Editorial “When a man says yes, his chi (personal god) says yes also” ! Dear Friends, one of you, dearest friends, a very merry Christmas! My prayer is that as we enter this festive season, we not only foster the 'spirit of Christmas' but endeavour to keep it alive in our hearts through next year. This year has not been an easy one. Together we have sailed through difficulties, weathered storms and now we look to the New Year. I want to believe that all that went 'wobbly' will be a thing of the past and I urge you to enter 2015 with confidence, faith and a positive mind. That is exactly the spirit that was evident in abundance at the Cannes Festival Charity Gala Dinner that was held recently to raise funds for the Aid For Needy Children Foundation, fingers crossed that they raised enough to send many children to school next year. Let’s go Christmas! Let’s go 2015! And may we not lose ourselves in the enjoyment!!

Enjoy!!!

RMB Westport is the promoter of The Junction Shopping Centre. Construction began in July 2013 and was completed in November 2014. The development of this shopping centre will definitely make up for the hitherto lack of a high quality shopping centre that caters for the middle to upper income residents of Tema. It is also likely to attract some upmarket residential development to the area. RMB Westport has invested in several other projects in Ghana. It also has active retail and office projects in Nigeria and Angola. e

December in History .........December 1, 1955 Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was placed under arrest for refusing to give up her seat to a white man and move to the back section of a municipal bus in Montgomery, Alabama. The arrest resulted in a year-long boycott of the city municipal bus system by African Americans and led to legal actions ending racial segregation on municipal buses throughout the South. That marked the birth of the modern American civil rights movement.

It Is the Month of Origin: December gets its name from the Latin word ‘decem’ (meaning ten) because it was originally the tenth month of the year in the Roman calendar, which began in March. The winter days following December were not included as part of any month. Later, the months of January and February were created out of the ‘monthless’ period and added to the beginning of the calendar, but December retained its name. e

.........December 2, 1982 For the first time in medical history, a patient received a permanent artificial heart. The operation occurred in Utah, USA and the 61-year old patient, who was near death at the time of the operation, survived 112 days after the operation.

.........December 20, 1989 The United States of America carried out Operation Just Cause, an invasion of Panama in an attempt to capture Manuel Noriega on charges of narcotics trafficking. Eventually, Noriega surrendered to US troops. He was tried, convicted and imprisoned in the United States of America.

.........December 10, 1948 The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of which first and most important article reads: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”

.........December 13, 1835 American clergyman and composer Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He wrote the lyrics for the popular Christmas Carol, O Little Town of Bethlehem. 22 | December 2014 ENJOY No 95

About December: − We frequently abbreviate Christmas as X-mas because of ancient tradition. X is the Greek letter “chi” which is an abbreviation for the word “Christ” in Greek. − The people of Oslo, Norway donate the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree every year in gratitude to the people of London for their assistance during World War II. − St. Francis of Assisi is credited with making the nativity scene part of the Christmas tradition. In 1223, he organized a live crèche to emphasize Jesus's humble beginnings in poverty. − US President Abraham Lincoln's youngest son Thomas, nicknamed Tad, was known as a sensitive youngster. On Christmas 1864, Tad, then 10, took the spirit of the season to heart and invited some street urchins into the White House for a meal. The cooks refused to feed the kids until Tad took up the issue with the president, who ordered that the children be fed. − A village in Peru settles their grudges by fist fighting on the Christmas day, then go drinking and start the New Year off on a clean slate. e

Enjoy Your Life At Every Moment Once a fisherman was sitting near seashore, under the shadow of a tree smoking his beedi. Suddenly a rich businessman passing by approached him and enquired as to why he was sitting under a tree smoking and not working. To this, the poor fisherman replied that he had caught enough fishes for the day. Hearing this, the rich man got angry and said: “Why don’t you catch more fishes instead of sitting in shadow wasting your time”? Fisherman asked: “What would I do by catching more fishes”? Businessman: “You could catch more fishes, sell them and earn more money, and buy a bigger boat”. Fisherman: “What would I do then”? Businessman: “You could go fishing in deep waters and catch even more fishes and earn even more money”. Fisherman: “What would I do then”? Businessman: “You could buy many boats and employ many people to work for you and earn even more money”. Fisherman: “What would I do then”? Businessman: “You could become a rich businessman like me”. Fisherman: “What would I do then”? Businessman: “You could then enjoy your life peacefully”. Fisherman: “Isn’t that what I am doing now”? Moral – You don’t need to wait for tomorrow to be happy and enjoy your life. You don’t even need to be richer, more powerful to enjoy life. LIFE is at this moment, enjoy it fully. As some great men have said, “My riches consist not in extent of my possessions but in the fewness of my wants”. e

Did You Know? • Vlado Taneski was a Macedonian journalist who made a name by writing detailed investigative articles on a serial killer and crimes committed between 2003 and 2008 in Kicevo, Macedonia. Four elderly women disappeared mysteriously in similar circumstances during that period. And through information provided by Taneski, three of the bodies of the missing women were found. Before the revelation of the location of the fourth body, the police were able to identify the real killer who was none other than the journalist himself. • Ants stretch and yawn in the morning as they wake up. Beside many other unusual behaviours he discovered while studying ants, British entomologist (specialist in the study of insects) Derek Wragge Morley found out that when they wake up, the ants stretch their six legs and then open their mandibles as if yawning. • Stubbs, the Mayor of Talkeetna, a 900-inhabitant town located in Alaska, has been governing for the last 15 years. Such longevity is a huge feat for any elected officer, but the amazing thing is that Stubbs is a cat. So, what is the function of Mr Mayor? In Talkeetna, a quiet town that lives on tourism, the position is a symbolic one. Stubbs’s function has therefore been to serve as a tourist attraction. • Running out of fuel on a German motorway is illegal and can result in heavy fines or a 6-month withdrawal of the driving licence. “One possibility is that that the pilosebaceous follicle does not develop properly.”

D

ermatosis Papulosa Nigra is a benign skin condition that manifests itself as black or brown papules on the skin that are flat and raised from the surface. These mole-like bumps are usually between 1-5mm in size. They are typically seen on the cheeks, forehead, neck and torso. For some patients, DPN occurs as under eye moles. Dermatologists are not clear as to the exact causes of Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra. One possibility is that that the pilosebaceous follicle does not develop properlyor it may be linked to a genetic predisposition. Research shows that 40-50% of patients have a family history of this condition. Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra has three levels of severity: Mild- less than 10 papules Moderate-more than 10 papules Severe-more than 50 papules This skin condition occurs in about 35% of the black population and an unknown percentage of Asians. Women are usually affected more than men. Symptoms are apparent starting in adolescence. With age, the papules increase in number and size.

At J'Nissi SkinRepair & Laser Centre, we use Nd:YAG laser for treating Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra and other skin conditions. Older methods include: curettage (scraping), cryosurgery (freezing), and electrocautery (burning). However these modalities pose risks of scarring, the formation of keloids and unwanted pigmentation issues. The 1064nm wavelength is safe for dark skin, the long pulse mode was studied as a way to coagulate the melanin of the dark spots and any blood vessels supporting the growth of the mole-like lesions. This coagulation results in the elimination of the resulting waste tissue by the body’s natural system. This treatment is safe for all skin colours while providing excellent results. DPN is a condition, very common in African skin, and for which a lot of patients seek help, treatment, and skincare advice from J'Nissi for cosmetic reasons.

Medical reports indicate that about 2 to 8% of the caucasian population have moles. Heredity appears to play a part in their formation. Skin tags, warts, cherry angioma, and spider veins can also be present. Monthly self-examination, regular professional in-depth skin analysis and daily sun protection are important!

We can confidently say that our patients are very pleased with the long lasting results. e Bring this copy of Enjoy Accra for your First Free Consulation. We also have available gift sets for christmas.

t was two days before Christmas. Harry, Cornelius, Monty and I were busy building a snowman when Fritz appeared with his little niece Emily and introduced her. “Emily is from the South and has never seen snow before,” Fritz told us. “She doesn’t know much about our winters.” It turned out Emily also didn’t know much about Christmas.”Who is Santa Claus, Waldo?” she asked me, shivering in the cold air. “Santa Claus,” I explained, “brings presents and toys to human children at Christmas time.” “Does he also bring presents to baby animals?” Emily asked. “Well,” I said, “he hasn’t been around this part of the forest for many years. I guess he is too busy visiting all the human children to have much time left for animals.” “Do you think he will come if I write to him?” Emily asked. “I don’t think so,” said Monty. “I’ve never seen him, myself.” “Neither have I,” Harry added, shaking his head. “You see. Santa Claus is only for human children,” Fritz said to Emily. “So forget about the whole idea. Let’s go home now before you catch a cold. e

uavas, mangos and papayas rival any other fruit for top honours in the vitamin and mineral department, not to mention fibre and phytochemicals.

Orange: This delicious and juicy

orange fruit contains an impressive list of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals for normal growth and development and overall wellbeing. Nutrients in oranges are plentiful and diverse. The fruit is low in calories, contains no saturated fats or cholesterol, but is rich in the dietary fibre, pectin. Pectin, by its virtue as a bulk laxative, helps to protect the mucous membrane of the colon by decreasing its exposure time to toxic substances as well as by binding to cancercausing chemicals in the colon. It is scientifically established fact that citrus fruits, especially oranges, by virtue of their abundance in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals, have many proven health benefits.

Papaya: If you only eat one fruit, this should be the one. Why? It contains not only beta-carotene (the precursor to vitamin A) and more vitamin C than oranges, but also more vitamin A than apricots and more potassium than a banana. These nutrients help reduce your risk of: cancer (vitamins A and C), heart disease (vitamins A and C), stroke (potassium), and cataracts (beta-carotene).

Beauty Mistakes That You Didn't Realize T

he wonderful thing about the world of makeup is that there's always something new to learn. Whether it's a new contouring technique or someone who's making waves in the beauty community, we excitedly welcome the latest trends, news, and products with open arms. However, we'll be the first to admit that the sheer volume of information can be daunting and some important tips can get lost along the way. Are you using the right primer? Are you using bronzer correctly? And is powder really necessary? Keep reading to find out the makeup mistakes you've been making — even if you're a pretty professional, you're bound to pick up a new trick or two.

You Were Making Brought to you by Nouvelle Parfumerie Gandour

Not cleaning your makeup brushes. We've all been guilty of this from time to time. Even most makeup artists confess that the time-consuming brush-cleaning process is their least favorite part of the job. But even if you don't care that dirty brushes can make you break out, don't forget that they're affecting your makeup application. Not only will the colors be all muddled together, but a precise technique is rendered way more complicated — the bristles are already overloaded with pigment, blurring that perfect cut crease to oblivion. Putting bronzer on your whole face. If you want to fake a sun-kissed glow, use self-tanner on your face, not bronzer — your pale hairline and neck will be a dead giveaway. Lightly apply a subtly shimmery bronzer to the bridge of your nose, cheekbones, chin, and forehead to mimic a real tan. Matching foundation to the back of your hand. This seems like a no-brainer, but we've all done it. Why would we test foundation on our hands when we'll be wearing it on our faces? Your face and hand are often not the same color as they don't receive the same amount of sun exposure. Try foundation on your jawline for a perfect match.

Sleeping in your makeup. Yes, you know that this is bad. After all, it's probably why the beauty industry invented cleansing wipes! But it doesn't just cause breakouts — falling asleep with a dirty face can make you look older sooner. Makeup settles in your pores and stretches them out, which is permanent over time. Enlarged pores = rough, aged skin. Trust us, if we knew all along that a clean face was the key to keeping our skin dewy and youthful, we would have created better habits long ago. Applying concealer wrong. While it seems like it'd make sense to just apply concealer on top of your dark circles, applying it in an upside-down triangle shape below the eye creates an overall brightening effect that looks much more natural. Applying lip liner just to the edges. Unless your desired look is a throwback to the '90s, don't do this. Even if you apply lipstick on top, your lip color will fade, leaving an unflattering ring around your mouth. Instead, forgo liner entirely or fill in the lines for a durable, last-all-day pout.

beauty tips Wearing waterproof mascara every day. Unless you're a very sweaty individual or a synchronized swimmer, you shouldn't wear a waterproof formula regularly. It's very drying on the lashes. And since these mascaras are hard to remove, you'll probably rub your eyes a lot during the cleansing process and end up losing some lashes. Skipping base coat.

Curling your lashes with mascara on. This is a huge no-no. Not only will you ruin your previously perfect mascara application, but the curler can stick to your gunky lashes and yank them out. Why has Nii decided to go on an indefinite hiatus from software development for photography? He explains that he has stories to tell and he sees photography as a unique way for him to tell those stories: “I express my creativity through photography”. With unconcealed emotion, Nii recounts when, as a little boy (maybe between the ages of 6 and 10), he was convinced that his father loved his two sisters than he did him. “I held on to the belief that I was too stubborn and too naughty for his liking. Not being top of my class certainly made this perception worse”, he recalls. He says it was a terrible feeling to have as a little boy, but then, he came across an old photograph one day. It showed his father carrying him tenderly and snugly to his chest. Then the revelation came that his father, in actual fact, did love him, as much as his sisters! The old photograph had done the magic!

“Taking photos is now a very personal endeavour for me. I get to capture the love between a couple, the pride in a father’s eyes at his daughter’s wedding, the tears of joy of a mother as her son steps on the podium to receive a handshake from the Vice Chancellor.”

Famous Sagittarius: Ekua Zara Ghartey (Kuukua) BORN: November 29th, Addis Ababa

Ekua Zara Ghartey is the Deputy Food and Beverage Manager at the five star Labadi Beach Hotel. She has worked there for the last 22 years. She started her formal education at St Saviours Ikoyi, Lagos Nigeria, she then continued in the International School of Geneva Switzerland and Achimota School. Most of her education was aboard because of her father was in the UN. Her dedication to service naturally extends to the children and less fortunate in society. She believes that in life is not how long you live but the impact you make to the world around you.

Aries 21/3-20/04

From the 4th, there is less emphasis on career goals and more interest in pursuing happiness goals, dear Aries. Even so, career, business, and responsibilities will return to the front burner as December moves forward, with less pressure and more pleasure. Team efforts can thrive this month, and new projects can really take off. The motivation to pursue your dreams and to make plans for an exciting future is with you. Even so, with Jupiter turning retrograde on the 8th, and Saturn/Capricorn strong this month, it's a time for getting real. It's time to realign your thinking and adjust plans accordingly. There may be some waning enthusiasm experienced regarding a romance or creative project, but once you adjust your expectations and take into better account the time you have available. 48 | December 2014 ENJOY No 95

Taurus 21/4-21/05

From the 4th, you have more energy, ambition, and motivation to pursue career and business goals, dear Taurus. With this enthusiasm, you're capable of a lot of hard work. Try to work independently but avoid unnecessary conflicts with authority figures or colleagues. Jupiter has been bringing strong, enthusiastic energy to your home life, family, and domestic projects, and will continue to do so through to next summer. However, Jupiter's retrograde from the 8th is a cue to enjoy the rewards, but to redirect some of this energy elsewhere. This comes at a good time - just when you're naturally focusing on goals and responsibilities outside of the home environment. This is an excellent month, particularly from the 20th, for letting go of limiting circumstances and self-defeating attitudes.

Gemini 22/5-21/06

You'll be dealing with relationship matters, and especially commitments, this month, dear Gemini, but this is also an over-arching theme that is only just beginning for you and will in fact be in force for a few years. A sense of peace regarding work and health routines comes towards the end of the month, as you feel more structured and accomplished. You could find that you're making more concessions than usual and that your agenda takes a back seat to the plans and needs of important people in your life. Mars entering your house of travel on the 4th could stimulate a desire to explore beyond your normal routines. You may be more intellectually active and brave about furthering your experiences. Even so, from the 8th, there can be some waning enthusiasm for schooling, rote learning, and recent projects or new interests.

horoscope

Cancer 22/6-23/07

The month begins with a focus on reorganization, work, and special attention to health regimes, dear Cancer. There is a strong sense that you are on top of the "little things" in your life, and in fact, this will be an overarching theme for a few years, beginning in the last week of December. One to one relationships come into stronger focus the further we move forward in the month. From the 4th, increased motivation is with you to seek out support (financial or emotional), make intimate connections, and move difficult or taboo issues out into the open. You may be doing some investigating. There may be some conflicts experienced over money or resources.

Leo 24/7-23/08 There is a lot to celebrate this month, dear Leo, but you're also getting serious about getting to a better balance between time spent on work and time devoted to leisure activities. From the 4th forward, problems or tensions brewing in relationships are brought out into the open. It's time for some air-clearing. You might also find yourself coming to others' defense more frequently. Powerful energy is with you, particularly from the 20th to January 12th, for close partnerships, education, travel, and publishing. The 4-6 is strong for releases and announcements. Hobbies might turn into work, love becomes a little more serious, and there may be fewer avenues for leisure open to you.

Virgo 24/8-23/09 There continues to be a strong focus on home and family matters this month, dear Virgo, but as the month advances, you look increasingly outside of your circle for feedback, pleasure, and attention. From the 4th and until January 12th, you have increased motivation and initiative when it comes to work, fitness, and health routines. You can be working tirelessly at times, and you have more pride in the work you do, your body/health, and your ability to handle your daily routines well. Even so, this is not the best time for nosy colleagues or pushy bosses/trainers.

Libra 24/9-23/10 Pursuit of pleasure increases this month, dear Libra. You may not be feeling especially disciplined, although as December progresses, circumstances will be such that you'll need to buckle down. You are more inclined to take the initiative in affairs of the heart, and have more courage to create, display, and share your output. The 4-8 is strong for education, communication, and promotion or publishing. You may have recently come up with all sorts of ideas for future endeavors, but if you've put too much on your plate, you'll start to feel it from the 8th, as Jupiter retrogrades. Aim to pare things down or simply stop adding more to your agenda and enjoy what you've already taken on. Focus on a few of your more practical goals.

Scorpio 24/10-22/11 Important changes occur this month, dear Scorpio, as Saturn leaves your sign and Uranus squares your ruler. From the 4th, more attention to home and family is likely, but you may need to deal with excess energy in need of constructive outlets. Strong energy is with you for daily routines, health routines, organization, home and family, particularly from December 20-January 12. Working from home can be successful, as well as on the home. It is a good time to redecorate, renovate, and make organizational improvements. A home gym may be part of the picture. Try not to argue over nothing important. Sagittarius 23/11-21/12

It's a powerful month first for inspiration, feedback, and a sense that you can really make an impact, dear Sagittarius, and then later, for building, settling in, and finding your place. Your ruler, Jupiter, is boosting your yearly Sun transit (until the 21st) with extra strength and power. You're better appreciated right now, and your personality has more strength and influence. Even so, Jupiter is turning retrograde on the 8th, and this can point to some introspection from that date forward. It's natural and very good for you at this time. Reassess personal plans and projects. The 4th is a particularly good date for both love and business, especially creative elements of work and business affairs.

Capricorn 22/12-20/01 Mars leaves your sign on the 4th, and this helps you to pace yourself, dear Capricorn. Even so, you're quick to stand your ground if you feel taken for granted. You may be putting more effort into making money, and there is excellent energy this month for financial projects and initiatives involving home and family. News about health or work around the 6th may be exaggerated, but the truthful elements need assessment in the days following. From the 8th forward, there can be some waning of enthusiasm until you adjust to Jupiter's retrograde energy, which is with us for the coming four months. There may be the need to slow down expansion in a close relationship or with shared finances/debt. Aquarius 21/01-19/02 A lot may be going on behind the scenes, dear Aquarius, but you're not exactly a wallflower this December. Mars begins moving through your sign on the 4th, and until January 12th, you're more than willing to go after what you want, to assert your needs, and to put others in their place if they overstep their bounds. People may not be privy to your deeper feelings, affections, and goals. Look for healthy ways to push the limits, and constructive channels for excess energy. Increased activity is great - it's haste that should be avoided. Brilliant energy is with you for communications, transportation, and learning, and this is especially the case from December 20-January 12. Pisces 20/02-20/03 Major areas of focus this month are career, finances, and friendships, dear Pisces. Mars moves into your privacy sector from the 4th. It can be difficult, at times, to know the source of irritation or anger with this position, but try not to let restlessness drive your behavior. Without self-knowledge, your actions may go unnoticed or unrewarded, and you can feel less effective overall. This is in fact a good time to identify the true source of problems. From the 8th, Jupiter is retrograde in your work and health sector (until April 8th). Spending Christmas With The Family

F

or many families, Christmas is seen as the one time of year when everybody, from your granny to your great uncle Jim, comes together to eat, drink and be merry.

8

Dealing with the PARENTs

8

Your parents will no doubt be used to calling the shots on Christmas day and, after so many years of organising family get-togethers, they’re probably set in their ways.

9

This can be a big shock to your parents’ systems – and their bank accounts. While you might be used to them paying for everything, it’s a good idea to offer to contribute. Why not get the turkey this year? Or simply split the cost of the food evenly between the adults.

9

dg

Remember, while you may be looking forward to spending time with your parents, your partner may be dgstressed out about it. Likewise, you might find feeling the thought of spending Christmas with the in-laws nerve wracking.

Dealing with the kids

For the majority of kids, Christmas is about one thing, and one thing only: presents.

7

However, the anticipation that builds up to the ceremonial unwrapping on Christmas morning can lead to tears and tantrums.

9

dg

Try and spread gift-giving across the day. After the presents have been opened and they’ve had a chance to play with everything, kids can get bored, irritable and start causing mischief. By withholding gifts and handing them out throughout the day, you can keep the excitement going and, hopefully, ensure good behaviour.

9

dg

When the kids do misbehave, it’s unfair for you or your partner to be left to do the disciplining alone. Neither of you want to look like Scrooge. Show a united front and discuss with one another how you plan on dealing with bad behaviour in advance so that no irrational decisions are made. The last thing you want to do is have your kids grounded on Christmas day. e

Take a moment to call or send each other’s parents an email to see if they need help with the big day. Both your parents and the in laws will appreciate the gesture and by communicating and working together, stronger ties can be built between families.

8

If your parents are hosting, the thought of having an extra mouth to feed can often be enough to get them flustered. Factor in any dietary requirements your partner may have and years of Christmas tradition can suddenly go out the window. dg

But when you’ve got so many different characters together in one place, it’s almost inevitable that a row or two will emerge.

Prepare yourselves for what’s coming, and talk to each other about what a typical Christmas with the family is like; the way that your mum and your partner’s mum do things will probably be different.

Ingredients

Cookie Dough Balls » » » » » » » » »

2/3 cup (1 1/3 sticks) butter, at room temperature 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed 1/4 cup applesauce 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon fine salt 1 cup mini semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

For the cookie dough balls: In an electric mixer, beat the butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, applesauce and vanilla together until smooth. Sift the flour, baking soda and salt together, and with the mixer running, slowly add to the butter mixture. Mix in the chocolate chips. Scoop out the batter using a mini ice cream scoop and roll it into balls. Place the dough balls about an inch apart on a baking sheet lined with wax paper and transfer them to the freezer for 30 minutes to let the dough set up. For the dipping chocolate: While the dough is chilling, melt the chocolate wafers and chocolate-almond bark together in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly. Remove the chilled dough balls from the freezer. Using two spoons, dip the balls one at a time in the melted chocolate, rolling them to coat fully. Returned the dough balls to the wax paper-lined baking sheet and refrigerate until set, about 30 minutes. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
