One of Merced's many veterans makes their way back from the 2015 Field of Honor display located at Merced College. This year's event, run by the Merced Sunrise Rotarwy for the past 4 years, will enter their 4th year of helping remember the many families who have served over the years

W

ith the local Rotary club gearing up for their 4th annual Field of Honor display at Merced College and the Veteran’s Day Parade just around the corner, we wanted to take a moment to recognize those who have served our country alongside of our coverage of local artists and performances. Starting with our cover, a group of local veterans from every branch were asked to pose for a series of portraits, with the final portraits assembled into a mosaic depicting the Merced Theatre, an iconic symbol of Merced. These veterans, who came from a variety of backgrounds, both artistically inclined and otherwise, serve as just a small sampling of those who have made an impact on the Merced arts scene either directly or indirectly by helping artists continue to enjoy our freedom to express ourselves, be it through speech, music, paint, or photography, along with the many other rights the armed forces strives to protect. Throughout the pages of the October issue, we take a look at the resources available to our local military men and women, local artists who made their way into the Merced arts scene after returning from overseas, and upcoming events in which residents and veterans alike can celebrate and remember those who are serving, have served, or have made the ultimate sacrifice. — Jim Bennett — Combat Engineer, Paratrooper, & Shakespearean Actor

4

As a Combat Engineer who spent two years in Afghanistan disarming landmines and improvised explosive devices to provide route clearance and engaging in combat, Jim Bennett is no stranger to fear. Serving with the Army’s 27th Engineering Battalion and later as an airborne, Bennett first found himself in the armed forces after his child’s first birthday as a way to provide stability for his family, ensure a secure job, and a litany of personal reasons., but with every other member of his family having also served, it seems it may have been bound to happen either way. Bennett also noted that there are a multitude of other personal reasons that he had considered before making the final decision. “I wanted to know what kind of person I would be if I did that,” said Bennett. With every member of his family having served in the Armed Forces at one point or another, it was a nearly certain fact that he would find himself within the military at some point in his lifetime. “Our culture doesn't have a very good rite of passage, so you get guys who feel like they're missing something. Part of wanting to serve, for me, was the idea of it being a rite of passage,” Bennett recalled. “I wanted to feel like a real M A H

person who had challenged himself, went through hell, and maybe come back.” At the end of his tour, Bennett found himself coming back to Merced, and specifically back to Merced Shakespearefest. Prior to his deployment, Bennett had found himself involved with the theatre company since its inception. He went on to say that while in those early days he wasn’t the best actor on the stage, having only high school drama classes to rely on for prior experience, but he none the less found himself drawn to the performing arts. That all changed after his contribution to the wartime efforts. “There is a Seinfeld joke, that says at a funeral most people would rather be in the coffin then giving the eulogy,” explained Bennett. “What that joke is referencing is that most people’s number one fear is public speaking, and their number two fear is death.” Now approaching the stage with much more under his belt though, that fear has long since passed. “It’s still a scary thing to do, but it’s so much fun” mused Bennett, adding that he still of course gets the jitters that come from wanting to put on a good performance. “Being a veteran totally translates to wanting to do theatre, and putting yourself out there. Those fears from combat or other scary things you had to do translate over.” Currently Jim Bennet has just wrapped up his performance as Lord Berowne as part of Merced Shakespearefest’s performance of Love’s Labour’s Lost and has begun to look forward to his next performance during a stage reading of Coriolanus at the Merced Arts Center on October 18. The Shakespearean Tragedy is based on the life of legendary Roman leader Caius Marcius Coriolanus. For more information on the upcoming performance, follow Merced Shakespearefest on Facebook and check there upcoming events.

International Belgrade Artist in Merced Dob Francise to Show at Epekel Gallery

Local painter Dob Francise will be displaying work that has made its way halfway around the world inside of Epekel Gallery in Merced from the 6th of October until November 5th. Recently Francise was part of the a tour with the Belgrade Cultural Association that saw his artwork travel across Europe as he appeared alongside a selection of artists worldwide and appeared on art talk shows. Francise’s show, will feature work from the 2015 Belgrade tour such as “The Werewolf” and the “The Green Angel,” as well as new works that were created just for the new show. Francise, who primarily paints with an abstract style, notes that he finds that some who view his work for the first time have some difficulty looking through the painting, but goes on to say it just takes some time. “A part of the image 8

clicks then the overall work begins to develop and there’s that wow moment” said Francise. “I have been credited as to having "my own style" by master artisans in Belgrade, Malian, and Stockholm as well as others. That is one of the greatest accomplishments in the art world, so I continue to explore what my Style can become” Francise went onto say. Since Francise has been back in Merce, he has been hard at working alongside of local arts organizations, often making use of his background in the theatre by running lights and sound for the Merced Arts Center, local colleges, and Merced Shakespearefest. Currently Francise has been working on a much larger idea though that he hopes will put Merced on the art world’s map. “I am toying with the idea of An International Art Show here in Merced,” said Francise.

“I feel it would help Merced’s reputation in the world of art as there are so many talented artists in the central valley that need a chance to shine.” Looking into the future, Francise is looking to use the experience in Belgrade to grow himself artistic, and hopes to continue progressing and developing his style from looking to his favorite masters including Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dali. Other plans include a trip back to Belgrade, as while on tour he was selected for an audition in a film, and will making his way back come January. Until then though, Francise will be making use of his time here in the states to leave his artistic mark on Merced. “That is what keeps me going,” Francise quipped. “That and Strong Coffee.”

Annual Weekend of Music's Back for 5th Year Running In just under a month, the Monster Energy Aftershock Festival will be making its return to Sacramento with one of the largest lineup of bands on the west coast. Since the festival began in 2012, it’s held over 120 individual concerts and has been able to secure acts ranging from Chevelle, Stone Temple Pilots, and Jane’s Addiction to Weezer, Megadeath, and Bush, ensuring that there is something for every rock fan. In total there have been over 110 unique acts who have taken to Aftershock’s stages, and organizers have continued to expand the two-day music lineup, adding 30 new bands to this year’s lineup. With no signs of anything other than an incredible weekend

14

of music, it comes as no surprise that the local economy has seen a boost to the tune of $11 million since the festival’s inception, with as many as 45,000 rock fans making their way through the gates over the two days of concerts in 2015 alone. Now entering its fifth year, this year’s lineup tops out with over 35 featured bands for the October 22nd and 23rd event that will take place at Discovery Park. Some of the largest names on this year’s lineup include Tool, who will perform in a rare U.S. appearance during the first day of the festival, as well as Avenged Sevenfold, Korn, Slayer, Anthrax, and Zakk Sabbath. New bands to take to Aftershock’s stage as part of the 2016 lineup include Primus, Motionless in White, Anthrax, Suicide Silence, Disturbed, and Some Fear None. Filling out the festival will be a host of other attractions and activities to look for in-between the stage times. For those festival goers over 21, they can get a “Taste of Tennessee” from the Jack Daniel’s Experience as they make their way through a mobile museum that allows them to see and smell the famous whiskey

as it drips through charcoal and the oak barrels used in the process. The Keep Golf Metal movement will give attendees the chance to play 9 holes of putt putt style golf that fuses rock and golf together. Those looking to help make a lasting change to the community can make their way to the Take Me Home booth, where they can help contribute to an animal rights advocacy foundation and find custom gear that assists the organization in recuing animals throughout the state. While countless rock fans have been long awaiting the high-energy festival for months with tickets in hand, for those who have yet to buy their tickets to the all-ages festival, there is still time to do so. As of publication of this article, general admission tickets can be purchased online at AftershockConcert.com/tickets for the weekend of music featuring over 35 bands for $199.50. Those looking for a

th

5

general admission ticket for one day only can purchase their ticket for either day for $94.50. Those looking to purchase their tickets in-person can do so at their lock Dimple Records. Other amenities available for purchase include lockers that provide a secure place for your belongings along with a cell charging station, as well as parking passes starting at $15 for a single day pass or $30 for a weekend pass, to $30 for a single day premium pass or $50 for a weekend premium pass. by Chris Moreno Local live music is the heart of any city’s downtown area, and definitely a huge part of Merced’s Art Hop. This coming Art Hop of October 15th will feature lots of great live music. Check the schedule in the front of this magazine to see the map & schedule of what’s happening. There’s some great venues in Merced to catch some live music. If you’re looking for some live punk, rock or hardcore, check out Tigers And Daggers Records located at 621 W. Main St., where they have FREE shows featuring local & national touring bands. They also have an awesome selection of vinyl, CD’s, cassettes, record players & more. Check out when their next free show will happen & drop them a line at www.facebook. com/ tigersanddaggersrecords The Merced Theatre at 301 W. Main St. is really bringing some great artists to our area, coming off the heels of SOLD OUT Aaron Lewis show at the end of September, they have a great venue that serves snacks, refreshments and adult beverages in one of Merced’s most historic & beautiful venues. Check their full schedule out & grab tickets at www. mercedtheater.org An underrated & under used venue in my opinion is the Bangkok Thai Restaurant located in the side parking lot of 235 W. Main St. in Merced. I remember playing that venue about 16

M A H

10 years ago, and always thought it was a cool stage & atmosphere in there, glad they are doing shows there again. We recently saw The Beatles Project there and it was great getting some chicken satays and having some beers while enjoying a live band. Check them out at www.facebook. com/Bangkok-Thai- Restaurant A perfect downtown scene is always at 510 Bistro located at 510 W. Main St. in Merced. They frequently feature live jazz on their outdoor patio in Bob Hart Square. With the fountain, green grass & pleasant atmosphere, 510 Bistro is one of the only live outdoor music venues in Merced that serves some of the best food in town. They’ve also been known to close off the main dining room & feature DJ’s during the holiday season. Check out their upcoming events at www.facebook.com/FiveTen- Bistro If you keep going down Main Street past R, you’ll run in to the Star Club located at 1331 W. Main St. This is a cool music venue that usually features bands Friday & Saturday nights, but it’s also the new home of Jam Night in Merced for ALL local musicians looking to play. Every Wednesday starting at 7pm, musicians are free to bring their instruments & amps and jam out with the band. If you need more info on Jam Night or their schedule, check out www.

facebook.com/star.club.980 Gottschalks Music Center always has some of the best deals in town for music instruments, drums, amps & more. They also have local bands during the Art Hop, check out who’s gonna be out there this month at www.facebook. com/Gottschalk- Music-Center & www. gottschalkmusiccenter.com Another great venue that features live music in Merced is Kewl Cats located at 1111 Motel Dr. Not only do they have live bands usually every weekend, they also have DJ’s, Karaeoke & lots more for the music lovers here in the central valley. Check them out on Facebook & www.kewlcats.net Even though it’s out of the way, the Hangar BBQ located at 26 Macready Dr. by the Merced Airport is worth mentioning when it comes to outdoor live music. I’ve seen a couple shows out there & they have been getting some great shows lately and also serve some good food & drinks. Great outdoor stage with seating outside, a bonfire usually burning when it’s chilly, an overall great place to see live music in Merced. Check them out on Facebook or www. HangarBBQ.com If you are a business owner that features live music or would

like to start featuring live music at your business, please email us at TheGarageRockShow@gmail.com and we will try to feature you next time! We can also get you in touch with some local bands that would love to play. LOCAL BANDS!! If you are a local band that would like to get played on 105.7 FM & 1660 AM, we have our specialty show The Garage every Saturday night from 6pm-7pm that features new underground tracks from the rock & alternative specialty charts. We also try and put together local band episodes that coincide with the Merced Art Hop every 3 months. If we get enough submissions to fill the hour, we’ll spin a local band episode every Art Hop at 6pm. For local band submissions, email MP3’s clean & edited ASAP to TheGarageRockShow@gmail. com. EDM Sam Fuerte Raving since: 2014 Favorite EDM Genres: Bass House, Deep House, Trap Hello again readers! These past few months I have gone to both Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) Las Vegas and HARD Summer in Fontana, it has definitely been a summer to remember. Here is my review of both of those festivals: Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas: 9 out of 10

As soon as I walked into the Las Vegas Motor Speedway I was already in awe of everything I saw around me, it was beyond my expectations of how it would look, it definitely blew last year’s setup out of the water. And mind you I was seeing this during the day, at night it was a whole other concrete jungle. My senses were stimulated by all of the colors and lights that were going off at each stage and each art installation throughout the area. You could feel the bass just waving through your body at the stages and it felt so good. The people I ran into around the festival were all in a world of their own so I did not really get to interact with too many new people, however I could still feel that the vibes were high when it came to caring for somebody in need, if anybody 18

M A H

did not seem well everybody around them would make sure that person was okay by offering them fresh air and water. A lot of DJ’s this year had special guests join them such as: Soulja Boy, Skrillex, Timmy Trumpet, Kayzo, amongst many others at numerous stages throughout. The only downsides I experienced from this festival were crowded, long lines at the water stations, repetitive songs (could have just been because I went and saw DJ’s in similar genres) and the speakers going out a few times at different DJ sets. Overall, it is a very great festival that I would definitely recommend for anybody to go to at least once in their lifetime. After freshly coming from EDC I had my expectations set high for the production at HARD Summer, however it was not as I had hoped. While EDC made their stages look like art installations, HARD Summer went with a simpler design made entirely of what looked like steel poles, speakers, and big screens. I have to say I was not too impressed by the stage setup, however once me and my crew started going to the DJ sets it became an entirely different experience. We started out at a smaller stage setup underneath a long tent, and the moment we got in people greeted us and tried to get us up to beat with the music. The people at this festival were by far the happiest and most interactive I have been around from any event I have gone to. HARD Summer: 8 out of 10

From that point I was not worried about what the place looked like, I was having the time of my life being around people whose vibes were through the roof. From synced crowd movements to mosh pits there was never a dull moment at the stages, and there were so many water stations that we were able to keep hydrated in the heat of the day with ease. All of the songs I heard were original and not repetitive, which I was happy about. It gets boring hearing the same song over and over again. Since it is more of a “music festival” there was a mix of music genres ranging from EDM to Rap to Alternative Dance. If you are wanting to get into the feel of listening to EDM or are wanting to go to a festival for the first time, I would highly recommend this festival to beginners, you will not be disappointed with the outcome. FESTIVAL SEASON IS NOT DEAD! So now that you know a little bit about those festivals, here are some events I recommend going to that will be coming up before the year ends: Price Range: $ = $10 - $20 $$ = $30 - $70
