Upgrade Your Air Conditioner If your home's climate control is lacking, it may be time to invest in a new HVAC system - particularly if your current one is more than 15 years old. If closing all your blinds or covering every window isn't an option or makes you feel claustrophobic, focus on any south- or west-facing rooms in your home, as these are typically the trickiest to keep cool during the warmest hours of the day - usually from late morning until early evening. Exterior window shades and awnings can also be useful options if you're looking to reduce the amount of heat that enters your home, but still want to take advantage of the natural light.
Change Your Light Bulbs Since warmer weather also equates to more sunshine, turning off the incandescent lights in

your house when possible can cut down on extra heat and save on your energy bill. Though the soft yellow glow of incandescent light bulbs can create a nice ambiance, it also gives off a lot of heat. Swapping out those old light bulbs for more efficient, LED bulbs can cut down on the amount of heat your light fixtures emit. If you can't replace them, minimizing their usage - particularly when having a light on in a room is unnecessary - can make a difference.
Strategically Plant Trees & Shrubs Planting trees or shrubs near sunlight-facing windows can make a big difference when it comes to the temperature inside your home by shielding the sun's rays. While planting trees strategically around your home is more of a long-term plan, the benefits can also last for many years to come in terms of shade, added curb appeal and overall betterment of the earth. Start by focusing on west-facing walls, where the sun is typically the strongest. Choosing trees native to your area can decrease maintenance, and those that bloom in spring and drop leaves in the fall offer year-round benefits by providing both shade and heat in accordance with the season. and other tall shrubs are options for quicker results, but they may also require more long-term maintenance.
Reduce Appliance Usage To help minimize running appliances and equipment that generate a lot of heat, like stoves and ovens, choose to cook outdoors or opt for quicker meals you can prepare using the microwave, which doesn't heat the house to the same extent. While grilling and eating outside more frequently may require an awning or gazebo to stay cooler, it can beat the alternative of warming up your oven, and ultimately your home, for an extended period of time. Reducing your usage of other heat-producing appliances such as computers, dishwashers, clothes dryers, curling irons and hair dryers can also help keep interior temperatures comfortable and energy use low. Try using these appliances earlier in the day to minimize the extra load placed on your air conditioner. Keeping cool during warm weather months doesn't have to be complicated. Take advantage of these measures to reduce your home's heat load and energy bill. One quick social media visit and it’s easy to see that flipping furniture can be as simple as applying a fresh coat of paint. While a fresh coat of paint may update the look of whatever piece of furniture you’re working on, when it comes to restoring antiques or repairing your favorites, it’s best to hire a professional. Jack Horvath, owner of Vintage Repurposed, has spent most of his life refinishing, repairing and repurposing used furniture. After sharpening his skills and working with interior designers, Jack earned his reputation for superior craftsmanship and a penchant for mid-century furniture. What started as a hobby fostered by a love for fine furniture, naturally progressed. Jack started by refinishing and repairing whatever caught his eye and then selling his work in a local antique consignment mall. As his customer base grew, so did the the need for a bigger workshop. After finding a facility that allowed for a larger workshop and coincidentally had a space for a showroom, Vintage Repurposed was born. At Vintage Repurposed you can find furniture from any period in time. While store inventory changes frequently, you’ll often find a larger selection of mid-century furniture as it is Jack’s specialty. The mid-century period (50’s, 60’s and 70’s) is characterized by well-made sleek furniture

that has stood the test of time. This furniture refinishes beautifully and still presents well after 60-70 years. You can even find repaired pieces originally crafted by Jack’s design icons like Adrian Pearsall, Kipp Stewart, Milo Baughman and others. Jack’s goal with each piece of furniture is to restore the beauty and utility of the furniture. While some may think a fresh coat of paint is all you need to restore furniture, Jack carefully considers the age and unique needs of each piece. After assessing the needs of a piece, Jack starts his repairs from the bottom up. Sometimes the process means completely breaking the piece apart, re-gluing, stripping all previous finishes, repairing and then refinishing and upholstery. Jack’s extreme patience throughout the refinishing process only contributes to his exceptional reputation. If the repairs are necessary, no matter how small, it all gets done, in order to give the piece many more years of life and the customer many more years of enjoying it. You can follow Vintage Repurposed on Instagram and Facebook where Jack shares his work on a regular basis. New furniture pieces typically are posted the week before they hit the showroom floor. Vintage Repurposed also has a website with items for sale, but with the fast inventory turnover. social media is a great tool. In addition, Vintage Repurposed also purchases furniture and home decor. If you have mid-century pieces, or any other pieces, collecting dust, reach out to discuss the piece. ■

Infuse Living Spaces
with Color From experiences to surroundings, the past year has brought a renewed focus on feeding the soul. In an era of overstimulation and information overload, many are finding a new appreciation for living life minimally but with maximum experiences. That mentality is increasingly evident in all aspects of life, especially with home design and decor. After all, spending more time at home means more time to discover what truly evokes happiness. At the same time, as the focus on physical and mental wellness heightens, design experts see those trends reflected in a more considered approach to design inspired by color therapy, which makes it possible to create beautiful spaces filled with healing color. With an expertly coordinated color palette, like the Color Collections from HGTV Home by SherwinWilliams, colors work in perfect harmony in any combination. Thoughtful use of color is among the most effective design tools for reveal-worthy style in your home.
Appliances In the past, appliances were meant to blend into the decor to be less obvious, albeit essential, elements of a kitchen. A more contemporary approach: vibrant appliances that get noticed. You can find major appliances in a wide range of colors, but if you're not sure about going that big and bold, many smaller countertop appliances, such as stand mixers and toasters, come in a range of colorful options, too.

Countertops.
Tired of boring countertops? When using the SpreadStone kit from Daich Coatings, an elegant new finish requires only the ability to paint, roll and sand. Working well on existing laminate, cultured marble, formica and other solid surfaces, the result is a dynamic stone finish that provides shimmering mineral accents and color highlights found in natural mined rock. The three-step process includes applications of a stone base coat, decorative stone coat and stone clear top coat. Finished countertops resist heat, stains, abrasion, impact and household cleaners. Available in 10 colors, including Oyster and Volcanic Black, each kit includes application tools and required coatings to complete 30 to 40 square feet of space. Kits are available online at The Home Depot and at daichcoatings.com.
Decorative boards.
Add warmth to bars and kitchen islands, or an entire wall, by installing decorative wood boards. The ready-to-install S4S Decorative Boards from Ornamental Decorative Millwork provide a rich, clean appearance and are available in Ambrosia Maple, White Oak, Black Stained Aspen and Gray Stained Aspen profiles.

Floating shelves.
Add floating shelves to keep spices handy, hold favorite cookbooks, stack plates or display decorative accent pieces. Lightweight and easy-to-install in just minutes, those from Ornamental Decorative Millwork can be easily painted or stained to complement other design elements in the room.
Wood beams.
Add architectural style and warmth to your kitchen (or any other room) with lightweight Rustic Beams from Ornamental Decorative Millwork. Whether it’s adding straight beams, creating a center beam with cross beams, or crafting a coffered ceiling, home design creativity knows no bounds with this DIY project. Made of real wood, these pre-stained U-shaped beams and wrought iron metal accent brackets are available at Lowe’s and come with everything needed for installation.
Outdoor kitchen.
Building an outdoor kitchen is an amazing way to make better use of your backyard and enjoy fresh air as you cook and dine. Using VertiStone Roll-On Wall Texture, you can ensure the space is beautiful. Without prep work and in little time, you can use it to completely transform any drywall, block, masonry or concrete outdoor kitchen surface in such finishes as smooth polished marble, natural suede, parchment, dream lace and linen. Then, to protect the newly-coated surfaces, simply add Hi-Build Ultra Clear Coat, a tough coating that resists water, U/V rays, chemicals, impact and abrasion. Thanks to a variety of products making DIY easy, you can affordably give your kitchen that “wow factor” in an afternoon or weekend. ■ StatePoint

TIPS FOR A SAFER MORE ENJOYABLE
Summer @ the Pool As summer approaches, pools are great for play, exercise and therapy. However, it is critical that while enjoying ourselves, we take appropriate safety precautions. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 275 children nationwide under the age of 5 drown in swimming pools annually, and more than 4,100 children receive medical treatment for pool-related accidents, the majority of which occur in backyard pools. Luckily, building codes and standards can help. “Building codes are life savers and as the leading building codes and standards developer, we are accounting for every facet of the home, which includes specific provisions to make pools and spas safer,” says Dominic Sims, CEO of the International Code Council. Emphasizing the importance of water safety, the Code Council has dedicated a week (May 17-23) during its annual Building Safety Month to the topic. To ensure individuals are having safe pool fun, the Code Council shares the following tips:

are looking for the great outdoors and our proximity to major metropolitan areas is ideal. These two factors have brought an exorbitant number of buyers to the area in search of a vacation home with the goal of making money on the property as a short term rental. If you are looking to put your home on the market, make sure you are prepared for your next move. The sale could happen very quickly. Within days of listing your property with a Realtor, you could be under contract! You could have a buyer willing to pay cash, and it could go into a bidding war! If this is your second home or vacation home, this is the time to sell! If it is your primary home, you need to be ready to relocate. According to the mortgage data firm Black Knight, as of March 2021, approximately 2.6 million U.S. homeowners remain in an active forbearance plan. It's important they know their options for what happens next. Early in the pandemic, Fannie Mae, a leading provider of home loan and rental housing financing in the U.S., launched an online portal at KnowYourOptions.com with interactive resources to help homeowners and renters, including clear

For those who are still feeling the financial impact of COVID-19 or those newly impacted by the economic fallout, it's not too late to get help. "We encourage homeowners and renters facing financial hardship to visit KnowYourOptions.com to learn what options may be available, and to contact their mortgage servicer or landlord to make a plan," said Malloy Evans, senior vice president, Fannie Mae. "It's our top priority to help keep people in their homes."

According to Black Knight, more than 800,000 homeowners who opted for forbearance will reach the end of their 12-month plan this spring. Those who are still facing financial hardship may be eligible to extend for up to six additional months. Homeowners interested in seeking an extension should contact their mortgage servicer (the company they send their monthly payment to). Those homeowners who are ready to begin making their monthly mortgage payments again have access to a number of options such as:

» Reinstatement allows homeowners to pay any missed amounts all at once, if they are financially able to do so.
» A repayment plan enables homeowners to resume making their regular monthly mortgage payment, plus an additional portion of the missed amount each month, until the missed amount is paid off, if they are able to do so.

» Payment deferral might be a good option for those who are unable to reinstate or afford a repayment plan but can resume their monthly mortgage payments. This defers any missed payments to the end of the loan term when it is paid off. Interest is not charged on the deferred amounts. The deferred amounts are due earlier upon the sale or transfer of the property, refinance, or payoff of the loan.
» Loan modification is another option where the original loan terms - such as the interest rate or term of the loan - could be permanently changed to make a homeowner's monthly mortgage payment more manageable moving forward. A new, interactive virtual assistant at KnowYourOptions. com can provide homeowners with an informed recommendation for their financial situation, which they can discuss with their mortgage servicer. For example, you might add pet washing and grooming features, along with an oversized sink that doubles as a gardening and potting area. In a multi-use room, it’s also important to be conscious of details like lighting and cabinetry inserts that can help bring organization and order to the space. Puck lighting and LED strips illuminate select areas while dividers, sliding shelves and custom pull-out cabinets ensure your items are stored out of sight but within easy reach. Be color conscious. In a high-traffic space that sees a fair share of dirt and grime, color is an attractive way to cleverly disguise what lurks in between cleanings. REDUCING YOUR PLASTIC FOOTPRINT
at home
Plastic contributes to climate change and is a major pollutant, harming wildlife and people. With Earth Day around the corner, here are a few tips for reducing your plastic footprint at home that will also contribute to a healthier planet.
36 |
Pocono Home
START A GARDEN From cartons of berries and tomatoes to individually-wrapped cucumbers, it can be difficult to avoid plastic in the produce aisle of your supermarket. By growing your favorite fruits, vegetables and herbs at home, you may avoid some of this waste and reduce your carbon footprint at the same time, as foods found in the store are often shipped from distant places.
KEEP YOUR PRODUCE GREEN When you do have to grab a staple that’s not in your garden, bring some reusable produce bags with you. Check out this cute set from Food52’s shop: food52.com. Then, stick to the loose fruits and veggies not already wrapped in plastic.
GREEN YOUR HYDRATION In the pursuit of having a constant source of great-tasting, healthy water at home, you may be stocking your fridge with bottled water. However, bottled water contains microplastics and is a significant part of the global plastic waste problem. To stay hydrated healthfully and sustainably, use a water filter pitcher. One great option is the LifeStraw Home Glass Water Filter Pitcher, which protects against over 30 contaminants, including bacteria, parasites, microplastics, lead, mercury and chemicals, including PFAS and chlorine. To shop or learn more, visit LifeStraw.com, Target.com, or CrateandBarrel.com.
RETHINK GARBAGE COLLECTION Plastic garbage bags may seem necessary, but there are reusable alternatives available today that can help to drastically reduce your plastic waste. For example, Bagito makes durable, washable, water-resistant garbage can liners from 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastics. They are available in three sizes that are ideal for bathroom wastebaskets, kitchen-sized trash cans and outdoor yard debris bins. By doing your part to find sustainable alternatives to singleuse plastic, you can reduce your contribution to a global environmental crisis right at home. ■ StatePoint

Gardening enthusiasm is surging thanks to our increased time at home - whether on a small-space patio or in a larger backyard. In fact, people spent 42% more time gardening in 2020 than the year before, according to Axiom Marketing's 2021 Gardening Insight Survey, and it is estimated the pandemic contributed to creating nearly 20 million new "gardeners." Many experts agree the trend toward nurturing flowers, plants and vegetables will continue into 2021 and beyond. If you're looking to test your new green thumb or bring this year's garden to the next level, consider these top trends and simple ideas from the experts at Ball Horticultural Company: 40 |
