n the evening of June 7th 2012, at the plush Golden Tulip hotel Accra conference room, a real estate development company, Comland Ghana Limited, launched its newest apartment complex called Sloane House. On arrival guests were greeted with glasses of champagne and had the opportunity to have photographs taken with the brand ambassador for Sloane House, Michael Essien. Present at the ceremony were Comland executives, Michael Essien, government ministers, chief executive officers of various companies and entrepreneurs. The architect of the project, George Mohasseb gave a three dimensional presentation about Sloane House taking the guests on a virtual tour in and around the apartments.

VIP guests had the opportunity to feast on superb gastronomical offerings from Lexington chef, Jose Bediako, whilst enjoying a selection of marvelously mixed drinks all set to a backdrop of eclectic sounds from the resident deejays. ‘The Lexington’ served a vast array of cocktails ranging from an elegant cucumber & basil gimlet made with fresh muddled cucumber & London dry gin, to a breakfast margarita with a heaped spoonful of orange marmalade. Food included a selection of light bites (Available from the bar menu), including a cheeseboard with cornichons and a delightful tailed shrimp cocktail, served in quaint little preserve jars. a leading Bank in Ghana and a subsidiary of the Societe Generale Group celebrated its Citizen Commitment Week from 1st to 9th June 2012 by presenting a refurbished computer lab and 20 computers and accessories to the Shelter for Abused Children in Osu Accra. The climax of the week included activities with the children and a buffet lunch. The essence of the weeklong celebration is to choose a project that will be undertaken by each subsiduary that should have an impact in the community and more importantly that the staff should be committed to. In her welcome address, the Manager of the Shelter, Madam Georgina Mensah, said that SG-SSB had committed itself to the Shelter for Abused Children for the last 3 years and they were delighted and grateful and honoured to have staff from SG-SSB. The social interaction, clean up and the other activities would leave smiles on the faces of the staff and children. Gilbert Hie, the Managing Director of SG-SSB noted that the citizen commitment week is part of a a worldwide programme of the company to help needy people in the framework of sustainable development. He later pledged his company's continued support to the shelter and expressed optimism that the activities of SG-SSB would help the children to lead normal lives. He stated that the Bank was assisting as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and that SG-SSB believes CSR means to Care, to Share and to Respect. e

Story Time:
The Tale of Medusa, the Gorgon O
nce upon a time there lived a beautiful lady called Medusa who lived in the city of Athens in Greece. Medusa was very proud of her beauty and each day boasted outrageously about how pretty she was.
Medusa would brag to anybody about how her skin was more beautiful than fresh fallen snow or how her hair glowed brighter than the sun. She could also be heard saying her eyes were greener than the Aegean Sea. Medusa would spend whole days gazing lovingly at her reflection in the mirror. She admired herself in her hand mirror for an hour each morning as she brushed her hair. At one time, Medusa was so intent on admiring herself in the well water for her father's horses that she even forgot to fetch the water in for them. Medusa went on and on about her beauty to anyone and everyone who stopped long enough to hear her. One day when she made her first visit to the Parthenon with her friends. The Parthenon was the largest temple to the goddess Athena in Greece. It was decorated with amazing sculptures and paintings. Everyone who entered was awed by the beauty of the place and couldn’t help but think of how grateful they were to Athena, goddess of wisdom, for inspiring them and for watching over their city of Athens. Everyone, that is, except Medusa. When Medusa saw the sculptures, she whispered that she would have made a much better subject for the sculptor than Athena had. She condemned the goddess's painted picture complaining of her thick eyebrows and intimated that the artwork would have been much more wonderful had the painting been that of someone as delicate as her.

kids corner When Medusa reached the altar she sighed and said, “My it is a beautiful temple. It is a shame it was wasted on Athena for I am so much prettier than her and perhaps someday people will build an even grander temple to my beauty.” Athena’s priestesses who overheard Medusa gasped. Sacrilege they screamed, shivers ran down the spine of all the people in the temple who quickly began to leave for fear of what might happen if the goddess had overheard Medusa’s rash remarks. Before long the temple was empty except for Medusa, who was so busy admiring her own reflection in the large bronze doors that she hadn't noticed the swift departure of everyone else. Suddenly, her reflection instead of her own the face of Athena back at her. “Vain and said angrily, “You think than I am but there is beauty alone. While play and learn, you do admire yourself.” Medusa tried to point was an inspiration to and that she made simply looking so lovely, her with a frustrated Athena retorted, swiftly in all mortals. n Friday June 8th 2012, Melcom Group of Companies signed a new brand ambassador, no other than Asamoah Gyan. The 26-yearold spent the 2011-12 season on loan at Al Ain from Sunderland, scoring a league-high 22 goals and guiding the club to the UAE title. Gyan shot to prominence after scoring 3 goals at the 2010 Fifa World Cup. On May 8th 2012, Gyan announced his return to the Black Stars team. His nickname is Baby Jet and his second passion, after football, is rapping. In summer 2010, Gyan recorded and released a Ghanaian Hiplife song with Castro The Destroyer, where he features under the alias 'Baby Jet'. The song is entitled "African Girls" and was launched onto Ghanaian screens. uame Brown is an America born Ghanaian (that is if there is anything in the likes of that); he has never seen the shores of the motherland. His idea of Ghana is based on hearsay from people who left the shores several decades before he was born. We were colleagues at one of those “Yankee” Colleges; when I told him I was going back to Ghana for vacations, he asked me with a mystified expression “Ghana? What is there to do”? As a Ghanaian native living in faraway “abrokyire”, I have had to answer this question many times. Most people only hear of Ghana through the exploits of our national soccer team the black stars. They are quick to mention the names of Asamoah Gyan, Micheal Essien and Dede Ayew but are clueless about the opportunities that Ghana offers in terms of tourism, entertainment and business ventures. I have always found it interesting to see hordes of people going in and out of this 36
country. Today, Ghana thrives on its tourism and expatriate populations who import new tastes to the already savory melting-pot that is the bubbly Ghana. Like myself, thousands of other young men and women leave Ghana for higher education; a time comes when we leave our parents and travel off to “abrokyire”. Yet we always come back, be it for family or for the sheer excitement of reliving our childhood. To be honest: we often use the former as an excuse for the latter – our guilty pleasure. Many foreign childhood friends of mine return to Ghana even though their parents are longgone. It’s no news that the youth cannot get enough; there must be something sweet in the air? In flight back to the motherland last summer, I was asked by a young passenger "what fun is there in the country?” I was awestruck; did he really think my beloved homeland was boring? Did he not know of Oxford Street in Osu www.enjoyaccra.com
or Bantama high street in OseiKrom or beach road in T’adi?The places all Ghanaian burghers flock to for a taste of home? My one and only, go-to destination; one I will guiltily choose over any world-class tourist hot-spot? Imagine that, OseiKrom Boring? This dude needed a tutorial; I took it upon myself to list the endless possibilities for fun. Quizzed about his preferences, he mentioned how he enjoyed good music, and I informed him that Ghana was the birthplace of good African music. “Chaley, Ghana is the place for you”. Who enjoys a good beat more than the azonto-dancing, Clubbeer-drinking, club-hopping youth of Ghana today? I quickly whipped out my iTunes library and introduced him to the likes of Sarkodie, Buk Bak, Brazilian –haired Eazy, Baby Jet, and then some VIP and Kwabena Kwabena. He then asked what keeps me coming back to Ghana, since he had seen me sometime back on a flight back to Accra. Enjoy July-August 2012

believe that one of the great disorders of the world is a misunderstanding of the value and role of women. The propagation of the misunderstanding is by men and accepted by far too many women. In a history dominated by violence, men found it easy to oppress women, and thought of all sorts of clever justifications for the relegation of women to the status of third class citizens. One wonders if part of the male desire to keep women in their “place” stems from an unconscious fear of the power of women. Is it a base desire for power and selfaggrandizement that turns men away from their earliest memories of the powerful
influence and love that they received from their mothers? Do they worry that selfish agendas will come to nought if they lift women up to their rightful positions? The most valuable thing for a male infant is love. At that age, male babies are very clear about their priorities, and speak the language of love with every smile. In the book, Mary Poppins, the twins, John and Barbara, who had not yet reached the age of one, could still speak the language of the birds and the trees and the sun and the wind. As they grew, they lost their ability to understand. In the same way, I think male children often lose their sensitivity to the embracing spirit of motherly love, and by extension, the essence of love as expressed and felt by women. Everything starts from that quality of love-the action. Male babies revel in it, and male adults find solace in it, if they open their hearts to the real value of their wives, their sisters and of course their
mothers. As women are able to love with a motherly and compassionate core, men also can feel deeply and love with the same compassion. The nature of men and women are different, but if we did not share some degree of each other’s attributes, how could we possibly relate to each other? One might compare a man to a riverbed and a woman to the water that flows across the rocks. They both have unique value, and men are certainly capable of embracing others with love. It is the love that flows from the hearts of women, however, that most closely resembles the original essential aspect of God’s embracing love. It is this transcendent quality of motherly and feminine love that imbues women with such incredible value. We love our mothers, as we remember them on Mother’s Day, and let us remember the Jewish proverb that says, “God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers.” A world with mothers is a world filled with hope for life. e

2 6-ounce skinless salmon fillets (3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 nectarine, pit removed and cut into 8 wedges 1 tablespoon real maple syrup 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 2 1-ounce slices/rounds goat cheese 4 basil leaves, cut into thin strips olive oil to drizzle on top 1 cup cooked couscous

1. Preheat grill pan (you can also use a heavy-bottomed frying pan) to medium-high heat. 2. Rub salmon fillets with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and sprinkle, on both sides, with salt. 3. Toss nectarine wedges with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, maple syrup and crushed red pepper flakes. 4. Place salmon into pre-heated pan and cook 3-4 minutes on each side or until cooked through; salmon should still be moist with a slightly dark pink center. (Cooking time may vary depending on thickness) 5. If space in the pan, add nectarines and grill or sear until just warmed through and grill marks are visible, about 2 minutes on each side. (This can be done after cooking the salmon, just keep the salmon covered in aluminum foil while the nectarines cook). 6. Serve salmon fillets over a bed of couscous and top with grilled nectarines, goat cheese, strips of fresh basil and a light drizzle of olive oil.

Directions In a small pitcher or 2 cup measuring cup combine the orange soda, orange juice and orange liqueur. Divide evenly between 2 martini glasses. Hold a teaspoon measure upside down over the glass, slowly pour a shot of black vodka on top of the orange juice mixture so that is floats on top, creating a layered effect. Repeat with second drink.
