DISTRIBUTOR ROUND-UP

Around 80 jobs at Sunseeker International are set to be transferred to DHL Supply Chain. The boatbuilder is in advanced negotiations with DHL to provide logistics services, managing all in-bound freight movements, as well as goods receiving, stores, kitting, shipyard material movements and the line-feed of production parts. DHL will also implement a programme of transformational improvements and accelerated digitalisation to support the company's future growth plans. Under the transformation programme, Sunseeker is proposing to transfer the staff from its warehouse and logistics functions under TUPE regulations in order to protect employees' employment rights. “Our supply chain is a critical function given the value and

volume that we manage on a daily basis," said Michael Straughan, chief operating officer at Sunseeker. "On conclusion of the negotiations, our colleagues will be joining a leading global brand in the logistics industry and will remain key to the ongoing success of our complex supply chain. This is not only good news for Sunseeker but for the wider Poole community too.” Earlier this year Sunseeker reported figures showing a £5.5m growth in profit as well as a focus on larger yachts with a new superyacht division and major development programme which sees the launch of the new 133 superyacht.

PROFILE

ALMOST 27,000 VISITORS TO METSTRADE Once again, METSTRADE attracted a record number of exhibitors and visitors exploring the latest issues to affect the leisure marine sector, from sustainability, cybersecurity and digitalisation to international trade. The show registered 26,984 visits by 17,792 unique visitors from 115 nationalities, 1,670 exhibitors from 53 countries represented by 7,297 stand personal. Of these, there were 271 new exhibitors from 36 countries. One of the key themes of the show was sustainability with highlights including the E-nnovation Stage with dedicated electric and hybrid information sessions, the Construction in Process Stage and the I-nnovation Stage. Three expert panel discussions on the disposal and recycling of boats, life cycle assessment and ocean conservation were hosted and the Material District presentation was dedicated to biobased and recycled raw materials.

Other highlights included the Young Professionals Club Lounge and the new Speakers Corner. “At all levels of the leisure marine sector people are clearly taking ownership of the need to make things better with respect to the environment,” said Irene Dros, maritime director of METSTRADE. “They are tackling the issue from the heart as well as financially, embracing transformation in our industry not just in theory but very much in practice. There is a continuous conversation between all stakeholders that is already leading to revolutionary developments.” The show also included congress and content programmes with education seminars by the National Marine Electronics Association, the Superyacht Forum, a two-day marina design training programme by PIANC RecCom, and a series of sessions and showcases by the Global Marina Institute.

QUO AT DAME

We don’t care but we do

METSTRADE Yet again, it’s been a busy month in the marine industry. For many, METSTRADE dominated November. As usual the show was a hotbed of news, rumours and gossip, with British Marine again receiving its fair share. Will the organisation move its headquarters to Southampton? What will happen to the Egham offices? Were there fewer British exhibitors in Hall 3 and if so, why when the show again had record numbers of exhibitors? Is a new networking organisation open to everyone in the marine industry a good idea? It’s clear BM is looking at some of the issues that are affecting its members, from the environment to maintaining a flow of skilled people into the marine industry to supporting and promoting regional shows but that doesn’t stop dissatisfied members from having their say. As one exhibitor pointed out ‘we don’t care, but we do, as they’re supposed to be representing the industry’. On the bright side, as usual there was generally a great buzz to the show and many smiling faces, something the industry definitely needs. Yet again, the idea of the show expanding to four days was talked about – I understand this was last trialled in the 90s so maybe it’s time to try it again? I’m sure I wasn’t the only person to run out of time and not see everyone I wanted to see. GENERIC For many the year has been ‘up and down’ with the uncertainty around the B word not helping. Distributors have been adding to the number of brands they offer in an attempt to increase revenue, however ensuring that relevant products are offered – both in terms of user expectations and cost - is always key. This, together with giving the best possible customer service that is unfortunately often lacking (and not just in the marine industry). It’s all very well sending a generic follow-up email to contacts made at a show, but it’s usually best to tailor a message. I’ve already received several of these said emails reminding me that I can contact the company to buy their products or services. What would have been more use to me is for the sales person in question to actually read my business card, remember the conversation I had with them and send over their company news…

I was saddened to hear of Tony Johns’ retirement from the secretariat role at British Marine Electrical and Electronics Association. Tony was first elected to the role in March 1994 and while at the age of 87, he admits he is no spring chicken, his departure was still unexpected. He has always been very supportive and a great help to me and to Boating Business and I wish him all the best in his retirement – I’m sure he will make the most of the extra time available he now has.

The DAME Design Award 2019 has been won by U SAFE for its remote control, autopropelled life-saving ring. The jury found the U SAFE to be a perfect example of how accepted norms for products can be examined and improved by innovative design efforts. Chair of the jury, Birgit Schnasse, stressed how influential design is. "It is critical that marine companies focus on design, in all its aspects, to ensure that consumer expectations are met when they go boating," she said. "We also need smart design to address important

issues like production efficiency, environmental impact improvement and greater integration." BEST OF BRITISH Creativity from UK companies dominated the awards this year with British designed and manufactured products receiving a third of the accolades. Innovations from Raymarine UK, Lumishore, Marlow Ropes, Scanstrut and Dometic received special mentions, whilst category winners included Lignia Wood Company, Garmin Europe and Navico.

Lignia Yacht beat its rivals to be named the winner of the 'marina equipment, boatyard equipment and boat construction tools and materials' category whilst Garmin Europe's GPSMAP 86i took the top spot in the 'marine electronics & marine related software' category. In the 'machinery, propulsion, mechanical and electrical systems and fittings' category, the top prize was shared by Garmin Europe and Navico for their trolling motors.

FESTIVAL OF WATER MARKS 75 YEARS OF IWA The Inland Waterways Association will begin its 75th anniversary celebrations next year with a Festival of Water on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal. The festival, held over the August bank holiday weekend in 2020, is expected to be one of the highlights of the 75th anniversary celebrations. It will be held in Perdiswell Park in Worcester, with visiting boats moored along the

banks of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal. “The Worcester & Birmingham Canal played an important role in the history of IWA and we think it is a very fitting place to celebrate the start of our 75th anniversary year,” explained Jane Elwell, chair of events committee at IWA. “Our Festival of Water at Perdiswell Park will not only look back at the past 75 years but also towards the future of the waterways.” In August 1945, Robert

Aickman and Tom Rolt met on the canal at Tardebigge, Worcestershire, to discuss the need for an organisation to speak for the inland waterways of the UK. Plans for IWA were developed and six months later, in early 1946, the IWA was officially formed. Alongside boats, there will be entertainment including music, food, drink, children's activities, fairground rides and a chance to learn more about the benefits of the waterways across the country.

ACTION URGED ON HIDDEN BOAT DEFECTS The International Institute of Marine Surveying has written an open letter to the worldwide yacht and boat manufacturing industry to stimulate debate on the subject of hidden defects in the sector. "All manufacturers have a duty of care to their customers and end users to manufacture a safe product, which meets recognised quality criteria and international standards," write Geoff Waddington and Mike Schwarz. "Common sense must prevail; for example, the life expectancy and indeed the suitability of a product is to a degree dependent on its use. However certain models of cars and domestic appliances are often recalled by manufacturers due to latent defects which have subsequently come to light following production and placement on the market.

"If a washing machine or tumble dryer overheats, it can be switched off, but if the rudder breaks or the keel falls off a yacht in mid Atlantic, there is little one can do. Lives are therefore put in danger and at risk. Arguably, the only other industry which has similar risks

associated with it is the aeronautical industry, where mechanical failure often leads tragically to loss of life, but water craft are not subjected to annual vehicle MOT inspections or CAA inspections. "Some marine industry manufacturers take their responsibilities seriously. As soon as a latent defect comes to light, they inform the purchasers. Others, however, deem it acceptable to wait for individual purchasers to bring each example of a defect to their attention before taking individual action - in effect a damage limitation attitude and

approach, which is not good enough when the safety of life is potentially being put at risk. "What the institute would like to see more than anything else is the worldwide yacht and boat manufacturing industry coming together to act responsibly at all times in the way it treats latent defects with their products, those which they are either already aware of or are subsequently brought to their attention later by users." This is a redacted version of the open letter written on behalf of the IIMS by Geoff Waddington and Mike Schwarz.

THRILLED British Marine Scotland's co-chair, Simon Limb, said the figures illustrate that Scotland continues to thrive as a hub for successful marine businesses. "We are thrilled members see the marine tourism strategy as a valuable tool and that it has been successful in supporting growth and transforming the profile and recognition of marine tourism in Scotland,” he said. Brian Meerloo, industry pioneer and co-founder of the Cobramold boatbuilding brand, has died. His 30-year career included running the Cobramold brand and producing the popular Leisure 17 trailer sailer. Born in 1935, Brian entered the business world with an enthusiasm for entrepreneurship after leaving school and studying fibreglass moulding techniques. By 1959, he had set up Cobramold with four other founding directors and by 1964 the company had moved into boatbuilding and produced the revolutionary 39ft Caribbean Norfolk Broads Cruiser. FAMILY OWNED BOATYARD IS SOLD Rossiter Yachts boatyard has been sold after being in family ownership for 75 years. The Christchurch based yard is known for designing and building traditionally styled wood and fiberglass dinghies and yachts including Shelducks, Herons, Pintails and Curlews. The business - formerly owned by Charlie Rossiter who is retiring - operates more than 100 moorings and has slipways, a 14-ton crane and two boatbuilding sheds equipped for repair and boatbuilding. Against competition from both national marina operators and local investors, a Lymington based family run business was the successful purchaser. and built bigger yachts; the L20, L22, L23/23SL, L27 and finally the L29. By 1979 Cobramold was exporting yachts all over Europe and a subsidiary company, 'Leisure GMBH', was established in Germany.

However, due to economic pressures coupled with fraud at the German subsidiary, Cobramold collapsed in 1979/80. Tom Winyard of Brinecraft took over the production of the L17 and L23 which continued through the 1980's. From 1967 to 1994, at least 3,400 Leisure 17 and 17SL's were produced. Consequently, the Leisure 17 is believed to be the most successful 17ft trailer sailer ever built in the UK. Brian continued sailing after the collapse of Cobramold, but now as an owner, in his favourite yacht, the L23SL. Brian sailed from Rice and Coles yard at Burnham on Crouch along the East and South coast until ill health forced the sale of his boat, Last Minette.

INEOS TEAM UK has been working with Spinlock since 2014 with the Cowes-based supplier trialling different materials, choosing fabric with maximum performance at minimal weight. Spinlock's personal flotation device protects the spine using Skydex which is built into a greater area of the back panelling, giving protection to the motorcycle crash protection standard and passing the 50N standard for flotation. Because the risk of capsizing is greater with the AC75, the vests also now incorporate harness technology.

WASHINGTON POST JIM NOLAN runs US based James Nolan Associates Attracting more people into boating has been a priority for our industry for some time now. The emergence of the Millennials as the largest spending group in the US makes them a very important focus group. Following the recent Grow Boating Marketing Summit, Boating Business reached out to Carl Blackwell, president, Grow Boating and asked him if there were any specific initiatives or activities planned or underway to attract Millennials. Here is a summary of what he had to say: Discover Boating is focused on reaching the boater of the future. While the campaign's marketing efforts reach potential boaters of all ages, the sweet spot is the Xennial generation, a crosssection of older Millennials and younger Gen Xers. These younger adults crave experiences, which, fortunately boating offers. Look for an increased emphasis on video across all Discover Boating marketing platforms in the year ahead DiscoverBoating.com, YouTube, social media and influencer partnerships wherever the future boater is consuming media. Carl points out that we're seeing younger generations become boaters in different ways than in years past. These include boat clubs, peer-to-peer rentals and other forms of boating 'sharing' as a way to experience boating if they are not yet ready to buy a boat. This has built new opportunities which our industry is already taking advantage of.

We relocated to Devon as a family ten years' ago in a conscious bid to spend more time on the water. That coupled with my husband's long-standing credentials in the chemical industry and my background in design led to us developing August Race products. Best advice I've ever received... Work in a focussed way. I make a 'to do' list and then make another one and another ad infinitum. I can be rather sporadic in my tasks so this helps pin it all down and keep the plates spinning. EXTREME DURABILITY Glynn added: "At such extreme limits, high speed capsizing can be frequent so our systems need extreme durability and waterproofing. The Euro-CMRT angle sensors specified by the engineers at Ixthus Instrumentation have proven ideal for these conditions and their miniature design helps keep the TruSail's size and weight to a minimum." TRADE WARS AND ENVIRONMENT FOCUS MARKETING CHRIS JONES is founder of the Knot Agency

Strengthening the EU single market, the EU-US trade war and environmental challenges were on the agenda when the European Boating Industry (EBI) celebrated its ten year anniversary. Members of the European Parliament, the European Commission and leaders of the European recreational boating sector gathered in Brussels to celebrate the EBI's founding in 2009 and to set a vision for the next decade. Speaking at the event, EBI president, Jean-Pierre Goudant, said, “Our anniversary is a great time to look back at EBI's achievements and celebrate ten years of advocacy for our sector. Our members, many of them SMEs, provide tens of thousands of jobs and are often the backbone of local communities and economies." Tiziana Beghin MEP opened the event with an

address which highlighted the positive impact of the recreational boating industry, as well as its relevance for the EU institutions. “The recreational boating industry is a key economic activity and employer for many regions across Europe. It is crucial for us as policymakers to support this development and ensure that European companies can continue to grow by

removing tariffs and trade barriers,” she said. DE-ESCALATION Topics taking centre stage were the de-escalation of the EU-US trade war, strengthening the EU's single market for the boating industry, harmonisation of qualifications to address skills and workforce shortages, the circular economy and the

EXPANSION SEES PME RELOCATE A family-owned firm supplying marine engines nationwide has moved from Dorset to Plymouth in order to expand and create jobs. PME Group, the main UK importer and service centre for MAN diesel marine engines, has relocated to an 8,500 sq ft base at Plympton and taken on four new members of staff. The new premises were opened with a fanfare, including a Germanic-style 'oompah' band. “We recognised Plymouth is a really good area for us,” said commercial director, Jade Chalk. “There are some significant businesses in the area, we support people like Princess Yachts and Babcock." LOCAL JOBS “We will employ local people and bring in marine engineering skills. We have ten staff in Plymouth, including four new members and we are expecting to

create further jobs and take on engineering apprentices, a minimum of one apprentice this year and two or three staff in the next 18 months,” she added. MAIN SERVICE SUPPORT PME was founded in 1966 as Pilkington Marine Engineering. In the 1990s it became a limited company and was made a main service support centre for MAN engines. It is now run by J ade, her husband Peter Chalk and son Ben. Today PME specialises solely in MAN products and has dealerships in Southampton, Poole, Great Yarmouth, Cheshire, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. Customers include the RNLI, HM Customs and Excise, Sunseeker International, Princess Yachts, Fairline Boats, the MoD, several pilot authorities and wind farm vessel builders and operators.

development of an environmentally friendly industry. Following the event, EBI secretary-general, Philip Easthill, said the EBI is committed to strengthening its work with EU institutions, members and stakeholders in order to contribute to common challenges at European level.

Consumer confidence has been on a downward trajectory and is currently at a six-year low with fears over job security, worldwide trade tensions and the continuing political challenge we find ourselves in, weighing on public sentiment. With a large proportion of leisure marine spend being relatively discretionary, to make the decision to batten down the hatches and take a defensive business approach is understandable. However, I believe you should see uncertainty as an opportunity and instead take a proactive attitude. Take advantage of your competitor's retrenchment and boost your market share. Our market place is not going to stop spending, people are just going to consider their purchases far more carefully. Here are some ideas. 5 Continue advertising to make the most of less crowded channels, enabling your brand proposition to stand out and in the process increasing perceived brand quality. 5 Highlight the value of your product to the boat owner and why they cannot afford to put off buying it on your website, in press releases and advertising. 5 Reinforce the reasons to choose your brand over others and also clearly justify any price premiums. 5 Update your in-store POS, converting purchases as the final decision is being made. 5 Ensure you use clear 'calls to action' to be the voice that consumers hear. 5 Exhibit at regional shows around the UK to engage directly with consumers. 5 Get creative with your promotional ideas to stand out.

From 1 April 2020, a 2.5% 'prompt payment' discount (reduced from 5%) will apply for those who pay on time and in full.

25 years life The Canal & River Trust is investing around £800,000 across the East Midlands to replace a number of handcrafted lock gates and carry out repairs to waterway structures. The lock gates weigh several tonnes and typically last around 25 years.

Repair programme Phase Two of the lock gate replacement works at Fort Augustus are due to be completed by Spring 2020, part of a critical repair programme by Scottish Canals. The completion of Phase One works at Fort Augustus to replace lock gates two and strengthen lock gates three and four took place last winter and the canal reopened to navigation in April 2019. CALL FOR MANDATORY KEEL GUIDANCE A major accident has prompted a call to require manufacturers provide guidance on the inspection and maintenance of keels fitted to their craft. Following the investigation of the keel failure and capsize of Comar Yachts' Comar Comet 45 Tyger of London, off Punta Rasca, Tenerife in December 2017, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) recommended in its accident report that British Marine propose changes to the International Standards Organisation (ISO), to require, rather than recommend, this guidance. The recommendation was initially made in June 2018 and followed the initial MAIB investigation. The investigation found that the failure of the keel structure caused the loss

of the keel and led to the 13.77m yacht capsizing. MANUFACTURING PROBLEM Technical inspection of the keel plate, recovered with the hull, revealed that the keel had not been manufactured in accordance with the designer's drawings. Furthermore, the unusual keel design meant that the condition of the weakest part of the keel structure could not be monitored or inspected as it was hidden within the external lead casting, stated the report. The MAIB has issued a safety bulletin advising owners of yachts fitted with similar keels to note that due to its design, the condition and tightness of the keel bolts do not indicate the true condition of the keel. It said owners should arrange for an out of

water inspection by a suitably qualified surveyor if a yacht is damaged, grounded or if there is any doubt as to the condition of the keel. MAIB's keel guidance recommendation was backed by Andrew Moll, chief inspector of marine accidents. On publication of the report last month, he said: “The failure of Tyger of London's keel is a timely reminder that a yacht's keel is a safety critical item,

and it should be surveyed and inspected regularly with this in mind.” The incident, involved Tyger of London heeling to starboard, capsizing and inverting. The crew were able to release their lifelines and fall into the water where their lifejackets automatically inflated. They were rescued by another yacht, St Barbara V, whose skipper raised the alarm. The EPIRB and liferaft were not rigged to float-free and the crew did not have time to release and operate them before the yacht capsized. The reported stated that multiple actions have been taken by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and BM to improve guidance on keel inspection and the stowage of lifesaving appliances.

BURSARIES FOR APPRENTICESHIPS

Photo: The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights

The Shipwright's Apprenticeship Scheme is helping employers train the next generation of shipbuilders. Run by The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights in partnership with British Marine and Lloyd's Register the scheme underwrites the first year of a three or four year apprentice's wages providing around £9,500 in funding. Apprenticeship schemes hark back to the founding principles of the Shipwrights Company and 96% of businesses report benefits from their apprentice. Sarah Curtis of Harry King and Sons endorsed the scheme. “Thank you so much for all the support over the last year, not sure quite how we would

have managed without the financial help. We are really pleased with our apprentice's progress and am glad we opted for the scheme,” she said. New apprenticeship

NEW SAFE WATER GUIDANCE New Industry Best Practice guidance on the safe operation of water facilities has been issued to the marine industry - both inland and coastal. The guidance has been created by both water suppliers and experts from the marine industry with the aim of having safe and practical operations in both the commercial and recreational sectors including marinas, boatyards, sailing centres, canals and other inland waterways. It will offer help and guidance on the security surrounding the safety of water supplies and how that water is used, including the minimum level of backflow protection required in-line with effective control measures. The document advises clubs on the best practice of regular activities such as the rinsing of dinghies and filling of water tanks. Key elements also include the correct labelling of water points and allocating designated areas for boat maintenance which involves the use of water. The intended outcome is to enable water undertakers

standards have been developed in marine engineering, boatbuilding and boatyard operative. Fresh standards in marine electrician are also under development. These new standards are all set at level 3 which is equivalent to two 'A' levels. Finley Rodwell, apprentice

with Marcus Lewis Boatbuilder in Cornwall, spoke of his experiences. “I never thought I would get into wooden boat building but it has taught me much more than I thought - they are all skills I will be able to use in my future,” he said. “I hope the next three years will teach me more valuable knowledge I will need in the future.” As well as funding, the scheme provides support to employers by helping with the application process, making referrals to a suitable training provider, advising on managing an apprenticeship programme and providing guidance on apprenticeship standards. The bursaries support any shipbuilder, repair yard, refit yard, service agent or supply chain manufacturer keen to invest in the future of shipbuilding and its associated trades.

The guidance has been put together by Industry Specialist Consulting Group consisting of representatives from water undertakers, together with industry experts from British Marine, the RYA, The Yacht Harbour Association, RNLI and The Canal & River Trust. The group aims to ensure that current and future operations are safer, more efficient and give a higher and consistent safety standard across a wide range of marine operations. So far Anglian Water, Hyfran Duffyd, Jersey Water, Severn Trent Water and Southern Water all accept the guidance.

BRIEFS Full-size replica A campaign to raise £1m to reconstruct the Sutton Hoo Ship has received the backing of a British Museum lead curator. Gareth Williams, who specialises in Anglo-Saxon and Viking coinage, is supporting the ‘Make Ship Happen’ campaign that has been launched by the Sutton Hoo Ship's Company to help fund the project. All that was left of the 90ft royal ship that was buried with gold 13 centuries ago were markings in the sand but It is hoped that the ghost ship can be bought to life through the use of digital plans and CGI images. It is anticipated the vessel will take two years to build at the site of the former Whisstocks Boatyard in Woodbridge. Once complete the full-size replica is set to be used as a movable educational exhibition.

BUSINESSMATTERS ADAM BERNSTEIN: Freelance Journalist

According to HMRC's Annual Report and Accounts for 2018-19, the tax authority brought in £627.9 billion in tax revenue for the government during the period covered by the report. More importantly and of interest to taxpayers with a mind to play fast and loose with the tax rules, HMRC protected its revenues to the tune of £34.1bn and specifically through litigation activity, to the value of £17.5 billion. Checks and investigations are a key part of HMRC's armoury. Indeed, investigations and penalties are, by definition, the backbone of any state-run organisation for without a punitive regime there would be minimal compliance. HMRC tax investigations are, says the FSB, timeconsuming and stressful. They can last 16 months on average and cost from £5,000 in accountancy fees plus management time and penalties if they find anything wrong. Fee protection insurance can cover the cost of an HMRC investigation.

TAX INVESTIGATIONS: WHY HMRC MIGHT INVESTIGATE A BUSINESS Surprisingly, most investigations can be avoided easily: AVOID SIMPLE MISTAKES One small error, especially if voluntarily corrected by the taxpayer, is not going to raise the hackles of an investigator. But a series of regular mistakes will suggest to HMRC that the taxpayer is either keeping poor records or is unable to follow processes set down by law. It may also suggest that the taxpayer is attempting to commit fraud or evade tax. BE CONSISTENT Some businesses, but not many, will see wildly fluctuating figures over a period of time. However, most will see peaks and troughs over time. But if one year the profits are reported at, say, £200,000 but the following at £20,000, HMRC would be within its rights to ask why there's such a variation. To forestall the chance of an investigation,

the taxpayer would be advised to tell HMRC via the notes box in the tax return why profits fell so dramatically. NOTE SECTOR NORMS With HMRC having a long and storied history, it's obvious that it's going to have statistics on what the average business in any given sector should be declaring in terms of expenses and profit. Clearly, if the business's declared numbers are well off the mark of the sector norm then HMRC might seek answers via an investigation.

EARN MORE THAN STAFF Management and owners should be earning more than those that they employ. While the superrich can afford to give away shares or work for a token £1, the majority in business cannot so to declare an almost nonexistent income is likely to lead to interest from HMRC; it will suspect that some form of tax avoidance scheme is being employed. Taxpayers should aim to not rock the boat; they should maintain the employment hierarchy which is best illustrated by expected pay structures.

DON'T HIDE INCOME HMRC doesn't just look at taxpayers or businesses in isolation, it's actively comparing and linking records of anyone via its Connect database that's linked to taxpayers too. Any temptation to 'forget' payments or receipts should be resisted as transaction records, by definition, have two sides - payer and payee. Whether a customer, supplier or bank, HMRC can trace these through. HMRC does, from time to time, receive information about dishonest taxpayers breaking the law. While it hasn't the resources to investigate everything it is told, situations considered serious will merit attention. IN SUMMARY Using just a modicum of common sense is key to having inspectors give a taxpayer the benefit of the doubt. But ultimately, complying with the law is the safest way to avoid an investigation.

HMRC AUTO ENROLS BUSINESSES INTO SCHEME HMRC has automatically registered 95,000 businesses for its simplified import procedures scheme, known as Transitional Simplified Procedures (TSP), to keep trade flowing and minimise the potential for disruption after Brexit. If the UK leaves the EU without a deal on 31 January 2020, the TSP scheme will become active. The scheme will simplify import procedures by permitting most traders up to six months to pay import duties and submit customs declarations after importing goods from the EU. The TSP scheme aims to make importing much simpler, particularly for

businesses that have little experience of dealing with the customs process. Businesses that have been automatically registered will receive a letter from HMRC with further details of their TSP registration and the steps required to ensure they are ready for 31 January 2020. Employers unaware of government's post-Brexit immigration plans The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has urged the government to increase the flexibility and userfriendliness of future immigration policies, as new research shows many employers are not prepared

for EU worker restrictions. The CIPD has published a report in which it highlights a lack of awareness of government proposals among most employers, amplified by a lack of planning and the ongoing political uncertainty. The CIPD is urging the government to implement a two-year visa system for unskilled workers and lower the £30,000 minimum salary threshold for jobs on the shortage occupation list. The CIPD found that 58% of employers said they knew nothing about the government's white paper on immigration. Only 7% said they knew a great deal while just 35% said they knew a little.

Statistics show UK exports to non-EU countries have risen by 4.2% The Department for International Trade (DIT) announced that figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that there is a greater overall demand for UK exports to non-EU countries. The most recent ONS figures show that

exports to countries outside of the EU have increased by 4.2%, compared to a rise of 1.6% for EU member countries. The growth in exports to non-EU countries is driven mainly by major non-EU trading partners, including the US and China, with total trade with the US surpassing £200bn for the first time.

If the UK leaves the EU without a deal on 31 January 2020, the TSP scheme will become active. The scheme will simplify import procedures by permitting most traders up to six months to pay import duties and submit customs declarations after importing goods from the EU

For CA Clase, one of the more important advances in 2019 has been the rise of 4G. “4G has fantastic potential for providing essential communication, route planning, logging ship data or to provide entertainment onboard your vessel,” explained CA Clase's Paul Childs. “Until now it has been complicated with which device to choose, which further becomes a minefield when knowing which SIM card to provide; that's before you have to delve into APN settings and other complicated 'background settings' that are essential to making the device work.” After providing the hardware for several years, CA Clase recognised users' frustration, so has formed close links with providers Vodafone, EE and O2 and is now able to provide a complete solution offering both hardware and data. Another benefit, explained Paul, is the SIMs are commercial grade priority SIM cards, which give users priority on the network and data when normal SIM cards or phones may struggle. “We tested this at Glastonbury Festival and could get online, while others could not make phone calls or send texts,” he said. Thirty day rolling contracts are available allowing customers to tailor a plan to their needs. The SatFi 4G router works globally. One phone call covers you for any hardware or data questions. Handling both the data and hardware ensures we can get to the bottom of your query quickly and react accordingly.

Another addition is the BOW18024D bow thruster providing 180 kgf on a 24V power supply. New window additions for 2019 include the ultra-slim PL series portlights and the FGHF series ventilation hatches with no protruding components for reduced wind noise and easy cleaning. The HMB 2.0 series roller blind and fly screen combination is available with a new design to maximise vision through the hatch.

Ocean Safety distributes and manufactures a large range of safety and survival products. Most recently the company has been appointed UK and Ireland distributor of the Norwaybased Hansen brand of emergency immersion suits, work suits and thermal protection suits for use in harsh environments and cold-water areas. An addition to one of Ocean Safety's longstanding worldwide distribution brands, Aquaspec, that makes some of the world's smallest lifejacket lights, is a new range of high performing and efficient LED lifejacket and liferaft lights, lithium lifebuoy light, alkaline lifebuoy light and Morse signal torch. DEBUT New technologies have brought breakthroughs to

the company's own in-house manufactured products. The Jon Buoy Glo Lite range, which debuted at METSTRADE, uses innovative retro-reflective technology that significantly enhances the visibility of the hi-vis fabric, making it highly reflective and increasing

perception during dark conditions. By aiding location, time in the water is reduced before casualty recovery. The new range will be available as an addition to the current standard Jon Buoy range, increasing the choice available to customers between high-vis

or ultra-high night time vis products. Jon Buoy Glo Lite products include the Jon Buoy Recovery Module, Jon Buoy Danbuoy, Jon Buoy Inflatable Horseshoe and Jon Buoy Inflatable Rescue Sling.

BAINBRIDGE MARINE PRODUCT ROUND UP Morbern Europe joined Bainbridge's offerings in March when the distributor took on the company's range of marine cover fabrics. “Bainbridge’s e-shop, trade counter and dedicated sales team are real assets for manufacturers such as Morbern, looking to grow their brand and market share in the UK and beyond," said Carine Equeter, Morbern Europe's sales and marketing director. In June, Bainbridge entered into partnership with Kingfisher Yacht Ropes, a move described by Bainbridge's MD, Andrew Smith, as an 'opportunity to offer both breadth of choice and quality of product'. Another technical partnership saw Bainbridge join forces with Rock Oil to

launch a revitalised marine product range of a basic grease through to a high specification race lubricant. Germany-based Sprenger has also joined the Bainbridge product family, helping to expand the distributor's range of entry level products. Bainbridge has also launched a range of tenders under the AquaMarine brand which it acquired in 2011 and entered into collaboration with Albin Pump Marine that sees Bainbridge offering the full product range including a manual compact toilet.

The Insight Series incorporates SuperSmart BMS to maximise battery performance, eliminating the need for an external master BMS or any additional hardware. Performance in each battery is optimised when multiple batteries are connected in parallel, providing maximum capacity and life. “The new Insight Series is a real game-changing technology for lithium battery customers, powering deep cycle applications with maximum battery performance and capacity

and no risk of over-heating,” explained Henry James, DBS Leoch MD. The Insight Series also features intelligent cooling, using a passive heat management system to remove heat from inside the battery during conditions of high discharge and recharge currents.

The batteries come in GC2 size 12-volt, 24-volt and 48-volt configurations; up to 16 batteries can be used in parallel. Each battery delivers 1.536Kw of energy and each is equipped with LiFePO4 chemistry.

propellers. The Boomerang four-bladed Max-Prop propeller has evolved from the five-bladed model and eliminates the need for a shaft brake ensuring that boat owners with both electric controls and hydraulic gear boxes are still able to feather the propeller. Seaview Progress has also been appointed UK dealer for Flexofold folding propellers, distributing the company's range of two, three or four-bladed propellers from 12 - 26in. Also available from Seaview Progress is KiwiGrip's repackaged antislip paint. Now produced in pouches, there is less waste, easier storage and easier transportation. The new boxes are available in one or four litre sizes with application roller and tips. Finally the company has updated one of its own products, with the launch of a new mount for FLIR M300 cameras.

FOCUS ON ELECTRIC DRIVE In its 25th year, Fischer Panda UK has responded to customer demand for environmentally friendly, cost-effective and efficient power and propulsion solutions with an increased focus on electric and hybrid drive systems. Its expanded portfolio now includes a new 100kW electric motor as an additional option for the Fischer Panda EasyBox high-voltage electric drive systems. The company can offer drive systems in the range from 2kW to 100kW, available with voltages ranging from 24V to 360V depending on the power requirements. It is also the UK distributor for Bellmarine electric drive systems. During 2019, Fischer Panda capitalised on its Lloyd's Register Type Approval for its latest range of variable speed i-Series generators. These generators have regulated speed with x-control and the company's patented Voltage Control System. The benefits of the i-Series generators were further endorsed with the news that Fairline has selected the 5000i Neo and 8000i generators as the cost option gensets for the new F//Line 33 express cruiser. Targeting the small boat leisure, light commercial and superyacht sectors, Fischer Panda UK's product offering continues to develop with the latest integrated mobile power solutions and smart digital switching systems by Mastervolt and CZone, Dometic air-conditioning and Sea Recovery, HRO and Village Marine watermakers. Further company developments have included the implementation of a new CRM system and the introduction of a new upgraded display trailer for improved interaction with customers at key boat shows.

The Barrus Marine Equipment Division was formed in August last year with a core product offering of Talamex chandlery range, Besto life-jackets, G-Nautics boat accessories and Stazo boat safety systems. Since then, the division has secured the distribution of more than 20 brands. These include Barton, Blue Gee, Glomex, Lowrance, Simrad and International Paint. “The carefully selected mix of brands and products is part of our continuing strategy to build an extensive portfolio of premium brands that offer the marine trade a single source of supply combined with the support of a company offering over 75-years' experience in the marine industry,” commented Ben Allen, general manager for the Marine Leisure Division. The team is supported by sales representation from SailForce.

PROFILE

SEAN LANGDON DISCOVERY YACHTS

On the Discovery Yachts website, there's a phrase for a life less ordinary - the perfect way to describe CEO Sean Langdon's career and his general ethos. He grew up in Saltash, Cornwall, learning to sail with the local sailing club and crewing on his father's cruisers. Aged 17, Sean was asked to look after an acquaintance's 35ft yacht which involved him sailing using wind power only as the petrol engine didn't work very often. He was also an engineering apprentice with the MOD, based at Plymouth dockyard and became popular with his peers who were keen to join him sailing. After completing his apprenticeship, Sean moved on from the MOD and applied/secured a Government-backed Enterprise Allowance, buying a 42ft Ferro cement boat, the cheapest hull he could find. “I spent so much time in a spare parts shop they offered me a job.” A chance meeting with some sailing school owners at the Plymouth Boat Show prompted Sean, then 22, to abandon his boat building plans to teach sailing. “I worked for a few sailing schools before joining a firm in Gosport where we also sold foreign charters to our students.” This signalled the start of a global career. “I got talking to a company in Austria with bases in Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Italy and the Caribbean, spending time in Turkey, the Caribbean and Croatia, even while the latter was at war.” BAD LUCK In 1993, Sean joined a charter agency based in Kingstonupon-Thames and while at the Southampton Boat Show he met his future wife, Kerstin. “She owned a sailing school so I joined her firm to

time there travelling all over.” In 2014, Sean was appointed sales and marketing director for Elan Yachts in Slovenia. Having put together a bid to buy Southerly Yachts, which was rejected by the board, Sean left Elan to source funding to buy Southerly himself. “I was keen to speak to boat builders and while in discussion with Discovery Yachts founder, John Chandler, it became clear if we put together the right business plan, we could attract investors and buy Southerly.”

set up the foreign charter side of the business.” They then acquired another sailing school and ran flotilla holidays in Greece (employees included the British yachtsman Alex Thomson). A decision to sell the business in 1999 preempted a period of 'bad luck'. “Prior to the agreed sale in 2000, the market crashed; we sold no courses at the London Boat Show and the 35ft catamaran we intended to display didn't turn up, as the delivery skipper had a dental appointment.” Their buyers subsequently lost their investment streams and pulled out of the sale, leaving the couple with a business to be sold off in parts. “Although these were 'dark days', in hindsight, this was one of the best things that happened to us. We learnt so much from the whole experience; it made us stronger and gave us opportunities we would never have considered.”

European sales director with US-firm Hunter (Legend yachts in the UK). In 2008, a job offer 'out of the blue' as chief operating officer for Qatar-based Alfardan Marine, prompted a move abroad. “They felt immune from the financial crash and when I arrived, the business had $56m of yachts on order and craft including Riva 85, a couple of Dominator 62s and a Dalla Pieta 56 in stock. This was an

opulent world, but not the 'real world'.” A year later, Sean, Kerstin and his youngest stepson moved to Turkey for 'some time out'. They stayed for four years and during this time, Sean took up a consultancy role with a RIB builder in China. “I visited China on three occasions, spending two or three months at a

NEW BUSINESS Initial investment and a peer to peer loan kick-started the new business in April 2017 and Southerly was added soon after in June. “We developed a new yacht, the 480, using the Southerly 47 hull as the base, extending the deck and a new interior to Discovery standards.” Its presence at the Dusseldorf Boat Show in January 2018 and a successful crowd-funding initiative signalled a growth spurt for Discovery. “We sold five off plan and are now building boat number 11.” Discovery staff numbers have grown from 35 to 120, the firm has a purpose-built admin HQ in Lymington that opened early 2019 and a factory in Marchwood, Southampton, producing the award-winning Longitude, Southerly, Bluewater, Revelation and Britannia models. A Euro and US Dollar pricing option has also been introduced, which Sean believes is vital for competing in a global market. “As an industry in the UK we should spend more time working together, promoting our work on a global platform, instead of competing against each other. There's a massive role for British Marine here." 8 Initial investment and a peer to peer loan kick-started the new business

Coatings manufacturer Hempel, has appointed Nigel Shewring as its group director of research and development. Nigel's key responsibilities include managing the overall activities in Hempel's 15 R&D centres around the world, further developing the company's product portfolio. “The world of coatings is very complex and our experts play a crucial role when it comes to sharing knowledge about both challenges and solutions in our industry,” said Steen Hoff, Hempel's acting director of operations. “Nigel will help ensure that we continue to develop both our own and our customers' understanding of the technology of coatings in the best way possible.” Nigel has more than 23 years of R&D experience in a global industrial coatings' environment. Roger Goldsmith has been appointed refit sales manager at Fox's Marina & Boatyard. After graduating in Yacht Manufacturing and Boat Yard Management from the Southampton Institute, Roger began his career with the manufacturers of WEST SYSTEM epoxy on the south coast where he was responsible for providing technical solutions for yacht builders. He returned to hands-on yachting, building a business in yacht management and repair in Phuket, Thailand. Roger co-founded the bespoke blue water cruising yacht manufacturer, Kraken Yachts in Hong Kong, where he was designer, engineer, project manager and yacht construction specialist. He has now moved back to the UK and will focus on new refit business for Fox's heading up the sales team alongside Ralph Catchpole. MDL Marinas has made a number of staff changes, including the appointment of a new sales and marketing director. A member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Tim Mayer has a wealth of senior sales experience across the leisure industry, most recently at health and fitness chain, Everyone Active. “I am delighted to be joining MDL Marinas and working in the marine side of the leisure industry,” said Tim. “I am looking forward to working alongside the marina teams to take MDL's customer experience initiatives to a whole new level, creating a service which is second to none at each and every marina in the group.”

Jim Catterall Berthon

Paul Rodgers The Inland Waterways Association

Graham Bristowe Swanwick Marina

Jim Catterall has joined Berthon as electronics manager responsible for the company's marine electrical and electronics work. Jim has worked in the marine industry for more than 20 years, specialising in marine electrics and electronics, designing complete re-wires to complex troubleshooting. In 2007, Jim started his own marine electrical company in Trinidad and built a large client base looking after onboard electrical and electronic systems, moving the business to Tortola BVI in 2016. On returning to the UK after Hurricane Irma, Jim secured a job at Raymarine becoming a product manager, but after a year concluded that the corporate life was not for him and that he wanted to get back to what he enjoys the most, working on yachts with owners. Paul Rodgers has been elected as national chairman of The Inland Waterways Association. He succeeds outgoing national chairman, Ivor Caplan who, after two years at the helm, has decided to focus on areas of particular interest including heritage, navigation and planning. Paul is chairman and founder of European payments community, Vendorcom and has a background in marketing, strategy development and community building. He first volunteered for IWA in 2014, when his wife persuaded him to go on week long canal camp with her and since then his involvement has grown. “My aim as national chairman is to continue to build on IWA's reputation, developing wellthought-out, strategic and active campaigns which will result in the regeneration of the waterways to benefit all users, influencers and stakeholders for the remainder of the 21st century - and beyond,” he said. Graham Bristowe has been appointed to the post of marina manager at Swanwick Marina. Graham previously managed a leisure complex in the Channel Islands, before joining Premier Marinas in 2003. His 16 years with the organisation has seen him manage Gosport Marina and Chichester Marina and in recent years he has been employed as general manager for Portsmouth Harbour, overseeing the operations of both Southsea and Port Solent marinas. “I am thrilled to be taken on this new challenge with Premier,” he said. “With the second phase of marina development now underway and the future land development on the horizon, this will be a truly exciting phase in the development of Swanwick Marina.” Graham is supported by duty manager Peter Pring.
