Letter from the Editor
My Friends, For three years in a row Cowbell has sponsored the National Cycling Tour and it is important to let you know just how big this sport has become in Ghana. Everywhere the teams rode they were met by huge crowds of spectators. The tour brought along journalists and TV crews who whilst covering the tour also brought Ghana into the living rooms of theirviewers. It was a national tourism fiesta, as we followed the cyclists we were also able to appreciate the beauty of the country . Prosper Agbo dethroned Henry Tetteh Djangmah to become the fastest cyclist in Ghana in 2013. We congratulate the organizers of this splendid event. In Burkina Faso, Togo and Cote D’Ivoire the sport of cycling is already popular and we are looking forward to the inclusion of international cyclists on the tour in years to come. Have you heard of Hash? They are that well known association of beer drinkers with a running problem. We encourage you to join them, go for a run (or walk), drink a beer and make some good friends in the process, visit their website www.accrahash.com for more information. Relations between Ghana and France have been given a major boost this month. First was the visit of a high level delegation of Business Executives from the French Business Association, Movement of the Enterprise of France (MEDEF) who met with the Minister of Finance, Honorable Seth Terkper. Secondly, His Excellency President John Mahama, undertook his first official visit to Paris at the invitation of his counterpart President Francois Holland. During the visit President Mahama held discussions with an African diplomatic corps caucus in France, Mr Abdoul Diouf, Secretary General of the Organization of Francophonie and his team, members of the business community as well as members of the Ghanaian community living in Paris. We invite you on this historic visit through our pages. These and many more stories make up this June edition of your favourite free magazine, read, share and comment. And ENJOY life. ...Enjoy Don’t forget you can also read the magazine online at: www.enjoyaccra.com

or the third time in a row, Promasidor Ghana Limited, organizers of the Cowbell National Cycling tour, have proven that they have what it takes to organize major events. From logistics, communication and the actual organization of this A-rated cycling event, this year’s tour was par excellence and indeed in addition to it being a competitive cycling race, it was an equally great festival of cycling. event, which promotes tourism like no other. They thronged the streets in anticipation of the arrival and subsequent crowning of the various trophy winners. In this year’s tour, from Accra to Adukrom, Kintampo to Koforidua or Techiman to Tamale, one cyclist stood out as the revelation of the tour. This was Samuel Anim, of the Young Stars Cycling Club, who completed the 103 km Accra-
Mankessim distance in a record 2 hours and 28 seconds to win the first stage of the 2013 Cowbell National Cycling Tour. He also won all of the 11 green jerseys and all 11 red jerseys that were up for grabs in the 1,313 km race. Demonstrating his dominance of the tour, in the last lap of Accra, Samuel won two of the five jerseys at hand; green and red jerseys (best by points and best finisher respectively).

Even though Samuel was not the overall yellow jersey winner, he proved to all competing in the race that in future tourneys he will be the cyclist to watch. His prowess was evident and at one point in the race, he was nine minutes behind the yellow jersey rider due to a technical problem, which halted him for close to five minutes. He defied all the odds in the mountainous range of the Koforidua stage and reduced the gap to less than a minute. His best was not good enough though to put him up as the last man standing. On the final day, Prosper Agbo, of City Migro club was declared winner of the 2013 event, taking home a giant trophy, cash of 7,000 Ghc and products from Promasidor and Pens & Plastics, sponsors of the Cowbell National Cycling Tour. The 2013 Tour will always be a memorable one for the performance put up by three of the most promising teenage cyclists Frank Akuffo, Anthony Boakye and Victor Cudjoe who, over the eleven stages, competed favourably with the most experienced cyclists.

W
hilst the last visit of a Ghanaian president to France dates back to 2007, the bilateral cooperation between Ghana and France would seem obvious only from the fourth Republic but our search in the archives show that as far back as Ghana’s independence days, there has

been co-operation between the two countries. It is reported that during the celebration of Ghana’s independence in March 1957, the young Ghana nation welcomed many emissaries from different countries which included at the time HE François Mitterrand, French emissary to Francophone West Africa, who later became President of France.

This Month Cancer A ries 21/3-20/04
Taurus 21/4-21/05
Gemini 22/5-21/06
he month begins with a scuffle of activity, learning, and communicating, dear Aries. Running errands, handling paper work, and networking are important matters now. Even so, things are slowly but surely settling down for you as you gear up for a homecentered, back to roots time. Jupiter’s entry into your sector of home and family at the end of June begins a year-long transit of home improvement. It’s not only about making your life at home and with family better; it’s also about getting into better touch with your own needs and desires. The year ahead will be a banner period for family, home, and domestic matters, and you’ll begin to feel this energy this month. The focus is on making your home life more spacious, whether this is literal and means either de-cluttering or moving to a bigger place, or if it’s about rearranging your home life in such a way that you feel better about your living conditions. Periods when you completely relax and retreat, removing yourself from everyday affairs, will be especially beneficial this month (and beyond).
There is a stronger desire to boost your income this month, dear Taurus. As long as you avoid impulse buys, you will come out ahead! Another theme threads through June with emphasis on your solar third house. Jupiter’s entry into this sector of your chart begins a year-long period in which doors open for you through new contacts and friendships, opportunities to learn and improve your skills, and sharper communications. You are filled with ideas and willing to take on new projects. Communications with others increase and bring much pleasure into your life. If you’ve been keeping to yourself lately (and many of you have), you’ll find that June brings circumstances that motivate you to reach out. The resources of a spouse or partner could help strengthen your own sense of security this month. Some Taureans are combining resources with someone as part of a new living arrangement, or otherwise sharing expenses. Another theme this month is sharing ideas with someone special.
June is a power month for you, dear Gemini, with the Sun, Mars, and Jupiter in your sign. You have a lot of energy to pursue your personal goals and interests, and you have the backing of others to further motivate you. Many of you will be making new friends and connections. While your larger focus this month is largely expressive and social, you have powerful energy for work and practical matters. Your natural talents and efforts can be recognized now. After the 8-9 is a good period for launching new projects or presenting finished products. Try not to overshoot, however, as you can feel invincible at times. Jupiter leaves your sign in the last week of the month, and this begins a new, year-long cycle in which you have a strong sense of abundance. Money matters can improve greatly, but you have to avoid over-indulgence in order for Jupiter’s promise to materialize. Mercury’s retrograde begins in the last week of the month, however, and this means that review is necessary before moving forward, particularly when it comes to your finances.

HOROSCOPE
Cancer 22/6-23/07
Libra 24/9-23/10
Capricorn 22/12-20/01
While June may begin a little sluggishly for you, dear Cancer, the month holds some powerful and exciting developments. The last week of June brings more overtly empowering experiences, when the desire or need to start fresh overcomes you, but there are a number of helpful nudges along the way. The first few weeks are quiet. For some, it’s about letting go. With Venus in your sign, you are certainly attracting attention and exuding charm, but your heart may not yet be ready to process it all. Several grand trines are formed this month activating a Saturn-Neptune trine that is especially favorable for you. This is a time for taking steps towards turning a dream into a reality, particularly on a creative level.
The month begins with a strong instinct for adventure, learning, and risk-taking, dear Libra. Your desire for experiences that reach beyond the usual routine is strong. Some of you will be satisfying this craving through adventuresome travel. Increasingly, however, your ambitions and sense of responsibility come into play. Jupiter, the planet of expansion, begins a new one-year cycle in the last week of June that brings opportunity and expansion into your professional life. Expanding your professional reach, developing your skills, and advancing your business will be strong themes in the coming year, and June offers you a taste of this. However, only a day later, Mercury turns retrograde in the same sector of your chart, and this points to the need to rethink goals. You may need to backtrack over work that you thought had been completed.
The month begins with plenty of work activity and energy for health and fitness routines, dear Capricorn. Getting organized and “back on track” is the focus now. You are willing to pour more time than usual into doing just that. Big news this month is Jupiter’s ingress into the sign of Cancer, where it will transit for just over a year. For you, this points to opportunity and development in the area of close personal relationships and partnerships. Many of you will attract or enhance a significant relationship in the coming year, and the beginnings of these new developments might even be happening as early as the last week of this month. Balancing your own needs with a significant other is not only easier, it’s rewarding and pleasant during this cycle. This month, there can be a stronger connection with friends or a group. You can successfully combine working towards your own personal goals and contributing to a team effort.
L eo 24/7-23/08
Your social calendar is busy much of the month, dear Leo, but you enjoy even the most hectic moments. The 12-14 and 1819 are especially strong for social and romantic opportunities, as well as creative enterprise, while the 3-4 can stimulate insecurities. From the 8th, you have a chance to begin anew when it comes to a friendship or the beginning steps of fulfilling a long-term dream. Others’ demands on your time can be large this month. You may have opportunities to join or lead clubs and groups. Group activities and associations could be avenues for fulfilling your own goals. As June progresses, however, you begin to retreat into yourself, as introspection is in order. The last week of the month brings a new Jupiter cycle. For you, it’s a cycle of regeneration, spiritual protection, and an increased desire to contribute to, and invest in, altruistic activities and causes.
Virgo 24/8-23/09 While June could bring some sobering moments, dear Virgo, new discoveries turn out to be empowering. It’s a month that stimulates you to make solid plans that give you a stronger sense of purpose and direction. Someone can inspire you to get moving on a long-time dream or to improve yourself, and possibly your family and home situation as well. Career and responsibilities are demanding in June. Some of you will be clearing the air with a boss or parent. Opportunities to improve your home life abound, as you’re taking more pride in your surroundings as a reflection of who you are. With Saturn in your solar third house since October, you may have been keeping a lot of your ideas and plans to yourself. Increasingly this month (and in the months ahead), you’ll be recognizing your need for people, and for sharing your thoughts as well, as you veer away from heavy attention to career and work.
Scorpio 24/10-22/11 The month begins with a strong need for inner change, transformation, and selfmastery, dear Scorpio. Your conviction to rid yourself of bad habits is stronger than usual. Increasingly through June, your focus turns outward. With Jupiter’s move into your solar ninth house, where it will transit for just over a year, wonderful energy for adventure, learning, and travel is with you. Your desire to expand your horizons and to reach out beyond your usual circles brings opportunity and reward. In June, you begin to “sample” these themes. You might also discover ways to turn a hobby into a business. You may be in the position to inspire others through what you create. Trips could be especially rewarding for you - they can provide a pleasant breather from pressures in your life.
Sagittarius 23/11-21/12 The month begins with a strong focus on your social life and a significant relationship, dear Sagittarius. Relationship matters are especially lively - full of conflicts and resolutions. Jupiter, your ruler, is changing signs in June - something that happens approximately once a year - and brings a strong emphasis on intimate relationships, financial expansion, and psychological growth now and in the year ahead. Partnerships deepen and bring rewards. Help seems to be magically there when you need it, and your own awesome strength and faith is always there to draw upon. You could be working on a project in solitude or behind the scenes, and when you do come out with it, it could be quite profitable. Periods when you completely relax and retreat, removing yourself from everyday affairs, will be especially beneficial.
A quarius 21/01-19/02 The month begins with a whirlwind of romantic and creative energy, dear Aquarius. You find it especially easy to pursue what you want, and your propositions are wellreceived. Your social life can improve greatly this month, particularly on the 18-19. Friends can introduce you to new relationships or work. Increasingly this month, your focus turns to work and practical matters. Jupiter enters your sector of work, health, and selfcare programs in the last week of June, and this begins a year-long cycle that brings nice opportunities in the areas of employment and health routines into your life. It’s time for a change that will reap rewards as the year unfolds. This influence enhances your ability to handle the details required to do a good job, and others become more aware of your skills. Even so, you should watch that you don’t get lost in your work to the detriment of other areas of your life.
Pisces 20/02-20/03 The month begins with a strong focus on family and attention to domestic matters, dear Pisces. This keen nesting instinct provides you with the chance to rest up for more adventurous experiences to come. Romantic and creative energy increases as June progresses. On the 25th, Jupiter begins a year-long transit that points to an especially opportunistic period for romance and recreational pursuits. June offers a flavor of these exciting themes, with events that seem to demand the need for new beginnings on romantic, creative, and entertainment fronts. If you’ve been hiding yourself away recently, then people or circumstances can serve to motivate you to express yourself. June 2013 ENJOY No 80 | 43

Hashing in Ghana
The Hash House Harriers (abbreviated to HHH, H3) are a group of noncompetitive runners who are found in countries around the world. The Hash is a running and beer drinking event held by the H3 clubs with participant calling themselves Hashers. Some Hashers define and mark a trail before hand; these hashers are called Hares or Hounds. I will attempt to shed a little light on this gathering of fun loving people who have a ‘running’ problem.
“A charity ‘Red Dress Run’ in Elmina street with 300 hashers dressed in red dresses.”
The history of the Hash as an organization or the Hash House Harriers is hard to pin down, continued
research uncovers various items of interest. Harrier running clubs date back to the mid-19th Century in the United Kingdom; traditional running clubs tend to be more serious and competitive in their outlook and focus on fitness and preparation for races.

“45 Km of trails marked divided into 9 different trails to run at various nice locations on the coast and in Bamboo Forest and Elmina town.”
The Hashers originated with the same concept in mind but took on a subtle twist by combining adult running with a common children’s game called Paper Chase with various accounts dating as far back as 1837 with the oldest organized club being the Thames Hare and Hounds, dating back to 1867.
Albert Stephen Ignatius Gispert, aka ‘G’, an English chartered accountant with Evatt & Co. (now Pricewater House), established the Hash House Harriers in Kuala Lumpur in December 1938. He started the club from bachelors of the Selangor Club chambers. He was the one who conceived the alliterative name ‘Hash House Harriers’.

DUES or COSTS?
The usual run fee (to cover the cost of drinks, warrior awards) is 9 cedis, the price increases to 10 cedis on a chop night. These fall on the first Monday of each month and for most weekend runs. There is also a surcharge of 1 cedi for all new runners to cover the cost of a mug - a most essential item for any Hasher.
Join a Hash group, they are a Drinking Club with a Running problem‌.
The Accra chapter of the Hash House Harriers meetevery Monday night at 5:15 pm at various locations throughout Accra. They also hold weekend Hashes at least once a month usually somewhere outside of Accra for a change of scene. Currently there are about 35 dedicated members and on some nights up to 75 runners.
