UNLOCKING SUSTAINABLE CONTRACTING IN OFFSHORE WIND

Seawork is pleased to welcome Iain Grainger in one of his first industry speaking engagements as CEO of the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA).

In ‘Unlocking sustainable contracting in offshore wind’, Iain will explore the challenges and solutions to the creation of sustainable conditions for the whole supply chain, as it aims to meet government ambitions on offshore wind.

Iain has over three decades of experience in offshore marine construction, with his early career at Brown & Root where he was engaged in the engineering and project management of major offshore projects. He then moved into commercial, strategy, and regional leadership roles with tier-one contractors, including Acergy, Subsea 7, and McDermott International. Iain was previously an IMCA Board

Member and joined IMCA as a full-time member of staff as Head of Energy Transition. Iain was announced as new CEO of IMCA on 2 May 2023 following the retirement of Allen Leatt.

The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) is a leading trade association representing the vast majority of contractors and the associated supply chain in the offshore marine construction industry worldwide.

IMCA members play a key role in the offshore oil & gas and renewable energy industries, principally through the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of offshore wind farms and hydrocarbon production facilities, together with the ongoing life of field support and maintenance requirements of these assets.

IMCA is fully engaged in the energy transition for a sustainable and low carbon future.

Landau Marine wins NaxyX “Small Boats Support”

Landau is pleased to announce that the company has been awarded the “Small Boats Support” contract for NavyX, the UK Royal Navy’s Autonomy & Lethality Accelerator. Under the contract Landau will provide servicing and maintenance for Navy X’s MADFOX and APAC24 autonomous vessels.

As with all MOD contracts the tender process involved a significant amount of effort from the team to get the initial bid over the line;

with sales, engineering and operations all working together to complete the required documents. Feedback received on the tender response submitted was very positive with one of the evaluators commenting that they were “very impressed with the detail and quality of submission”.

As part of the initial scope of work MADFOX will be transported to Landau’s secure undercover facility in Marchwood,UK to undergo a refit this summer.

Seawork is pleased to Farra Marine is using Reygar’s BareFLEET vessel monitoring system to provide critical performance and vessel availability data to its growing customer base.

BareFLEET is up and running across the Dublin-based specialist operator’s entire operational fleet. Based on positive customer feedback, BareFLEET is also set for installation on seven more CTVs in build with the Penguin International shipyard in Singapore.

“Our ethos with the fleet is to monitor, identify, improve and reduce. BareFLEET has been key in enabling enhanced fuel efficiencies and improved passenger comfort across the board,” explained Martin Rice, Farra Marine CEO.

“We have been able to demonstrate the performance credentials of our ‘Windflex’ CTV design, backed up by real-time fuel consumption, engine load and motion data, to clients worldwide. Reygar’s system provides a level of transparency on how our vessels and crew perform that has supported us in building

trust and strengthening customer relationships. Of course, in some instances, passengers themselves make the call not to transfer on to the turbines. BareFLEET can still demonstrate that the vessel and crew fulfilled their remit in terms of vessel ability to transfer.”

Reygar’s technology provides comprehensive insight into fleet fuel use, emissions, machinery health, VMMS motion and navigational activity based on continuous on-board sensor measurements. By centrally collating performance data in one place, the system provides internal and external reporting efficiencies and enables effective, fleet-wide decision making.

Chris Huxley-Reynard, CEO of Reygar, explained: “Measurements and video from the system help companies like Farra Marine to meet customer expectations and contractual demands. Building trust with end user customers based on sharing accurate vessel performance data is one of the key benefits of BareFLEET.”

MONITOR, IDENTIFY, IMPROVE AND REDUCE

WIND POWER TO GIVE 15% IMPROVEMENT OVER CURRENT FLEET

Innovative marine engineering consultancy, BAR Technologies, and naval architects, Deltamarin, are to lead the way in wind propulsion innovation with new build design, Aframax/LRII.

The announcement of this latest partnership comes off the back of previous collaboration on WindWings which, with saving of approximately 1.5 tonnes of fuel per wing per day, will debut on the Pyxis Ocean soon, fresh from being nominated for the Next Generation Ship Award at Nor-Shipping.

Above deck, there have been great strides in design that harnesses the potential of wind propulsion; the next frontier, recognised in this partnership, is to complement this with hull forms modified specifically to maximise wind power. With this new hull design, BAR Technologies and Delatmarin’s early predictions suggest that as much as 10 tonnes of fuel per day can be saved with an Aframax/ LRII hull and 4 WindWings using a North America/ Rotterdam roundtrip as an example.

RINA PRESIDENT TO SPEAK AT WOMEN IN MARINE INDUSTRY AT SEAWORK

Catriona (Cat) Savage, the first female President of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) will speak at Seawork at the Women In Marine Industry reception on Wednesday 14 June.

Cat, who is Technical Assurance and Capability Director at international multi-disciplinary engineering and design consultancy BMT, said of her appointment at the time, “RINA has an exciting future, with the foundations being built today in development of our digital tools and online presence for the benefit of all our members and the wider maritime community.

“Alongside this, I intend that my term as President will see an institution that leads the way in some of the most important issues facing the Maritime Industry worldwide, including:

• Diversity in our community and demonstrating

the breadth and depth of opportunity to the

next generation;

• Thought leadership in innovation, environment

and safety through our technical committees;

• Sharing knowledge and maintaining standards

and excellence.

“All of these contribute to the original purpose on which the institution was founded in 1860, to “advance the art and science of ship design” and this is as relevant today as it was then.”

Almost a year on, hear how RINA is stepping up to the challenge and Cat’s take on progress so far.

Cat joined RINA as a student at Southampton

University and has been a member for over 25 years, fulfilling roles within RINA including Chair of the Membership Committee, member of Council, and a Trustee. She is also Honorary Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at UCL (University College London).

One of the inspirational speakers at the SeaworkConnect virtual event, this is a chance to now meet Cat in person, and enjoy a glass of fizz while networking with fellow industry professionals.

SPOTLIGHT ON SOLENT MARITIME CAREERS

FIRST TRIP OFFSHORE FOR FERNCOM’S APPRENTICE

Mia Porter, an Apprentice Project Manager – Engineering at Fern Communications (FernCom) has taken her first trip offshore to East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm. Cat, who is Technical Assurance and CaEarlier this year Mia completed her GWO training course at East Coast Energy Skills Centre in Lowestoft to prepare her for offshore work; this enabled her to embark on her first trip offshore with two colleagues to perform routine checks on FernCom’s equipment on the East Anglia ONE substation.

At 18 years of age, Mia is one of the youngest engineers to go offshore. Mia commented, “I had always been aware of the increasing presence of wind turbines in East Anglia as I grew up in the area but had never once expected to visit an offshore wind farm myself.

Young people with an interest in maritime careers can get inspired about the exciting options available to them at this year’s Careers Open Day at Seawork, Europe’s leading commercial marine exhibition, with support from Maritime UK (MUK) Solent.

This is the perfect chance for aspiring individuals to gain inspiration and find out more about the endless possibilities available to them in the maritime industry. MUK Solent has been helping to organise the maritime training and careers event on Thursday 15 June 2023, giving students from local schools and colleges an exclusive opportunity to engage with top-notch professionals working in the commercial marine sector and get firsthand insight into the industry.

Programme Manager at Maritime UK Solent, Lorna Wagner, said, “Maritime UK Solent is delighted to be supporting the Training and Careers Day at Seawork again this year, which proved to be a great success in 2022.

“We are so excited because well-over 150 young people are registered to attend this opportunity where those aged from 15 to 19 can find out more about working in the Solent’s world-class maritime cluster, to be inspired by the range of jobs available to them and get a personal insight into the companies in the marine sector.

“Developing a talent base for the next generation is a key part of the long-term

success of the maritime sector in our region. The Seawork careers fair is an ideal opportunity to bring together businesses and young people to showcase the wealth of marine career roles and help shape the skills needed for the sector to continue to thrive.

Seawork 2023 will also launch a new Careers Trail using QR Codes and exhibitors will offer advice, information, literature, and giveaways. It will also hold ‘Commercial Marine has Talent’ - a live showcase of speakers from the commercial marine industry.

Despite not being based in the Solent region, South Essex College tutor Simon Lofting attended last year’s Seawork careers open day with a group of marine engineering students. He said, “I run the only marine engineering course in my region, so it was very important that my students had this opportunity to learn about careers available to them.

“Attending the Seawork exhibition was a great way for the students to speak to suppliers from the commercial marine industry, watch presentations and to see marine equipment in its new state and out of the deepest darkest part of the vessel.”

Take the first step towards pursuing a successful and fulfilling career in the maritime industry. Register today and join us at Seawork’s Careers Open Day for a truly unforgettable experience!

“It was an incredible experience to see first-hand the sheer scale of a wind farm like East Anglia ONE and it has been really beneficial to gain this deeper understanding of the types of environments that I will be dealing with during my apprenticeship with Fern Communications.”
