How Many Lies Can you Put in an Interview Before People Notice?
New Teacher Edition
By Grace Cink
All new teachers were asked to participate in an interview about their time at Mercy so far. Unbeknownst to them, the questions of this interview progressively get more outlandish and untrue. How have you adjusted to Mercy and is there anything that has stood out to you? Mrs. Ray: I’m from India, and when I came to the US, I was in the public school system, but I didn’t like it. So, when Mercy approached me I was excited that they were all girls and more focused on academics. What Mercy traditions have you learned about? Mr. Carroll: Walkathon, the gift giving from cross country players to each other, there’s lots of gift giving here. Oh, the freshman frolic was funny to see the awkwardness of. What was your favorite part of Walkathon? Mr. Cahill: I think the assembly. It keeps surprising me but exciting me how willing students are to get excited about this, like when I was on the bus it was all seniors and they were screaming Taylor Swift lyrics. Have you felt welcomed/made friends with any teaches? Mr. Michaud: I’ve felt welcomed. I’ve made quite a few friends, but I won’t say names in case I forget someone… also I don’t know all their names. Mrs. Ray: I made friends with Mrs. Bach, she helped me over the summer with my teaching and we meet at robotics. Sometimes she comes early for that and gives me advice on helping my students. She is guiding me. Do you plan on participating in the faculty costume contest? Mr. Cahill: I’m not sure yet. I’ve told my English students I’m part of a couple costumes, one outside of school is Sharkboy and Lavagirl, but I’m not sure I want to bring that to Mercy yet. Have you been enjoying the free pizza in the faculty room on the last Friday of the month? Mr. Carroll: No, I didn’t know about it. I feel robbed! Do you prefer the first floor or basement faculty room? Mr. Michaud: Wait we have two different rooms? We have a basement??? Are you trying to make me look like an idiot… is that by the pool! Well… it’s too far of a walk. Mrs. Ray: I’ve never been to the basement. How do you get there? I think I like the first floor one. Have you met Sister Eleanor? Mr. Michaud: No, I only know Sister Peggy. *Sister Eleanor is the ghost.* Oh, that might be why! Will you be participating in the faculty bring your pet to work day this spring? Mr. Carroll: UHHH I will be a strong maybe? I guess I could bring my cat. Jasper is still a reactive dog and he would be scared of the energy of the school. Have you met the Mercy Manatee that ecology club sponsors at the Mystic Aquarium? Mr. Cahill: If you can tell me the name I’ve probably seen it. I’ve been there and seen the manatees. Have you seen any Mercy swim meets upstairs behind the stage? Mr. Carroll: *with a look of extreme skepticism* I have not watched any swim meets upstairs. Can I get a bucket of steam there because if that’s the case I need to go there. Mr. Michaud: Upstairs behind what?? I have no idea what you’re talking about. When did you start to question this interview? Mr. Carroll: I think when you asked about the costume contest I was a little skeptical. Mrs. Ray: *hysterical laughter* Oh my goodness I’m only in this room all the time I don’t know these things… they could make a swimming pool from the Walkathon. Maybe you should get me a pizza to make up for this. Mr. Cahill: When you asked about the swim meets. I thought you were trying you best and didn’t want to doubt you. But you tell me about these traditions, so I thought maybe it was a tradition nobody told me about. Mr. Michaud: Probably from the beginning. I hope I look dumb.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month By: Brooke Sheehy and Bridget Eberhart
The History Who started it? ● Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985 as partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries. ● Betty Ford helped to kick off this event after being survivor herself!
What is the goal? ● The starting goal of Breast Cancer Awareness month was to educate women about breast cancer and how
they could detect it before it got worse. ● Key goals: to promote mammograms as an important tool to fight breast cancer. ● Now, this month is also dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research and to celebrate those with
breast cancer.
The Pink Ribbon? ● In 1992, Estée Lauder cosmetics was the first to spark a campaign that used the pink ribbon. ● They handed out 1.5 million of them and said that the pink ribbon should be a visual reminder of Breast
Cancer Awareness Month. ● Now, the NFL has become one of the largest supporters of this month and nearly all players, coaches, and
referees wear the pink ribbon each October.
Mercy Shows Its Support! Fight Against Cancer sold “Go Pink” socks during lunch waves for breast cancer awareness during the first week of October! The Mercy High cheerleading team showed their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pink bows and pink t-shirts that say “Mary’s Fight” on the back in honor of a cheerleader's mom who just got done with all her breast cancer treatments and is now in remission.
Good Luck, Mark! This past Friday, the Mercy community paid thanks to our Assistant Director of Maintenance, Mark Broderick, for his distinguished and loyal service. Mark first joined the staff while still a student at Xavier, and over the past ten years has established himself as one of the most dedicated and energetic workers Mercy has ever known. He is a true first-one-there, last-one-to leave type, and the image of Mark zigzagging the athletic fields on the riding mower has become one of the comforting and familiar backdrops of life at Mercy. We wish Mark well in his exciting new position and hope to see him back!
Remembering a Re-Mark-able Run Daryl: Mark started working for me at the age of 16. It was a pleasure to see him mature into a responsible young man. The Mercy Community will miss him! We wish him the best in his future endeavors. Mrs. Durbois: Mark is one of those people I was really thankful to work with. When we were working on the Junior Prom set up last year he literally saved the day! Because he was so good at his job he would actually help me figure out what I needed to do. I already miss him! Tom DeLude: Mark was a wonderful co-worker during his time at Mercy. He did an amazing job on the school grounds, which he took great pride in. He always went the extra mile for Mercy and will be greatly missed.
Mr. Butterly: Mark and I are both huge St. Louis Cardinals fans, which is a very rare thing in Connecticut. So I loved starting every day getting a chance to chat about last night’s game. He also had a legendary work ethic—I think once a Tiger Times interview discovered he took something like 20K steps a day at work—he gave his all to Mercy and everyone knew it. Ms. Drewry: Mark Broderick has been a staple at Mercy High School for ten years. His tremendous work ethic and loyalty to Mercy impacted the people in this building beyond measure. He made himself readily available to help with any task, at anytime, for anyone. He is a master at his craft of building maintenance and grounds keeping. His presence and his friendship will be missed and we wish him success and happiness as he moves on to his next endeavor.
Mercy Memes By: Maddy Carbone
One year sister Peggy wanted to dress me up as a nun for Halloween, so I drove to her house at 6am, but when I got there bulldogs attacked me and all the nuns had to come out at get them.
My dad took my dog out for a late night walk, and the next thing you know he is in a coyote’s mouth. ASHLEY AMENDOLA “omg is it okay??” SOPHIE HEDGE “well, I mean its dead.”
During last summer's blackout I relied on candles and battery-operated lanterns for almost two weeks. At night, the darkness took over. My dog Marty and I adjusted as best we could. When you lose one of your senses, sight, your others are heightened. Marty, always looking out for us, jumps out of his bed at the slightest sound. One night, just before dawn, he got up and his barking was so furious I was sure someone was trying to break in. My heart raced as I turned on a lantern and walked to the window. I hesitated. I did not actually want to see what was out there. Marty kept barking. The slow sun rise gave me courage. I held my phone ready to call 911, held my breath, and drew the curtain. Nothing. Somehow that was scarier. Marty kept barking. I looked again. A small bird paced the deck, taunting. You can't get me, he seemed to say to Marty. I laughed, exhaling. A bird!
