Hitti Group, Proudly Ghanaian

T

he Hitti Group of which NESSTRA is a subsidiary was established in 1969 by the late Robert Habib HITTI. Robert Habib HITTI, was an astute businessman and entrepreneur who used his valuable experience to start a small business in Ghana. It all started in Accra, on a little two acre piece of land in North Industrial Area, where he established Duraplast, today a leading producer of HDPE and PVC pipes. Duraplast caters and supplies PVC and HDPE pipes for the construction, mining, borehole, gas industries as well as for the

water distribution and telecom industries. Robert Hitti’s resolve did not end there and four years later, in 1973, QUALIPLAST, a leading producer of plastics was created. QUALIPLAST is a leader in the production of plastics for domestic usage such as buckets , bowls , pans , dustbins , tables and chairs and industrial applications such as plastic crates for the biggest breweries in West Africa and the fishing industry . Mr Hitti’s corporate expansion drive led to the creation of the Ashanti Foam factory, popularly known as ASHFOAM in Kumasi in 1976. ASHFOAM is a leading brand in the Ghanaian and West African markets

as a producer of quality foam products such as mattresses, foam sheets, pillows and linens for the domestic and hotel market. Robert’s three children Alwan, Caroline and Mireille who are second generation Hitti’s, joined the family business after completing their education in the 1980’s and 90’s. Following the ill-fated demise of Mr Robert Hitti in 2001, the children took control of the direction of the group and have moved it to even greater heights in West Africa and the World. In 2012, Mr Bob Hitti, son of Alwan Hitti, joined the Hitti Group introducing the third generation of the Hitti family in the business. Bob is the first of six grandchildren of Robert and Theresa Hitti to join the family business.

Interview

with Mr Bob Hitti, G.M Nesstra Ghana

Mr Bob Hitti is the young and energetic General Manager of Nesstra Ghana. He comes from 3 generations of Hitti businessmen and women. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Brunel University as well as a Masters in International Business with specialization in Operations Management from the Grande Ecole IESEG in Lille, France (one of the top 5 French Business Schools). He has been with Nesstra Ghana since June 2012 and brings on board a refreshing disposition that sees things accomplished as a team. In our continuing Enjoy Special Corporate Reports series, follow our senior correspondent Alain Gbeasor to the offices of Mr Bob Hitti, General Manager of Nesstra Ghana as we get an insight into the activities of Nesstra, and what they do in Ghana. Alain GBEASOR (AG): Good morning Mr. Hitti and thank you for the opportunity to interview you. Mr. Bob Hitti (BH): You are welcome and thank you for the opportunity of introducing Nesstra to your readers AG: Can you tell us more about your activities at Nesstra Services, I’m so excited to learn that a Ghanaian Group has acquired a UK company?

Mr Bob Hitti,

General Manager Nesstra Ghana

8 | July-August 2013 ENJOY No 81

BH: Yes indeed, Nesstra is a new affiliate of the Hitti Group. I want to take the opportunity to congratulate our board of directors, Mrs Theresa Hitti, Mr Alwan Hitti, Ms Mireille Hitti, Mr Fares Aki, Mrs Caroline Aki and Mr Daniel Tetteh for such a vision. In a bid to bring quality to our continental market and expand our brand name even further, the Hitti Group acquired in 2008 one of the leading and trusted suppliers of quality chemicals, materials and machinery to Africa, Nesstra Services.

Nesstra Services UK core business is the sale of raw material to the foam industry in Africa. The company operates in 27 African countries and is one of the largest suppliers of foam chemicals to Africa. Nesstra is also entering the supply of plastic raw material to the African continent and we expect to have similar success in the next few years. We are also active in the basic chemical market range and set up a new team to concentrate on this aspect of the business. We also have a strong technical department responsible for providing large scale electrical projects and machinery for the food and juice industry through our Alfa Laval brand.

Nesstra Interview AG: You have so many international brands in your showroom can you tell us about them? BH: At Nesstra, We operate a one-stop shop concept in our showroom; offering our customers a wide variety of products in one location. A customer who walks into our showroom can purchase his electrical needs from our ABB range, as well as all paint requirements from our Suvinil range. All installation works that require power tools are also available from our HILTI products range. Power is also a necessity nowadays and we offer Perkins Generators. The showroom is also connected to ASHFOAM’s showroom allowing our customers to purchase their mattresses, bed sheets, bedspreads, pillows, towels and furniture among other products in the ASHFOAM Shop. Additionally, you can find our McQuay air conditioners as well as Duraplast’s PVC and HDPE pipes. What more can you ask for in a shopping experience, all your needs under one roof.

Our leading brands

AG: How well are you positioned on the Ghanaian market with all these big brands?

AG: Your brands are all global leaders, how do you incorporate brands in your product portfolio?

BH: We are currently experiencing a period of growth that is the result of a well thought out strategy. Our growth at the moment is 70% on a year-to-date basis and we expect further growth in the coming years. The majority of our brands are very well known to the market, with the latest brand additions to the portfolio experiencing solid growth that will lead to an increased market share in the next couple of years.

BH: It is important to mention that adding brands to our portfolio is not just to look good. Every brand added is carefully studied; we have in place a strong team which operates independently and grows the expectation of all stakeholders. Every year we are approached by leading brands to represent them in Ghana and Africa. As I speak, we are in advanced discussion with two leading labels that are likely to be introduced as part of Nesstra’s portfolio in the third and fourth quarters of this year.

July-August 2013 ENJOY No 81 | 9

ENJOY AG: How does your strong brand presence play on market competitiveness?

AG: Based on your answer, you seem to value strongly your human resource. Tell us more.

BH: All our brands stand aside when it comes to quality. We only deal with the best brands and this policy is strictly respected. With this policy comes a clear advantage to our customers as they have the assurance of the best quality and a customized service. Another competitive advantage we have is that we offer our customers, a one-stop solution centre for all their construction needs. The construction industry relies on a wide network of suppliers for various products; this can be a challenge as sourcing will require a lot of time and know how. Nesstra solves this problem by providing a wide variety of product in its range allowing companies to source products for their construction project with one supplier who offers the best quality products, flexible payment terms and a reliable support team.

BH: In the HITTI group, we believe the origin of our success is our people. We have a mix of highly experienced young and dedicated people with a passion for what they do and without such a committed team, we wouldn’t be where we are today. For example, we have combined experience in the Suvinil department of over 100 years in the paint industry, ABB team has over 52 years of combined experience and Hilti has over 33 years of combined experience. Such highly experienced members bring a lot to the company; consequently the future is bright because our more experienced members mentor our new and younger members to build an even stronger team for the future.

AG: What does Nesstra aspire to and what are your core values? BH: Nesstra aspires to be a leading provider of services and product to the African market, adding value in the supply chain to our customers and partners. We are driven by customer satisfaction, which is achieved by creating value, always making a difference and continuously striving to exceed our customer’s needs and expectations. We stand strong on the fact that all this is only achievable through the efforts of our young, dynamic and motivated team.

10 | July-August 2013 ENJOY No 81

AG: You are young, ambitious with a dynamic team, what would you say the future holds for Nesstra?

BH: Sustainable growth is key to Nesstra’s vision of the future. This was developed over the years where directors, managers and employees were encouraged to incorporate continuous improvement and growth to their agenda. As part of the group’s culture, we will continue our growth at the current high pace every year. In the HITTI Group, we believe in the development of our teams and therefore support them in their development, be it social or academic. Many of our staff are supported with health insurance and the wards of some of them have qualified for educational scholarships up to university level. AG: Mr Hitti, what will be your final words to our readers? BH: I encourage your readers to patronize all the products from the Hitti Group, we have in stock a range of products that will satisfy all their needs. In a nutshell, my advice is - every home in Ghana should have a product from the Hitti Group range. e AG: Thank you!

This Month Leo A ries 21/3-20/04

Taurus 21/4-21/05

Gemini 22/5-21/06

Your main areas of focus this month, dear Aries, are work and family, with a little time for pleasure-seeking as well! In fact, you can take much pleasure in nurturing your own needs, as there are plenty of forces that prompt you to turn inward this month. You may not be quite as spontaneous or impulsive. Building your nest figures strongly in July, but so does getting organized. The cosmos are nudging your attention in the direction of home and family, and getting everything in order in this life department. This might require some changes in your approach to career, and some schedule juggling. Not everything around the home is likely to run smoothly with Mercury retrograde in your family and home sector until the 20th, but it's a great time for picking up where you left off on older projects. Following the dictates of your heart will serve you most this month, except when it comes to finances. Saturn's direct turn on the 8th moves business and financial affairs forward with more clarity, but also more responsibility!

There can be a lot of talk in the first three weeks of July about the past, and especially about relationships, dear Taurus. This can be constructive in order to put things to rest or to ease your mind. From the 8th, responsibilities in a partnership, or loneliness, could be magnified, but there is considerably more clarity and a stronger sense of what needs to be done to feel stronger and to strengthen a relationship. Restlessness this month can be turned into productivity if you find the right channel for your excess energy. There are errands to run, calls and emails to make, and paperwork to sort out. Do your best to tend to these matters in an orderly fashion, making lists and following them, or you could put yourself through unnecessary stress. Plan ahead when it comes to communications and transportation, fixing any potential problem areas that could lead to breakdowns. From the 16-22, a Grand Trine can help motivate you to go forward with a learning endeavor, partnership, or a personal goal or cause.

Money matters come into focus for you in July, dear Gemini, when discussions and ideas about finances and material security figure strongly. You may be tempted to spend extra money on things that will make your life more comfortable and pleasant, and work that needs to be done in and around the home becomes a priority. Although a relatively quiet month is in store, you have many opportunities to boost your feelings of security and comfort. With Mercury retrograde in your finance and possessions sector until the 20th, the need to sort out your finances becomes apparent. The Grand Trine energy occurring from the 16-22 can mean many things for you, and can benefit partnerships, finances, career, work, and health. More responsibility as well as clarity comes to a work or health program, and this a good time to schedule visits to the doctor, for acquiring new fitness and wellness materials, and for self-care endeavors in general. It's all about structure and organization, as these things will truly empower you in your daily routines.

HOROSCOPE

Cancer 22/6-23/07

Libra 24/9-23/10

Capricorn 22/12-20/01

While you are certainly still tending to the past and complicated feelings this month, dear Cancer, personal opportunities are surfacing, particularly expressive and creative ones. Typically a New Moon in your sign, occurring on the 8th, brings a blast of energy that seems to yell “go!”, but you are still a little tentative about where you’re headed. It won’t be until around the 20-22 when you really feel it. Strong feelings might stir you into action as you pursue a special cause or a long-standing dream. You have the chance to show your creativity on the job this month, and advances or bonuses may be in the offing. When faced with sticky matter from the past, forgive yourself, learn from it, and move forward.

This month, you could experience both increased recognition and some stumbling blocks in your career, dear Libra. Financial responsibilities become clearer from the 8th. The need for self-discipline becomes apparent. Fortunately, you are more motivated to work hard and apply your energies constructively than usual. The 8-10 presents an opportunity period for you. Receiving news about the past that gives you new information about your current circumstances figures strongly now. Behind the scenes projects also capture your interest, even if your life feels very public just now. Strong opportunities for love and fun occur on the 7th and 28-30. An important connection may be made that helps give life to a work-related dream or that influences your career choices. While there could be a change of position for some, for many of you July is about new commitments.

Close relationships require some attention in July, dear Capricorn, and playing a supportive role is important now. You may need to step back and review the past before moving forward, however. All is resolved in your favor by the last week of July - a time when personal finances also peak. A new beginning with a partner is possible now. Certainly, your attitudes towards partnering is changing dramatically. This is the time to work with others, not against them, putting forth an equal effort in any partnership. Negotiating and one-on-one relationships figure strongly. Work is especially stimulating in the first half of July, when you can feel especially motivated to get things done. Two important changes occur this month involving your planetary ruler, Saturn. On the 8th, Saturn turns direct, and this brings clearer vision and improved motivation.

L eo 24/7-23/08 Leos tend to “hibernate” a little in the first few weeks of July, and this year is no exception. However, dear Leo, you have Venus in your sign until the 22nd, bringing plenty of admiring attention your way, and Mars stimulating demands from your peers until the 13th, so you’ll have to do some juggling. Closing projects and withdrawing a little from the busy pace of your life is in order. Periods when you completely relax and retreat, removing yourself from everyday affairs, will be especially beneficial. Family responsibilities are magnified from the 8th forward, but you can be spurred into taking positive action this month to improve your domestic life. Some of you might gain property or support from family, or a loan for a home or home improvement. There may be changes necessary in your job or health routines. Secrets and whispers delight this month, and you may willingly make a few sacrifices to be with a special someone.

Virgo 24/8-23/09 July is a month of inspiration, new connections, and careful thought, dear Virgo. With Jupiter now in your solar eleventh house, you are likely to expand your social life and friends base, and to dream up exciting new paths for the future. You could easily be misunderstood by friends, however, in the first few weeks of July, who could be dredging up the past. Mind you, until the 20th, you may very well feel a little stuck. Personal plans get a green light after that date. Before then, refining or reworking projects already in progress can be more successful. This month, expressing your uniqueness is especially important to you, and the need to work cooperatively within the framework of a group of people is likely to figure strongly. Nevertheless, your independent side reigns, and you could find yourself one step ahead of everyone else when it comes to new and progressive ideas.

Scorpio 24/10-22/11

Events in July bring up issues of freedom and mobility for you, dear Scorpio. You may be feeling restless and restrained, and the need to put some spice and adventure into your life is powerful. You have a strong interest in broadening your mental experiences in general, and finding expression of your personality through them, perhaps through higher education or exploring different philosophies of life. Travel and adventure reinforce a sense of personal fulfillment. Prophetic visions might even be part of the picture now. The best time of the month for personal magnetism occurs on the 17-22, when others find it easy to see your perspective on matters. You have recently become very serious about your long-term goals, and this month you are especially motivated to put your plans and dreams into action.

Sagittarius 23/11-21/12 July is a month for developing strategies and plans, dear Sagittarius, and for taking a more inward, introspective turn. Selfpromotion and business activities thrive later this month. Love is spicy, stimulating, sometimes challenging. Your personal plans might be on hold for now as you tend to others’ needs. Changes in your income, or that of a partner, are possible now. Despite some complications, you have Lady Luck on your side. Your ruler, Jupiter, is part of a magical Grand Trine that brings both inspiration and structure to your life. This points to dreams that have a strong chance of turning into a reality. Goals are inspired and imaginative, but also realizable. Power dates for the Grand Trine are the 16-22, but note that beginning an entirely new venture is best done after the 20th. Combining your own resources, talents, or money with a partner can improve your own financial outlook now.

A quarius 21/01-19/02 Changes in work or health routines are in the works, and July’s events alert you to the need for making necessary adjustments. Overall, July is a time to adapt and attract rather than initiate new projects or endeavors, dear Aquarius. It’s a month in which work that requires sharp thinking skills, as well as any services you render, comes into strong focus. Communication mishaps on the job until the 20th are turned into new opportunities to improve your skills. Recognition for all that you do is what you crave, and it’s likely to arrive during the powerful days of the Grand Trine, from the 16-22. This month, you might make new friends through or at your place of work, or for those who don’t have a place of work, while pursuing daily routines and health goals. Saturn’s direct motion in your career and reputation sector from the 8th forward can initially magnify responsibilities and possibly negative situations, but there is a stronger sense of where you’re headed and what you need to do to get there. Opportunities to increase your income or influence on the job arise in July.

Pisces 20/02-20/03 Personal charisma is with you this month, dear Pisces. While communications with romantic interests may continue to feel complicated (or downright evasive) until the 20th, after that date you get the opportunity to make right and then some! A romantic interest could surface on the job around the 7th, but may not be long-lasting. A Grand Trine and Grand Sextile this July make it an extra special month, and since Neptune, your ruler, in your own sign is involved, these configurations can really help you out. You can truly sell your ideas, creations, and personality to the world. Romantic relationships heat up, particularly from the 13th forward. Conflicts are likely part of the picture, but generally lead to greater mutual July-August No make 81 | 43 understanding - and2013 they ENJOY certainly for a lively time!

Gut Check: 10 Best and Worst Foods for Your Tummy 5 Worst Foods for Your Gut 1. Red meat The more red meat you eat, the higher your risk of colorectal cancer. That’s because it’s typically high in saturated fat, which is tied to cancer of the small intestine, according to a 2008 Cancer Research study. 2. Processed meat Lunch meats, hot dogs, sausages and other processed meats are packed with saturated fat, sodium and nitrates.Processed meats have been linked to colon cancer, possibly because they are cooked at high temperatures, which can increase carcinogens.

4. Gluten Gluten is a protein found in barley, rye, spelt, wheat and countless other foods such as processed meats, soy sauce, ice cream, cheese, cookies, pasta, ketchup, salad dressings and more. Food sensitivities affect 10%20% of us, and can cause lots of digestive complaints and stomach aches (gas, cramping, bloating, heartburn, indigestion) and other symptoms, including chronic headaches, aching

joints and muscles, depression, concentration, memory problems and poor energy levels. 5. Lactose Another cause of stomach ache is lactose, the principal sugar found in milk. Avoiding milk will help, but you don’t have to give up all dairy. Some lactose-intolerant people do fine with small amounts of milk. 5 Best Foods for Your Gut 1. Dietary fibre Our Pick: Prunes Fibre keeps things moving through your digestive system and out. Otherwise, your colon is stuck with toxins that can build up and cause major health problems. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes are all packed with healthy fibre. But when it comes to staying regular, prunes, because of their mild laxative effect, are the go-to fruit. They’re also a great source of energy, nutrition and disease-fighting phenolic compounds. 2. Probiotics Our Pick: Yogurt Probiotics are those “good bugs” you hear health nuts raving about. Why would anyone willingly eat bacteria? Because our intestinal flora is made up of trillions of good bacteria that aid in digestion and promote immunity and health. In fact, four pounds of our body weight comes from the bacteria that live in the digestive tract.

3. Prebiotics Our Pick: Lentils Prebiotics are food for probiotics. Prebiotics help good bacteria thrive while driving down the number of disease-producing bacteria trying to invade the digestive tract. Lentils, a legume, are a great natural source of prebiotics and dietary fibre. They’re a good substitute for red meat because of their high protein and iron content. To help your body better use the iron in lentils, prepare them with a vitamin C-rich food such as tomatoes. 4. Gluten-free grains Our Pick: Quinoa Gluten – a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye – isn’t necessarily bad for you. But it does cause stomach ache for many people. Expanding your grain repertoire is a good idea whether or not you’re gluten intolerant. Quinoa (pronounced “keen-wah”) is an excellent option. This glutenfree grain is a complete protein, and is fibre-rich and bursting with minerals. 5. Fermented foods Our Pick: Sourdough Eating fermented food increases our absorption of other nutrients food. Pickles, sauerkraut, kefir, miso, tempeh and Japanese tamari or soy sauce are all easy-to-digest fermented foods. So is sourdough. It can sub in for wheat bread if you’re sensitive to gluten. Sourdough breads are often made with wheat flour, but the fermentation weakens the gluten. e July-August 2013 ENJOY No 81 | 57

3. Hydrogenated oils Trans fats aren’t found in nature. They’re an inexpensive way to make fats last longer on supermarket shelves, but your body pays a high price: They’re tough to digest and have been linked to many health problems, including increased bad (LDL) cholesterol, decreased good (HDL) cholesterol and colon cancer.

“Gas, stomach aches, constipation and diarrhea are common signs your digestive system is off-kilter. But did you know that brittle hair and low energy can also point to tummy troubles? Find out which foods will keep your gut clogged or moving”…
