Editorial “It is because you hold the best hammer that all problems are nails” ! Dear Friends,
I was delighted to have received many mails telling me how much you have missed us! I have to confess that we have missed you all! Do not hesitate to send your mails to me dp@enjoyaccra.com or to our publication manager juanito@enjoyaccra.com. The crisis that has been rocking our country is now showing signs of retreating, thanks to judicious initiatives from competent quarters, and on the back of the resilience of the good people of this nation including you, friends of ENJOY. It is my fervent wish and belief that this perceived improvement will continue and that together, we are on the way to experiencing exceptionally enjoyable moments. I am urging you to keep on with that positive and active stand of engaging us with your comments, suggestions and, of course, your fulminations. In this issue I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family of my late friend, Ekow Awoonor. May his soul rest in perfect peace! I invite you to share my appreciation of the work of promising artist, Kwame Osa, whom ENJOY and ORION advertising will partner later this year for an exhibition. I am equally fond of Victoria Michaels, our Star of the Month, and her aspiration to equal the achievements of Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks. ENJOY welcome CIMAF to Ghana and wish them every sucess with their cement factory. We were delighted to organize the ceremony that we feature here, of the laying of the foundation stone, hosting His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and Her Excellency Mrs Nesha Alaoui M’HAMMDI, Ambassador of Morocco. Finally school has resumed. Together with BIC, I wish good luck to all students for the 2014-2015 academic year. Work hard! Enjoy!!!

HURRAY FOR THE NEW ACADEMIC YEAR Brought to you by BIC
Darryl has been studying hard to become a pilot “If along the way facilities are not in place here for me to achieve my dreams, I trust my parents will do everything in their power to let me study abroad”.
T
he holidays are over! Hurray for the new academic year! The ENJOY team is bringing you the thoughts of parents, teachers and wards as schools resume this month of September.
We visited some bookshops. Parents were there, mostly with their children: “Let them make their choice, they might reject the items I choose simply because I did not allow them to select themselves”, said Patrick. He did not want to be photographed, though. But Linda did, and she cheerfully shared her thoughts. No, school resumption is not much of a stress for her. Although prices of items seem to have shot up, she assured us she was doing her shopping with a delighted heart, because it was all about her children’s future! She would not impose a choice of a career on any of her two kids, she said. How she was right! Darryl, 13, and Mikayla, 7, already have a clear idea of what they want for themselves in the future. “I want to become an ICT specialist. ” says little Mikayla.

Darryl has been studying hard to become a pilot. “If along the way facilities are not in place here for me to achieve my dreams, I trust my parents will do everything in their power to let me study abroad”, he asserted. Aziz Otoo was buying books for his kids and for himself. Himself? “Yes, I am a teacher and also a university student myself”, he explained. But no, school items can never be too heavy an item on his budget, because “it is knowledge that you are buying and it is worth it”, he posited. We spotted Prince Mohammed before the till, making payment for a large number of books and text books. He did not shudder at the figure being displayed for him to pay, “Whatever the cost, I shall pay. I am ever ready to support the children in their education until they reach the sky. That is the best inheritance I can ever bequeath to them”. ENJOY also visited some schools which have already reopened for the 2014-205 academic year. Some would not allow any reportage carried out on their activities, because “the parents and school council have not given prior consent”! Anyway.
Whatever the cost, I shall pay. I am ever ready to support the children in their education until they reach the sky. That is the best inheritance I can ever bequeath to them”.

Assembly at Merton School with Mrs Elizabeth Baitie (CEO Merton School)
At Merton International School, the bold advice and watchword colourfully posted at the entrance of the beautiful building was: “PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD”. From what we witnessed on this first day, Wednesday, 3rd September 2014, wards were ready to do just that! One felt that these boys and girls, impeccably dressed in their uniforms, were ready and enthusiastic about resuming school. They loved being back there... or starting their long educational journey there. Admire their pictures during assembly, where they heartily saluted Mrs Elizabeth Baitie, the CEO, Mrs Jacqueline Adeti, the Head Teacher, Miss Dadzi, the Administration and HR Manager, and where they got to know their new teachers and tutors as well as the new Curriculum Coordinator, Mr Steve Collins.

How to deal with your post holiday mood B
difficult, snacks are to be avoided:. Tensions accumulated during the day should not be offloaded at meal time, which should be an enjoyable time. As far as possible, don’t eat a meal in a state of nervousness or precipitation. Set your concerns aside and enjoy the moment.
Indulge yourself!
Respect your sleep!
Get massaged...
And what if your new resolution was precisely to make yourself happy? Those pleasures inherent to the holidays cannot stop just like that! It is important to allow yourself some “gaps”. Life often causes enough worries. The key is to make time for yourself on a daily basis. And know that people who are capable of appreciating the little things are, generally speaking, happier.
ack to school now! Away with the holidays and insouciance! Sleep, diet, stress management... it is now time to resume your good habits. ENJOY is suggesting below to students and parents alike how to brave the beginning of the new academic year in a serene fashion. Sleep occupies one third of our existence, say the specialists. This crucial function of our system allows the body to regenerate. It is therefore essential not to neglect it. During the holidays, sleep hours in some situations tend to be shortened or prolonged unnecessarily. Our brain accumulates fatigue, performance decreases... the vicious circle! To resume a good pace for the new academic year, sleep cycles must be respected. It is essential to set yourself regular times for going to bed and for waking up in order to allow your biological clock to synchronize.
Get back good eating habits!
Barbecues, fritters, unplanned picnics, etc. Everything that was permitted is over well... almost. Little pleasures are of course permitted from time to time but with the new academic year, it is essential to consider our diet carefully. A simple, varied and balanced diet is one of the keys to good health. Prime choices should include, fruit and vegetables, proteins (meat, fish, eggs) and carbohydrates). It is important to take 3 meals a day at regular times. Although this is 10 | September 2014 ENJOY No 92
cfaogroup.com
During the holidays, the body is relaxed, the mind is elsewhere. Back to school, stressful days just follow one another. Being too tense is a drain on your resources and can prevent you from getting fit. And to tone the body, the back massage can be a good remedy. When the energy is there, but it does not flow any longer due to tensions, manual therapies are a solution.
Sport to feel better The holiday mood still prevails yet business has resumed. To avoid getting breathless when climbing the steps, fighting for the bus or carrying satchels or backpacks, it’s better to reconnect with sport. It is recommended to practice 30 minutes of physical activity daily. By making the same movements every day, the progression is much faster. The duration of physical activity can be increased gradually. Sport promotes muscle-building but not only this. It helps combat stress, anxiety and depression. Sport also helps you to feel better. It improves confidence and selfesteem and provides even better sleep. You have no more excuses for not practising!
When the holidays have been great, school is often seen as a chore, a difficult return to the routine of everyday life, the beginning of new restrictions. However, school resumption is not necessarily synonymous with deprivation.
Stimulate your brain
You are back to the nitty-gritty now! But it is no easy task resetting the machine after several weeks of ‘free wheeling’. In order to get back into the swing of things, read novels, awaken your creative instincts by drawing, practice games of logic such as the Sudoku puzzles (see page 45) or chess. All these activities are in fact an effective way to work one’s brain and test one’s memory every day. In short, remember to wake up your brain gently but surely to brave the new academic year! e

.........September 3, 1939
It Is the Month of S Origin: The month name September is derived from the Latin word septem, “seven,” because this had been the seventh month of the early Roman calendar. It was a calendar whereby the year began in March. But the Julian calendar reform shifted the start of new Year back two months to where it is now: January 1. The change made September in the new calendar the ninth month and one of only four Gregorian months with 30 days.
The Second World War started with Great Britain, France, New Zealand and Australia declaring war on Germany after Adolf Hitler’s refusal to withdraw his troops from Poland.
.........September 9, 1776 The name “United States of America” was adopted by the US.
.........September 15, 1928 Alexander Fleming discovered the drug penicillin..
.........September 22, 1960 The Republic of Mali gained independence. Modibo Keïta was elected the first President.
.........September 22, 1735 Sir Robert Walpole became the first Prime Minister to move into 10 Downing Street in London, which has since become the official home of the British Prime Minister.

Did you know ?? The shortest scheduled flight in the world lasts 2 minutes only. It is operated by Loganair and links Westray and Papa Westray, two of the Orkney Islands, North of Scotland, just 2 km apart. However this is not a cheap flight since a passenger is charged 25 euros for the round trip. 50% of human DNA is identical to that of the banana. Perhaps that explains why banana has so many benefits to our health: this fruit prevents heartburn, morning sickness, and constipation. It also helps reduce the risk of death from heart attack by about 40%, experts say. A man spends on average 43 minutes a day gazing at (ten) 10 different women, while women spend 20 minutes a day gazing at six (6) different men. The Missing Watch A peaceful mind can think better than a worked up mind. Allow a few minutes of silence to your mind every day, and see, how sharply it helps you to set your life the way you expect it to be!
There once was a farmer who discovered that he had lost his watch in the barn. It was no ordinary watch because it had sentimental value for him. After searching high and low among the hay for a long while; he gave up and enlisted the help of a group of children playing outside the barn. He promised them that the person who found it would be rewarded. Hearing this, the children hurried inside the barn, went through and around the entire stack of hay but still could not find the watch. Just when the farmer was about to give up looking for his watch, a little boy went up to him and asked to be given another chance. The farmer looked at him and thought, “Why not? After all, this kid looks sincere enough.” So the farmer sent the little boy back in the barn. After a while the little boy came out with the watch in his hand! The farmer was both happy and surprised and so he asked the boy how he succeeded where the rest had failed. The boy replied, “I did nothing but sit on the ground and listen. In the silence, I heard the ticking of the watch and just looked for it in that direction.” e - Author unknown.

“Still life and portraits are loaded with energy and resonate with vitality, emotion, beauty and culture.”
ou may be familiar with artists such as Oskar Kokoschka, Georges Rouault and Marc Chagall, as exponents of ‘expressionist art’, which is defined as an artistic style in which the artist attempts to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions that objects and events arouse in him.
Y
Well, ENJOY has been following our own contemporary expressionist artist, Kwame Osa, 31, whose works can be said to represent a clear manifestation of the rich cultural heritage of the people around him. What Kwame puts into his work exposes what he feels and sees in the daily activities of the world around him. He harnesses the essence of the different cultural backgrounds of the people around the world and captures them with light and graceful expressions. You can see that free movement is common in his painting. Still life and portraits are loaded with energy and resonate with vitality, emotion, beauty and culture. Elements of movement are ever present in his work; human figures portray emotion with an added touch of spirituality. Interestingly, the eclectic Kwame Osa touches on Impressionism thus nodding a wink at Walter Richard Sickert, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley, who all made an impact during the past two centuries as masters of impressionist painting. 20 | September 2014 ENJOY No 92
EXPRESSIONISM AND IMPRESSIONISM: KWAME OSA PAINTS FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS The artist, for instance, flirts with the concepts of the suppleness and unevenness of the female body. Consequently, surreptitious harmony exists between his knife strokes, figures and background, a move that ensures an effective transmission of his thoughts and ideas. Osa has become one of Ghana’s very bold young painters. His progress during these past few years is palpable. His collection consists of hundreds of beautiful pieces out of which ENJOY has chosen to showcase those which express magnificently the lives and cultural backgrounds that surround this young artist. Born on 27th August 1983 in Legon Accra. He studied in the Ghanatta College of Arts, and graduated with a first class certificate and a Diploma in Fine Art. In a bid to encourage Kwame and also in order to step boldly into the yuletide festivities, ENJOY Magazine will be organizing an exhibition of Kwame Osa’s paintings in Accra later this year. e The vernissage of ENJOY-Kwame Osa’s exhibition shall be strictly by invitation. However, a number of complementary entry tickets will be given out to art lovers and collectors. 14th July is referred to as the Bastille Day, after the notorious old prison in Paris. Erected originally to serve as a fortress, Bastille became a royal prison during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was viewed as a symbol of the arbitrariness of royal absolutism in the eyes of part of the population. In the wake of some social and political turbulences, rioters went to loot the weapons they needed at ‘Hotel des Invalides’ on 14th July 1789 in the morning, but could not use any right away because there was no gunpowder or bullets there. They then decided to storm La Bastille, seized the gunpowder and bullets which were stored there, and then released the few captives who were still imprisoned in the fortress. They arrested the garrison of La Bastille and marched them to the City Hall to be judged. The French Revolution had started. e

hat people quit their corporate jobs to enable them to concentrate on an entrepreneurial journey isn’t new, but to quit a job to pursue one’s passion which is modeling, now that’s unheard of. Three years ago, Victoria quit her job with a high flying bank after five years of working for them to become a full time model and an entrepreneur. “I have always known that modeling is what I am called to do, I have a strong sense of purpose in this regard. My time in the bank was just a process that helped sharpen the business side of things for me, although I was also modeling at the same time.”

mi Campbell “After my university I had offers from different organizations and decided to work in a corporate environment. After some years in the bank, I decided the time had come for me to pursue my modeling career and set up a marketing consultancy (VM Consult Ltd) as marketing was my background.” The risk has certainly paid off, Victoria has quite an impressive portfolio, having worked or been involved in media campaigns for brands including Woodin, Da-Viva, MTN, Vodafone, ADB, Hertz-Rent-A-Car, BEL-AQUA and also as a brand ambassador for Ariels Haven Spa. She’s made her mark on the runway, strutting her stuff during Ghana@50 Gold Show, FIMA Events, BBC Fashion Show, Dubai Fashion Week, Glitz Fashion Show , and the Dark and Lovely Hair Fashion Show, amongst others. Her versatility makes it easy for her to excel in any field of modelling be it editorial, runway, commercial, print, fashion catalogue, promo, fitness or glamour. Victoria’s talent, versatility and hard work have not gone unnoticed and she has been profiled by Canoe Magazine, Vogue Italia online, FIMA Magazine and in a special feature in Oh! Yes Magazine. For someone who aspires to follow in the footsteps of the greats such as Naomi Campbell, Oluchi Orlandi and Tyra Banks, it is little surprise that she’s already achieved so much. She was recently honoured at the All Africa Media Networks with a ‘Potential Super Model’ Award on an evening that Joselyn Dumas, Kafui Danku and Juliet Ibrahim were also honoured. “There is this awesome feeling that comes with being appreciated, I believe that reward for good work is more work and that’s exactly what I intend to focus on. Hair Relaxers: The Facts Brought to you by Nouvelle Parfumerie Gandour
“ Depending on your hair type, hair relaxers might cause breakage, hair thinning, and stunt your hair growth.”
B
y definition, a hair relaxer is a lotion or cream that makes the hair easier to straighten and manage. It reduces the curl by breaking down the hair strand and chemically altering the texture. Most women who decide to get their hair relaxed have curls that are unmanageable and in need of taming. The results vary depending on your hair type, but usually a hair relaxer will leave your hair straight for about six to eight weeks. Unlike other permanent straightening methods, relaxing your hair will require touch-ups from time to time. You can go to a professional stylist, or you can purchase a hair relaxing kit to be used at home.
What are the benefits of going to a professional ? While getting your hair relaxed by a professional is expensive, it is really the healthiest option for your hair. Putting any sort of chemicals in your hair can be damaging, and it requires careful attention that a professional can give. First off, a professional can perform a “strand test,” which will test the strength of your hair in order to further assess which type of relaxer is best for you. Apart from their years of experience, some professionals actually keep records of what treatments you have had or what procedures other clients had that will help them determine the best type of relaxer for you.

Should I get my hair relaxed?
Hair relaxers, most commonly, are available in two types: Lye relaxers and No-Lye relaxers. Opinions on the two vary, but as with everything, it depends on your hair type and texture. Lye relaxers are known to work quickly on the hair, but as a result they might also rinse out of your hair easily. Their main ingredient is sodium hydroxide, and they are also known as “alkali” relaxers. No-lye, on the other hand, is mostly made of calcium hydroxide, which can dry out the hair. However, no-lye is better for people with sensitive scalps. When using no-lye, it is imperative that you use a “de-calcifying” shampoo to prevent calcium buildup.
What are some disadvantages of using a hair relaxer? Hair relaxers are very powerful chemicals; they have to be if you want the job done. Depending on your hair type, hair relaxers might cause breakage, hair thinning, and stunt your hair growth. Some women have also complained of scalp irritation, scalp damage or hair loss. Remember that hair relaxers are stripping your hair of its natural oils, so be very attentive to your hair if you decide to relax it.
“Keep your hair properly moisturized, as hair relaxers are very drying to the hair overall. Use deep conditioners weekly, drink plenty of water, and utilize leave-in conditioners.”

What are the different types of hair relaxers?
Many people praise the magical abilities of hair relaxers, and return to their stylist over and over for it. However, achieving manageable, straight hair cannot be done without proper care. If you decide to get your hair relaxed, be prepared to pay special attention to it. Keep your hair properly moisturized, as hair relaxers are very drying to the hair overall. Use deep conditioners weekly, drink plenty of water, and utilize leave-in conditioners. Be sure to use a reconstructing shampoo and conditioner the week following your hair relaxing, and stay away from heat that will further dry your hair. e

Aries 21/3-20/04 September is a month of getting your life into order, dear Aries, most specifically through managing health, lifestyle, work, and daily routines. It’s not always easy, especially with minor unexpected mental and physical health complaints cropping up or, for many of you, the need to support and help out others. However, with determination, you can get organized. The first week of September can involve many adjustments, as well as trying to balance attention to career and responsibilities with leisure time. A Full Moon occurs on the 8th, and a sudden need for your time or services could be involved, or a private matter can now come to light. Even though you may be feeling tired, don’t leave all the decision-making up to someone else.| o 40

Taurus 21/4-21/05 The month is strong for family, romance, creativity and work, dear Taurus. Even so, there are some illusions to bust through in the process, culminating on the 8-10. You might need to come to a friend’s aid or you could find yourself in high demand. For some of you, a buried problem in a relationship comes to light now and demands attention. As the month progresses, there is more emphasis on personal and intimate matters. Love is easier than last month, but still a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. Passions are strong and partners can be more active, assertive, or temperamental than usual. Problems with a partner or close friend that have been put on a shelf are grabbing your attention, and you’re now more willing to attack problems from the root rather than falling back on quick bandaid fixes.
Gemini 22/5-21/06 September is strong for tending to family, personal, and domestic matters, dear Gemini, even though there can be challenges in so doing at times. The first week of the month, try to balance out your life if you’ve been taking on too many new interests or socializing a little too heavily to the detriment of other life departments. The Full Moon on the 8th can illuminate a career or reputation matter that needs your attention, and that seems to cut into your personal time. You’re called upon to bring more creativity, spirituality, and humanitarianism into your career or life plan. You begin to feel more confident about work, daily habits, health, and finances from the 22nd forward. You are less concerned about mistakes you made in the past in these areas, and more interested in what you can do to make changes.
horoscope
Cancer 22/6-23/07 You begin September especially busy, dear Cancer, similarly to how you ended last month. Focus is strong on communicating, learning, connecting, and moving about. You are taking more pride in your mind and personal interests, and you’re bringing more gentleness and peace to your communications. You are learning new things, and changing your perspective, sometimes in very long-lasting and profound ways. The first week of the month requires adjustments. There can be a conflict over someone else’s resources or money, or a frustrating clash of values. Watch for overspending. However, later in the month is far stronger for making purchases of big-ticket items. Leo 24/7-23/08
September can be one of the better months of the year for you for business and money matters, dear Leo. Your desire to enjoy life’s sensual pleasures, to build a business, and to feel more comfortable and secure is strong now, and you can find it easier than usual to attract the right resources to you. You’ll need to clear up some problems with a partner’s contribution, debts, or money owed to you, however, in order to feel more secure. The 8-10 brings stronger awareness of these issues, and changes made now can be very beneficial once you break through some of your illusions. There is too much uncertainty when it comes to these matters, and steps should be taken to clear things up.
Virgo 24/8-23/09 September is a month for making an impression, dear Virgo, as well as for making changes in your manner and image that suit the “you” that you’ve grown to become. The first week involves some adjustments as you release control and build faith in the unknown. The better you do this, the easier it will be to take advantage of a very liberating influence with you later in September. Draw boundaries with your energy and time. This is a time for “allowing” others to appreciate you - in other words, accepting their attention even if you feel much more comfortable playing a supportive role. The Full Moon on the 8th is a powerful one for tending to close relationships.
Libra 24/9-23/10
Capricorn 22/12-20/01
A lot is going on in your heart for much of September, dear Libra. You’re less inclined to take action in your dayto-day life until the last week of the month. You’re quite talkative, however. You may not be revealing much, but you’re inclined to speak up, make connections, and move about. While your mind is active, it’s important to recognize that it’s time for a spiritual and emotional check-up. If there are loose ends in your life to take care of, this is the time to do so, as your solar year winds down. In the first week of the month, adjustments should be made if you have been overdoing activities that take you away from family, or for some of you, there can be conflicts with family if you’ve been pouring a lot of energy into friendships and causes.
This is one of the easier periods of the year for you, dear Capricorn, as your overall attitude is relaxed and easygoing. You very easily see the big picture enough to make everyday problem areas appear rather insignificant. Even so, watch that you avoid excesses in the first week of September, as they can negatively impact your body and general health. You should be especially discreet when communicating about intimate matters at this time. The Full Moon on the 8th brings a sudden need to pay more attention to news and goings-on close to home. Good news about a writing or learning assignment can come now for some of you.
Scorpio 24/10-22/11
Good energy is with you for networking, planning, and connecting this month, dear Scorpio. In the first week of the month, if career matters are competing with your daily affairs, errands, paperwork, and communications, it’s a good idea to make some adjustments in order to balance things out, particularly as career and reputation matters can begin to soar towards the end of September, and you’ll want to take advantage of the opportunities that arise. The Full Moon on the 8th brings a nice change in a creative or romantic pursuit.
Sagittarius 23/11-21/12 This is a strong period for career and reputation, dear Sagittarius. While next year at this time should be especially strong, this year, you have extra energy and charm working for you, and this can impress people in high places! The first week of September requires some adjustments, however, and this is especially the case if you’ve been spending too much time away from your daily responsibilities. Do what you can to balance things out, as you’ll be all the stronger by the time doors open for you in the last week of the month. Energy has been low recently, and you’ve had a hard time knowing how or where to focus your attention. attention.
Aquarius 21/01-19/02 You are more introspective than usual in the first three weeks of the month, dear Aquarius. This is a great time for employing strategy, as you’re more inclined to examine and observe than to take definitive action. Even so, there is quite a bit of pressure on you to fill responsibilities, and some of you could be clashing a little with bosses, teachers, or parents. By the 13th, these pressures ease considerably. More involvement and activity with groups or causes can begin around this time. The Full Moon on the 8th can bring up a mini financial crisis of sorts that stimulates positive change and, ultimately, a stronger feeling of control over your finances.
Pisces 20/02-20/03 Relationships are a strong focus this month, dear Pisces, and can be an arena for self-understanding. This is a time for making compromises, cooperating, and interacting as you put some of your personal goals and interests on hold. It’s also a time for seeking out counsel and companionship, although there can be times this month that you feel pressured by others to make decisions or commitments. In the first week of September, magnification of problems surrounding work can be experienced or vague health and energy issues. Work can shine in the second half of the month, however. What causes acne? Don’t smash that pimple.
What Is Acne? Your skin has tiny holes called pores that that can become blocked by oil, bacteria, and dirt. When this occurs, you may develop a pimple or “zit.” If your skin is repeatedly affected by this condition, you may have acne. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), acne is one of the most common skin problems in the United States. At any one time, between 40 and 50 million people have this condition. Although acne is not a life-threatening condition, it can be painful, particularly when it is severe. It can also cause emotional distress. Acne that appears on the face can impact self-esteem and, over time, may cause permanent scarring. Fortunately, there are effective treatments for this condition that reduce both the number of pimples you get and the chance for scarring to occur.
What Causes Acne? Acne occurs when the pores on your skin become blocked with oil, dead skin, or bacteria. Each pore on your skin is the opening to a follicle. The follicle is made up of a hair and a sebaceous (oil) gland. The oil gland releases sebum (oil), which travels up the hair, out of the pore, and onto your skin. The sebum keeps your skin lubricated and soft. If you develop acne, 46 | September 2014 ENJOY No 92
this may be because of one or more problems in this lubrication process. These possible causes include: • too much oil or sebum is being produced by the follicle • dead skin cells are accumulating in the pore • bacteria has built up in the pore An overabundance of oil, a pore clogged by dead skin cells, and bacteria all contribute to the development of pimples. A zit appears when the bacteria grows in the clogged pore and the oil is unable to escape.
What Are the Risk Factors for Developing Acne? Myths about what contributes to acne are quite common. Many people believe that foods such as chocolate or french fries will contribute to the development of acne. While there is no scientific support for these claims, there are certain risk factors that may put you at risk for developing acne. These include: • hormonal changes caused by puberty or pregnancy • certain medications such as birth control pills or corticosteroids • a diet high in refined sugars or carbohydrates such as bread and chips
Young people are most at risk for developing acne during puberty. During this time, the body undergoes drastic hormonal changes. These hormones can trigger oil production, leading to an increased risk of acne. Hormonal acne related to puberty usually subsides when a teenager reaches adulthood.
What Are the Symptoms of Acne? Acne can be found anywhere on your body. It most commonly develops on the face, back, neck, chest, and shoulders. If you have acne, you will typically notice pimples that are white or black in appearance. Both blackheads and whiteheads are known as comedones. Blackheads open at the surface of the skin giving them a black appearance. Whiteheads are closed just under the surface of the skin, giving them a white appearance. While whiteheads and blackheads are the most common types of acne, other lesions can occur. Inflammatory lesions are more likely to cause scarring of the skin and include the following: • papules—small red, raised bumps caused by infected hair follicles • pustules—small red pimples that have pus at their tips nodules—solid, painful lumps that are beneath the surface of the skin cysts—infections found beneath the skin that contain pus and are often painful
How Is Acne Diagnosed and Treated? If you have symptoms of acne, your doctor will be able to confirm a diagnosis by examining your skin. e

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Home-Schoolers “Home-schooling doesn’t mean you never leave your home, nor does it mean you have to go at it alone.” ome-schoolers typically read a lot of books. One of my alltime favourite books (although I read it before we began homeschooling) is Stephen Covey’s, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. This is one of the books that I credit with changing my life in a major way. It completely changed the way I viewed life, along with the way I acted.
H
Just like those principles changed the minds and lives of many, I think they can do the same for our home-schooling lives. Below is a look at how the 7 Habits can help you become more effective home-schoolers. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Home-schoolers 1) Be Proactive. Take initiative in your home-schooling. What are the passions of your family, and of each child? Structure your learning around these areas. If your child is having difficulties in a particular area or subject, then seek help. Help can be in the form of resources found online, or at the library. Help can also come in the form of tutoring. Bottom line is to find solutions to the problems you encounter. 2) Begin with the End in Mind. What is important to you and your family? Why are you home-schooling? What will the result be when your home-schooling is over? Ask yourself these questions. I encourage you to create a home-schooling mission statement and refer to it often. Each school year, define the most important 3 goals for the family and for each child. Keep them handy as you tackle each daily task and assignment. 3) Put First Things First. The best home-schooling doesn’t function in a checklist manner the way tradition school does. When you know habit #2, then structure your days according to reaching your end result. One should create a plan based on reaching your end, not based on urgency or checking off days or subjects. Your plan may not be a typical Monday to Friday plan. Your plan should reflect and fit into what goes on in your family. I know families that homeschool 3-4 days per week, or just weekends. 4) Think Win/Win. How does your home-schooling benefit others? Find ways that you can use the flexibility of a home-school schedule to work to better your community. Community projects with your family can be great learning experiences, and can spark something in your children. Within your family, create solutions that will help the kids learn and complete the assignments they are working on, while also having fun and the free time they desire. If they have fun when they learn, then they will never stop trying to learn. 5) Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. Home-schooling will challenge you to your core, within your household and outside of it. Spending that much time with anyone, not just your kids, will open up opportunities to disagree and sometimes get frustrated. 48 | September 2014 ENJOY No 92

When your child is frustrated by something, or doesn’t want to do something, do your best to understand the root of this. Seek to understand why and what they are dealing with then you can go toward them understanding you. This will create an atmosphere of care, respect, patience, and problem solving. 6) Synergize. Home-schooling doesn’t mean you never leave your home, nor does it mean you have to go at it alone. Find other families in your community that you can meet with and learn with regularly. Many people call this a home-school coop. Share with one another, learn from each other, and encourage each other. 7) Sharpen the Saw. Homeschooling is a lifestyle, a lifestyle that creates and encourages lifelong learning. Rejuvenate yourself, your family, and your home-schooling by working on all the habits continually, and by putting the lessons learned in home-schooling to work in family and even a family business or mission project. Home-schooling is a wonderful way to educate your children and create a lifestyle centered on and around the family and learning. Highly effective home-schooling is possible for all families! I encourage you to begin to put these 7 habits into practice and enjoy the results that come from it. e

1 tablespoon whole milk
»
» 1 tablespoon ketchup » 3/4 cup grated Romano » » » »

Mini Chicken Meatballs
»
» » » » »
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 pound ground chicken 1/4 cup olive oil
1 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken stock, hot 4 cups cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan
8 ounces bocconcini mozzarella, halved 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves
Directions Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta and cook until tender but still firm to the bite, stirring occasionally, about 8 to 10 minutes. In a medium bowl, stir together the bread crumbs, parsley, eggs, milk, ketchup, Romano cheese, and the salt and pepper. Add the chicken and gently stir to combine. Using a melon baller (or a teaspoon measure), form the chicken mixture into 3/4-inch pieces. With damp hands, roll the chicken pieces into mini meatballs. In a large (14-inch) skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Working in batches, add the meatballs and cook without moving until brown on the bottom, about 2 minutes. Turn the meatballs over and brown the other side, about 2 minutes longer. Add the chicken stock and tomatoes. Bring to a boil. Using a wooden spoon, scrape up the brown bits that cling to the bottom of the pan. Reduce heat to low and simmer until tomatoes are soft and meatballs are cooked through, about 5 minutes. Drain the pasta, reserving about 1 cup of the pasta water. Transfer pasta to a large serving bowl and add the Parmesan. Toss to lightly coat orecchiette, adding reserved pasta water, if needed, to loosen the pasta. Add the meatball mixture, mozzarella cheese, and 1/2 cup of the basil. Gently toss to combine. Garnish with the chopped basil.

Tribute
A TRIBUTE TO LAWYER EKOW AWOONOR
A
t ENJOY Magazine, we have learnt with deep sadness and grief of the death of distinguished lawyer Ekow Awoonor. His parting has surely left a wide void. With humility, and because we want to console ourselves with the belief that by taking a bow, he was just following the path which Almighty God had laid for him, we shall endeavour to fill the void with fond memories of he whom some have described as a “colourful” fellow. Indeed, he was a big brother, a counsellor, a mentor and simply a friend to many, lawyers and laymen alike, whom he always endeavoured to cheer up with jokes and his easy manner. Ekow Awoonor lived a full life: productive times at the bar both the Ghana Bar Association and the International Bar Association, in the Awoonor Law Consultancy firm as the Principal, with the Ghana Stock Exchange as a consultant and resource person, with Development Partners Limited as a consultant, with UNIDO Ghana as a resource person, with the erstwhile Social Security Bank Limited (SSB) as a director to name just a few! He worked, he laughed, he loved, and he certainly made an impact. Obviously, God wanted him and Awoonor obeyed. To his family, the ENJOY team wishes to offer sincere condolences. May he lie in the bosom of the Lord! e
