K
-Line Design Limited is a cutting edge architectural practice involved in architectural and interior design for residential, educational, and commercial building projects. They are known for developing elegant, ecological and economic solutions for their customers. Carole Nicod, a graduate of the Swiss Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is the principal architect and is directly involved with all phases from receiving the initial brief through to the design and the contract administration. The firm has two West African branches, Accra, serving the anglophone markets and Abidjan in Coted’Ivoire serving their francophone clientele thereby enabling easy mobility and greater involvement in the sub-region. This mode of operation increases the firm’s accessibility to international institutions, donors, governments and the private sector. The firm has two senior consultant architects working alongside Carole, Yasmina Itani, a BAU certified architect of Lebanese-Polish nationality, and Francis Sossah, a DESA certified architect based in Abidjan. In Accra, K-Line develops projects together with Evans Amfom & Associates, a team of expert engineers and quantity surveyors.

Interview AG: It is my understanding that this project is built to the latest european building safety standards…Can you tell us a bit more about these and their importance?
Alain GBEASOR (AG): The Société Générale (SG) building is a magnificent edifice on the skyline of Accra…Tell us about it?
Which architectural practice or artist inspires your work? And what makes this particular project special for you?
CAROL NICOD (CN): At K-Line Design Ltd we offer a comprehensive range of architectural services including feasibility studies, concept design, working drawings, tendering and construction management and interior concept and design. We work with our technical consultants to undertake both new buildings and alterations and additions to existing buildings. We began work with SG by working on their branches nationwide and creating a livable and efficient work environment.
CN: I need to clarify a certain stereotype about artists and architects, architects are not artists, an artist creates what he feels and sells for a fee to those who can pay, however the architect designs a project with the needs of his client in mind and according to industry standards/objectives concerning ecology, functionality and quality. For architects it’s not about the beauty of the work, it’s about whether it’s right or wrong architecturally.
The Société Générale head office project is a realization of the clients demand for a classy landmark project in the Centre of Accra built to international standards. AG: I hear Architects like artists are inspired by previous works…
My favourite all time architect is Renzo Piano, and I am inspired by his designs with regard to the utilization of space, shades and in the design of museums.
“For architects it’s not about the beauty of the work, it’s about whether it’s right or wrong architecturally.” 8 | March 2014 ENJOY No 87
CN: Architectural culture is constantly evolving and it’s our desire at K-Line to design the best. In all our projects collaboration with specialists ensures that we give our customers nothing but the latest in building norms, such as building isolation, technical conformities, noise reduction, sunlight utilization, light optimization, space use, efficiency with the aim of reducing energy consumption to achieve environmental, ecological and functional quality. Regarding the SG building we had to refer to SOCOTEC in Paris to certify that our project met the european norms regarding safety, energy efficiency and strength. I think I am correct in saying that this building is one of the few in Accra with such stringent certification and that means our partners, the SG, will enjoy their work environment and space and save considerably on energy related costs.
interview
“K-Line is committed to moving beyond the projected designs to suit available spaces and environs whiles respecting nature. AG: What were some of the problems you encountered and what would you do differently if you were to start from scratch? CN: Never underestimate the weather in Ghana, a day I will never forget is the 25th of October 2011. No one expects rain in October but on this day there was a flood that carried away almost all the foundation that had been prepared. It retarded our progress but luckily we had a strong team of contractors
on the ground who doubled their effort to repair the damages. AG: What is the team and what achieve such conceptualization refurbishing)

CN: The central concern of our practice is to deliver excellence, this is achieved through a strong collaboration with clients and specialists ranging from structural
and environmental engineers to cost consultants. K-Line is committed to moving beyond the projected designs to suit available spaces and environs whilst respecting nature and the environment. I would like to take this opportunity to make special mention of Evans Amfom and his team and CONSAR for their great work in seeing this project come to light.

Renzo Piano AG: What are some of the recent projects you have done and future projects in Ghana? CN: Our latest project is the magnificent SG head office towers. This has been one of my favourite projects to date. Partly because we had such an agreeable customer (Mr Gilbert Hie and his entire team) who allowed us to challenge ourselves from beginning to end without restriction. Most of our recent projects have been corporate buildings namely the various SG branches and their head office; the interior design of the Best Western premier hotel; office spaces for CFAO Equipment; complete refurbishment of Total House; relooking the façade of the new Mantrac office building in Kumasi, as well as the Technip Ghana offices. We are also involved in bidding in Cote d’Ivoire on a project for Low Cost Housing and Sustainable Energy Research, two very important aspects of architecture that should be encouraged in Ghana.

AG: Any advice for our readers and the architectural fraternity generally. CN: Architecture is about harmonizing people, objects, spaces and places. It’s not advisable to do a copy paste of drawings for beauty’s sake. I advise student architects to read, learn to improve and gain architectural culture. This is the only way to improve your skills. My advice to your readers, Ghana is in the tropics so insist on the correct choice of materials, isolation and glazing, as these are important to benefit from energy and sunlight. e
“My favourite all time architect is Renzo Piano, and I am inspired by his designs his utilization of space and shade.”
Renzo Piano, Ufficiale OMRI born 14 September 1937 is an Italian Pritzker Prizewinning architect. In 2006, Piano was selected by TIME as one of the 10 most influential people in the world. In August 2013 he was appointed Senator for Life in the Italian Senate by President Giorgio Napolitano. One of his latest projects was to design an airport in Osaka, Japan. Since Osaka had no room for an airport, the authorities decided to build an artificial island for it in the bay. Kansai Air Terminal is a structure with undulating, asymmetrical lines and is capable of handling 100 000 passengers a day and it is the largest building Renzo Piano ever designed. e

GHANAIAN Emblems & Their Symbolism
T
he national symbols of Ghana define the nation, and reflect the country’s history, which is rich in tradition and culture. These symbols include the national flag, the coat of arms, the national anthem and other patriotic symbols and items. We explore some of these items and their symbolism as we mark the independence day of Ghana.
The national flag of Ghana The national flag of Ghana was designed by Mrs Theodosia Okoh and adopted in the year 1957 to replace the flag of the United Kingdom. The flag was officially hoisted for the first time on 6th March, 1957 as part of Independence Day celebrations. This patriotic symbol of Ghana consists of red, golden yellow and green in horizontal stripes with a black five-pointed star in the centre of the golden yellow stripe. THe symbolism of the colours is as follows:RED represents the blood of those who died in the country’s struggle for independence GOLD represents the wealth of the country

The BLACK Star stands for the lodestar of African freedom
The coat of arms of Ghana The coat of arms is an important emblem found on all government letterheads and paraphernalia. It symbolises government sanction and it is found at important government places such as Flagstaff house, the courts and government offices. The coat of arms was designed by Mr Amon Kotei, a Ghanaian, and introduced on the 4th of March, 1957 by Queen Elizabeth II. The coat of arms is composed of a shield, divided
independence into four quarters by a green St. George’s Cross, rimmed with gold. The following are the symbols in the quarters and their meaning. The golden lion of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is present in the middle of the cross, symbolizing the close relationship of Ghana to the Commonwealth and the United Kingdom. The top left hand quarter consists of a linguist staff and ceremonial sword, known as the ‘okyeame’ representing the local administration The top right hand quarter shows a heraldic castle on the sea which represents national government thus the presidential palace in Accra.
“The Coat of Arms was designed by Mr Amon Kotei, a Ghanaian, and introduced on the 4th of March, 1957 by Queen Elizabeth II.”
A cacao tree on the bottom left-hand quarter represents the agricultural wealth of the country. A mine shaft located on the bottom right-hand quarter symbolizes its mineral wealth The black star with a golden border present at the top of the shield symbolizes the struggle for the freedom of Africa and Ghana’s role as the lodestar of the liberation struggle. Two golden eagles hold the shield sitting on top of a ribbon on each side symbolizing protection, strength, and sharp and attentive eyes keeping watch over the country; On the ribbon underneath the eagles, is the motto of Ghana, “Freedom and Justice” which represents national aspirations.
The National Anthem of Ghana: “God Bless Our Homeland Ghana” is the national anthem of Ghana and is also an important national symbol. The music was first adopted in 1957 and the lyrics were adopted in 1966. It was originally written and composed by Philip Gbeho and the words were modified after a coup in 1966. The national anthem was first sung in 1966. e

Mert Caliskan (MC): People like to see changes regardless how regular they are. We try to give that excitement every couple of years and are happy to say that all of our clients notice the new design.
All the pillars and the lower part of the walls have been covered in polished woodwork and the walls have been painted a matching colour.
Although we didn’t make any structural changes at La Palm Casino you will see a big difference. The aluminium entrance door has been replaced with a tamper proof glass door, which has the added advantage of allowing more light into our reception area. The one downside of being located next to the beautiful Atlantic Ocean is the effect of the sea breeze and the salt on our external equipment. It was necessary for us to replace two of the external AC units in the Slots section to ensure that our clients are comfortable. We also replaced the ceiling in our Slots area with tiles. Tips for Healthy,
Beautiful Nails
A
Brought to you by
re you a self proclaimed nail polish junkie? Sometimes an exciting night just consists of a glass of wine and a plethora of polishes…pure joy! But do you get frustrated that your nails keep breaking or how your manicure won’t even last five days? Just like your skin, your nails can dry out and peel, so it’s important to take great care of them. You can keep them healthy by staying hydrated, grooming, trimming, and getting regular manicures and pedicures. Here is a nail care 101 for you to achieve fabulous and healthy nails!
Don’t overload on polish. We’ve all been guilty of this – applying, removing, layering it on thick, and applying polish without a base coat. The number one rule of healthy nails is to never apply the polish on too thick. Too much nail polish can cause staining which leads to yellowing of the nails and also sensitive nails. To avoid this, limit your manicures to no more then 3 times a month and apply a base

coat to your nails every time you paint them. Our personal favorite is Glam’s (no1) Base: Base Coat. It’s more expensive than other drug store base coats but definitely worth it. Also be sure to let each coat dry before you apply the next. Be patient and do it right the first time. Because who has time to go back and fix a nail that smudged?
beauty tips
Dose Up On The Biotin!
This can be such a hard habit to break because you usually bite your nails without even realizing that you’re doing it. But this is a habit that needs to be broken. Plus it’s gross. Who knows what germs you have under your nails? Your fingers are touching everything, so don’t bite your nails! Besides the obvious sanitary reasons, it also weakens your nails and ruins your manicure.
Biotin is an amazing supplement that has many benefits. It keeps your hair, skin, and nails looking healthy and shiny. There are a lot of pricey brands on the market but they all do the same thing, so opt for the middle of the road brand called Nature’s Bounty Hair, Skin & Nails. It works wonders!
Nail polish remover alert!
Yes, you read that correctly. Gel polish is not good for your nails! You have to put your hands under a UV light to let the chemicals harden, and to remove this polish you must soak your nails in pure acetone and then have the polish scraped off. That does some serious damage to your nails. Save yourself time and money and just get a simple manicure instead.
Drugstore polish remover is absolutely fine, but next time you take a trip to the store seeking a nail polish remover, ditch the dollar deals and opt for the more expensive brand. A great one is the Sally Hansen Moisturizing NonAcetone Polish Remover, which is only a couple dollars more. Opt for non-acetone remover as it is gentler on your nails.
Show Your Cuticles Some Love. Make sure to keep your cuticles trimmed and moisturized. We are loving Apricot Oil or Olive Oil. It’s amazing! Apply it to your cuticles every night before bed and it leaves them so moisturized and fresh.
Skip The Gel Mani.
“Plus it’s gross. Who knows what germs you have under your nails?”
Moisturize. Keep your hands moisturized. As a result, your nails will look much better. Remember to apply sunscreen to your hands! Your hands show your age so keep them looking young and spotless by applying sunscreen! It’s never too late, so start now! e

Aries 21/3-20/04 Lowered vitality is possible this month, dear Aries, if you’re not honoring your need for extra rest. It’s not the time to push yourself too hard with your ruler, Mars, retrograde in your opposing sign and several planets moving through your privacy sector. You’re in great need of some form of escape, but choose any escape routes wisely. Relationships are complicated, although connections with family are likely to strengthen in March. Buried problems can surface in partnerships, and resolving them can seem complicated. You may choose to retreat from the pressure and stress. Family and home life can improve. This is a great period for spending more time with loved ones and for efforts to make your home life more comfortable. You don’t need the stress of major renovations, but small improvements can make a big difference. Friends might also be a source of comfort and support, especially around the 14-18. 40 | March 2014 ENJOY No 87
Taurus 21/4-21/05
Gemini 22/5-21/06
While March has a complicated energy attached to it, dear Taurus, there are some bright spots. On social and mental levels, there is good energy for pleasant times and opportunities. Reviving old interests is possible now. Editing, correspondence, learning, writing, and sharing are all favored now. A previously hard-to-grasp subject can become clearer. You could receive good news from friends, or you might feel inspired by something you learn. A learning opportunity may also be in the offing. There can be some tricky matters revolving around work or health matters to deal with, however. Energy may not be at its best for work and health routines, and you could be feeling sluggish or bored. If so, it’s likely more about waning emotional energy - motivation and inspiration - which impact your physical vitality as well. Even so, your reputation with those in authority is likely to be strong.
You’re gaining a good amount of respect professionally and in your community this month, dear Gemini, especially around the 6th and 13-14. Self-esteem is improved - some of the problems you encountered last month will clear up or concern you less. Jupiter moving direct from the 6th will improve finances, business, and close partnerships. Career developments grab your attention this month, and unexpected events trigger new directions. A more creative direction is likely, and you’ll find that it suits you very well. Intuition is beginning to play a strong role in your professional life. Brand-new initiatives are not favored generally speaking with Mars retrograde until mid-May, but this doesn’t mean projects should be suspended or that you shouldn’t work on plans for new endeavors with a launch date later on. In fact, this is a strong period for editing, refining, and fine-tuning work. Some of you could be feeling a little stuck creatively speaking.
horoscope
Cancer 22/6-23/07
Beautiful energy is with you in March for self-expression and spirit, dear Cancer. Fortunate Jupiter in your sign turns direct on the 6th, and its benefits become more explicit. Work that you’ve always wanted might come your way. There can be educational or travel opportunities for many of you, and there can be renewed interest in, and commitment to, health improvement programs . You could be feeling especially happy and healthy, optimistic, and more confident, and that your goals are in reach. Others are likely to find you inspiring. Generally speaking, people are seeing you in a good light. Tricky energy is with us now that Mars is retrograde (until mid-May), however, and for you, this can be experienced with family, authority figures, or involving domestic affairs.
Leo 24/7-23/08 Finances can receive a nice boost in March, dear Leo. It’s a good time for filing taxes, budgeting, and applying for loans if necessary. You are certainly in a more reclusive phase of your life generally speaking, but this month, you are likely to be feeling less weighed down by health problems. You’re also a little less inclined to avoid and escape. You may find the pace of your daily life challenging in March, however. Responsibilities on the home front can be daunting, and finding the time to run errands and handle paperwork may be a challenge. There can also be some disagreements with siblings, neighbors, or acquaintances. Some of you could experience delays or challenges with education or travel plans.
Virgo 24/8-23/09 March brings partnering into strong focus, dear Virgo. While you may not feel in charge, it’s a good time for learning more about the people in your life. You are growing towards a more spiritual or idealistic approach to your relationships, and this is especially prominent this month. Watch that you don’t put too much faith in something that is no longer viable, or give so much that you forget your own needs in the process. If the scales are tipping too far towards a partner, the Full Moon on the 16th will bring the problem to light. Even so, a partner and friends have important and practical feedback for you this month. Putting your heads together can produce solutions to problems.
Libra 24/9-23/10
It’s time to pick up your sleeves and get down to work this month, dear Libra. You’ll have the most success if you bring more creativity to your daily routine or work. Work matters increasingly come into focus, and you could be feeling especially competent and effective in your professional life. Even so, overall, you are likely feeling more introspective. It’s not that you lack confidence, but you tend to need to look within for answers. Questioning your plans is likely, and in fact quite necessary. The temptation to push ahead with personal plans is strong, but circumstances could have you feeling stuck. Watch for temper tantrums - they are unlikely to go over well.
Scorpio 24/10-22/11 Although there is tricky energy with us this month, dear Scorpio, it can also be a whole lot of fun at times. Romantic opportunities abound all month. Getting in touch with your “inner child” is easy now. Your thirst for adventure resurfaces after a period of hesitancy with Jupiter’s direct motion on the 6th. Saturn’s retrograde in your sign can help you to loosen up a little. You are more optimistic and hopeful in March, and you are expressing yourself with more creativity and spontaneity. The retrograde of Mars can be a confusing one for you, however. Occurring in your privacy sector, you can feel driven by unusual yearnings and desires. If you don’t honor your need for down time and rest, circumstances can conspire to remind you or enforce it upon you. Sagittarius 23/11-21/12 There is a lot of charm in your manner and in the ways you communicate this month, dear Sagittarius, but you’re keeping a lot to yourself in this rather introspective month. Family life appeals greatly now, and you’re in need of feeling secure and safe. It’s a good period for refocusing and re-establishing yourself and your goals. Your major focus is on settling in and keeping the peace. Your attention to domestic matters brings rewards and positive feedback. The 16th brings the culmination of an important work project or a scurry of activity on the job. Events occur that highlight your responsibilities in your professional life. Associates and higher-ups are paying attention, so make sure you’re shining. A little bit of healthy showing off won’t hurt at this point. With Mars retrograde until mid-May, your social life can become complicated.
Capricorn 22/12-20/01
While Mars is now retrograde and likely to cause some disruptions and frustrations in your professional life, dear Capricorn, wonderful energy is with you for learning, corresponding, negotiating, communicating, and connecting. With your ruler turning retrograde and your partnership ruler turning direct this month, your best bet is to put more effort into your relationships as well as your negotiating skills. Work on coming to compromises and agreements. Good ideas come to you easily and intuitively in March. Conversations are lively and productive. Students might enjoy improved learning conditions. There can be helpful neighbors, siblings, and classmates in your life this month.
Aquarius 21/01-19/02 Financial, work, and practical matters improve in March, dear Aquarius. You have a good sense for how much to invest and where. Conditions are favorable for raises, loans, support, and taxes. March may seem a little tame for you after a rather dramatic and personally involving month. However, it’s a month of quiet revelations. Delays and complications with travel, educational, promotional, or legal matters are possible this month with Mars turning retrograde (until mid-May). There can be frustrations and conflicts over differences of opinion. Watch your communications more closely, as there is a strong tendency to say things you’ll later regret, or to air grievances that rub people the wrong way.
Pisces 20/02-20/03 There is a lot to love about March for you, dear Pisces. The month begins with a New Moon in your own sign, supplying you with extra oomph for making positive changes. You are in the spotlight, and you’re looking especially good with both your ruler and co-ruler supporting you. You have no shortage of admirers this month. Especially from the 6th forward, you are magnetic and personable. Relationships with children or a lover can improve now. Creative endeavors are favored. You regain your “voice” when Mercury returns to your sign from the 17th. Your interest in some projects you’ve put on a shelf reignites. You spend a lot of time making others happy, but this month is about you - there’s no reason to feel guilty about a little self-interest, which can do you good right now. ENJOY No 87 March 2014 | 41

All the excitement of the Global “Adam Braun, who has managed to build over two hundred schools, and counting.”
Aseye, Student at Lincoln & Adam Braun (Pencils of Promise)
T
here was no doubt that the Global Issues Service Summit (GISS) was the jewel in the crown of Lincoln Community School’s 45th anniversary celebrations. From February 13th to February 15th 2014, over two hundred students and teachers joined forces with the sole purpose of finding innovative and sustainable solutions for some of the most prevalent global issues that the world faces today. A variety of events contributed to this unique happening, from the interesting expert panels, to letting loose and partying hard at the Alliance Fracaise. However there were three things that made the GISS unforgettable: the amazing keynote speakers, participants from thirteen schools from all over Africa, and the Middle East and the “service learning trips”. Everyone was talking about the four keynote speakers. One of whom was leader of Pencils of Promise, Adam Braun, who has managed to build over two hundred schools, and counting. Adam Braun came to talk to the participants and the entire school on Thursday the 13th, 2014 about his experiences with creating and building a “for-purpose” organization as oppose to a “non-profit” organization. Another Keynote speaker was nineteen year old Priscilla Takonda-Semphere, a graduate from the Africa Leadership Academy and author on a mission to change the negative perspective of Africa, one book at a time.

Issues Service Summit!
By Aseye Banini
Over one hundred and fifty students from different schools across Africa and the Middle East descended on Lincoln Community School for the three day conference. All the participants were divided into groups under the names of various Adinkra symbols and tasked with making an informative presentation of any global issue of their choice. Among those attending was a group of 18 students from all over Ghana, who were known as the Golden Hearts. “We are Africa’s change makers, and we need to meet the already change makers to motivate us,” said Akombo one of the Golden hearts interviewed about why he came to the GIISS. On the last day of the GIISS, participants spent the day on a service learning trip exploring how certain people are making the world a better place to live in. The trips on offer included a visit to the Krokrobitey Institute. Students visiting here witnessed items including bags and jewellery being made out of trash and other materials; others went to Nima to create art installations with the NMA Art initiative. All in all, the 2014 edition of the Global Issues Service Summit will be one to remember, and the participants walked away with the important lesson, “Betumi - if not you then who?”. e

Imagine That… Parents Are The Key
“When you point one finger, there are three fingers pointing back at you.” “Children have this uncanny ability to unobtrusively observe, and then mimic what they see, hear, and feel. ”
T
he first time my son did something that was so against my values and expectations, I asked myself, ‘where did he get that from?’ Where did he learn this unwanted behaviour? Well, after blaming God, my wife, and the chemicals in the food, I had to acceptthe truth---he learned it from me! Children have this uncanny ability to unobtrusively observe, and then mimic what they see, hear, and feel. There was another time when I was concerned about the welfare of my father, and was greatly disturbed to say the least. That same son, without any visible understanding of my feelings, laid next to me and began to cry, while minutes earlier he was laughing and playing. He was expressing my emotional frustration and concern for my father. There is a psychoanalytical term for this unconscious process, it is called projective identification. We get rid of the unwanted feelings (projection) and identify them as belonging to someone else (identification). I call it the shame relocation process. The shame relocation process is very telling. It is unmitigated truth about your ineffectiveness as a parent (or spouse). In the case of a parent, it is shifting the influence of a terrible behaviour of a child from you to someone else; hence my saying, God, my wife, and the chemicals in the food influenced my son and not me. Far too often parents point to the ‘problem child’, without adequately looking at themselves, their contribution to the development of unwanted, undesirable, and despicable behaviour. The child is really the ‘finger pointing back at you’, if those fingers could speak they would be saying, look at me, this is what you have created and reinforced. Your socio-economic status or ethnicity are irrelevant, children become what they see, hear, and feel. Children have the propensity to become their parents, good, bad or indifferent. e

Consider this poem, by Dorothy Law Nolte, Ph.D.
Children Learn What They Live If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive. If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves. If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy. If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence. If children live with tolerance, they learn patience. If children live with praise, they learn appreciation. If children live with acceptance, they learn to love. If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves. If children live with sharing, they learn generosity. If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness. If children live with fairness, they learn justice. If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect. If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them. If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.
