My Dearest friends, We have finally come to the end of 2013, and it is time to take stock of the year. Each and every one of us has no doubt had their fair share of good or bad experiences. Hopefully these will make us grow stronger and perhaps encourage us to rethink our attitudes. To improve ourselves and to tune in to the laws of the nature, the universe and the world we live in. Some friends have left us, most recently our much revered Madiba, former South African President, Nelson Mandela, a beloved icon of peace and hope for Africa and the World. As their earthly experiences end in 2013, for us their friends, family and collaborators they will forever remain alive in our hearts. I take this opportunity to extend our condolences to the families and friends of our dearly departed.
Discover in this new edition some entertainment ideas for the holidays, tips for preparing your Christmas dinner, even your fortunes in our horoscope. You dear readers, have communicated with us all year round, bringing to our world your ideas, your thoughts, knowledge, new business ventures, new restaurants and night clubs, to name but a few. Congratulations to you all and thank you for giving us the will to continue to develop your favourite lifestyle magazine. I also would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our friends at Millionaires Gaming Africa for celebrating 8 years in Accra and for the opening of their latest and most imposing gaming centre in Osu, the Golden Dragon Casino. Why not join them over the festive season and take a chance on lady luck? Lots of Love, Merry Christmas and a Happy New year… Enjoy!!!

MANDELA JOINS THE ANCESTORS Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Mvezo, a village near Mthatha in the Transkei, on July 18, 1918, to Nonqaphi Nosekeni and Henry Mgadla Mandela. His father was the principal councillor to the Acting Paramount Chief of the Thembu royal house. Rolihlahla literally means “pulling the branch of a tree”. After his father’s death in 1927, the young Rolihlahla became the ward of Jongintaba Dalindyebo, the Paramount Chief, to be groomed to assume high office. Nelson Mandela became an anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist. Mandela served over 27 years in prison, initially on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. An international campaign lobbied for his release, which was granted in 1990 amid escalating civil strife.

Mandela published his autobiography and opened negotiations with President F. W. de Klerk to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994, in which he led the ANC to victory. He served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 and was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. e

“No one in my family had ever attended school. On the first day of school my teacher, Miss Mdingane, gave each of us an English name. This was the custom among Africans in those days and was undoubtedly due to the British bias of our education. That day, Miss Mdingane told me that my new name was Nelson. Why this particular name I have no idea.” “I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.”

The artist featured was born in 1966 to a Ghanaian mother and Togolese father, Gabriel Eklou makes paintings that bring contemporary Ghana into fuller view. Self taught, Eklou maintains that painting brings him closer to nature, his culture and his people in particular. His compositions remain unaffected by the art establishment and strong in their individuality and uniqueness. His trademark elongated figures are majestic and proud. They exude inner strength, their stilt like legs stretching deep into the red African soil. They are contemporary Africans, dancing, hunting, working or sitting in quiet contemplation. The serene atmosphere of Roots Hotel Apartment proved a fitting backdrop to the exhibition and guests had an opportunity to enjoy the internal beauty of the hotel and to meet the friendly staff. e

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE “Don’t be surprised if you see an unknown white bearded man going down your chimneywith lots of gifts for kids. Did I just say chimney?”
C
hristmas traditions often depict the unique geographical and ethnic cultures of where the festival takes place. They are so varied and in some instances downright hysterical. Here are some Christmas traditions one can find across the globe:
GHANA
Fireworks and doing Good in return for blessings Ghanaians are a very religious people and no better time to see this than during the Christmas holidays. Christmas Eve is when the celebrations begin with church services with lots of drumming, dancing and of course praying. Children put on nativity plays. Choirs then lead congregants to sing and make merry in front of the Church. The dance is a means of glorifying God, for being alive and healthy. Songs are sung in local dialects dependent on the type of Church one attends and the language
34 | December 2013 ENJOY No 85
the people understand best. Sometimes services and dancing go on all night long whilst other people celebrate Christmas Eve with fireworks and parties. On Christmas day the churches are packed. People come out dressed in their best outfits. After the church service on Christmas morning, people quickly go back to their houses to start giving and receiving gifts; including food shared among neighbours. Most homes will have some traditional foods prepared for visitors including jollof, banku and okro soup and rice and fufu and plenty to drink. The Ghanaian military orchestrate a giant firework display at Independence Square,a sight to behold.
FINLAND
A Family Trip to the Cemetery Finnish families have one of the most elaborate Christmas celebration rituals. It’s not uncommon to hear parents scream out Iloista joulua (Merry Christmas in Finnish)! The festivities start when families take a cleansing sauna bath in the morning. They then have a traditional breakfast before heading out to the town’s declaration of christmas peace at noon. After lunch, the
house is cleaned and the tree is decorated, cchildren are dressed up and the family marches out to the cemetery at six o’clock. In a practice similar to the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead, Finnish families visit dead family members to leave candles and reflect. That way, past and present members of the family all partake in the Christmas festivities.
BELGIUM
Double Trouble with Two Father Christmases In Belgium, in order to determine who the good children were, Father Christmas adopts the attitude of a detective and travels from the North Pole twice in the year. St Nicholas spies on kids who speak the Walloon language by visiting twice, once to observe their behaviour, and a second time to either bring gifts or leave a bundle of sticks in a basket or in their shoes. Pere Noel, who visits French speaking children partners up with Pere Fouettard to ask about the children’s behavior throughout the year. Then, on his birthday (December 6), he leaves them either chocolate or sticks based on their behaviour.
ITALY
The Witch in Search of baby Jesus leaves a trail of goodies Italians do not really believe in the bearded man in red living up in the North Pole and their giving out goodies to children, their gift giver is a witch, yes a witch.
Christmas story
The story goes that a witch named La Befana was approached by the Magi (wise men) for directions to see the Baby Jesus. The disgruntled witch directed them, but made it clear that she was too busy to worry about accompanying them on their trip. But then La Befana had an epiphany; she felt wicked and wretched for missing out on the greatest birthday of all time. Since then, she has been travelling all over Italy in search of the Infant Jesus while leaving sacks of toys for good children along the way. Centuries later, tens of thousands of Italians around Rome uphold the tradition on Epiphany Eve (January 5). Aside from gifts, every child also receives a stocking full of coal. The bonus being that the coal is actually darkened candy, which makes for a rather delicious punishment.
CZECH REPUBLIC
Hello Santa, can I have a husband instead this year? In the Czech Republic single ladies compete for space on Santa’s list. Every Christmas Eve, single Czech women rest their backs against a door, kick their feet up, and toss their shoes in the air to see where they will land. The belief is that if the shoe lands facing the door Santa will bring them a husband in the upcoming year. But for the unlucky women whose shoe winds up pointing inside, they can count on another year of singlehood.
BRAZIL
Santa drops the warm clothing, for some Samba Any time Santa leaves the North Pole to visit the folks below the equator, he returns totally tanned. Well, for the Samba dancing and soccer loving folks in Brazil it wasn’t good to have the North Pole native fly in from the South in his red and white with his reindeers all sweaty from the sun. Brazil’s Papai Noel flies down from Greenland and drops the traditional heavy Santa attire for sleek vacation-like clothing. Don’t be surprised if you see an unknown white bearded man going down your chimneywith
lots of gifts for kids. Did I just say chimney? But seriously, chimneys in warm Brazil? Well that’s how weird the stories get.
THE NETHERLANDS
Zwarte Piet (Black Peter “the Elf”), Santa’s sidekick Dutch author, Jan Schenkman wrote a book called “Saint Nicholas and His Servant” in 1845, in which Saint Nick (Santa) was accompanied by a “dark man” in Moorish clothing who travelled to Amsterdam from a Spanish steamboat. That servant came to be known as Zwarte Piet (Black Peter) — a mischievous servant who would come to shore, pepper the city with sweets and nuts, and then snatch up naughty kids and throw them into his bag on Saint Nicholas Eve (December 5). Today, hundreds of adults throughout the Netherlands paint their face black and wear wigged afros to dress up as Zwarte. e

Place the roast in a pan large enough to hold it comfortably, bone-side down, and spread the top thickly with the salt and pepper. Roast the meat for 45 minutes. Without removing the meat from the oven, reduce the oven temperature to 325 degrees F and roast for another 30 minutes. Finally, increase the temperature to 450 degrees F and roast for another 15 to 30 minutes, until the internal temperature of the meat is 125 degrees F. (Be sure the thermometer is exactly in the center of the roast.) The total cooking time will be between 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 hours. Meanwhile, make the sauce. Remove the roast from the oven and transfer it to a cutting board. Cover it tightly with aluminum foil and allow the meat to rest for 20 minutes. Carve and serve with the sauce. Note: Be sure your oven is very clean before setting it at 500 degrees F. Mustard Horseradish Sauce Whisk together the mayonnaise, mustards, horseradish, sour cream, and salt in a small bowl.

W
hat is the measure of good parenting? Many of today’s parents are completely out of touch with the primary objective of parenting, which is the modeling of human interaction, the shaping of moral, spiritual, and intellectual framework for the child, however the value of parenting has been reduced to paying school fees, buying the latest game console, clothes, smartphones, vacations around the world etc. This is a disastrous illusion that must be corrected if the family is to be relevant in the 21st century. The parents and fundamental parenting are needed by their children now more than ever. I would like to rephrase the biblical axiom, ‘What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?’ It reads, ‘What does a parent gain to increase their things, but neglect the development of their child?’ Scientific evidence largely from the field of neuroscience, which concerns our basic biology and how our brains develop, shows that the human child is ‘hardwired 46 | December 2013 ENJOY No 85
to connect’. We are hardwired to connect to other people. Meeting basic needs for connection is essential to health and human flourishing, a basic need that only a father, mother, or adequate a substitute can provide. If that primal connection is not from parents/guardians that care, there is likelihood that those values and virtues will be mutated from a multiple of influences, friends, media, and possibly degenerate family members. A (negative) experience can be seared into a young person’s mind to the point it becomes the norm, and the brain will constantly, seek to return to that state, disrupting healthy relationships if necessary to return to that imbalance which it’s accustomed. So then, young teenage girls and boys that grow up with an inflated material value minus the necessary character, invariably become adults with that same inflated material value. Dysfunction creating an exact copy of itself…a generational curse if you will.
I once heard someone joke that home is the place where family members go when they are tired of being nice to other people. Unfortunately some homes actually seem to work that way. To build a strong family, you have to make your home a supportive environment. Psychologist William James said, “In every person from the cradle to the grave, there is a deep craving to be appreciated.” Spending quality time with each child independently, having a family day, and child centred activities are the key. Purposefully engaging all the members of the family will grow the bonds between family members, and the home becomes a haven for nurturing everyone, even the parents. e

Famous Capricorn : Ricky Martin BORN: DECEMBER 24, 1971 - SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO Although one of this Latin singer’s famous songs, “Livin’ la Vida Loca” might have his audiences thinking he really does live a crazy life, the truth is actually far from most people’s speculation. This grounded, determined and focused Capricorn is very settled in his personal life, and it’s reported that he works hard to make sure his family and friends are taken care of. His Pisces Moon demonstrates his sensitive, caring nature, indicating he is a very and giving person, which is evidenced in nonprofit organization he founded to help eliminate human trafficking Famous Capricorn : Jordin Sparks BORN: DECEMBER 22, 1989 - PHOENIX, ARIZONA, USA Jordin won the popular TV reality show American Idol at age 17, making her the youngest winner ever! Her dedicated and ambitious Capricorn nature tells us that was just the tip of the iceberg for her career, which has expanded to include acting and her own perfume as well. It’s also important to note that her Moon, the ruler of her emotions, is in intense and intensely driven Scorpio, so once she sets her mind to something, it’s not likely she’ll stop until she reaches her goal - or beyond!
Aries 21/3-20/04 Your enthusiasm runs especially high this month, dear Aries. You are itching to expand, learn, and grow - to move beyond the mundane details of everyday life in order to gain life experiences. Travel, or anything that expands your horizons, is highly favored. You have the courage and drive to make your vision a reality, making this is an ideal month for beginning a new venture. For those of you studying or those who want to, this is an opportune time for advancing your interests. You may be able to gain property or support from family; or you could secure a loan or mortgage that helps you to improve your home life around the 10-12. Stabilizing family and domestic affairs should be in focus, and solid professional plans can be laid down now, as you have a special sense of timing for practical matters. Working solidly will help you to gain a strong feeling of accomplishment. Promotional efforts can pay off. Transportation issues can reach a critical point around the 17th. o

Taurus 21/4-21/05
Gemini 22/5-21/06
Financial and intimacy matters figure prominently this month, dear Taurus, and it’s a time for strategy and planning. If you are waiting for a loan or payment to come through, this is the month when you’ll receive word. The 2-3 is especially strong for taking charge of your shared or joint resources, as well as debts and loans. It’s time to clear up financial matters between a partner or expartner, and/or to handle debts. Don’t back away from exploring deeper issues just for the sake of peace. A meeting of minds with a close partner is possible this month, and particularly around the 10-12. The lines of communication open up, and you can solve or resolve very important basic, practical matters putting your head together with someone special. Together you can create something very useful or you can be quite productive together. Happiness and fulfillment through the expansion of your mind, widening your social circle, travel, or connections to people of a different cultural background than you is indicated.
The needs of a partner or close loved one are paramount this month, dear Gemini, and you are in the position to offer support. The New Moon that occurs on the 2nd occurs when your ruler, Mercury, is supported by actionoriented Mars, and brings strong energy for taking charge of your relationships. You have an opportunity to improve or attract close partnerships. Honoring others in your life is especially important, and is your route to fulfillment and success at this point. Being agreeable without compromising your integrity is your best bet, and others will surely take note! You are especially companionable this month. From the 7th, Mars is working in harmony with your sign and bringing energy and animation to your romantic world, as well as your creative impulses. You are especially forwardlooking, enterprising, and enthusiastic now, and others are bound to recognize and appreciate these qualities in you. Competitiveness drives you to do bigger and better things.

Cancer 22/6-23/07
This is a month for getting things done, dear Cancer, in many areas of life, and especially your work, organizing your home, and getting going on a fitness program. December is strong for taking care of business, handling details, increasing your efficiency, and for working enthusiastically at tasks that help you get caught up in your work. This is a period when you’re most likely to get positive word regarding your health or job situation. An especially strong period for all of these things, especially new projects and programs, is from the 3-12. Recognition, rewards, or a new job can be in the stars for some. This month, you continue to reclaim your personal power, and you insist that others accept you for who you are.
Leo 24/7-23/08 This month, your attention turns to creative projects, hobbies, pleasure, children, and romance, dear Leo. These areas of your life are in for a tremendous boost, particularly from the 2nd forward. The 4-12 is an outstanding period for beginning a new creative venture. You are more dedicated, confident, and gogetting than usual; and with your cando attitude, success is guaranteed. You are magnetic and inspire confidence. Creativity is peaking at this time of year, and you have the chance to find new and exciting ways for expressing yourself as a unique and creative individual. If you’re currently involved in a creative project you can also benefit from bringing a new perspective to the table.
Virgo 24/8-23/09 Your home and family life comes into sharp focus in December, dear Virgo. This is a month when ties to family, and especially children, strengthen. Your attention to domestic concerns is paramount this month, although romantic matters also figure strongly. You are likely to learn something important about the past or revolving around information that was hidden or lost. New insights can be intensely revealing. Avoid pushing too hard, but allow yourself to cross the usual thresholds, as you can make great strides with disarming honesty combined with respect and concern. If you want to make changes on the home front, whether it’s literally in your home or with your domestic routines, or about family relationships.
Libra 24/9-23/10
December is an especially busy month for you, Libra. Life speeds up, others seem to demand more of your attention than usual, and the pace of your life is hectic at times. Important, positive information or news comes your way. This is an excellent month for a new mental pursuit or project, if only you have a chance to focus on it! A New Moon occurs in your communications and learning sector on the 2nd, bringing fresh energy for finding new areas of interest, for studies, and for making new contacts. This cycle places added emphasis in your life on communication skills, learning, and daily interactions and contacts.
Scorpio 24/10-22/11 Personal finances are a strong focus of the month, dear Scorpio. Major opportunities to increase your income now and down the road surface. It’s time to make important changes to the way you manage money, and the attitude that drives the way you attract money and possessions into your life. Focus on detoxifying and cleansing from the 7th, when Mars enters your soul sector: out with the old, in with the new. There can be some indecision during this cycle, but it’s necessary now as it’s a time for reviewing plans. Your personal influence runs high, and although life is not necessarily exciting this month, chances to improve your feelings of security are strong.
Sagittarius 23/11-21/12 The ball is in your court this month, dear Sagittarius, and you’re enjoying a surge of optimism, especially from the second week forward. The more positive energy you radiate, the more opportunities open up. The New Moon on the 2nd occurs in your sign, giving you an energetic boost to put personal plans into motion, as well as to take steps to put forth the best version of “you”. After a period of some withdrawal, you are now more willing to experience life to its fullest. You attract the right people and the right resources, and encounters with others are consistently working to your advantage. Reasonable speculation may pay off around the 12th. Connecting intimately with another person boosts your sense of security.
Capricorn 22/12-20/01
Until the last week of December, this is one of the most private, withdrawn periods of the year for you, dear Capricorn. While it’s not the best time to push forward aggressively with new ventures, it’s an excellent period for developing new plans and strategies. By the second week of the month, your energy for furthering professional and worldly ambitions is strong, and you could be especially interested in accomplishing practical goals. There is increased satisfaction in taking care of your more basic concerns and a stronger sense of pacing and timing. You may find yourself taking on the role of consultant or advisor this month, or you could benefit from assistance from someone.
Aquarius 21/01-19/02
Your social agenda is especially lively, sometimes too busy, and you find yourself very much in demand in December, dear Aquarius. Still, contact with others is likely to be quite fruitful. Goals that involve joining or strengthening ties in a group project or activity, networking, and making connections are highly favored from the 2nd. Particularly in the second week of the month, there is a strong sense of priorities, timing, and pacing when it comes to your work, as well as health routines and programs. Take advantage. Important news comes from a friend on the 15-16. A creative or romantic interest blossoms or demands attention around the 17th.
Pisces 20/02-20/03
You are especially accountable for your actions this month, dear Pisces. Everyone seems to be looking over your shoulder, observing what you do and what you are capable of. This is one of the busiest times of the year professionally, when you are in high demand; or for some, when responsibilities to others are in strong focus. A New Moon occurs on the 2nd, activating and bringing power to your sector of career and reputation. This brings new and fresh energy to your professional goals, your career itself, and to your standing in society.
