Dear Friends, We have dedicated this 83rd issue of your favourite Enjoy Magazine to Arts, Culture, and Sport. We offer a message of condolence to the family of Professor Kofi Awoonor. Though he led a selfless life, offering peace, gentleness and kindness to all, the purveyors of brutality, intolerance and barbarism thought that they had had the better of him. Though he is no longer physically with us, his work remains. We wish him a safe journey and may he find rest in the bosom of his ancestors. We are certain that those you have left behind will continue to write, paint and play music for the enjoyment of all. This month the artists Nana Anoff, Panji Anoff, Nii Obodai, Rania Odaymat, Nyani Quarmyne, Serena, and Makeba exhibited their talents in the magical setting created by interior curator Nada Moukarzel of La Maison in Osu themed appropriately as BEYOND. We invite you to meet them and discover the arts BEYOND We invite you to explore the world of the exceptional and talented artist, Kwame Osa. You are sure to be enchanted by his creativity and we will bring you more of his work in future editions of the magazine. Television plays an important role in the world of arts and culture, and Charlotte Gustavson, CEO of VIASAT 1 has after three successful years in Ghana returned to Sweden for a new challenge. We are happy to welcome and congratulate, the new and first Ghanaian CEO of VIASAT 1 television, Maame Arhin. In the sporting arena, at the polo club in Accra, in a polo match organised to mark Nigeria’s Independence day, Team Ghana were beaten by an invited Nigerian team. We say a big Ayekoo to the organizers of this event, Mia, Tamzin, Maya, Rosalia, Lisa and Catharina, who played a vital part in organising this wonderful celebration. In other news, (that you might already have heard) the Black Stars of Ghana walloped their Egyptian counterparts to edge closer to participating in the next World. Ayekoo to the Black Stars and Brazil here we come. Enjoy

eyond the tangible reality of Accra’s daily bustle is the collective consciousness of a group of artists who live in the future. Their works inquire into the various dimensions of existence, the duality and oneness of humanity, and the source of beauty. Enter with an open eye, for it’s the only way to merge yourself into that space where crystallized moments of life are on display.

Self Image; Awareness, Roots, Self Image; Transformation, Origins By Rania 6 | October 2013 ENJOY No 83

It is a rare exhibition in which the discourse among the artists, the poetry in our being that inspires them, and the audience melts into a seamless whole, distilled and reborn. The emotions expressed through the art works appear in bodily forms as dancers glide past the crowd. The light and sound transcend sensory perceptions; staccato becomes visual; shades and texture become auditory. Every visitor to the exhibition has a unique trajectory, but the forces driving them never collide; that space can accommodate the entire universe. e

GHANA – NIGERIA face - off in polo cup

A

s part of events marking Nigeria’s Independence day, a polo match was held between the Ghana team and a Nigerian team. Defending their title at the Accra Polo Club, Ghana were not lucky and the Nigerian team got their revenge.

This sweet revenge by the Nigerians marks another point in the rivalry between the two sporting giants of West Africa. Team Ghana though gracious in defeat were last seen plotting their comeback. Team Ghana were sponsored by Vodafone whilst Team Nigeria’s sponsors for the tournament were Access Bank. e

Colombian /ghanaian cultural event

O

n 24 September the Colombian Ambassador, Her Excellency Claudia Turbay Quintero and Hon Alfred Vanderpuije, Mayor of Accra, hosted a cultural event at the Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra. A host of young Colombians along with Ghanaian cultural groups provided an extravaganza of music and dance. The visiting Colombians were from Buenaventura, a port on the Pacific Ocean in West

Colombia. They played ‘currulao music’, African influenced music played on marimba and drums. Cultural groups like this one are organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombia to engage the youth and provide a healthy alternative to juvenile deliquency.

aame Arhin, has been appointed CEO of Viasat 1 Ghana with effect from 1 November, 2013. She replaces Charlotte Gustavsson, who is returning to Sweden after spending three years as head of the company. During her tenure as CEO, Charlotte and her team increased viewership, taking 24% of the market, held the number 2 position among the free-to-air television stations in Ghana, and Viasat1 ranked number 1 in Greater Accra and the Western Region. Charlotte also successfully launched both news and the new breakfast show “This Morning” and brought football back to the screen in the form of the Barclay’s Premier League.

“Maame has quickly established herself as a key member of the Viasat1 management team since coming on board earlier this year.”

Charlotte’s successor Maame, joined Viasat1 earlier this year as Chief Operating Officer. Maame previously both studied and worked in the US for over a decade, holding positions such as “Senior Investment Analyst” Chantelle Asante 20 | October 2013 ENJOY No 83

Joseph Hundah, Executive Vice President of MTG’s African broadcasting operations said “Maame has quickly established herself as a key member of the Viasat1 management team since coming on board earlier this year. She has performed at the highest level and proven an inspirational leader of the team as the operations have gone from strength to strength! Maame was therefore the natural choice to lead Viasat1 Ghana – which celebrates its fifth birthday in December this year – into the next exciting phase of the channel’s development.” Mr. Hundah continues: “On behalf of MTG Africa, I would also like to thank Charlotte for her considerable contribution to the success of Viasat1 during a period of great change and growth. She has been a valued colleague and widely respected manager. We wish her the very best in all that she does in the future” e

presence at the soccer fiesta in Brazil in 2014 is a must for many footballing nations; besides the economic and branding opportunities that the tournament brings to participating countries, for many a Ghanaian, the Black Stars must shine and raise high the flag. Ghana must be in Brazil because we are the only country in the World with 25 million coaches and when it comes to the game of football everything stops to make way for the beautiful game. Ghana is looking forward to becoming the first African Country to have qualified successively for 3 championships. The last hurdle to Ghana’s qualification, the Pharaohs of Egypt. The Stars lived up to their billing and gave the Pharaohs a 6 goal walloping at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi. The shell shocked and mummified Egyptian team had no response to the determined Black Stars.

sports “As the Stars prepare for the second leg in Egypt, the words of the Egyptian coach Bob Bradley “if we don’t manage to make a miracle then I’ll be finished”.”

Egypt’s woes started early when Asamoah Gyan put the first goal past the Egyptian keeper in the early minutes of the game, then followed an own goal when Michael Essien single-handedly walked the ball from midfield into Egypt’s penalty box, and deflected it off Wael Gomma. The only consolation for the Pharaohs was a penalty taken swiftly when a Mohamed Aboutrika miss directed the goalie to pull one back for Egypt. Any hopes of an Egyptian comeback were dashed when the team came back from half time with Asamoah Gyan doing a personal double and a fourth for the stars. Veteran Sulley Muntari then tagged on a fifth through a penalty whilst Christian Atsu sealed the game with an 89 minute silencer. As the Stars prepare for the second leg in Egypt, the words of the Egyptian coach Bob Bradley “if we don’t manage to make a miracle then I’ll be finished” resonates in my thoughts but I am hoping for more Ghanaian miracles on that day. e

Remember the Christmas when on our way from Chelsea you fell on pavements broke a tooth and I was mute? Your mother thought I was cruel, but your fall hurt me in that all of us, your clansmen, fell on alien ground Remember the morning walks
 to your nanny’s
where you sulked and longed for home
the agony of flights and
the pain of separation looming
 large like winter moons.
I knew I was the tempest
that will blast your youth
and misery of infancy.
Oh, I was the Abraham
 sacrificing my Isaac
waiting in vain for the ram in the thicket
for dreams long forgotten under tropical suns.
But what could I have done?
Was I not aware of coming prophecies
certainties
the final estrangement
prepared in secrecy
by the intervening gods of my household?
 No. I was not seeking
 an athanasia; how can I
the epilogue of my own long torment
nderstand the prologue I dreamed you to be? u

The Parenting Reality: A Blueprint A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops. —Henry Brooks Adams “Great teachers focus on what the student is saying or doing, and are able, by being so focused and by their deep knowledge of the subject matter, to see and recognize the inarticulate stumbling, fumbling effort of the student who’s reaching toward mastery, and then connect to them with a targeted message.” I couldn’t agree more with Daniel Coyle, author of the Talent Code, a book that ALL parents must read. As parents, we are the first ‘teachers’ of our children. They learn many things from us parents: mores, mannerisms, behaviour, attitude, faith, etc.; however one salient ingredient they learn is to value themselves in the world. John Wooten, the most acclaimed college basketball coach in history said, “I am not going to treat you players all the same. Giving you the same treatment doesn’t make sense, because you’re all different. The good Lord, in his infinite wisdom, did not make us all the same. For that reason, each one of you deserves individual treatment that is best for you. I will decide what that treatment will be.” As a teacher I definitely understand that you must treat every child fairly but maybe not equally as in the sense of interests and ability.

32 | October 2013 ENJOY No 83

As parents we may not want to admit openly to our children that we treat them differently or we may want to treat them differently because of their uniqueness and physical/emotional needs. However, the praise of effort or praising effort enough is crucial in a child’s development, it creates value for self. Professor Dweck is a social psychologist at Stanford University says, “when we praise children for their intelligence, we tell them that’s the name of the game: look smart, don’t risk making mistakes.” In a study conducted by Dweck, there were two groups of students – the “praised-for-effort group” and the “praised-for-intelligence group” – their responses were very different to the situation. “(The effort group) dug in and grew very involved with the test, trying solutions, testing strategies,” Dweck said. “They later said they liked it. But the group praised for intelligence hated the harder test. They took it as proof they weren’t smart.” The experiment then came full circle, returning to a test of the same difficulty as the initial test. The praised-for-effort group improved their initial score by 30 per cent, while the praised-for-

Jabari Akil, counsellor, educational consultant & leadership specialist

intelligence group’s score declined by 20 per cent. All because of six short letters...effort. Dweck was so surprised at the result that she reran the study five times. Each time the result was the same. True to the findings of Dweck’s study, progressive schools and homes I visited over the years used language that affirmed the value of effort and slow progress rather than innate talent or intelligence. e

“Great teachers focus on what the student is saying or doing, and are able, by being so focused and by their deep knowledge of the subject matter, to see and recognize the inarticulate stumbling, fumbling effort of the student who’s reaching toward mastery, and then connect to them with a targeted message.”

INFANTA MALARIA PREVENTION FOUNDATION PRESENTS: ‘A NIGHT OF CLASSICAL MUSIC’ “Founded in February 2005, IMPF is a non-profit non-governmental organization with membership drawn from Ghanaian women and women from different countries resident in Ghana.”

L

eading charity, Infanta Malaria Prevention Foundation (IMPF), is organizing a formal classical music concert and reception on Saturday 9th November 2013, to raise funds to build a Community-based Health Planning Service (CHPS). Taking place at the College of Physician and Surgeons in Accra, the concert will feature leading classical performers including: Kokui Selormey (Ghanaian Opera Singer), Eva Lind (Austrian Operatic Soprano), Antonio Watts (American Baritone) and Robin Holloway (Pianist from the USA). Last year’s concert raised funds which went towards building the Kobedi Clinic. The funds raised from this year’s concert will go towards building a clinic for Adenkrebi and its surrounding communities. Adenkrebi community is in the Ga East municipality located on the Akwapim Hills in the northern border between Greater Accra and the Eastern Region. With the neighbouring communities: Ayim, Agyemanti, Seapue and Kponkpo, these five communities are not only hard to reach but also have a combined population of 6,425 people without any access to healthcare. The project intends to construct a CHPS facility to provide health care services, train community based surveillance volunteers (CBSV) and other community workers on home based-care for malaria, drug

treatment as well as to take the community through education on preventive measures for malaria and to improve maternal health care services. A Community Health Officer (CHO), with midwifery skills will be posted by the district health authority to live in the CHPS compound to assist in delivering healthcare to the people within the community. Founded in February 2005, IMPF is a non-profit non-governmental organization with membership drawn from Ghanaian women and women from different countries resident in Ghana. The charity’s mission is to raise awareness about malaria by bringing the message of prevention, eradication to poor communities across Ghana. The charity’s success to date lies in their ability to reach remote rural villages and to provide all important testing and treatment for people, free of charge. IMPF has a single goal of combating malaria through collaboration with leaders in malaria research and through educational and social projects across urban and rural Ghana. By reaching every Ghanaian village, Infanta is seeking to eradicate malaria in Ghana one village at a time. IMPF have distributed thousands of insecticide treated nets across For more information about the charity please visit www.infantamalaria.org. In many households across the world, the scales are the one piece of equipment gathering more dust than the treadmill. A common way to gloss over our weight problems is to avoid going on the scales altogether; we go by the mantra “If I don’t see that I’ve gained weight, then I don’t have to believe it”. Everyone’s weight naturally fluctuates so don’t panic if you’ve gained a couple of pounds here and there, but if you gain more than five pounds, you should probably reign in your eating habits. Checking your weight on a regular basis allows you to nip it in the bud if you discover a weight problem – llosing the odd few pounds is much easier than trying to shed a stone.

You worry about the meeting at work, you worry about putting the bins out, you worry that you might forget to feed the cat, and it’s really getting you down. Whilst stress can be positive in helping to keep you alert and avoid danger, too much of it can be detrimental to your health. Endless worrying eventually leads to distress which causes headaches, high blood pressure, an upset stomach, chest pain, and sleep deprivation. Whilst it’s natural to worry when you have a deadline looming, panicking too much about petty things needs to be sorted. When you’re worrying, ask yourself a few simple questions and answer them as honestly as you can. Will you still be worrying about this in a couple of week’s time? Can this problem be easily resolved? If you can’t let it go, tackle the problem head on until it is resolved. If you can learn how to control your worrying, you’re well on your way to a happier, healthier lifestyle. e

To brine the turkey, remove the turkey from wrapper, remove interior bags (set aside; refrigerate), and rinse turkey thoroughly under cool water. Place the turkey into a plastic brining bag or a very large pot.

» » » » » » » »

2 gallons water 2 cups apple juice 1 1/2 cups kosher salt 2 cups brown sugar 5 cloves garlic, crushed 5 bay leaves 4 tablespoons black peppercorns 2 tablespoons dried rosemary

» » » » »

3 oranges, peeled, white pith removed, skin roughly chopped 1 (20-pound) fresh turkey 1 1/2 sticks softened butter 3 tablespoons minced fresh rosemary leaves 3 tablespoons chopped orange zest

«

Ingredients

Pour the cooled brine mixture over the top, adding extra cold water if you need more to completely cover the turkey. Seal the bag or cover the pot and allow the turkey to brine in the refrigerator for 16 to 24 hours before roasting. Before roasting, remove the turkey from brine and rinse thoroughly under cold water. Then soak in a sink full of fresh water for 15 to 20 minutes. Pat dry. Discard brine. (This soaking process will decrease the likelihood of too-salty gravy). Preheat the oven 275 degrees F. Truss the bird and place it breast side up on a rack in a large roasting pan. Cover the turkey tightly with heavy-duty foil. Make sure it’s entirely covered (cover over the bottom edges of the pan). Place in the oven and roast for about 10 minutes per pound (a 20 pound turkey will roast for about 3 1/2 hours). Remove the turkey from the oven and increase the temperature to 375 degrees F. Remove the aluminum foil and set aside. Mix the softened butter with the rosemary and orange peel and rub all over the skin of the turkey, covering every single inch of the skin. Insert a meat thermometer into the thigh, near the hip joint. Place the turkey, uncovered, back into the oven. Continue roasting the turkey, basting with butter every 30 minutes, until the thermometer registers 170 degrees F and until the juices are no longer pink. Remove from the oven and cover with foil until you are ready to carve and serve. Reserve pan juices to make gravy.

Famous Libra : Gabrielle Union BORN: OCTOBER 29, 1972 - OMAHA, NEBRASKA, USA Actress Gabrielle Union has risen to fame with a variety of comic roles, including 10 Things I Hate About You, Bring It On, and The Honeymooners. Her special blend of beauty and wit comes courtesy of a terrific Sun-Moon combination. A Natal Sun in sultry Scorpio gives her tremendous sex appeal, while her Natal Moon in Leo gives her a need for lighthearted fun. Despite her desire for a purpose-driven life, she’ll never take herself too seriously. Maybe that’s why audiences respond so readily to her onscreen persona. Famous Libra : Joaquin Phoenix BORN: OCTOBER 28, 1974 - SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO These days, Joaquin Phoenix is as famous for his eccentricity as he is for his acting. After successful performances in Gladiator, Quills, and Walk the Line, Phoenix announced he was leaving acting to pursue a career in music. Fear of being a one-trick pony stems from his natal Mercury in Libra, the sign of balance. It’s possible he fears that if he puts too much emphasis on one area, his other gifts will dry up. Fortunately, his Scorpio Sun allows this talented actor to reinvent himself many times

Aries 21/3-20/04

Taurus 21/4-21/05

Gemini 22/5-21/06

Tune into the power of compromise this month, dear Aries, as it is what works wonders for you now. Recognizing your need for others in your life, rather than resisting all support, is important in October. The 8th brings accountability with a partner or with finances, taxes, and other money matters. The need to get serious arises, or a reality check is in order. You’ll likely revisit these matters from a new perspective in the last few days of the month. From the 7th forward, your love life tends to lighten up, although it’s not the time for making any commitments. Your tastes are more exotic now, and this extends beyond romantic interests. You are a little more courageous and secure about what you’re offering the world, particularly from the 7-15 when you have both Venus and Mars supporting you. Even so, watch for romantic and financial illusions on the 9-10, when you may be believing only what you want to believe.

Work is certainly in strong focus this month, dear Taurus, but you’ll also get the chance to have some fun, especially from the 15th forward, when Mars enlivens and animates your sector of entertainment, romance, and creativity. After the long hours, you can find some time to play. Getting organized on the home front is a big job, but ultimately satisfying, up until mid-month. Saturn has been bringing stability, increased responsibilities, and possibly some stark reality checks to your love life, but this month, you can realize some of the benefits of your connections. For one, you’re expanding your horizons, and for another, you’re making fresh connections with others. A new or renewed commitment may be made around the 8th, although there may be some refinements to make, and possibly some regrets to nurse, towards the end of the month. Avoid over-committing at this time. Relationships intensify from the 7th forward.

While there can certainly be some drama in your social life this month, dear Gemini, October promises to be one of the more pleasurable months of the year. Self-discipline may be lacking, but you deserve to let your hair down and express yourself both creatively and spontaneously. There will be some more serious days in the month, likely around the 8th and 29th, for example, when work or health requires some accountability or possibly a commitment. However, think twice before taking on too much. In fact, when it comes to work and health, be vigilant with the details. Until mid-month, you can find much enjoyment in learning, connecting, writing, and otherwise reaching out, after which family affairs are lively and at times demanding. Your social life picks up pace from the 7th, when Venus enters your opposite sign (Sagittarius). This can be a time when a partner is especially pleasant, or when happy, supportive people enter your life.

Cancer 22/6-23/07

Libra 24/9-23/10

Capricorn 22/12-20/01

Issues surrounding family and career capture a lot of your attention this month, dear Cancer. Certainly, you have been pulled in many different directions lately, and October is no exception. However, it’s a time for reconnecting with family and domestic responsibilities, as well as with your own center. Getting to your spiritual center can be difficult, but not impossible, with the help of a New Moon on the 4th. There may be a reality check around the 8th surrounding a romance, relationship with a child, or a creative endeavor. This will be revisited again in the last week of the month, and then once more in November.

You are pulled in so many directions these days, dear Libra, and while this continues in October, the Sun in your sign until the 23rd as well as a New Moon in Libra on the 4th suggest that it’s time to take some of that power back. It’s a time for paying more attention to your own needs, wants, and desires. You’ll have the most energy as well as the gumption until the 15th, with Mars supporting you. Venus is your ruler and is in Sagittarius from the 7th forward. This brings lively, fun, communicative, and sociable energy into your life. You are attracting others mainly with your wit and your willingness to reach out.

October is likely to be a busy and strong month for business, dear Capricorn. This month, you’re in the position to prove your worth, and you’re coming across with dynamism and confidence, even if part of you privately worry about your performance. Although challenges and stress could be part of the picture, strong career opportunities - based on past and present performance - present themselves, and it’s up to you to seize them. Romance is more private from the 7th forward, and so can some of your career activities - even though you are more visible than usual with the Sun in your career and reputation sector until the 23rd, much is going on behind the scenes.

Scorpio 24/10-22/11 Leo 24/7-23/08 With fiery Mars transiting your sign until the 15th, dear Leo, you are making a strong impression and you are enjoying increased energy and stamina. You are on the go during this period, and adventure finds you, particularly around the Lunar Eclipse on the 18th. This might also be a time when you get published or a project culminates. You are especially communicative in October, willing to discuss virtually everything under the sun. From the 7th, Venus transits your romance, creativity, and entertainment sector, supporting your Sun and subtly but effectively boosting your personal appeal. Watch, however, for unintentionally misleading someone on the 9-10.

Virgo 24/8-23/09 You have opportunities to be happily and profitably productive this month, dear Virgo. Ideas you have been toying with for some time might be put into action now. A loan or other financial settlement could be part of the picture as well, although for some of you, there can be a sudden scurrying with finances. This is a period when getting money matters organized is necessary and satisfying. Debts and sharing of assets can be an issue that has been causing some stress, as this area of your life may be up in the air or the victim of some neglect. You can be immersed in your own projects these days, but don’t let lack of interest keep you from seeing important details.

Your soul sector is strong this month, dear Scorpio, suggesting that you should focus on spiritual renewal, dealing with matters that need to be put behind you, and getting extra rest and time for reflection. While the Sun enters your sign on the 23rd, Mercury in Scorpio turns retrograde around the same time, further pointing to the need to re-assess key elements of your life. While focusing on the past is appropriate, do so with an eye for making improvements. Watch for negativity and focusing too heavily on past grievances, especially around the 8th and 29-31. A journal can help if difficult buried matter surfaces, which is quite likely. Positively, you might be asked - and valued - for your opinion around these dates.

Sagittarius 23/11-21/12 Friendships are in high focus this month, dear Sagittarius, but not necessarily easy. In fact, some of you may be severing ties with a friend or group, while others may simply experience tensions. Happily, Venus enters your sign on the 7th, where it will transit for approximately a month. This not only boosts your personal magnetism, it might also bring a new and happy friendship into your life. The 16-18 is especially powerful for your love and social life. Surprises and drama are part of the picture now. You may be bringing something new to your manner or appearance that wins you extra attention. There are few better times to put yourself out there. Around the same time, career and public life begin to bring their demands.

Aquarius 21/01-19/02 A case of wanderlust takes hold of you this month, dear Aquarius. Day-to-day details simply don’t appeal. Before you set your sights on bigger and better horizons, however, do make sure that the important matters, including your career, are taken care of. There can be some sticky problems surrounding business or reputation to deal with, particularly after the 21st. Fortunately, Mars moving into your solar eighth house on the 15th gives you extra energy for doing some deep research, so that if you are required to redo or refine work, you’re especially equipped to do so.

Pisces 20/02-20/03 Time spent getting in touch with your deepest needs and desires, and perhaps ridding yourself of bad habits, is time very well spent this month. Intimate and deeply personal matters capture your attention. It’s a strong period for research of any kind, intimately connecting with loved ones, and self-improvement programs. If quitting bad habits are health-related, take full advantage of Mars’ transit of your solar sixth house until the 15th, bringing increased energy and motivation for health and fitness efforts. From the 7th, social connections on the job can be both pleasing and profitable. Your increased ability to smooth over differences is especially helpful if Mars stirs up some conflicts with co-workers. ENJOY No 83 October 2013 | 49
