of Gmail users access their accounts on mobile devices. (TechCrunch, 2015)

Because Uber also promotes carpooling, people are now more conscious considering the increase of information available regarding pollution and climate change. This is a trend which may even newly define the term “luxury”, having accessibility to sustainable options, at any cost.

SHARED MOBILITY INITIATIVES

The Shared-Use Mobility Center (SUMC) has 13 new leading Los Angeles transportation and policy experts added to help oversee the application of the Shared Mobility Action Plan for LA County. Backed with regional stakeholders, their plan is set to take 100,000 cars off the road in the county within the next five years “by expanding public transit and new forms of mobility such as bikesharing, carsharing and ride-hailing.

CITI BIKES-NYC

By the end of 2017, the total size of the NYC Citi Bike system will supply 12,000 bikes and contain 750 stations. With such a dense network, this system allows for a reliable form of transportation. And with stations every few blocks, a user never has far to travel to get to a bike, knocking down the ever-annoying notion and design implication of the first and last mile gap.

Specialized ride-sharing

Kango, an app (currently used in the SanFransico Bay Area) devised to transport and even babysit children, provides busy or working parents the ability to find childcare, that can fit any type of schedule. The app allows for formal driver introductions and meetings, scheduled pick-ups, aggressive background checks, and even real time communication as the ride is in progress.

DRIVER : ENTREPRENEURSHIP

With millennials being coined as the most entrepreneurial generation of all time, the ability to access information and clients via web design and webshops has been pivotable. In turn, as this generation that“(values) new experiences over ownership or possession of products,” transient locations in exotic spots with unique events pushes this notion. The surge in foodtrucks since 2008, resulting in popularity by millennials and their desire for cheap experiences accompanied by health benefits, has expanded to almost all forms of retail and body conscious transitional and pop-up experiences imaginable.

96%

of small business owners/marketers use social media marketing, and

92%

of those agree or strongly agree with the phrase, “Social media marketing is important for my business.”

By the end of 2017, food trucks will generate about

67%

$2.7 billion in revenue.

SOLAR CHARGING STATION

Street Charge- the first design of a solar, drop-in, community charging station for mobile devices, was designed with the combination of community and public spaces in mind. Spanning from parks to beaches, campuses, office parks and beyond, many public areas lack access to outlets or any power infrastructure. Street Charge is able to provide free and reliable recharging at any location. It is 100% off the grid, and can be “dropped in anywhere, becoming an elegant symbol of the beauty of drawing clean power from the sun.”

URBANSPACE

Essentially cementing the culture of open-air markets as a staple in New York during the holidays, UrbanSpace has been pioneering the idea of popup events since the 1970’s. Today their brick and mortar food hall offers foodies a year-round destination, featuring “20+ chef-driven concepts within an truly iconic New York space.” Throughout the year, UrbanSpace focuses on bringing exciting markets containing a vast lineup of chefs, artisans and makers, giving the most unexpected venues an incredible array of food.

HOSPITALITY TRANSITION SPACES

From the design group concrete, their latest concept, Zoku, located in Amsterdam, is designed for those who need more than a couple days stay, but don’t want to rent an apartment or stay in a hotel. Their concept is the blurring of a hotel room, a studio apartment and an office space –and “in the middle, (they) place a table”. There are 125 units with communal spaces where residents can socialize, even by cooking together. With the notion of human contact taking priority, (concrete) “make things both beautiful and sustainable. Design that lasts, that looks good and does good”

Flexibility in

Technology customization

DRIVER : RESPONSIVE DESIGN

Responsive Design allows technology to automatically respond to user preferences (user behavior and environment) such as via screen size, platform or orientation. This eliminates the redesign phase of each new product, as it is placed on the market. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a “style sheet language used for describing the presentation of a document written in a markup language.” This is coding used primarily for visual styles, and is evolving, allowing people to customize web pages with almost no limitations.

73%

of people say they use Facebook for professional purposes.

Responsive Design can be addressed not only in terms to software, but even in ever developing Responsive Architecture. Products such as smart glass, that changes from clear to opaque, once the capacity of a room reaches a level of density.

“A survey of US consumers and retailers by Infosys found that among retailers using personalized offers and promotions:

74% experienced an increase in sales, 61% an increase in profit, and 55% an increase in customer loyalty.”

AIR BNB initiative

Airbnb recently tried a customization pitch, allowing guests to renew their connections via holiday greeting emails. These were designed by Airbnb, but allowed senders to quickly customize. This campaign did not have a sales-oriented goal in mind, but yet it produced very high rates of emails opened and email click-throughs. This is turn generated more than 600 bookings. Compared to emails sent with the intent to spur reservations, this number exceeded any prompt the company has sent.

mental cANVAS

Although not the first attempt at a software to save the act of sketching, Mental Canvas is revolutionary by giving users the ability to sketch freely in a three-dimensional space without the restrictions of traditional CAD modeling. The software founder, Julie Dorsey, calls this work “graphical media”; “not fully flat but not fully 3D.” The intent of this software is to be sold with Microsoft Surface devices, namely, the newly announced Surface Studio, allowing a “natural sketching experience on a virtual canvas.”

augmented reality apps

One of the popular app’s for at-home designing, Houzz, features the use of “augmented reality, which shows digital images on top of real-life objects when you look at them on a smart phone or tablet.” This technology also allows the user to move items such as furniture or fixtures in their own home, at any given angle, prior to purchasing. The user also has the ability to see the given object with realistic materials and textures, rather than just forms or shapes.

QUALITY

ADAPTABILITY

DIVERSITY

People want to know they can trust the products or spaces they are choosing to spend time in.

People don’t want to be in places that could potentially negatively isolate them.

People learn more from physically being exposed to spaces/objects.

People want to know that what they are investing in, will impact the greater good.

People want spaces that adhere to them.

People seem to be better situated when the can first understand the environment around them.

What if if there was a way to allow any desolate space to have the ability to be of public use through the implementation of a system?

What if there was a way for users to completely customize a space to their different needs, but the space would revert back automatically?

What if if there was

a way to design a public space that is just as transitional as a studio loft to an office space?

What if if there was a way to create pop-up public spaces, that did not sell merchandise but rather let different cultures exchange experiences?
