Morgan Hampton he discovery of the 215 children buried at the forREPORTER@ mer Kamloops Indian MERRITTHERALD. Residential School has sent COM the province and the nation reeling, with people wondering how they can possibly help. Mike Otto, a professional truck driver from Kelowna came up with an idea that would help blue collar workers show support for the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc people, on whose land the former school now stands. A mutual friend then passed Otto’s contact information along to Merrittonian Jim Beckett, who liked the idea immediately and wanted to gather together truck drivers from the Nicola Valley to take part. “The response that we’ve received, I’m so blown away, it’s phenomenal,” said Beckett. “It’s crazy what we’ve gotten from companies locally
and around BC. A lot of companies are sending multiple trucks and wanting to show their support as well. We definitely thank the trucking industry for all of this.” Nearly 30 trucks and 20 passenger vehicles gathered at the truck stop in Merritt bright and early the morning of Saturday, June 5. There, they were joined by supporters including drummers and dancers, many wearing the orange shirt that is a symbol of Residential School victims and survivors. Beckett hopes that the event will serve as a reminder to people of what Indigenous people across Canada have suffered through several generations of abuse and cultural annihilation in the Residential School system. “I’m hoping that it brings more awareness,” said Beckett. “I know First Nations have tried to be heard for years, and it’s been falling on deaf ears, per se. It’s time to be heard, it’s time for Canada to get some answers to First Nations and some justice. It makes a guy sick to his stomach to even See ‘CONVOY’ Page 8 think of what these families

A 46-year old Fort St. John man has been charged with the attempted murder of five RCMP officers after a shootout in Merritt on June 6. Kamloops Provincial Court Records show that Gerald Hartley Cooper appeared in court on Wed. June 9 to face the charges in a bail hearing. All five of the officers involved are members of the Merritt detachment. Also attached to the five charges of attempted murder is one count of failing to stop while being pursued by police. It was first around 3:50p.m. on the afternoon of June 6 that Merritt RCMP attempted to stop a white Ford F350 truck with a flatbed trailer, that had been recently linked to a local stolen vehicle file. Upon the attempted traffic stop, the vehicle immediately fled the scene, prompting the responding officer to call dispatch. Just under two hours later, the vehicle was once again spotted about five kilometres from Merritt on Highway 5A without
the trailer. A spike belt was deployed to stop the vehicle, which was initially successful, though the vehicle once again began moving down the highway before coming to a stop on Highway 8 near Snake Road and Highway 97C. Throughout the chase and the stop, gunfire was exchanged between police and the suspect vehicle. It eventually became known that there were two occupants of the suspect vehicle, one adult male and one child, believed to be the suspect’s 11-year old son. Both were transported to hospital with unknown injuries. Initially, Merritt RCMP along with the Southeast District General Investigation Services conducted a concurrent investigation into the vehicle stop. The area was secured until the arrival of the the Independent Investigations Office of BC, who took over the scene. IIO BC is now investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the two injuries. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.

RAIN CAUSES GOLF COURSE TO FLOOD Rain squalls in the mountains surrounding the Nicola Valley resulted in flash flooding in several areas. Washed out culverts and bridges hampered logging activities, and the most recent report was received from Quilchena Golf Course, where four fairways went underwater Monday afternoon. However, since the highway is higher than the golf course and, along with the bridge, there are several culverts taking the water into Nicola Lake, there is little other damage.
LETTERS POLICY
N’Kwala School “The Intermediate class at N’Kwala School created this piece to honour the 215 children, that were discovered in a mass grave at Kamloops Residential School. We started with 215 orange hand prints... we were influenced by the red handprints that acknowledge the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (#MMIWG). We chose a sacred medicine wheel to symbolize healing in all four directions. We took an existing quote and rewrote it to convey our message. ‘They tried to bury us; they didn’t know we were seeds that would awaken the world.’ We all had family who attended Kamloops Indian Residential School.”

Leaving the truck stop to begin their journey up the Coquihalla to Kamloops, the convoy was ushered on their way with drumming and singing. Once in Kamloops, RCMP were on hand to provide traffic control as the convoy from Merritt joined with two others from Kelowna and Williams Lake. Only a few selected trucks were permitted to turn into the KIRS grounds where they were greeted by an emotional crowd and members of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc. “By the time we hit the Residential School we had well over 300 trucks in the convoy,” said Beckett. “I am not sure on the exact amount as I have heard many different totals, from 275 trucks to over 450 but safe to say well over 300 semi-trucks partook on Saturday. The convoy reached for miles.” Beckett reports that people from as far away as Australia and Norway heard about the event and followed along on social media. Due to the success and the awareness that has come from the show of solidarity, there are already plans in the works to make it an annual event.

Career in navy a family affair for Pooleys having formerly been a technician like myself. For me, I grew up knowing that the Nicola Valley was a fairly small place, and I felt I needed to explore the world a bit. My first major posting was to St. John’s, Newfoundland for school. That was definitely a culture shock, I was very lucky to have my brother as a roommate there.” Courtnay and Hayden both graduated from the Marine Institute, a campus of Memorial University dedicated to maritime trades schooling, with ElectroMechanical Engineering Technician Diplomas in 2013. At that time, Courtnay was posted to the HMCS Calgary as a Junior Weapons Engineering Technician. “I did my apprenticeship under those that I still believe are the best technicians in the Canadian Navy,” said Pooley. “I worked and sailed on the Calgary until the end of 2016. My brother and I had both applied for our commissions, the legal document designating you as an Officer in the military. We were very fortunate to get selected in the same year and on our first year applying, which made us both very happy.” Both Courtnay and Hayden then changed from Weapons Engineering Technicians to Naval Warfare Officers, after which they were both expected to pursue a degree. Applying for the University Training Plan for Non-Commissioned Members, Pooley attended UVic. “I chose to go to the University of Victoria and study Economics,” explained Pooley. “I grew up having long conversations with my father about global affairs and I thought economics would round out my education very well for me to keep up to
him. I graduated in 2019 and began the Naval Warfare Officer Phase 3 course shortly after. This course teaches the core skills required of a mariner and bridge watchkeeper. After finishing that, I did what was a very challenging Naval Warfare Officer Phase 4 course. This course takes those universal mariner skills and adds the complexity of warfare to them.” Pooley’s personal life was also complex at this time, as the world was suddenly thrown into the COVID-19 pandemic, and he and his wife welcomed a baby girl to their family. “Training was essentially paused for six months, and my daughter was born two days before I was scheduled to proceed to sea for navigation assessments,” said Pooley. “The Navy and the Venture Division (the officer training school) were extremely understanding and allowed me to take a month off without any penalty to my training. I completed my course with a different set of students than I started with, but I did not have to do the entire phase over. This cannot always happen this way and I still get quite emotional thinking about how much consideration I was granted during this time.” After completing his Phase 4 training, Pooley was once again posted to the HMCS Calgary, this time as an officer. “Like most ships, a warship is commanded by its Captain,” explained Pooley. “At sea, 24 hours a day, a warship must be able to conduct operations ranging from search and rescue to drug interdiction, to exercises with foreign navies. The captain is ultimately responsible for the direction,

coordination, and control of all of these things, this is called Command. They must get the ship from point A to Point B safely, effectively, and while maintaining the wellbeing of the crew and the ship. It is a quite a lot to ask of one person.” Because the Captain of a ship cannot be everywhere at once, or perform all of their tasks singlehandedly, he relies on others, such as Pooley, to delegate some of these responsibilities. Pooley is currently working towards being a certified Officer of the Watch. “It is my job to move the ship to where the mission dictates, do so safely and effectively, provide an immediate response to any emergencies that occur, and take responsibility for the safety of the entire crew on board while doing so,” said Pooley. “This is called Charge. The Captain exercises Command and delegates Charge to the Officer of the Watch. Charge is a legal status placed on the Officer of the Watch, which gives them command of everyone on the ship except for the Captain and the Executive Officer, who is the second in command, for the duration of their watch, until the watch is taken by another Officer of the Watch. At sea there is always an Officer of the Watch on the bridge, looking out the window and considering all of these requirements, and issuing orders to complete them.” Pooley is currently under training to hold Charge, working under a qualified watchkeeper while on the bridge. When it is determined that Pooley is a competent and effective watchkeeper, he will be issued a Bridge Watchkeeping Ticket. “Once I achieve this, I will go ashore and stand before a board of very senior Officers who will evaluate all of my knowledge gathered See ‘NAVAL’ Page 12 from my time at sea,” Pooley

Fire prohibitions start June 11 Jake Courtepatte NEWSROOM@ MERRITTHERALD. COM Effective at noon on Fri. June 11, a ban on several categories of open fires will be in effect until midOctober. The Kamloops Fire Centre, which includes the Merritt area, is enacting the prohibition to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect the safety of the public. The ban will include Category 2 and Category 3 fires. A Category 2 fire includes any open fire more than 0.5-metres high by 0.5-metres wide, and smaller than two-metres high by threemetres wide. It also includes the banning of burning stubble or grass. Category 3 fires
are any fires larger than two-metres high by threemetres wide. Also banned are fireworks, sky lanterns, and burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description, except when used for a campfire as defined by the Wildfire Regulation. These new regulations in effect allow only campfires smaller than 0.5-metres high by 0.5-metres wide, protected by a fire guard, and with ready access to at least eight litres of water or a shovel. These prohibitions apply to all public and private land within the Kamloops Fire Centre jurisdiction, unless specified otherwise in an enactment (e.g. in a local government bylaw). Before lighting any fire, people
should check with local government authorities to see if any other burning restrictions are in effect. Anyone found in contravention of these open fire bans are privy to a fine of up to
$1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/ or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or
contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. The prohibitions do not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane, or briquettes.

SPORTS TRAIL TREKS: Godey Creek Trail Have a sports story tip? Tell us about it by calling 250-378-4241 or emailing newsroom@merrittherald.com.
Darch Oborne CONTRIBUTOR
Godey Creek Trail in Merritt is shown in this photo from AllTrails.
Godey Creek starts on Douglas Lake lands near 97C and flows (rages at times) west down the canyon just south of the Info Centre, under Hwy. 5, and then disappears into the ground mysteriously. This trail is especially nice on a very hot summer day - have a dip in the creek! The best hole is right by the ramp. It is a popular and quite strenuous hiking and biking trail, unsuitable for horses due to ramps and
bridges. It can be done as an out-and-back (ONB) or made into a very fine round trip. For a round trip, start at the Info Centre and follow signage for TMI and Godey up to ‘Lone Pine’, a conspicuous old pine that is an area landmark - then proceed SE down into the creek valley, keeping right and always going downstream. The creek is very swift in freshet, so keep pets and kids secured and safe. Continue down the creek until you hear Hwy. 5, then go right over the last bridge, and fol-
low the trail back to the Info Centre via Godey Traverse. As an ONB, follow the path at the SW corner of the Info Centre and proceed on Godey Traverse - turn around when you get to the top, or anywhere you wish. Along the trail you will notice some very fine old growth, an old miner’s cabin, and lovely pools in the creek. It is two miles one way, strenuous at times - use caution on creek crossings and on ramps. Takes 1.5 hrs to hike one way.

MERRITT HERALD THURSDAY, April 1 2021 •
THIS WEEK
Jake Courtepatte NEWSROOM@MERRITTHERALD.COM The Merritt Centennials have found their new bench boss. Dave Chyzowski, the second overall pick in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft for the New York Islanders, has signed a two-year deal with the junior A team, with a third-year option in the role of head coach and general manager. Director of Hockey Operations John Stuart said that the Cents’ executive team took over forty applications for the position. “As a committee, we took our time and due diligence on what we wanted in selecting a head coach,” said Stuart, who said that they were “absolutely thrilled” in bringing Chyzowski on board. “His knowledge and experiences in hockey, his knowledge of how to deal with teenage boys on pursuing their dream is something we truly value as an organization. Dave has great connections in the hockey world, along with Dave’s captaining of the Team Canada World Junior team to a gold medal in 1990 and his 18-year professional career. The relationships he has built within hockey will truly help our organization and players to the next level. It is safe to say hockey is firmly in the Chyzowski DNA.” Chyzowski kicked off his playing career in the late 1980s with the Kamloops Blazers in the WHL, amassing almost two points per game in his final season en route to his high status on NHL teams’ draft boards. His NHL career spanned six seasons between the Islanders and the Chicago Blackhawks, before stops in the professional leagues of Germany and Austria, eventually retiring from playing in 2007. Recent follows of the Blazers may recognize the name Chyzowski from Dave’s son, 24-year old Nick, who spent three seasons as assistant captain and then captain of the Blazers between 2015-2018. Ryan Chyzowski, three years younger than his brother Nick, spent last season as the captain of the Medicine Hat Tigers, also of the WHL. The Cents’ newest head coach also recently held onto ties with the WHL, serving as the assistant coach of the Vancouver Giants in the 2019-20 season. He now moves into his first head coaching position in the BCHL. Chyzowski said that it was the allure of the small town market that really attracted him to the Merritt Centennials. “I love small towns, I believe teams in small towns are closer than teams in other towns. One of the biggest things hockey players go through is that everyone has ups and downs. I’ve gone through everything these players are going through. It’s easy to forget that these are teenagers when they have their helmets on and are crashing around the ice. I want to help them grow as individuals and hockey players. I’m excited to be a part of the team, a part of the organization, and helping to grow both to their full potential.”

BUSINESS FEATURE
Do you want to nominate a business? Tell us about it by calling 250-378-4241 or emailing reporter@merrittherald.com.
Valley Kitchen Valley Kitchen is Merritt’s newest eatery, a small-scale restaurant with big flavour operating out of the concession in Central Park, at 2975 Voght St. The new venture is a joint collaboration between friends with a passion for good food and good company. “Valley Kitchen is four friends that have come together to bring their extensive experience and expertise in the restaurant industry to Merritt,” explained founder and co-owner, Katerina Reljic. The goal of Valley Kitchen is to provide accessible, high-quality food and coffee and tea-based beverages to both residents of Merritt and the many visitors who travel through the community each year. Customers can choose between deluxe hamburgers on a brioche bun,
spiced maple drizzled chicken bites, double cooked fries, poutine with gourmet slow roasted pork topped with scallions, and a mixed greens salad featuring apple, pear and house made honey dill dressing, all created with quality ingredients and a strong attention to detail. Kids have a menu of their own, including cheeseburgers and chicken bites. Milano blend coffee is always hot and ready, with almond milk and oat milk available. “We want to provide patrons with ‘comfort’-based food using local and seasonal ingredients,” said Reljic. “Valley Kitchen will provide an elevated, casual, dining-in-the-park experience for all Merrittonians.” And indeed, Central Park is an ideal location for such an idea, providing a welcoming atmosphere with a
skate park, baseball diamonds, a multiuse sports box and a nearby mountain bike course. The three other owners are co-founder Nolan Prowal, Mark Angelo Arcega and Jorge Sora. “I’ve been working in the customer service field for around ten years,” said Reljic. “Coming from a background of chefs, hospitality professionals and restaurant owners it was infused in my genetic makeup and eventually I couldn’t stay away. I started working in catering, doing event setup, serving, and food prep.” Wanting to move into the more upscale side of the restaurant industry, Reljic began working at Diva at the Met, a boutique hotel and fine dining experience in Vancouver. “I worked there for several years, all while doing private catering on yachts on the side. I was then part of the opening
team of Hawksworth Group’s award-winning sister restaurant, Nightingale, where I was senior member of the team for five years.” Arcega was born in Canada but raised in the Philippines, moving back to Canada in 2017 and beginning his culinary career as a line cook at Cactus Club. “He was able to take a step forward and join the Nightingale team as a server assistant,” said Reljic. “Mark established himself as a reliable, responsible, hardworking and loyal employee. Wanting to gain serving experience Mark took a position at Preston’s restaurant in the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel. His knowledge and experience working at Nightingale helped him to exceed expectations in his new work environment. Mark is wanting to bring his extensive hospitality and restaurant experience, along with his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Admin to help our business succeed.” Sora, the chef behind Valley Kitchen’s tastiest new creations, was born and raised in Colombia, although he moved to Canada at a young age. He worked as a server assistant and then a
cook at Glowbal and Trattoria where he discovered his passion for the restaurant industry before joining the crew at Nightingale. “This is where his culinary skills were put to the test,” said Reljic. “Progressing from station to station, and climbing the ranks, Jorge was mentored by some of the world’s best chefs, cooking for upwards of 700 guests a day. Jorge not only excelled in quantity of service, he never sacrificed quality.” Jorge even pursued his career to Copenhagen to work for an establishment known as the number one restaurant in the world, Noma. “Coming back to Vancouver, Jorge wanted to work for the newest and hottest fine dining establishment in Vancouver, Published on Main, where he would be able to showcase all of the skills and lessons he had learned,” said Reljic. “Having worked in his culinary career for amazing chefs, he now wants to join forces with friends to bring his knowledge of good food to the people of Merritt.” Nolan is a born and raised Merrittonian who moved to Vancouver to begin his restaurant career at
the Banana Leaf, working as a Junior Manager, server and bartender. “This is where his love for cuisine and mixology grew and flourished,” said Reljic. “However, he decided to move on in search of a finer restaurant and found himself at Nightingale working as a server assistant, moving up in the ranks to serving team, and eventually moving to the bar team to advance his skill and gain more knowledge of the inner workings of running a bar.” Prowal and Reljic made the move to
Merritt in October 2020, looking for a fresh new start and to be closer to Prowal’s family. Wanting to start a business of their own, the pair reached out to their friends to get involved and Valley Kitchen was born. “We all met while working in the restaurant industry
in Vancouver, and all became great friends,” said Reljic, who welcomed the change of pace in moving to Merritt. “We love the small-town community...such a lovely and welcoming community, and we are so happy to be a part of it.”
