2014 -15 SEASON MIAC Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture

FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to the 2014-15 MIAC season! This season, sit inside the intersection of architecture and music. Catch your breath when physics meets sculpture. And hold on as modern dance lifts classic Greek mythology into contemporary times. Join us as we showcase a diverse range of artistry in our 14-15 season – and don’t be afraid to wander somewhere you’ve never been. Who knows? You just might find your new go-to favorite.

No matter which shows pique your interest, arrive early! We are thrilled to continue our tradition of partnering with a wide range of local artists and small businesses to add pre-show activities to your entertainment experience. Explore a musical petting zoo before William Close and the Earth Harp Collective, get swept away in the sounds of the Irish fiddle before Moya Brennan Christmas and try your hand at computer animation before The Intergalactic Nemesis. We see our lobby as a community space, and one to make new friends – so if you see me before a show, please introduce yourself! I’d love to meet you and chat about music, art and life. At MIAC, we believe an institute is more than a place: an institute is the force that invites education and entertainment to collide. We are thrilled that 10 of our 13 artists will have the time for classroom conversations, movement workshops and technical exploration to enrich the educational experience of students in the Mercyhurst and Erie communities. We will welcome two of these performers – Samite and Project Trio – for weeklong stays during our second annual artistin-residency program. Catch them around town at the ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum, the Music for Veterans program, Collegiate Academy, The Mercy Center of the Arts and more. Stay tuned for details on where they’ll be on our website and through social media. We want to give you the chance to curate your own season. If you call our box office and tell them your favorite shows you’ve seen here or around Erie in years past, we would be happy to help you put together a season subscription package you’re sure to love. Please consider joining MIAC as a subscriber this season. Subscribers are the lifeblood of a performing arts center, and it gives us the chance to really get to know you as a friend of the arts. In closing, I’d like to send a special thank-you to our season sponsor, Cumulus Media, and all the other sponsors, friends and supporters of the arts at Mercyhurst. See you at the shows!

WILLIAM CLOSE AND THE EARTH HARP COLLECTIVE Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, 7:30 p.m. Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center Sit inside the intersection of music and architecture as William Close (of “America’s Got Talent” fame) transforms the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center into the Earth Harp, the world’s largest string instrument. The body of the Earth Harp rests on the stage, where Close runs his hands along its strings with rosin-covered gloves to create beautiful, cello-like tones. The strings extend over the theater and attach to the balcony, immersing the audience in resounding melody. The Earth Harp has been draped over amazing architecture around the world, from the Coliseum in Rome to temples in Vietnam and from the Kennedy Center to Burning Man in the United States. A visionary in sculpture and sound design, Close has designed 100+ other instruments.

ANAÏS MITCHELL Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, 7:30 p.m. Erie Art Museum “Terrific...Mitchell is a skilled storyteller... and her delivery gives an emotional complexity that welcomes and even demands repeated listens.” – PITCHFORK

First and foremost a storyteller, this Vermont- and Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter recorded for Ani Difranco’s Righteous Babe Records for several years before starting her own label in 2012. Among her albums are 2010’s sensationally reviewed “Hadestown” – a folk opera based on the Orpheus myth with guest appearances from Bon Iver, Ani Difranco and the Low Anthem – and 2012’s “Young Man in America,” hailed by the press as “an epic tale of American becoming.” If there’s a common thread in Mitchell’s work, it’s that she’s as interested in the world around her as the one inside her, tackling big themes with the same emotional intimacy most artists use to describe their inner lives. We’re thrilled to partner up with the Erie Art Museum for the second year to welcome her to Erie during her international tour to promote the limited release of her rare solo recording “XOA.”

MERCY KILLERS

“One-man theatre at its very best... If you love to be challenged by the theatre you’re watching and leave the theatre willing to ask the questions that make a difference, then Mercy Killers is a shining example of provocative theatre.” – Broadway Baby

Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, 7:30 p.m. Taylor Little Theatre Joe loves apple pie, Rush Limbaugh, the Fourth of July and his wife, Jane. He is blue-collar, corn-fed, made in the USA and proud, but when his uninsured wife is diagnosed with cancer, his patriotic feelings and passion for the ethos of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are turned upside down. In Mercy Killers, a new one-man play, Joe struggles with the uniquely American experience of losing your health in the land of plenty. Writer/director and Juilliard graduate Michael Milligan has brought the relatable story that lives within Mercy Killers to life in a theatrical form deserving of its title of 2013 Fringe First Award Winner at the renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, UK. Milligan has appeared on the Broadway stage as Little Charles in August: Osage County and De Bries in La Bete. In addition to his Broadway career, Milligan has performed at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Guthrie Theatre and the famous Folger Theatre in Washington, D.C.

Stay after! A panel of public health faculty and regional professionals will sit down for a discussion with playwright and actor, Michael Milligan, to examine the impact of this riveting piece of theatre.

THE OFFICIAL BLUES BROTHERS REVUE Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, 7:30 p.m. Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center There have been many imitators, but there is only one duo in North America sanctioned by Dan Aykroyd and Judith Belushi to don the official hat and sunglasses and walk in the legendary footsteps of Jake and Elwood Blues. Discovered in Las Vegas, performers Wayne Catania and Kieron Lafferty capture the infectious humor and unbridled spirit of the Blues Brothers like no one since John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd walked the stage. Backed by a powerhouse band, they’ll give you a show to remember, packed with classic hits from the Blues Brothers catalog, including “Soul Man,” “Rubber Biscuit”, “Sweet Home Chicago,” and more.

Arrive early! Join us an hour before the show when Mercyhurst’s own food truck, The Culinary Cab, will be parked outside the theater for a bite to eat, and Lavery Brewing Company, the official beer sponsor of MIAC, will be in the lobby serving up samples!

When he was 12, a music teacher placed a western flute in his hands, setting him on his way to becoming one of East Africa’s most acclaimed flutists. He performed frequently to enthusiastic audiences throughout Uganda until 1982, when he was forced to flee to Kenya as a political refugee. Samite immigrated to the United States in 1987, and now he and his wife Sandra make their home in Ithaca, N.Y. His smooth vocals accompanied by the kalimba, marimba, litungu and various flutes mesmerize audiences throughout the world.

The Los Angeles-based company explores the relationship between the danger of our environment and the human body through many different movement vocabularies: everyday movement, ballet, contemporary, acrobatics, gymnastics, martial arts and hip-hop. Diavolo has created dozens of dance works that form one of the field’s most compelling repertoires and will present two pieces at Mercyhurst: In “Trajectoire,” the performers rock, push and leap from a reeling ship in a visceral and emotional journey through the ebb and flow of the human experience. As the performers struggle to find their balance on a voyage of destiny and destination, “Trajectoire” shows the transcendence of the human soul against all odds. “Fluid Infinities,” set on an abstract dome structure sitting on a reflection of itself, investigates the persistence of life through struggle and the promise of life to change beyond the space of time.

JOSÉ JAMES Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, 7:30 p.m. Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center From The Late Show to Erie, New York City-based vocalist José James is described as a jazz singer for the hip-hop generation and is paying tribute to one of his main influences, Billie Holiday, for one night on the PAC stage. The son of a Panamanian jazz saxophonist, he studied at the prestigious New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City and was a finalist in 2004’s Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocalist Competition. Fusing together jazz, soul, rhythm and spoken word into his own unique brand of vocal jazz, the smooth, versatile singer-songwriter has released five studio albums with his 2008 debut The Dreamer and its 2010 follow-up, BlackMagic, both produced by the world-renowned DJ Gilles Peterson. Since then, James has transformed into an underground sensation in both the modern jazz and DJ culture scenes.

Arrive early!

Join us before the performance for a conversation with Mercyhurst World History and Dance faculty as we discuss mythology’s role in dance and movement throughout the centuries. Then, stroll through the Cummings Art Gallery before taking your seat.

As the oldest and most celebrated modern dance company in America, the Martha Graham Dance Company created and still embodies a timeless and uniquely American style of dance that has influenced generations of artists and continues to captivate audiences worldwide. The pioneering choreographer and her dancers radically expanded dance’s vocabulary of movement, rooting it in social, psychological and sexual ideas, forever altering the scope of the art form. The company will commission a new work by Andonis Foniadakis, a contemporary reflection evoking the essence of the myth of Narcissus and Echo. The work will be presented in a program titled Myth and Transformation, funded by the National Dance Project and commissioned specifically for this company. The presentation of Martha Graham Dance Company was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts and through the ArtsCONNECT program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

MERCYHURST THEATRE PROGRAM The Mercyhurst Theatre Program, under the direction of Dr. Brett D. Johnson, features an eclectic production season that nurtures students’ skills as performers, designers and technicians in a wide repertoire of classic and contemporary plays and musicals. ALL PERFORMANCES IN TAYLOR LITTLE THEATRE.

CABARET Book by Joe Masteroff, Music by John Kander, Lyrics by Fred Ebb, Directed by Dr. Brett D. Johnson Wednesday-Saturday, Oct. 22-25, 8 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 25-26, 2 p.m. Welcome to the Kit Kat Klub, where the Emcee, Sally Bowles, and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd. But as life in pre-WWII Germany grows more and more uncertain, will the decadent allure of Berlin nightlife be enough to get them through their dangerous times? Come hear some of the most memorable songs in theater history, including “Willkommen,” “Maybe This Time” and “Cabaret.”

ORPHEUS DESCENDING by Tennessee Williams, Directed by Dr. Brett D. Johnson Thursday-Saturday, April 9-11, 8 p.m. Sunday, April 12, 2 p.m.

THE TEMPEST by William Shakespeare, Directed by Dr. Doug Powers Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 4-6, 8 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 6-7, 2 p.m. The Tempest pits the desire for revenge against the demands of love and asks if man is capable of creating a brave new world. The story focuses on Prospero, the banished Duke of Milan. Marooned on a distant island with his daughter, Miranda, Prospero has spent 12 years perfecting his magic arts. Now, with the help of the spirit Ariel, he raises a storm at sea, bringing within his grasp the enemies who robbed him of his dukedom.

A Sicilian immigrant’s daughter, unhappily running a drygoods store in the South and tending to her dying husband, is reawakened by a mysterious drifter who appears in town. Orpheus Descending is at once a love story, a plea for spiritual and artistic freedom, and a portrait of racism and intolerance in a small Mississippi Delta town.
