OBAMA RE-ELECTION
“Forty-five percent of those who voted for Mr. Obama were racial minorities, a record number”. Obama-mania hits the world once again and we bring you these facts on the USA 2012 elections and how the first African-American President broke all electoral records in United States of America.
1. Barack Obama is the first US President since Franklin D. Roosevelt to win re-election with unemployment above 7.2 per cent. The jobless rate is currently 7.9 per cent, 0.7 per cent higher than the rate when Ronald Reagan won a second term in 1984. Roosevelt secured re-election in 1936 with unemployment at 16.6 per cent. 2. Based on exit polls , Obama won 93 per cent of the black vote, 73 per cent of the Asian vote, 71 per cent of the Hispanic vote and 39 per cent of the white vote. “Forty-five percent of those who voted for Mr. Obama were racial minorities, a record number”. 3. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are the first presidential ticket
to lose both candidates' home states (Massachusetts and Wisconsin) since 1972 Democrat candidates George McGovern (South Dakota) and Sargent Shriver (Maryland).
4. Defying conservative predictions that he would win the Electoral College but lose the popular vote, Obama currently has 58,532,508 votes (50.2 per cent) to Romney's 56,353,802 (48.2 per cent). 5. Obama's re-election marks the first time the US has had three two-term presidencies in a row since Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe. 20

6. As the Democrats quipped, “we've got ballots full of women”. It was the female half of the US population that secured Obama's re-election, voting by 55 per cent to 44 per cent for the US president. Men, by contrast, voted for Romney by 52 per cent to 45 per cent. 7. The Democrats have won the popular vote in five of the last six presidential elections (1992, 1996, 2000, 2008 and 2012). Al Gore won the popular vote against George W. Bush in 2000 by 543,895 (0.5 per cent) but lost the Electoral College to Bush by five votes (271 to 266). 8. Obama polled strongest among 18-29-year-olds (60 per cent), whilist Romney polled strongest among the over-65s (56 per cent). 9. Fifty six per cent of self-described “moderates” voted for Obama along with 86 per cent of liberals. Eighty two per cent of conservatives voted for Romney. 10. Obama's victory tweet - “Four more years” - has had 563,281 retweets and 189,641 favourites, making it the most popular tweet ever. e Enjoy November 2012

T
he Melbourne Cup is Australia's major thoroughbred horse race. Marketed as "the race that stops a nation", it is a 3,200 metre race for three-year-olds and over. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world, and one of the richest turf races. Conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria, the event starts at 3pm on the first Tuesday in November. The race has been held since 1861 and was originally held over two miles, but following preparation for Australia's adoption of the metric system in the 1970s; the current race distance of 3,200 meters (or roughly 2 miles). The present record holder is the 1990 winner Kingston Rule with a time of 3min 16.3sec. To mark the race that stops a nation in Accra, the Australian High Commissioner H.E William Williams and his staff and a variety of volunteers held a charity dinner to raise funds in support of Basics International, a Ghanaian NGO. Dinner was prepared by the Labadi Beach Hotel and once again was spot on. Congrats to all the sponsors and to the Australian High commission we say Ayekoo for being such great hosts. e

The 21st Century Student “Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you see the whole world.” – George Bernard Shaw
I
s your glass half-full or half empty? The factors that determine the correct answer is the objective. Even then, your perception of “full or empty” is very subjective. In the picture below is it a picture of an old or young woman? Ask a friend or two. Look very carefully. What do you see? This will be very interesting! The way you and I see things, our paradigm, shape our emotions and influences our behavior. It determines every aspect of conscious and sub-conscious thoughts. Essentially, shaping ‘what’ we think as appropriate, important, and elemental. Our view of these pictures can be shift based on new information, this is a paradigm shift. Consider the following questions: What is the purpose of education? What educational goals were important to parents 50 years ago? What educational goals are important to parents of today? What will be important educational goals of parents further into the 21st century? University of Michigan sociologist Duane Alwin, who was comparing “modern” data collected in the 1920’s was tracking the shift. Alwin, noted that in the 1920’s, parents emphasized obedience, conformity, respect for home religion, and good manners as being top traits they desired in children. But by early 1990’s, what parents
desired even more for their children was ability to think for themselves, to take responsibility for their lives, to show initiative, and to be tolerant of diversity. Nearly two decades have passed since Alwin reported his findings and we now crossed into the twenty-first century. If anything, the need for young people to be more self-reliant and more responsible has increased-exponentially. The trend is global; countries are more affected by globalization and a cross continental workforce. The 3 R’s (reading, writing, & arithmetic) may never become obsolete, however the methods in which they are used have and will continue to change. Media literacy, conflict resolution, critical thinking skills, solving problems, innovation, and adapting to change are current trends in the21st century global workforce, which must reflect on educational objectives. I can easily see a paperless learning organization where inter/intra net are foremost modes of sending work and correspondences to and from teachers, students and parents. Children checking school intranet site for homework and projects. In fact, one French teacher at a private school in Cantonments is ahead of the curve, he has continued to move with the trends in education, preparing the 21st century student with 21st century modalities of learning and assessing students’ progress. e

» 12 chicken drumettes, skin on » 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus to taste » Freshly ground black pepper » 3 slices sandwich sourdough bread, crusts trimmed, torn into pieces » 1 clove garlic, roughly chopped » 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves » 2 scallions, green and white part, chopped » 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted » 1/3 cup honey mustard » Hot sauce, optional

Self-improvement is a strong focus this month, dear Aries. Finances, taxes, and intimacy are main themes that you'll be encountering in November, but this is just the beginning of a several year trend. Events and realizations this month can get the ball rolling for important changes. Love relationships can reach new depths of understanding. However, there are some hurdles to deal with, and the most important one has to do with your relationship with yourself. This is the time to work on ridding yourself of self-defeating or limiting attitudes.
Taurus 21/4-21/05
Solutions for October
HARD
HARD
You'll be dealing with relationship matters, and especially commitments, in November, dear Taurus, but this is a theme that is only just beginning for you and will in fact be in force for a couple of years. A sense of peace regarding work and health routines is with you this month, and your social life tends to take center stage. You could find that you're making more concessions than usual and that your agenda takes a back seat to the plans and needs of important people in your life. A conflict between time spent with children or friends, and time spent with a partner, could arise.
Gemini 22/5-21/06
Work and health matters take center stage this month, dear Gemini. In fact, these will be big themes for a couple of years moving forward, and events that occur in November tend to encourage first steps towards making big changes. Going over past errors, redoing projects, smoothing over differences on the job--all of these matters occupy your mind and your time this month. You're also busy working with your physical body. Implementing and maintaining an exercise or nutrition program should be a priority. Although routine matters can get boring at times, reworking and reorganizing these things can be very satisfying. 42

Cancer
Libra
Capricorn
22/6-23/07
24/9-23/10
22/12-20/01
Romance and creativity can blossom this month, dear Cancer, even though there are some rough patches to deal with. The focus is on having fun, enjoying hobbies and pleasurable pastimes, children, and love. Those things in your life that are preventing you from successfully doing any of things can become glaringly obvious, and the chance to put them behind you is especially strong, with midmonth a hotspot. You are in a rather dramatic phase right now, and your desire to express yourself is powerful. However, while Mercury retrogrades from the 6-26, and especially while this retrograde transits your solar fifth house from the 14-26, you may not be received as well as you'd like.
November is a strong month for taking care of business, practical matters, budget-making, asking for a raise, and discovering new ways to boost your income, dear Libra. A mini-crisis can set you into motion on these matters. Keeping your cool is necessary. An eclipse occurs mid-month that stimulates you to rearrange your budget, and while this is an important wake-up call, you have plenty of time and opportunity to do so diligently, so avoid snap decisions, as pressured as you may be feeling to make a move. Venus works its way through your sign until the 21st, and this boosts your natural magnetic appeal.
Your social life is likely to be animated this month, dear Capricorn, demanding your attention. At the same time, your work is blossoming and especially fruitful. The first three weeks of November are good for smoothing over differences in your career and also for dealing with reputation issues. Just keep in mind that Mercury's retrograde from the 6-26 can mean more delays and hiccups to deal with than average. You'll have plenty of time to rework your plans by the end of the month and into December, so do what you can to avoid stressing over details. Mid-month, a fresh start is possible when it comes to a friendship or group association. Team spirit is important right now.
L eo
Scorpio
24/7-23/08
24/10-22/11
You're pouring more of your considerable energy (and perhaps money) into family, home, and other domestic matters this month, dear Leo. Attention to your home base is vital for the new cycle beginning near the end of November, when creativity, romance, children, and pleasure come into focus. The stronger you feel on the inside, the more fun you'll have (without the guilt that sometimes comes with it) during this upcoming cycle. At first glance, the month may not seem to be as productive as most, but in fact you are building your nest, gathering your resources, and preparing for busier months ahead.
This can be a month of big internal changes, dear Scorpio. The cosmos demand that you mature in some manner - that you meet responsibilities, and get organized in certain areas of your life. The Solar Eclipse in your sign mid-month brings a chance for a new personal beginning, so that if you are looking to reinvent yourself, this is the time to share yourself in an all-new way. Your personal impact is strong. From the 14-26, you are likely to be in a frame of mind that involves review and caution. Avoid pushing matters. Most decisions don't need to be made just yet. You're likely to be self-involved this month, but it's a necessary process.
Career and reputation matters continue to take center stage this month, dear Aquarius. Over the coming year, professional and personal changes are very likely, and circumstances this month tend to get the ball rolling in that direction. You are aligning yourself with new goals or recommitting to those already in place. From the 14-26, you could be revisiting old problems in your career or dealing with problems that others have created, but you also have the chance to breathe new life into projects you may have shelved. You will need to tone down your impatience with slower co-workers and stalled projects.
Virgo
Sagittarius
Pisces
24/8-23/09
23/11-21/12
20/02-20/03
A sense of peace about your personal finances boosts your overall mood, dear Virgo. Spending on frivolous items may be a lure, and you may need to tame this desire somewhat, but you might also decide that you deserve some pampering! November is a busy month for you, with plenty of phone calls, emails, appointments, and errands to keep you on your toes. However, it's all too easy for you to be misunderstood during Mercury's retrograde from the 6-26. Mechanical break-downs, misinformation, dealing with red tape, and other such annoyances, may be part of the picture now. Concentrate on getting your work done right the first time so you won't have to redo later.
While you can be quick to speak and react in the first week of the month, dear Sagittarius, you could be eating your words or at least rethinking things thereafter. In fact, you may not be ready to make clear decisions until Mercury re-enters your sign on December 11th. It may also feel as if others are slowing your progress, as they can seem distant or indecisive. Romantic and creative matters take center stage until the 16th, and you are likely to receive a lot of attention. However, love becomes more complicated and private from the 21st forward. The first few weeks of the month could involve some sacrifices and rethinking of your plans. However, it’s a time of gathering your resources for the weeks ahead.
Your sense of adventure runs high this month, dear Pisces, and you are itching for a change of pace. Opportunities for travel and education figure strongly. All things foreign or undiscovered not only appeal to you in November, but could bring new opportunities. You're likely to make some important connections if you venture forth onto unfamiliar ground. Nevertheless, there can be some complications to your plans from the 6-26. Vigilantly check your calendar and schedules so that you don't miss important interviews or deadlines. Watch that you don't misrepresent yourself, particularly around the 22nd. Your ruler, Neptune, turns direct in your sign after months of retrograde (or apparent backward) motion. 43

“
In order to enjoy beer, on needs to know how to totally enjoy and savour every drop of the drink meant for kings….
Aroma
Appearance
”
I like to leave a little room at the top of a bowl-shaped beer glass in order to swish the beer around and create more aroma. Whichever way you aerate the beer, you’ll want to have some room to stick your nose down in there and give it a good smell. Look for beer smells like malt, yeast, alcohol and hops. Identify unique and signature smell.
Hold your glass up to the light and check for clarity, cloudiness or colour and match those up with the style of beer you are drinking . Club beer should be golden and clear.
Taste After completing the steps listed above, taste the beer by taking a small mouthful and breathing in slightly as you taste the beer. This will open up all your senses and let you get a complete picture of what you are tasting. In the proper glass, the beer should hit your tongue denoting bitter and sweet flavours on the parts of your mouth that can discern those tastes. Take a second taste and swish the beer around in your mouth slightly to move the beer across all your flavour sensing areas.
Mouth Feel By tasting beer, you should be able to determine the mouth feel. Some beers have a heavy, almost oily mouth feel to them, while other beers are light and dry and offer very little by way of mouth feel. Becoming familiar with beer styles will help you determine what type of mouth feel is common with each style.
Finish
54
Some beers finish with a sweet, pleasant after taste, while other beers finish bitter and even dry. When you taste your beer and swallow it, ask yourself what it leaves behind? What’s the last thing you taste? With a sweeter finish, you’ll end up with a sharper leftover taste impression in the front of your mouth, while with a bitter beer, you’ll taste it more in the back of the mouth. With a dry finish, it will leave very little in the way of taste residue, especially overly sweet tastes. Dry usually denotes the www.enjoyaccra.com Enjoy November 2012 absence of sweet.

Know your limit If you do not already know how much alcohol you can handle without losing control, try it out one time at home with a friend present and have them videotape you, then see what happens when you consume more than the recommended one drink per hour.
Eat while you drink It is particularly good to eat protein foods such as cheese peanuts, which help to slow absorption of alcohol into circulatory system.

Cultivate taste Enjoy your drink, don’t rush it. If you gulp a drink you will be losing the pleasure of tasting and smelling the various flavours in the drink.
Accept a drink only when you really want one At a party if someone is trying to force another drink on you, ask for ice or drink a non-alcoholic beverage.
Skip a drink now and then Space your alcoholic drinks out to keep the desired blood alcohol concentration.
Appoint a designated driver Have someone available who will not be drinking and will drive all drinkers home. This is critical if the person has consumed more than one drink per hour. If you know that you will have to drive after consuming alcohol, limit your consumption to no more than onewww.enjoyaccra.com drink an hour. Enjoy November 2012 57
