Finland – a small giant To succeed in a constantly changing world, you have to change as well. Finland has reinvented itself in just one short century – and we are still at it. Our national character and Northern heritage have boosted us to the top of all kinds of country rankings. However, at the heart of our competences are the fields of technology, health and wellbeing. Finland is a small giant in healthcare with the world’s most efficient healthcare system built on research, innovation and smart business. For decades, Finland has invested hundreds of millions of euros per year in health-related education, research, and research infrastructures. This has resulted in creating cuttingedge Finnish research and treatment for such specialist areas as cancer, brain diseases, orthopedics, and genetics. Finland has an abundance of creative knowhow in digital solutions and new health technologies, and we have one of the largest startup ecosystems in the world. A unique feature of Finland is that our health data, registers and databases, including biobank and genomic, are available for patients as efficiently as possible to increase the quality of care. At the same time, databases are available for researchers thanks to new legislation permitting the secondary use of Finnish health and social data also to international researchers. A single point of contact will act as the data permit authority and service operator overseeing the ethically sound use of the data.

In recent years, increasing number of studies have shown the potential benefits of pre-emptive pharmacogenetic testing in patient care. However, many of the drugs, where pharmacogenetics is relevant, are commonly used drugs in patient care. And, the PGx test should be taken pre-emptively for those patients, who are in need of drugs depending on pharmacogenetics.
