Interview Olá, o Brasil, com Alain GBEASOR (Hello, Brazil with AG)
Her Excellency Irene Vida Gala is a brilliant and lively woman who has had a glistening career that has seen her travel the world representing Brazil in various capacities in relations with Africa. Her postings have seen her represent Brazil in her 29 years of professional experience as a career Diplomat in over 30 countries including South Africa, Angola and now, as the Brazilian Ambassador to Ghana. A lawyer by training, Vida talks to us about Brazil and its evolving relationship with Ghana and Africa; the FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil in this special Soccer Fiesta edition of The Enjoy Accra Magazine. Alain GBEASOR (AG): Tell us a bit about Brazil and your country’s engagement with Ghana? Irene Vida GALA (GIV): The Brazil-Ghana cooperation has been on, since the 1st of January 1960 when we opened our first embassy, it is therefore good to say we have been together even before Ghana officially became a republic. Our initial engagements have been bilateral cooperation in the fields of Agriculture and trade thus Cocoa and Coffee trade. Since the year 2003, we have moved unto the next stage of our South – South bilateral cooperation which have seen exchanges in Sports and Education, Capacity Building, Peer to Peer collaborations, Business to Business Alliances. Brazil has the benefit of consistency in development policy for many years and this consistency creates a credibility which encourages an exchange of Good Practices and references with fellow developing nations in Africa. AG: What are some of the projects being undertaken by your country in Ghana? GIV: Due to our South – South collaborations there are many exchanges and support in Good governance which are not considered as projects per say in the normal sense of it. For instance there are many ministerial level capacity building workshops being held between Ghana and Brazil to help enhance the Leap initiative currently been tried by Government of Ghana to help the poor and underprivileged in the society; 10 | April 2014 ENJOY No 88
Brazil has had a similar system in place for many years and for a great number of our underprivileged people. AG: In what field of the economy are most Brazilian businesses involved in Ghana? GIV: In 2013, the GIPC figures, put Brazil as the 5th Major Investor in the Ghanaian Economy. Brazilian investment in Ghana are mostly in the fields of • •
Construction – Roads , Housing and Airport Agriculture – Rice Production, Cashew Exportation
Brazil investments are centered on activities that bring support and improvement in livelihood to the Ghanaian people that is the essence of the South – South Cooperation. AG: What is Brazil’s preparedness towards the global Soccer fiesta and what should people expect differently from previous World Cups? GIV: In Brazil, there is an adage that soccer is a religion not a sport. So for a soccer nation like Brazil to host the greatest soccer festival on Earth, you should expect nothing else but an event of great proportions and culture. In order to have a very successful and incidence free
interview
“Brazil investments are centered on activities that bring support and improvement in livelihood to the Ghanaian people that is the essence of the South – South Cooperation.” GIV: Ghanaian fans just like their Brazilian compatriots are fanatics of football and should very quickly feel at home in Natal, Fortaleza and Brasilia. Brazil like Ghana is a tropical country and once the fans are willing to discover, they will come across many varieties of foods such as Fufu, Gari. It’s useful to note that Brazil is the biggest African Country outside Africa, with a population of over 51% African descents, the Ghanaian fans should be at home but they should respect the instructions and boundaries set by the local authorities for their own safety. I will advise them to enjoy their time in Brazil, try dancing, eat the local foods and of course visit the beach.
World Cup, improve tourism infrastructure in preparation to receive soccer lovers from all over the world the Brazilian government and other private initiatives has invested considerably towards Security, Logistics, Stadia, Airspace Security, Medical and Hospitality centers. In the field of transport alone 70,000 new flights have been given the go ahead to fly into and around the country. There have also been investments in Human resources capacity building through several professional training programs among which is ‘Olá, turista’ (Hello, tourist), with an investment of over 13.92 million reais (US$ 7.7 million). The program will make cost-free English and Spanish lessons available to approximately 80,000 workers and affiliates who will work directly with tourists during the period of the tournament namely Taxi drivers, Police, waiters and local authorities among others. AG: Many Ghanaians are eager to go and cheer the Black Stars in Brazil, what should they look out for and what is the procedure?
I will urge all who want to be in Brazil to begin their visa preparations early enough and remember the World Cup VISAs are free but no TICKETS no VISAS. VISA TYPES Spectators with purchased tickets to attend the FIFA World Cup 2014 only:

AG: What have been some of the high moments in your career and what is your main vision for your tenure as ambassador in Ghana? GIV: As career diplomat, I dedicated the greater part of my career to Brazil – Africa relations, therefore my appointment as Ambassador to Ghana was indeed a special moment in my life and my career. Another moment that I consider strongly, though more of a low moment, that has motivated me and pushed me to achieve even more, was in Angola in 1994 when we lost two young Brazilian Soldiers to Malaria. I have kept on paying tribute to them and their sacrifice to Brazil and Africa. My Vision as ambassador is to create and enhance the awareness and cooperation currently existing between our two countries. Ghana is a role model in Africa for democracy and diversity living together as one; it’s in my interest to sell Ghana as an image of hope and development to engage more Brazilians to invest in Ghana and Ghanaian entrepreneurs to invest in Brazil. My vision for Ghana is to place it as the best destination for investment in Africa and encourage our ongoing cooperation in Education through Student and University exchanges as well as in Social development. AG: You are the highest Brazilian authority in Ghana, say a few words of support for the Brazilian community that lives here and our readers? GIV: My advice to Brazilians living and working in Ghana is that with me, they are all ambassadors and together it is our responsibility to increase and create the awareness of Brazil as a good destination for Collaboration and South – South cooperation. Brazil has evolved some policies that could very easily work in Ghana to solve some social problems and we must share in that mutual development. See you in Brazil and I Hope GHANA or BRAZIL wins the World Cup. e

story time:
“My strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.”
Samson and Delilah
he Samson and Delilah story is one of the most famous stories in the Bible. It’s a story of Love and Betrayal of two people from opposite sides of two warring nations.
T
subdued.” Samson whose source of strength was to be kept secret answered thus “If anyone ties me with seven fresh thongs that have not been dried, I’ll become as weak as any other man and thus subdued.”
Samson was of the tribe of Dan, adjacent to the Philistine territory in present day Gaza. He was the first Nazirite specifically mentioned in The Bible and the last of the judges mentioned in the Book of Judges. Samson was blessed with a tremendous strength which he used to defend his people for 20 years and over.
Thinking that was the secret to his strength, the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh thongs that had not been dried, and she tied him with them. With men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” But he snapped the thongs as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.”
Delilah on the other hand, was a Philistine woman who lived in the valley of Sorek which runs from Jerusalem to the Mediterranean Sea south of Joppa present day Tel Aviv in Israel. The Philistines had lost many men to the might and strength of Samson and were willing to do anything to conquer and subdue him. When news broke that Samson had fallen in love with Delilah, a Philistine woman, the rulers of the Philistines went to her and said, “See if you can lure him into showing you the secret of his great strength and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver.” “So Delilah said to Samson, “Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and 20 | April 2014 ENJOY No 88
Delilah was fuming and threw tantrums saying to Samson, “Until now, you have been making a fool of me and lying to me. Tell me how you can be tied. When Samson realized she will not take a no for answer, He again told her, “If you weave the seven braids on my head into the fabric on the loom and tighten it with the pin, I’ll become as weak as any other man.” So while he was sleeping, Delilah took the seven braids on his head, wove them into the fabric and tightened it with the pin. Again she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” He awoke from his sleep and pulled up the pin and the loom, with the fabric.” “Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love
Kids story you,’ when you won’t confide in me? This is the third time you have made a fool of me and haven’t told me the secret of your great strength.” With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was tired to death.” “So he told her everything, the secret he had sworn not to disclose, “No razor has ever been used on my head,” he said, “because I have been a Nazirite set apart to God since birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.” That very day when Delilah realized she had been told the real secret behind his strength, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, “Come back once more; he has told me everything.” So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands. Having put him to sleep on her lap, she called a man to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him.” “Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you! He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that The Lord and his strength had left him. The Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza. Binding him with bronze shackles. They locked him up in their prison as trophy for so long and gave him the hard chores of grinding in the prison. As the days and weeks went by, the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.
men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. Samson prayed to The Lord “O Sovereign Lord, remember me. O God, please strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.” Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!
Samson pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers of Philistine, their people and Samson Himself. Thus the story is told of Samson killing many more Philistines when he died than while he lived. Samson’s family came for his remains and gave him a Soon the festival of great sacrifice to Dragon the befitting burial for the man who defended Israel from Philistine god came and they celebrated, singing and the Philistines. Samson was brought out and paraded on the streets; when the people saw him, they praised their god, saying, “Our god has delivered our enemy into our hands, the one who laid waste our land and multiplied our slain.” The Philistine elders in high spirits, shouted, “Bring out Samson to entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and made him perform for them. When they stood him among the pillars, Samson said to the servants who held his hand, “Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them.” Now the temple was crowded with

Taurus 21/4-21/05
Gemini 22/5-21/06
April is a powerful month that tends to bring buried frustration, resentment, and needs to the surface with great force, and possibly in disruptive ways, dear Taurus. Tempers can flare at work or school, schedules are interrupted, and for some of you, nagging health issues can disrupt the flow of things. As well, there is a lot of stress and strain happening behind the scenes. Old problems can resurface, frustrations with people and situations that you’ve been tolerating can now seem unbearable, and neglected health matters might come to a head. Be more cautious and attentive, especially on the job. Your saving grace this month involves friends, teams, and groups the keys to managing stress, and the providers of escape routes and release from daily pressures. The 10-11 and 1720 bring wonderful social opportunities. As the month moves forward, you begin to feel more effective, independent, and courageous.
April is a complicated month, dear Gemini, and for you, the difficulties tend to center around money, friends, lovers, and creative projects. Ironing out problems, particularly when it involves others’ issues, can be challenging this month. If you’re overconfident about your ability to make money or blinding yourself to problems you might have in the future, then you might take foolish risks. Impulsive spending, especially if you’re borrowing from your future, should be tamed this month. Some of you could be facing extra expenses related to children or friends and lovers. However, try not to be pressured into spending more than is necessary chances are, you don’t need to go over the top. Some of you could experience a conflict over someone else’s resources or money, or there can be power-related undercurrents that disrupt a friendship. Your relationships are likely to be stormy this month, and quite confusing at times.
horoscope
Cancer 22/6-23/07
There can be a lot of attention to professional and public matters this month, dear Cancer. Your drive for authority over your own life is strong now, and you want to follow your own rhythm. However, you are in high demand, and your responsibilities to others can complicate the freedom and mobility you crave. Be careful not to instigate sweeping changes only for the sake of change, as impulsiveness runs high in April and you may regret decisions later. There can be times this month when a partner, family member, parent, or authority figure feels threatened or is put off by your newfound displays of freedom and independence. A partner may be coming down on you, perhaps fearing they will lose you. People tend to be pulling you in different, and often opposing, directions.
Leo 24/7-23/08 You have your eye on the biggest prize, and are not content with mere routine this month, dear Leo. However, there can be a lot of restlessness in April. An overloaded, demanding schedule is possible, but even if you’re not in big demand, there is a tendency to resent being tied down so that it can be difficult to stay on top of daily work and responsibilities. Education, travel, responsibilities to others, or inner restlessness can interfere with your work or routines. While your tendency is to play a supportive role to others, if taken too far, you will need to draw some boundaries when it comes to your energy and time. Resentments can build and the come to a head around the Lunar Eclipse on the 14-15.
Virgo 24/8-23/09
The month can have a way of bringing all sorts of buried frustrations up to the surface, dear Virgo, but it also has its very bright spots. There may be difficulties with a child or lover who is at odds with the energy and time you are pouring into your friendships and causes, or there can be extra expenses involved with either. Try to settle as many debts as you can and avoid taking on more. Ownership matters can be a source of conflict this month, or debts owed can be overwhelming now as they come due. You could be dealing with erratic sources of income or cash flow. Watch for gambling or risk-taking with money or a partner who may be doing same.
Libra 24/9-23/10
April is a complicated month, dear Libra. Built-up anger and frustration tend to come to a head, especially around the Lunar Eclipse in your sign mid-month and the 20-23, when retrograde Mars in your sign forms a Grand Cross. Most importantly, this is a time to be especially careful and vigilant when it comes to health and general safety. There may be some resistance from a boss, co-worker, partner, or family member. People may be reacting to your sporadic assertiveness, and it’s important for you to try to release frustrations in healthy ways. Be willing to implement needed changes in your life, both on the inside and out. Many issues are being forced to your attention so that you can finally deal with them.
Scorpio 24/10-22/11
Capricorn 22/12-20/01
Your private life receives top billing much of the month, dear Capricorn, although you’re in demand and pulled in many different directions. You tend to be sentimental or nostalgic now. If things are out of whack on the home front, you will do whatever you can to create a peaceful and stable atmosphere, although this may not be easy. You might focus on ways to earn money in or from your home. Until the 20th, your focus is strong on inner psychological growth, after which you are more able to let your hair down and enjoy some “play” time, when friendships and casual connections can offer much enjoyment. April is better for setting goals and visualizing instead of taking aggressive action.
Aquarius 21/01-19/02
This month, any tension you’ve been feeling with hectic schedules and demanding daily life can come to a head, dear Scorpio. You quickly become bored with going through the motions of daily routines, but a new position or task, or an increased work load, keeps you especially busy. Watch for provocative or temperamental comments, which can get you into trouble with co-workers, neighbors, and relatives. You have a low threshold for boredom, and while inner restlessness can certainly push you to make important changes, it can also attract some trouble if you are living on auto-pilot and not consciously directing your energies into productive channels. From the 17-20, love, social, financial, and learning opportunities abound.
April promises to be an especially busy month, dear Aquarius. You’ll have plenty on your “to do” list, but you may need to cut down that list in order to gain some peace of mind. As long as you don’t succumb to tension, it can be a pleasant month in which you make new contacts and learn a great deal about the people in your life. Intellectual ties in existing relationships assume more importance to you than usual. The 17-20 may bring a surprising communication about finances, and an unusual romantic or creative opportunity. Imaginative undertakings could boost your income in April. The month is also notable for attracting rewards or gifts. Your intuition for making money is topnotch.
Sagittarius 23/11-21/12
Financial security and enjoyment of the good things in life are more important to you than usual this month, dear Pisces. Financial activity, including pressures or concerns, can be a strong focus this month, but so can comfort levels and goals that help you to feel more secure. Facing up to recent excesses may be an issue. Avoid unnecessary displays of rebellion in your relationships. Watch also for a tendency to gamble or lend indiscriminately. Some of you will be seeing some real conflict between your own values and the values of friends or groups, and may be feeling undervalued at times. You could be dealing with changes in business income or problems with an associate or friend, but while there can be some social challenges this month, a friend may be integral in achieving your ENJOY goals. No 88 April 2014 | 43
As the Sun transits Aries for the first three weeks of April, dear Sagittarius, your focus is on creating, loving, and self-expression. This year, there are some complicated configurations to deal with as you pursue your desires. Impulsiveness and arrogance can be things to watch out for, especially when dealing with money, lovers, and friends. Watch for hasty actions all month, as they have a way of turning around on you. You may be especially attracted to speculative ventures. While money matters can be up and down, some of you could gain material benefits from, or for, real estate or family in the last week of April. Love matters and your social life tend to be laced with drama, and romantic inclinations run high in April.

and respect.
T
You see, “mothers” love to encourage and empower others to reach their goals, ambitions, and dreams. I have had the joy of working with women and their families on three continents. From one culture to another, I have seen when mothers are strong on, their children, regardless of the challenges they face, they tend to be more stronger. When they are resilient and filled with faith, their children are likely to be strong and filled with faith. As an observer of human history, I must say, that there is no other pursuit for a woman more ennobling and glorious than that of a mother. It doesn’t mean she is sequestered to that lone position, but that function is so invaluable to humanity. Mother, defines a divine nature that is beyond our contemporary understanding and respect. These women can do more than any other to cure the problems that exist in our society. Men of war and hegemony, have a long history of being ‘afraid’ of real power that mothers possess. They have more power than they themselves realize, they are the leaders of leaders. Who has more influence on a man than his wife or His mother! The word best describes leadership by a woman is mother. Is there any influence more enduring than a mother’s shepherding of her children along the path of life? A mother’s voice is unlike any other because a mother’s influence is endless. e Mom, thank you for everything!
here aren’t enough words to encapsulate the awesomeness, magnificence, uniqueness, strength, splendor and love of a mother! Mothers are a very special breed of a human; think about who will do ALL that a ‘mother’ does, with the care and consistency? It has been said, “the ‘mother’ is the foundation of the nation, she nurtures the child in every conceivable way”, think about that for a moment. If you’ve had a mother or a mother-like figure in your life, she has shaped and/or influenced your choices in spouse, profession, habits, and overall lifestyle preference. She is your first and lifelong teacher.
Look at these ‘mothers’ and their lifetime universal influence: a. b. c. d.
Eve or Kavah- the beginning of beginnings, without her no Jews, Christians, or Muslims! Sara, Rebekah, Rachel, Martha, etc. (too many to name) without these moms who would raise future kings and prophets! Mary (mother of Jesus) - I could imagine she supported him in his righteous development. Christians would not be without her. Aminah– I am sure the mother of Mohammed, peace be upon him, taught him the value of charity and helping those less fortunate.
