Mercedes-Benz Cars UK Managing Director named 'Outstanding Automotive Leader' for the second time Mercedes-Benz Cars UK Managing Director Gary Savage has been named as one of the UK’s Outstanding Automotive Leaders at the Autocar Awards – the first time this title has been awarded to the same person twice.

Autocar’s editor, Mark Tisshaw, presented the award at a ceremony at Silverstone on 15 May. He commented: “Mercedes has gone from strength to strength under Gary's leadership, making it the leader in the premium segment and with another year of record sales in 2017.”

On receiving the award, Gary Savage said: “To win this award for a second time is a real testament to the hard work and dedication of our team at Mercedes-Benz Cars UK and across all our retail partners – without them, our position as the UK’s number one premium manufacturer last year would not have been possible. Our retailers are on the frontline so the part they play in the success of Mercedes-Benz is huge.”

In 2017, Mercedes-Benz Cars UK achieved its eighth consecutive record year with total sales of over 179,000 and a seven per cent market share.

The brand finished the year as the number one premium brand in the UK and the fourth biggest car brand overall.

Mercedes Me for older cars Owners of older Mercedes-Benz models can now access a range of digital services through the Mercedes me Adapter app, on either a smartphone app or online, thanks to the Mercedes me Adapter.

For a limited time, both the adapter – and the cost of fitting it – are completely free. The adapter can be fitted to selected models dating as far back as 2002, including the W169 A-Class and W211 E-Class. Once the adapter has been fitted, vehicle information can be accessed through the Mercedes me Adapter app on a smartphone, or by logging onto the Mercedes me portal on a computer. Information includes fuel level and range; mileage; battery voltage; parking time; and when the next service is due. The app will also automatically save the car’s parking position, making it easier to find later.

The service connects our customers with their car, allowing them access to their most important vehicle information at the press of a button.”

The adapter takes five minutes to fit, and can be activated once the customer has created a Mercedes me account and the car has been linked to the account by a Mercedes-Benz Retailer.

Mercedes AMG E 53 DTM Budapest Mercedes-AMG Motorsport conquer the Hungaroring. After having had a tough time racing in the DTM in recent years, Paul Di Resta (Mercedes-AMG Motorsport REMUS) and Lucas Auer (SILBERPFEIL Energy Mercedes-AMG Motorsport) achieved a one-two victory at the circuit near the Hungarian capital. For Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, this was their 185th victory in the DTM and fourth at the Hungaroring. Their first two successes were achieved by Johnny Cecotto as the DTM held its first meeting at the Hungarian track back in 1988.

Mercedes-AMG is supporting the sales release of the new members of the family Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ Coupé, Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ Cabriolet and Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4MATIC with a social media campaign. Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG "Thirty-Five� meets 300 SEL 6.8 AMG Spectacular and clad in an authentic racing car outfit - two very special S-Class saloon models from the AMG stable. ercedes-AMG was born on the racetrack more than 50 years ago – for the first time anywhere in the world, a racetrack now bears the successful brand name: The AMG Speedway in South Korea, an important Mercedes-AMG market, marks the beginning of a new era of the AMG community. The track not only adopted the name, but also sports the hallmark corporate design of AMG. The 4.3-kilometre circuit, some 38 kilometres from Gangnam, the trendy district of the capital Seoul, allows experiencing the brand's Driving Performance as intensively and exclusively as nowhere else in the region.

The AMG Lounge provides an inviting setting for community discussions and personal exchanges with AMG experts. In addition, the sports car

and performance brand will also use the AMG Speedway for the presentation of new models, dealer training, and other event formats.

The performance, the precision and the driving dynamics of an AMG model are best and most safely experienced on a racetrack. "The AMG Speedway is the world's first racetrack bearing our name. This underlines the importance of South Korea as one of our main markets. The AMG Speedway is thus not only an important step in the further dynamic development of AMG in South Korea. range, Mercedes-AMG in South Korea recorded a significant double-digit growth and a new sales record in 2017. The circuit and its surroundings are not only being branded with high-profile AMG logos, but are also enhanced with a host of exclusive AMG locations in the corporate design such as the AMG Lounge the separate pit lane and paddock area. The AMG Speedway is based on the South Korea’s first permanent racetrack, which was inaugurated in 1995. The circuit was extensively reconfigured and expanded in 2011 using the plans of renowned racetrack designer Hermann Tilke. The circuit is now 4.3-kilometres long and winds its way through 17 turns and over a bridge on the grounds of the Everland Resort theme park on the outskirts of the capital Seoul.

INVESTMENT OF AROUND 500 MILLION EUROS MERCEDES-BENZ TO PRODUCE ELECTRIC COMPACT CAR AT HAMBACH PLANT IN FRANCE

M

ercedes-Benz Cars is expanding its capacities for electric cars in Europe. The Hambach plant in France will produce a compact electric car of the new product and technology brand EQ. “20 years ago we started an exemplary German-Franco project with the production of the smart in Hambach. Now we take the next step and for the first time in our more than 100-year old history we bring the production of Mercedes-Benz to France. With the compact EQ model from Hambach we continue our electric initiative,” says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars after a meeting with the French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

Mercedes-Benz Cars plans to launch more than ten electric cars by 2022: throughout all segments, from smart to large SUVs. The company assumes that unit sales of electric models will represent a share of somewhere between 15 and 25 percent of total Mercedes-Benz sales by 2025. From 2020, the brand smart will only offer electric vehicles.

Thereby, smart will be the first automotive brand of the world, which completely changes from combustion engines to electric drives.

“The Hambach site in France features many years of experience in building fully electric cars.

We want to take advantage of the enormous expertise and prepare the plant for the production of an electric Mercedes-Benz. We are investing a total of around 500 million euros in the Hambach plant and in the product. It is now paying off for our employees that they already contributed to a significant improvement in the competitiveness of the Hambach site two years ago with the 'Pacte 2020'”, says Dr. Annette Winkler, Head of smart.

The ‘Pacte 2020’, which was adjusted with the workforce in 2016, includes an increase in working

hours from 35 to 39 hours and a salary adjustment.

Mercedes-Benz Cars has a longstanding competence centre for the production of electric vehicles: Already in 2007 smart launched a batterypowered vehicle as a pioneer in e-mobility and has been producing electric smarts in series since 2012.

Two electric vehicles, the smart EQ fortwo coupé and the smart EQ fortwo cabrio, are currently being produced there. In Germany the smart brand is the market leader among all-electric vehicles in the first quarter of 2018. The smart plant in Hambach already obtains all its electrical energy from renewable energy sources and is therefore CO2-neutral.

“With the production of a compact electric car, we are adding further capacities for our electric initiative at six locations on three continents. The smart plant in Hambach will become a part of our global compact car production network with the lead plant Rastatt, Germany”, says Markus Schäfer, Member of the Divisional Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Production and Supply Chain. The production network of the new generation of compact cars includes the plant in Kecskemét, Hungary, the BBAC production site in Beijing, the COMPAS plant in Aguascalientes (Mexico) as well as the Finnish manufacturing service provider Valmet Automotive.

The preparations for the new model in will start shortly. The investment of around 500 million euros will be spend for the construction of new facilities and also flow in the product itself: With state-of-the-art technology a new body shop and surface treatment will be build. The plant will also expand the assembly facilities and reshape the site's infrastructure.

Electric Offensive at Mercedes-Benz Cars In 2017, Mercedes-Benz Cars took crucial strategic decisions for the electric mobility: • Currently, electric hubs for the production of electric vehicles and batteries are being built around the globe.

• By 2022, Daimler will electrify the entire portfolio of Mercedes-Benz, offering customers at least one electrified alternative in all segments. To that, Mercedes-Benz will continue to further promote the development of plug-in hybrids and the introduction of 48-volt systems. Out of more than 130 electrified vehicles, more than ten will be fully electric passenger cars - throughout all segments, from the smart to the large SUV. • In the next few years, Mercedes-Benz Cars will invest ten billion euros in the expansion of its electric fleet and around one billion euros in a global battery-production network within the worldwide production network. This will create a global battery-production network that will comprise six battery factories on three continents.

• With the smart EQ fortwo and the smart EQ fortwo cabrio the smart plant Hambach is producing the fourth generation of electric vehicles of the small city car since 2017. The first Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle of the new product and technology brand EQ will roll off the assembly line at the MercedesBenz Bremen plant. Production of the EQC, a fully-electric SUV, will start in 2019.

Shortly after, the EQC will also be produced at BBAC, the joint venture of Daimler and BAIC. Further locations for future EQ models of Mercedes-Benz are the Mercedes-Benz plants Rastatt (Germany), Sindelfingen (Germany), Tuscaloosa (USA).

OVER 50 YEARS OF THE MERCEDES SALOON…

O

n the 9th and 10th of January 1968, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the completely redeveloped saloons in the upper mediumsize category in Sindelfingen, Germany. They are divided up into the model series W 115 (four- and five-cylinder engines) and W 114 (six-cylinder engines). The model series from the E-Class ancestral line impressed with its clear design idiom and a design autonomous from that in the luxury segment. The success of the "Stroke/8", as fans later nicknamed this vehicle generation, due to the suffix "/8" in the model designation, was overwhelming: for the first time more than 1 million units of a Mercedes-Benz vehicle family were sold. Alongside the saloons, they also include coupés, saloons with a long wheelbase and chassis for special bodies.

Today the "Stroke/8" is a coveted classic model series family from the Stuttgart brand. Particularly attractive specimens are regularly to be found in the offering from ALL TIME STARS, the Mercedes-Benz Classic vehicle trading place.

Over 50 years ago "The new Mercedes-Benz generation" celebrated its premiere. At the centre of the vehicle presentation with this motto were the completely redeveloped saloons in the upper medium-size category. They superseded the "fintail" saloons launched in 1961 with four-cylinder engines (W 110). On the exterior the respective models were identical in their dimensions. They could only be told apart by items of equipment plus radiator grille and bumper variants. At market launch the dieselengine models 200 D and 220 D and the models 200, 220, 230 and 250 were available with a petrol engine. The range was subsequently extended yet further. The stylistically and technically very modern vehicles represented a minor revolution. However the new upper medium-size category had nothing in common with the wild student protests of 1968.

Instead Mercedes-Benz used the "Stroke/8" saloon to successfully sharpen the profile of this market segment – the future E-Class. This development took on particular importance because the Stuttgart

brand extended the model series family in the same year to include coupés (market launch in November 1968) and saloons with a long wheelbase (market launch in December 1968). Mercedes-Benz was thus now offering an extensive portfolio of various body forms and engines in the autonomous upper medium-size category.

"Well-calculated perfection" Even at first glance the "Stroke/8" impresses with its clear and harmonious design which Paul Bracq created in the Stylistics department headed

by Friedrich Geiger. There were also new technical design features such as the rear diagonal swing axle. The engineers used it to achieve their aim of combining the brand's hallmark ride comfort with further improved driving comfort. The specialist journal "auto motor und sport" said the following in its 4/1968 issue about the 200 (W 115) and 250 (W 114) models: "The wet and icy Hockenheimring

confirmed the experiences gained on the Targa Florio route: driving stability is considerably improved with the new axle". The article's headline sums up the overall impression given by the "Stroke/8": it calls the new upper medium-size category from Mercedes-Benz "well-calculated perfection".

Development of the new vehicle generation started in 1961. Prof. Dr Fritz Nallinger, Member of the Board of Management responsible for Development at the then Daimler-Benz AG, was keen right from the outset to differentiate the new model from the luxury-segment vehicles to a greater extent than before. This meant that an end was finally put to the universal body, as used for the "self-supporting chassis-body structure" and "fintail" saloons. The specifications book envisaged a more compact vehicle than the W 110, but one which still offered the same amount of space on the inside. New chassis designs were also to improve the handling yet further. An early decision was taken to extend the drive system palette to include engines with six cylinders. A saloon with harmonious proportions was created with a wheelbase 50 millimetres longer than that of its predecessor, so 2750 millimetres, whilst the overall length was reduced by 55 millimetres to 4680 millimetres. The saloons were also 25 millimetres narrower and 55 millimetres lower than the small "fintails". Mercedes-Benz verified developments in passive safety with measures including 26 crash tests. They showed that the "Stroke/8" not only met the US standards in force at the time for a

collision at up to 30 miles an hour with 100-percent coverage; it exceeded them significantly.

The chassis was also considerably enhanced compared with the W 110. The two subframes were linked with the body via soft rubber bushes. At the front axle, double wishbones with offset pivots reduced dipping of the front section during sharp braking. At the rear the newly designed "diagonal swing axle" was used, a semi-trailing-arm rear axle.

It reduced track and camber variations in bends and during compression and rebound. For the first time in the upper medium-size category from MercedesBenz all four wheels were equipped with disk brakes. A power steering system and hydraulic level control system were optionally available.

Model of success in E-Class history In the classic-car scene the vehicles built in the upper medium-size category by Mercedes-Benz from 1968 to 1976 were known as the "Stroke/8".

But this designation for the model series did not originate from the brand itself. Rather, it came from fans' usage some time after the premiere in January 1968 – derived from the abbreviation "/8" which identified the 1968 models in the range. The abbreviation "Stroke/8" then became the catchy name for all the variants in this upper mediumsize category. These also included the top engine versions 280 and 280 E (1972) as well as the 240 D 3.0, the first five-cylinder passenger car in the world,

which came out following the 1973 facelift.

The market launch came hot on the heels of the premiere of the four-door saloons in January 1968. The four-door saloon with six windows and a wheelbase extended by around 650 millimetres was built as of March 1968. In contrast to the standard saloons, Mercedes-Benz equipped this long version as a matter of course with the larger 15-inch wheels due to the modified angle of approach/ departure and a correspondingly lower rear axle ratio. October 1968 then saw the construction of the two-door coupé. The sporty, elegant two-door model had the same wheelbase as the saloons but was 45 millimetres lower. The backrests of the front seats locked through a vacuum were automatically released when the doors were opened, thus facilitating good access to the bench seat in the rear. In contrast to the saloon the rear bumper was brought forward up to the rear wheel cutouts at the side.

The "Stroke/8" proved to be a runaway model of success: for the first time Mercedes-Benz made more than 1 million saloons of one model series family – in total 1.8 million. And there were even more than 1.9 million units of all body variants sold. And it is fitting that the two millionth passenger car produced since 1946 by Mercedes-Benz is also a "Stroke/8". The model 220 D saloon rolled off the line on 9 May 1968 at the Sindelfingen plant. The last "Stroke/8" vehicles were built in 1976 – at a point in time when production of the successor model series W 123 was already under way.

ercedes-Benz unveiled the fifth generation of its legendary SL-Class range, promoting the definitive luxury-sporting roadster for almost 50 years.

The SL-Class continues the marque's tradition of bringing innovative new technology to the market, as well as refining existing ideas. One of the most striking things about the car is its beautiful design. The SL-Class has links with its past, while looking extremely modern. The exterior lines give the car a powerful, lean stance, which is equally attractive with the roof open or closed.

One of the most stunning features of the SL-Class is its folding high-strength vario-roof. The SL's roof splits into three sections - the aluminium roof panel, the strengthened C pillars, and the rear windscreen, made of four millimetre thick safety glass.

When opened or closed, the rear screen rotates to reduce the amount of boot space taken by the folded roof. The entire opening or closing procedure takes just 16 seconds - compared with 25 seconds for the SLK-Class Roadster at the time.

The vario-roof, boot lid and automatic roll-over bar employ 11 hydraulic cylinders. In order to make loading and unloading of the boot easier when the roof is open, the "Easy Pack" can raise the folded roof by 20 degrees. The SL-Class's boot capacity is 288 litres with the roof closed, and 206 litres when open. Using the Tirefit system instead of a spare wheel adds another 29 litres to each figure.

An optional glass-topped "Panoramic Roof" was available from the end of 2002, and also fully automatic. However, all this technology is not at the expense of weight. The SL500 is 120kg lighter than its predecessor, with a kerb weight of 1770kg.

One of the most advanced features of the SL-Class is its braking system. Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) was the world's first "brake by wire" system fitted to a road car. The brake pedal is connected

electrically to the main brake cylinder, (removing the need for a vacuum-powered brake booster) and a powerful microprocessor passes the braking information on to the hydraulicallyactivated brakes using electrical pulses. In order to maintain the driver's "feel" for the brakes, a special simulator uses spring pressure and hydraulics to give pedal resistance.

SBC gives quicker reaction times than a conventional system, meaning shorter stopping distances - around three per cent quicker at 70 mph. In wet conditions SBC will gently apply the brakes to dry the discs, thus improving wet weather braking performance. The driver is unaware that the brakes are operated.

Moving inside, the cockpit is as stylish and attractive as the body. The driver and passenger can relax in their leather integral seats, while the flowing lines of the dashboard, and the high quality materials make it as robust as it is stylish.

The instrument cluster, with its twin cowls gives the first hint of a theme that runs throughout the interior. Excellent ergonomics, beautiful switch gear, and wood or aluminium trim all add to the ambience.

The SL-Class also had state of the art suspension. Active Body Control (ABC) was first introduced in the CL-Class in 1999.

Using hydraulically controlled servo cylinders alongside passive springs and dampers, ABC

gives a supple ride and helps the car stay level around corners. This gives the best of both worlds - limousine-like comfort with sports car handling. ABC was standard on the SL500.

The first SL was launched with the 306hp five litre V8-engined SL 500. It was available in Britain from April 2002, followed later in the year by the SL55 AMG. A V6 model followed at the end of 2002, with a 12 cylinder engine following later on.

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class looks became one of the most desirable new cars in the world. With stunning looks, impressive technology and a folding roof that will impress crowds, the SL-Class carries on the proud tradition of its predecessors.

The BRABUS lighting module for the roof of the X-Class offers exciting looks and further enhanced safety thanks to the increased light output. This precise-fit component features twelve powerful LEDS on either side, which provide even better illumination of the roadway in the dark when the driver activates the flashers or high beams. Four tailpipes in the striking design of a BRABUS sport exhaust lend the pickup an extravagant rear appearance.

powerplant engineers developed the BRABUS D4 PowerXtra performance upgrade.

After the simple plug-and-play installation of the tuning module, which can be done by any authorized Mercedes-Benz workshop in under an hour, the 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel puts out an extra 15 kW / 21 hp (20 bhp) and produces 60 Nm (42 lb-ft) more torque.

With a peak output of 155 kW / 211 hp (208 bhp) at 3,500 rpm and a bullish torque of 510 Nm (376 lb-ft), on tap constantly between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, the pickup accelerates from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 11.5 seconds. However, even more important for daily driving is the further increased pulling power of the turbodiesel engine.

A BRABUS performance upgrade for the soon to be launched X 350d top-of-the-range model is already in the development phase.

The SLK makes for a perfect summer sports car for those long drives in the sun.

B

ack in spring 2000, the range received a wide-ranging package of improvements and was expanded to a three car line-up.

The entry level model, the SLK 200 Kompressor model had a punchy 161 bhp supercharged four cylinder engine delivers acceleration from 0–62 mph in 8.2 seconds, a top speed of 138 mph and yet fuel consumption is just 29.4 mpg in the Combined cycle. The SLK 230 Kompressor continues with a 2.3 litre four cylinder supercharged engine, but fine-tuning has increased power to 194 bhp, offering acceleration from 0-62 mph in 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 148 mph. The SLK 320 features the advanced three-valves per cylinder V6 already used in other Mercedes-Benz models of its era and one of the most outstanding power units in its class. Its 215 bhp allows the car to sprint from 0-62 mph in 7 seconds, and on to a top speed of 150 mph. With 229 lb ft of torque from 3,000 rpm, it delivers effortless performance, excellent overtaking power, remarkable economy and low emissions.

All three engines meet the strict EU-4 exhaust limits which were not set to be introduced across Europe until 2005. This includes the provision of an on-board diagnostic system which constantly

monitors the engine and exhaust systems and informs the driver of a fault by means of a display in the instrument cluster.

All SLKs come equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Short-throw changes requiring minimum shift effort complement the car’s outstanding agility.

A 5-speed automatic gearbox with one touch tip change is optional on all models. ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), the sophisticated active driving safety system is standard on all models for the first time, as is Speedtronic, the cruise control system with speed limiter. In critical situations, ESP helps to retain the car’s directional stability and reduces the chances of skidding. The SLK has more sporty handling, thanks to rear and larger front anti-roll bars, revised shock absorber settings, reduced spring travel and a lowered body.

Standard wheels on the SLK 200 Kompressor were 15 inch gloss-finish light alloys. Burnished 16 inch wheels were fitted to both the SLK 230 Kompressor (6-spoke design) and the SLK 320 (5-spoke design). 17 inch wheels in either 7-spoke or AMG-design were optional.

The external styling of the SLK projects a broader, more powerful presence on the road. With restyled front and rear bumpers and ntegrated spoiler, new sill trim, body-coloured mouldings and

door handles. There were new rear lamps, stainless steel exhaust trims and a painted radiator grille. The indicator repeaters were then incorporated in the door mirrors rather than in the front wings.

Inside, the carbon look trim is replaced with a high-quality turned aluminium finish. For the first time, the SLK is also available with wood trim as an option – either eucalyptus or black bird’s eye maple.

Five interior colours are offered. Air conditioning is standard on SLK 230 Kompressor and SLK 320 models. Leather or wood trimmed steering wheels and gear lever inlay complete the picture, together with revised instruments and ergonomically refined sports seats with better side support. These are electrically operated in the SLK 230 Kompressor and SLK 320.

The already very high levels of passive safety have been further improved, particularly with regard to compliance with future Euro-NCAP crash regulations. Revisions include strengthened side members and increased front bulkhead thickness.

All SLKs have twin front airbags and side bags.

The SLK retains its class-leading features, in particular the fully automatic ‘vario’ folding roof which transforms the car from coupe to convertible at the touch of a button. Its steel construction offers all the advantages of a permanent hard top, yet is

every bit as versatile as a soft top.With its short overhangs front and rear, long bonnet, pronounced wheel arches and waistline rising to a powerful rear end, the SLK has a powerful on-road presence with all the attributes of classic roadster design.

Restyled front bumpers feature special protective strips to the top edge; these can be easily replaced should they become damaged in more minor collisions. Discreet spoiler edges along the side, the re-styled air intake with vertical ribs (SLK 320) as well as oval fog lights now further enhance the sporty character of the SLK with the result that the front of the roadster appears broader and thus more powerful. The simple matt black of the radiator grille with the distinctive pressed-metal pattern and the

Mercedes star in the centre is now painted a special gloss colour which gives further expression to the “face” of the roadster. Along the flanks changes are restricted to new sill covers and modified door mirrors which now house the indicator repeaters for greater visibility.

The rear of the SLK is enhanced with a redesigned bumper, which has a protective strip extending across the whole of its width.

The glass covers of the rear lights have an added elegance, while a new boot lid handle allows easier opening. Another new feature is the high-quality stainless steel exhaust tailpipe.

Body colour bumpers, door handles and body side mouldings ensure that the body appears as a unified whole.

The SLK can be equipped with xenon headlamps with beam adjustment, as an option.

A total of 10 exterior colours were offered which can be combined with leather appointments in a total of five colours: anthracite, merlin blue, siam beige, magma red and lotus yellow. The newest fabric design, ‘Arezzo’, was available in the three shades anthracite, merlin blue and magma red. These interior colours are used on the glove compartment cover, the central area of the door panels, the seats, the instrument cluster surround, the centre console sides, the cover of the storage compartment between driver and passenger, the gearshift lever and leather gaiter as well as the upper inlay of the re-styled fourspoke steering wheel.

REWIND: THE W203 UPGRADE… In the Summer of 2004, the then new-generation C-Class was launched.

More dynamic, impressive and attractive:

our years after the W203’s launch, Mercedes-Benz significantly upgrading the successful C-Class in terms of technology, equipment and design. The suspension, steering and six-speed manual transmission had a more sporty configuration, ensuring that the C-Class offers an even more agile driving experience. From summer 2004 a 192hp supercharged four-cylinder engine would join the engine range available for the Saloon and Estate models. In future the C 220 CDI will have an output of 150hp, which is 7hp more than before. With the new 367hp C 55 AMG Mercedes-Benz offering an eight-cylinder unit for the first time in this model series.

The interior of the upgraded C-Class will welcome a new cockpit design with sophisticated new controls, line-specific seats and automatic climate control as standard. The innovative, more scratch-resistant paintwork based on nano-technology is likewise standard. Bi-xenon headlamps with cornering light function, steering-wheel gearshift buttons for the automatic transmission and a new audio/navigation systems round off the highly desirable, high-tech specification.

Even at standstill the redesigned front end with its bumper, radiator grille and headlamps conveyed the dynamic characteristics of this Mercedes model series, which was available as a Saloon, Estate and Sports Coupé.

With state-of-the-art technology, good long-distance comfort and sporty agility, the C-Class had won the hearts of more than 1.26 million drivers

worldwide since May 2000. Never before has Mercedes-Benz sold so many vehicles from one model series in such a short time.

In addition to the sporty and elegant Saloon, the C-Class model family features the versatile Estate as well as the youthful and agile Sports Coupé, both of which were launched in 2001.

Mercedes-Benz had now reinforced the well-proven characteristics of the C-Class with an intensive model revision, at the same time making new emphases in terms of dynamism, comfort and perceived value.

Exterior: redesigned front end,

wider tyres and more scratchresistant paintwork

The increased dynamic appearance is above all created by the new look front bumper with its striking, sports car look, lower air intake and the likewise redesigned radiator grille, which had three slats, appears wider and therefore conveys an impression of power. Depending on the model and equipment, these slats are painted or embellished with a sporty matrix of perforations. Mercedes equipping the C-Class with clear-lens headlamps as standard. An increase in track width from 1493 to 1505 mm, 16-inch tyres as standard and wide-base tyres of size 205/55 R 16 also emphasise the dynamic appearance of the C-Class. In addition the CLASSIC, CLASSIC SE and ELEGANCE SE lines were equipped with the more sporty side skirts and rear bumper of the AVANTGARDE SE lines.

An even longer-lasting shine is guaranteed by the newly developed, more scratch-resistant paintwork, which is based on nano-particle technology and reinforces the legendary long-term quality of Mercedes.

Interior:

new cockpit design and high value impression Mercedes designers upgraded the interior of the C-Class with great care and attention to detail. This is shown not only by the discreet chrome trim on various controls on the dashboard, but also by newly developed switches and the modified seat design, which underlines the character of the different lines and offers even better seating comfort.

Four clearly arranged dial instruments with white lighting in the style of high-quality chronometers form the centrepiece of the completely redesigned cockpit. Between the speedometer and rev counter, information appears in a vertical central display which corresponds to the

buttons on the multifunction steering wheel and allows numerous individual settings to be selected. The form and function of the air conditioning controls had also been improved: large, clearly arranged rotary switches make adjustment easier and make a further contribution to the high-value impression in the interior.

Even the basic CLASSIC model is equipped with new exotic wood trim which highlights the high-quality appearance of the centre console and transmission tunnel cladding. In the AVANTGARDE SE line there was a choice of aluminium or optional bird’s-eye maple trim. The seats of this model variant are upholstered in a combination of fabric and the new material ARTICO as standard.

In addition, the C-Class Sports Coupé emphasises its youthful and dynamic character with a new three-spoke steering wheel featuring silvercoloured control buttons, aluminium trim on the centre console and sports seats. Automatic climate control is also standard equipment in the Sports Coupé.

Chassis: axles, steering and

transmission with a sporty configuration

Even more superb handling dynamics are ensured by various technical modifications to the suspension, steering and manual transmission in the C-Class. This package of measures, which is known as DIRECT CONTROL, includes newly developed front and rear axle bearings which provide more agile cornering with no loss of comfort, a more direct

steering ratio and reconfigured standard and sports suspension systems.

The new six-speed manual transmission was more easier to operate, more precise and had a shorter shift travel. In the C 320 and models with the sports package/AMG sports package and EVOLUTION/EVOLUTION AMG (Sports Coupé) Mercedes-Benz installed a transmission with a sporty configuration and significantly shorter shift travel.

Engines:

powerful new petrol unit and higher output for the C 220 CDI Mercedes-Benz extended the range of engines for the Saloon and Estate models with a 192hp supercharged engine which was previously only available for the Sports Coupé. With a maximum torque of 260 Nm, this four-cylinder power unit accelerates the C 230 KOMPRESSOR from zero to 62.5 mph in 8.1 seconds (Estate: 8.7 s) and provides a maximum speed of 149 mph (Estate: 146 mph). Thanks to the TWINPULSE system, which combines various technologies such as a supercharger, balancer shafts, intercooling, variable camshaft adjustment and four-valve technology.

The output of the well-proven four-cylinder diesel in the C 220 CDI had been increased to 150hp (previously 143hp). This engine is equipped with second-generation common-rail direct injection and runs with exemplary smoothness by virtue of balancer shafts.

C 55 AMG: new

performance standards in this vehicle class With the C 55 AMG Mercedes-Benz offered an eight-cylinder model in the current C-Class for the first time, thereby entering the performance domain of thoroughbred sports cars: 367hp and 510 Nm of maximum torque are previously unattained peak values in this vehicle class. From standstill the new C 55 AMG accelerates to 62.5 mph in only 5.2 seconds, and guarantees sporty driving pleasure at the highest level with its standard sports suspension and five-speed automatic transmission with steeringwheel gearshift buttons and AMG SPEEDSHIFT. Externally the C 55 AMG is distinguishable from the other models in the C-Class by its striking front-end design, with elliptical twin headlamps and an approx. 80 mm longer front-end structure. This makes it possible to install the beefy V8 engine. The striking design of the side skirts, boot lid and rear bumper also emphasises the high-performance character of the eight-cylinder model. 18-inch light-alloy wheels, tyres in size 225/40 R 18 (front) and 245/35 R 18 (rear), AMG sports seats with Alcantara upholstery and a decidedly sporty instrument cluster with silver-coloured dials with further sporting touches that Mercedes-Benz were keen to portray in their developed performance thoroughbred.

For over a thousand years Baiona has played its part in the defence of the Galician shores from pirates including our own Sir Francis Drake, with its stronghold extended and embellished until a magnificent fortress finally stood on the southern promontory, later to be replaced in the 19th century with the majestic fort and defensive walls that you can see today. Its links to Columbus are a principal feature of the port toda – in 1493 Baiona was the

first port in the Old World to learn of the discovery of the Americas following the return of the Pinta, Columbus’ fastest ship, and there is a museum in the harbour which is designed to look like a traditional Caravel where you can learn more about Columbus’ voyages. You will not be surprised to know that the town celebrates the Pinta’s arrival with a grand fiesta, la “fiesta de la Arribada” every March.

Easter is richly celebrated too with the processions and customs typical of Spain: floral carpets decorated with religious symbols abound, hooded brothers solemnly parade along the central streets carrying symbolic “pasos’’ (floats) and women make their mark with the highly popular Dolorous Madonna procession.

Baiona, the Pinta’s first port of call announcing the discovery of the Americas, and a highlight on one of Spain’s best coastal driving routes.

Nature lovers mustn’t miss the islands of Islas Cies, a haven of tranquillity just a short distance offshore where the number of visitors is monitored so as to preserve their natural attraction, fauna, wildlife and notably their ancient sand dunes. he new GLC Coupé makes quite an impression as the sports car among the Mercedes Benz SUVs. A standard-fit sports suspension as well as more direct sports steering, DYNAMIC SELECT and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive with 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission combine effortlessly superior ride comfort with decidedly sporty agility.

Two suspension variants with continuously adjustable damping are optionally available: the new DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL with steel springing as well as the AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension. The distinct sportiness and dynamism is enriched with the high safety and state-of-the-art assistance systems so characteristic of the brand. In June 2016 saw the sales release to test out the car to the full.

With an exterior length of 4.73 metres, a height of 1.60 metres and a wheelbase of 2.87 metres, the GLC Coupé is dynamic and compact in appearance. This makes the coupé almost eight centimetres longer and some four centimetres lower than the GLC, with which it shares basic architecture. steeply raked, while the continuation of the roof outline is lower, terminating in the elegantly flowing, muscular tail end characteristic of a coupé.

The striking features of the front end are its dominant, steeply raked diamond radiator grille with a single louvre and integral star, short overhang and SUV inspired chromed underguard.

The innovative headlamp concept, optionally in LED High Performance technology, sports the now characteristic Mercedes-Benz light signature.

A striking injection of sports car genes is provided by the large lateral air inlets.

The harmony with which the intrinsically opposed design worlds of coupé and SUV have been reconciled is revealed by the side view of the 1.60 metre-high GLC Coupé with its characteristic, stretched roof line of a sports coupé. The squat greenhouse blends in seamlessly with the side of the vehicle to underline its coupé character. The interplay between high beltline and wide shoulders results in proportions that lend the GLC Coupé its dynamic looks. This interaction is given added emphasis by the drawn-in waist between the dropping line and the lower, rearwards ascending light-catching contour.

A clear clue to the vehicle's distinctive SUV heritage is given by the optionally available side running boards. Flush with the outer edge

of the body, wide wheels up to a size of 50.8 centimetres (20 inches) together with ample ground clearance underpin the GLC Coupé's sporty, dynamic ambitions on unpaved tracks and unsurfaced roads.

Tail end with athletic looks The styling of the tail end gives added emphasis to the vehicle's coupé genes. With its pronounced shoulders, muscular bumper design with integral exhaust tailpipe trims and underguard in the form of a diffuser, the wide tail end of the GLC Coupé underlines the vehicle's athletic looks. This enables the coupé to hug the road. Narrow, split tail lights, a centrally positioned brand star and a sharp spoiler lip reflect a design that made its debut with the S-Class Coupé and which all Mercedes-Benz coupé models have since followed. Relocated to the lower section of the bumper, the number plate as well as the characteristic form of the rear window with its rounded upper area, are among the further stylistic features. The rear window dispenses with a wiper, as the airflow does not break away until after the spoiler lip, which means that water is unable to strike the rear window. Like the headlamps, the night design of the LED tail lights sports the hallmark light signature of MercedesBenz.

Distinctive stylistic elements of the GLC Coupé are the dashboard and the centre console with its flowing lines: a large, one-piece console panel below the semi-integrated media display performs a sweep from the centre air vents to the armrest. The GLC Coupé comes as standard with sports suspension including DYNAMIC SELECT with the five transmission modes ECO, COMFORT, SPORT, SPORT+ and INDIVIDUAL.

DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL sports suspension with steel springing and adjustable damping is optionally available. Also with this option, DYNAMIC SELECT allows the driver to adapt the individual character of the vehicle.

Uniquely in this market segment, the suspension can be equipped with fully supporting multi-chamber springing and electronically controlled, continuously adjustable damping. The AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension combines excellent driving stability and optimal comfort with sporty agility. Specific characteristics are preselected depending on the DYNAMIC SELECT settings. In SPORT and SPORT+ mode, the occupants feel as if they are sitting in a sports car with a high level of lateral dynamics due to the even tauter connection to the chassis, which is lowered by 15 millimetres. COMFORT mode makes for an especially comfortable ride with soft suspension. To ensure maximum possible driving safety also in this mode, the spring/damper forces are instantaneously adjusted, for example in case of a sudden evasive manoeuvre. Further

benefits of the system include reduced roll when cornering, automatic load sensing and lowering of the load compartment sill by 4 centimetres for more convenient loading and unloading.

Despite generous exterior dimensions and a long wheelbase – both of which benefit especially the occupants and the luggage compartment – as well as a full equipment configuration, the vehicle weighs in at just 1710 kilograms (GLC 250 4MATIC Coupé), which puts it among the leaders in this market segment. The main contributory factor in this is the all-new body, which features an intelligent mix of materials, comprising aluminium and high- to ultra-high-strength steels. Aluminium components additionally reduce the weight of the suspension, which also benefits ride comfort due to the attendant reduction in unsprung masses. The optional, fully supporting AIR BODY CONTROL multichamber air suspension features spring elements in lightweight yet robust glass-fibre-reinforced plastic, which reduce the system weight in comparison to conventional air suspensions.

The use of the new compact transfer case as an add-on module and the 9G-TRONIC with its magnesium transmission housing results in a 12 kg weight reduction in comparison to the previous versions installed in other models.

MG, set new standards in the daily-driver luxury-supercar class with their second fully in-house developed vehicle. Based on the AMG GT, the R Version has been re-developed to feel at home on the world’s most demanding race tracks.

Mercedes-AMG equipped the AMG GT R with bigger turbochargers, now producing 577 HP and 516 LB-FT. Also included is a first-ever 9-mode Traction Control System that allows the driver to adjust the traction control on the fly, depending on driving conditions. For more aggressive cornering AMG added active rear-axle steering, which allows for either high-speed corner stability or a smaller turning radius, depending on the driving speed.

To accommodate the added performance upgrades, Mercedes-AMG refined the exterior and aerodynamics of the vehicle. The track width is increased thanks to 57mm wider fenders, aggressive active aerodynamics integrated in the front- and rear-bumper and the panamericana grille, inspired by the AMG GT3 race-car. The AMG Performance Exhaust gives an extra aggressive roar through the central exhaust outlet when racing through the Green Hell.

RENNtech, determined to redefine these improvements, worked their usual magic and the AMG GT R evolved into to the ‘Orange-Beast’. RENNtech’s R3-Performance Package includes ECU Upgrade, BOV Adapters, High-Flow Air Filters and Stage II upgraded Turbochargers. To push the 4.0L V8 BiTurbo to new heights, RENNtech modified the OEM turbocharger core to fit a larger compressor, larger turbine wheel and equipped them with improved, more robust bearings. The R3 AMG GT R now produces 761 HP and 632 LB-FT, gains of up to +152HP and +91LB-FT. Launching from 0 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds and passing the ¼ mile in 10.7 seconds at an incredible 136mph, all on a non-prepped road surface with the OEM Michelin Cup Sport 2 tires.
