The Jubilee Sailing Trust (Tenacious) Ltd owns and operates the tall ship SV Tenacious and will remain trading, with Tenacious remaining operational and continuing to deliver the current voyage programme.

Assets owned by Jubilee Sailing Trust Ltd will be sold to generate funds for creditor repayment and Lord Nelson will be taken over by the administrators for this purpose.

The Trust was badly hit during Covid and launched its Covid Recovery Campaign to raise funds to help it continue trading.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust Ltd, subsidiary of The Jubilee Sailing Trust, has been put into administration after a principal creditor threatened imminent legal proceedings to reclaim owed credit.

It will cover around 70,000+ sqm - the largest footprint yet - with a doubling of the watersports area.

New features introduced by show organiser British Marine (BM) for 2022 include an Environmental Innovation Showcase highlighting the latest sustainable products, one aspect of an increased focus on sustainability and protecting the environment.

Other key show features include more than 20 world boat launches with three explorer yachts from Arksen and the Southerly 42 from Ocean Shipyard, together with several world product launches such as the new Link smart vessel monitoring system on show by Marine Energy Systems.

An organisational restructure has taken place and there is an ongoing development review.

The layout builds on that of 2021 which saw the introduction of five zones each featuring different types of watersports activities.

The Trust, a registered charity, operates through two subsidiaries - Jubilee Sailing Trust Ltd, and Jubilee Sailing Trust (Tenacious) Ltd. Jubilee Sailing Trust Ltd owns the decommissioned STS Lord Nelson.

Also new for this year is a five-day trial offer for watersports brands which BM says recognises ongoing issues of staff shortages and stock issues. Ten companies are taking part in the trial which, if successful, could be expanded for 2023.

There will also be a careers and apprenticeship day to introduce young people to the marine world and show how they can develop a career in the marine industry. 8 SIBS takes place from 16 to 25 September at Southampton’s Mayflower Park. NEW EXHIBITORS

Since April 2022 £890,897 has been raised, however despite this support, the difficult decision to enter administration needed to be made.

Essential shore-based employees will be transferred to Jubilee Sailing Trust (Tenacious) Ltd.

This year’s Southampton International Boat Show will see 126 companies exhibiting at the show for the first time together with 162 new brands.

There will be 685 individual stands and berths with 298 boats registered for the marina and 387 land stands.

“People were not able to travel so they invested in local leisure activities,” says Jouko.

“A notion of ‘staycation’ wasHowever, created.”people have now started travelling again with a resulting decline in demand.

Europe’s largest in-water show – the first of the new show season - is seen by many as a key indicator of the state of the boating industry and the chance to see the direction the marine industry is taking.

Nautor Swan is another that is introducing sustainable initiatives with a raft of greener options available to buyers.

In addition, Jouko points out the war in Ukraine has brought consumer confidence down at record speed and fuel prices have jumped to all time high.

And SILENT Yachts has announced it is launching a new line of performance boats with a 70-mile range.

“The market in Finland is softening to some extent but it really is no surprise or unexpected.”

Challenge and respect

Official new boat registration statistics for Finland show sales are down by more than 15%.

He concludes: “Also, the high sales of new boats during the worst years of the pandemic may bring quite a number of one to three-year-old boats into the market thus competing with new boat sales as people start turning to other leisure activities.”

And this year, the move towards electric, hybrid, methanol and hydrogen was even more marked, with many boatbuilders announcing their latest advances, planned investments and their efforts towards a more sustainable future.

And he says that with the present realities, we should expect a downturn in the overall interest in boating.

8 A downturn in interest in boating is expected

Among them, Group Beneteau that says it is going to focus more on its environmental impact in two areas, composite materials and propulsion systems.

Among the numerous announcements was one from Rolls-Royce and Sanlorenzo that are teaming up to build a large motoryacht capable of running on green methanol.

“This is the situation with family-size boats. There may be backlogs to the end of 2023, but the material prices have skyrocketed. To what prices have those been sold? And the supply chain is coughing.”

The new Swan 88 will be the company’s first to be equipped with Torqeedo products allowing users to generate power as they sail.

The technology for electric propulsion continues to improve with new products able to cover ever greater distances and speeds.

Cannes was also used as an opportunity for boatbuilders to announce their sustainable plans for the future.

Cannes Yachting Festival has ended on a high note with 140 world premiers, with new designs and trends on show, plus numerous exciting product and technology developments launched.

It will always be a challenge to reconcile our boating activities with respect for the environment and while the marine industry may never be truly green, it’s clear that around the world, more sustainable practices are being implemented. However, rather than isolated, individual initiatives, the industry is now coming together to show what the future could look like and how it can do its bit to adapt to, and respect nature.

Giving his thoughts to the figures, Jouko explains that the pandemic created an unusual peak in boat demand.Inthepast two years many countries have had all time high boat sales with manufacturers not always able to respond to demand.

The interview defined The polar opposite of an exit interview where employers ask why an employee is leaving, the stay interview seeks to understand what would make an employee stay put – what are their motivations, what could be made better for them, and how they envisage their careers developing and how the employer can facilitate this.

work or project status and nor should it be a one-way conversation. And it often helps if an interviewee is told beforehand what the meeting is about and sent a few ‘starter’ questions to help them formulate their thoughts.

It makes sense, then, for employers to retain good employees and one tool to do this is to run what is termed a ‘stay interview’.

USE STAY INTERVIEWS TO UNDERSTAND EMPLOYEES

As for questions, many should be obvious but could include: What is it that makes you get out of bed to come to work? What are the best and worst

things about working here? Why do you stay? If you could make a change, what would it be? Do you feel recognised? What are your motivations when you’re here? What demotivates you? What can we do to support you better? And importantly, what might cause you to want to leave?

ADAM BERNSTEIN: Freelance Financial Journalist

The whole of point of stay interview is for the manager to be able to understand exactly what it is that the employee does, down to the nth degree, every day. The interview needs to uncover how employees visualise their work, how they feel their contribution is perceived, and where they see themselves within the organisation.Astayinterview should not seek information on

Interviews need to be closed properly with the interviewer summarising what the employee has said – both the reasons to stay and the reasons for a departure. It wouldn’t hurt, if, for example, the manager ended by saying something akin to ‘thank you for sharing your thoughts with me; I’ll do whatever I can to make this a place where you want to stay and work.’

Summary

And it’s important that employees can see, post interview, that their comments have been taken on board and change has been actioned where possible. A process that operates on the basis of lip-service is a futile waste of time that will invariably do the exact opposite of what was intended – it’ll cause employees to distrust management and seek to leave.

To start with, the interviewer ought to open the process with words such as ‘I want to discuss with you the reasons why you want to stay with us and what we can do to make it better’ or alternatively, ‘I want to talk informally about your work and how the management can support you.’

The stay interview should be an informal conversation that aims to relax and reassure employees that the employer wants to understand and help with career progression. Further, it should be held in a form to encourage an employee to speak freely, without fear of retribution, and where they can give feedback on what is wrong in the organisation and where

The key is to let the employee feel that they can talk freely and openly so that the manager can learn and then direct appropriate resource where possible.

stay interviews may find themselves becoming an employer of choice. Like any other employer, they will suffer natural losses as employees move away or retire, but they will find it easier – and therefore faster and less expensive – to recruit replacements.

The interview

In today’s market, where employees are in short supply and the web has made both salaries and new job prospects very apparent, management that doesn’t seek to understand how employees feel are destined to lose experienced staff and pay to make good the losses.

xed such as low or unequal remuneration (which could be discriminatory and therefore illegal), a general lack of employee development, or an inconsistent or unpleasant workplace culture.

This leaves employers in a double bind. On the one hand they can struggle to recruit, but on the other, they need to prevent good employees leaving. And it’s a salient point. Estimates vary, but Glassdoor believes it costs at least £3,000 to recruit an employee, while the CIPD’s Resourcing And Talent Planning Survey 2020 thinks that for some employers it can be as high as £5,000 (median).

And while horseracing may have been her favourite sport, the Queen had a long history of seafaring and spent much of her time on yachts, particularly Royal Yachts.

The marine industry has paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the only Queen most of us will ever know.

The last royal yacht was HMY Britannia which served the Queen from 1954 to 1997 and frequently played host to royal family members during the holidays.

One of the Queen’s earlier trips on board Royal Yachts was in 1937, when as Princess Elizabeth, she took part in the British Fleet Review and took to sea on the Royal Yacht HMY Victoria and Albert.

Chris added: “Having Her Majesty as Royal Patron, alongside the support of her husband HRH The Duke of Edinburgh as former RYA President and her daughter The Princess Royal as our current President, has undoubtedly helped us to raise awareness of our aims to increase participation

“In 1948, Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh were listed as new members of the RYA (known then as the Yacht Racing Association),” said the RYA in a statement.

The organisation became the RYA in 1952 when Sir Ralph Gore, then President, spoke of ‘Her Majesty’s recent command that the name of the Association will in future be the Royal Yachting Association.’“Itwasan honour for the RYA to host Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh on a trip to Cowes in 2012, where they were introduced to a number of young OnBoard sailors who were enjoying the opportunity to try sailing and windsurfing.”

8 Britannia arrives back in the UK in 1954 The yacht is now a floating museum and events venue.Among other notable yachts was Bluebottle that was presented to Her Majesty and Prince Philip in 1948 as a wedding present from the Island Sailing Club of Cowes. The craft remains the only British Dragon to have won an Olympic medal.

The Queen was also patron to many marine organisations including the Royal Yachting Association (RYA).

Constructed over a four-year period with the help of more than 60 craftsmen, Gloriana was the first such royal barge to be built in 100 years at a cost of £1m.

“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II dedicated 70 years as patron of the RNLI, engaging with and recognising the efforts of thousands of our people,” said chief executive Mark Dowie.

“BH Fabrications was very proud to have played a part of this historic vessel’s manufacture,” said MD Chris Clayton.

In 2009, it was the turn of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, when the Royal party met silver medallist Chris Draper and Olympic hopefuls in training, including Peter Greenhalgh, Andrea Brewster, Alison Young, Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes, as well as local people who were learning to sail as part of WPNSA’s Chesil Trust programme.

Her final official engagement on behalf of the RNLI was on 17 May 2013, where a plaque was unveiled at St Ives Lifeboat Station in Cornwall with the volunteer lifeboat crew and fundraisers.

Also in 2012 was the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, with the Queen and other members of the Royal Family leading a flotilla of 1,000 boats along the Thames, on board the Chartwell and the launch of the Royal Barge Gloriana.

And Tom concluded: “Truly the end of an era, the likes of which we’ll not see again. Thank-you Ma’am.”

And in 1993 the Queen officially launched the new £165m Hartlepool Marina, coming ashore on board a Royal barge. As the local newspaper wrote at the time: “There was a real feel good factor around Hartlepool that summer. It felt like a town on the up.”

“Our company was immensely honoured to win a Queen’s Award in 2009 and some of us were fortunate enough to have just a very few minutes conversation with her late Majesty,” said Tom.

“We place on record our sincere thanks for Her Majesty’s unwavering commitment to saving lives at Duringsea.” her reign, the Queen also had a long involvement with Britain’s waterways and her visits to Britain’s canals were a highlight for many.

Official openings included unveiling the Kelpies in Scotland in 2017 together with the Forth and Clyde Extension - the Queen Elizabeth II Canal - a new section linking the existing navigation to the Firth of Forth.

“All the staff at Bucklers Hard Boatyard Services including BH Fabrications and BH Boat Sales pay tribute to the enduring legacy of a remarkable modern-day monarch who became the bridge from old times to new in a tireless and seamless manner.”Overthe last 70 years, the Queen has honoured many individuals in the marine industry with Queen’s Honours and many companies have received Queen’s Awards including Scanstrut that won a Queen’s Award in 2009.

One project currently being worked on started six years’ ago and is being carried out in-house with a separate team including engineers with experience from Tesla and the Jaguar i-Pace electric platform.

The motor is IP67 waterproof and has an integrated driver.

“The benefit is that in case of such a mechanical overload of the gears, the fins cannot get stuck in an awkward position making the boat difficult

8 Sleipner is looking at the energy efficiency of its products

Sea trials began in May 2022 and the first production boats are expected to be fitted with the stabilisers in 2023.

The system features ‘trim command curve’, a handy preset which automatically sets the boat to the optimal running angle at any given speed whilst its automatic heeling level adjustment and list control keep the deck level during turns and regardless of uneven or moving weight distribution.Deploying at a rate of 300 mm per second, the blades require just 7 to 10 amps for operation. Seakeeper Ride is available in three blade sizes –the 450, 525 and 600 – for boats up to 35ft and is suitable for both newbuilds and retrofits.

“We’re looking at the total energy efficiency of our own and adjacent electrical consumers onboard,” said Marius Torjusen, chief commercial officer of the Sleipner Group.

The increase is being partly put down to boat owners looking for ways of reducing their fuel costs due to the significant increases in fuel prices this“Oneyear.way to reduce fuel consumption is by fitting trim tabs, which can enable the boat to be driven more efficiently by improving the ‘attitude’ of the boat and easily balancing out changes in loading and weight distribution, leading to reduced engine speed and hence fuel consumption,” explained Andy Scott, MCIAlongdirector.with a rise in demand from the smaller craft sector, Bennett has also supplied its Classic line and Premier lines to long standing customer, Princess Yachts, for some of the new models being shown at this year’s Southampton International Boat Show.

Dockmate Red is the latest system from Dockmate.

The project is currently in its second year with testing being carried out on a demonstrator 8m ProZero boat from Danish shipyard and boatbuilder Tuco Marine and results showing a reduction of roll by more than a factor of two.

Danish maritime tech startup, Dacoma, has invented an intelligent air-filled swing keel that increases seakeeping, crane capacity and reduces roll.

Winnerride.ofa 2021 IBEX Innovation Award, the Hydrofin is the brainchild of founder Jason Minor, a lifetime boater who came up with the idea whilst on an offshore fishing trip.

It is available as a single+ or twin+ system allowing one or two engines to be controlled.Thesystem comes with a receiver and wireless charging pad with the receiver translating the commands given through the remote and relays them to a boat’s controls.

The budget system has been paired down with special features such as Throttle+, SoftDocking and Engine Trick not available on the units.

“We received great feedback from our stakeholders,” added Arnd. “I will not say that the interest from the leisure segment surprises us, because the technology stabilises even at zero speed, which is a much-needed feature in this segment.”

“For example, a 202 Misty Harbor 2585 model with a single 150 Mercury engine went from a top speed of 31.5mph to 37.5mph – a 19% increase on a boat that weighs 2,300 pounds empty.”
