HAS COVID KILLED EVINRUDE? BRP is to discontinue production of its Evinrude E-TEC and E-TEC G2 outboard engines. The decision will impact 650 employees globally. BRP's Sturtevant, WI, facility, will be 'repurposed for new projects'. “Our outboard engines business has been greatly impacted by COVID-19, obliging us to discontinue production of our outboard motors immediately," said José Boisjoli, president and CEO of BRP. "This business segment had already been facing some challenges and the impact from the current context has forced our hand. "We will concentrate our efforts on new and innovative technologies and on the development of our boat companies, where we continue to see a lot of potential to transform the on-water experience for consumers." “Following our decision to discontinue E-TEC and E-TEC G2 outboard engines, we have signed an agreement with market leader Mercury Marine to support boat packages and continue to supply outboard engines to our boat brands.” The company will continue to supply customers and dealer network service parts and will honour manufacturer limited warranties, plus offer select programs to manage inventory. LEGISLATION The challenges that José mentions almost certainly include the rising costs of meeting ever more stringent emissions legislation. A decision was made in the 1990s to not moving to four-stroke powerheads alongside every other major outboard manufacturer - E-TEC engines are two-strokes, albeit clean and clever variants of the technology.

8 Evinrude’s USP was its ETEC clean 2-stoke technology

The various devices that Evinrude had to include in its engines to allow them to pass emissions tests were only ever going to make the engines more costly, bulkier and heavier as time went on, so there is a strong case for the argument that the pandemic has only accelerated the inevitable. Ole Evinrude, a naturalised American and emigree from Norway is widely credited as inventor of the first practical outboard motor in 1907. It's not clear from BRP's announcement whether the Evinrude name and branding are now for sale.

BWML LOSES THAMES DEVELOPMENT APPEAL British Waterways Marinas Ltd (BWML) has lost an appeal against a planning decision preventing development of Limehouse Basin Marina on the River Thames. BWML had proposed to add five pontoons, four to provide formal leisure moorings and the fifth for 24-hour visitor mooring, but planning was refused. The subsequent appeal was also rejected on the grounds that the development would harm navigation and the character and appearance of the waterspace of the marina. Other issues, namely the effect on neighbouring residents, water quality and water habitat provision were not found to be of concern. The planning inspector concluded that the proposal would noticeably reduce the spaciousness of the area which is a key 'blue open space' within London's Blue Ribbon Network, a

strategic system of waterspaces covering the Thames, its tributaries, canals, docks and other water bodies. Whilst the inspector conceded that the development would not substantially harm the appearance of the area it was nevertheless felt that the reduction in spaciousness and consequent obstruction of views would have an adverse effect. Limehouse Basin is a vital 'port of refuge' for craft from further along the tidal Thames and the Continent. The proposal would reduce 24-hour visitor mooring resulting in an annual unmet demand of several hundred vessels per year. It would also entail relocation of pump-out facilities. Taking these concerns together, the inspector concluded that the proposal is likely to contribute to congestion on the waterway and harm navigation. Only the High Court can quash the Planning Inspector's decision.

VIEWPOINT TECHNOLOGY HELPS AQUAFAX KATINA READ Editor STAY CONNECTED ❘

Are there opportunities to be found? As I write this month’s column, one word to describe the market is turbulent. As usual there are many rumours regarding the viability of businesses – manufacturers, suppliers and boatbuilders – with many redundancies being announced. Among those, Fairline Yachts has just released a statement on its planned redundancies, cutting the number of workers by 240 - more than 50% of its total staff. The boatbuilder had embarked on a recruitment drive during 2019, anticipating a buoyant market however the Covid-19 pandemic has put an end to its hopes and plans, as it has to many. We’ve also heard how Sunseeker is planning to reduce its workforce by around 25%. However, while still way down on previous figures, orders are starting to trickle in again from Britain’s boatbuilders. While most suppliers are still only on around 20% of the amount of orders they would normally expect at this time of year, it can be seen as a positive start. As the coronavirus restrictions have eased, it’s been good to see boats back on the water and owners starting to spend money again on their craft. With non-essential shops – including chandleries allowed to open again in a few days’ time, the market will hopefully continue to improve. DESIRABLE OFFERING The Government’s quarantine policy for those arriving in the UK can also be seen as an opportunity for the UK’s boating industry. Instead of Brits heading off for some Mediterranean sun for their summer holiday, now is the time for charter companies to make their offering as desirable as possible. I’ve already been receiving emails from companies announcing changes to their usual programmes. With yacht racing on hold due to coronavirus social distancing measures in place and the world’s major regattas postponed or cancelled, some companies that would usually charter their yachts for racing are now diversifying to offer them for cruising instead. Other companies may also have to look to attract a different clientele. Chartering a boat in the UK will certainly be one of the safer options for a family holiday and I’m sure there’s many places waiting to be discovered. Another idea that’s been mooted to increase boating is to make it more affordable. While businesses obviously have to make money, it’s been suggested that marina fees could be reduced to a level comparable with many European countries and more marinas built around the UK coast. The theory being that increasing capacity will help grow the market, bring down mooring fees and also create more jobs. Obviously it’s easier said than done but when some marinas charge up to £9,000 a year for a 30-40ft boat and while yacht clubs have waiting lists for their moorings, people will inevitably think twice before buying a boat. Is it now time for a shake-up of this market? What are your views?

Aquafax has efficiently adapted to the challenges of operating a business during the COVID-19 pandemic by embracing new ways of working with technology. In line with government guidelines, the distributor of marine and industrial equipment closed all of its depots and trade counters in mid-March. It also furloughed many staff to ensure their safety and protect jobs. “WhatsApp, SMS and electronic bulletins have become an integral part of daily communication and allowed remote staff to continue to be involved in the business, whether directly contributing, or if only able to cheer on from the sideline," said Marie Louise Rogers, Aquafax general manager. “Similarly, Microsoft Teams became the new way to hold meetings and will be adopted in the future along with traditional methods of contact.” The company's new website has helped facilitate business activities during the pandemic. ADOPTING HOMEWORKING In an effort to support customers still operating during the pandemic, Aquafax rapidly adopted homeworking. “This enabled staff to continue to take technical calls,” said Marie. “We also fulfilled orders with a small crew out of our head office in Luton, and later a two-man team in our Hamble facility. “We provided a limited courier delivery service and offered direct deliveries on behalf of our customers so they could continue to

Aquafax is now offering free delivery for purchases over £100 in the UK mainland. On July 1, it will launch a same day free delivery service out of its Hamble depot to customers with a SO and PO postcode, plus daily deliveries to the Isle of Wight. Several new brands will also be launched over the coming months.

DROUGHT SHUTS NORTH WEST CANALS Navigation opportunities along the Leeds & Liverpool, Peak Forest and Macclesfield canals will be restricted this summer as a result of reduced reservoir capacity and one of the driest springs on record. Keeping boats moving during July and August is the priority and to conserve water the canals were not re-opened on June 1 when COVID-19 restrictions were relaxed across the rest of the network. However, the Canal & River Trust is planning to offer boaters a window for

emergency boat movements in the next couple of weeks and will confirm dates shortly. Boaters will still be able to cruise along lock-free sections and the canals will continue to be open for towpath use and for angling, canoeing and other unpowered boats provided social distancing rules are observed. “The last few years have seen long dry periods and hence have been extremely challenging for water supply for these three North West canals. We appreciate it must

be frustrating for boaters despite the efforts we are making,” said Daniel Greenhalgh, Trust North West director. “We are acutely aware that boating businesses and private boaters alike have suffered from the major disruption caused by the coronavirus lockdown, now followed by navigation restrictions caused by a lack of water. “We will continue to review how we manage the water supply available to give the best service we can.”

For the 2019 year of account, the club reported an on budget combined ratio of 105.1% and a 6% increase in member numbers to 7,886. Finances were strengthened by a strong investment return of US$48.8m which contributed to an overall surplus of US$36.1m. MARKETING CHRIS JONES is founder of the Knot Agency The world as we knew it is no longer. Consumer behaviour patterns have changed radically in recent months and adapting to meet these new trends could set your business apart as we transition into the post Covid era. Here are a few of the top emerging trends: 8 Online sales have soared with the lockdown, with the biggest change amongst the previously resistant older generations. 8 Remote working and socialising have become the new norm, with the likes of Zoom entering every aspect of daily life. Have increased efficiencies cemented these tools as part of our existence at the expense of previous habits such as meeting up with friends for a drink? 8 Supporting local businesses has become increasingly important to consumers, but it is often at the expense of product choice and availability. Will we continue to accept a smaller product offer going forward? Will British Made become an important factor for consumers? 8 Consumers are forgiving and willing to wait: The public accept that businesses face unprecedented complexity at present and when kept informed are willing to wait longer for a response or delivery. Will impatient 'want it now' attitudes relax to accept a slower more sustainable pace going forwards? These trends are a small selection of those likely to evolve rapidly over the next few months and we will have to wait and see which harden into habits and which should be parked in the minds of business owners and marketeers for the future.

WASHINGTON POST JIM NOLAN runs US based James Nolan Associates The full impact of the economic fallout from the COVID-19 outbreak on the recreational marine industry will not be known for some time but it is likely to be severe. The traditional way of doing business will likely also be dramatically impacted. In order to adjust to the new reality that emerges is for our industry to embrace positive innovation. An excellent example is the Dealer Inventory Exchange portal, the recreational marine industry's first direct dealer-to-dealer resource for locating, selling and purchasing wholesale inventory throughout North America. Launched at the end of April this year, it was created by Vantage Resource Group, a provider of protection film products for the marine and recreational vehicle industries. The www.dealerinventory exchange.com site has several features, including password-protected access for dealers only — notably, it doesn't matter if dealers are customers of Vantage Resource Group or not. It offers dealers the ability to list inventory for sale, to source inventory that they may want to purchase, as well as to list inventory that a dealer may be in search of. The site provides robust search capabilities, as well as an easy site registration process. And, currently, it's all free. There are undoubtedly many other positive innovations being developed now. Our industry would benefit enormously if there was a forum where they could be collectively and openly worked on.

The Canal & River Trust has started a major repair project to upgrade Carr Mill Reservoir on the outskirts of St Helens, Merseyside. Costing just over £1m, the work will be delivered in two phases and is due to be completed by the end of 2020. Thanks to the use of an underwater remotely operated vehicle, water levels will only need to be slightly lowered. The reservoir is a popular venue for angling and water sports, as well as a great habitat for wildlife. Richard Spencer, project team leader with the charity said the trust was delighted to be able to keep the reservoir in water. “The robotic remotely operated vehicle is able to carry out a range of tasks underwater and will allow us to complete much of the work by the crest road without the need for a full draw down of the water,” he said. “Our top priority is to keep local residents and businesses safe so from time to time we need to upgrade equipment and repair and replace the infrastructure."

BAR Technologies is to partner with Chartwell Marine to develop the next generation of offshore wind crew transfer vessels. BAR Technologies was set up in 2016 to build on the design and technical skills developed through the naval architect team's involvement in the America's Cup, headed by Sir Ben Ainslie. This latest partnership is aimed at developing new vessel designs from 30m transfer vessels to 60m service accommodation and transfer vessels. BAR's patented foil optimisation and stabilisation system will be incorporated into the design together with the latest innovations in hydrofoil technology. John Cooper, CEO, BAR Technologies said the market is well served by existing designs, but the trend for building further out at sea presents new challenges in the form of longer journeys and potentially rougher waters. “We see the Chartwell 24 and BAR 30m vessels as natural partners,” he said. “The former provides high versatility, high payload and large deck space, while the latter demonstrates up to 50% fuel efficiency savings at 15 knots and advanced

A collaborative project developing and producing novel bio-based thermoplastic composite materials for marine applications has produced its first 3D printed biopolymer fender profile for use in the marine environment. SeaBioComp's fender profile was printed on an FDM Printer by project partner Poly Products, a Netherland- based composite production and specialist engineering business, in collaboration with project observer partner De Klerk Waterbouw, which specialises in the installation of products for the marine environment.

"Using our 3D-printing technique, products can be made directly without the need of a mould. This saves the use of material and time," said Dr Albert ten Busschen, Poly Products. Facilitated by the EU's

Interreg 2 Seas programme, the SeaBioComp project funded research into the adaptations required to enable the 3D printing machine to process biopolymers. The research, undertaken by Poly Products,

included testing temperature control, natural fibre selection and corrosion of extruder parts. De Klerk Waterbouw aimed to investigate the design and production of a bio-composite vertical fender profile for the berthing and guiding of ships, in order to replace traditionally used tropical hard woods and synthetic plastics. Further optimisation of designs, materials and production may lead to future full-scale production.

BUSINESSMATTERS GARETH EDWARDS: Partner in the employment team at VW

The UK left the European Union at the end of January and while there has been much debate about procedures, many employers will be wondering what happens next. The simple answer is nothing. Yet. The transitional period Following Brexit, the UK entered a transitional period which lasts until the end of 2020. During this time the UK will continue to comply with EU law, which from an employer's perspective means that: 5 EU free movement rules will continue until 31 December 2020 5 there will be no changes to the Right of Work checks employers conduct on EU, European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals and their family members until 1 January 2021 5 EU, EEA and Swiss nationals (and their nonEEA family members) resident in the UK by 31 December 2020 will be eligible to apply for settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) 5 the deadline for applications to the EUSS is 30 June 2021 The government plans to introduce a new immigration

WHAT’S CHANGING FOR EMPLOYERS OF EU NATIONALS? Company records can then be updated and - as the deadline approaches - steps can be taken to remind employees who have not applied of the requirement to do so. Employers should think about the most appropriate way of conducting such a review and communication in ways which do not fall foul of any accusations of discrimination or victimisation.

system that will come into force as the transitional period ends. The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) published a report at the end of January on minimum salary levels and how the UK might learn from pointsbased immigration systems in other countries. The government subsequently announced mid-February that low-skilled migrants won't get visas and that visa applicants will need 70 points plus to work in the UK. In the meantime, recruitment activity this year will be largely unaffected by Brexit, except for those situations where new employees will not start work until 2021, in which case anyone who is not a

British or Irish citizen will need to prove that they have been granted immigration permission to work in the UK. For EU, EEA and Swiss nationals this might be status under the EUSS, but for those who arrive in the UK from 1 January 2021, they will be subject to the new immigration system along with the rest of the world. WHAT EMPLOYERS SHOULD DO NOW Employers should inform employees about the EUSS to ensure maximum awareness that some will need to make an application in order to continue living in the UK. The government has an Employer Toolkit which

contains leaflets, briefing packs and factsheets to help employers communicate accurate information on the EUSS to employees. Additional information that might be worth circulating can be found on the government's website including a link to the EUSS application form. For those employers who have not already done so, it's recommended that they conduct an audit of their workforce to identify staff who are EU, EEA and Swiss nationals. To ensure that those who need to apply do so, employers should ask members of staff to provide them with confirmation that they have been granted status under the EUSS.

THE FUTURE From the MAC's report and what the government has said so far, it seems likely that employer sponsorship similar to the current Tier two immigration arrangements - will continue to form the backbone of the UK's work visa routes. Employers without a sponsor licence may wish to consider applying for one now, particularly those who are likely to continue recruiting EU nationals in the future. For those employers with a Tier two licence, they would be advised to review current compliance to ensure that their licence is not at risk and that it can continue to be used when the new immigration system comes into force.

workplaces and protecting workers on returning to work upon relaxation of coronavirus lockdown measures. The guidance was produced in collaboration with the European Commission and the tripartite Advisory Committee on Safety and Health at Work and the Senior Labour Inspectors Committee. The guidelines are non-binding. The guidance covers a number of topics - risk

assessment and appropriate measures, specifically, minimising exposure to coronavirus, resuming work after a period of closure, and coping with a high rate of absence. It also has advice for managing workers working from home, in particular, involving workers in the process, taking care of workers who have been ill, planning and learning for the future and staying well informed.

ACAS GUIDANCE - COVID-19 Acas, the government's employment conciliation service, has revised its guidance on vulnerable people in the document Coronavirus (COVID-19): advice for employers and employees, writes Adam Bernstein. There is now extra wording regarding putting persons who are shielding on furlough under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.

16 | JUNE 2020

The guidance already stated that such persons should stay at home for at least 12 weeks from when they receive such a letter telling them to start shielding and talk to their employer as soon as they can if they have been told to start shielding or think they might get a letter telling them to start shielding. The guidance suggests they can ask to be furloughed if they cannot

work from home and also notes that details about their medical condition must be kept confidential, unless the employee or worker says it can be shared. HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING

Dometic's new global marine air conditioning system enables boaters to plug into any shore power system at any harbour around the world. The Turbo Global Air Conditioning system features a versatile compressor which eliminates the need for any voltage regulating devices and takes away national borders for vessels. “We are pleased to be delivering an innovative solution that meets the need in the market," said Peter Kruk, president of EMEA, Dometic. “Innovation and product leadership are important components of our strategy at Dometic and it is great to see our product will help boaters all over the world enjoy time on the water in greater comfort.” Dometic Turbo air conditioning systems previously worked with 50 Hertz or 60 Hertz, but not both. Voltage and Hertz were system specifications that varied by model and application. This means Taylors heaters were developed in the 1920's, when boating life was simpler and the products reflected a self-sufficient adventurer lifestyle - a time before marinas. As MD of Sea Sure that acquired the company in 2007, Graham Brown explained, equipment needed to last, be dependable and simple to maintain and repair when users were away from port. “In the modern era they are somewhat of a 'Marmite' product, you either love 'em or hate 'em, nothing in between,” he said. “As well as their exceptional reliability, they could not drain the batteries when running and radiated a lot of heat on those cold nights at anchor. In fact, they put out a whopping heat equivalent of more than 2kW's, making for a very cosy evening.”

boaters needed to install a voltage regulating device to power the system at harbours in different countries. To solve this issue, Dometic developed a new line of compressors capable of providing its air-conditioning units with seamless operation using 200-240 volts at both 50 Hertz and 60 Hertz. These versatile compressors are made for Dometic's 6,000

BTU through 18,000 BTU line of direct-expansion air conditioning systems, both self-contained and split-gas designs. The new Turbo Global Air Conditioning system will also allow Dometic to reduce its

American coast and blagging some aviation fuel (as its really paraffin) so that they can heat their boat and cook a hot meal.” And the fact that there have been no developments with the heaters means complete interchangeability and availability of spare parts. “From an end user point of view, they are the lowest cost heaters you can buy and from an environmental point of view, they are the ultimate in 'green' pieces of boating equipment,” explained Graham. Units are available as either diesel or paraffin fuelled and either polished brass case or stainless steel. A service and refurbishment service is also offered. The heaters are hand-built in Warsash.

PROTOTYPE UNITS ARE TESTED Canadian heating systems company, International Thermal Research, has spent the last few months developing a new control system for its Hurricane range of diesel fired heaters to allow greater fuel efficiencies and reduced emissions. The company has prototype units being tested in the field and hopes to have the new system finalised by the end of the year. The DC powered hydronic heater system is suitable for a range of vessels including ocean going, riverine and canal boats. “They all have a patented no smoke, no smell burner with advanced electronic control for safe and reliable operation and the simple design allows for easy servicing and maintenance,” explained Steven Cox-Watkins, office manager for European distributor Calcutt Boats. "The Hurricane is efficient, quiet and economical to operate.” The most popular model sold in the UK is the Hurricane SCH25 - 7.3 kW which has an output of 25000 btu. The model can handle six heating zones; four for space heating, one for domestic hot water and an engine zone and is designed to operate on 11 to 15 volts DC. It can burn a range of fuels - gas oil (red diesel), road diesel, kerosene, heating oil without the need for adjustment or modification. The new control system will have more features and self-diagnostics when it is fully released to market.

Even though the acute threat of COVID-19 will pass, this virus is a transformative event that will change lifestyle and businesses forever. As attention shifts to the ‘restart’ following some easing of restrictions, British Marine continues to make the pandemic our top priority and is in the midst of a phased approach to preparing members and their business for a safe and successful emergence from lockdown, whilst being aware of the UK’s four nations differing approaches. It is welcome news that watersports and boating were in the first wave of activities to be allowed in England by the Government, and that businesses are being encouraged to function again. However, the safety of people and a business’s workforce remains paramount. The virus has not disappeared and is very much still with us. Every person and business need to be prepared and ‘COVID-secure’. British Marine has provided a Phase 1 Back to Business guidance document covering key operational and financial considerations that businesses need to prioritise before re-opening. The new workshop complements the custom-built container that Marine Results has operated from at STP Shipyard for the past 12 months. “We've always been aware of Palma as the heart of Mediterranean yachting, and whilst we have worked on large yacht projects there every winter since the company was formed, we were spending an increasing

Timage has a range of new products of superyachts including director's chairs, lighting and deck showers. The Iseo is a folding director's chair created by nautical designer, Christian Grande. Handmade in Italy, the structure comprises multiple layers of laminated and moulded teak. “The chair is without doubt a statement addition to any yacht, offering comfort, practicality and exquisite Italian design,” said Timage director, Oliver Lanza. The company has also released the Montisola director's chair, this time made from solid teak with chrome hinges and brackets and leather-clad feet to avoid marking the deck. important experience on a large yacht?” Timage has also added a new table lamp to its range.

The Piacentini is an LED table lamp made from brass with a solid marble base. Customers can choose from a selection of different marbles as well as finishes for the metal components. The lamp features an invisible touch dimmer which switches the lamp on or off and controls brightness. Finally, Timage is paying attention to often hidden hardware. Simple solutions such as chrome cupboard latches and door handles help raise the perceived quality of the interior finish, says the company. “When a boat owner pulls on a lever behind a cupboard and feels a solid, smooth chrome handle and a positive action, they can be sure that every effort has gone into crafting a high-quality interior,” said Oliver.

“We therefore decided the time had come to provide year-round support rather than just seasonal support.” The new facility will house splicing and storage facilities

as well as a component servicing area. A dye-penetrant line, for non-destructive testing of mast and yacht structures and appendages, has also

been installed which will be operated by Marine Results International's partner company International NDT. Marine Results International was founded in 2003 and is headed by Ed Danby and Jon Morris. In addition to rigging work the company has evolved advanced non-destructive testing techniques now used on superyachts. In 2019, the directors set up International NDT headed by Giles Waterhouse. Marine Results International continues to operate from the UK and the three companies together share mobile workshops in Carrara, Italy and La Ciotat France.

ALROSE CHOSEN FOR CUSTOM BUILT SOLUTIONS Alrose Products provides motion control solutions in the marine and industrial sectors with the company's Marineline range of stainless-steel gas springs used extensively in the superyacht sector. The company says superyacht builders choose Alrose for custom built support solutions such as double action gas springs in its Gull Wing hatch and door applications where safe control of the panel is essential. “In the case of heavy and awkward shaped hatches the weight can move outwards when opening and the load can significantly increase, double ended gas springs are ideal for the safe control and operation of these systems,” explained Jim Boulton, who heads business development at Alrose. “Alrose is chosen where high-quality, highperformance and visually pleasing solutions are required for both above and below deck applications.”

VRIPACK UNVEILS NATURE-INSPIRED YACHT

Vripack has unveiled its latest concept 66m fossil-free electric/diesel hybrid yacht. The design of Futura was inspired by wildlife's ability to freely propel through air and water. “That's the beauty of naval architecture,” said cocreative director, Marnix Hoekstra. “First and foremost, you should mimic nature in the send that you use as little energy as possible when crossing through the waves. We were driven by that goal at the outset.”

A third of the height of a yacht of comparable size and made out of glass, Futura is exceptionally lightweight thanks to it rhombus-shaped framing which gives a crosshatched diamond effect, much like fish scales. It features a 20-person dining table, DJ booth, helipad, swimming pool and whirlpool. Capable of holding 100,000 litres of fuel, Futura is designed to run solely on 'blue diesel' if desired - a type of Finnish biofuel made from waste food. Its fully

biodegradeable batteries are made from salt, sand, water and plants and charged by a kite on an electric winch. “What Futura offers owners is choice,” said co-creative director, Bart Bouwhuis. “By approaching sustainability as a design challenge, we're not waiting for owners to request this technology, we're presenting them with a concept based on sustainable solutions that currently exist. The answers are out there, the supply is out there, owners just need to want it.”

springs which allows for off the shelf supply from stocking dealers or direct from the UK. In addition Alrose has recently invested in a new seven axis machining centre to further expand its range of CAD, CNC and CMM services.

TWO-WEEK TURNAROUND CJR Propulsion launched a two-week design and production service for Class 5 propellers up to 1.5m in diameter last year. And says CJR technical sales manager Alex Stevens, it has proved very popular, especially during the charter season and with builders who are not sure of the final boat weight until close to the end of the build. “Historically, when it came to the design and production of propellers, you could have speed of delivery or high quality, not both,” said Alex. “Rapid production meant opting for an off the shelf pattern that was considered a ‘close match’ to your vessel.” These off the shelf products will not be as effective in terms of top speed, fuel burn, ride comfort and longevity unlike the fully-optimised propellers.

FRESH NEW PRODUCTS FROM C-QUIP C-Quip is introducing several new products suitable for superyachts. The new Wing Cleats will complement the company's existing wing cleat, that has proven to be very successful having been fitted to a number of brands over the last decade. The new cleat is a design change and product upgrade and has been load tested well in excess of mooring rope failure loads. In its closed position, the unit has a low profile that will not interfere with the lines of a boat. Care has also been taken when producing the cleat that it will not chafe mooring lines. Also new to C-Quip are pull up cleats to support the company's existing range. “These are a new design, following a more contemporary, crisp look that designers are now looking for,” explained Ian Cooke, C-Quip MD. Simrad developed its Command platform to provide integrated solutions to boatbuilders. The platform is for single and multi-party projects where data capture, smart functionality and customer experience are paramount, says Gianluca Babini who is in charge of the mega yacht engineering department at Simrad. “With Simrad Command we can now offer unique solutions for their boats,” said Gianluca. “Multifunctional display solutions that not only offer navigation functions but also monitor and control all of the boat's key processes and systems. “From the design-phase to close collaboration with engine manufacturers and our technical know-how, makes Simrad Command one of the few platforms that can provide this level of integrated solutions.”

COMMAND PLATFORM HELPS DATA CAPTURE

FUEL ADDITIVES 'MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER'

The company has developed partnerships with Sunseeker, Ferretti and Sanlorenzo among other boatbuilders and says fullyintegrated marine electronic systems that enhance the boating experience are increasingly important. Moving on from the

Command platform, one of the next developments in equipment for superyachts, predicts Gianluca, will be automatic mooring, particularly important for non-professional crew. “I think that many companies are investing in this field,” said Gianluca.

8 The Simrad Command Platform provides unique solutions for boatbuilders

“Today there are many devices that are necessary to reach the goal in the market at an affordable price. “Now a big job is required to develop the software.”

Fuel additives will become increasingly important as diesel currently in storage finds its way into fuel tanks, says MarShip's director, Peter Weide. Since the global COVID-19 lockdown, demand for fuel has plummeted. Shutting down a refinery is not straightforward and many are still operating at 65% capacity. As a consequence, billions of barrels of crude oil and diesel are languishing in ships around the world. “Modern ultra low sulphur diesel does not store well,” explained Peter. “It is widely accepted by all the oil majors that diesel should not be stored longer than six months, after which it degrades very rapidly.” Amid concerns that sulphur is injurious to health, governments have acted to remove sulphur from diesel. To achieve the ultra low levels of 0.001% the oil must go through many processes, resulting in a highly unstable product prone to sludge formation. Additives such as MarShip's DieselAid LDB help slow the degradation but are not routinely added because of cost. “They put additives into the fuel, but only the bare minimum; after all, they make diesel for you to buy, not store,” said Peter. “So in a few months all these millions of barrels of diesel on the ships will filter through the system and end up on your fuel tanks. Never has there been a greater need for fuel additives than now."

calibrations made on the Quick products systems or on the chart plotter are automatically shared between the two systems. The QNN will connect automatically to any new generation chart plotter compatible with HTML5 and once installed, an icon will appear on the chart plotter to allow the user access to both the Quick products homepage and the control interface.

Quick's new Nautical Network allows the integration of the company's systems with third party navigation systems. The Quick Nautical Network (QNN) is a gateway able to receive all the different protocols used by Quick devices such as thrusters, battery chargers, windlasses, MC² Quick Gyros, lighting ranges and more, to convert them into the HTML5 protocol and send them to the new generation chart plotters on the market.

RISKS REDUCED

BH FABRICATIONS RISES TO THE CHALLENGE

With an increase in terrorist activity and pirate attacks occurring in regions of the world, owners and captains of superyachts must consider these threats and take extra measures to ensure the safety of onboard personnel and assets, warns ASL GRP’s Dr Paul Bourke. The risks to safety from such terrorist attacks is more likely to occur whilst moored in a marina or port, where high profile, publicised events and larger gatherings become a potential target, she says. A key material for superyacht protection is the company's Legion Polyethylene that has advantages over traditional steel armour. “It is designed to delaminate and naturally slow a projectile, capturing the bullet or fragment therefore ensuring no ricochet,” said Paul. “Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is one of the strongest man-made fibres, yet it weighs 1/8th of the same volume of steel.” He added: “ASL GRP's Legion Polyethylene armour is typically half the weight of the finest Swedish armour steel for the same threat.” Protection can be installed during the initial boat build or as part of a refit. It can also be installed on yacht tenders. The panels have a white finish.

BH Fabrications manufactures a wide variety of bespoke superyacht fixtures and fittings. The team works in stainless steel, aluminium TIG and MIG welding with projects including Gloriana, the royal rowing boat and Shemara. “Years of experience in this

PROFILE

MARIE-CLAUDE HEYS KEY YACHTING MD

Key Yachting MD, MarieClaude Heys, is the epitome of the phrase 'follow your dreams'. Her passion for sailing, coupled with incredible tenacity, determination and selfbelief, resulted in more than 20 years of competitive racing, culminating in crewing for two Whitbread Round the World races. Marie-Claude's parents trained in medicine in Paris and moved to Brest with her two elder brothers before she was born. “My parents had a passion for outdoor sports - sailing, mountaineering, skiing etc and regularly raced. My mother helmed and my father skippered.” From the age of seven, Marie-Claude sailed. “I initially thought about being a vet or going to art school, but from 12 onwards I only wanted to sail. For me it was more than a hobby; it was a lifestyle.” At 16, Marie-Claude was allowed to skipper her parent's boat, a 28ft cruiser. “This gave me a great sense of responsibility, for the boat and the people on board.” A year later, in 1977, MarieClaude dreamed of sailing around the world, particularly Cape Horn. “I saw this as a huge adventure, an opportunity to be with people, to enjoy the camaraderie, yet be on your own with so much freedom.” CHARTER BUSINESS And so the journey began. After two years studying English and Spanish at university, she left to concentrate on offshore sailing and to build a charter business using her parents' boat. What followed was a two-year adventure in professional sailing, sailing from Brest to Tahiti via England, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, islands in the Pacific and through the Panama Canal.

a variety of J boats in numerous UK-based events (including Cowes), MarieClaude skippered charters between the Mediterranean and Caribbean, managed shore logistics for a French Round the World Race entry and taught French. It was only when she met her future husband, Paul Heys, that life began to settle down.

Upon her return to France, and eager to learn more about sail-making and boat building, Marie-Claude honed her skills by working for local firms. “Alongside racing boats, I wanted to know everything about them and these two areas matched my skill set.” In 1983, Marie-Claude entered the singlehanded Figaro race, crossing to Ireland, back to France, then Spain before returning. “It's a sprint across shipping lanes and in those days, there was no GPS and an intermittent auto-pilot, so you were reliant on your skills and endurance.” She also competed in the 1987, 1990 and 1991 races and skippered female crews for the Tour de France a La Voile in 1985 and 1986. TRANSATLANTIC RACE By 25, Marie-Claude completed her first successful transatlantic race - Monaco-New York on Lady Elf. The crew were victorious and during the 1986 Paris Boat Show, she heard about Tracy Edwards and her plan for a female crew in the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World Race. MarieClaude applied and was

invited to serve as first mate. Despite preparing the boat 'Maiden' for the voyage, things didn't work out and Marie-Claude wasn't to compete in the Race until

8 Marie-Claude with the J Dream crew, winners of the J Cup

1993-94, as part of a 12-women crew on 'Heineken' (at the helm and sail-making). Four years later, she crewed in the Southern Ocean leg of the Race on 'EF Education'. In between another transatlantic race and sailing 8 Marie-Claude only wanted to sail

HISTORY “I met Paul in 1993, before setting off in 'Heineken'. I cleaned boats at his brokerage and when I returned a year later, he offered me a job in after sales. We started a business together in 1996, married in 1998, and the rest as they say is history.” Key Yachting has exclusive distributor rights for J Boats, Grand Soleil, Tofinou and Nautitech Catamarans, covering the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands. “We treat our customers like family. We're here 24/7 and run racing events so everyone can come together.” Marie-Claude was widowed in 2019 and received the British Yachting Lifetime Achievement Award obo Paul in December. This she says, 'reflects the warmth of feeling and respect people had for him'. After many years 'living out of a suitcase' and working on different projects, MarieClaude looks back at her time sailing as 'a dream fulfilled'. “It's not a lifestyle that suits everyone; there's no safety or security, but this is the price you pay for freedom.” Marie-Claude still enjoys sailing, but nowadays focuses on Hamble-based Key Yachting and her second home in south east France. Her resilience is demonstrated by her motto 'live your dream, be kind and don't let people hurt you... rise above it'. 8 Marie-Claude took part in the single-handed Figaro race in 1983

RETIREMENT

“I remember when it was still typewriters and telex machines in the industry,” muses Jane Gentry, former CEO of the Yacht Brokers, Designers and Surveyors Association who has retired after 20 years in the role. “Tim Berners-Lee's World Wide Web had just been born when I started at YBDSA - we had no website, one desktop computer for wordprocessing, a fax machine, four members of staff and everything for the members was sent out by the Royal Mail. With the help of our amazing members, the Associations have come a long way in the last 20 years,” reminisced Jane. The Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents (ABYA) and YDSA now account for the largest registry of commercial vessels in the UK; they have broker and surveyor members across the globe and have set up industry-leading training academies. UPSIDE-DOWN “My marine career started (and not a lot of people know this) working for a publication called 'Fishing News Books' which had an office in West Byfleet. My boss was a journalist who, scarily, could read my shorthand upsidedown and tell me when I did it wrong. “I was only there for a few months and moved on to the Royal Yachting Association they were based in Woking, where I lived and their legal department needed a junior secretary. I worked for

Gordon Fairley and his PA Ros Lang. I also worked for the Seamanship Foundation - now called 'Sailability' which had just been set up under the leadership of Lt Col Douglas Hurndall. They were all lovely people and I learned a lot.” And although the Seamanship Foundation ran sailing courses for the blind and partially sighted, Jane couldn't sail. LEARNT TO SAIL “Douglas Hurndall took me onto a boat, showed me what he needed me to do and then said - 'now teach

the others how to do it.' So that is how I learnt to sail. “After a couple of years, I was 'poached' (according to Gordon Fairley) by the Yacht Racing Department. I worked for John Reed for about eight years and was fortunate to organise events such as World Sailing Speed Record Week held in Portland Harbour, youth and ladies' events, team racing events and the 1984 Weymouth Olympic Week which selected the UK team for the Olympics.” After ten years, Jane moved on and did a stint at Birds Eye in Walton on Thames. “They sent me on a computer course for a week at the same time as Birds Eye introduced email - I still remember how excited we

were to be able to send emails to the Hull and Grimsby factories.” When the SBBNF (now British Marine) had a vacancy, Jane went to work for Paul Wagstaffe, attending an ABYA Brokerage course. HISTORY Jane carried out varies roles at SBBNF/BMIF including Parliamentary liaison, training and latterly supported Tom Nighy in the technical department. On 1 May 2000 Jane began work for the YBDSA as CEO. And the rest, so they say, is history. “I have enjoyed the job immensely and will miss everyone a great deal. My role has been very far-reaching. From the

day-to-day activities of helping members with legal questions and VAT issues all the way through to working with various government bodies on proposed regulations and understanding new regulations, such as GDPR and FCA requirements relating to client accounts. “The best part really is that every day is different - I never know what questions will arise and sometimes it requires some research to get to the information that is needed.” JOB DESCRIPTION She added: “When I first discussed my retirement with the management board, I was asked to write a job description - I soon realised how hard that was. The two facets - yacht brokerage and yacht surveying are very different but the process is part of a whole and the unique facility of the YBDSA to bring the two parties together for discussions and networking is a huge benefit to both groups. We have been busy for 20 years and had a great time doing it all. A huge 'thank-you' to everyone I have worked with across the industry over that time.” Bas Edmonds has now taken on the role of CEO at ABYA and YDSA - the professional associations for brokers and surveyors respectively. 8 Jane organised events such as World Sailing Speed Record Week

And he said both have Ric and Nigel have an excellent track record of managing and motivating teams to deliver consistently profitable returns. “There are some exciting plans in place for the next few years and we're looking forward to putting the Topsail brand at the forefront of European yacht insurance,” said Ric. “We are all aware that yacht market has undergone a turbulent period in recent years and I firmly believe now is the right time for a genuine alternative.” Nigel added “I am really looking forward to helping a much wider audience in the UK and Europe see what a fantastic range products and unrivalled service Topsail offers to its clients. “Their rapid growth in Australia over recent years is testament to that and look forward to working with the overseas team to further enhance the group offering.”
