Colorful Kitchen

Inspiration T

he kitchen is the heart of many homes, and careful planning is a necessity when it comes to redesigning

this essential living space. Picking out cabinetry - and a color for those cabinets, in particular - can be a challenging process. Everything from the style of your cabinets to the amount of natural light your space receives are key factors to consider when choosing an updated hue. While white cabinets are an everlasting choice, and wood-stained cabinetry once held 70% of the market, painted cabinets now account for 70% of sales, signaling a significant shift among homeowners and their preferences. While there are virtually no limitations when it comes to the paint, stain and glaze options available to complement your overall kitchen design, the current stylings reflected in Wellborn Cabinet's annual color trends provides an opening to a range of impactful colors, such as grays, blues, blacks and wood tones, and a mixture of these ontrend hues.

A Gray for Every Mood While gray cabinets have been a popular design choice for several years, much like shades of white, no two grays are exactly alike. Cabinet colors live on a color spectrum that ranges from warm to neutral to dark; warm grays have yellow or brown undertones while cool grays have hushed hues of blue. Neutral gray, or Ash, is a true black and white mixture of colors. However, many homeowners are opting for warmer or cooler shades instead. For example, light gray cabinets can create a chic, modern motif for homeowners looking to liven up their space while avoiding completely white cabinetry. One of the latest gray trends is a warmer gray that can look almost beige, earning the nickname "greige." Shades of dark gray - whether painted or stained - are also options for making a luxurious, traditional statement that can span ever-changing color trends.

makes it difficult to notice anything. A few scattered pieces to create focal points is better.

At one time, this was a strict no-no, but it's become increasingly popular. There are several tricks to make it work, though. First, use patterns of various sizes. Use a large, medium, and small pattern to bring them together without conflict. Also, use patterns in odd numbers. For example, rather than 2 or 4 different patterns, use 3 or 5. Be sure to balance the patterns throughout the room rather than cramming them all in one area.

Avoid 'fast furniture.'

The era of throwing a room together with cheap, disposable furniture is over and for obvious reasons. Opt instead for quality pieces that will last and add value to a room. If the cost of new quality furniture isn't in your budget, watch Craigslist and estatesales.net for like-new quality pieces at a fraction of the cost.

Mix metallics.

People commonly use only gold or only silver tones in a room. But the two combined can be very attractive.

Add plenty of texture.

Modern and contemporary is the in-thing. But too much of it makes for a dull, sterile look. This problem is easy to solve by adding texture, which creates dimension and makes a room more interesting. Add tufted or fur pillows to a sofa. Also, add a few objects with a rough finish and a shag rug to a hardwood floor. Don't forget to bring in elements of nature with a couple of real plants or a stack of logs near the fireplace.

Avoid monochromatic color.

Rooms with monochromatic color schemes are out, whether the colors are pale, earthy, or bold. Choose a primary color, and then accent colors that are not in the same color family as the primary.

Mix tableware.

This is a great way to save money while adding interest to your table. One option is to choose one pattern for dinner plates, another for salad plates, and another for bowls that compliment each other. Alternatively, select several different place settings, each in different colors or patterns. These can be had for practically nothing at thrift stores, estate sales, or on clearance.

The right size art for your wall.

When choosing artwork, it should be proportional to the size of the wall. Large pieces go on large wall spaces, and small go in small areas. Also, hang art at the right height. An average height person's head should come to the center of the art piece.

Add height.

There are several ways to make a ceiling appear higher. First, choose a ceiling color that's light and at least a shade or two lighter than the walls. Use short furniture to make a room look taller. Finally, order extra long drapes so you can raise the curtain rod 5" to 7" above the window casing. ■

GET PRE-QUALIFIED FOR A MORTGAGE Being pre-qualified makes you a much more attractive buyer. The first step in getting pre-qualified is checking your credit score (see above). Next, crunch some numbers. You'll need to figure out your debt-to-income ratio (DTI) based on the anticipated mortgage monthly payment: How much (percentage) of your gross monthly income goes toward debt (student loans, credit cards, car payments, etc.)? Most mortgage lenders look for a DTI of 36% or lower. If your DTI is high, see if you can decrease your debt by paying some down and/or increase your income (perhaps with a part-time job).

"With so many more people working from home, people are re-evaluating their living spaces, including those who need to factor in homeschooling." Apply with a number of lenders - some will give you better rates than others. Before applying, ask what information and documents you (and your co-borrower, if there is one) will need. This will include proof of employment and income, plus previous tax returns. Also, be sure to apply to all the lenders within a span of two weeks. If your credit score is not up to par, improve it by:

• Reducing the percentage of revolving credit you're using by paying down some of your cards. Under 30% of the

5.

and twigs from your lawn. Next, “thatch,” or rake, your lawn with a leaf rake. This will remove any dead grass and promote new growth. Be sure to pay special attention to where your lawn meets the street, as this area tends to be full of cinders and rocks.

6.

maybe even shampoo the carpets if you’re feeling ambitious, but what about the outside of your house? That’s right, I’m talking about the dreaded outdoor spring clean-up. Fortunately, Logan Evans, President of Mountain Landscaping, LLC, offered his professional opinion, free of charge! To many of you (or am I the only one?), an outdoor clean-up may seem daunting. Logan broke things down into six basic steps to spruce things up outside of your home. As you check each item off your list, make sure you are working from top to bottom (i.e.gutters to grass); it will make your life much easier.

1.

Clean your gutters – Clear all debris from the gutters and

don’t forget to flush out the downspout using a garden hose. If this doesn’t work, you may need to use a plumber’s snake. Remember - be gentle.

2.

Prune those plants – First, check to see what time of year

your trees and shrubs prefer to be pruned. If you’re going to prune this spring, make sure you do so before any new growth appears. Popular spring bloomers, like azaleas and forsythia, form their buds early, so put those clippers away for now. Keep in mind, it’s just a trim; don’t go hacking away at your plants!

THE LOWDOWN ON LAWNS • Sharpen mower blades! Dull mower blades won’t give you a clean cut and are harmful to your grass. • Less is more! By cutting only the top third of your grass, you reduce stress to grass blades, promote healthier roots, and limit weed growth. But don’t let your grass get too long – mow before any weeds have the opportunity to scatter their seeds. • Hydrate! When it comes to watering your lawn, quality saturations are key. Give your lawn a good soaking once a week, rather than a quick spray every day. If you have sandy soil, your lawn may require a drink more often than a claybased soil, which will retain water. And remember, always water in the early morning or after the sun goes down to avoid burning your grass. ■ *Mountain Landscaping, LLC is a design, installation, and maintenance landscape contractor with offices in Cresco and Pocono Pines. Tips for a

successful

Home Renovation

Thinking of remodeling your home? From safety and security to product and contractor selection, there are many factors to consider. Follow these eight remodeling tips to help minimize hassles during a renovation:

Create a budget. Create a project budget and set a spending limit. Whether you plan to utilize savings, home equity loan, line of credit or free up funds through refinancing, now is the time to identify how you will finance the project, and how much you want to spend.

24 |

Prepare the house. Before work starts, clear all spaces where professionals will be working, as well as walkways they will use to access these areas. Remove valuables and breakables to avoid damage and cover furniture in areas where paint or dust could harm upholstery. Keep other considerations in mind. For example, if you’re renovating the kitchen, you may need to create a temporary food prep area.

Work with reputable professionals. When selecting a contractor, be sure they have references, certification and an understanding of the project. For example, when tackling window and door projects, Andersen Windows, Inc.

recommends hiring an Andersen Certified Contractor to do the job. These contractors receive product training, installation resources, offer an exclusive 2-year limited installation warranty, and their expertise and experience in an extensive range of residential projects means they’re able to capture your vision for your home and work with you to provide the right products. Bottom line: working with reputable professionals makes all the difference in the quality of the work and the materials used to complete the project.

Schedule wisely. Choose a timeframe for your home renovation that best fits your busy schedule. Keep in mind that unforeseen circumstances can sometimes cause delays. Build this into the timeline so you’re not taken by surprise.

Address safety. Talk to your contractor about what COVID-19 measures they practice to help keep customers and employees safe. Find out whether they’re following CDC guidelines for businesses, including always wearing a mask, social distancing whenever possible and frequent hand washing. Also, ask if they offer virtual consultations that allow you to start the process contact-free.

Add or update your security system. With professionals frequently coming in and out of your home, a

with your home renovation team essential. Be sure to share your vision and to ask questions as they arise. At the same time, expect the professionals working with you to communicate regularly and address all your concerns.

Get a return on your investment. Prioritize projects that will potentially raise the resale value of your home. According to FortuneBuilders, the top 10 greatest returns on investment for home renovations include bathroom and kitchen remodels, landscaping, replacing entry doors

leads for home improvement professionals this past summer. One project that can make an impact on the look and value of your home is refinishing your hardwood floors. It may seem like a big project to tackle, but refinishing can not only improve the look and value of your home but will extend the lifespan of your floors. Here are a few tips to get the job done right:

1. CHOOSE CAREFULLY Do your research. Since floors comprise one of the largest surfaces in your home, you want them to look great and wear well for years to come. Consider the room's overall aesthetic such as color palette and light. A darker space could benefit from lighter colored

2. USE A PROFESSIONAL While you may be handy around the house, this is one area where you don't want to make costly mistakes. Hiring a qualified professional flooring craftsman will save time and could also save you money. DIY floor refinishing mistakes are difficult to repair and may mean replacing the flooring surface all together. Consult an expert such as a Bona Certified Craftsman to ensure your floors are refinished with the best products and tools to safeguard the health of your home.

3. THINK ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY When it comes to a hardwood floor finish, the best choice for keeping your home free of toxins is a water-based or waterborne finish.

regions. Because of its toxic nature, homeowners, pets, food, houseplants and even fish tanks must be removed from the home during the refinishing process to keep them safe. Even after the homeowner's return, this floor finish will continue to release toxins into the home. Oil-based polyurethane floor finish also emits a high level of VOCs creating an intense smell. Additionally, it can have an extended drying time (making your flooring project take longer) and over time, the color can turn yellow compromising the original floor color you selected. By contrast, waterborne finishes are durable, sustainable and safe enough for homeowners, pets, plants and food to remain in the home during the entire refinishing process. A waterborne finish may take a few hours more to dry than acid cure finish, but it will be ready to walk on hours before an oil-based polyurethane finish. The environmental and health benefits are also well worth it. A high-durability waterborne finish like Bona Traffic HD has low VOCs and is Greenguard

If you have other rooms on the same level that aren't hardwood, see if there is hardwood under those other surfaces that could be refinished to create a unified look, or consider if installing hardwood floors would be worth the investment.

However, not all outdoor products are able to withstand all weather conditions. For example, some products are marketed for indoor and outdoor use, but they're not constructed to withstand extreme temperatures all year. Do your research to ensure your products are appropriate for your environment. Remodelers should also be mindful of placement of the speaker systems, so as not to disturb the neighbors and to maximize enjoyment for the homeowner.

Functional Features Entertainment aside, there are some options for upgrading your backyard space that are as practical as they are enjoyable. For example, adding paved walkways lends both aesthetic appeal and a clear path for traveling from one section of the yard to the next. This is especially advantageous for high-traffic areas, where frequent trips might otherwise damage the lawn. The material can either complement or match the surface of a finished patio space, particularly if you choose an option like stone or pavers.

NATURE-INSPIRED PAINT TRENDS FOR A CALMING HOME

32 |

Pocono Home

Each of these three collections, assembled by the experts at Ace Hardware, can help conjure a sense of calm and offer inspiration so you can thoughtfully incorporate color into your home.

MINDFUL LIVING If you want to bring new layers of wellness to your life, the calming neutrals and soft greens that make up this refreshing and cleansing palette may be just what you're seeking. The muted tone of Fair Isle is a soft neutral that pairs well with a wide range of colors, such as the inviting Blue Spruce green that resembles a richly treed mountainside. Additionally, Swiss Coffee and Natural White offer neutral options that lend a surprising sense of coziness while Smokey Taupe and Playas de Cancun provide alternatives to bring bolder, but still soothing, color to your space.

UNDERSTATED IMPACT If minimalism and clean lines reflect your desire to simplify your surroundings, you'll likely be drawn to a "less is more" approach to design. This uncluttered sensibility allows you to focus on key elements of a room that are impactful yet edited. To achieve this look, build your palette around slatelike hues of gray and blue, such as Gothic Iron or a cooler take on slate with Magic Fountain. Options like Silent White and Abstract Gray lend neutral warmth while an earthy burgundy like Red Tulip or the deep, not-quite-black tones of Midnight Stroll are ideal for creating a focal point.

CREATIVE ESCAPE This palette of mid-tone colors with artistic qualities may be best suited for someone who embraces traditional crafting techniques and delights in working with his or her hands. Striking slate blue Midnight Oil is reminiscent of waves crashing in the dark of night while Subtle Gray offers a softer take on the slate-like tones. As the name suggests, When it comes to home design, color can change everything. From understated, clean hues and calming neutrals to soft greens and mid-tone colors with artistic qualities, a whole new style is just brush strokes away. With the right color palette, you can transform your space to highlight contemporary trends while creating your desired ambiance. These curated Clark+Kensington color palettes, showcasing on-trend looks for 2021, are heavily inspired by nature and natural materials like raw cotton, linen, wood tones and soft, peaceful greens. The colors invite the best of the outdoors inside so you can design a personal

Fiddlehead Fern brings lush vegetation to mind while Act Naturally and Caramel Apple deliver pops of color consistent with streaks of an orange-kissed sunset. The most subtle of this collection, Beach Cottage, features a slightly peach-topinkish tint that gives unique character to a neutral selection. Any color in these palettes can be selected and ordered from the comfort of your home online using in-store pickup, curbside pickup or delivery from your local store. WAYS TO DESIGN WITH

C

reating a welcoming and relaxing space may be easier than you expect when you give natural materials a leading

role in your design. Elements like natural stone, wood, fiber, metals and even plant life can allow you to express a sense of unique personal style that is broadly appealing. Most inviting rooms share one quality: ample natural light, which creates a subtly vibrant and energetic ambiance. Other aspects of an enticing design may be less obvious to the casual observer. Special touches like custom craftsmanship lend a special aesthetic to furnishings and decor, and bring authenticity to your home. Similarly, items that are made in America using an artisanal approach can elevate the character of a room when compared to things that are mass manufactured. For example, choose a single piece of artwork from a talented artist rather than multiple pieces of mass-produced art from a retailer.

natural fiber textiles

Careful attention

to detail is important for a cohesive design, so be sure to keep thinking natural when selecting textiles. Linen and rough cotton fabrics bring distinctive textures that maintain an organic vibe. Natural textiles can also be quite durable, making them practical selections for often-used spaces. Elements to consider include window treatments, fabric components of any furnishings and accents like pillows or throws. Jute or wool rugs and textile artwork may also work well with this motif.

plant life

Vegetation is a central element to

landscape design, so when your goal is to create an inviting indoor space with a connection to nature and the outdoors, it makes sense to incorporate plants as part of your design. Options vary greatly, so it may take some work to narrow your selections. If the rest of your space reflects a specific region, choose plants native to that area. You'll also want to

Pforerfect planting

DIY Hypertufa Pot Ross & Ross Nursery has been family owned and operated since 1932. No, that’s not a typo - 89 years! As their business has grown over the years, so has their reputation as a local favorite. Maybe it’s because of their garden center that’s filled with everything from flowers to fertilizers. Or, maybe it’s their superior knowledge of landscape design. Whatever the reason, this local landmark has continued to evolve - offering customers even more goods and services. At Ross & Ross, you can find a variety of ongoing classes. From wreath making to fairy

gardens, the schedule is always changing. I was lucky enough to join in on a Hypertufa Workshop where I had the chance to make a Hypertufa pot of my own. Hypertufa pots come in all shapes and sizes. This workshop gave me the skills I need to make my own batch of pots. A Hypertufa pot is a textured, rustic planter that closely resembles stone. Made from cement, perlite, sand, peat and water, these pots are almost unbreakable when made correctly. Your finished products can be used indoors or outdoors and can hold any kind of plant – personally, I think succulents look the best.

from your home • Various containers (cardboard boxes, plastic containers, etc.) • Plastic bags • Water • Gloves • Bucket or wheelbarrow

for mixing • Trough

1. Sift through your peat to remove any sticks or lumps then mix equal parts of peat and perlite.

2. Next, add ½ part sand to the mix and blend together until homogenous. 3. Add 1 ¼ parts Portland cement to the mixture and again, blend together. 4. Next, you will begin to add water. You will need up to 1 part water but begin with half of that to start. The mixture should be wet enough to form a ball, so slowly mix in more water as needed.

5. Take the container you selected as your mold and line with a plastic bag. 6. Shovel the mixture into the container and begin working to form the pot. The sides and bottom of my pot were roughly 1-inch thick.

7. If desired, add a drainage hole to the bottom of your pot. 8. After you have finished shaping your pot, cover it up entirely with a plastic bag.

9. 24 to 48 hours later, unwrap the pot, remove the mold and smooth or distress the sides and corners. Next, wet the pot and put back into the plastic bag.

10. Store the pot for 1 to 2 weeks in an area above 60 degrees and keep moist. 11. To prepare the pot for planting, leach the cement hydration products (lime) from the Hypertufa by allowing the rain to wash it or by hosing it down 10-20 times over multiple days.
