HISTORIC

Merriam Moments 1911 Time Capsule

This year, our historic Merriam Moment is a little different. Unplanned. Discovered. Surprising. In 2020, we discovered a time capsule nestled into the original cornerstone of the Merriam Grade School portion of the former Irene B. French Community Center in downtown Merriam. It’s not every day a piece of history more than 100 years old is discovered. But, that’s exactly what happened in August when construction crews removed the 1911 cornerstone from the community center. As crews worked to preserve the cornerstone, they found a tiny tin box inside the concrete casing. The tin box was a time capsule set during the Merriam Grade School’s dedication ceremony on June 27, 1911. The decomposed box contained signatures of students and residents who attended the event and a “Laws Relating to the Common Schools of Kansas” pamphlet from 1909. ▶ Read the Laws Relating to the Common Schools of Kansas on the State of Kansas’ website at https://bit.ly/3plgMcA.

Campbell was the son of Merriam’s founder David Gee Campbell. James owned a store in Merriam and was very active in the community. James was the father of Marie and Blanche Campbell, also present at the dedication ceremony. Marie was a Bell telephone operator for 36 years, even manning the lines during the floods of 1914 and 1935. Marie was later known as the “Queen of Historic Merriam.” She passed away in 1994, one week before her 100th birthday.

▶ Charles Loomis was a well-known figure in Merriam. He was a retired physician and served as vice president at Shawnee State Bank for 45 years. Married to Viola Loomis, Charles also served as the Merriam School Board treasurer. The Loomis property is now located on the National Register of Historic Places at 8325 Johnson Drive.

▶ Fred Reiger owned the Merriam Bakery at 57th St. between Kessler Lane and Merriam Drive. The building burned down, but Fred rebuilt his bakery a little farther south.

DE S TIN ATION DOWNTOWN The downtown is the heart of any community. It’s the place where folks gather to shop, grab a bite to eat, or meet up for a drink. Downtown is the hub of local businesses and the spot where fun community events take place. Downtowns support economic vitality and enhance the experience, image, and lifestyle of the entire town. Merriam’s downtown has been around for a long time. From the early mercantile days of dry goods, bakeries, a meat market, and local watering holes in the 1800s, to the current offering of various dining and drinking establishments, a world-renowned instrument shop, or a zen-like retail boutique, downtown Merriam is a destination all in itself. Check out the things you can do, places you can shop, and sights you can see in downtown Merriam.

Strings Violin Shop has outfitted beginner to professional musicians with the most perfectly suited string instruments created in the Midwest. Art is easy to find in downtown Merriam. “Still Time” is a tall, stone tower with a large soothing wind chime located at the corner of Johnson Drive and Merriam Drive. Further north at Merriam Marketplace, you’ll find “Planting the Seeds,” where each sphere’s brilliant mirror finish suggests a large, sprouting seed. Another block north at Waterfall Park, look for the playful nine-foot tall caterpillar standing next to a 12foot cairn (a stack of granite river boulders) with a butterfly perched on top. “Hmmm...” was created as a playful exploration of placemaking and identity.

W I L D W E S T F U N AT D O D G E T OW N Read this story aloud and ask someone to give you words to fill in the blanks below with a noun, verb, or adjective. Tip: Don’t tell them what the story is about until it’s time to read it with their answers. Noun: Person, place, or thing

Adjective: Descriptive word

Verb: Action word

Today, we visited the __________________(noun). There was so much to do, but first on the list was outfitting our __________________(noun, animal) with new __________________(noun) from the local blacksmith. Once the animals were all finished, we decided to head over to the __________________(noun, place) where we filled our supply bags with __________________ (noun), __________________(noun), and __________________(noun). From there, mom remembered that she needed to __________________(verb) a parcel to Grandma in __________________(noun, place). We waited in line for a bit and even though it was __________________(adjective), it was still fun to meet the __________________(noun, person). We saw lots of people __________________(verb) tickets to ride the train. There were rows and rows of parents and tots waiting for their turn to see the __________________(noun) and __________________(noun). When the train pulled into the station, everyone __________________ (verb). We passed really quickly past the __________________(noun). I remember reading about this place and mom said I better never wind up here. It doesn’t look so scary, but the __________________(noun) on the windows and the __________________(noun, person) standing guard on the front stoop say otherwise. Our last stop was kind of __________________(adjective). I thought we would meet some animals since it was called the Pony Express, but the only thing inside there was __________________(noun) and __________________(noun). A pretty __________________(adjective) horse came running up with bundles of mail on either side of him, so that was fun to watch. As we got ready to head back to our homestead, we stopped to __________________(verb) the local horse named Astra. He’s a __________________(adjective) old guy, but he greets every visitor to Dodge Town with a __________________(noun or verb). exploremerriam.com | 21

Merriam Historic Plaza | 6304 E. Frontage Road This bronze sculpture and water fountain by artist Kwan Wu was dedicated in 2006. The mother bear and cubs celebrates one of the most popular features of historic Merriam Park, a 40-acre amusement park once located in Merriam.

Historic Merriam Mural

Merriam City Hall, Community Training Room | 9001 W. 62nd St. This mural depicts much of Merriam’s history, including Merriam Park, David Gee Campbell, Quaker Mission, American Indians, a covered wagon and trolley car, the first permanent school building, and many other Merriam homes and businesses from the 1860s to the 1930s.

Planting the Seeds

Merriam Marketplace | 5740 Merriam Drive Created by Christopher Weed, this stunning sculpture was inspired by nature. Each sphere’s brilliant mirror finish with organic variations suggests a large, sprouting seed. The piece transforms the viewer to another realm – muting outside distractions and providing an opportunity to reflect, if only for a moment.

Downtown Merriam Mural Merriam Community Center | 6040 Slater St.

This mural by Merriam artist Michael Young depicts downtown Merriam circa 1940. The stylized image was painted from a photo taken by Dr. Fawks, who had family ties to Merriam for over 50 years.

Bask

Merriam Community Center | 6040 Slater St. Using the sun and pools as inspiration, artist Blessing Hancock created this series as it relates to the surrounding environment and community activities. The sculptures incorporate words collected from Merriam residents. Visitors are invited to touch and sit on the art pieces. At night, the sculptures come alive with color-changing lighting.

Tim Murphy Art Gallery Merriam Community Center | 6040 Slater St.

The Tim Murphy Art Gallery features monthly exhibits by local and regional artists. All exhibits are free to view and many artists sell their pieces on display. exploremerriam.com | 23

PERFECT PLACES

to

Picnic

Who doesn’t love a picnic? With wide open spaces, the sun shining down and the sounds of nature all around, Merriam has nine beautifully appointed parks and a four-mile paved trail just waiting for you to pitch a blanket and break out the picnic basket. So grab the essentials, then head outside to dine alfresco.

ANTIOCH PARK

WATERFALL PARK

While there are TONS of options on where to settle in for your picnic, we recommend the grassy area just south of shelter two overlooking the lake, walking trail, stepping stones, and fountain. You can choose from a sunny patch or a shaded spot – both are plentiful all over this beloved county park.

Hop on the trail at Waterfall Park to find a beautiful and serene cascading waterfall – an ideal location for an afternoon of picnicking and enjoying the great outdoors. While you’re there, check out the playful art installation called “Hmmm…”

Picnic Essentials

Fill your picnic basket with goodies from area merchants, makers, artisans, and bakers. Here’s our picks to make the perfect picnic plate from regional suppliers.

TASTEFUL OLIVE

STRAWBERRY HILL POVITICA

GOURMET POPCORN

For a great selection of nearby oils, vinegars, and other pantry staples, visit Tasteful Olive in downtown Overland Park. The feta stuffed olives are perfect for a picnic pairing.

Life is short, so start with dessert. Pick up a loaf of the delicious, handmade Povitica made right here in Merriam. Over a dozen flavors are offered daily for your choosing.

Popcorn is where it’s at, and the best place to grab some in Kansas City is Velvet Creme Popcorn Company at 4710 Belinder Road in Westwood, Kansas. They have lots of flavors to choose from and even offer other goodies, including candy, nuts, and snack mixes.

Bugger off bugs! No one likes a pesky picnic outing. Be sure

to pelt the pests with your own homemade insect repellent. Here’s an easy DIY recipe

using natural essential oils from Merriam’s Parks & Rec instructor Blakely Page.

Sign up for an essential oils class with Blakely at Merriam.org/parks.

2 oz spray bottle 5 drops Cedarwood 5 drops Eucalyptus 5 drops Geranium 10 drops Lemongrass 10 drops Peppermint 2 Tbsp Witch Hazel Top off with distilled water Safe for all ages – avoid spraying near eyes.

Parks & TRAILS

MERRIAM MARKETPLACE Picnic among the art at Merriam Marketplace. Position your picnic station between three shiny, silver spheres called “Planting the Seeds.” Not only can you picnic on the grounds, but you can also grab a few reflective selfies, too. When you’re finished noshing, hop on the trail for a quick nature walk – pick up the path just over the bridge behind the marketplace.

CHEESE

DELI GOODS

We like Geo’s Cheese between Holmes and Wornall on Gregory Boulevard. They carry a wide range of aged cheddars, a large variety of naturally smoked gouda, swiss, cherrywood smoked havarti, and other unique smoked cheeses.

No picnic is complete without a good sampling of deli meats. Head to the River Market District in Kansas City to pick up a delicious assortment of salami, pepperoni, prosciutto or cheeses, olives, desserts, or drinks – all authentically Italian!
