Editor’s Letter My Friends Should there be one thing you and I are certain about, it can only be the fact that we all come from a woman, and you will

www.enjoyaccra.com

agree with me that no other name shall ever be as grand as this one: “Maman”, “Mum”, “Mother”, “Mama” or “Maame”. Mothers are celebrated on a special day once a year, and that

is only right! The question, perhaps, ought to be: only one day in the year… is that sufficient for expressing all that we want to

tell Mum? Maybe it wouldn’t be too much to have one quarterly

celebration? For now, the whole Enjoy Accra team gladly joins me to wish you, Dear Mums, HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

For the 2014 Mother’s Day celebration, we have decided to spotlight these women who, even on Mother’s Day, their only

dedicated day in the year, shall head for the market to work as usual so that we, their children, their brothers, their husbands, can have those fresh items that we

so much enjoy: yes, let’s give due honour to the Makola Ladies. Our reporter went downtown Accra and he brings to you the opinions of Dede, Maureen, Theresa, Maa Felicia, etc. Do read on!

Another great mother in the limelight this month is Tine Tagbor aka Cocoaline, who takes so much

delight creating luscious chocolate recipes for our taste buds. And you will appreciate even more her skills when you realize that Cocoaline has chosen to push her hard-earned degrees — Master’s in

Development Project Management and Master’s in Business Administration — in the background to privilege the Art of chocolate recipes… much to our greatest enchantment!

Enjoy!!! Don’t forget you can also read the magazine online at: www.enjoyaccra.com Dominique Paravicini Editor

cobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI), the leading independent panAfrican bank with a presence in 35 African countries, has opened its first Digital and Financial Services Advisory Centre in LaboneAccra, to enable customers who are tech-savvy to experience real-time digital transactions. The unique feature of this digital centre is the fact that it has no tellers. Equipped with advanced technology software and hardware, it is a complete self-service facility that puts the control of banking into the hands of the customer virtually, with little or no interface from staff except on a need to know basis. Being the first of its kind to be set up in West Africa, Ecobank’s Digital Branch and Financial Advisory Centre is changing the landscape of

What Do You Care For, Mother?

M

other, what do you care for, today?” Simple question, right? Well, simple yet so significant! You will be saying that on this distinctive day, Sunday, 11th May 2014, dedicated to the one person without whom life would never have been possible for anyone on earth. You shall ask such question because mother must be made to feel special on that day.

And mother will gladly answer the question, of course. But guess what? She will be asking herself many more about you, about your wellbeing, about your safety, about your level of happiness, about the amount of peace of mind you enjoy in life… Such is mother that you will always remain her baby, no matter how old you are!

M

other’s Day is here again! The young and the old all from over the world are making arrangments for this celebration honouring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. Stepping out of the box, Enjoy Accra has been sampling the opinions of those famous women in the renowned Makola market in downtown Accra on both the significance and the relevance of the Mother’s Day celebration.

Makola Ladies and Mother’s Day At Makola, we wanted to focus principally on those marvelous women without whom the rest of us would find it difficult to taste fresh tomatoes, fresh fish, fresh lettuce, etc. At Enjoy Accra, we affectionately call them the Makola Ladies. But they would not grant us an interview: “Market is too bad now. Please, another day…”, was the reason for shunning a journalist. It’s a pity, isn’t it?

Nonetheless, perseverance eventually paid. We managed to have some lovely Makola ladies speak their minds. Although most of them do not have an idea what date 2014 Mother’s Day falls on, they hold strong views on the issue and seem to be looking forward especially to the emotional treats which usually come along with its observance.

“Mother’s Day is not only about our biological mothers, but also about any other woman being a mother figure in our lives.”

Dede Hear Dede: “Mother’s Day is not only about our biological mothers, but also about any other woman being a mother figure in our lives”. Her daughter always strives to make the day memorable for her each year, she avers. 12 | May 2014 ENJOY No 89

For Gifty, Mother’s Day is to be “cherished by everyone because mothers are supposed to be given the respect they deserve for taking care of their children, for being responsible and for being there for us always”. However, Gifty does not lose sight of business and she is comfortable with people helping business to boom by bringing on board new ideas in terms of packaging gifts to be presented on Mother’s Day. She is more content with the observance of the day as patrons including men do troop in for shopping for the occasion.

Gifty

mothers interview Doreen has “plenty of mothers” to celebrate on Mother’s Day. For her, it ought to be observed because mothers are “very dear to our hearts”, in any case much more than fathers. To mark the day, Doreen is planning to buy a new phone for her mum to replace the old one she has been told is now out of order. Besides, she thinks it is good that business has taken over the celebration of mothers because some people come to her shop purposely for gift items to present on the day.

Irene

Dorean Irene would not confine the Mother’s Day celebration to women who have children but would extend it to “all women, [our] mothers, sisters, any woman at all”. Of course, mothers are still special so taking them out and treating them to excellent food and sightseeing is very good. Since her mother is late, her boss in the shop stands tall in terms of showing motherly care to her, and should Irene have the wherewithal, she would go as far as surprising the kind shop-owner with a car gift! “Even when you are mature and married, you are still a mother’s child and she will never stops taking care of you.”

Muye sees Mother’s Day as a day to celebrate the “achievements” of mothers. Hear her: “Even when you are mature and married, you are still a mother’s child and she will never stops taking care of you”. The day is the more interesting as “all the immorality we witness on other celebrations never occurs for Mother’s Day”. The day should even be declared a public holiday, she asserts. “Cherished by everyone because mothers are supposed to be given the respect they deserve for taking care of their children, for being responsible and for being there for us always”

“Mother’s Day ought to be celebrated for “[our] children” to thank mothers for their sufferings.”

Mercy feels it in the market when Mother’s Day is around the corner because people, especially men, patronize her goods — brassieres, pants, etc. — for the women in their lives for the occasion. She thinks Mother’s Day ought to be celebrated for “[our] children” to thank mothers for their sufferings.

Mercy Lilian thinks it would not be necessary for Mother’s Day to be declared a public holiday because even on that day, women still work at the market. For now, the impending observance does not impact on her business as patrons are yet to shop for the day. Lilian would be happy if her little kids would mark the day simply by “wishing her happy Mother’s Day”.

Maa Felicia 14 | May 2014 ENJOY No 89

Lilian Maa Felicia is looking forward to her grown-up children coming to her end on that day so that they would spend the day together. “They usually come with food and we enjoy a lot”, she says. She would be in support if Mother’s Day should be declared a public holiday. “She would be in support if Mother’s Day should be declared a public holiday.”

mothers interview For Hannah, you take the opportunity to show appreciation to your mother. As a mother herself, she would love it if her husband should stand in for their under-aged child and tell her sweet things on Mother’s Day since the child cannot speak for himself yet. But no! Mother’s Day ought not to be a public holiday. Theresa would surprise her mother this year with something special and that is exactly what she expects from her own child when she has one. As a business lady, she likes the Mother’s Day tide because she has noticed people call in a lot to buy her stuff on the occasion. Yet, she would support a public holiday declaration for Mother’s Day. e

Theresa Dear readers, aren’t we right at Enjoy Accra referring to them as Makola Ladies? Anyway, since the very first celebration in 1908 — when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia, USA — a lot has sunk in the water under the bridge but the heat of the Mother’s Day observance is not about to subside. How can it, when Mother is so special a person today and tomorrow?

Hannah “As a mother herself, she would love it if her husband should stand in for their under-aged child and tell her sweet things on Mother’s Day since the child cannot speak for himself yet.”

Do You Know… Mother’s Day is not observed on the same day around the world. Though majority of the countries put it on the second Sunday of May, it falls on at least thirty different dates in the year depending on the countries. In the phrase Mother’s Day, “Mother’s” is a singular possessive, for each family to honor their mother, not a plural possessive (Mothers’) commemorating all mothers of the world. by Juanito Mario DE MEDEIROS

Cocoaline, Ghana’s Lone Professional ‘Chocolatier’ Dazzles

T

ine Tagbor is a Ghanaian who lived the greater part of her adult life in France and holds two Master’s in Development Project Management and Master’s in Business Administration. Her professional life in France for over 20 years had been in the field of social empowerment through education and development. After several years of training people, she decided to change tack and explore her passion, chocolate making. Tine is one of the few if not the only French CAP Certified chocolatiers in Ghana; a visit to her cozy outfit in Airport West shows chocolate delicacies of unimaginable types, shapes and aromas - that only an expert could craft. As a chocolatier, Tine makes all sorts of confectionery from chocolate. Chocolatiers are distinct from chocolate makers, who create chocolate from cacao beans and other ingredients. Quizzed on why such a profession, Tine intimates that she has always been intrigued by chocolatiers and their art and the way they craft such incredible delicacies from cocoa. On why she uses Cacao Barry in her formulations, she says over the years, Barry Brand has advanced in creating flavours that blend the essence of their varying regional and national cocoa species. These products have medicinal properties that are used to treat an array of ills. She explains that Cacao Barry works best for her because most of the time its formulation contains at least 70 percent cocoa solids, which is healthier. Cocoa has many benefits including assisting with improved cardiovascular, visual and cognitive functions, and even improved skin but like all good things, it must be enjoyed in moderation. Cocoaline currently produces goodies for events, or corporate gifts and are ready to blow your mind with the designs that they craft. Contact: Tine: 0249 048763 Email: coacoaline@gmail.com

Celebrating

The Aboakyer Festival In Winneba By Alain A. GBEASOR

T

he Aboakyer festival is a deer hunting festival celebrated by the people of Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana. The hunters catch their prey by hand and alive before sacrificing it to their gods. The deer hunting festival is organized in honour of Penkye Otu, the tribal God of Winneba. Some 300 years ago when the first settlers arrived at present day Winneba, the people believed this god was their protector. Originally the people gave thanks with a human sacrifice from the royal family. With time the tradition was altered and they substituted a live leopard. As capturing a live leopard was resulting in many casualties the people 32 | May 2014 ENJOY No 89

pleaded with the gods to accept a deer instead of a leopard. The hunting competition is between two groups in Winneba, the Tua-fo and the Dentsi-fo. These two groups compete to be the first to catch a deer. The festival begins in the evening with a brass band marching through the streets of Winneba, singing and dancing. The morning after the procession, both groups march to Penkye Otu’s shrine to have roots, invocations and enchantments and herbs made for them to ensure their safe return from the hunt. They smear themselves with clay, and wear their protective charms and amulets. They then march off to see the Paramount Chief, after which the hunt is officially declared open. The group

The Priest and The Golden Stool “The oath also prevented the Ashanti from fighting the Nzema and allows Ashantis and Nzemas to marry each other with one single plantain as a dowry.”

T

here are many great stories of brave and influential people who have walked the surface of this land which is today called Ghana. The Ashanti Kingdom, is one of the many kingdoms that make up our country and we explore its unique story. In this story we look at the tale of the golden dtool and the great priest Okomfo Anokye. Okomfo Anokye was a priest, statesman and law-giver. He occupies a revered position in Ashanti history as a cofounder of the Kingdom Ashanti, and in establishing its constitution, laws, and customs. Okomfo Anokye was born in Awukugua-Akuapim,In the Eastern Region in the late 1600s. His father, Ano, and mother, Yaa Anubea, were both from Awukugua-Akuapim, part of the Ayade tribe. It is believed that at the time of his birth, his two palms were firmly held together and could not be separated. Curious to know what he was holding in his hands, his parents tried to separate both palms but to no avail. When he was about two years old, his palms opened and they found totem poles believed to be from the gods. His parents and family believed he was sent by the gods to lead the Okere people. Later in life, he became a priest and was given the title “Okomfo”. His full name became Okomfo Anokye. His ancestral home is opposite the Awukugua Chief’s 34 | May 2014 ENJOY No 89

kids story

The Denkyira were at war with the Ashanti King Osei Tutu and when they heard of his prowess they requested his assistance. With Okomfo Anokye’s help, the Denkyira successfully defeated the Ashantis. King Osei Tutu heard of Okomfo Anokye role in their defeat and the subsequent disagreement of Okomfo Anokye with the Denkyira King at the time, and he requested Anokye’s aid. Anokye went to visit Osei Tutu’s in the capital of the Ashanti Empire, with a group of his tribesmen and women. To win the war against the Denkyira, required a powerful unity that transcended the particularism of the Ashanti segments, and Anokye employed not only the political influence of his priesthood but also the spiritual ties it engendered to transform the loose Ashanti alliance into a strong union in 1695. The war with Denkyira from 1699 to 1701 went badly at first, but when the Denkyira army reached the gates of Kumasi, Anokye’s “incantations” supposedly produced defections among their generals. The Ashanti broke the Denkyira hegemony and captured the Dutch deed of rent for Elmina Castle. This gave the traders of the empire access to the African coast and involved them henceforth in the commerce and politics of the coastal slave trade. Together with the King Osei Tutu, Okomfo Anokye established rituals and customs of the Ashanti state to diminish the influence of local traditions. Kumasi was then designated as the Ashanti capital. They then established a state council of the chiefs of the pre-existing states admitted to the union and suppressed all competing traditions of origin and re-organized the Ashanti army into a strong force. King Osei Tutu gave Anokye a portion of land to settle after he helped them to defeat the Denkyira and named it Nzemaa. After the Ashanti defeated the Denkyira, Okomfo Anokye brought down the golden stool (Sika ‘dwa) from the sky and gave it to the Ashanti King and his people as the royal and divine throne of the Ashanti people. He also put a sword on the ground as a symbol of unity between the Nzema and the Ashanti. The oath also prevented the Ashanti from fighting the Nzema and allows Ashantis and Nzemas to marry each other with one single plantain as a dowry. The ‘unmovable’ sword of the Okomfo Anokye still remains in the grounds of the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he pushed it into the ground, almost 300 years ago. After King Osei Tutu’s death in 1717, Okomfo Anokye is

said to have returned to Akwapim and died there. The real cause of his death is not known, but it is said that he was going to bring the key to death and so no one should cry as if anyone is heard to cry he will never return and after a couple of days he still was not back and so the women cried and it was said that this action prevented one of the greatest priests in our history from returning and staying alive for ever. e

Five tips to help manage stress

S

tress occurs when you perceive that demands placed on you — such as work, school or relationships — exceed your ability to cope. Some stress can be beneficial at times, producing a boost that provides the drive and energy to help people get through situations like exams or work deadlines. However, an extreme amount of stress can have health consequences, affecting the immune, cardiovascular and neuroendocrine and central nervous systems, and take a severe emotional toll. Untreated chronic stress can result in serious health conditions including anxiety, insomnia, muscle pain, high blood pressure and a weakened immune system. Research shows that stress can contribute to the development of major illnesses, such as heart disease, depression and obesity.

Smile and laugh. Our brains are interconnected with our emotions and facial expressions. When people are stressed, they often hold a lot of the stress in their face. So laughs or smiles can help relieve some of that tension and improve the situation.

Get social support. Call a friend, send an email. When you share your concerns or feelings with another person, it does help relieve stress. How to Take

Care of Your Skin Brought to you by Nouvelle Parfumerie Gandour

W

hile your skin is a living organ that constantly regenerates itself, the right care can improve its support, elasticity, and shine.

Method 1 of 2: Skin type and treatments There are four general skin types: oily, dry, normal and combination. In addition, it is possible to have sensitive skin along with one of the four general types.

1 Dry Skin:

If your skin has a strong tendency toward dehydration, lacks oil, and has few breakouts if any at all, it is considered dry. In more extreme cases, dry skin lacks elasticity and can be extremely sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold temperatures. Wash your face once a day with a rich, creamy cleanser and warm water.

38 | May 2014 ENJOY No 89

Treatment: Rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry. Use toner to help with that tight and flaky feeling of dehydration. Avoid toners and makeup that contain alcohol as alcohol-based products have a drying effect on skin. Use a cream-based lotion to hydrate your skin and keep it rejuvenated.

2 Oily Skin: If your skin is oily, it usually has a lot of shine to it very soon after cleansing and the pores are generally slightly enlarged. It is more prone to pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads than other skin types and is coarser in texture.

beauty tips

3 Normal Skin:

Some consider normal skin to be combination skin, but it is not. If your skin is oily in the

“T zone” and your nose while dry and taut on the cheeks, it is considered normal. It’s also considered normal if it changes with seasons (dryer in winter, oilier in summer). Normal skins can also be ‘Normal-To’s’ as in normal to oily or normal to dry.

Treatment: Wash your face with

cleansers that are designed for your normal/normal-to skin type. Wipe an alcohol free, hydrating toner all over the face. Apply moisturizer more frequently to dry skin.

4 Combination Skin:

Combination skin is comprised of two extreme skin types on one face. These situations occur when there is acne and a lot of oil in one area when the rest of the skin is generally dry (no oil). Two common examples are dry skin with papular and pustular acne on the cheeks or a normal skin with inflamed papular and pustular acne in the chin and mouth area.

Treatment: Tend to each area appropriately as described above. If the acne is severe, consult a dermatologist or esthetician.

5 Sensitive Skin: Please note that you may have sensitive skin and normal, oily, or dry. If your skin has allergic reactions to beauty products and is usually sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold weather, it is sensitive. Sensitivity can show up in rash, redness, inflammation, acne, and dilated capillaries. Treatment: Look for cleansers, toners, makeup, and moisturizers that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. Cleanse, tone and moisturize with gentle products everyday. The idea for your skin is to always choose products with a soothing benefit. Some common ingredients to look for are: chamomile, azulene, bisabolol, allantoin, lavender, camphor, calamine, rosemary, thyme, aloe vera, coconut oil etc.

Method 2 of 2: General skin care for all skin types

1 Prevent sun damage.

Sunscreen is the real fountain of youth. Get into the habit of applying sunscreen or a lotion with minimum SPF 15 to 30 protection daily. Remember that the sun’s rays can still be damaging in winter months as it reflects off snow. If you don’t like taking the time to put on both moisturizer and sunscreen, buy a moisturizer with sunscreen.

2 Cleanse your face gently.

Don’t clean so much you dry it out.

3 Exfoliate.

Experiment with facial preparations, masks and scrubs to discover what works for you.

4 Live a healthy lifestyle.

Quit smoking. Few common items age the skin as effectively as tobacco. Eat a healthy diet which includes many fruits and vegetables. Reduce stress when possible. e

Treatment: Oily skin tends to attract more dirt than dry skin, so wash your face twice a day with a gentle non-foaming cleanser and warm water. Rinse with warm water. Use an alcohol-free, hydrating toner to help remove additional residue. Oil blotting sheets through out the day can help control shine, and it takes as little as 3 minutes after lunch. Although your skin’s oily, you still must moisturize it with a light moisturizer daily, or your skin will become dry underneath and overcompensate by producing more oil.

From one culture to another, I have seen when mothers are strong on, their children, regardless of the challenges they face, they tend to be more stronger. When they are resilient and filled with faith, their children are likely to be strong and filled with faith. As an observer of human history, I must say, that there is no other pursuit for a woman more ennobling and glorious than that of a mother. It doesn’t mean she is sequestered to that lone position, but that function is so invaluable to humanity. Mother, defines a divine nature that is beyond our contemporary understanding and respect. These women can do more than any other to cure the problems that exist in our society. Men of war and hegemony, have a long history of being ‘afraid’ of real power that mothers possess. They have more power than they themselves realize, they are the leaders of leaders. Who has more influence on a man than his wife or His mother! The word best describes leadership by a woman is mother. Is there any influence more enduring than a mother’s shepherding of her children along the path of life? A mother’s voice is unlike any other because a mother’s influence is endless. Mom, thank you for everything!

here aren’t enough words to encapsulate the awesomeness, magnificence, uniqueness, strength, splendor and love of a mother! Mothers are a very special breed of a human; think about who will do ALL that a ‘mother’ does, with the care and consistency? It has been said, “the ‘mother’ is the foundation of the nation, she nurtures the child in every conceivable way”, think about that for a moment. If you’ve had a mother or a mother-like figure in your life, she has shaped and/or influenced your choices in spouse, profession, habits, and overall lifestyle preference. She is your first and lifelong teacher.

Look at these ‘mothers’ and their lifetime universal influence: a. b. c. d.

Eve or Kavah- the beginning of beginnings, without her no Jews, Christians, or Muslims! Sara, Rebekah, Rachel, Martha, etc. (too many to name) without these moms who would raise future kings and prophets! Mary (mother of Jesus) - I could imagine she supported him in his righteous development. Christians would not be without her. Aminah– I am sure the mother of Mohammed, peace be upon him, taught him the value of charity and helping those less fortunate.

THE WORLD

WITH FRED Mawuli DEEGBE

F

red Mawuli Deegbe is the CEO of Heel The World (HTW), a luxury leather lifestyle brand based in Tesano, Accra Ghana; the brand has as vision, to beat global luxury brands and empower young African start-ups in entrepreneurship. Fred was first inspired to start the company in 2009 when he was working as a banker and went out to buy a nice pair of dress shoes. He bought a pair in a boutique in Osu and whiles marveling at them against the window of a boutique, a shoeshine boy walked by. He felt compelled to approach him and ask him whether he thought, he could make similar shoes. After a lot of haggling, he was disappointed when the shoe shine boy insisted that it was impossible for these shoes to be made in Ghana. What more even his more educated and ‘enlightened’ colleagues thought likewise. His Eureka moment came when sitting outside the bank one day, an airplane flew over his head and this forced Fred to ask, ‘If we cannot make our own shoes here, when shall we make our own airplanes.’ Fred became even more convinced that it could be done here and launched HTW part time in February 2011. By Decemeber 2011, there was so much excitement and interest around the brand that he had to quit his job at the bank and began doing it full time. Ever since, HTW churns out some of the most beautifully crafted bespoke men’s shoes and leather accessories, perfect for the dapper gentleman or for corporate entities that demand the highest quality products. The determination of Fred and his team has been amazing and received awards by President John Mahama in 2012 as the best young Fashion company in Ghana, inducted into both the World Economic Forum and African Leadership Network, featured on MTV an DSTV and just a few weeks ago, their story was aired on CNN African Start Ups. e
