Why your kitchen needs a scullery The scullery is turning up more frequently in American homes. The British term describes a separate room off the kitchen where messy prep work and unattractive clean-up tasks like pot scrubbing can be done out of sight - a major asset in today's open-plan houses. "Scullery and butler's pantry are often used interchangeably," notes Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Information Center. "But a scullery is a true work zone with a full-size sink and ample counter and storage space, not just a staging area for serving meals or a place to keep china, silver, and linens. Here are some examples of hardwood being used to create sculleries that are both practical and attractive."

SHORTER DARKER DAYS ARE AHEAD
Make Your Home a Haven As more of life is centered around home, good design can help you augment and replace natural light, while creating a beautiful, productive, safe haven during the darker, shorter days of fall and winter. “As the home continues to serve as our collective sanctuary during the COVID pandemic, it’s critical to consider how lighting can keep a family thriving during this fall and winter season,” says Michael McCullough, director of PR at Progress Lighting. Long winter nights and colder temperatures mean more time inside working, learning and just plain living in our homes. “The stress of the COVID-19 crisis has emphasized the impact our environment plays on our wellbeing. There’s never been a more important time for interior design,” says Doris Pearlman, founder of Possibilities for Design of Denver. “Our goal is to create spaces that uplift and embrace, providing respite from daily pressures.”

a retreat. Individual switches allow for customized lighting for easy bedtime reading. Jayme and Nolan Fridley, of Fridley Homes in Oregon, who balance a busy custom home building business with their active family, are observing new trends. “The open-concept floor plan is not as charming when everyone’s working from home,” says Jayme Fridley. “Instead of a ‘great room,’ many families now think that having many areas designated for specific tasks is ‘great’.” Fridley’s strategies include:
• Create specific learning areas for each child. • Let kids customize spaces, keeping clutter minimized to avoid distractions.
• Encourage concentration with good (if possible natural) lighting. Design pros suggest homeowners incorporate light layering to maximize light throughout the day. Supplement daylight with overhead lighting from chandeliers, recessed and closeto-ceiling fixtures. Place task lighting such as pendants or desk lamps over work areas. Use accent lighting like wall sconces to add a soft glow as the day wanes. “Lighting should set the tone for productivity. For some, this might mean bright lighting and multiple sources. Others might prefer a moody vibe. Making it your own is what’s most important...oh, and a good backdrop for Zoom calls

Technology can help spaces pull double-duty. Lifestyle blogger, Lindsey Dalton says, “We put our chandelier on a dimmer so it can be bright while my husband’s working but we can turn it down during dinner to transition the room from workday to relaxing evening.” With smart light fixtures, you can change lighting tone, brightness and color with a device or your voice. Control products from iDevices work with the three most popular voice assistants: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri. Using the iDevices smart Dimmer Switch and Wall Switch, you can set lights on dynamic schedules and automations based on triggers like your local sunrise or presence at home. Delineating start and stop times to your day through lighting can help optimize productivity and boost your mood. Smart controls can also facilitate distance-learning. “With a voice assistant built inside the Instinct smart light switch, you have your own at-home teaching assistant, helping answer questions and assisting with exercises,” says Andrew Ragali, senior marketing manager for iDevices. “It also allows you to play music or audiobooks using voice commands to keep kids on task.” For more tips and to shop products, visit Progress Lighting. Your home environment impacts your family’s health and wellbeing. Well-lit, comfortable spaces can help your household thrive in the months ahead. StatePoint

often at a premium. The typical hinged door requires up to 14 square feet of floor space to swing open. A pocket door, conversely, slides into the wall, leaving the space in front of and on either side of the doorway open and available. Pocket doors are commonly installed at the entrances to bathrooms and can also be used to conceal linen closets and washers and dryers when the bathroom serves double duty as a laundry room. There's also a growing bathroom remodeling trend of enclosing the toilet alcove to create a toilet "room" within the bathroom. However, space restrictions seldom allow for the installation of a swinging door, so remodelers often install pocket doors. Pocket door frames also allow for items to be mounted on the pocket wall. For instance, when used with Johnson's 151558PL Pocket Wall Reinforcement Clip Set and 5/8-inch thick plywood, the 1500SC Pocket Door Frame with all-steel split studs can support wall-mounted fixtures such as towel bars, shelves, framed mirrors or artwork. The pocket door frame kit comes equipped with soft-close hardware that allows doors up to 200 pounds to be opened and closed by the touch of a fingertip for less risk of pinched fingers and

"We hear it from professionals and consumers alike: Today, families want an especially cocooning home environment,"
says Linda Jovanovich, of the American Hardwood Information Center. "Wood is an inherently warm and characterful material that engenders feelings of reliability and familiarity in us. But along with that triedand-true aspect, hardwood also offers a wide range of different looks and design possibilities, so there's always an element of uniqueness and personalization whenever it's used." The kitchen is often called "the heart of the home" - a gathering place that provides sustenance through food and the companionship of friends and family - making it an ideal space in which to put wood's authentic natural powers to work. Replacing tired old cabinets with stylish hardwood ones is a good starting point, as shown in the makeover of a 1920s Bungalow house kitchen where a classic American hardwood - quartersawn white oak - is used for all the new millwork and flooring. The floorboards are lightly white-washed to create the look of bare wood; the base cabinets, supplied by Plain & Fancy Custom Cabinetry, get a slightly darker cerused finish to distinguish them

Without doubt, a good part of wood's appeal is due to the fact that, like us, each piece of timber is unique - its color, texture and grain are as individual as a human personality, so we keep discovering new aspects of its beauty and versatility to delight in. "But there are other good reasons why being surrounded with hardwood makes us feel good," Jovanovich points out. "It is exactly the kind of material that today's environmentally conscious consumer demands: One that's renewable, sustainable, plentiful, durable and easy to work with - all of which makes

it an excellent return on investment, too." And that feeling of well-being is not just in our minds or pocketbooks: Wood is healthy, it doesn't harbor dust and other allergens, and it gives off almost no VOCs in its natural state. Bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. What does Monroe County Habitat for Humanity do, exactly? There are many misconceptions about how Monroe County Habitat for Humanity serves our community. The most common misconception is that they give free homes to unemployed people, which couldn’t be further from the truth. MC Habitat for Humanity is based on “neighbors helping neighbors with a hand up, not a hand out.” Kelly Kemmerer, Executive Director of the organization, spoke with us about the the unique services that MC Habitat offers and how they can help you and your family.
Tell us about the general mission of Monroe County Habitat for Humanity (MCHFH)? The mission of our organization is “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Monroe County Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.” The vision of MCHFH is “a Monroe County where everyone has a safe, decent place to live.”
What are some common misconceptions about your organization? Many people believe that Habitat for Humanity gives free homes to unemployed people, and that could not be further from the truth. Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is based on the philosophy of “neighbors helping neighbors with a hand up, not a hand out.” MCHFH partners with homeowners and struggling renters who earn 60% or less of median income to empower them have safer, more decent homes. Partner families contribute sweat equity hours and pay for their homes, or the materials to repair their homes through low and zero interest loans.
What is difference between your Home Preservation and Home Ownership programs? The home ownership program helps struggling renters to become homeowners. A renter’s earnings must fall within a stated range that will allow them to become a successful homeowner. The applicant supplies 250 hours of sweat equity to MCHFH per person and they attend financial literacy classes. If they are approved to purchase a Habitat

HOME UPGRADES FOR BETTER
indoor air quality When most people think about air quality, they're typically thinking about outdoor pollution. However, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the air inside your home can be as polluted, or even more so, than the air outside. The concentrations of some indoor pollutants can be as much as 2-5 times higher than typical outdoor concentrations. This is partly due to increasingly energy-efficient home construction and the growing use of synthetic materials in furnishings and interior finishes. The air inside your home also contains pollutants from everyday activities like cooking, bathing and cleaning. A family of four can produce the equivalent of 22-30 pounds of moisture per day from normal activities, according to the Institute of Specialist Surveyors and Engineers, while household cleaners and products like paint, upholstery, carpeting and plastics can release chemicals containing volatile organic compounds. Pets and dust mites also contribute to poor air quality. On average, Americans spend an estimated 90% of their time indoors, according to the EPA. All that time with minimal access to daylight and fresh air can take a toll on your health.
Support your hvac system Many homeowners assume their heating and cooling (HVAC) system is adequate to manage their home's indoor air quality. Typically, these systems only circulate existing indoor air, so you're missing out on the benefits of circulating fresher, cleaner air. What's more, without regular servicing and frequent filter replacements, it's easy for standard HVAC systems to fall short. This is especially true in older homes or in households where there's a high volume of allergens like dust or pet dander. Adding standalone or integrated devices can help give your HVAC system some extra support. Air purifiers can effectively help filter pollutants while ultraviolet lights purify the air and help control pollutants like bacteria, mold and mildew. Another common pitfall is humidity control. Too much moisture in the air can contribute to significant air quality problems. On the other hand, air that's too dry can promote dusty, abrasive conditions that are hard on allergies and other respiratory conditions.

and soap flakes.
Today's skylights can also be automated to open and close at regular intervals or extend and retract shades to block light as needed. Many models, including those from Velux, can even connect to a smartphone app to combine convenience with a soothing mood booster that supports health and wellness.
Avoid adding to the problem Burning a candle may make a room smell fresh and clean, but it's doing little to help improve your air quality. In fact, you're just masking unappealing odors while releasing harmful particles into the air. Similarly, smoking indoors traps those chemicals inside your home, which can wreak havoc on indoor air quality.
Watch for unexpected culprits Many of the things that contribute to poor indoor air quality are obvious, but there are many others that may surprise you. For example, cooking food using gas appliances can emit hazardous chemicals and compounds, like nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, that contribute to poor indoor climates when not properly ventilated. Homes with gas stoves contain 50-400% higher concentrations of nitrogen dioxide than those with electric stoves, according to a report from the Rocky Mountain Institute, and the EPA found prolonged exposure to the gas can lead to asthma and other respiratory issues. Similarly, when plastics are warmed up, they can give off potentially toxic fumes. Avoid leaving toys or other plastic items in direct sunlight. If you have heated floors or other heated surfaces, keep plastic away to prevent those heatprovoked emissions. With proper upgrades, adjustments and care, you can enjoy a home filled with fresh, healthy air and comfortable surroundings year-round. Learn more at whyskylights.com. Family Features

DO RESEARCH AND PLAN AHEAD Mapping out your project early and thoroughly can help you avoid delays. This is especially important when it comes to materials, said John Brown of Bliffert Lumber and Hardware. "The quicker a homeowner can make selections, the sooner we can get it on order and get it in," Bliffert said. Some contractors are adjusting the way they approach planning to offset delays. For example, selecting materials
AVOID MAKING CHANGES Once your plans are set and your materials have been ordered, avoid unnecessary delays by changing your project scope or material selection. In this environment, project timelines are extremely tight and even minor changes can create significant disruptions, especially if there's a delay in obtaining different materials or your new ideas require a different crew that wasn't already scheduled for your job.
