Today, in the Artipelag art museum, Mercedes-Benz celebrated the world premiere of the new, fully-electric EQC (combined power consumption: 22.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km, provisional figures)1. Dieter Zetsche presented the first Mercedes-Benz model under the product and technology brand EQ to over 600 invited guests. As a purely battery-electrically powered vehicle, the EQC stands for an impressive combination of comfort, quality and day-to-day suitability. In visual terms the crossover SUV is the front-runner for an avantgarde electric look. Not only the protagonist itself, but also the location for the world premiere was a statement for sustainability. The Artipelag museum is surrounded by forest on the banks of Stockholm's skerries, and embodies the link between art and nature – it is an extraordinary and apt location for the departure into a new era of mobility at Mercedes-Benz. "The EQC brings design, functionality and service together in a unique way. It offers day-to-day suitable e-mobility in a very special package: the EQC is an electric car, and at the same time 100 percent a Mercedes," says Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Cars. With its seamless, clear design and colour highlights typical of the brand, the EQC is the front-runner for an avantgarde electric look while embodying progressive luxury with its design idiom. With respect to quality, safety and comfort, the EQC is the Mercedes-Benz among electric vehicles and immediately impresses with the sum of its attributes. These are accompanied by dynamic performance, thanks to two electric motors at the front and rear axles with a combined output of 300 kW (provisional figure)2. Thanks to a sophisticated operating strategy, an electric driving range of more than 450 km according to NEDC (provisional figure)2 is possible. EQ also offers comprehensive services with Mercedes me, and makes electromobility convenient and suitable for day-to-day motoring. Before the actual reveal, the guests were given all the background and details related to the EQC. Britta Seeger, Ola Källenius and Markus Schäfer e.g. moderated the EQ sessions on various topics such as development, design, safety, drive, the electromobility brand EQ and the production strategy for the new electric vehicle. Together with this varied and informative programme as well as with the unusual location, the inventor of the automobile showed that Mercedes-Benz is embarking on a new era.

nique in its emphasis on vintage fashion and classic cars, Goodwood Revival is an unmissable celebration of period style. Set in luxurious grounds of the legendary Goodwood Circuit, rare motors are displayed and raced, surrounded by an ultra stylish crowd immaculately attired in retro looks from the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Goodwood Revival is also the only key fashion event that happens alongside a fully fledged classic auto show. With over 3000 pre-1970s cars on display, those attending get the thrill of seeing rare vintage automobiles such as Jaguar E-Types, Aston Martins and naturally Mercedes-Benz - all adding to the general glamour of the event. At Goodwood Revival, styling is as vital as the rev of a finely tuned engine. Although you won’t be turned away if you aren’t in vintage, most visitors choose to embrace the theme, the smartest of whom can earn a spot on the best-dressed shortlist. Getting the Goodwood Revival look is easy: you just need to choose your era. Whilst the sights of the visitors are often amazing and classically impressive, Steve Osmond, takes us on a photographic journey with his eagle eye on all things Mercedes-Benz.

his year was extra special because they were celebrating 20 years since the Goodwood Road Racing Club and the Revival was founded. You talk to anybody from over the world and they say, the Revival and the Festival of speed, (earlier this year) are un-beatable events. This year the Earls Court Motor Show had a special display of cars and bikes directly connected to the Hollywood silver screen legend Steve McQueen The parades were great fun as well as marking 70 years of British Railways along with 70 years of the Austin FX3 Taxi, and a fantastic Spitfire display in the air along with other static planes. The event also honoured 60 years of the Hula Hoop. Over the Road was a traditional funfair, literally across the bridge from the circuit, complete with an old-school big wheel, helter-skelter and carousel. Butlin’s were be rolling back the years for their seventh year, offering free roller-skating to visitors in the Butlin’s Ballroom, styled exactly as it would have been in a 1950s Butlin’s Resort. Redcoats were entertaining the children as well, encouraging games such as ‘limbo' and ‘follow the leader’

owerful V8 engines, thrilling driving dynamics and distinct design have made the MercedesAMG C 63 model range a bestseller. The Saloon, Estate, Coupé and now feature a sharper exterior, a modernised interior and even more agility. The fast-shifting AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission, the electronically controlled rear-axle differential, and the nine-stage AMG TRACTION CONTROL (in the C 63 S) take longitudinal and lateral dynamics to a new level. AMG DYNAMICS enhances driving pleasure, too: this built-in dynamic handling control extends the functions of the ESP®, allowing precisely measured torque distribution on the rear

axle (Torque Vectoring), which increases agility while maintaining a high level of stability. The new C 63 has a more emotive look, too: the AMG-specific radiator trim underscores the brand identity while emphasising the muscular appearance. The interior benefits from an optional fully digital cockpit with unmistakable AMG displays and the new generation of AMG steering wheels. The C 63 is the bedrock of MercedesAMG. Drivers and fans love it because it is one of a kind in its segment. Its signature feature is the immensely powerful eightcylinder engine ‑ no other model in the competitive environment can pick from such an embarrassment of riches. The V8

is an unshakeable part of the AMG brand identity. The rear-wheel drive, the AMGspecific suspension and the athletic overall appearance likewise set the C 63 apart from its competitors. It also offers a wealth of individualisation options, including four body versions, two output variants and an extensive range of optional extras. [1] The stated figures were determined in accordance with the prescribed measuring method. These are the "NEDC CO2 figures" according to Art. 2 No. 1 Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/1153. The fuel consumption figures were calculated based on these figures. "The AMG C-Class is our best-selling model series and therefore a key cornerstone

of our company's success of recent years. We have therefore increasingly expanded our C-Class offer: customers can now choose between twelve models from the C-Class family. As part of the latest facelift, we have upgraded all variants of the model series even more substantially," says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "This relates to the 43-series models and especially, of course, to the AMG C 63. The perfected driving dynamics and expressive design underscore the powerful, muscular character of the rearwheel-drive icon." The comprehensive model update includes a raft of measures with one thing in mind above all: to further sharpen the longitudinal and lateral dynamics. One of the new features in the C 63 is the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission with wet start-off clutch (previously 7-speed transmission). It allows faster bursts of speed and more spontaneous responses to the driver's accelerator pedal input. In addition, the rear-axle limitedslip differential fitted as standard is now electronically controlled on all versions, allowing more precise traction control. AMG TRACTION CONTROL (in the C 63 S) enables the slip on the rear axle to be controlled in nine stages, which keen drivers should appreciate, especially when driving on the race track and under changeable road conditions. The new, integrated dynamic handling control system AMG DYNAMICS enhances driving enjoyment, too.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission with shorter shift times The C 63 now makes use for the first time of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission, which the Mercedes-AMG developers have tuned specifically for a dynamic driving experience. A wet start-off clutch replaces the torque converter. This saves weight and optimises the response to

the driver's accelerator pedal input, particularly during acceleration and load changes. The multiple downshift function allows more spontaneous bursts of speed, while the double-declutching function in the "Sport" and "Sport+" drive programs makes for an even more emotive driving experience. Defined ignition adjustments also provide faster gear shifts in the other modes. In all modes moving off occurs in first gear in order to always guarantee a dynamic driving experience. "Manual" mode can be selected using a separate button in the centre console. The gear changes are based on the selected drive program, and the driver can now change gear using the paddles on the steering wheel. Moreover, the transmission stays in the selected gear and does not

automatically shift up when the engine speed reaches the limit.

Up to six drive programs for an individual driving experience The handling characteristics of the new C 63 can be modified by selecting from the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs: "Slippery", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+", "RACE" (in the C 63 S) and "Individual". This changes important parameters such as engine and transmission response, steering characteristics, suspension damping, and exhaust sound. The programs are selected using the paddle in the centre console and then visualised in the instrument cluster and on the multimedia display.

• "Slippery": the new "Slippery" drive program is optimised for slippery road conditions, with reduced power and a flat engine curve. • "Comfort": comfortable and fuel-efficient driving, e.g. thanks to very early upshifts. Suspension and steering are set up for an emphasis on comfort. • "Sport": sporty characteristics thanks to a more agile response to the driver's accelerator pedal input, shorter shift times, earlier downshifts and significantly more emotive gear shifts owing to doubledeclutching. A more dynamic suspension and steering set-up. • "Sport+": extremely sporty characteristics thanks to an even more agile throttle response, increased acoustic emphasis on double-declutching on downshifts as well as selective torque control on upshifts with cylinder suppression for optimal shift times. Increased idle speed for faster pullaway. An even more dynamic suspension, steering and drivetrain set-up. • "Individual": personalised drive system, suspension, transmission, AMG DYNAMICS and the exhaust system.

• "RACE": the C 63 S additionally features the "RACE" drive program for highly dynamic driving on closed-off race tracks, in which all the parameters are configured for maximum performance.

AMG DYNAMICS enhances agility and safety The C 63 and C 63 S both offer AMG DYNAMICS, a new feature of the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs. This built-in dynamic handling control extends the functions of the ESP® (Electronic Stability Program), allowing precisely measured torque distribution on the rear axle (Torque Vectoring), which increases agility while maintaining a high level of stability. AMG DYNAMICS optimises lateral dynamics and maximises traction when cornering. Particularly remarkable: AMG DYNAMICS calculates how the vehicle will react. To do this, the system uses the available sensors that detect the speed, the steering angle or the yaw rate, for instance. Based on the pilot-control principle it is possible to anticipate the vehicle behaviour on the basis of the driver's actions and the data from the sensors. The control system reacts in

this way before the driver can – and with no noticeable or disruptive intervention by the system. The driver gets an authentic driving feel with high cornering dynamics and optimum traction as well as high stability and predictable handling. Even experienced drivers receive optimum assistance without being patronised by the system. The different AMG DYNAMICS modes are named "Basic", "Advanced", "Pro" and "Master". The drive program selection indicated on the multimedia display now shows the new AMG DYNAMICS symbol with the relevant additional term instead of the previous ESP® symbol. • "Basic" is assigned to the "Slippery" and "Comfort" drive programs. Here the C 63 demonstrates exceptionally stable handling characteristics with high yaw damping. • "Advanced" is activated in the "Sport" program. The C 63 remains neutrally balanced. The lower yaw damping, lower steering angle requirement and enhanced agility support dynamic manoeuvres such as driving on winding country roads. • "Pro" (short for "Professional") belongs to the "Sport+" program. In "Pro" the driver receives even more assistance for dynamic driving manoeuvres while agility and precision when cornering are further enhanced. • "Master" is available exclusively for the C 63 S and is linked to the RACE drive program. "Master" mode is aimed at drivers who want to experience dynamism and driving enjoyment on closed-off circuits. "Master" offers a vehicle balance with slight oversteer, a low steering angle requirement and more agile steering. In this way, "Master" ensures maximum agility and fully exploits the dynamic potential of the new C 63 S. To enter "Master" mode, the driver must switch the ESP® to ESP® SPORT handling mode or to ESP® OFF using the separate button in the centre console. This is indicated to the driver in the head unit. In the "Individual" drive program, the driver can select their own desired AMG DYNAMICS stage: Basic, Advanced, Pro or Master (only C 63 S).

REVEAL: THE VISION EQ SILVER ARROW M

ercedes-Benz unveiling the Vision EQ Silver Arrow show car during Monterey Car Week, The event attracts car aficionados and collectors from all over the world. The one-seater vehicle is also an homage to the successful record-breaking W 125 car from 1937. The paintwork in alubeam silver is reminiscent of the historic Silver Arrows which, for weight reasons, did not have a white paint layer. The interior is dominated by traditional, high-quality materials such as genuine leather, polished aluminium and solid walnut. The digital cockpit, meanwhile, points directly into the future: It includes a curved panoramic screen with back projection, as well as a touchscreen integrated into the steering wheel. "Over 80 years ago, the historic Silver Arrows demonstrated that MercedesBenz was a pioneer when it came to speed thanks, among other things, to their streamlined shape," says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG. "The Vision EQ Silver Arrow draws on that legacy. Intended for acceleration and driving pleasure, it embodies progressive luxury and provides an insight into the future of our design. As a result, the show car drives the design idiom of our new EQ product and technology brand to the top." The EQ brand is shaped by the avantgarde, distinct aesthetic of Progressive Luxury. This arises from the combination of

a previously unknown beauty, the conscious clash of digital and analogue elements as well as the seamless merging of intuitive and physical design.

Exterior: sporty silhouette With its clear, seamless design, the design idiom of the Vision EQ Silver Arrow is a brand-specific embodiment of the design philosophy of Sensual Purity. The streamlined silhouette of the approximately 5.3-metre long and approximately one metre shallow one-seater vehicle is slender yet sensuous. The show car's body structure is made of carbon fibre. The multiple layers of paintwork in alubeam silver appear like liquid metal over the top. This concept represents the design polar opposites of "hot" and "cold". Functional attachment parts made of carbon fibre such as the front splitter epitomise the cool and rational aspect of this philosophy. The same applies to the front trim designed as a display, as well as the continuous lighting strip at the front. The side skirts also feature a lighting strip and the large, recessed EQ lettering in front of the rear wheels is illuminated blue as is characteristic of the brand. Other highlights include the driver's cockpit, which can be folded forwards, and the partially free-standing multi-spoke wheels. The non-rotating hub caps and the partial trim on the wheels are other stylish and innovative highlights. The 168

spokes per wheel are made of lightweight aluminium and are painted a rose gold colour as is typical for EQ. Offering exceptional traction and correspondingly fast acceleration, the Vision EQ Silver Arrow has slick 255/25 R 24 tyres at the front and 305/25 R 26 tyres at the rear. Attesting to the attention to detail, tyre partner Pirelli has helped to realise a star pattern on the tread. The rear diffuser is reminiscent of motorsport. Two extendible rear spoilers act as an air brake by increasing the wind resistance when deceleration is desired.

Interior: between tradition and modernity The interior of the Vision EQ Silver Arrow represents the values of Progressive Luxury. The design idiom combines timeless aesthetic appeal with futuristic visions. When the driver's cockpit is folded forwards, it provides a view of the surprisingly wide interior. A contrast brings it to life: On the one hand, it uses traditional, high-quality materials. These include saddle brown genuine leather on the seat and steering wheel, polished aluminium throughout the interior and solid walnut with darker coniferous wood pinstripes on the floor. This creates a bridge back to the historic racing cars of the Silver Arrow era. On the other hand, modern, hightech solutions such as the large projection

surface for the panoramic screen and innovative user experience solutions such as the virtual race option (see below) represent the EQ's typically visionary character. This contrast is an intentional merging of past and future. The sitting surface and backrest have an unusual pattern which is aligned with the seat contour: Stars have been stitched in with the help of laser engraving. AIRSCARF neck-level heating is integrated into the seat. A four-point seatbelt inspired by motorsport holds the driver securely in place. The pedals can be adapted to the driver's specific stature, with a controller located on the seat for adjusting the pedals. To match the exterior paint finish in alubeam silver, the side walls of the interior are covered in a luxurious, grey suede.

Double screen and virtual racing The driver of the Vision EQ Silver Arrow is encompassed by a large panoramic screen on which a 3D image of the surroundings is projected from behind. As a pointer to future possible charging technologies, the lane of the roadway on which inductive charging is possible is superimposed onto the screen. With the help of artificial intelligence it is possible to engage in a virtual race against historic or present Silver Arrow racing cars. For this a virtual racetrack is superimposed onto the real roadway on the panoramic screen and the driver sees their opponent either ahead of them or behind them as a "ghost". The Virtual Race Coach assistance function helps you become a better driver by giving instructions during the race. There is also a touchscreen on the steering wheel. he Mercedes-Benz Museum and the ALL TIME STARS vehicle trading organisation of Mercedes-Benz Classic attend the eleventh Hamburg-Berlin Classic Rally with numerous vehicles. This year the regularity rally for recent and older classics takes the form of a North Sea tour, covering six stages from Bremen to Hamburg from 13 to 15 September 2018 with around 180 classic cars taking part. Vehicles brought to the Rally by the Stuttgart-based brand include an authentic replica of the world´s first automobile, various SL sports cars, including a 300 SL Roadster, an SLC Coupé, a 220 D “Stroke Eight" as a pickup and an E 500 Limited.

Under the motto “Classics on course for the North Sea", this year’s Hamburg-Berlin Classic (HBK) Rally will explore Germany’s north-west. Departing from the harbour in Bremen, the regularity tour will take the approx. 180 old and more recent classics to the main fish market in Hamburg in six stages. Along the route are Oldenburg, the North Sea coast with the ferry ports of Neuharlingersiel and Harlesiel, Schloss Gödens, the artists’ village of Worpswede and the Lüneburg Heath. Four cars from the collection of Mercedes-Benz Classic will take part in the Rally itself. There are even two Mercedes-Benz 280 SL “Pagodas” to remember the premiere of this third and most powerful variant of the 113 series 50 years ago. The 280 SL was in

production from 1968 to 1971. The cars taking part in the Rally will have a sand metallic and a silver metallic paint finish. Another 50-year anniversary is marked by the 220 D Pickup (W 115). This versatile pickup stands for the highly successful Mercedes-Benz “Stroke Eight” model series W 114 and W 115, which premiered in 1968. Between then and 1976, over 1.9 million saloons, long-wheelbase saloons, coupés and chassis versions were produced of this, the brand’s first million-seller. In 1973 it was on such a chassis for special bodies that this vehicle was given its pickup body by a body manufacturer. It is an early ancestor of the current Mercedes-Benz X-Class.

The Mercedes-Benz E 500 Limited in brilliant silver dating from 1994 is a high-performance automobile par excellence. The 124 series high-performance saloon with the 235 kW (320 hp) V8 engine celebrated its premiere as the 500 E at the Paris Motor Show in October 1990. This exclusive model, which had a price tag of almost 135,000 DM when it appeared, was produced in close collaboration with Porsche. Only 500 units of the special E 500 model with an especially exclusive specification were produced. ALL TIME STARS, the vehicle trading organisation of Mercedes-Benz Classic, will bring two very different, sporty vehicles (subject to sale) from the current portfolio to Hamburg: a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster (W 198) and a Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC 5.0 (C 107). The 300 SL Roadster is one of the dream cars of the brand. The vehicle brought by ALL TIME STARS dates from 1960 and has just 640 kilometres after a mechanical revision on the clock. The colour combination with an exterior in silver grey metallic and a red leather interior is a classic. The Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC 5.0 is one of the luxurious and sporty luxury-class coupés derived from the SL roadsters of the 107 series. It had its debut in September 1977 as the new flagship model in the 107 series, with aluminium engine block, bonnet, boot lid and bumpers. In June 1979 the vehicle brought by ALL TIME STARS was delivered to its so far only owner, who rarely drove the SLC and cared for it lovingly. SATURDAYS RACE: A successful DTM return to the UK: the eleventh DTM race of the season at the long Grand Prix version of the Brands Hatch circuit (Great Britain) saw Daniel Juncadella secure his maiden race win in the popular touring car series. Having started from pole position, the Spaniard put in a faultless race and crossed the victory line as the undisputed winner with a margin of 7.896 seconds after 41 laps. “This is a victory we have all scored together,” he hailed his pit crew over the radio. “Really, really cool. Winning in the DTM is something very special.” Augusto Farfus came second in the race on Saturday with his BMW M4 DTM from Lucas Auer with another Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM. Meanwhile, things initially didn’t look too good for race winner Juncadella after the start. “I had problems getting away and I lost two places,” the Spaniard explained. “Then, I just looked ahead. It was like in qualifying, I only backed off a bit during the last five laps.” For the Mercedes-AMG driver, it is his first win in his 67th DTM race. A few weeks ago, he scored his maiden podium finish by coming third at the Norisring. Another driver who had reason to celebrate was BMW’s Augusto Farfus. After 825 days, the Brazilian finally took part in a prize-giving ceremony again. Farfus’s last podium finish to date was his second place in the 2016 season finale at Hockenheim. The BMW driver benefited from his track knowledge. “That helped me a lot. I have already done some races here and Brands Hatch has always been friendly to me,” he said. “I am so happy to be back on the podium. Today, we will enjoy the day and tomorrow, I want to repeat this.” Unlike Farfus, Lucas Auer raced at the long circuit for the first time. “The track is very difficult and demanding. Second in qualifying and third in the race is okay.” In the DTM drivers’ standings after eleven races, three Mercedes-AMG drivers lock out the first three

places. Gary Paffett remains first, having been able to extend his points’ lead with his sixth-place finish and now has a total of 156. Paul Di Resta is second with 121 points from Lucas Auer, who moved up from sixth to third and has 106 points. Tied on points (101) are Edoardo Mortara and Timo Glock in fourth and fifth place from Marco Wittmann (100).

A successful sixth DTM race weekend for Mercedes-AMG: after Daniel Juncadella’s maiden win on Saturday, Paul Di Resta was first across the finish line on Sunday. In the twelfth race of the season, his fellow Mercedes-AMG driver and points’ leader Gary Paffett completed the success for the Stuttgart-based brand by finishing second. At the demanding Grand Prix version of the race track in Kent, last year’s champion René Rast came third with his Audi RS 5 DTM. Di Resta already laid the foundation for his victory at the start of the race. From second on the grid, the Scot overtook pole-sitter Paffett after a few metres already and remained in front at the restart after a safety car intervention. On the opening lap, Augusto Farfus, Robin Frijns and Lucas Auer tangled and partly slid off the track, resulting into the safety car being deployed for three laps. For Di Resta, who scored his tenth DTM career win, today’s victory was a huge consolation. “The result with 16th place on Saturday was hurtful,” the second-placed in

the drivers’ standings commented after the race. “We worked on the car overnight and that paid off. Thus, I had a good battle with Gary today, just like in 2010.” Even though Paffett was unable to extend his lead in the drivers’ standings, he remains in first place. “I am very happy with the entire weekend. Yesterday’s points were important. They are making the difference between Paul and myself.” Having started from fourth place on the grid, Audi driver René Rast showed a strong performance in the closing stages of the race. Even though he was able to reduce the gap to Paffett on the final laps, it wasn’t enough to mount a challenge to Paffett for second place. “I didn’t really expect this result,” last year’s DTM champion commented. “Overtaking is difficult here. All in all, I am absolutely happy with my race.” Behind Pascal Wehrlein with his MercedesAMG C 63 DTM in fourth place, Marco Wittmann was the best-placed BMW driver in fifth. The winner of the race on Saturday, Daniel Juncadella was classified ninth behind Mike Rockenfeller, Philipp Eng and Lucas Auer. Nico Müller rounded out the point-scoring positions on Sunday. After twelve of this season’s 20 DTM races, Gary Paffett remains in the lead of the DTM drivers’ standings. The Mercedes-AMG driver is on top with 177 points from Paul Di Resta (148 points) and Marco Wittmann and Lucas Auer (both 110). Also tied on points, Edoardo Mortara and Timo Glock (both 101) are fifth and sixth.

for the car which after over 12 months, Derek received the call “I have your car Derek, would you like to see it?” Howard explained. Soon after the phone was put down Derek arrived and fell in love with the R107 and shook hands on his classic Mercedes. Derek plans on taking a road trip to La Rochelle to visit his Father soon. Howard Wise has been an enthusiast of Mercedes for over 43 years and fondly remembers his friend’s Uncle who bought a new 350SL. Over the years Howard has owned multiple Mercedes cars, which you would expect from his love of cars and running a successful classic and sports cars car sale operation for many years. Besides being proud of the cars he has for sale and the joy he has in cars finding a new home, his personal collection is very special indeed and lists virtually everyone’s dream car in pristine condition with the lowest of miles. In his current collection is his pride and joy, a 1958 300SL Roadster, 1971 280SE 3.5 Convertible RHD and two Pagodas both 280SL, one left and one right hand drive. His favourite 300SL Roadster is his most special treasure as he explains “He never believed he would ever own one!” Howard has many stories following his many acquisitions and interactions with his customers, though the story regarding a Pagoda for sale, in my opinion is special. Howard explains “An elderly lady phoned me from a classified advert in a magazine stating she had a 280SL that was her Husband’s for sale and would I be interested?” Howard is always keen to have a look if it sounds interesting, so off he went. Upon arrival, the elderly lady opened the garage to reveal a white Pagoda, which looked in perfect condition. Checking the milometer, it read 48,000 miles from new. Howard was adamant this was coming home with him, and arranged for the Son to meet up and finalise the deal which although there was interest from several other sources, Howard proclaimed “I will give you £5,000 above whatever anyone else is offering.” To his delight, Howard took the lowest Pagoda in probable existence back to his collection.

The perfect backdrop For those who have been to Howard Wise Cars, you will see multiple motorsport memorabilia and signs dotted around the dealership in Loughton, Essex. However, something was missing to accentuate the rear showroom, so who better to help than Derek and his business Magic Mouse LLP. Magic Mouse for years have been creating huge linen vinyl graphic wall displays. These range from tropical fish, forests, vault graphics over a set of meeting room doors and many other styles. However, the huge space some 16 meters wide and 5 meters high at the showroom is so big, the problem become what and how. After scouring the internet, a photo was found from the most unlikely of sources. A cyclist had recently taken a cycling tour in Italy and journeyed up to the famous Stelvio Pass in Northern Italy. Upon reaching the top he decided to take an understandable break and took a photograph of the road he was about to descend. The photograph was perfect but low resolution, so we needed to obtain the original, Derek explained. Thankfully the original was

traced so they could start fitting this iconic image to a wall of this size. After 5 working days waiting for the photo visuals and final hi-res artwork with a further 4 days to produce the linen vinyl graphics and onsite installation, as you can see from the images, the back drop looks superb behind the array of Mercedes-Benz cars on duty at our recent visit providing proof that “great scenery always showcases great cars” proclaims Howard. FILMING MY W211 E55 FOR 5TH GEAR MBO FORUM MEMBER ROGER, TALKS ABOUT HIS CARâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S DAY IN THE SPOT LIGHT.

ne evening, back in early June I was browsing the MBO Forum when a post from Jordan Livermore, a TV programme director from North One television caught my eye. To cut a long story short, they were looking for an unmodified W211 E55 in good condition to be filmed in a comparison test against a BMW M5 and an Audi RS4 of similar vintage. As the filming was taking place locally, I thought I'd put my car up for selection. Primarily I was a little concerned as famous race drivers Jason Plato or Tiff Needell could be rag the life out of my pride and joy in the name of entertainment for 5th Gear. Everyone has seen motoring programs that show more screeching of tyres than presenting and that was the last thing I wanted. I voiced my concerns along with my reply and was quickly reassured it would be Vikki Butler-Henderson driving, and all the cars

would be treated with respect and I wouldn't be looking for a set of rear tyres at the end of the day. I was satisfied with that, and a call a couple of days before the event to get registration details to insure the car on the day made me even more relaxed. Friday 22nd June dawned bright and sunny, and I was on the road at silly o'clock to drive to Haynes Motor Museum at Sparkford, near Yeovil, Somerset. First to arrive before 7.30am, I gave the car a quick wipe down and awaited someone from North One TV to show up. Jordan soon arrived, introduced himself and seemed happy with my car as it was. (Not so the black M5 that looked like it been through a dust storm and then got wet. One of the production crew ended up giving the car a total exterior clean). The Audi RS4 also arrived, and after coffee we preparation for filming.

Lots of camera equipment was unloaded from the SUV's and the three cars were positioned on the artificial lawn outside the museum entrance. The TV crew were fixing Go-Pro cameras both inside and outside the car in readiness for filming. Star of the show Vikki arrived and after meeting the film crew she came over to greet the three owners and have a little chat. A lovely lady who put us all at ease. It was at this point we were invited to have a photo or two with Vikki and our cars. Afterwards they got down to introducing the programme and what the challenge was for this episode. I was very impressed that Vikki managed to get her lines correct first time with hardly a glance at her script. With that done, the BMW was driven off to begin filming. In the meantime, my E55 was being prepared for the next run of filming.

Each car was away filming on local roads for around 30 minutes each, and as each car returned to the grassy area, they were being lined up with cameras on rails, bonnets open and had another good 30 minutes of close still shots. All too soon, filming was finished, the cars repositioned together on the grass and Vikki did the closing part of the filming. Announced which car she would choose of the three, but I won't spoil the programme by revealing which one it was. Lunch was offered and accepted, and our bank details recorded for refunding our fuel expenses for the day. All in all, an enjoyable day in the company of two other petrol heads who love their cars as much as I care for the E55. It's probably too late to catch live, but the series of 5th Gear began on Thurs 6th Sept on the Quest channel. I believe there will be four weekly programmes in the series, but at the time, nobody was sure which episode this film will appear in. Chatting to some of the film crew, we were told each car will get a two-minute slot plus the introduction and closing scenes. Blink and you'll miss it. If North One TV productions come knocking on your door to film your car, answer it and you'll have a memorable day.

ver 60 years ago, in February 1954, Mercedes-Benz caused a sensation when it debuted two new cars at the International Motor Sports Show in New York: enter the 300SL (W198) and a nearproduction prototype of the 190SL (W121). Experts and the public were equally enthralled by the Gullwing Coupé, an evolution of the 300SL race car (W194), and the Roadster, built on technology supplied by model 180 (W120). Today, the fascination with the first two production vehicles in the exquisite SL sports car lineage is more alive than ever. No wonder then that both SL models are especially valuable classics. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Coupé, the 190 SL Roadster, and the 1957 successor to the Gullwing Coupé, the 300 SL Roadster (W 198), count among the most valuable historic vehicles in the world. This is underlined by the presence of all three at the top of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Index (MBCI) published by Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI). Originality and authenticity are particularly important here. Some of the key indicators of how the value of the sports cars has evolved are similar, but the assessment by HAGI specialists indicates that there are significant differences too. This is primarily due to the number of vehicles produced, but other factors include the absolute value of the cars, their level of technical refinement and their historical significance, including the racing history of these models. According to HAGI, the average increase in value of the 190 SL is around 10 per cent per year since 1980. However, in the last 10 years it was even higher at over 11 per cent. For the 300 SL Coupé, the average since 1980 is 11 per cent, but for the last 10 years the figure is almost 18 per cent, which corresponds to a quadrupling of the value since 2004. In the case of the 300 SL Roadster, the rise in value since 1980 is almost 13 per cent. For the 29 Gullwings that were built with aluminium bodywork, cars which are seen extremely rarely in the market, an average increase in value of more than 16 per cent can be demonstrated. A vehicle’s performance is predicated on it being maintained in first-rate condition or having been superbly restored, both of which are associated with substantial costs. The main difference between the 190 SL and its larger cousins is its absolute

• Pioneers of the Mercedes-Benz SL tradition make excellent investments • MBCI ranks 300 SL and 190 SL as especially valuable classics price, which is not yet much different to that of a complete restoration. A perfect example is valued by the MBCI at just under the 200,000 euro mark. It’s a different story with the 300 SL: cars that are complete, but in poor overall condition, still trade for sums as high as 500,000 euros. With one of the rare aluminium-bodied coupés, the price is always in the order of several million euros, regardless of condition. In the MBCI, the 190 SL ranks directly behind classics such as the 300 SL Coupé and Roadster, the S-Series of the 1920s and the legendary 500 K and 540 K. It is also worth noting that prices for the 230/250/280 SL “Pagoda” model series W 113 are increasing massively. Investment in valuable historic cars is primarily

associated with the very top segment of the market for classic automobiles and the historic vehicle scene, which in Germany alone is worth 14 billion euros each year. Cars that are both very high-value and maintain stable prices make particularly attractive long-term investments because the increase in and retention of value adequately offsets the spending needed for restoration and ongoing upkeep. A study published by specialist German magazine “Motor Klassik” in 2013 also emphasises this relationship. Taking all this into consideration, investing in an alluring classic from Mercedes-Benz offers more than just the enjoyment of a piece of technological history, with its aesthetic and sporty dimensions. Indeed, it may also achieve a better return than other forms of

investment, with owners of high-value classic cars seeing their vehicles perform more profitably than many financial products. With its innovative space frame, the 300 SL was an exclusive top-end sports car at the time of its production (1,400 units built from 1954 to 1957). Selling at the time for 29,000–32,500 German marks, it was firmly positioned at the very top end of the market. From 1957 onwards, it was superseded by the 300 SL Roadster, which also sold for 32,500 German marks. A total of 1,858 Roadsters were produced up to 1963. The 190 SL came onto the market in 1955 and 25,881 of the vehicles were produced up to 1963. It cost between 16,500 (with removable hardtop) and 17,650 German marks.

FIRST JOINT PROJECT BETWEEN MERCEDES-BENZ AND AMG.

he Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG was premiered at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main (IAA) from 9 to 19 September 1993. The debut was the first highlight in a unique success story. For this highperformance saloon from model series 202 was the first joint project to be created by MercedesBenz together with the engineering company AMG founded in 1967. The Mercedes-AMG model range, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG since 2005, is now more comprehensive than ever before. This power package for the C-Class is a clear statement on automotive sportiness spanning the entire product range: By 1997, 5,221 units of the 206 kW (280 hp) high-performance saloon had been built in total. That is ten times more than the exclusive 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II of model series 201 from 1990 with similar performance data.The Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG delighted the experts and fans alike in 1993. This is also thanks to a history of passion for the Mercedes star dating back to the 1960s: in 1967 Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher founded their engineering firm for design and testing in the development of racing engines. In their free time, the two Mercedes-Benz employees had already built up racing cars on the basis of

series-production cars with the star. The sporty optimisation of customer vehicles for the road now became a second career. The letters AMG in the company name stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and for the place where Aufrecht lived, Großaspach. The two companies came ever closer via touring car racing, where Mercedes-Benz and AMG cooperate very successfully, in particular in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM). Then from 1990 they also cooperated on the development of sporty high-performance models for Mercedes-Benz series production. The C 36 AMG was the first result of this fruitful collaboration. In that same year there followed the performance-enhanced variants of the E-Class Saloon (W 124) and the SL (R 129), which were offered with a 280 kW (381 hp) 6.0 l, V8 engine as the E 60 AMG and SL 60 AMG. The basis for the C 36 AMG was formed by the Mercedes-Benz C 280, which was extensively revised in terms of engine and chassis. Instead of the C 280’s 2.8-litre variant of the six-cylinder in-line engine M 104, its 3.2-litre version was used, and was also to be found at this time in models such as the E 320 (model series 124). In order to increase the cylinder capacity to 3,606 cubic centimetres, the AMG engineers upped the bore from 89.9 to 91 millimetres and the stroke from 84 to 92.4 millimetres. The crankshaft of the Mercedes-Benz 3.5-

litre diesel engine OM 605 D 35 A, whose counterweights were turned and shaft rebalanced, ensured the very long stroke. During optimisation, the developers systematically used components from the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range: the brakes on the front axle of the C 36 AMG originated from the Mercedes-Benz SL 600 of model series R 129, those on the rear axle from the E 420 of model series 124. Many further refinements contributed to the successful overall concept of the C 36 AMG. On the engine these include the special custommade pistons as well as the reconfiguration of the crankshaft's torsional damper, lowering of the oil deflector by two millimetres, modification of the oil spray nozzles, a larger stroke and the modified valve timings of the intake camshafts, plus extended exhaust ports and an air intake pipe with a considerably larger cross-section between the air filter box and intake manifold. The engine management was also adapted to the changed parameters. All these modifications added up to an increase in the output of the 3.6-litre engine in the C 36 AMG compared with the 2.8-litre series engine by 64 kW (87 hp) to 206 kW (280 hp) at 5,750 rpm. The torque achieves 385 Nm at 4,000 to 4,750 rpm. All in all, the C 36 AMG delights everyone with its superior poise. This is also thanks to the suspension tuning, which finds a successful

compromise between firm sports car suspension and the more comfortable damper configuration of a refined saloon. And the four-speed automatic transmission also impresses – as testified by the specialist magazine “Auto Motor und Sport” in its 20/1994 issue: “It shifts quickly and unobtrusively, immediately reacts to kickdown and thanks to the selector lever surround it boasts effortless manual gear changes. On winding routes not only can this enhance the joy of driving; it can also increase the harmony of motion”. Equipping the highperformance saloon with traction control system (TCS) also made exploiting the engine output an acceptable pleasure with no regrets.

The C 36 AMG was in the initial stage of direct cooperation between Mercedes-Benz and AMG – an outstanding success story. In 1999 the Stuttgart group took over a majority stake in AMG, and since 2005 Mercedes-AMG GmbH has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG. Today the passion for performance with sporty top models characterises virtually all segments of the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range with more than 50 different models. Since 2009 the performance brand has also been demonstrating the high level of development expertise with sports cars developed completely autonomously, such as the SLS AMG and the Mercedes-AMG GT.

The powerful C from AMG in model series 202 of 1993 sounded the starting signal for this development. The flagship C-Class was an instant success and became the first high-volume production model in the history of MercedesAMG: by March 1997, the 5,000th vehicle had been delivered. Six months later in the autumn of 1997, when more than 5,200 vehicles had been produced, the C 36 AMG was superseded by the Mercedes-Benz C 43 AMG – the first C-Class with a V8 engine. In June 1996 the C 36 AMG started a tradition that continues to this day when the Affalterbach-based brand provided the official safety car in Formula 1 for the first time.

s the first Mercedes-Benz model launched under the new product and technology brand EQ, that features pioneering design details and hallmark colour accents. As a particularly striking feature, the headlamps and air inlet blend into a blackpanel surface. The high-quality interior of the EQC also pioneers an avant-garde electrolook. The innovative interior design is inspired by the world of consumer electronics. One example is the louvred edge of the instrument panel, which resembles the cooling ribs of a hi-fi amplifier. The EQC is fitted with 19 to 21-inch, aerodynamically enhanced, bicolour light-alloy wheels, which are flush with the wheel arches. Two-wheel variants have blue touches on the rim flange or spokes. The deep roof spoiler adds to the excellent aerodynamics and emphasises the width of the rear window. The transition between the bumper and tailgate is practically seamless. The multisection rear lights with tail lights in edge-light technology echo the light band at the front. The reflectors are positioned separately in the bumper. This allows a flatter, sporty layout for the rear lights. The multi-section chrome strip in the lower area of the bumper emphasises the visual breadth of the rear end. As in Mercedes-Benz coupés, the registration plate is in the bumper. This makes the Mercedes star in the tailgate particularly prominent. This is also used to open the tailgate and accommodates a reversing camera if corresponding optional equipment is specified. The model lettering EQC is located on the left of the tailgate, and has a new, EQ specific typography. The lettering is in chrome; therefore it harmonises with all paint colours. Interior design: Progressive design idiom, modern materials The high-quality interior of the EQC also pioneers an avant-garde electro-look. This applies to the form, material mix and user experience. There is a unique contrast between sensuous, soft surfaces, precise edges and geometrical shapes. Anybody seeing the EQ's design once will always recognise it again. The instrument panel is designed as a driver-oriented cockpit. Both in volume and complexity, its upper section is reduced to what is essential. The typical Mercedes-Benz wing profile is

This is where one of the visual highlights of the cockpit is located - a high-tech, high gloss cassette housing flat air vents with key-shaped, rosé-gold coloured louvres. These are a feature of the new EQ design idiom and are exclusive to this new model. The instrument panel has a metal surround reminiscent of the cooling ribs found on highquality music amplifiers. This design feature is a wrap-around extending into the doors. The simulated, metallic-look ribbed rim continues into the door panels as a design highlight and has integral mid-range speakers. This creates a harmonious contrast between high-tech aesthetics and classic door trim. The perforated plate feature is another repeated design motif. It is found e.g. at the top of the instrument panel support and in the mirror triangles. Round depressions of different diameters create a dramatic three-dimensional pattern. If a Burmester® sound system is specified, the mirror triangle accommodates the tweeter and has the familiar metallic look with a pattern of perforations and a key signature. The instrument cluster and media display (2 x 10.25-inch as standard) are housed behind a shared, continuous glass surface to form a large, free-standing screen. There is a touchpad in the centre console as a further means of controlling many vehicle functions. The ambience lighting impressively illuminates the instrument panel, with optical fibres coursing through the entire cockpit and across the deck with the air vents. The EQ character of the interior is accentuated by a brand-specific colour scheme that is unique in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. High-grade materials such as leather, plus modern trim elements in an aluminium look or with open-pore wood, convey the familiar, high Mercedes-Benz quality. This is further enhanced by innovative, newly developed surfaces. These include, for example, the finely woven “Sunnyvale” upholstery in indigo blue or beige, the slightly iridescent shade producing an elegant, high-tech sheen. In line with the environmentally friendly drive concept of the EQC, it is manufactured from high-quality recycled material. The Sunnyvale fabric lines the centre sections of the backrest and seat surface. The side bolsters are of man-made leather and have rosé-gold coloured topstitching. A new, ultra-fine surface structure is pleasant to the touch and extends across the beltline. Also new is a futuristic, textilelike structure in metallic

silver-grey. This is particularly effective in combination with the air vent deck in dark chrome. This new Progressive Luxury is further enhanced by elegant highlights in rosé-gold, e.g. on the vanes of the front air vents and in the instrument panel itself. These are produced by bending millimetre-thick real leather in rosé-gold and sewing it into the edging. The design and equipment lines: Electric Art and AMG Line The equipment line Electric Art has the design features described above with rosé-gold highlights. The Mercedes-Benz EQC is also available in the sporty equipment line AMG Line, with the options of AMG Line Interior and AMG Line Exterior. The EQC with AMG Line Exterior features e.g. an AMG-specific radiator grille and mirror housings in the vehicle colour. It also looks considerably sportier thanks to a distinctive front apron. A wide rear apron in an AMG design further reinforces this impression. Several new AMG wheel designs in sizes between 20 and 21 inches are available for the EQC. The interior also becomes sportier with the AMG Line Interior. In addition to a three-spoke AMG multifunction sport steering wheel with flattened lower section, the package includes an AMG sports pedal cluster of brushed stainless steel. The seats are in black ARTICO manmade leather/microfibre, with leather seats and carbon-fibre look trim available as an option. AMG floor mats round off the AMG Line Interior.

MERCEDES-BENZ CLASSIC VEHICLES AT THE PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE: SPORTS CARS OF THE 1930S FROM MERCEDES-BENZ Mercedes-Benz Classic exhibited two outstanding automobiles from the company’s own vehicle collection at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2018. This collection is unique in the automotive industry in terms of its importance and size. It includes spectacular racing and record-breaking cars as well as research vehicles and production cars from every era. The two vehicles on view at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance clearly illustrate the breadth of the company’s interpretation of automotive sportiness in the 1930s: the Mercedes-Benz 500 K Special Roadster from 1934 stands for the highly elegant aesthetics of a sports car, which the Stuttgart brand provided with customised coachwork bodies. The W 125 record-breaking car from 1938, on the other hand, recalls the numerous race victories and speed records of the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows in that era.

mercedesclub.org.uk Mercedes-Benz W 125 twelvecylinder record-breaking car, 1938 The original chassis of the twelvecylinder record-breaking car from 1938 will be on view for the first time in Pebble Beach together with a body newly built by MercedesBenz Classic. The original body is part of the permanent exhibition at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. The record-breaking vehicle was based on the Mercedes-Benz W 125 formula racing car from 1937. A legendary achievement in the vehicle was the absolute speed record on public roads set by Rudolf Caracciola on 28 January 1938: the racing driver reached 432.7 km/h on the autobahn between Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt over one kilometre with a flying start. That record remained unbeaten for almost 80 years. The presentation of the original chassis together with the body, which has been reconstructed to the highest standards of authenticity, gives a fascinating insight into the details that made the world record possible back then. They include, for example, the ice cooling of the engine, which made it possible to further improve the aerodynamics of the fully streamlined body while achieving a sensationally low Cd value of just 0.17. In the 1930s, Mercedes-Benz dominated the market segment of the international luxury class with its eight-cylinder supercharged cars. The “Type 500 with supercharger”, 500 K for short, came out in 1934 as a sporty and elegant top model of the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range and was available in eight different body versions. The crowning glory of all variants was the especially elegant and luxurious Special Roadster. With a price tag of initially 26,000

and later 28,000 Reichsmark (which could also buy a villa at Wannsee), it was also the most expensive version of the 500 K, with only 29 units being produced. The 500 K and its successor, the 540 K, became legends not just because of their superior power delivery, but also because of their ravishingly beautiful, luxuriously finished coachwork bodies. They were built under the direction of Hermann Ahrens in the special car construction department, which was newly

founded in 1932 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen. With their elegant, flowing lines and extensive individualisation options, the bodies made in Sindelfingen were so highly esteemed by customers that, out of the total of 760 customers who purchased a 500 K or 540 K, fewer than 10 percent opted for coachwork from one of the renowned coachwork builders in Germany or abroad – an exceptionally low proportion for a luxury vehicle in those days.

hat better location can you find in London than in the very heart of Leicester Square. Its known throughout the world as the beating heart of London’s West End, the square and surrounding area welcomes over 2.5 million visitors each week. Experience some of the best shows and theatres in the city as well star-studded red carpet film premieres and those famous street performers who make you gaze in amazement. Now there is something as equal to the glamour and buzz of Leicester Square, in the form of Hotel indigo London, 1 Leicester Square quite literally overlooking this epicentre. Tucked discreetly away, the cosy art deco entrance to the hotel welcomes you to the reception, in which the staff were on hand to explain all the details to the hotel. The adjacent lift took us up to the 7th floor where we were staying which overlooked the bustling square. A view to remember which allowed you to breath in and soak up that atmosphere in the comfort of this cosy room and full of all the required amenities. The Rooms come with a Twenties’ film and theatre theme with various Art Deco-style detailing that brings you back to the cinematic heritage of the area. These include photos, curved-corner furnishings and faux show-lighting. Amenities include Smart televisions, Nespresso coffee machines and complimentary snacks. Bathrooms have walk-in showers (no bathtubs) and toiletries by C.O. Bigelow.

Although it is all about the location, the facilities are more than adequate for your stay. Though the pièce de résistance resides is on the 9th floor. Wow, what a view…. This is what you are guaranteed to proclaim as you exit the lift and make your way around the bar to see one of the finest views in London. The London skyline includes London Eye, Nelson’s Column, Houses of Parliament, St Pauls Cathedral and The Shard. This is particularly impressive at night where the city lights up and becomes a truly mesmerising display of lights and action. The concierge staff are extremely knowledgeable about the area and can help with booking tickets and arranging itineraries. Elsewhere, the staff were distinctly personable.

The food at the rooftop restaurant which converts to a breakfast bar in the morning is superb in quality and comes in large portions. Despite being a refined menu, which feature classic burgers, steak and mussels. A starter of beetroot carpaccio with goat cheese and hazelnut dressing was artistically presented and moreish, and the panfried chicken came with delicious herb-infused gnocchi, sweet tarragon sauce and buttery shiitake mushrooms. Desserts include a large crème brûlée with a snappy sugar topping and a rich darkchocolate panna cotta with a layer of tart raspberry compote. Breakfast ranges from a continental buffet with pastries, yogurt, cereals, meats and cheeses, to hot options including eggs Royale, a full English and pancakes. Overall, this heart of London hotel provides a comfortable stay with a bonus of the roof top bar for both the evening and breakfast. A hotel I will be coming back to again and again….
