GO BEYOND BOOKS. There’s only so much you can learn from textbooks and lectures. It’s our belief that a truly dynamic education comes from a combination of traditional classroom learning and “getting your hands dirty.” How would you like to go on an archaeological dig with an internationally acclaimed anthropologist? Or conduct public opinion polling through the Mercyhurst Center for Applied Politics? Maybe you’d like to work on in-depth intelligence analysis for actual companies through the Center for Intelligence Research Analysis and Training (CIRAT). At Mercyhurst the sky’s the limit. No really, it is—we even have an on-campus observatory where you can get an up-close and personal view of the heavens.
When storms damaged a national landmark archaeological site that changed history, a group of Mercyhurst students got an experience that changed their lives. Students in our world-renowned archaeology program spent more than two weeks this summer working to re-excavate a portion of Meadowcroft Rockshelter, on record as the earliest well-dated archaeological site in North America, after it was damaged by heavy rains. Discovered 40 years ago by James Adovasio, Ph.D., director of the Mercyhurst University Archaeological Institute, the Meadowcroft site provides evidence of the continent’s earliest inhabitants, dating back 16,000 years. This disproved previously held beliefs that the continent was inhabited just 12,000 years earlier. Meadowcroft is regarded as one of the most carefully excavated sites in North America, and Adovasio and his students used many of those same excavation protocols during this operation while also introducing new state-of-the-art data collecting and archaeological recovery techniques. So when we say our students learn by getting their hands dirty, we mean it.

to work. While the knowledge you receive in the classroom is key, hands-on, real-world training you get in the field can be invaluable. That’s why most of our programs require students to earn career experience outside of the classroom. Our career services staff helps students connect with internship opportunities nationwide. These experiences not only give you a chance to put what you’ve learned to work for an actual company or organization and build your résumé, but can often lead to job offers upon graduation.

You’ll also get the opportunity to put your knowledge to work through your senior capstone project, which is equivalent to work that entrylevel professionals are actually doing. Chemistry Major, Physics Minor
After receiving both an athletic and academic scholarship from Mercyhurst, Rebecca couldn’t pass up the offer. Running was one of her biggest passions, and she loved the idea of being able to run competitively at the college level as a member of the Lakers cross country team. Little did she know that another passion—science—would help her land a highly competitive internship during her last summer before graduation.
Rebecca jumped into freshman year as a chemistry major in the honors program, and began conducting experiments side-byside with Professor Clint Jones, Ph.D. Quickly recognizing Rebecca’s natural abilities and ambition, Jones recommended her for an internship at Momentive, a global leader in the manufacture of plastic materials.
Rebecca’s 10-week gig at Texas-based Momentive was an opportunity of a lifetime. Not only did she gain valuable field experience, but she was granted a generous salary and a stipend.

Thanks to this trio, THE MERCYHURST MEN’S ROWING TEAM
became the first group ever to
set a world record in Erie, Pa. Rowing teammates Jeff and Jake joined forces with their buddy Adam from the Student Activities Council to organize the Mercyless EnduROWthon, a 24-hour marathon of nonstop indoor rowing. These guys pulled it off while excelling in their coursework, pushing through an intense practice schedule and making the most of their senior year. With hundreds of students cheering them on and an official judge from the Guinness Book of World Records at the scene, 10 men from the lightweight men’s small team shattered the existing record on the indoor rowing machine. The EnduROWthon raised more than $5,300 for local charities.

For more than a decade, Mercyhurst has been leading the way in promoting sustainable education and transformation in the Erie region. The Sustainability Committee and the Student Green Team have teamed up to complete several projects, such as:

DIG IN. At our farm in North East, student volunteers get their hands dirty tending to fruits and vegetables, while our hospitality and culinary students incorporate the fresh produce into culinary cuisine. Our small-scale Erie garden invites visitors to help themselves to the seasonal harvests.
GIVE BACK. Every senior class chooses to leave behind a legacy. Many of these gifts have been green, including Zurn Hall’s green roof that purifies rain water, an outdoor classroom that cuts back on electricity, and future plans for an on-site green house.
WASTE LESS. With conveniently located bins, our Mercyhurst Family recycles 17,549 pounds each week. That’s more than 900,000 pounds every year! And, with the addition of new Evive water stations around campus, students won’t need to rely on disposable plastic bottles as much.
GET EDUCATED. Students can major or minor in sustainability studies, or they can choose to concentrate in biological ecosystems, chemistry/environmental science or environmental policies. Currently, 7 percent of our student body comes from one of 44 countries, some of which include Ireland, Australia, Jamaica, Sweden, Ghana, Paraguay and Vietnam. STUDY ABROAD At Mercyhurst the world is your classroom. You can choose to spend a semester at sea, study abroad or join a faculty-led expedition or service trip outside of the U.S. Students who enroll in study abroad experiences continue earning credits toward their degree. Past trips have taken students to Japan, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, The Caribbean, France and England.
THE DUNGARVAN CENTER After a long-standing relationship with a sister school in Dungarvan, Ireland, Mercyhurst opened a dedicated international center in 2010. This was the first time students and faculty spent an entire term studying, earning credits toward their degrees, and becoming immersed in the history and culture of Ireland. Dungarvan is also the site of several annual international forums and conferences on intelligence studies.

International Student from Honduras Graphic Design Major, Photography Minor Deciding to study in a foreign country isn’t always easy, but for Rudy, a native of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, coming to the U.S. to earn his bachelor’s degree was a no-brainer. As a self-proclaimed “big fish in a small pond,” this adventure seeker was looking for a place where he could pursue his passion for the arts and photography. Following in his big sister’s footsteps, Rudy decided that Mercyhurst University was his perfect fit. It didn’t hurt that he received a generous scholarship.
Many aspects of Rudy’s culture have been somewhat “Americanized” — he thinks his adjustment to college life was similar to what most freshmen experience. That included living on his own for the first time, discovering new (and might he add, delicious) cuisine, and learning to navigate a new city.
Mercyhurst’s welcoming atmosphere and friendly and openminded students made it easy for Rudy to make friends. He even hiked through the Appalachian Mountains with a group of new friends that he otherwise would have never met.

There is plenty to do here – bike, kayak or relax on the beautiful beaches in Presque Isle State Park; visit the Erie Zoo; take in a show at the Erie Playhouse or Warner Theater; shop the latest trends at Millcreek Mall; or cheer on the local minor league teams. Students enjoy all of these activities just a few minutes away from campus. No need to dig for change for gas money or bus fare – just show your Mercyhurst ID and you can get on board any Erie city bus for free. There’s even a campus shuttle that can take you straight to downtown!
