Daimler intensifies activities for a sustainable raw material supply chain and joins further initiatives. As part of the offensive for a sustainable raw material supply chain, Daimler AG joins forces with associations, organizations and competitors in a number of initiatives. The common goals are clear: certifiable standards, safe origins and transparency in the procurement of highrisk raw materials and a tangible improvement in the working and living conditions of people locally. By joining, Daimler AG is expanding its broad commitment to initiatives and is actively promoting greater transparency in global raw material supply chains. The company is thus taking another important step towards shaping sustainable mobility. Joining further initiatives complements Daimler AG's already existing activities for responsible procurement of raw materials and increases their impact. The focus of the initiatives is on the procurement of cobalt, steel and aluminium. A future step on the road to sustainable raw material procurement will be the complete transparency of, for example, the supply chain for battery cell production. Battery cells contain cobalt as well as lithium, nickel, copper and manganese. "The expansion of electro mobility places new demands on the automotive industry and especially on purchasing. We are aware of our responsibility in the procurement of raw materials and are pooling our strengths in these initiatives through cooperation with other business enterprises," states Sabine Angermann, Head of Purchasing and Supplier Quality for Raw Materials and Strategy at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Unimog – Firebrigade Extreme danger of forest fires - Kirchzarten fire brigade fights fires using the extreme off-roader Unimog U 5023 Due to this summers extreme temperatures, the danger of forest fires spreading to wildfires in fields and meadows - is very high. The Kirchzarten volunteer fire brigade uses a Unimog U 5023, which is particularly good off-road and on gradients, to fight forest fires in the Black Forest. Its high ground clearance of 450 mm allows it to cope effortlessly with steep angles of approach and departure and makes it possible to deal efficiently with vegetation fires even on difficult terrain. Kirchzarten decided on an Unimog U 5023 TLF 4000 pump water tender from Ziegler. The benefits of the 14.5 tonne all-rounder are clear, and not just because it is good off-road: a centrifugal pump able to pump out 3000 litres/ min. The 4000 litre capacity water tank with an additional 500 litre tank for foam ensures there is a sufficient quantity of extinguishing agents even if the nearest hydrant is a long way away. It is powered by the four-cylinder OM 934 engine (BlueTec 6) with a displacement of 5132 cc, an output of 170 kW (231 hp) and 900 Nm of torque.
Mercedes-Benz achieves new record sales of more than 1.35 million cars since the beginning of the year Mercedes-Benz already sold 1,356,350 vehicles in the first seven months of this year, which is an increase of 2.3% and a new record. Last month was the second-best July in the history of the brand with the three-pointed star, with worldwide sales of 167,518 passenger cars, despite several factors that led to constraints in the availability of some models. MercedesBenz maintained its market leadership as the premium brand with the highest number of new registrations in the first seven months in markets including Germany, France, Switzerland, Portugal, USA, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Australia and Brazil. “Never before have so many customers taken delivery of their new Mercedes-Benz in the first seven months of a year. Since the beginning of 2018, we have increased our unit sales by 2.3 percent to more than 1.35 million passenger cars sold,” stated Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales. “Since the market launch of the C-Class Saloon and Estate, more than 9.5 million of these models have already been sold. Since July, our new models of the C-Class family have been in the showrooms of the European dealerships, with whom we intend to continue the success story of our bestselling series,” continued Seeger.

MBO GO KARTING EVENT The Mercedes-Benz Owners (MBO) is pleased to “get those engines started” again on another popular Go-Kart event at Buckmore Park. The challenging 1,000m international circuit will see those attending sitting themselves into the 80mph 390cc 4 stroke SODI RT8 karts. This 30 minute session with initial practice session will flow into the qualifying session, with racers jostling for position aiming to get a better start on the grid. Once this has been calculated by the officials, the full throttle race begins. The MBO have secured this group event for Friday 28th September
Bosch and Daimler: Metropolis in California to become a pilot city for automated driving Bosch and Daimler are speeding up the development of fully-automated and driverless driving (SAE Level 4/5) in the city and are decisively setting the course. The partners have chosen California as the pilot location for the first test fleet. In the second half of 2019, Bosch and Daimler will offer customers a shuttle service with automated vehicles on selected routes in a Californian metropolis. Daimler Mobility Services is envisaged as the operator of this test fleet and the app-based mobility service. The pilot project will demonstrate how mobility services such as car sharing (car2go), ride-hailing (mytaxi) and multi-modal platforms (moovel) can be intelligently connected to shape the future of mobility. In addition, the partners have decided on the US technology company Nvidia as the supplier of the artificial intelligence platform as part of their control unit network. For the joint development of a driving system for fully-automated and driverless vehicles, Bosch and Daimler rely on their automotive expertise accumulated over many decades to bring mature and safe innovations to market. Both companies are guided by a shared philosophy: “The decisive factor is to introduce a safe, dependable and mature system,” says Dr Michael Hafner, Head of Automated Driving at Daimler AG. “Safety has the highest priority, and is the constant theme of all aspects and development stages on our way to the start of series production. If in doubt, thoroughness comes before speed.”

REWIND:
TRIPLE VICTORY FOR MERCEDES-BENZ SS 90 YEARS AGO
T
he official race debut of the MercedesBenz SS (Super Sport) ended with a dramatic triple victory. Rudolf Caracciola and Christian Werner won the third German Grand Prix on 15 July 1928 at the Nürburgring, beating Otto Merz and the team Christian Werner and Willy Walb. The Type SS, a development of the Type S, was successful particularly as a private super sports car at that time. It was a race eagerly anticipated by motor sports aficionados and the automotive industry. At the third German Grand Prix (Nürburgring) in 1928, the new Mercedes-Benz SS racing touring car had its premier. Two weeks earlier, Rudolf Caracciola had won the mountain race on the Bühler Höhe as part of the Baden-Baden Automobile Tournament with a Type SS registered as a Type S. The main opponent of the Stuttgart compressor car was Bugatti. Mercedes-Benz’s response to the light French racing car with its high-speed engine was the Type S, which had been so successful in 1927. Even the production version of the sports car achieved 118 kW (160 hp) from the 7.1 litre six-cylinder engine. With the compressor on, this rose to 147 kW (200 HP) at 3,300 rpm.
“Super Sport” Compared with the Type S engine, the Mercedes-Benz engineers increased the bore by two millimetres and improved the charge cycle. The Mercedes-Benz Type SS (the
abbreviation stands for “Super Sport”) was initially available only as a sports four-seater. Even in the German Grand Prix, the Stuttgart brand started with four-seater vehicles, with the rear seat closed off by a cover. The special four-seater (1929) and special Cabriolet and Roadster (1932), among others, were added later. The Type SS was primarily developed as a strong and luxurious sports car for discerning private customers. Externally it is recognizable by the cooler: this consists of eight blocks and is 42 millimetres higher than the Type S (seven blocks). In 1934, the highly exclusive Type SS special cabriolet version cost 44,000 Reichsmark – ten times as much as the Type 170 (W 15) sedan.
The blue spectre in training The German Grand Prix for sports cars at the Nürburgring, which opened in 1927, is one of the most important European racing events of the year. A total of 41 sports cars of various brands were in the starting lineup. Mercedes-Benz started with six Type SS vehicles. One mechanic accompanied each driver as the co-pilot. Driver Rudolf Caracciola knew the Eifel route well. The previous year he had won the opening race of the Nürburgring on his first attempt. In training he now came up against Bugatti, Mercedes-Benz's strongest competitor. Giving a news-style account of his memories, he said: “The car hurtled into the arena ... rocketed up Bergstrasse, which seemed to lead straight up to the sky, raising
dust on its way back down into the valley ... taking a number of S-bends at an outrageous speed suddenly a spectre, a shadow, a breakneck blue shadow, appeared next to my car.” But Caracciola prevailed: “Slowly, the mighty white Mercedes-Benz pushed ahead.”

Blazing battle in the Eifel On the day of the race, the sun was blazing in the sky – it was extremely hot, as the whole summer had been. “The thermometer climbed to 35 degrees in the shade,” said Race Manager Neubauer, describing the conditions. Caracciola has respect for his vehicle: he describes it as “the big, solid Mercedes-Benz SS, the largest and heaviest racing car of the time” and adds: “This German oak of a car was not easy to drive.” In historical photographs, a black band of paint can be seen on the white bonnets. In the 1928 German Grand Prix it marked vehicles in the class with a cubic capacity of more than three litres. The race was 509 kilometres long and consisted of 18 laps of 28.27 kilometres around the entire Nürburgring (South and North Loop). Caracciola kept on increasing his speed and reached 111.6 km/h in the fifth round. “Outright lap record. I was staggered by our twenty-sevenyear-old,” Neubauer writes in his memoir. But Caracciola's team-mate Willy Walb came off the track in lap two and his Mercedes-Benz crashed down an embankment. The driver was uninjured and made the eight-kilometre journey back to the pit on foot. On lap nine, MercedesBenz driver Christian Werner, winner of the Nürburgring opening race in 1927, dropped out of the class for racing cars with more than two litres. He had injured his shoulder. Willy Walb took over Werner's car, number 4 in the starting lineup, and continued the race.
Caracciola gives up Next to succumb was Rudolf Caracciola: in the twelfth lap he had to drop out – with blisters on the soles of his feet from overheated pedals and suspected sunstroke. He describes the ordeal vividly: “Tropical sunshine, blinded, fried by the heat, thirsty, weak – plus the tremendous weight of the car, which had to be forced through 180-degree turns on each lap.” Werner continued driving the Type SS, number 6 in the starting line-up, despite an injured shoulder. Then Caracciola took over again for two laps, before Werner finally drove the car over the finish line to win with an average speed of 103.9 km/h. In second place was Otto Merz (average
speed 103.3 km/h). He was in the lead in the last lap and only just lost the position to his team mate Werner because of a defective tyre. Merz, in the Mercedes-Benz SS, number 5 in the starting line-up, was the only one to endure the scorching hot five-hour race in the Eifel. Third place went to Willy Walb in Christian Werner's car with starting number 4 (average speed 100.5 km/h). As a result, Werner was mentioned twice on the leader board of the German Grand Prix in 1928. The success of the “white elephants” that day was completed by Georg Kimpel and Adolf Rosenberger in fifth place. In total, 31 of 41 vehicles in the starting line-up dropped out. And what about Bugatti, the major
competition of the day? “More than quarter of an hour passed before Mr Chiron's car came into view,” said Alfred Neubauer, remembering the distance between the Bugatti, which placed sixth, and Christian Werner's winning car. The official premier of the Mercedes-Benz SS was a sensational success for the “Super Sport”. The SSK (Super Sport Short), which was a further development with a shorter frame, took an even greater share of the racing victories of the Stuttgart brand at the end of the 1920s and the start of the 1930s. It made its début on 29 July 1928 in the ninth Gabelbach mountain race near Bad Ilmenau in Thuringia. The winner, with a new track record, was Rudolf Caracciola.

With its off-road chassis, multiple equipment variants and, above all, its compact dimensions which allow easy transport in shipping containers, the Unimog has truly impressed the Australian experts. Since this discovery, EarthCruiser has literally been building on the Unimog. The Special Truck meets all of their expectations, bringing users to the most farflung of places and offering intrepid explorers a comfortable home for long trips.
Australian explorer Home and away spirit meets the art of German engineering The combination of the Unimog U 430 with a motorhome body specifically developed for driving off-road results in a reliable touring vehicle with as much as 300 hp and which is ready for any type of adventure you have in mind: the EarthCruiser Explorer XPR440. The whole outfit literally makes it possible to travel to the end of the world. And all in a safe, adventurous and comfortable way, which currently knows no competition.
As standard, the camper is equipped with heated tanks, two lithium batteries, pumps and a water feed. The tanks are mounted on the chassis frame and can store up to 860 l of water and 800 l of fuel – together they make for a usable range of up to 3500 km. Two fridge-freezers with a total volume of 212 and 68 l, 24-volt electrical winches for weights up to 9000 kg at the front and rear, a 2.5-kg washing machine, air conditioning, microwave, a 240-volt outdoor BBQ, not to mention a chainsaw and an axe to round off the special equipment on-board. two single skybeds make dreams of sleeping close to nature a reality. While driving, it is even possible to accommodate five people in the off-road camper. Anyone wishing to add an extra helping of adventure to their discovery expeditions can also transport a motorbike on the rear end. In addition to the standard telematics system featuring satellite tracking, five externally installed cameras can record up to 45 days of live footage from your expedition and allow you to broadcast live around the world if you desire.
The right equipment for all requirements. The equipment of your EarthCruiser can be expanded to suit your travel plans: whether you need to ready the vehicle for ice-cold Arctic temperatures down as low as -40 °C or for the extreme heat of the desert and the tropics, weatherproofing options optimise the all-rounder to suit your personal requirements. A large range of additional features can be selected, among which are run-flat tyres, a tyre-pressure regulation system and a hydraulic 4-point lifting system for changing tyres or wheels. With as many as 140 functions on-board the specialist vehicle, system control is conveniently managed by means of an iPad touchscreen inside the vehicle. The EarthCruiser Explorer XPR440 body measures 4.4 m in length. But those looking for an even more compact variant,
mercedesclub.org.uk
should look at the XPR380 body variant which measures just 3.8m. Ex-factory, users also have the choice between a long (3600 mm) and a short Unimog wheelbase (3150 mm).
Fusion of two exemplary models. The Unimog implement carrier concept also features additional advantageous characteristics: VarioPilot® transferable steering on the Unimog U 430 makes it possible to move the steering wheel and pedals from the left-hand side to the right in less than 30 seconds – thus ensuring utmost safety, visibility and control, regardless of
where the journey takes you. The Special Truck additionally shines with an appropriate low-range transmission ratio for off-roading as well as coil springs and disc brakes, both standard on all four wheels. The truck is also available with either a manual or an automated manual transmission. Thanks to all-wheel drive, differential locks and portal axles, as well as short overhangs for maximum ground clearance and great approach and departure angles, the vehicle demonstrates truly impressive traits even off the beaten track. But it doesn't stop there because these characteristics can be enhanced even further upon request. The compact all-rounder can be transported simply in a shipping container in order to reach a destination of choice in which to put its special characteristics to the test. Let the journey begin!

THE BIRTH OF A LEGEND THE 300 ENGINE SERIES, FIRST UNVEILED IN 1949, WAS A MAJOR ADVANCEMENT • • •
A LIGHTWEIGHT DIESEL STARTS THE BALL ROLLING THE ENGINE FAMILY CAUSES A SENSATION WORLDWIDE THE DESIGN HOLDS UP UNTIL WELL INTO THE 1990S
A
false start that turned out well in the end. The history of the 300 engine series, launched in 1949 for light and medium-duty commercial vehicles, was certainly not without drama. Deep in the company archives were design drawings for an engine with the model designation OM 302 that had never been built. Conceived in the late 1930s, the engine had been conceived for use with small and medium-duty commercial vehicles and intended to power both in-house trucks and the Opel Blitz, a three-tonne vehicle very popular with the German army at the time.
Resolution to lose weight It was precisely in this truck category that Mercedes-Benz had one small problem at the time: the company’s three-tonne L 3000 was just a little too heavy. For the same ‘contingency weight’ of two L 3000s it was possible to manufacture three equivalent Opel Blitz trucks. The Opel Blitz’s operational weight was around 20 percent lighter than that of the L 3000, and the Opel Blitz was also a robust and inexpensive vehicle. Against this background, in autumn 1938 General Manager Dr. Wilhelm Kissel called for the development of a three-tonne vehicle that would be as light and as inexpensive as the Opel Blitz. The Gaggenau plant was commissioned with the order. From 1938 onwards, developers at the factory worked on the design of a four-cylinder diesel engine for light trucks. It was given the model designation OM 301 and was to achieve
the unusually high rated engine speed of 3000/min. By comparison, 2200/min was a more common engine speed at the time. Equally unusual features of this engine were its bore and stroke parameters of 90/120 millimetres respectively – dimensions that would feature in all light diesel engines manufactured by MercedesBenz for many years to come. “OM 302” was in-house code for the corresponding six-cylinder engine that designer Adolf Wente began work on in June 1940. The specifications were clear: as low a curb weight as possible, yet with a power rating of 80 hp and thus a relatively high rated speed of 3000/ min. By comparison, the standard OM 65/4 engine used in the L 3000 was relatively heavy and reached its 70 hp rated output at 2250/min.
Mood of optimism soon dampened “OM 302” was in-house code for the corresponding six-cylinder engine that designer Adolf Wente began work on in June 1940. The specifications were clear: as low a curb weight as possible, yet with a power rating of 80 hp and thus a relatively high rated speed of 3000/min. By comparison, the standard OM 65/4 engine used in the L 3000 was relatively heavy and reached its 70 hp rated output at 2250/min. The first prototype engines for the new OM 302 design were up and running in Gaggenau by as early as mid 1941, and in
1942 the Mannheim plant even presented a schedule for series production. Vehicle testing was carried out in both the Opel Blitz and the company’s own 1.5-tonne vehicle since the intention from the outset was to use this engine also in the Opel Blitz. However, hopes were dashed when the German army stationed in the Caucasus came into possession of petrol supplies and the freezing Russian winter greatly dampened demand for diesel engines. At any rate, the military authorities failed to give the go-ahead for procurement of 140 engines, which would have enabled the OM 302 to be produced in series. The brand-new six-cylinder diesel engine was suddenly mothballed. Hopes of increasing the load capacity of the company’s own 1.5-tonne vehicle and equipping it with the OM 302 as competition for the Opel Blitz were also dashed when

armaments minister Albert Speer decreed on 25 June 1942 that Borgward and Daimler-Benz should now build the Opel Blitz. The Opel Blitz, on the other hand, was equipped with a 3.6-litre petrol engine and operated with irregular cylinder intervals. In the turmoil of war, however, setting up new production facilities for the Opel Blitz was not easy and production in Mannheim did not get up and running until 1944. This coincided with the moment at which the main production plant for the three-tonne Blitz, the Opel plant in Brandenburg (Havel), was razed to the ground by US air force. It was still too early to switch production to Borgward in Bremen, so the Daimler-Benz Mannheim plant was the only possible production site for the urgently needed, standard threetonne vehicle.
Opel Blitz a godsend for Mannheim With considerable foresight, Kissel’s successor, Dr. Wilhelm Haspel, had always insisted that the Mannheim plant should continue to manufacture vehicles. So, work on the Opel Blitz came at just the right time, even if plant employees were not particularly happy about the ‘cuckoo’s egg’ that had been laid in their nest (model designation L 701). After the war, however, the only vehicle on which production could restart immediately was the Opel Blitz. A further advantage was that production facilities were paid for by the state – as if by miracle the production line had suffered relatively little damage as a result of aerial bombardment. Joy at this state of affairs was tempered only by the fact that the contract to produce the Blitz under licence could be terminated after two years. Daimler-Benz therefore faced an impasse. At a meeting on 24 July 1945, Wilhelm Haspel explained: “If our model is to be delivered in two years’ time, then strictly speaking it needs to be ready for production today’. He went on: ‘The issue of the three-tonne vehicle is the most serious we are facing, so we need to make it our specific concern.” When Opel did actually terminate the contract in mid 1947 it was a bitter blow. No one was sure what drawings or test engines had survived the war unscathed. Not only were the drawings found, however, the sole prototype of the L 312 with its new six-cylinder diesel engine also turned up safe and
sound. In contravention of an official order it had not been scrapped but had instead been converted to operate on wood gas and put to good use in-house. Adapting the OM 312 takes time and effort Suddenly prospects for finally adapting the OM 302 for use in a company three-tonne vehicle were a little brighter. And by adopting the same irregular cylinder intervals as the Opel petrol engine, the OM 302 became the new OM 312 design. This modification involved equipping the machinery that bored the holes for the spark plugs (in the petrol engine) with different tools to mill the holes for the glow plugs. In addition, the diesel engine, which by definition operated at higher pressures than the petrol engine, was fitted with seven main bearings instead of the four in the petrol engine. But since the diesel engines were relatively narrow on account of the length of the cylinder block having to extend to the same ceiling as the petrol version, they also had to cope with higher bearing loads and consequently higher oil temperatures. Because of this higher thermal load, an oil-water heat exchanger in the OM 312 was essential. At the same time, the cylinder heads were modified to allow the engine to achieve the desired increase in power rating from 80 hp in the OM 302 to 90 hp for the OM 312. What is more, the latter developed its 90 hp at just 2800/min. This also necessitated modifications to the precombustion chamber and inlet ducts that entered at a steep angle through the valve cap. Although the new OM 312 had the same 90-millimetre bore as the petrol engine, the stroke was increased from 95 to 120 millimetres. This yielded a displacement of 4.6 litres instead of 3.6 litres. Despite this, the engine weighed just 355 kilograms, making it the lightest unit in its class. It was intended to serve as the power unit in the newly designed three-tonne L 3250, which was fitted with reinforced rear axles and gearbox to accommodate the OM 312’s maximum torque of 28.2 mkg at 1600/min (equivalent to 277 Newton metres).
Start of production suddenly recedes into the distance The supply situation in 1947 for coal, electricity and gas was calamitous, however. The first test vehicle was assembled at the beginning of that year, but the start of production, originally scheduled for July 1948, now receded far into the distance. Opel extended the
contract until 1949, which suited the designers just fine, because it allowed them to subject both the L 3250 and the OM 312 to more thorough testing. For one thing was clear – the new design simply had to succeed. Wilhelm Haspel was very conscious of the risks involved, particularly with the OM 312. At the end of 1947, he warned: “The approach to this engine in terms of testing has not been as circumstances should have dictated.” The developers used the additional time to put the engine design on a solid footing.
Enthusiastic reception for the L 3250 When the engine was first unveiled to the public in May 1949 at the export fair in Hanover, it caused a sensation in the truck sector – a diesel unit with the same power per litre as a petrol engine. Moreover, in the shape of the L 3250 they were looking at a diesel truck with virtually the powerto-weight ratio of a petrol truck. Nevertheless, the OM 312 did have certain idiosyncrasies: since the right-hand side had an open design similar to the Opel engine and was sealed only with a cap, it lacked something in terms of rigidity. Cracks in the relatively weak connecting rods were not infrequent. In professional circles, the OM 312 was ecstatically received. In issue 9/1950 of the magazine Das Last-Auto, for example, vehicle tester Hans-Arnold König made the following comment: “What liveliness and power the engine has! This test driver has to admit that he was astonished at the incredible tractive power of this 4.6-litre engine.” The L 3250 brochure had similar praise for the engine qualities: “The newly designed six-cylinder diesel engine has a character such as was thought possible up to now only in high-speed passenger car petrol engines.” All of this also generated international interest, which fitted well with Wilhelm Haspel’s efforts to kick-start exports. His principal focus was on the South American and Indian markets. In March 1949, for example, he wrote to his trusted friend Moritz Straus in Zurich, who had owned the Horch plants before the creation of Auto Union: “In particular, we have to tackle the South American market … and see what can be done there.”

THE NEW A-CLASS SEDAN T
he family of compact cars from MercedesBenz continues to grow: The A-Class Sedan will be launched at the end of 2018. The fourdoor sedan car has a wheelbase of 2729 millimetres and the proportions of a dynamic and at the same time compact sedan car with short overhangs at the front and rear. It is at the top of its segment with regard to rear headroom. In addition, the sedan model has the familiar A-Class virtues. These include modern, efficient engines, the high level of safety thanks to state-of-the-art driving assistance systems with S-Class functions, and the intuitively operated and learning MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system. With a Cd value of 0.22 and a frontal area of 2.19 m², the new A-Class Sedan has the lowest aerodynamic drag of all production vehicles worldwide and thereby defends the world record of the CLA Coupé. The new A-Class Sedan will be built in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and Rastatt, Germany, and was developed in Sindelfingen, Germany. The new model will be presented to the general public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show (4 to 14 October 2018). Mercedes-Benz already presented the A-Class L Sedan at this year's Auto China in Beijing in April. This sedan model was developed exclusively as a long-wheelbase version for the Chinese market and is also produced there exclusively. "Following the successful start of the A-Class, things at Mercedes-Benz are happening in quick succession with regard to the new family of compacts. In response to the wish of many customers, we now offer the A-Class for the first time also as a sedan car", says Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales. "Anyone looking for a compact, sporty sedan with a separate boot now has a new attractive alternative. It will enable us to win new customers for MercedesBenz”. The new generation of compacts has made a key contribution to the rejuvenation and image change of the Mercedes-Benz brand. The launch of the fourdoor CLA Coupé CLA in the USA in 2013 was the first time a compact car from Mercedes-Benz was sold on the American market. In 2017, nearly one in two buyers of a compact car from Mercedes-Benz in the USA had previously driven a competitor vehicle, and
more than 50 percent of the CLA customers were new at Mercedes (first-time buyers and conquests). The A-Class established today's compact car segment of Mercedes-Benz in 1997 and since then more than six million compact car models have already been delivered worldwide. The A-Class Sedan as the seventh model further expands the range of compact cars from Mercedes-Benz. A logical addition, because with the C, E and S-Class, Mercedes-Benz has more premium sedan competence than most other manufacturers.
The key dimensions of the new A-Class Sedan: • • • • • • •
Length/width/height: 4549/1796/1446 mm Wheelbase: 2729 mm Boot capacity: 420 litres Headroom front/rear: 1024/944 mm Elbow room front/rear: 1457/1446 mm Shoulder room front/rear: 1400/1372 mm Effective legroom front/rear: 1062/861 mm The A-Class Sedan offers great utility. That includes above-average shoulder, elbow and headroom plus the easy access to the rear. It is at the top of its segment with regard to rear headroom (944 mm). The boot holds 420 litres and was designed for practical usability. The boot opening is very large with a width of 950 mm and a diagonal of 462 mm between lock and lower edge of the rear window. This allows comfortable loading and unloading of larger luggage items.
World record defended: none is more aerodynamic The new A-Class Sedan takes advantage of the favourable conditions provided by its long rear end to undercut even the already exemplary A-Class with hatchback (Cd value from 0.25). With a benchmark of Cd = 0.22 the new sedan model even equals the original world record of the CLA Coupé. Thanks to the frontal area of 2,19 m², smaller than that of the CLA, the new A-Class Sedan has the lowest aerodynamic drag of all production vehicles worldwide. The good aerodynamic properties are a crucial factor in the low fuel consumption in real-life conditions. A host of details
was optimised with numerous computation loops, CAE simulations (computer-aided engineering) and measurements in the wind tunnel in Sindelfingen. The measures also include an extensive sealing concept (with sealing of the headlamp surroundings et al.) as well as the nearly complete panelling of the underbody, which comprises the engine bay, the main floorpan, parts of the rear axle, the diffuser and other components. The front and rear wheel spoilers were optimised specifically to route the air around the wheels as efficiently as possible. The rims and tyres also underwent aerodynamic finetuning. Depending on the market, an optional two-part shutter system behind the radiator grille is available, which minimises the airflow through the engine bay.
Engines: start with one diesel and one petrol engine each The following engines are available at the start of the A-Class Sedan : • A 200 (120 kW/163 hp, 250 Nm); with 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission (combined fuel consumption 5.4-5.2 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 124-119 g/km) • A 180 d (85 kW/116 hp, 260 Nm); with 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission (combined fuel consumption 4.3-4.0 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 113-107 g/km).
Equipment & appointments: KEYLESS-GO with HANDS-FREE ACCESS available The entry-level model is already extensively equipped. Standard features include the MBUX – MercedesBenz User Experience infotainment system with touchscreen and driving assistance systems of the latest generation such as Active Brake Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. In addition, the A-Class Sedan can be customised with the design and equipment lines Style, Progressive and AMG Line, the Night Package as well as further optional equipment. The KEYLESS-GO Convenience Package with

HANDS-FREE ACCESS will be one of the available options, for example. The HANDS-FREE ACCESS convenience function enables hands-free and fully automatic opening of the boot lid with a kicking motion of the foot under the rear bumper. The A-Class Sedan will be available as an Edition 1 in the year of the market launch. This special model features a host of copper-coloured highlights in the exterior and interior.
Design: superior sportiness and modernity With its puristic design emphasising surfaces, the A-Class Sedan is hot and cool at the same time, and thereby is a seamless fit with the design idiom of Sensual Purity. This includes the clear formal shapes emphasising surface areas with reduced lines and precise gaps. The new A-Class Sedan has the proportions of a dynamic and compact sedan car with short front and rear overhangs. The greenhouse which sits far back and the compact rear end lend the vehicle a formal dynamic boost. Thanks to the 16 to 19-inch wheels and the pronounced wheel arches, the A-Class Sedan has a sporty stance on the road. The front end design looks very progressive. Contributing to this impression are the low, elongated bonnet, the slimline headlamps with chrome element, the torch-like daytime driving lights plus the single-louvre diamond radiator grille with chrome pins (optional), and the central star. The muscular and sensual vehicle shoulder with a precise character line running below it emphasises the perfectly contoured side volume. The side mirrors sit on the beltline. The two-part
tail lamps underscore the clear rear end that emphasises width. The rear reflectors were relocated to the modular two-part rear bumper. Depending on the selected equipment, this rear bumper is available with a black diffuser or with chrome trim strip and chrome tailpipe tips.
Interior design: revolution from within The interior of the new A-Class is completely redefined with its modern, avant-garde look. Mercedes-Benz has taken a completely new approach, revolutionising the compact class from the inside with a new feeling of spaciousness. The unique interior architecture is shaped in particular by the avant-garde design of the dashboard: The designers completely dispensed with a cowl above the cockpit. As a result, the wing-shaped main body of the dashboard extends from one front door to the other with no visual discontinuity. The Widescreen display (optional) is completely free-standing. The air vents in a sporty turbine look are another highlight. Below this main body is a low-lying section, the so-called wing. The wing appears to float, as there are no connections or shape transitions to the surrounding area. The ambient lighting enhances this effect, accentuating the free-floating impression of the substructure. The 64 colours of the optional ambient lighting make five times as many colours available than before. And it is not just the variety that has increased, as the emotive presentation also sets standards in this segment: the different colours are composed into ten colour worlds to allow an avant-garde lighting display with spectacular colour changes.
The fully free-standing cockpit is available in three versions: • with two 7-inch displays (17.78 cm), • with one 7-inch and one 10.25-inch (26 cm) display and with two 10.25-inch displays.
MBUX - Mercedes-Benz User Experience: unrivalled experience The new A-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz model to feature the completely new MBUX - MercedesBenz User Experience multimedia system, which also ushers in a new era for Mercedes me connectivity at the same time. As a result, it also comes standard in the A-Class Sedan. A unique feature of this system is its ability to learn thanks to artificial intelligence. MBUX is customisable and adapts to the user. It thus creates an emotional connection between vehicle, driver and passengers. Its further strengths include, depending on the specification, the high-resolution Widescreen Cockpit with touchscreen operation of the media display, the navigation display with augmented reality technology plus intelligent voice control with natural speech recognition, which is activated with the keyword "Hey Mercedes". A head-up display is also available. The touchscreen is part of the comprehensive MBUX touchcontrol concept – a triad consisting of the touchscreen, touchpad on the centre console (optional) and touch control buttons on the steering wheel. MBUX is a revolution of the user experience in the car. Emotively appealing showcasing features underline

the comprehensibility of the control structure and thrill through brilliant 3-D maximum-resolution graphics which are rendered, i.e. calculated and displayed, in real time. New and improved Mercedes me connect services are being launched with the new infotainment generation MBUX. These include the navigation functions based on Car-to-X Communication (information from vehicle to vehicle on events recorded by sensors, e.g. emergency braking, ESP® intervention, or a manual system message from the driver, e.g. about an accident) and Vehicle Tracking, which makes it easier to find the parked car, as well as a message if the parked car has been bumped or towed away. The Mercedes me app collection can be placed as an icon on the screen in a user-friendly way and can be freely sorted on the homepage like all other main applications. In addition, online content such as current filling station prices or the availability of parking spaces in the multi-storey car park are displayed in MBUX as an option. Online updating is a simple way of allowing new content to be made available in MBUX.

The new A-Class comes with expanded Active Brake Assist as standard. Depending on the situation, it can effectively help to mitigate the consequences of rear-end collisions with slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles ahead, and even with crossing pedestrians and cyclists, or prevent them altogether. Active Lane Keeping Assist (likewise standard) is able to warn the driver by means of pulsed vibrations in the steering wheel when the vehicle is unintentionally drifting out of its lane at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h. If the vehicle passes over a solid line, it can pull the vehicle back into lane by applying the brakes on one side. In the case of a dotted line, such intervention takes place only when there is a danger of collision with a vehicle in the adjacent lane (including danger from oncoming traffic). PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognise an imminent rear-end collision. If the danger of a collision persists, the system can also firmly apply the brakes of the stationary vehicle, thus minimising the risk of injuries by reducing the forward jolt caused by an impact from the rear.
Intelligent Drive: functions from the S-Class
Passive safety: highly stable passenger compartment and modern restraint systems
The A-Class has the very latest driving assistance systems with cooperative driver support, and thus provides the highest level of active safety in this segment with functions adopted from the S Class. For the first time, the A-Class is able to drive semiautonomously in certain situations. To do this, it keeps a close eye on the traffic situation: improved camera and radar systems allow it to see up to 500 metres ahead. The A-Class also uses map and navigation data for assistance functions. For example, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC as part of the Driving Assistance Package is able to provide route-based support to the driver in numerous situations, and to predictively and conveniently adjust the speed, e.g. when approaching bends, junctions or roundabouts. Also on board are e.g. Active Emergency Stop Assist and intuitively understandable Active Lane Change Assist.
The new A-Class is also the first Mercedes-Benz model to have been developed at the new Technology Centre for Vehicle Safety (TFS). The design of the vehicle structures incorporates findings from research into real accidents. Every single body shell component was developed according to the loads and stresses encountered, with respect to geometry, material thickness, joining technology and material quality (increased proportion of high-strength and ultra-highstrength sheet steel). The centrepiece of the body's safety concept is the highly rigid passenger compartment. Its great rigidity when subjected to accident-induced stress e.g. in frontal, lateral or rear-end collisions and rollovers is above all due to the greater use of high-strength, ultrahigh-strength and press-hardened sheet steel. Driver and front passenger each have a three-point
seat belt with belt force limiter and belt tensioner. In conjunction with the PRE-SAFE® system (optional equipment), the front seats are equipped with reversible belt reel tensioners. Both of the outer rear seats are fitted with a seat belt with reel tensioner and belt force limiter. The new A-Class is equipped with driver and front passenger airbags, a driver's knee airbag and window airbags as standard. Unlike in many competing models, the window airbag also covers the A-pillar for more complete passenger protection. Thorax-pelvis side airbags are likewise standard in the front, and available as optional equipment for the rear.
MULTIBEAM LED headlamps: optimum visibility in all conditions The optional MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are another example of the technology transfer from the luxury to the compact class. They allow extremely quick and precise, electronically controlled adjustment of the headlamps to suit the current traffic situation. Each headlamp features 18 individually actuated LEDs. The daylight-like light colour of the LEDs is easy on the eyes and has a positive effect on concentration. The road ahead is precisely and brightly illuminated. LED High Performance headlamps are a further option. As standard, the new A-Class is equipped with halogen headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lamps.
Suspension: agile and comfortable There is a choice of suspension systems for the A-Class, depending on engine variant and driver preference. The line-up of wheels ranges from 16 to 19 inches. The front axle of the new A Class features a McPherson design. The more powerful versions and models with 4MATIC, adaptive damping or larger wheels are fitted with a complex four-link rear axle. The other models have a weight-optimised torsionbeam rear axle.

26 » Cole's 124
C
ole’s ‘Old Girl’ seems like quite a sedate choice when you realise that his first Mercedes was a “Yellow, 24 ton, 6 wheel Recovery Truck”.The former commercial recovery driver and ex-Mercedes mechanic Cole now works at MBS of Southampton, a prominent independent Mercedes specialist on the south coast. His love of everything to do with cars started at the age of 10 when he was taught to look after them by his Dad, later teaching him to drive around car parks at the age of 12. “Dad wasn’t quite as passionate as me about cars, but he certainly enjoyed them”. Cole started working for Mercedes after leaving the world of commercial recovery and started as a breakdown technician, he soon brought a C320 that was later traded in for a C220 CDI. “Working with the brand, it seemed like the right thing to do, but I guess it did make me feel good, like I was something a bit special”. The Old Girl came into Cole’s life when Mr H turned up in it at MBS in 2015 “I remember saying, he’s brought a decent looking car there”. 124’s are well known to him as he’d stripped down and repaired hundreds of them in his time, but this one felt different. “I’d never really looked at the coupe version of them before, just loved the shape of this one, the colour, everything. It was in the garage for a couple of weeks, getting some extensive work done and I just got more and more impressed with it”.
mercedesclub.org.uk
Fast forward a year and Mr H phoned, asking for the 124 to be collected and MOT’d. “I couldn’t believe it when I got it in the garage, it had done two miles in the last year and that was the two miles from his house to MBS”. “By this time, it was in a right old
state, the battery was flat and it had just been sat outside”. Cole remembers taking the car back to Mr H (who was by this time housebound due to illness and age) and telling him “You somehow need to put this car to use, it’s not doing it any good sitting here”. Another year passed and Cole was back to Mr H’s to find the car in exactly the same place that he’d left it the year before. “It was even worse than last year, it had been attacked by seagulls, and it was covered in pine needles, everything that’s really bad for a car”. Again the battery was flat and again the milometer hadn’t moved. “I knew that morning I wanted the car. I told Mr H that I needed to take it off his hands before it got completely wrecked, but he was still sure that he’d regain his health and start driving again”. Resigned to never owning the 124, Cole brought a 190E in the exact same colour, “I’d just decided that I wanted a classic car, something felt good about them”. Two weeks later, out of the blue, he got a phone call from Mr H inviting him to “pop round - we

need to have chat”. Cole remembers feeling shocked but excited “until he started talking prices, that is…..!” A bit of haggling later and he was taking his new, old girl home. That first drive was nothing but relief, “I never thought I’d get it and I didn’t really believe it would happen till I was driving away”. A thorough clean revealed the full extent of the neglect of the car, “it was full of bits of trees, twigs, there was moss growing out of the lights and around the windows”. As Cole had spent so much time with the car already, inspected it and seen the engine re-build, he knew that it was a rare find. It remains one of the only rust-free examples that he’s ever seen. The hard work then really began, and Cole started a thread on the Forum to document and photograph the months of work that followed “everything’s been done, and everything’s been done to the highest level”. The level of dedication that’s gone into the re-build is clear when you see that even the underside has been painstakingly painted in the pursuit of perfection. (The full build can be read on the
Forum on Coles 124 3.0 Coupe thread on the MBO Forum) Something about this story has felt “meant to be”. Cleaning out the car revealed a crumpled old ticket from a car show years previously that he remembered attending. This was confirmed with a trawl through old photos: and sure enough, there’s a very young looking old girl, with Cole standing in the background! Cole’s next plan is to have the body work done, “not that it really needs it, but she’s 28 years old and that’s a lot of exposure to the elements”. With the majority of (this stage) of the restorations finished, the car has really started to see the world – she’s gone from 134,000 miles to 141,500 in the last year. After her years sat clocking up four miles a year, she’s now been to Belgium, Maastricht and Normandy on Forum GTGs. Confidence in her has been increased by the replacement of the front lower wish bones, as “I had them go on an old 190, ending up with the wheels at a 90 degree angle and I didn’t want that to happen 300 miles from home”.
The thing that Cole most loves is the superb drive and the attention that she gets wherever she goes. “Kids point at it, blokes give me a thumbs up on the motorway and the best thing ever was being pulled over at Border Control by an incredibly grumpy French official. I thought that something was wrong as he inspected it bonnet to boot – then he just started nodding in appreciation and slowly waved us through. He’d only pulled us over to get a better look at it! That’s just the reaction she gets”. Cole would like to highlight the fantastic work by Trestens Finishers in Hazel Road, Woolston for all the great powder coating they have done on the car, Cole and Liz are looking forward to more adventures with the Forum GTG boys!

MERCEDES-AMG
MOTORSPORT THE 2018 SEASON SO FAR
TALES FROM THE PADDOCK Hungarian GP – Stat-Attack: The Hungaroring has not been a particular favourite of the team in recent years, but on the final race weekend before the summer break, they rose to the challenge and secured the eleventh pole position (new record for an engine manufacturer on this track) and the eleventh victory (more than any other engine manufacturer) in Hungary for the brand with the threepointed star. Lewis also further polished his crown as ‘King of Budapest’. His 77th Formula 1 pole position was also his sixth at the Hungaroring, a record that is surpassed only by Michael Schumacher who has seven poles to his credit in Hungary. Lewis and Sebastian Vettel are now on level pegging in terms of pole positions this season with five each. Lewis’s 67th Grand Prix victory on Sunday puts him well in the clear in two categories – most wins in Hungary (six) and most wins this season (five). All of this was accomplished on the track where he clinched his first Grand Prix victory with the team in 2013. Strong at Spa: In the 70th running of the Total 24 Hours of Spa, the teams fielding Mercedes-AMG GT3s produced a strong overall performance. A record contingent of 13 vehicles built at Affalterbach competed in the legendary endurance classic last weekend, and four of them finished in the Top 12. The best result was secured by the number 4 car entered by Mercedes-AMG Team BLACK FALCON and driven by Yelmer Buurman (NED), Maro Engel (GER) and Luca Stolz (GER). The GT3 looked to be on course for a podium until four hours before the end of the race. However, an unfortunately timed pit stop shortly before a full-course yellow dropped the
driver trio behind the Top Three. Taking the chequered flag in sixth place was the number 88 car entered by Mercedes-AMG Team AKKA ASP and driven by Daniel Juncadella (ESP), Raffaele Marciello (ITA) and Tristan Vautier (FRA). Eleventh place went to the number 43 car of Mercedes-AMG team STRAKKA Racing with Maximilian Buhk (GER), Maximilian Götz (GER) and Alvaro Parente (POR) sharing the cockpit, closely followed by the number 84 Mercedes-AMG Team MANN-FILTER car of Edoardo Mortara (ITA), Gary Paffett (GBR) and Renger van der Zande (NED) in twelfth place. Outside the general classification, the Customer Racing teams achieved three podium finishes: the number 42 of STRAKKA Racing led the Pro-AM class for much of the time, but the quartet of Chris Buncombe (GBR), David Fumanelli (ITA), Nick Leventis (GBR) and Lewis Williamson (GBR) ultimately
had to settle for the runner-up spot. Third place on the Pro-AM podium went to the number 175 of SunEnergy1 Team HTP Motorsport driven by Kenny Habul (AUS), Thomas Jäger (GER), Martin Konrad (AUT) and Bernd Schneider (GER). In the Silver Cup, the number 6 BLACK FALCON Mercedes-AMG GT3 driven by Abdulaziz Al Faisal (KSA), Hubert Haupt (GER), Manuel Metzger (GER) and Gabriele Piana (ITA) made a valiant charge through the field from last on the grid to secure P2 in their class. These creditable results have allowed Mercedes-AMG to close the gap in the Intercontinental GT Challenge manufacturers’ championship at this halfway point in the season. They are now in P2. The Endurance Cup of the Blancpain GT Series is led by four Mercedes-AMG drivers – Raffaele Marciello, Maro Engel, Luca Stolz and Yelmer Buurman.

Mercedes-AMG top manufacturer at Spa: The consistent performance across the board by the ten Mercedes-AMG cars that actually finished the race – seven of them in the Top 20 – and the solid results in the various classes ensured that MercedesAMG lifted the prestigious Coupe du Roi for the most successful manufacturer in the 24-hour race at SpaFrancorchamps. Jubilation at the Hockenheimring: Success for the Mercedes-AMG GT3 was not confined to Spa. In the two 30-minute sprint races of the STT Spezial Tourenwagen Trophy (Special Touring Car Trophy) at the Hockenheimring, Mario Hirsch (#20, Race Art.eu) made two podium appearances, one for a P2 and the other for a P3. Marvin Dienst (#16, Schütz Motorsport) won the Dunlop 60 in the DMV GTC. Kenneth Heyer in the number 14 Mercedes-AMG GT3 entered by équipe vitesse finished second in Saturday’s race on the illustrious circuit in Baden.
THREE QUESTIONS FOR TOTO WOLFF Toto, Formula 1 is now about to start its summer break. After twelve races, how would you sum up the season so far? Toto Wolff: The battle at the top is more exciting than ever before, and things are also very tight in the midfield. The races have not only produced some great wheel-to-wheel action on the track but also some surprise winners: seven of the twelve races so far were not necessarily won by the fastest car. All in all, I would say that the 2018 season has been a marvellous advertisement for the sport. For us as a team, the half-term report is a positive one, as we are currently leading both world championships. We owe this to the efforts of our team in Brackley and Brixworth and to the driving skills of Lewis and Valtteri. At the same time, though, we also realise that we have dropped points in more than one race, so we are going flat out to boost performance even more for the second half of the season. We will be
working very hard on that right up to the weekend when the summer break officially begins as decreed by the regulations. It’s a break that everyone on our team has more than earned. We will then come back refreshed with the necessary energy to raise our game even further in the second half of the season.
And how are things looking in the DTM? Toto Wolff: In the DTM, we currently lead all three championships – an excellent achievement by the team in Affalterbach! Before the season began, we promised the fans that our final season in the DTM would be as successful as we could make it, and in that regard, we have kept our word. The performance of the car is very encouraging, and the same goes for our drivers. Each of them has had some memorable moments, and several of them are in contention for the title. But we also know that you have to go one step at a time in racing. In such a highly competitive series as the DTM, every last detail counts – and a single mistake can be costly. That’s why we’re keeping our feet on the ground and facing each race weekend as a new challenge. Next week, we go to Brands Hatch where the team will compete on the Grand Prix Circuit. I’m sure it will be a real experience for any racer to be driving on that particular track – one that rewards not only the best technical package but also driving skills and courage. We still have five race weekends left in our final DTM season, and we intend to make every one of them a memorable occasion.
Towards the end of 2019, Mercedes will be entering Formula E for the first time, and the name of the team has recently been decided: Mercedes EQ Formula E Team. What else have you to tell us on that front? Toto Wolff: Our involvement in Formula E is taking on ever more concrete forms. In addition to the name and the announcement of SAP as our first partner, we have also made some decisions on how best to integrate the team into our current motorsport activities so that we can draw on our existing expertise. For example, we will develop the powertrain at HPP in Brixworth where our Formula 1 engines are already being built. This will allow us to make use of the expertise that we have already acquired there in the design of Formula 1 hybrid engines. Brackley, where our chassis for Formula 1 is built, will also be helping to develop the Formula E team. The racing side will be managed by HWA AG who are already doing an excellent job for us in the DTM. The team based in Affalterbach will be contesting Formula E with effect from the coming season, initially as a Venturi customer team, so as to familiarise themselves with the series. The more concrete our plans become for our involvement in Formula E, the more we relish the prospect of this new challenge.

Brabus enhances the G-Class Âť 31

ENHANCES THE NEW MERCEDES G-CLASS
W
ith the BRABUS B40 - 500 PowerXtra performance upgrade, the new G 500 produces an output of 368 kW / 500 hp (493 bhp) and 710 Nm (524 lb-ft) of torque. As a result, the off-roader accelerates from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.7 seconds. Tailormade BRABUS Monoblock wheels including PLATINUM EDITION hi-tech forged wheels with a diameter of 23 inches complement the striking style of the BRABUS bodywork components, lend the new G-Class an even more extravagant appearance. The interior likewise leaves nothing to be desired: The company upholstery shop creates exclusive BRABUS fine leather interiors from the finest Mastik leather and Alcantara, which offers endless possibilities in terms of colour variety and design variants. BRABUS offers the most extensive line-up of performance upgrades and increased-displacement engines for Mercedes-Benz automobiles in the world. It goes without saying that concurrent with new G-Class going on sale, BRABUS already has an initial performance upgrade ready for the four-litre eight-cylinder twin-turbo engine of the G 500, which outputs 310 kW / 422 hp (416 bhp) ex-factory. For this engine, the powerplant engineers of the Bottrop-based refinement specialist developed the new BRABUS B40 - 500 PowerXtra performance kit. At the heart of the modification is a plugand-play control module that is adapted to the electronic engine control unit of the vehicle. Extensive test cycles on state-of-the-art test benches, on the road as well as on terrain were
used to recalibrate the electronic boost pressure control and program optimized mapping for injection and ignition. With an increase in power by 58 kW / 78 hp (78 bhp) and a boost in torque by 100 Nm (74 lb-ft), the off-roader adds further dynamic spirit. The new peak output of 368 kW / 500 hp (493 bhp) at 5,600 rpm and the high peak torque of 710 Nm (524 lb-ft), on tap constantly between 2,250 and 4,250 rpm, harmonize perfectly with the nine-speed automatic transmission of the new G 500. If desired, the gears can also be changed manually using the ergonomically shaped aluminium BRABUS paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
Like all other BRABUS components, this new performance upgrade comes with the three-year or 100,000-km/62,000-mile BRABUS Tuning Warranty. BRABUS exclusively uses hi-tech lubricants from technology partner MOTUL for this off-roader as well. The BRABUS stainless sport exhaust system with active controlled flaps and two chrome tailpipes exiting on each vehicle side was designed specifically for the new Mercedes G 500.
32 Âť Brabus enhances the G-Class
It offers not only an optimal mix of sound, performance and longevity, but also active control of the exhaust note featuring a discreet; Coming Home mode and a Sport position with particularly powerful V8 engine sounds. Of course, the BRABUS designers also lend the current evolution of the G-Class even more fascinating looks. The BRABUS front fascia attachment gives the production bumper a more striking profile. What is more: The LED side markers integrated on the left and right optimize active safety, as does the sophisticated shape of the bodywork component manufactured from PUR plastic in OEM quality. Its integral spoiler reduces front-axle lift at high speeds with positive effects on the handling stability. The striking facelift also includes the tailor-made radiator grille, which in addition to the dominant BRABUS double-B at the centre also features a BRABUS logotype. When the driver approaches the SUV or someone pulls on the door handle, it lights up in blue, as do the round BRABUS signets on both ends of the front fascia attachment. The BRABUS lighting concept for the new
mercedesclub.org.uk
G-Class also features auxiliary headlamps above the windshield. This naked-carbon module on the roof, which like all components made from this composite material is available with a high-gloss or matte surface finish, is fitted with two powerful lights. When activating the flashers or using the high beams, two sets of twelve high-performance LEDs each optimize the illumination of the roadway. The striking BRABUS front appearance is rounded off with the hood scoop likewise made from carbon fibres, which not only lends the G-Class an even more characteristic profile, but also optimizes the exchange of cool and hot air in the engine bay. The new BRABUS rear air foil lends the offroader an even more distinctive appearance from the rear as well. The exclusive BRABUS looks are of course also coined significantly by the BRABUS Monoblock wheels, which were designed specifically for the new G-Class. Customers can choose from various designs and sizes from 20 to 23 inches in diameter. The most exclusive option features BRABUS PLATINUM EDITION forged wheels of
size 11Jx23. Thanks to being produced using stateof-the-art forging technology, they offer a perfect mix of lightweight construction and tremendous strength. The high-performance tires of size 305/35 R 23 come from the BRABUS technology partners Continental, Pirelli or YOKOHAMA. In keeping with best tradition, BRABUS naturally also offers a wide range of exclusive interior options for the new G-Class. The product line-up starts with exclusive accessories such as aluminium pedals and scuff plates with backlit BRABUS logo for the passenger cabin and the trunk. In addition, the company upholstery shop creates exquisite BRABUS fine leather interiors from especially soft and breathable Mastik leather and Alcantara, which are tailored to customer preferences in every detail with regard to colour and design. The product range is rounded off by precious-wood components and carbon-fibre elements in a huge variety of variants. Turning a Mercedes into a movie theatre or office on wheels is yet another BRABUS specialty that is also being realized in the new Mercedes G-Class. For more information visit www.brabus.com

34 » RED suite launch with Sir Terence Conran
mercedesclub.org.uk
Sir Terence Conran at the launch of the new Andaz RED suite at Andaz Liverpool street.
S
ir Terence Conran is one of the world's bestknown designers, retailers and restaurateurs. Born in 1931 he founded the Conran Design Studio in 1956 and in 1964 opened the first of the Habitat chain of home furnishing stores that revolutionised design on the British high street in the 60s and 70s. Later he established The Conran Shop and opened stores in London, Paris, New York and across Japan. In the nineties he founded the Conran Restaurants group that opened iconic restaurants, hotels and bars in London, Paris, New York, Japan and Scandinavia including Quaglino's, Bluebird, Mezzo, Guastavino's and Le Pont de la Tour. In 1989 he founded the Design Museum in London, the world's first museum dedicated to design which moved to larger premises in the former Commonwealth Building, Kensington, in 2016. Throughout his career Terence's companies have designed, owned and operated shops, restaurants, hotels, bars and cafés around the world as well as working across the fields of architecture, interiors, products and graphics. This diverse range of projects have all been driven by Terence's fundamental belief that intelligent design improves the quality of people's lives. Today Terence designs furniture for Benchmark, Content by Terence Conran and The Conran Shop, and
remains involved in the restaurant industry through The Boundary and Bibendum. He has written over 50 informative books that broadly reflect his design philosophy and is an honorary professor of the University of the Creative Arts. In 1983 Terence was knighted for his services to design in 1983 and in 2018 he was made a Companion of Honour by The Queen, one of the highest distinctions available. Created by Sir Founded by Sir Terence Conran, the London based Conran and Partners, work across architecture and interior over thirty years ago. The practice works across all sectors specializing in residential and hospitality design. Conran and Partners redesigned the 267 guest rooms at Andaz London Liverpool Street which opened in 2017 in the first major overhaul of the rooms since unveiling their original design for the hotel twenty years ago when Andaz was known as the ‘Great Eastern Hotel’. Conran and Partners have designed the interiors for some of the world’s most prestigious destination restaurants, such as London’s Royal Exchange, Skylon and Bluebird. Andaz London sits discreetly next to Liverpool Street station, as a stunning 21st century masterpiece housed in a Victorian building dating back to 1884. Traditional marble stair cases and grandeur design cascade through
the hotel alongside the most contemporary features which blends seamlessly throughout the hotel. Andaz London is full of interesting rooms, and delightful areas to eat and drink and soak up that Andaz atmosphere. With stunning rooms and a selection of superb suites, 6 restaurants & bars and 15 private dining & event spaces, they have everything covered. “Bringing in the local neighbourhood and culture to the guest experience through design and experiences is what the Andaz brand is all about,” said Heather Geisler, vice president, global brands and field marketing for Hyatt. “Launching the (ANDAZ)RED Suite in London not only celebrates our continued collaboration with (RED) but also gives us an opportunity to bring to life the city’s rich art history and storied culture through Sir Terence Conran’s inspired design.” “We’re thrilled to offer the (ANDAZ)RED Suite—one we see as an experience all its own,” said Andaz London Liverpool Street General Manager, Otto Steenbeek. “It’s been an honour working with Sir Terence Conran to create this expertly curated space reflecting the spirit of East London, while giving our guests an opportunity to benefit the lives of others through their travels.” The Andaz brand launched 11 years ago with Andaz

London Liverpool Street. Leveraging the hotel’s largest suite, the design includes custom-made cabinets, bedside and dressing tables, Eames and Karusselli lounge chairs (Sir Terence’s favourite seats). This chair creation was formed from quite an unusual source explained Sir Terence. “The designer of these chairs had drunk a few liquid lunches in Sweden and slowly staggered back to his studio. However, he tumbled and ended up sitting in a snow bank. There he sat for a while and pondered how comfortable he was. Sometime later he got up and made his way back the office and ordered his juniors to go out and message his mould in the snow bank. The rest as they say is history”. “The Great Eastern Hotel, as this hotel was once known, was my first big hotel project, so it has been a dream for me to be involved with the building once again,” said Sir Terence Conran. “I am proud to have collaborated with the Andaz brand and (RED) on a suite design that will give guests a great deal of pleasure while doing a great deal of good in the world. Through carefully curated and commissioned artwork and photography by local artists, we injected the vibrant and creative vibe of East London into the suite and mixed in contemporary hotel design with a domestic feel.” The room layout was adjusted to create a living and dining area as well as a separate bedroom, while introducing finishes and furniture to distinctly set it apart from both other hotel experiences in the area and the recently redesigned Andaz rooms. The suite’s bathroom

includes black Dornbracht brassware and basins by Laufen. It also houses a double vanity unit in marble, a freestanding Laufen bath and heated floors. The room design also references (RED) with one of the Karuselli chairs upholstered in red leather, a bright magenta sofa, and red glass bedside lamps. “After the success of our first (ANDAZ)RED Suite designed by Jonathan Adler at Andaz West Hollywood, we were excited to bring this experience to international travellers and show them that staying at a hotel can now be both personally rewarding and a powerful force in changing people’s lives,” said Deb Dugan, (RED)’s CEO. “Collaborating with the Andaz brand once again felt like a natural next step in our approach of engaging and giving back to local communities worldwide.” The suite will also feature portraits by British portrait and fashion photographer Rankin. Each portrait tells the story of how (RED) funds were put to work on the ground, showcasing mothers and children in Africa who have thrived because of the (RED) funds from partners like the Andaz brand. A special cabinet designed by Sir Terence contains a selection of (RED) products available for purchase ranging from $19-$315 (£14-£300). With each purchase, guests will provide an additional donation to (RED). For more information about Andaz London Liverpool Street and its (ANDAZ)RED Suite, please visit: Hyatt.com/AndazRED or see pg 42 for the hotel and suite review.

42 » The Andaz London
T
he Andaz London Liverpool Street situated next to Liverpool Street Station, is a classy property with a prime location in east London with beautiful modern facilities with equally as impressive original classic style. Due to its location, it is a perfect hotel for the business traveller. However, it also makes for a good weekend away to discover some hidden gens in East London which can be a real eye opener. With the building dating back to 1884, the former Great Eastern Hotel, is oozing with history that was hidden from only those in certain circles. The hotel still has a perfect Freemason masonic temple and is listed on the National Heritage List. This temple now houses grand events, music video, Film and TV shoots, with the regular Yoga classes. Following the purchase of the hotel by Sir Terrence Conran, the famed designer. He transformed what he described as “a derelict building” into a modern and fully functioning hotel. Hyatt took over in the mid-2000s and completed an extensive renovation on the interior. Location is a key part to many stays in the city, which its ideal location neatly around the corner from Liverpool Street station, makes it easy to find and within walking distance to hip pubs or chic cafes and cloths shops. Instead of a traditional check in desk, the hotel provides an open-check-in, with customers being served by check-in staff around a bank of computers. I was promptly helped and checked in and was handed the key to our stay in the (ANDAZ) RED Suite (As explained in more detail on pg 34-35) The (ANDAZ)RED Suite, provides (RED), a non-profit organisation that partners with world brands to raise money to fight HIV / AIDS in Africa through the global fund. The suite was designed by Sir Terence Conran himself which seemed a perfect match with Sir Terence’s connection to the hotel. In addition, his passion to help his friend Bono with this charity (frontman from U2). As you enter the suite you are channelled along a wide corridor which runs from the front door to the lounge / dining area at the rear of the suite. Straight away you can see this room has been designed as a clean cut
mercedesclub.org.uk
modern piece of art and has been sculpted to fit this hotel, location and RED by Sir Terence. Along the corridor, DAIS Contemporary provided a collection of commissioned artwork for the suite which includes images of local places, people and buildings provides you with a real insight into the area but adds a light-heartedness to the room. With wonderful lighting the rooms begin with the bedroom. Boasting one of the most comfortable beds I have every slept in with subtle lighting and wonderful pieces of furniture such as the large disk shaped lamp which might have been used as a replacement bat light in another certain Metropolis. Hidden touches like the hidden large flat screen TV allowed those seeking a rest from the goings on in TV land, far easier. The next room along the corridor opened to reveal a cosy dressing table and mirror with an expansive wardrobe to the rear. Next to this dressing area through the porthole door revealed the large bathroom with his and hers sinks a superb bath and a separate shower area. The style was clinically white and modern but still very much welcoming with its various bath treats on tap from REN who make organic skincare products in east London. The lounge and dining area to the rear of the suite is a large open plan space for you to relax. Again boasting a large interactive TV the seating area on bright red sofas made up the lounge area with chess board and an hour glass that I suspect might a 24hr glass, judging by its size. Within the lounge you can view some of the fantastic work (RED) do which is on display. Behind the sofa resides the large oval dining table and beautiful interlinked halo lights that shine brightly over the table. Behind the table a wonderful piece of cupboard furniture shows some of the (RED) branded items available for purchase and the free minibar. While it didn’t include alcohol, the fridge was stocked with apple juice, orange juice, sparkling water, still water, Coke and Diet Coke. In addition to tea and coffee, there was a bag of posh potato chips and orange chocolate-chip cookies in a drawer, above which was an espresso machine. The windows in the room had drapes and powered roller blinds which looked out to the side
of the building. After just 15 minutes in the room we received a call from reception welcoming us to the hotel and checking our dinner reservation was still ok. There is something to suit all dining tastes at Andaz London Liverpool Street . Enjoying your full English breakfast in 1901, sample international wines or enjoy an afternoon tea at the 1901 Wine Lounge. Escape the bustle of the city in Rake's Café Bar. Enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine in Miyako, a brasserie menu with healthy options in Eastway, or a traditional British pub experience in Lady Abercorn's Pub & Kitchen. We decided to go to Rake’s and enjoyed the superb hospitality and excellent food with a fantastic array of cocktails and drinks. For breakfast in the 1901, the former ballroom of the Great Eastern Hotel, which the grand domed fully stained glass ceiling survived both world wars thanks to multiple layers of mattresses laid on top. Only one piece was broken which is represented in red as a mark of respect of those who passed. The breakfast was full of variety, with a hot section of the buffet included the classics like bacon and eggs, with delicious renditions of shakshuka and kedgeree. The cold section included fruits, meats, cheeses, juices, yogurt and muesli. In addition to the buffet the menu included other delights including pancakes. There were also a wide assortment of fresh bread and pastries, made-to-order eggs, tea and coffee. The facilities and location of the Andaz in London are perfect, its proximity to the station and underground makes it an ideal base for a city adventure. (ANDAZ)RED Suite is stunning, and after a quick tour of the other rooms in the hotel, it is fair to say that they are beautifully styled and furnished as well. The hotel has an interesting mix of both modern and historic architecture and décor. The contrast between the modern atrium as you gaze up to the ceiling revealing all the levels of the hotel is very impressive. As equal to the historical grand marble pillars and staircase that cascades down to Rake’s. In conclusion the Andaz London provides, a perfect blend of modern and classic style, fantastic service and a great place to dine. The (ANDAZ)RED Suite starts from £619 per night, with 30 per cent of each booking going to the Global Fund in support of (RED)’s fight to end AIDS. londonliverpoolstreet. andaz.hyatt.com.
