Dear Friends, The month of June may bring the rains to Ghana but in our hearts we yearn for the sun and for friendship and brotherliness. These are the very themes that you will you discover in ENJOY MAGAZINE this month and on our website: www.enjoyaccra.com We are pleased to bring you pictures of the second national Cowbell cycling tour which was a huge success. We hope that this will be an event that we can enjoy for many years to come. Congratulations also go to Jessica Tei who we featured in last month's magazine on her victory in the MTN Asantehene Gold Cup in Kumasi. We bring you a profile of Mr Bhagwan Khubchandani, founder of the Melcom group, certainly an inspiring character, follow him through our pages as we tell his story. I
t is often said that champions die hard and nowhere was this more true than at this year’s Cowbell national cycling tour. The gallant cyclists fought the weather and the varying altitudes, to cover a distance of 1313km in a time of 29hrs 44mins and 36secs at an average speed of 39.1km/hr. In the end there could only be one winner and one man stood high on the podium with the gleaming trophy raised high. In the style of Lance Armstrong, Henry Tetteh Djangmah retained his title as best cyclist by time (yellow jersey) and his name will be written in the annals of Ghanaian cycling history as one of the greatest cyclists of his time. “Henry took home a giant trophy, brand new bicycle, a medal, cash prize of GH¢6,000, and products from Pens and Plastics Ghana Limited (PPGL) as well as keepsakes from Promasidor Ghana Limited.” Henry Tetteh Djangmah, last year’s yellow jersey winner from the Die Hard Cycling Club, was crowned winner of the 11stage 2012 Cowbell national cycling tour. The ace cyclist battled the rains, the sun, a slip up and fall as well as tiredness to hold on to the yellow jersey from stage 9 of the competition in Koforidua to the final lap at the Trade Fair Centre La, Accra. He took home a giant trophy, a brand new bicycle, a medal, cash prize of GH¢6,000, and products from Pens and Plastics Ghana Limited (PPGL) as well as keepsakes from Promasidor Ghana Limited.

He was closely trailed and challenged by Samuel Anim of the Young Stars Cycling Club. Samuel completed an impressive double as he emerged as both the best cyclist by points (Green jersey) and the best fighter cyclist (Red jersey). He took home a medal for each jersey, a total cash prize of GH¢6, 000, a trophy for each jersey and assorted products from PPGL and Promasidor. The overall best team of the competition went to Henry Tetteh Djangmah’s Die Hard Cycling Club followed by Young Stars Cycling Club and City Migro Cycling Club. The Clubs and their managers were decorated with medals and given hampers of assorted Cowbell products from Promasidor Ghana Limited.

Victor Cudjoe of the All Stars Cycling Club at only 18 years of age, emerged as the youngest cyclist by time and proved to be the discovery of the tour. He took home the white jersey as well as a medal and a cash prize of GH¢1, 000, a trophy and assorted products from PPGL and Promasidor Ghana Limited. Interestingly Victor was competing for the first time in the race, and gave Tetteh Djangmah a good run for his money closing the 24 second gap between them at the 10th stage to only 17 seconds by the end of the competition.

A huge crowd of onlookers gathered at the Trade Fair centre in La to welcome the cyclists home and witness the official awards ceremony which was the climax of the 13 days Tour du Ghana cycling event. Spectators were treated to fireworks and live band music by the Ghana Police Service. The elated crowd cheered and danced as they received refreshment in the form of chilled cowbell products.

Mr Wolanyo Agra, Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), commended the cyclists for participating in the competition and for their spirit and resilience. He congratulated Promasidor Ghana Limited and other sponsors for investing in the sport and urged them to continue in their bid to develop the sport. Mr Agra said the Parliament of Ghana will soon pass a Sports Bill which will encourage corporate entities to operate and invest more in sports in the country.

The Pan-African Workshop
W
ith the initiative of Institut Français du Ghana and assistance from Da Viva, a 2 weeks Pan African workshop was organized to educate and motivate the fashion and textile students of the Accra Polytechnic, KNUST, Kumasi Polytechnic and young designers of the Web. This project took place from the 8th to the 18th of May 2012 and was entirely financed by the Institut Français du Ghana. The goal of this workshop was to impart and share knowledge, skills and experience from expert and professional designers from Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Austria and Paris. Representing these countries were, Miss Naa Amanua Williams; International fashion designer of Da Viva who shared her experiences and knowledge about surface design, Miss Gisela Gagakuma, who took the students through the practical application of Swarovski Elements, Miss Nicoue-Beglah Kotoko from Togo ; a professional and excellent trainer in the process of creating a collection, from Nigeria was Mr. Prince Oyefusi Akanni who gave a remarkable delivery on solving all problems of garment construction using patterns and a superb lecture on, ‘how to survive in a competitive market’. From Austria, were Mr. Michael Renzler; head of market development Africa from Swarovski Elements and also Mr. Martin Doujak; head of technical support for Swarovski Elements who gave a presentation and introduction of Swarovski Elements. Concluding the workshop was Miss Sakina Msa from Paris; international fashion designer who recently designed a collection for Puma, shared her experiences in the industry and knowledge about Finishing, Sizing and Pricing of garments. The students and management of the Accra Polytechnic, KNUST, Kumasi Polytechnic and young designers of the Web were very involved and responded positively to the workshop. They asked the trainers to give them the teaching aids used in the lectures. They are also hoping that the trainers will come back for more training in the future. The 2 weeks workshop was closed with a thrilling fashion show in Kumasi, organized by Da Viva at the Golden Tulip Hotel and supported by the Institut Français du Ghana, French Embassy, Alliance Française Kumasi and Golden Tulip Kumasi. There was a remarkable attendance of over four hundred guests and designs by students from KNUST, Kumasi Polytechnic and Ben Genesis who showcased their designs on the runway. Ghana and the customers’ first choice to shop in its 25 colossal departmental stores spread out over the country while four more branches are scheduled to open this year. Today, Melcom is the largest shopping spot in Ghana and Mr. Bhagwan Khubchandani, the leading retailer in this country, is running his business with the Group’s strong workforce of over 1,900 employees and its turnover reaching $200 million. Bhagwan’s education was badly disrupted during his childhood as he attended 6 schools in 7 years. He could not study regularly in a particular school. He describes: “I completed GCEs. Realizing that my educational qualifications were insufficient to enter the business world, I took courses in accounting, correspondence and other business-related subjects”. Bhagwan entered the biz world just after he finished his schooling as he unravels: “After completing my schooling in 1954, I was given the choice of coming to Ghana or going to Hong Kong. I chose Hong Kong and spent 6 years working there and in Japan before coming to Ghana”. 18

Working in different countries like Hong Kong and Japan turned to be an advantage for Bhagwan as his years of stint helped him widen his commercial savvy. Since business was in his blood being from the Sindhi community, Bhagwan didn’t take much time to understand it and took it to the cusp of success in his host land. However, all it tied off with his inherited business which his father had started in Ghana along with his brother. In 1946, Ramchand Khubchandani set up his own retail business under the auspices of Glamour in Ghana and that was opened in partnership with his younger brother. In 1954

they established Ghana’s first garment factory. Within a few years, they opened a textile factory, employing over 1,200 staff. On the other hand, their retail trading was also developing side by side. With their rising strides, by 1970, their company had opened 22 branches in Ghana. In order to improve the merchandizing and sourcing of new products, they established offices in Japan and Hong Kong. But in between, the baton was passed to the next generation, as Bhagwan acquaints: “In 1966, my father and his brother left Ghana to settle in the Far East and the business was left in the hands of their sons: Bhagwan (me) and Kishin”. Both the cousins carried on their inherited business to the best of their wisdom and efforts but in 1990, due to differences in their opinion, they parted ways. Thus, Bhagwan left Glamour to establish his own business under the name and style of Melcom which he started with Enjoy June 2012
a capital of $2,000,000. And then, he was joined by his two sons-in-law. Over the years, the company has developed into the largest chain of departmental stores in Ghana. Gradually, they diversified into other ventures also, for they have an established plastic factory, electronic assembly plant and a travel agency.

Now, three companies of Melcom Group deal with different businesses. Their Century Industries Ltd. is a plasticware manufacturing while Crown Star Electronics Industry Ltd. manufactures and assembles electronics, and Melcom Travel & Tours Ltd. has made its recognition as a fullfledged travel agency, bringing easy and convenient travel to its customers’ doorsteps. Under Melcom Group, there are ten more property-related companies and they also have large plots of land for future development. Besides Ghana, they also have their business offices in Hong Kong and China. As Bhagwan has made monumental achievements in business, he has been honored with some prestigious awards also. From 2002-2006, The Chartered Institute of Marketing of Ghana has also recognized the enthusiasm of Melcom’s employees and management in this sector, 19

by awarding Melcom the “Best Retail Outlet of the Year” and eventually inducting the Group in the “Hall of Fame”. In 2011, Bhagwan was presented a “Special Entrepreneur Achievement Award” by the CIMG. Bhagwan claims with perceptible elation: “This was the very first time such an award was bestowed, and I was privileged to be the first recipient”. He was a very active member of the Rotary Club and became its President in 1976. His group of companies was conferred on with a Citation for the services rendered during Bhagwan’s tenure. They also received a Citation from the Freemason Lodge acknowledging their charitable services. Bhagwan’s participation in social work and his devotion to charity are laudable. About his charitable organization, he acquaints: “We engage in a fair amount of philanthropy. The charity arm of Melcom is Melcom Care and is handled by my daughter Rekha. We are also in the process of establishing an education trust”. A Citation was given to them by the Indian Association of Ghana for

Bhagwan’s charitable services rendered for many years, during which time he served as Secretary, President and member of several committees. Married to Sheila in 1962, Bhagwan has 2 daughters: Kavita 47 and Rekha 46. Sheila’s father and Bhagwan’s father were close friends who were glad to have established a new relationship after the marriage of their children. About his daughters, Bhagwan says: “Kavita and Rekha are happily married and I am very fortunate that their husbands are working with me as partners. Kavita

Divine selling an item to his customer
With time and support from his clients he has been able to export his pieces and sells them in other African countries and around the world. John Adams, our second artist, started sculpting eleven years ago from his home in the Volta Region. Unable to fulfill his dream of becoming a pilot he made a career from his hobby of sculpting. Our third artist, Divine, began his romance with the arts at the age of eighteen. He learnt the ropes from his grandfather and his creations are still inspired by "the old man's" work. Divine’s way of handling metal is sublime; he builds toy cars, silhouettes and bicycles using only metal. His designs are unique and a joy to look at. Our artists love their work and would love to produce even more prized pieces, but they are struggling due to la ack of sales. One message is clear from all of them, they seek security and would love a permanent place to base themselves similar to the art market in Accra. Our trip to see the artists at Tetteh Quarshie was inspiriational and I would certainly recommed a visit. You may be surprised at what is on offer. e

Constance Swaniker Constance was born in Accra but spent eighteen years outside her native Ghana in the Gambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. This diversity in her background has influenced her outlook on life, business and art. A graduate in sculpture from KNUST College of Art she has become such a fixture of the art scene that it is easy to forget that her first solo exhibition “Passage of Discovery” occurred only last year. Before then she had ventured into the wrought iron and furniture design industry and remains an outstanding leader in that field. Swaniker’s sculptures are usually abstractions of the human figure, suggestive of the human body with free flowing organic lines. She is prolific in her undulating and vivacious sculpture expressing the fundamentals of human experience.

he Indian Women's Association held a breast cancer awareness brunch at the plush Labadi Beach Hotel.
This annual event aims to spread awareness of the plight of people living with breast cancer; as well as to provide information about the disease and to raise funds for the treatment of needy patients at the Korle Bu teaching hospital. As always it was well attended by the local and expat communities. Labadi Hotel provided fabulous food and the International Players of Accra provided some of the entertainment in the form of a short performance. A
ccra Accueil is an association which raises funds to help support local initiatives in Ghana. The association held a fundraiser at the French Ambassador's residence aimed at supporting two institutions, Volta Kids and the Anne Memorial International School in Nima. Volta Kids is an NGO which supports the education of needy but brilliant students in the Volta Region and the Anne Memorial International School provides affordable education to the deprived children of the Nima Community. Funds were raised through the auctioning of art works donated by some artists and the money raised will be shared between the two institutions.

24 wonton wrappers 2 tablespoons olive oil 24 medium shrimp, peeled and deveined 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon chilli powder 2 limes 1/2 cup rocket 3 tablespoons sour cream
Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare wonton shells. Lightly brush wontons with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Arrange in 24 mini muffin/cupcake cups. Bake 5-7 minutes until golden brown and crisp. Toss shrimp with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, salt, 2 teaspoons of lime zest and chile powder. Bake 5-8 minutes until shrimp are opaque throughout. To assemble, fill each wonton cup with a few leaves of rocket, a small dollop of sour cream, one shrimp then top with a spritz of lime juice.
Ingredients » 1 cup dry gin » 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice » 1/2 cup simple syrup » 1 cup club soda » 4 orange slices » 4 maraschino cherries » ice
Directions 1. Combine gin, lemon juice and simple syrup in a pitcher. Stir. 2. Fill 4 glasses to the brim with ice then fill 3/4 with the Tom Collins. 3. Add a few splashes of club soda. 4. Garnish each glass with an orange and a cherry. 5. Note: To make the simple syrup, combine 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of water in a small saucepan. Place over medium-high heat and stir until the sugar dissolves. Cool.
