INTERNATIONAL LIFESAVERS OF THE FUTURE
A pioneering scheme is uniting students from around the world with local community volunteers with the shared aim of helping to save lives on the coast.
Thought to be a world-first, the collaborative scheme has seen the establishment of a new National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) station at the prestigious UWC Atlantic College at St Donat’s, Wales, UK where seven student NCI ‘cadets’ from Canada, Kenya, Taiwan, Pakistan, China, Peru and the Netherlands are now completing their training under the supervision of trained volunteers from the local area. It’s also part of the students’ formal International Baccalaureate qualification which requires an element of service in the community.
The NCI St Donat’s Bay station, on the rugged Vale of Glamorgan coast to the west of Cardiff, is one of nearly 60 of the charity’s stations around Wales and England. The Atlantic College students (aged between 16 and 19) are receiving the NCI’s watchkeeping training in a range of skills such as interpreting weather and tides, VHF radio operation and reading maritime charts.
Jessica Moon Bowen,
Activities Team Leader at UWC Atlantic and Deputy Station Manager NCI St Donat’s Bay, said the initiative continues the college’s long connections with maritime safety.
“Here at UWC Atlantic, we have a long history of helping to save lives at sea, going back to the 1960s when our students helped develop the Atlantic class rigid hull inflatable boat (RIB) which revolutionised international maritime rescue and became the model for RNLI inshore rescue boats.
“And now, our partnership with the NCI means we are bringing our student experience and skills right up to date, creating lifesavers of the future who will help spread the word worldwide,” she said.
Ms Bowen added, “They started training in September 2022 and they already have a great sense of achievement and fulfilment to take on to their future lives and careers. One of the students is from Peru and has been so inspired by the whole experience that she’s already thinking about setting up a similar scheme when she returns home to Lima.
“It’s fantastic that our students really can help maritime safety in our local community through our
partnership with the NCI and take it on to the next level.”
The St Donat’s Bay station opened in 2021 and is expected to achieve HM Coastguard Declared Facility Status in 2023 which means it is formally recognised as part of the maritime search and rescue organisation. The Covid pandemic delayed the start of training but it’s now well underway, said Station Manager Jo Schup.
“Covid safety meant that we were only able to start our cadet training a few months ago but we’re delighted to see that the wonderful partnership with UWC Atlantic is now coming to fruition. The detailed training provided to the cadets
New status fundamental to training
SeaRegs Training celebrated National Apprenticeship Week with great news.
Following 5 years of successfully delivering apprenticeship training through sub-contracting, SeaRegs Training has now been approved by the UK Education Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) to work directly with employers and apprentices as a Main Provider.
SeaRegs Training currently has over forty Boatmaster, Workboat Crew and Port Operative Apprentices through 20 employers, with more starting in March and another cohort due in Autumn of this year.
SeaRegs Training’s proven track record of successfully training apprentices across the three apprenticeship standards and their close working relationship with
employers and apprentices alike has seen demand for their apprenticeship provision grow over the last couple of years.
Director Simon Jinks commented, “We’ve worked on promoting apprenticeships to employers over the last 12 months, interest has grown as they
is exactly the same as that for all our volunteers and they are really rising to the challenge.”
Another challenge has also been the language and maritime terminology which the students have not experienced before. Jo added, “As an island nation, we take our weather and a lot of our maritime vocabulary for granted. But people from different parts of the world may never have experienced some of the words and terms we routinely use such as foghorn, tides and currents or sea mists. Our local volunteers have been amazing in helping the students with practical support and backing up the training to help them succeed.”
understand the benefits of recruiting and training apprentices.
“During Seawork 2022, The Workboat Association invited a number of our apprentices to attend their annual dinner to showcase apprenticeships and raise awareness in the industry. Becoming a main provider is fundamental to protect the apprenticeship training programmes we’ve developed and will allow us to continue to improve and expand our provision”.
To date, apprentices who have successfully completed the apprenticeships have all gone on to secure full time employment or, with the support of their employers, continued with their maritime education to progress their maritime careers.

LAUNCH PAD FOR SINGAPORE
Vessel monitoring and control solutions provider, Reygar, has won Innovate UK funding to develop a range of new features for its successful BareFLEET product in collaboration with Singaporebased designer, builder, owner and operator of high-speed aluminium craft, Penguin International Limited (PIL).
The project, dubbed FleetVision, will build on Reygar’s commercially proven BareFLEET technology to offer live feedback on various aspects of vessel performance, leveraging Penguin’s extensive experience in shipbuilding and ship management.
Machine learning tools will be jointly developed to identify operating efficiency and cost reduction opportunities and to monitor machinery health, alongside adaptations that will enable more vessel types to benefit from the system.
PIL designs and builds a range of aluminium workboats which it also owns and operates. Since 1995, PIL has delivered over 200 aluminium vessels to ship owners globally and is the world’s biggest builder of multi-role crew boats.
Both Reygar and PIL envisage long-term, mutual benefits, with the project acting as a potential launch pad for access to new technology and target markets.
James Tham, PIL’s Managing Director, sees vast potential in the application of data-driven performance monitoring technology to enhance efficiency and emission reductions for commercial highspeed vessels.
“FleetVision represents the coming together of proven expertise and experience in real-time remote monitoring technology and the design, construction and operation of efficient, human-centric high-speed workboats. The outcome will
be an intelligent performance analytics and decision support tool, developed by experienced practitioners, for sustainable high-speed vessel operations.”
Reygar was founded in 2012 by Chris Huxley-Reynard and Felix Francis, both of whom have extensive, handson experience in offshore renewables, maritime operations and the application of new technologies for efficient fleet operations. Applying that understanding of the practical challenges faced by mariners and vessel operators has been key in developing the company’s simple to use and cost-effective technology.
Chris Huxley-Reynard, CEO of Reygar, said, “We are passionate about helping fleet operators make better,

NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR ‘SPECIALISTS IN FLOATY THINGS’
ELECTRIFYING INITIATIVE
Achieving the strategic aim of an all-electric RIB event support fleet on Italy’s Lake Garda by 2024 is a step closer thanks to RS Electric Boats and Milan-based Negrinautica, one of the largest watersports distributors in Europe.
Working with an Italian consortium of tourism specialists, mayors of local regions, presidents of communities, and councillors for tourism, and sport, as well as pertinent sailing clubs - all of whom are actively working towards preserving the natural, stunning beauty of the area and the sailing on offerNegrinautica set up a key stakeholders’ conference and invited RS Electric Boats to showcase its Pulse 63 RIB.
New innovative access options for inspection, maintenance, build and demolition of bridges, piers and other structures over water are now available thanks to a new partnership between ScaffFloat, developer of a patented plastic float that allows the design and build of pontoons and workboats out of standard scaffold components, and Richter the largest firm of temporary works designers in the UK.
The suspended ScaffFloat platform is built off-site and then lifted on to the water. Once afloat, the self-propelled system travels along the waterway to the bridge, even if this is miles from the launch site.
Once in place under the bridge, lines or anchors are used to temporarily hold station while a MEWP (mobile elevating work platform) on deck is used to make the connections to the underside of the bridge. A hoisting system is then used to lift the platform up under the bridge together with a payload of equipment, plant, materials, and scaffold.
Bracing is then applied to stop sway and the scaffold can be quickly and safely punched up from the ScaffFloat beams to give access to the top side of the bridge for contractors.
Encapsulation or netting can be added to capture any paint or debris released during the planned works. When works are complete the platform can then be lowered to the water and re-positioned, or if needed multiple platforms can be placed side by side.
There are an estimated 15,000 over water structures in the UK alone, from large commercial piers and ferry terminals to thousands of rail, vehicle, and footbridges over rivers, canals, and other waterways all needing continuous maintenance; work requires an access
system, normally a suspended scaffold, to be installed before works take place.
This innovative ScaffFloat platform offers several advantages to projects where traditional solutions may struggle to be viable; the ScaffFloat can offer a much lower cost access solution than a full scaffold, is quicker to install – it can be mobilised by a 4-person team, launched, and lifted under the bridge in 2 days, reduces disruption to the top side of the bridge - particularly useful in city centre locations, workers are always working within full TG20 compliant edge protection, and the system can be designed so that there is always sufficient space on navigable channels for vessels to pass beneath.
Toby Budd, MD of ScaffFloat said, “ScaffFloat has come a long way since it was launched two years ago. The system has really proved itself now and we have completed over 50 projects and provided 5,000 hours of safe floating access to contractors around the UK and abroad. This suspended offering is another big step forward for the system, really exciting.”
“We are specialists in floaty things and recognise where our strength lies. This is why we now partner with Richter and 48.3 Scaffold Design on projects, they do what they are good at: making sure the design meets all industry standards and if necessary they can provide a Cat 3 check, and we do the floaty and hoisting bit on site and make sure it all goes to plan.”
Globally the scaffold industry is worth over £64 billion and is growing by 5% a year. A recent industry report by KBV stated, “Over the projection period, lightweight suspended scaffoldings will acquire substantial traction.” which indicates this new offer by ScaffFloat could be popular given time and cost saving and safety.
“Negrinautica got everyone together to discuss their aims,” says Alex Newton-Southon, CEO - Technical RS Marine Group, “and then we gave a presentation on the Pulse, what it stands for and what it can do. Then we took the stakeholders out to experience it. We’ve been asked to loan the area one for the summer. We will. This will then underpin their confidence that the Pulse 63 is reliable and it is what they think it is.”
Newton-Southon says that although the strategy is being led by the north part of the lake, in reality it is likely to be adopted throughout. “I imagine they’ll want to replace all like for like boats in the area,” he says. “The Italians currently allow up to 40hp on the lake - and there’s a mixture of everything, as sailing schools, clubs, event organisers and police look to replace their current RIBs. The consortium was really engaged to see the future of electric boats.
“I’ve spent many years sailing in Lake Garda and to me it’s the best place in the world. To be able to support it with like-minded people with RS Electric is really powerful.”
“Motorised navigation has been prohibited in the waters of Garda Trentino since the 1980s and electric mobility is certainly a direction to take: the world of regattas itself is moving in this direction,” says Pietro Negri, Owner of Negrinautica.
He says the Pulse 63 was chosen to be showcased as “The electric transmission of the engine guarantees instant acceleration, control sensitivity and hydrodynamic performance on the water. Its simplicity generates low noise, low vibration, low weight and minimum maintenance.”

WHEN ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS
National Energy Corporation (NEC), a subsidiary of the state-owned National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago, has taken delivery of a new Damen Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) Tug 2811. Although not yet a requirement in the Caribbean, NEC has opted to have a Class certified Damen Marine NOx Reduction System installed.
The ASD Tug 2811, named National Energy Resilience in recognition of the role it will play in delivering low-emission towage, has also been fitted with Damen Triton, Damen’s in-house remote monitoring software. Triton gathers data from across the vessel and analyses it to deliver valuable insights into efficiency and operability to owners and operators via its web-based platform. For NEC, this will include insights into fuel consumption and CO₂, NOx and CO₂e emissions. Combining this data with its operational profile will allow NEC to optimize the vessel’s operating profile, potentially reducing fuel consumption by up to 15-20%.
NEC is making the purchase in response to the increase in oil & gas exploration and production in the waters of the southern Caribbean, with its duties including rig relocation and other offshore operations. Adding an advanced, low-emission tug to the fleet sends a clear message to its customers that it is prepared to invest in assets that contribute to a sustainable future. National Energy Resilience is also its most powerful vessel yet with 60-tonnes of bollard pull.
Michelle Scipio-Hosang, Vice President, Port and Estate Management (Ag.) at NEC, commented, “We take our role as a regional leader in sustainability very seriously, and actions speak louder than words. We seek
to align ourselves with suppliers who share our values and Damen has always been forward thinking and responsive to our needs and objectives. The National Energy Resilience sends a clear message to our customers that we take our leadership position seriously, and we look forward to working with Damen in the future on nextgeneration vessels powered by electricity and alternative fuels.”
MST ‘highly effective platform’ selected
Marine Specialised Technology Group (“MST Group”) has been commissioned by Damen Shipyards Group to equip the German Navy’s F126 frigates with special forces 12m FRISC® rigid-hulled inflatable mission boats, complete with transportation trailers and a comprehensive Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) package.
The FRISC® craft are the latest generation of MST’s well proven Fast
Raiding, Intervention and Special Forces Craft Series and will provide the German Navy with an enhanced combat platform,
Bram van der Plas, Damen Area Manager Caribbean, added, “We are delighted that National Energy Corporation has chosen a next-generation ASD Tug 2811 complete with a Damen Marine NOx Reduction System. We greatly value their confidence in our vessels and the support we provide. The choice for this vessel and the message that NEC has given with this purchase will set the tone for the years to come in the region.”
utilising state- of-the-art navigation and C2 command systems, to meet current and future military requirements. Ben Kerfoot, Managing Director for Marine Specialised Technology Group, said, “MST are extremely pleased to be working together with Damen again on this prestigious project, this time with Damen Naval on complex frigates, providing a highly effective platform against maritime threats.”

‘DISRUPTIVE CAPABILITIES’ GRANTED PATENT
YAMAHA SUPPORT EXPANDS
Expanding the support network available to Yamaha outboard owners along the UK South coast, a new Yamaha service centre has opened on the banks of the popular River Hamble.
Sporting Yamaha’s new visual identity and doubling the size of its business, KMO Marine Ltd’s new 1000sqft facility in Port Hamble comprises a sales showroom and workshop, while a fully fitted van workshop has been set up to efficiently allow KMO engineers to carry out mobile servicing and maintenance of Yamaha outboards anywhere along the South coast.
KMO is also looking towards the commercial market to offer Yamaha servicing and repowers to business owners to ensure their outboards remain in reliable condition and fit for purpose. Requiring reliable outboards for its safety boats to support student activities, the United Kingdom Sailing Academy (UKSA) on the Isle of Wight has just signed an agreement for the supply of Yamaha outboards for all its training, support RIBs and keel boats.
An autonomous ‘air-ground payload transfer device’ with truly disruptive capabilities for drone delivery applications, the “BMT SPARROW”, has been successfully patented by BMT. The novel concept solves fundamental problems associated with drone deliveries in challenging and sensitive environments.
Phil Metcalfe, BMT Regional Business Director for UK and Europe, commented, “Our patent (granted by the U.K. Intellectual Property Office) signals a new type of suspended robotic device... that takes over responsibility for the final moments of payload delivery, and better suited to challenging and sensitive environments. This small, highly-ruggedised robotic device could even autonomously collect packages as well as deliver them without the need for infrastructure on the ground.”
BMT SPARROW is fundamentally
different to winch systems commonly used in current trials for delivery drones. On a winch, the payload swinging at the bottom end of a line is raised or lowered by the cable drum attached to the underside of the fuselage, and moved horizontally by subtle movements of the drone above. This provides poor control of the payload, especially in windy conditions and limits the maximum height of the drone. In comparison, BMT SPARROW is located at the bottom end of the line with the payload with its own power, sensors and actuators; it has autonomous control of its descent using an internal drum, while making precise and immediate horizontal adjustments to counter wind effects using four small, quiet pusher fans. BMT SPARROW takes responsibility of the delivery, allowing the larger delivery drone to remain much, much higher at the destination, relatively unheard and unobtrusive at ground level.

The MFV ‘Copious’ LK 985, a new 24.9 m fishing vessel has been handed over to 60 North Fishing company of Shetland by Macduff Ship Design. The vessel is the first of a pair of sister vessels for the company and was built in Croatia by Tehnomont shipyard to a full design package supplied by Macduff Ship Design.
The vessel completed her delivery trip to Shetland, through the Mediterranean, up the West coast of Portugal, Spain and Ireland, arriving in Shetland on the morning of 14 January just in time for the islands fire festival ‘Up Helly Aa’.
In recent years Macduff Ship Design has been involved in tank and CFD testing of several vessels, developing an advanced understanding on how the hull form can influence both vessel resistance and seakeeping. The knowledge, applied to the hull of the Copious, ensures a vessel that can handle the unpredictable and often times rough seas in its fishing area whilst performing with optimum efficiency to minimise fuel consumption.
‘Copious’ is able to readily swap between single net trawling, twin rigging and pair trawling with all equipment needed for these three operations carried onboard.
The second vessel, to be named ‘Prolific’, is set to be delivered later in the year.

HEAVY DUTY SUPPORT FOR OFFSHORE WIND
Supporting Scotland’s growing offshore energy sector, Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS) has installed a heavyduty pontoon system in Eyemouth Harbour as part of the new operations and maintenance (O&M) base for the
Neart na Gaoith Offshore Windfarm. The bespoke pontoon system comprises a 58m x 4m pontoon and a 27m x 4m pontoon, both with one metre freeboard to match that of the vessels, creating a quality berthing facility for crew
transfer vessels (CTVs) serving the new windfarm which is situated 15.5 km of the coast of Fife.
With a capacity for displacement vessels up to 140 tonnes, both pontoons are connected to the shore via 28m x 1.5m access bridges and are topped with GRP decking with excellent anti-slip properties suitable for commercial application.
Illumination from high-level lighting further ensures safe working conditions for workers and CTV crews all year round, day and night, during the commissioning and ongoing maintenance phases of the Neart na Gaoith Offshore Windfarm.
“We installed NNG’s new pontoons in the busy harbour basin, on the marine side, during the build phase of the O&M building, which meant working closely with multiple contractors to ensure the project was completed safely and on time,” says Calum MacDougall, Engineering Sales Manager at ICMS.
“We’ve been delighted to be involved with a project that will bring long lasting benefits to the local community, businesses and the economy.”

Strategic Marine has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Purus Wind’s HST Marine to build three Brevity-class Crew Transfer Vessels for the UK-based offshore vessel owneroperator. The agreement binds the two parties to negotiations on a vessel building contract for the Chartwell Marine-designed 27m catamarans.
The Brevity-class designs, part of Chartwell Marine’s new offshore wind support vessel range launched in June
2022, are specifically designed to meet the needs of the offshore wind support vessel market and Strategic Marine has previously committed to build three vessels with progressive deliveries from 2024.
The high-powered CTV features enhanced manoeuvrability and stability due to its
signature hull form optimisation. This also ensures cost-effective and low-emissions operation via its hybrid systems, a growing requirement of the offshore wind industry and marine decarbonisation efforts.
The vessel has a capacity of up to 32 personnel. Multiple crew configurations enable flexibility in space planning and enhance comfort and crew welfare during long offshore stays.
In addition to the Chartwell Marinedesigned vessels in its fleet, HST Marine’s choice to work with Strategic Marine on more newbuilds soon after signing a significant contract to build four hybrid CTVs shows its confidence in the company.

PLANTING THE ‘GREEN’ NORWEGIAN FLAG
‘Team Norway’ will be planting the Norwegian flag for the first time at Seawork this year in the new Team Norway pavilion.
Organised by the Norwegian Maritime Exporters (NME), a member organisation for maritime equipment manufacturers and service providers, and hosted by Seawork, the pavilion gives Norwegian companies the opportunity to market and sell their products and services to international decision makers, gathered under the Norwegian Quality Flag.

location, all the support they need, guests and so on, instead of finding themselves in a remote part of an event in the middle of nowhere... all they have to worry about is marketing their services or products. Being in a cluster draws attention, so they get more bang for their buck.”
NME members range from large international corporations to smaller innovative companies and niche players, all sharing the common goal of making the maritime industry more effective and environmentally friendly in different ways through various solutions. They are determined to reach the sustainability goals set by the IMO and the UN.
Since 1995, NME has served as a vital link between Norwegian maritime companies and the global markets with one facet being the organisation of Team Norway pavilions at international trade shows.
NME CEO Erlend Prytz says, “We do it in a cluster of Norwegian – or even non-Norwegian, if they are showcasing Norwegian products or services – firms so that they can get a good
NME project manager Nini Paulsen says, “Norway has been at the forefront of today’s ‘green shift’ with decarbonisation and sustainability on the country’s agenda for a while. Having visited Seawork last year we decided it was the right exhibition to bring that knowledge to.”
“We have over a thousand years of maritime history, and I think most companies sense the quality Norway brings,” added Prytz. “This is what we want to showcase, and we want to do that by establishing ourselves in the city of Southampton at Seawork.”
The Net-Zero challenge needs a global effort across all sectors to achieve its objectives. SMI, working in partnership with Seawork, launched a new fourwebinar series packed full of information on the latest technologies and thinking to help companies and individuals play their part on The Journey to Net-Zero. Focused on improved vessel efficiency and sustainability on the run up to the Seawork exhibition in June, the webinars will be delivered by leading experts from industry and academia, and cover topics such as the impact of the new regulations and guidance, vessel integration and underwater radiated noise.
Vessel Integration
In April 2018, IMO members agreed on a target to cut the shipping sector’s overall CO2 output by 50 percent by 2050 compared to 2008.
Focus to date has been on the individual technologies and fuel debates, however, to meet the IMO targets the solutions will need to be integrated into the vessels. Challenges throughout the lifecycle of the vessels, from design and build through to the right way to enable disposal, are likely. To reach the 2050 targets and continue to manufacture ships for the future, it is imperative that all lifecycle phases are considered and that the embodied carbon is accounted for, allowing the correct equipment selection to be made. The talks in this session will provide examples of recent ship integration challenges as well as outlining the tools and decision processes required to understand the impact of the different options.

DON’T BLOCK THE PORT!
A major international waterway blocked to trade, pollution to a major waterway, serious injury or loss of life, and significant disruption to supply chains, were all averted thanks to swift action by UK Maritime Pilots.
The MV MOL Treasure, one of the world’s largest Ultra Large Container Ships, departed the Port of Southampton at around 1100 on 26 January, bound for Le Havre. For pilots Capt Christopher Hoyle and Capt Neil Dunn this should have been a routine act of pilotage; albeit one which only very experienced pilots are authorised to carry out given a 400m long vessel with the capacity to carry 20,000 twenty foot containers. The weather conditions were good although gusty, with clear visibility and a calm sea state.
An hour later, the MOL Treasure developed a significant reduction in engine power, and therefore manoeuvrability. Thankfully an escort tug was already in attendance, so with a further three tugs swiftly deployed by Southampton Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), the Pilots were able to keep the vessel safely under control within the navigation channel.
For 10 hours, whilst the Chief Engineer set about trying to identify the issue with the engines, Pilots Hoyle and Dunn used their unique understanding of the waters in this very tricky tidal area of the Solent to work with the tugs to keep the ship from drifting and grounding.
To ensure all personnel involved were fresh enough to carry out their tasks, the Tug crews were exchanged
and a third pilot, Captain Richard Harding, boarded the vessel so that the pilots could “tag team”; regulations demand that two pilots are always needed to pilot a ship of this size. Finally, shortly before midnight, after more than 10 hours with only significantly reduced power available, the MOL Treasure was safely manoeuvred back to port.
Without the skills of the Pilots working together with the Port’s maritime management team involving Harbour Masters, Tug crews, Southampton VTS, and the respective port management staff, the outcome could have been vastly different.
The United Kingdom Maritime Pilots Association (UKMPA), is the representative professional body for Maritime Pilots in the United Kingdom. Almost every ship entering or leaving a port, is required under UK law to engage a duly Authorised Maritime Pilot, who either boards the vessel in port or at sea and takes conduct of the safe navigation of that vessel. This undertaking is critical to protecting the country’s national infrastructure and environment from damage or pollution, supporting the UK’s economy, and ensuring the safe, timely and efficient movement of all trade.

Owen is currently acting MD for Cedar Marine (a survey, engineering, and sustainability consultancy business) and MCA authorised Certifying authority MECAL.
“It is vital that we decarbonise the maritime industry but equally important is the need to do it in an economically viable way for our maritime businesses. I am delighted to be moderating 2 sessions this year that will aim to really explore the practicalities of how vessel owners and operators can take steps to address both these challenges in parallel. Hybrid and electric propulsion is quickly becoming a key technology in the evolution of power and propulsion systems and can provide significant increases in capability and energy efficiency. Equally important is the design of the vessel itself and the choices that are made in the design and procurement phases that can significantly impact the CAPEX and OPEX costs of the vessel. This year’s conference promises to shed some real insight on how business’ in our sector are already addressing these challenges. ”
“The role of smart onboard solutions is expanding as the maritime sector digitalises and decarbonises. Energy costs, whether as low-carbon fuel or electricity, will increase and operators will need to deploy smart solutions that reduce energy use. This session will highlight some of the options available or under development.”

Gecko was formed in 1993 by Jeff Sacree who, when making custom surfboards for local surfers in Devon and Cornwall UK, developed a lightweight heat-retaining helmet for himself to prevent “ice-cream headaches”. The surf helmet proved even more popular than his surfboards and so, the Gecko story began.
Following the success of the Gecko surf helmet, in 1995 the RNLI came to Gecko Head Gear for a head protection solution to replace the motorcycle helmets that were being worn by lifeboat crews at the time. Jeff worked closely with the RNLI to develop an open face marine safety helmet that would meet their specific requirements. Today, this open face design continues to be the helmet worn by RNLI lifeboat crews across the UK.
Gecko now has a full range of marine safety and watersports helmets. The open face marine safety helmet is the most popular for commercial marine organisations. Alternatively, there is a cut away model for loud environments and a full face helmet for use on powerboats and jet skis. The surf helmet is a popular choice among surfers, surf kayakers, wakeboarders and kitesurfers.
Built to last, all Gecko helmets come fitted with the company’s patented inflatable liner, providing a perfect fit every time and keeping heads warm and buoyant when needed most.
Gecko has a continuous product improvement programme; designing new helmet models and improving the comfort, durability and versatility of existing ones. Happy 30th anniversary!
