Editor’s Letter My Friends Happy New Year. We hope that the festive season left you with some very happy memories, and we now look forward to Valentines Day. In this edition we explore some ways in which

2014 is the Chinese Year of the Horse, and according to the masters of feng shui it could be a tumultuous year, not least because the horse in question is wooden. It is believed therefore that such a horse is easily broken or could combust. We urge you therefore to grasp the reins well, take control and ride safely. January got off to a great start with CFAO introducing a new brand of car to the Ghanaian market. Citroen was launched with some style at their Accra headquarters in Airport to the accompaniment of a South African band called the Muses. This is one of many celebrations that have taken place already this year. La Palm Casino celebrated 10 years, Millionaires Casino, 8 years and a number of 35th birthday celebrations were held for the beautiful Jiji. We bring you photographs and reports of all of these events. Finally I am very proud to report on a new enterprise that will be coming to your screens shortly. Enjoy Accra are launching their very own TV show. The show is about a Ghana that moves, a Ghana that motivates and a Ghana that is moving ahead. Look out for it. Friends it always a pleasure to share your moments, and remember we are all the stars of Ghana.

Enjoy!!! Don’t forget you can also read the magazine online at: www.enjoyaccra.com

t is the million dollar question for all couples, “what is the secret to a long and happy relationship?” In this month of love with Valentine’s day approaching we turned to social media to explore some of the strategies that couples adopt to strengthen and lengthen their relationships. “We purposely sit next to each other on the couch each night. My father told me to be sure to do this when I got married. It makes it impossible not to physically touch each other!” Stephanie has been married for 18 years. “Remember: Women want to be loved and cherished. Men want to feel respected....even more than they want to feel loved. This may sound odd but it’s true. Don’t emasculate your man. Don’t take your woman for granted. Life gets messy, boring and stressful. Your marriage will have seasons when it’s stronger or when it feels anemic. Whatever you did in the early days that made you laugh together, make time to do those same things after 10, 20 or 30 years. Read to each other from a favorite funny book. Watch a favorite funny movie.” Judy has been married to Jeff for 22 years. “A key to success was my willingness to give up the home decor I had brought into our relationship. I gave up saying and thinking it’s MY SPACE; a brick-and-wood bookcase and a roll-top desk from my youth.” Kofi Manu has been married to Barbara for 24 years (Bronx, NY). “Never discuss sensitive subjects when hungry or tired. Communication is more about listening than talking. I have learnt to hold my silence and

marriage listen to my wife and I tell my wife, if something I say can be interpreted two ways and one of those ways makes you sad or angry, I meant the other one.” Herve has been married to Sheryl for 20 years (Adenta, ACCRA). “We’re best friends. You really have to like each other to last. When the sex becomes less important you better enjoy doing things together (while still doing things apart). We watch movies and travel to far way places together. So we better like each other.” Ralph has been married to Teresa for 17 years. (Facebook) “We made a pact to never fight about money. Financial problems lead to divorce. We didn’t want our relationship to deteriorate over something as inconsequential as money. We’ve been through financial ups and downs, including bouts of unemployment and significant credit-card debt. But we never cast blame and remain calm during financial discussions.” Lisa and Brian celebrate 12 years in June (Facebook). “I once read in an old book on marriage: ‘Always treat your husband as an honoured guest in your home.’ In other words, be on your best behaviour. This has rubbed off on me and he reciprocates. It works! My own saying about marriage is: ‘A good marriage is made up of a thousand small acts of kindness.” Priscilla married for 5 years (Spintex, Accra) “Always find things to laugh about. Laugh together. Times are tough. Tragedy happens in all families. Things will go wrong. But if you find ways to laugh about “it” you’ll form a special bond and can overcome anything!” Dawn has been married to Tony for 32 years (San Francisco, CA). “Couples should have separate bathrooms. It’s not a luxury to have one place in the house that you don’t share. Forty-five years of hearing your partner gurgle his way through the theme song to Bill Dance’s fishing show is guaranteed to start you off in a bad mood. There’s nothing romantic about watching your hubby dearest attack the hairs in his ears or yank out an offending nose hair. His scream is guaranteed to send chills down your spine, and put off your hunger for that yummy meal he’s cleaning up for.” Connie has been married to Fred for 44 years (Bellevue, NE). “Keep a date night. Since we married we’ve maintained one night a month to go out as a couple. When our children were infants (under 6 months) we’d take them along, we didn’t just sit in the house. It doesn’t have to be just you two. Go with other adults or couples. This allows you to have adult conversation and keeps you from hashing over household problems. Unless you have a baby under 6 months, no children allowed. Don’t discuss problems or major issues. The activity doesn’t have to be expensive. Paula has been married to Dan for 26 years (St Dennis, France). “Each person should seek to do good for the other person, instead of fighting over ‘what about me.’ Then the experience is one where each person is giving and serving the other. A win-win solution.” Kwabena has been married to Kels for 32 years (Toronto, CA).

“Facing adversity together has kept us together. Concern for our children has also been a strong force. Once you have grandchildren, the family bond is greatly reinforced.” Chuck has been married to Karen for 41 years (British Columbia, VA). “In the toughest times couples need to remember why they got together in the first place. Put your relationship first. Be open and flexible to change. Adapt. These tidbits sound ordinary but we’ve seen so many relationships break up because one or both partners refused to do these ‘common sense’ things.” Maria has been married to Mark for 24 years. “Divorce is not an option - not to be thought about, said aloud, considered as an answer to a problem. Almost all problems are short-term. Divorce is a long-term answer. And if money becomes an issue, get counselling immediately. It’s not the green stuff, it’s the values that generate issues and cause arguments.” Jane has been married for 18 years “Be passionate, supportive and accepting of what the other person is doing in their personal life. We knew it was important to still be individuals. We each had things we wanted to get done personally. We wanted our work goals not just supported but understood and facilitated. It hasn’t always been easy. Julie has been married to Mark for 15 years. e

Pink carries the connotation of grace and elegance, as well as sweetness and poetic romance. Dark pink roses are symbolic of gratitude and appreciation, and are a traditional way to say thanks. Light pink roses are associated with gentleness and admiration, and can also be used as an expression of sympathy.

Orange roses were seen as a bridge between friendship symbolized by yellow roses and love represented by red roses.

Our nation has lost one of its finest ambassadors. @BBCkomladumor was a broadcaster of exceptional quality and Ghana’s gift to the world. Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama @JDMahama via Twitter I am in deep shock, hearing of the early death of Komla Dumor. He added a different aspect on the world’s developing stories, somehow making many, pleasant and more understandable, even with sensitive subjects. Komla Dumor with Kofi Annan

With Komla Dumor’s sudden and tragic death, Africa has lost one of its brightest young talents. Komla was an inspirational journalist, always determined to find the facts and report on the truth. I shall miss his smile and wonderful sense of humour. May his soul rest in peace. Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General

I remember his coverage at the world cup 2010. The time he took off his shirt to reveal the Ghanaian football team jersey he was putting on. He was a light indeed to many particularly African journalists. He will be greatly missed for his tireless effort in journalism. Anderson Chinorumba, Gaborone, Botswana

It is hard to believe that Komla is no longer with us because, in every way, he was larger than life. He had such an infectious enthusiasm for life, for Africa, for the story. He was an inspiring journalist, both on screen and off it. James Harding, Director of News and Current Affairs

For me Komla epitomised excellence - the thoroughness he put into preparing for each programme. Working with him was a brilliant learning curve. I miss him terribly and I’ll never forget. Thanks KD. Adieu. Peter Okwoche, BBC Focus on Africa TV presenter

ENJOY The Year of the Wood Horse, January 31, 2014 through February 18, 2015, is expansive and exuberant! It rewards honest opinions and disciplined thinking. Social networks will be buzzing. People will be more forgiving and cooperative. It’s a fabulous year for travel, parties, and community events. In wood years, teamwork brings out the best in everyone. You’ll find it easier to craft common sense solutions and have fun in the process. Families working together can attract exciting opportunities in the first half of the year. Later there will be more time to follow your heart. Like many things in life, a bright start will be quickly followed by months where patience and responsibility are your tools for success. Many will be at a crossroads that requires courage, flexibility, and original solutions. Challenges to the way you have always done things do not mean anything is wrong. Wood energy encourages slow growth and practical solutions. This disciplines the exuberant promises people tend to make under the influence of horse. C

ould your child be the next great President, scientist, sportsman? Daniel Coyle, author of the bestselling book, The Talent Code, says you can up a child’s chances immensely by understanding one key thing, “greatness isn’t born. It’s grown”. Thus, achievement is borne of concerted effort, planning, execution, adjustment, and continuation. Talent isn’t written into kids’ DNA, Coyle says. It’s the result of a distinctive and powerful pattern, a pattern that combines three elemental forces: targeted methods of practicing, specific methods of motivating, and coaching. How a child practices, how they deal with failure, how they get praised and how they are criticized all play a part in the likelihood of achieving greatness. “Of course, not everyone grows up to be a Michelangelo or a Michael Jordan,” Coyle says, but that level of genius is not an accident. A distinctive and powerful pattern helps parents and teachers unlock the neurophysiology of learning. Want to create your own hotbed at home environment? Here are Coyle’s six strategies for unlocking children’s talents: 1. Watch for tiny, powerful moments of ignition. When it comes to motivation, we are all born with the neurological equivalent of hair triggers. When a child’s identity becomes intertwined with a goal, the trigger fires, and a tsunami of unconscious motivational energy is released.

46 | Jan-Feb 2014 ENJOY No 86

2. Understand that all practice is not created equal—not by a long shot. Skill-acquisition increases exponentially when we operate on the edge of our abilities, making errors and correcting them—a state called “deep practice.” The takeaway: Children who are able to see errors as fuel for learning, rather than setbacks, are the ones who eventually become geniuses. 3. Recognize that slow practice is productive practice. This technique is common to virtually every talent hotbed, from tennis to cello to math. The reason it works: When you go slow, you can sense and fix more errors, coaching yourself to build a better skill circuit. As one coach puts it, “It’s not how fast you do it. It’s how slow you can do it correctly.” 4. Praise effort, not natural ability. When we praise a child’s intelligence, we’re telling them that status is the name of the game, and they react by taking fewer risks. When we praise effort, however, children become more inclined to take risks, make mistakes and learn from them—the essence of deep practice and learning. It’s an effortbased language. 5. Encourage mimicry. Copying is a neurological shortcut to skill. Vividly imagining yourself perfecting a skill is a great first step to actually doing it, whether you’re writing or dancing. Tim Gallwey, the author/ tennis instructor, teaches beginner students to play a passable game in 20 minutes through mimicry—all without uttering a single word of instruction.

Jabari Akil, counsellor, educational consultant & leadership specialist

“When we praise a child’s intelligence, we’re telling them that status is the name of the game, and they react by taking fewer risks.”

6. Stand back. The kind of deep practice that grows skill circuits can only come from within the child, not from the parent or instructor, no matter how well-meaning. As Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck puts it, all parental advice can be distilled into two essential points: 1) Pay attention to what your child stares at. 2) Praise them for their effort. Revealing to children that talent is built, not born, allows them to look at failure in a completely new way. Failure is not a verdict—it’s a path forward. And mistakes are not something to be embarrassed about. They’re steps on the path to success. Without them, greatness, is not possible. e
