Catherine de Zegher Women’s work is Never Done Collected essays on women artists
In this impressive anthology, internationally acclaimed curator and director Catherine de Zegher (° 1955, Groningen) compiles 25 influential essays on women artists from the numerous books she has written and edited throughout her career. Like many of de Zegher’s previous projects and books, Women’s Work Is Never Done promotes the feminine principle, showcasing the work of female artists from across the world. Though her approach to art often has a global reach, de Zegher directs her attention deeper, to the intimate and the relational, to the specific work and the distinctive project of each artist.

Shooting Range Photography & the great war Inge Henneman, ed.
Shooting Range draws the story of the use of film and photography during World War I. This was a time when both media were used as new means of mass propaganda. The book questions what exactly was shown and what was deliberately omitted for the public. Shooting Range takes the stance from the public view and sheds new light on the historical context in which these images emerged, and were used and reused as genuine weapons of war.

Tommaso Speretta with an afterward by Loring McAlpin REBELS REBEL AIDS, Art and Activism in New York, 1979–1989
REBELS REBEL is a chronological survey of activist art in New York from 1979 to 1989, reviewing the radical responses artists gave to social problems, especially the AIDS crisis, in the conservative political climate of their day. It presents activist art as a potent manifestation of public art, through which artists and art practice can shape and change society. The book is a tribute to art collectives who confronted society’s problems and what they saw as threats to the basic principles of democracy. Their story still stands today as an example of how a collective voice can rise above prejudice and inequality, overthrow injustice and make itself heard.

Hommage Robert Hoozee Editors: Catherine de Zegher, Robert H. Marijnissen, Sylvia Van Peteghem, Koen Van Synghel, Anne Pingeot, Marc Dubois, …
Under the thirty-year directorship of Robert Hoozee (1982–2012), the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent underwent a complete transformation. Hoozee’s multidisciplinary approach towards Belgian art from the period 1789–1950 was strongly reflected in the exhibitions created under his leadership. Acquisition highlights ranging from James Ensor, Fernand Khnopff, George Minne, Odilon Redon, Oskar Kokoschka and Erich Heckel to Raoul De Keyser illustrate Hoozee’s unrelenting pursuit of excellence, while in his exhibition policy he set new standards with the ground-breaking ‘Paris–Brussels’ (1997) and ‘British Vision’ (2007–08). In this commemorative album, influential international authors look back on this remarkable period in the museum’s history. Their contributions paint a kaleidoscopic picture of an extraordinary man who, at his untimely death in 2012, left behind a museum of international repute.

Christos Bokoros BOKOROS
Nine years after his last exhibition in Athens, Christos Bokoros came to the Benaki Museum with the exhibition The Bare Essentials. On boards taken from mountain bridges, he paints the weary and beleaguered together with life’s basic necessities: a little food, water to keep ourselves decent, a shelter and an open door. The narrowness and length of the works underline the narrowness and length of the path we walk to the opposite shore. The trotted timber recalls the multitude of unknown people who have trodden over it. His paintings, an exercise in self-knowledge, first reflected upon his relationship with his origins and then upon history as we experience it. More recently, he ponders over the idea of measure when it comes to people’s concerns. He reflects upon what is absolutely essential in our lives. On how we might raise ourselves to our full stature, freed from all excess.

Royden Rabinowitch The Hooft Collection Roman Kurzmeyer, Christa-Maria Lerm Hayes, Frank Maes & Roland Nachtigäller
The Canadian artist Royden Rabinowitch (°1943, Canada) is one of the most important sculptors of the late twentieth century. His oeuvre addresses questions that modernist sculpture was unable to answer and takes up a position in an area of the experience of space that is occupied today, above all, by installation art, which is perceived by the public as a topical medium. Rabinowitch understands the history of sculpture in the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century as “a constant attempt to treat space less vaguely, less continuously, less abstractly, i.e. to use a more and more discrete, concrete treatment, thus enacting judgments on the increasingly abstract treatment of things generally.”

Fostering a cross-pollination between the digital and the physical, Nick Ervinck (°1981, Belgium) explores the boundaries between various media. As a pioneer in 3D-printed sculptures the artist takes a vanguard position in the field of digital technology while at the same time his works hold numerous references to the tradition of sculpture and architecture. This first monograph focuses on this tension between innovation and tradition and gives an inside to the artist’s abundant archive. The concepts body, building, history and nature that are crucial for the artist’s oeuvre, are the leitmotifs in the book. The authors explore Ervinck’s work from different angles while a great quantity of images show the genesis of form, some of his most succesfull works and futuristic ideas that till this day were impossible to create.

Ida Ekblad THE ROOT CELLAR Barry Schwabsky
This monograph features a new body of work, which artist Ida Ekblad realized for a solo exhibition at De Vleeshal in Middelburg, The Netherlands (November-December 2013). Fundamental in Ekblad’s work is an interest in the historical perspective as a central element of our time. Through combining historical perspective in a contemporary cultural and social element, Ekblad gives an answer to the superficial connotation of a contemporary society based on speed and consumption. The use of discarded material to realize assemblages is a translation of the recuperation of the element of history to embrace a more complex relationship between art and time.

Bart Van Dijck Great-hearted All Friends Horizonno Matter What My Line Annelies Nagels Christine Vuegen
Bart Van Dijck (B, °1974) creates video’s, drawings, sculptures, installations and documentaries. His work, a constant exploration of identity, originates out of a fascination for domestic and foreign folklore. His research often involves youth- and subcultures, which are known for their unique visual cultures which allow for diverse and at times conflicting influences to unite naturally. Van Dijck recognizes in these subcultures a contemporary counterpart to traditional folklore. Through his work he analyses how symbolism and rituals determine the identity of such groups. Van Dijck also focuses closely on the subconsciousness. He wants to reach out to the invisible and make it tangible for the audience. For his first solo show at De Warande the artist presents a new video on traditions and folklore in Belgium.

The sculptures and installations of Adriaan Verwée (°1975, Belgium) often balance on the boundary between remainder and completed image. Verwée is less interested in the end result than in the creative process of the work. What might an artwork be or become? When does a work become legible as an image? These are his central questions. Verwée combines geometric structures made of wood, plaster and glass with everyday objects or furniture, always in varying compositions. Moreover, his work is always related to the exhibition space. This monograph comes out at the occasion of his eponym show, which runs from August 28th til November 2nd at M Museum, Leuven.

Johan Clarysse Hidden Agenda Willem Elias Isabelle De Baets Interview with Hans Theys
Hidden Agenda presents Clarysse’s artistic output of the past seven years, in which concepts of identity construction, communication and non-communication are key, along with the drives and aspirations of the condition humaine. Clarysse’s figurative paintings display a layered, hybrid imagery that questions and researches the ambiguity proper to human nature. His paintings tease and confuse, destabilize well-known images and themes, giving them power and force. Thus an oeuvre is created that is both playful and serious, clear and equivocal, subdued and intense.

iii is an artist-run platform for the development of self-made media based in The Hague, which supports idiosyncratic research trajectories that zig-zag between disciplines and distribution channels. Within the activities planned for 2014, iii will produce a publication on the subject of ‘self-made performative media’. The intention is to reflect on iii’s particular approach of starting from scratch that involves designing and constructing a medium from the ground up, as well as notions of cultural agency, identity and negotiation that apply when redefining the terms of relationships with audiences and cultural institutions. Since iii stems from an interdisciplinary approach to art and technology that has a strong and unique history in The Netherlands, the publication also intends to offer a reflection on this unique background, tracing lines of thought behind the development of current practices and offering a window on the local discourse to a global community of artists, researchers and cultural operators.

Jan Steen BEING IN PLAYING
This publication includes six fictive conversations on the dynamism and processes that are at the basis of the actor’s dramaturgy. These conversations never really took place – or at least not outside the author’s own thinking process. The interlocutors are not based on real people. They are not psychologically realistic characters, but ‘voices’ that speak and argue from the perspective of their specific functions within the field of theatre. They are perspectives and functions that the author himself has experienced and through which he has reasoned throughout his whole professional life, being an actor, a director, a teacher and still considering himself to be a student. The dialogue format offers an opportunity to engage in a dynamic and open ‘conversation’ with these different functions and with the reader of the text, without any hierarchy among them. Complementary to the text, there are photos and a DVD with images of the author’s work.

The place in which the book is set is the problematic border area of Mexico and Texas, USA, the goal of the publication is a state-of-the-art scanning of the attracting and repelling forces that appear between intellectual and sensual antipodes. Jan-Erik Andersson Life on a Leaf
In this intriguing book, Finnish artist Jan-Erik Andersson writes about his experience of dwelling and living in a “total artwork”. By addressing seemingly naïve questions like: Why don’t we build houses shaped like flowers, shoes, or a leaf? Andersson intentionally challenges the invisible borders guarding the conventional definitions of architecture. The vision he has shared through many projects with his collaborator, architect Erkki Pitkäranta, led him into a long and successful journey to build a leaf-shaped family house, Life on a Leaf, based on his own art and stories. This extraordinary house, in Turku, Finland, was completed in 2011. Stressing the important role of art in the design of buildings, the book describes different ways of bringing contemporary art into architecture – not primarily as free-standing objects but as an integrated part of the structure of the house. The book is based on Andersson’s Doctorate in Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki.

Opatishawockalocka: a Native American place name that was shortened in 1926 to become Opa-locka, Florida, an incorporated city, classified as Moorish Revival. Drafted by architect Bernhardt E. Muller and city planner Clinton Mckenzie to the intiative of aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss and cattle rancher James Bright. The themed city was constructed inbetween set prop and reality and created at the intersection of planes, trains, boats and the automobile. This fantasy-based garden city suburb of Miami drew its inspiration and promoted itself through themes made popular by the book 1001 Arabian Nights and the film The Thief of Bagdad (1924). Opa-locka’s complex trajectory has led it to being frequently quoted, acting as an adjective in contemporary hip-hop music.

This book can be seen as the core – or at least a main synthesis - of the overall aspiration of Ricardo Brey for his upcoming project in Cuba. It has therefore been developed as a separate undertaking. While it is not an artist book in the traditional sense, it is definitively a project by an artist. Its ambition is to create a sense of the artistic space that Brey wants to offer, with a polyphony of voices and an immersive sphere in which a quality of behavior is of prime importance. It will offer an integral view of his oeuvre, in which the historical is integrated but the focus is on present validity.

Strik’s book is a fluent stream of images and words in a strong connection to each other where the look inside and the outside happens simultaneously. The images continue within a long historic artistic line of visionary artists who probe the tresholds of human essence. Strik’s intense, poetic practice explores the possibilities of metamorphosis and the process of (artistic) creation. In conversation with aspects from El Greco, Goya, Darwin, Freud, Munch, Ensor or Duchamp her approach is archaic in a higly alert way. The viewer will be confronted with energetically-charged apparations transmuted into shapes, portraits and figures on paper, now fixed as definitive states of being. Heidi Voet ONE IN MANY Mathieu Borysevicz, Aimee Lin Yu, Filip Luyckx
Heidi Voet’s multi-disciplinary artistic practice is characterized by her playful and transformative use of objects to make critical social commentaries about everyday life. She transforms the banal into something wondrous, and in the process unearths concerns, connections and consequences that underlie the moment. Heidi Voet frequently deploys popular images or objects found in contemporary Chinese culture as central subjects in her works since her move to China in 2006. For one of her best-known series, Voet created elaborately-patterned rugs by weaving thousands of colorful digital watches. The watches all have synchronized alarms, but inevitably malfunction and chime off beat over time creating an impromptu electronic sound installation.

Ištvan Išt Huzjan OHO and the KOREAN AVANT-GARDE ASSOCIATION
As one buys or comes to win the publication at hand one has a right to ask Ištvan Išt Huzjan to come to his or hers preferred location and perform his piece entitled OD TU DO TU (From Here To There). Huzjan’s performance is a simple gesture where the artist enters the chosen location and barefooted measures the distance between two random architectural elements chosen together by the artist and the person in possession of the book. To mark the starting point of the measuring the artist writes down OD TU (from here) directly on the first architectural element and to mark the end point the artist writes down the measured distance on the second architectural element DO TU MERI x STOPAL (to here measures x number of feet). During the performance the artist talks about his work and the context of the publication. This publication is signed and numbered on 50 copies.

Daniel Linehan A NO CAN MAKE SPACE
A No Can Make Space is a book as a choreography. For this publication choreographer Daniel Linehan has gathered texts and poetic fragments, which he used as part of his choreographic practice. He organized these writings into several chapters according to their main themes: repetition, sequence, rhythm, value, change, tension, silence. A No Can Make Space is an artistic project of collecting and categorizing, a method Linehan often uses when making dance performances. Thus this book becomes a way to think about how making a book can be an extension of making a dance.

a2o architecten OVER CONNECTIVITEIT Stefaan Evers, Hein Smedts, Luc Vanmuysen (eds.)
On connectivity offers readers some insight into the world of a2o-architects. It explains why a2o’s designs and buildings are connective. It connects the ‘now’ with the past and the future, with the importance of context and the autonomy of architecture. It connects engagement, craftsmanship and imagination in a contemporary way. The work of a2o-architects is situated in Belgium and the Meuse- Rhine Euroregion. a2o’s architecture occupies an area of tension between two realities, which also play a central role in this book: the main story, the leitmotiv, about its philosophy and the creative process. And the particular, the tangible, about contemporary themes and architecture. The two storylines are interwoven throughout the book, allowing text and images to make their own connections. This is a book about connectivity, about us dreaming about the perfect place to live or to work.

THE DARK GALLERIES A Museum Guide to Painted Portraits in Film Noir, Gothic Melodramas and Ghost Stories of the 1940s and 1950s Steven Jacobs & Lisa Colpaert
Imagine a museum in which the portrait of Carlotta Valdes, an important prop in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, hangs on a wall next to the painted portrait of the title character of Otto Preminger’s Laura and opposite the uncanny portraits of the desired or murdered women in Fritz Lang’s Scarlet Street, George Cukor’s Gaslight, and Nicholas Ray’s Born to Be Bad. In an adjacent gallery, the visitor of this imaginary museum can contemplate the portraits of patriarchs that feature in films such as House of Strangers, Suspicion, Gilda, and Strangers on a Train. This is precisely the concept of this book. Dark Galleries deals with American (and some British) films of the 1940s and 1950s, in which a painted portrait plays an important part in the plot or the mise-en-scène. Particularly noir crime thrillers, gothic melodramas, and ghost stories feature painted portraits that seem to have a magical power over their beholders.

Keren Cytter MOP Museum of Photography Jessica Vaughan Kyla McDonald
MOP (Museum Of Photography) aims to mirror and challenge the entire history of photography. It contains approximately 800 polaroids that document the artist’s daily life and travels around the globe in the course of a year. The collection tries to break the boundaries of the personal and the institutional, by placing all photographs under one roof in an original size and a seemingly arbitrary yet chronological order. The photographs are shifting from familiar, atmospheric to staged, portraits, found footage, experimental and kitsch. Each page in the book contains 4 colorful photographs.

Wagner L’OPERA HORS DE SOI: LA PENSÉE ET L’ART Christophe Imperiali Charles Méla

ThE STAR ALPHABET BY E.L.T MESENS Dada and Surrealism in Brussels, Paris & London Phillip Van den Bossche, Christiane Geurts-Krauss, Virginie Devillez, Nele Bernheim, Xavier Canonne, Simon Delobel, Erich Weiss, Peter J.H. Pauwels
Edouard Léon Théodore Mesens (1903–1971) was a main figure in twentieth-century European art. He was known as the “talisman of surrealism”. Like a collage, his artistic vocation comprised various fragments: he was a composer, poet, publisher, photographer, exhibition maker and above all a passionate promoter of art. In the early 1920s E.L.T. MESENS played an active role in the European art scene, becoming friends with Tristan Tzara, Theo van Doesburg, Erik Satie and other artists. He appointed himself one of the driving forces of the surrealist movement. His life was entirely devoted to imagination and poetry. Discover l’amour fou in The Star Alphabet by E.L.T. MESENS.
