign) approved liferaft to support UK flagged commercial vessels.

Universally sized, the liferaft’s cylindrical container has been designed to fit specifically into the existing cradles and mountings onboard most commercial vessels, offering superyachts the option to be equipped with the Ocean SOLAS throw-over liferafts without needing to upgrade their onboard stowage.

NEW WAVE INTERNATIONAL WASTEWATER FILTRATION SYSTEM

UK distributor for Wave International products, Halyard, will showing Wave International’s new compact, integrated and intelligent wastewater filtration system for the first time in the UK at Seawork 2023.

Contained within a single unit with a separate display screen which can be remotely mounted for easy viewing, the Wavebrite SMART removes all contaminants from onboard grey water, including plastics, and discharges clean water to meet the EU Waste Water Standard.

“Dealing with grey water is a major issue,” said Paul Gullett, Wave International MD.

“The development of the Wavebrite SMART is in response to an increasing number of boat builders and users wanting a more integrated system.”

One of the recent installations by Westford Services - Micfil ultra fine filters is a bypass oil filtration system for SMS Towage aboard the tug MV Riverman.

The aim of the system is to extend oil change intervals from 1,500 hours to more than 4,000 hours with regular oil sampling, reducing maintenance costs with the cleaner oil reducing wear on the engine.

“The bypass or dialysis filtration system takes an oil feed from the primary filter, through the Micfil 0.5 μm ultra fine filter system returning the oil to the sump,” explained Charles Hansard of Micfil. “A baffle plate within the filter system reduces the flow to the volume of one sump per hour removing all moisture and particulates.”

And Charles explained that benefits of the oil filtration include a reduction

The system can be installed in new builds or as a retrofit and includes a multifunction display screen which shows the flow rate, daily and total volumes of filtered grey water, and the condition and status of the filters.

The input of grey water is

controlled by a level switch located in the wastewater sump, which comes supplied with the unit.

Up to 20,000 litres of grey water can be processed before the main filter needs to be changed.

A QR code enables users to access unit and filter

replacement information. Data available also shows the flow rate and accumulative volume of grey water filtered over the lifetime of the module, with indicators on the display screen showing if any maintenance is required.

Light work for fouling control

Damen Shipyards has teamed up with AkzoNobel and Philips to develop a fouling control solution using UV-C light technology which could revolutionise the industry.

The technology integrates UV-C lightemitting diodes (LEDs) in a coating scheme which emits just enough light to provide total prevention of biofouling accumulation on the protected area.

Philips first started experimenting with UV-C LED technology in 2014. The technology was known from its use in water treatment and sterilisation applications; it was not believed to have been previously used in open water.

Since joining with AkzoNobel, further progress has been made and smallscale trials have taken place.

The addition of Damen to the consortium will mean the technology can be more widely tested with the goal of creating a fully biocide-free fouling control solution which will provide performance with economic and environmental benefits.

“By offering access to our technologies through our technology licensing programs, we drive cooperation with partners that share our commitment to delivering impactful innovations,” said Jako Eleveld, head of IP licensing at Philips. “It’s great to see that Philips’ UV-C technology has found its way to this innovative antifouling solution.”

As well as continuing to improve the technology, a key next step for the consortium is vessel integration and the creation of a commercially viable solution.

8 Damen Shipyards will be at Seawork on stands Q12 and VC1.

Hundested Propeller will debut its range of propulsion systems at Seawork 2023.

The company’s range includes controllable pitch propellers, controllable pitch gear boxes, thrusters and pitch control units.

AnchorGuardian uses new patented technology to minimise the risk of anchor drag.

Sensors are used to provide intelligent data throughout the anchoring procedure, providing a continuous stream of information to a captain and crew.

“The technology is entirely new and provides a smarter way, a safer way we can anchor,” explained Suzy Chisholm, head of company communications and co-founder.

“We’re providing a wealth of information to a captain and crew, intelligence they didn’t have before; laying the anchor, at anchor and lifting.

“We’re able to give all the information, what sediment there is, how far the anchor is from the seabed, when the anchor has hit the seabed, how its lying on the seabed.

“Our ultimate goal is to

bring safety to anchoring.” And if the anchor does start to drag, information is provided on how fast it’s moving, with data visible on an electronic chart, providing predictions and triggering alarms, minimising the risk of groundings, collisions and environmental damage with the anchor ripping up the seabed.

The technology operates independently of a GPS and any movement of a ship.

“How to reduce the impact of an anchor on the seabed is a huge issue,” added Suzy. “Anchors do get dragged, and we want to minimise that as much as possible.

“It’s another tool in the crew’s arsenal.”

will receive the quality of customer service that is the hallmark of the brand.”

8 The generators will be shown at Seawork on stand F8.

“Most importantly, for boat owners, these thrusters are much smaller and lightweight than previously. Available space to fit inside the boats is always a bit issue, so with these you might be able to fit a more powerful thruster in the same space, or just get one to fit where previously there wasn’t room,” he added.

The new thruster combines an electric motor with Sleipner’s gearleg design and Q-Prop skew propeller for optimal performance and runtime.

“They are highly efficient and can run for as long as you supply power to them,” said Thomas. “This means there are the best choice for joystick manoeuvring systems.”

Key features

The E-Thruster series is up to 50% lighter than equivalent thrusters and more compact. They are splash-proof, ignitionprotected and come with an integrated inverter for variable speed control.

Existing Sleipner thruster models can be upgraded with the new E-series electric motor either directly or by using an adapter plate between bracket and motor.

NEW DOMETIC SYSTEM PROVIDES HEATING AND AIR CON

Today’s boaters are all too aware that air conditioning has one of the biggest power draws of systems found onboard and there is a growing demand for technology advancements to provide more efficient systems which can be retrofitted to meet climate control needs.

One of these is Dometic’s latest system, the Voyager Series TX self-contained air conditioning unit.

The unit offers variable speed air conditioning and is an integrated unit supplying both air conditioning and heating to vessels.

The technology around the speed management of the system enables a reduction in power draw, achieved by regulating

the compressor speed according to the needs of the vessel.

Once temperature requirements have been

met, the speed is reduced, resulting in a more efficient and quieter operation.

“The days of air conditioning being

such an inefficient and noise polluting system onboard are gone with the introduction of the TX Series,” said Chris Fower, sales and marketing director at Dometic’s UK supplier, Fischer Panda UK.

“The technology allows a smarter and more efficient approach to power systems on leisure vessels and Fischer Panda UK is delighted to be able to introduce a robust, effective self-contained air conditioning unit among our portfolio of efficient hybrid system solutions.”

The system will shortly be available to the UK market.

SYNTHETIC FUEL TRIAL FOR SIGNATURE 95

Meros Yacht Sharing has received approval for its new Sunseeker Signature 95 yacht to use synthetic fuels in accordance with ISO EN 15940.

This is the first Sunseeker of this size and class to be powered by synthetic fuel – supplied by Repsol - and the introduction of the fuel could lead the way for the use of low-CO2 or CO2neutral fuels.

The Signature 95 is equipped with a V-12 2000 M96X Rolls Royce mtu 2000 series engine.

The engine is suitable for low-CO2 or CO2-neutral synthetic fuels, such

as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) fuel.

“We are building on partners who are very innovative themselves and who are actively working on sustainability issues in order to make their contribution to achieving the climate goals we have set,” said Meros founder and MD, Martin Huber. “This was a key point for us why we chose Sunseeker yachts and mtu engines from Rolls-Royce for our fleet expansion plans at Meros.”

Meros has been exploring hybrid propulsion since 2019.

In the eventuality of tougher restrictions

regarding CO2-emission, this will secure entry for the yachts into eco-sensitive marinas and zero-emission zones.

Meros is also working on solutions to be able to stock synthetic and fossil fuels separately and will evaluate the operation of Simufuel as part of field trials - the first field trials of the Signature 95 will take place with her maiden e-fuel voyage to the Monaco Grand Prix later in May.

Meros Yacht Sharing is based in Malta, Spain, Germany and soon in the UK and offers co-ownership of new Sunseeker yachts.

NEW KEYPADS ARE UNOBTRUSIVE AND INTUITIVE

Crestron Electronics has launched the next generation of its Horizon keypads and dimmers.

The company says the keypads have been designed to be unobtrusive when it’s not in use and completely intuitive when it is.

“Our next generation of Crestron Horizon keypads take every aspect of this product to the next level and are a thoughtful addition to the Crestron lighting line,” said Daniel Kerkhof, director Crestron Marine. “The ways in which dealers can not only configure the keypads but

also order and install is a huge win.”

The keypads and dimmers prioritise clean design with improved colour, finish, and alignment. Feedback from owners, dealers, and architects was used to redesign the products, from the single faceplate to the button protrusion which has been manufactured to provide an enhanced texture and feel when pressed.

Functionality has been built into the backlighting of the keypads and dimmers, allowing the colour temperature of the backlight to be adjusted.

A new ‘dim-to-warm’ theme uses a local ambient sensor to automatically set the button backlight to cooler or warmer based on the intensity of the room lighting.

Crestron has also eliminated the shine of the keypads as well as reduced the light bleeds between the buttons and the faceplate to make the products blend into dark or dimly lit rooms.

The new keypads and dimmers are available in six configurations, from single-button options up to five buttons in a single gang arrangement.

Quay Crew commits to improving diversity

Recruitment agency, Quay Crew, has teamed up with London’s Greig City Academy (GCA) to provide superyacht employment opportunities to young people from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds.

The recruiter will fund 100% of the STCW, PBL2 and ENG1 medical for suitable candidates from GCA’s sailing school programme.

Director, Tim Clarke, will also provide interview coaching and mentoring to the young people whilst actively promoting diversity to superyacht clients.

“It was clear that those who have been through the GCA sailing programme have proven they are motivated, committed and capable – all excellent traits of solid superyacht crew,” said Tim. “But due to their backgrounds and financial situation, it was impossible for them to break into the superyacht industry, so we thought we could help change that.”

The Greig City Academy sailing programme was founded in 2014 and has created opportunities for more than 1,000 students from ethnic minority groups and often disadvantaged backgrounds.

Quay Crew has funded the STCW, PBL2 and ENG1 medical with Flying Fish training school in Cowes, Isle of Wight, which has also provided the accommodation for the course free of charge.

The sailing programme currently costs around £200,000 a year to run and a charity, the Scaramouche Sailing Trust, has been set up to raise funds with ambitions to involve other inner-city schools.

Any recruitment fees generated from the placement of crew from GCA will be donated to the Trust.

NEW SLEEK AND MODERN DESIGN FOR DIRECTOR’S CHAIR

Onward Trading’s new Edge Teak Directors Chair has a navy cushion and a new sleek and modern design.

The new design allows users to easily slide cushions into place; with the chair also having a wider seat and higher back than the original, providing users with more room and comfort.

The chair is available in an oiled or un-oiled finish and measures 89cm in height with a depth of 49.5cm and 57cm wide. The seat height is 47cm.

When folded, the chair measures 50cm x 22cm x 70cm.

The hinges are stainless-steel with the chair manufactured from plantation teak by joiners in Thailand, with the teak products supporting the local community.

“After decades of selling premium quality folding directors chairs, it

was time to introduce a contemporary version that exceeds the high standards set by the original version,”

explained Ian Cooke, Onward Trading MD. “The chair has super comfortable upholstery with solid teak and stainless-steel

materials, that are designed to last in the harsh marine environment.”

Onward Marine is distributed by C-Quip.

EQUIPPING SUPERYACHTS WITH THE POWER OF FLIGHT

AIR has partnered up with The International SeaKeepers Society to ensure that its eVTOL is capable of marine operations such as yacht transport and resupply.

The partnership will ensure AIR’s eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) models are available for use as auxiliary equipment to extend yachters’ reach and access points beyond yacht capabilities.

“As AIR enters the next stages of growth, we are excited to deliver the value of personal electric flight to additional industries and communities,” said Rani Plaut, CEO and co-founder of AIR.

“In addition to helping improve yacht logistics, this partnership enables yachters to add an extra layer of sky-high adventure to sea excursions and is a significant step in our

mission to advance air mobility adoption around the world.”

Electrical revolution

AIR and SeaKeepers’ collaboration is the latest in the midst of an ongoing aviation industry revolution to electrify aircraft.

As an official AIR Brand Ambassador, SeaKeepers will play a significant role in expanding and enabling AIR’s vision for the future – the

mass adoption of personal air vehicles – by focusing on the unique market of the yachting community.

Incorporating the AIR ONE on yachting expeditions simplifies near-shore commutes on and off the yacht by eliminating the need to carry aviation fuel and a variety of spare parts, removing the obstacle of requiring a professional pilot and allowing for charging using onboard generators.

AIR’s inaugural vehicle, AIR ONE, is a sporty, allelectric two-seater eVTOL offering a practical range on a single charge at speeds up to 155 miles per hour (250 km/h). The AIR ONE allows owners to take off and land on any flat surface with a 250kg payload, including a yacht deck.

Barton Marine has appointed Phil Wood as its new head of sales and marketing.

Phil will be responsible for supporting Barton’s existing distributor and dealer network, alongside working with the wider team to further growth opportunities as Barton continues its expansion plans and focuses on product innovation.

His passion for the marine industry is teamed with a background in engineering and further combined with business experience gained from working in senior sales and business development positions across a range of companies covering maritime security to yacht deliveries and outside the industry in TV production.

“I was immediately attracted to Barton Marine as the position combines my love of being out on the water with engineering,” said Phil.

Suzanne Blaustone, Barton Marine CEO added: “It was immediately apparent that Phil would be the perfect fit to help us push our exciting plans for the future forward. His marine industry knowledge and love of sailing is perfectly aligned with our business values, and I am sure he will be fully up to speed in the near future serving our partners around the world.”

Julian Weatherill has joined the management team of Spirit Yachts as production and design director.

Having worked in the marine industry for 30 years, Julian brings much experience to the team. In addition to sales and client management roles at several British boat builders, Julian has previously overseen the design and construction of sailing superyachts. Prior to his career on land, Julian spent ten years as a full-time skipper onboard cruising yachts ranging from 65100ft, sailing over 80,000nm.

“Julian’s reputation is well- known across the marine industry,” said Spirit Yachts’ MD, Karen Underwood. “He is professional, highly experienced, and he has a great rapport with clients and staff.”

Julian added: “I have always admired Spirit Yachts from afar and I have been even more impressed with the quality of their yachts up close and out sailing. The team is passionate, and their work is world-class. I am looking forward to a bright future with the company.”

Marine business and marketing consultancy YESSSS, has appointed Chris Baird as joint CEO alongside Nona Pedersen.

Chris has more than 30 years’ experience in the marine industry having begun his career as director of a sailing school and charter business in Australia.

He became CEO of NAVMAN Australia in 2000, and later founded FUSION Electronics Australia, later moving to New Zealand as CEO of FUSION International.

Most recently, Chris has served as CEO and MD of Propspeed International.

“I am very excited to join YESSSS and work with the team to help marine businesses achieve their goals,” said Chris. “At YESSSS, I hope to remind the industry that we should reflect our customers, who love boating and the enjoyment it brings. Our goal at YESSSS is to be a faithful supporter of the entire industry.”

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) has appointed Professor Sarah Niblock as CEO, with primary responsibility for the organisation’s long-term strategy.

Raised on Merseyside, Sarah is an experienced narrowboater and a qualified helmsman with more than 15 years’ senior leadership experience in the university and charity sectors.

She joins IWA from the UK Council for Psychotherapy where she was chief executive.

She is an advisor to Imperial College London’s Climate Cares research project, examining the interconnection between the natural environment and our wellbeing. Sarah was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2022 by Edge Hill University for her contribution to public life and is a visiting professor in counselling psychology at York St John University.

“Supporting and regenerating our inland waterways is one of the top talking points in the UK. It’s no wonder, given the welldocumented role that our rivers, estuaries and canals play in our economy, ecology and wellbeing,” said Sarah.

“My top priority is the Protect Our Waterways campaign to ensure that all our inland waterways are adequately funded.”
